20 Minutes About A Smart Rowing Machine

"The day we have an interesting guests. Bruce Smith from hydro reuss. Why don't you just introduce yourself little eight? Great to be with you on the show and name is Bruce Smith I'm a Canadian living in America, and and the CEO and founder of a company called Hydro. What's grow? Yeah, hydro is a indoor rowing machine, and it uses some pretty revolutionary resistance mechanism technology to make it quiet, but the coolest thing. Thing about the machine. The part that we love the most about it is that we broadcast not fitness classes, but we actually take the experience of being out on the water rowing, and we have instructors out there. Who talked to you directly live on a beautiful twenty two inch, high definition screen with great speakers, so you actually experienced being out on the water and being part of a rowing crew you know from. From your living room or your bedroom or wherever you machine, so it's like having a penitent Kloss, except it's on a rowing machine that is extremely quiets why it whereas like putting us more broad, you know like almost feeding like you're dancing. Really off focusing on you know creating an immersive experience of being out there rowing exactly so we have trademark this idea of votaw reality and I love Peleton we have A. A time in the office they're they're totally great. It's really fun and it is. You said it's exactly right. It's like being at the club with your friends. You know you're not drinking or smoking, but you're you know you're listening to music or super photogenic people. You know it's fun experience and we love that that's great for us the coolest thing that we could think of doing to take this concept of live. Elo are and create an immersive experience so rather than going to the club every day for your workout, which is great, we can have great music and really really charismatic instructors, but you're actually out on the river, or on the bay, Miami beach or rowing by London, bridge, so, who do you think is it for? Is it like somebody that Audio Patent Than They WanNa? WanNa to mix up the workout as really somebody that is looking for different experience because they don't like going to a club, but they wanna have liberal quietness of actually being outdoors and row. It's for people who are looking for the very best experienced the best workout experience and the best way to connect with their friends, so Peleton has a leaderboard which is great. Great, but you're really competing. You're competing by yourself and you know not that many people have actually wrote out of the water in a boat with other people, but the experience of it is unbelievable. You're right on the water, but most importantly you're moving in complete rhythm with seven other people, Ya, howdy, howdy create that because if I'm Roy like, let's say like on. On, a big rowing team or like even dragon boating like a need to be in sync with everyone right because as soon somebody's out of things not working. That's exactly right. In human beings hardware. They love to do things in synchronicity with other people. It makes you feel better. It's like it's a genuine way of connecting and when you're biking, you know you're. You're like ninety five or one hundred beats per minute, and and really not moving in the same rhythm as as the instructor like you're having a shared experience, but it's not exactly the same rhythm when you're on the rowing machine, you're encouraged. It's actually really easy. You move every part of your body in exactly the same rhythm as the instructor, and so there's some brain. Brain science behind this you know the brain is an aerobic organ like a muscle, you not energy systems like like the rest of your body, and so every time you make a decision in your brain. You're using some energy, and so when you're exercising, you have to keep deciding to exercise and they're really really cool thing about rowing especially when you're rowing crew like. Like, not just on a machine by yourself in a room, but when you're rowing as part of a team, you turn off that decision making process in your brain, because the person that you're following the person in front of you is is making those decisions. You don't have to make them, so you achieve the state of flow much much faster and we know from. From our experience and I know from my experience as a national team coach that has it actually has a profound impact on people. It is the best exercise you can do. It's also US eighty six percent of your body's muscles when you're biking like forty forty five percent of your muscles with you have to use your arms and legs. It's like a full body. And your core and it improves your bone density also, so it really is like. If there was one pill that you could take, that would like. Make you friends and make you healthier. You take that pill. Of course. We feel like we've got that pill. We all would like that, but say so just saw. Listeners can really imagine how the product experience looks like so I'm imagining now you're sitting on a rowing machine and you have like a huge monitor of some sort right, and and you see an instructor like. How do you create that experience off? Somebody actually sitting in front of me. Somebody's sitting behind me and I'm not competing against. Against them, but we actually working together like how you create that certainly question, so this isn't like we didn't just go. Go to the river with some of our friends and get some go prost. We don't talk about our our workouts as we talk about them as episodes and we hired this really really amazing film team, and so we take all the experience that Hollywood and television. Television have created in the United States and we apply that skill in that art to capturing the whole experience of being out on the water, so we have four cameras. We have a team that is mixing and editing that you know. The most important part of this are two things