Sleepless in Kyiv: Nighttime Russian air campaign terrorizes citizens in Ukrainian capital

"Russia has unleashed one of its biggest air strikes on Kyiv since the war began as the Ukrainian city suffers its second overnight assault in a row. Officials say its defense forces have shot down more than 40 targets during what Kyiv's mayor of Vladimir Klitschko describes as another difficult night in the capital. Ukraine's air force claims to have shot down 37 out of 40 Russian launched cruise missiles and 29 out of 35 drones, the latest wave of Russian strikes on the city come as Ukraine prepares to launch a counteroffensive to reclaim areas that Russian forces have taken. "Mildly so with the ASX 200 better by a tenth of 1%. We'll take another look at markets for you. In about 15 or so here on daybreak Asia. Let's update global news next Ed Baxter in the Bloomberg newsroom in San Francisco Eddie. All right, thank you very much to the song Kong may soon scrap PCR test requirements for arrivals from China. That's a Hong Kong times report. Lawmakers have called for a switch to rapid antigen tests. South Korea president Yun soki Al's office has clarified statements that the ROK may need to acquire nuclear weapons saying it has not made any plans to do so. It got major pushback from the United States. Pentagon says it is struggling to get China to resume military to military talks, German Chancellor Olaf scholz says Germany believes that globalization is the thing that needs to be done and needs to go. It's a future of the globe and tells Bloomberg's John micklethwait the China is part of that. Schultz says Germany will support Ukraine as long as there is need, and the mayor of key vitali, Klitschko in Dallas, with Bloomberg's David Weston says that the fight to keep infrastructure is intense and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is reverse course on Ukraine, says now he believes Ukraine joining NATO could be an appropriate outcome. In San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg to Sydney Paul. All right, thanks very much. Well, the bank of Japan delivers a much away policy decision today, joining us live from outside the bank of Japan is Kathleen Hayes, Bloomberg news at global economics and policy editor. Kathleen knew have been following and covering many central banks, including the BOJ for a very long time. Can you recall a meeting? There was this interesting. Well, no, certainly not from the bank of Japan. I mean, I always find the interesting and we all do. But I would say it's beyond interesting. It's kind of exciting, isn't it? Because in December, the shock move to white and the yield curve control ban that keeps their benchmark ten year government bond between it was 0.25 on either side of zero. Moved it to 0.5 on either side. Is there a wool markets exposure? Because not only did they make the were they surprised, but does this mean the bank of Japan has embarked on a policy move of exiting extraordinary stimulus, the policy basically of the last ten years. That reverted markets on that day, it could be right again, even if they move because then bond markets are doors open to even higher yields in Japan. That could feed over to the rest of the world. If they don't move, well, then there's the uncertainty of, and particularly with the yen, the Jensen strengthening, they're all kind of long positions people probably a lot of them square it up ahead of this because whatever the BOJ does, it's a big deal. From the BOJ's standpoint, do you think that they see what they did in December as having been successful? That's a good question. I think there's a debate how successful it was. They shot the markets. They did it according to Martin schulz and Ed Rogers who I spoke to earlier today here in Tokyo. That quiet time, December, let's do this and not rock the markets too much. Well, they did want the markets. And furthermore, they've been more blind investors on traders have been pushing against the top of the band. They push the ten year JGB above .5. And then so the BOJ has been had to go into ever higher records of bond purchases. So was that successful? Will this mean that or will they say, well, will they say we've done too much? We don't need to do any more than new governor case over in April way for that. I think it's an open question. Yeah, you mentioned that traders have been tasting the BOJ that's something one of our earlier guests said Rogers said Rogers investment advisers suggested as well as the BOJ at risk care of losing control of the narrative. Well, I have they already. I think that's I think nobody really knows at this point. If the narrative is, we are opening the door and we're keeping things trying to steady the boat until the next governor takes over and takes and then has to take the big more definite steps from removing stimulus and YCC and even getting rid of YCC yoke of control. Then that is a narrative that they'll have to reinforce today, Paul. I think that's maybe one of the challenges communication right now for governor Corona when they put out their policy statement also when he has his big press conference after the meeting for porters are going to pound him with all of these questions. Yes, I think what's interesting is bank of Japan overall is kind of seen as conservative yet. Corona son he does like to surprise the markets in 20 seconds. What's the interesting aspect to that? Oh, are you rooting for a surprise? Another step towards something that could maybe that would get high enough for people not to keep pushing on the BOJ. And at the same time, even though governor kroda on December 20th, the last meeting where they had the shock or made the shock. He said, this was a tweak, it's not a raid hike. We're not moving things yet. But it would be clear that they are on this path. It's something that has been probably even condoned by the new prime minister's government. A lot of behind scenes talks are what people think have been going on. So it would be a very powerful signal and a very interesting one at that. Absolutely. Kathleen, thank you very much for joining us. This