number one is the rhythm, and so you never lose that rhythm and the instructor. Who's WHO's out. Out there with you is encouraging you to be in rhythm with everybody, and it's very very easy to follow like you do it instantly, even people who've never done it before within like two or three strokes there in the right rhythm, and then the other part is that emotional connection and two things contribute a lot to that one is music, so we have an amazing library of. Of Music and the other is making sure that when you're filming, you captured not just the rhythm, and the experience of being outside, and and the you know the environment of being out on the water, but also the eyes of the instructor is are the window to the soul, and it's it sounds trite, but it's. It's unbelievably true like you have to see. People's facing to be able. Able to read what's in there is and it, it's that experience being able to move your whole body in the same rhythm, AC- instructor and also connect with them. Because you feel what they're feeling, you know they're out on the water and they're excited about what they're doing. They're you know they're training for the US national team and they're sharing their passion for sport that they love. Love more than anything else, and it's really it is genuinely inspiring, and we thought just a crazy response from consumers, which is really encouraging, and

And it's on its back on Bravo so it wasn't bravo than it moved to lifetime now came back to Bravo and it has carly kloss in the Heidi Klum role and Christian Syria. No past winner in the Tim. Gunn role and people were concerned about this to use the word that Tim. Gunn like to use a lot But I'm here to tell you that Christian is great. He is fun and funny and he just he just goes around and says and he can convey quite a lot with his little man but he has really good feedback and advice and he yeah. He's good he's gone so yes she soon. I feel like maybe watching project runway so we just started and It's been something fun doing together. Nice so and it's the season's over so you can you know you can start from the beginning and get all the way through it without having to wait for anything so astle we are doing Nicole. What is on the instagram minute? It you actually gone this one for me Catherine type in quite enjoying of late. So thank you very much for doing the research for me this past week. But I'm going to shout out an instagram account called comments by celebs and it's basically screen shots of instagram posts on which a celebrity has commented and You often see Chrissy Teigen but Lots of good ones. That give you make you chuckle. A lot of them are like former CO stars or You know where they're commenting on one another's page or There is even you know sister. You know siblings and It's cool it's it's very random and in it's kind of fun to see that they're just like us in the same vein of A. Didn't we WANNA talk here about rob blow on Instagram? And how his son has his sons roast him on instagram. All the time and this is sort of similar yet in spirit like there's one here just looking at its huge ackman's a instagram account. Any posted a picture of him and his wife and he was commemorating the twenty four. The last twenty four years so is there. Twenty four th wedding anniversary. So is that a picture of him and his lovely wife twenty four years ago and so he's saying you know I love you devs with every fiber my soul happy anniversary Yada Yada Yada and then Ryan Reynolds comments hanging there. Deb So it was just destroyed. You need at this time. That's right exactly. It's a lips. Have a Lotta time on their hands right now. So probably will be comedy have to do that. So what do you have Terry this week? Well for those of us who are still actually working. I have a recommendation of a very simple APP. That was very helpful for me. This past week is were recording. I think I've talked about before about the pomodoro technique by which you work for twenty five minutes get five minutes off work for twenty five minutes five minutes off. I think I've probably suggested other tools for doing this that I have used for awhile and then discarded as is my way but The one that I am using just at the moment that was very helpful. Got Me through a really intense four days worth of work. is just called tomato timer. And it's on the APP store for iphone. At least I don't know about android but it's just it has a little circle and you poke the circle and it starts counting down to zero and then it puts another circle for your five minutes and it's just that visual as the time goes the filling on the inside of the circle goes down so you kind of have a visual reminder. Also casts shows the time as it takes down Not a lot of bells and whistles not a lot of stuff to type in and fill in and follow up and report and all that just counts down for you in a visual manner. You can have it on your iphone next to your computer as you're working on it will keep you focused. Theoretically it did it worked very well for me for that space of time. So

Will be making his first appearance in court shortly. He is facing charges of homicide homicide charges and kidnapping, but we don't know a whole lot about this guy. Still to this moment. There's still a lot to be learned about him a very low profile type of person really not much of a presence online family. Isn't speaking doesn't seem like a lot of friends. He's quite the mystery. He also, according to eat, Barron county sheriff's office did not know, Jamie clauses. Family didn't have any interaction with the parents, but he's accused of killing before abducting thirteen year old daughter and kidnapping, you're holding her captive for almost a full three months. I mean, this is one of those miracle stories, you know, I was I was just talking a little bit about Elizabeth smart and the tragic murder of Polly Klaas here in the bay area twenty five years ago. In kind of where they're similar in different from this case. But you know, her parents were just shot and murder. I mean, the the part that's such a weird mystery of just all of it. There's always the the why did she get kidnapped? Why did whatever somebody get murdered? He went and killed her parents first, and then kidnapped her through her in the trunk of his car, and the sheriff said that people planning to this that she was definitely has his target and that the shotgun give it to the house and to murder, the parents, according to the charges against so this is definitely something. That was premeditated. As far as the detectives are concerned. Even though he didn't appear to have any regular interaction with this family. And and how he came to know that the girl remains to be seen. And what I saw one other little bit of evidence that I find utterly fascinating. Steve Kastenbaum, Westwood One. Correspondent joining me on the phone. We're talking about Jamie, Kloss kidnapping and murder of her parents case where she has reappeared and seems to be okay. And is is safe now away from the alleged murderer and kidnapper. But I heard Steve I don't know if you've heard this too. He shaved all of his hair. So he wouldn't leave that kind of forensic evidence behind the scene of the crime. Did you hear that? Yeah. That's right. That's according to the barren county sheriff said that he took steps to conceal himself from police and those steps included shaving his hair. So he wouldn't leave on any sort of a evidence. So where do we where do we what do we know now then so at this point? So she reappeared there was a woman out walking her dog. And then all of a sudden, there was Jamie lightly clothed for Wisconsin winter day saying, I don't know. Where I am. And I'm Jamie is that right? Basically. And she's extremely fortunate that this woman was walking her dog at the time that she was on that on that screen because it's a very very sparsely populated rural area. And this was a collection of just a few homes in this one location, and it's one development, I have very heavily wooded area. And as she got out of the house while Patterson was away, according to police and started walking looking for help and came across this neighbor who just happened to be walking her dog at the time. And and then they were actually afraid that the alleged kidnapper was looking for her. And that's ultimately how the police caught him. Wasn't it that he was out looking for her? That's right. The thirteen year old was able to give sheriffs and information, including name, the color of a car, which was read and they were able to use the information. She gave them to make an arrest of this suspect. It's such a bizarre case. Steve Kastenbaum, western one. Correspondent joining me on the phone right now. Jamie close again, we know so little about the alleged suspect in this case for him to commit what is a very heinous series of crimes. I mean, the murder of her parents the kidnapping the abduction. We don't know yet. If if it will turn out that what happened to her with similar to Elizabeth smart, for example, where she's been very forthcoming about what was done to her on a daily basis. There's no evidence that this this individual had any contact with police, according to the sheriff's department. That's right. He apparently lived at this house in Gordon Wisconsin at some point with his father or was owned by his father at some point. But it had recently been signed over to a Bank or a little bit around the time that this kidnapping took place and yet he was still living there. The house is kind of it samples if you look on the inside there's some photos that have appeared that show that only been partially finished on the inside feeling the outside that neighbor said it was with all sorts of the breed garbage and broken vehicles. So bizarre. Now as I understand it. So I saw actually just moments ago. I saw go across the ticker that he's apparently going to reveal something about why he did this have you heard anything about that yet? I have not seen that update shortwhile ago. They were still trying to find out the why behind this. And they said they were going to be taking their time and doing that because their priority was to do what was best for Jamie clause. They didn't wanna press her too much and complicate what is already an extremely difficult situation for her and she tries to become reacclimated to life at home in the wake of he kidnapped that her parents being murdered. Yeah. It's just it's such a I mean again horrific story with a with a happy, you know, outcome here that Jamie was found and she's safe and she's in a safe place now with her extended family as her parents are no longer with her. Here on on this planet and they're in their bodies as they were murdered by allegedly by this suspects. Steve Kastenbaum, Westwood One. Correspondent Steve thanks for giving us the latest on what's happening with Jamie clause. Yeah. Really appreciate it is such a devastating story. Who are these? People still I need to go back and read like, psychological profiles. You know? The. May mail. I don't even wanna say man, the male. Who is who kidnapped Elizabeth smart? For example. I'm still trying to understand why you pick up some you kidnap some teenage girl some Earl early teenage girl. And and I don't understand this at all. I don't understand what happened. Whoa. With Polly class. I don't understand what these I mean. I don't know a better word than monster. These men who've committed these acts, and I sincerely hope that everybody. I just re tweeted out I saw from Jake tapper the official go fund me for Jamie Kloss. Started by Jamie's cousin. Sergey tweeted out. So I just retweeted it, and I just hope she gets all the help. She needs. Elizabeth smart is very forthcoming and saying look the best way to get back at these people is to be happy and to live a healthy life. That's what Elizabeth smart is saying..