This mister president zelensky is a superstar now listen, if I have to choose between zelensky and Biden, I'm always going to choose zelensky. But that doesn't mean that, you know, I think he's awesome. One of the things that really was off putting for me. I don't care what kind of war you're in, all right? If you go to The White House, shave and put on a jacket. Even a tie. I mean, it's The White House. I don't care if it's Joe Biden's White House or anybody else's. I think you ought to not come in here, you know, army green Ukrainian sweater. This is not a battlefield. We're not at war here, sir. And you're here to ask for money, so at least look the part dressed get dressed up. I mean, I guess he's thinking he's in character. He's playing the parts. He was a comedic actor. I really don't have anything against the guy. I just think, at some point, turn it off, sir. Turn it off and you're a president. Let's do it. Now, some people are going to say rich. You're focusing on what doesn't matter. You know, he's very saving lives. He stood his ground. He's fighting for his people. Yes. And I agree. He is. But that just, it did rub me the wrong way. I would bet you anything. Well, not anything. I'm not really a betting man. But what's his name, Vitaly Klitschko, Vladimir Klitschko, the two Klitschko brothers that are champion boxers, one of them is the mayor of Ukraine. I'm sure if he came to The White House, he'd be wearing a suit. You know what? He's a politician. It's a politicians do when they visit The White House. That's what you and me do when we visit The White House. I don't even like Joe Elmo so Biden and I would put on a suit to go to The White House. So that's just something I wanted to mention. Explosions heard in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv

"Multiple explosions have been heard in Kyiv after air raid sirens sounded in Ukraine's capital and elsewhere across the country. The thunderous echoes of what sounded like repeated blasts have rattled across the capital, mayor Vitaly Klitschko posted on telegram that one of the capital's infrastructure facilities has been hit. He urged people to stay in shelters the air alert continues. Klitschko didn't give further details and there was no further information on whether and what targets may have been hit. Russia has been repeatedly pounding Ukraine's wartime capital and power facilities across the country in recent weeks, causing widespread blackouts.

"That's right, Vitaly Klitschko was the world heavyweight boxing champion on and off from 1999 to 2013. Now he's fighting the Russians. Klitschko has been quick to the scene when Russian air strikes slam into the capitol, like this one in March that hit an apartment building. The kill children. Womans, civilians, for what reason. The Russians reached the outskirts of the capital early in the war and had just retreated when Klitschko spoke to NPR in April. Keith was the largest city in east Europe right now. We guess helpful population already the last city has changed totally. This city have an energy so many people enjoy the spring sunshine and right now it's city almost died. Since the spring, Kyiv is largely returned to normal, while fighting rages on in the east and the south of Ukraine. Through it all, Klitschko has never stopped working from city hall, a massive stone building in the center of Kyiv surrounded by sandbags. He says he's left the city just twice since the war began. At age 51, Klitschko stands 6 foot 7 and still looks to be around his fighting weight of two 50. When he retired nearly a decade ago, he'd won 45 professional bouts 41 by knockout and lost only twice. In politics, he did lose his first bid for mayor, but won the post in 2014 and was easily reelected in 2020. He generally gets good marks from citizens, like dimitro, bell off. He's done a pretty good job, and I'm very thankful for what he's done so far. Belle off gives toy car rides to children at a park that Klitschko upgraded. "One of my questions, maybe the biggest question I have going in is Anthony Joshua even capable of being that kind of fighter anymore. He still very much in the prime of his career, but it takes a certain mental toughness to kind of go to war with a fighter like Alexander usuk. We've seen Joshua do it early in his career. He did it against Dylan white, wound up picking up a knockout. He did it against Alexander Povetkin, Wanda picking up a knockout, most notably he did it against Vladimir Klitschko and scored what was then the biggest win of his professional career. But the Klitschko win. I think took something out of him. The Andy Ruiz lost, took something out of him. And really since that Ruiz fight, the first fight, we have not seen the tenacious Anthony Joshua that we saw early in his career. We saw a guy that box cautiously, maybe understandably in the rematch against Danny Ruiz, a guy that I thought took a lot longer than he should have to get Kubrick pulled out of there because pulev was not on Joshua's level when they fought towards the end of 2020. And a guy that, as you just pointed out, tried to outbox Alexander usuk, and that was the worst coaching decision I've seen since Canelo Álvarez tried to outbox Floyd Mayweather back in 2013. That just doesn't work if you're a fighter like Anthony Joshua, fighting a pound for pound guy, like Alexander usuk. So to me, I think Joshua can win this fight. But he's going to have to do exactly what you just said. He's going to have to get in the trenches and fight this guy and not try to outbox him and for me, I don't know, I just don't know if he's capable of that being that kind of fighter anymore. You know, sometimes Chris, like you said, when you get knocked out in the way that he did against Andrew Ruiz was down multiple times in the fight. You know, sometimes that does forever change your psyche and it changes the way it makes you gun shy and it makes you unwilling to, as you said, get in the trenches and get your hands dirty, so to speak. To try to win a fight that way. But he's going to have to do that. He's going to have to revert back to what Anthony Joshua once was and show some willingness to do that. The way that he did against Vladimir Klitschko. That's a long time ago now. That's 5 5 and a half years ago almost now. So, you know, and he's been through a lot since then. But he's going to have to do that if he's going to win this fight, Chris, because as I mentioned earlier, he just doesn't have the skill set. He doesn't have the ability to beat usic, who's very smart. It was a very accurate puncher who's just better than him in every way as a boxer as a technician. He can't win that fight. So you better go and impose your physicality and impose your size and your strength. No matter how much weight usic has put on, he's not as strong as Anthony Joshua, but as you alluded to, Chris, the thing that is going to make Joshua vulnerable if he goes after usic is, of course, he's going to be susceptible to getting knocked out himself.