"And it is about Jamie Kloss a little girl that was discovered alive about seventy miles from where she vantage vanished. We have a suspect. A Patterson John was the first named John Patterson, Jake Paterson twenty one years old suspect killed accused of killing her parents and abducting her and so we're going to be covering that story all day. And if there's another press conference, and what's the latest on that? I'm just getting a little more information. Like, I'm going through scouring everything that I can. So what it looks like is again as what we already know is Jamie, somehow escaped we still don't know exactly how this happened. She goes, according to this neighbor who was walking her dog. Jamie is screaming running down the street or help me. Help me help me then the woman recognizes her goes to a neighbor's house starts screaming on the door. Call nine one one. This is Jamie, close call nine one one. The guy says he opens the door. It was like seeing a ghost. Because it was who they've seen on billboards and commercials for months now, they're seeing that Jamie appeared thin and ragged wearing what looked like leggings and a sweatshirt and oversized men's tennis shoes, they say she was very quiet and she waited for police to arrive roughly fifteen minutes later, she looked the same in the photos. They say just a lot thinner and the woman who I founder said she was absolutely traumatized that could be. Yeah. So as far as the guy goes, though, again, all we know is that he lived in the in the house where he grew up and with his brother, although neighbors are saying they didn't think that he was living there anymore. But maybe I'm guessing now that that is too wet police were referring to when they said that he went out of his way to hide his identity and stuff like that. Maybe he was back in that house. But making sure that nobody knew he was back in that house, which makes me wonder the worst the brother, and what if anything did the brother have to do with this? Or did he know anything about this? Okay. Oh, next story immigration courts, which have already been at a snail's pace have been nearly frozen apparently by the government shutdown..

Some Mortgage Deals Are In Limbo As Government Shutdown Drags On

"It's day. Twenty one of the partial federal government shutdown and it's causing big financial concerns for hundreds of thousands of people who aren't getting paychecks today. Here's one example, some furloughed workers can't refinance their mortgages or by homes because lenders can't verify their income right now and his NPR's. Yuki Noguchi reports even those who aren't federal employees are getting stuck in limbo. Libby, Anderson's divorce finalized this week she'd hoped her ex-husband would finally move out of their damone home where they've been living separate lives under one roof. It was going to be you know, as soon as today. I mean, we were really going to take care of it today the day after it was final, and then he would be out. But no her ex is a furloughed air traffic controller the shutdown means he can't split his assets with her including his government retirement account. She needs those funds to refinance the house under her name. Also, he can't qualify for his own mortgage because he hasn't been paid for three weeks. The. Government stalemate also means they haven't explained the pending change to their young son in a four year olds had you can't say, you know, mom and dad are going to be living in different places. And then you say well when where and we don't have those answers yet as the shutdown drags on more people will find themselves facing similar roadblocks refinance applications are booming as mortgage rates felt nearly half a percentage point in recent weeks, but furloughed workers can't lock those rates in anyone looking to buy or refinance may have a harder time getting through to federal agencies to verify income taxes or get some loan information from the Federal Housing administration, which remains closed rural home loans guaranteed through the department of agriculture are on hold to Margie hockberg is president of the residential mortgage center. She says her Rockville, Maryland business will likely see a ripple effect. This is going to be a house of cards because if I can't close. By your house. Then guess what? You can't buy the house that you are buying even though you don't work for the federal government to deals nearly fell through this week. But Hoff Berg persuaded the lenders to waive certain paperwork. She says banks strict requirements of borrowers create many potential snags. I hope would be that the lender start becoming a little bit more flexible because it's not in their best interest to not do loans either. There's some precedent for these problems during the two thousand thirteen shut down two percent of home loans. Never closed according to the national association of realtors. But that one lasted only sixteen days, the headache really is related to delays Lawrence Yun is the group's chief economist he says seventeen percent of home loans closed late due to backlogs most deals get done. But Yoon says he worries more about possible impact on homebuyer psychology, along with the shutdown it causes greater uncertainty about the economic direc-. Action which means that even the private sector employees may be less willing to purchase home over time. Greg Bush agrees what furloughed employees are going to go out and buy a house right now when there's no definitive date of a compromise. But is vice president of first savings mortgage a big player in the Washington DC area. He notes the impact on contractors who make up the largest segment of the federal workforce. There's a lot of contractors here that aren't getting paid people who own those companies they're not going to buy the able to refinance. And they're going to start laying people off those people, I think will be most affected for Libby Anderson. The new divorce say the shutdown cannot end soon enough while her break up with her ex has been amicable sharing space is taxing it. Just feels like you're at the finish line and the finish line keeps getting moved. But you're exhausted. There's not much you can do about it. You can't move the finish line. Closer because it's totally out of our control. The latest expected to move out was April first. But now Anderson worries the shutdown could outlast that obviously I I wouldn't kick him out into the street, but we really both need to move on and have some physical distance from each other until then they will continue to retreat to separate corners of their house. You know, Gucci NPR news Washington, and we're following a developing story this morning. Authorities say they have located thirteen year old Jamie Kloss, she's been missing since October when police discovered her parents dead in their home in Barron, Wisconsin, investigators got thousands of tips that were massive search parties to try to follow up on those tips last night. Special Holiday Edition: Elf on the Shelf Puts Pressure on Parents

"Katie you cover personal technology and the role of social media really plays a big role here for some parents when it comes to elf on the shelf, lots of parents post, their most creative ideas on social media and at the same time that can probably add to the pressure. We've been talking about for some of those other parents who were stressed out by all of this. Yeah. I think there's a couple of different things going on with the social media aspect of this that are that are sort of interesting. I mean for one thing when you've got people who are doing over the top posts. But they're really hilarious. I think that that can be very entertaining for for a lot of people not just parents on the other hand, you know, you can have some people who just post with their Elvis up to every day. And maybe the elf is in quite as entertaining as Jenny Novak south is. And and I'll see people, you know, tweeting and being like, okay, I'm really over whatever your elf is up to right now. And then on top of that when you've got, you know, people who maybe don't have the time to come up with elaborate stagings for their else. They might see something that a friend. Is doing and know that their children are friends and just think to themselves like oh my God. My kid is going to find out that his house is super lame and doesn't really do much. So they worry about this sort of this sharing of L stories on the playground, which I'm told actually does happen. I mean kids do talk about this at school. You know, what they're elves got into. And you know, I I didn't hear of any issues of, you know, L jealousy among kids or anything like this. But you can imagine his appearance that if you know, if your kid is friends with someone who's Elvis doing all this out of control stuff, you might wanna you might wanna up things that year. So that you don't feel like, you know, you're disappointing them, you know, certainly an element of pressure. They are to be pretty creative. Let's talk about the business side of this a little bit elf on the shelf and the accompanying book first came out over a decade ago in two thousand five how much has the business grown since. Then how widespread is this tradition? Yes. So I mean, the company told me that there have been thirteen million elves quote adopted. Around the world. And that means that, you know, the else were taken into somebody's home, and that's across nine different countries. So it's certainly, you know, an international phenomenon, and then they've got accessories. Like, they you can have a reindeer pet for your else. They also have something called the Kloss couture collection, which is outfits for your elf. And I mean like I'm looking at one right now, and it's like an elf in in an inner tube with snowflakes on it. And he's got a matching scarf on. There's a Saint Bernard puppy pet situation going on elf can be dressed up as like a toy soldier or a superhero. So there really is this whole like L industry around this, which you know, an aunt of a young boy who's been doing this for years. You know, she said she and her sister. We're like, okay, we're not going to get the close because it's kind of you know, it's over the top. And then, you know, over the years, you do this over and over again, and you run out of ideas. And she was like all of a sudden, we're buying the costumes because. We need more stuff to do with Peter the else. So this certainly seems like a pretty successful business story. That's Wall Street Journal reporter Katie been Lee joining us via Skype from San Francisco to talk about elf on the shelf.