"In years past Sarah Katie Andrew and the rest of the CNBC Davos crew have sat on a roof in frigid temperatures bundled with hand warmers to chat with the biggest games of business and politics about the world order and innovation and the fresh Alpine air. But this year, a lot of things have been different. It's a little bit different having this event in May after two years of pandemic than the typical January captains of the universe event that we've seen in the past. It has felt very different, not just because the weather and the dress code is totally different, but because we're seeing each other for the first time. So I think there's a lot of excitement around face to face interactions. There's really no replacement for that. Everyone had enough of zoom and when it comes to meeting the top leaders in business and politics and the economy and civil society, everyone in one place, there's no substitution. So I think everyone's really happy to be here. But at the same time, it's a really uncertain time for the global economy. And there is a lot of pessimism and negativity. We're looking at a war in Ukraine, which is the less than three hour flight from here in Davos. And it's changing all sorts of geopolitical relationships. It's elevated tension significantly. We're potentially looking at a global recession and a spike in inflation that's causing a lot of harm on developing economies in particular. I did a panel today with someone from a development bank in Africa where they're looking at more than 13% food inflation on already stretched finances. So you are seeing these pain points. But at the same time, everyone's really happy to be here talking about it together and it makes you feel like global cooperation or at least dialog is alive and well, which is what Davos always is, but it's nice to do it in good weather and it's nice to do it after a two year hiatus. A lot has changed in those two years and top of mind for everyone is the war in Ukraine. This week, Russian forces continue to press in on Ukraine and on Wednesday alone, they staged dozens of attacks, killing at least 6 people. Watching from honestly not so far away, German Chancellor Olaf scholz spoke to the Davos community, and his comments made global headlines. We can not allow Putin to win his war, and I firmly believe that he will not win it. And mayor of Kyiv vitali Klitschko also came to Davos to deliver his message from the Ukrainian people to the international community. Main priority are starting my speech main priority for every Ukrainian for every citizen saw a hometown safety. Mayor Klitschko's brother of Vladimir also attended the forum. That's who you'll hear from today. He gave Sarah eisen an idea of what life is like back in Kyiv. There were depressing parts of the interview where made you pause, I didn't even know what to say. But there were hopeful parts of the interview as well. And that was when I asked him when it was like in cube right now because he said three months ago, it was very scary and dangerous and everyone was hunkering down and a city of 5 million people was completely empty and a lot of people were fleeing and there were sirens and air raids and bombing and now people are back and they've defended Kyiv. And we've seen world leaders. We've seen members of Congress go there and walk freely with president zelensky. There have even been stories of remote workers gathering at cafes and Kyiv, logging into their jobs. But as kiv residents attempt to find normalcy in the middle of a war zone, the world is watching. Closely. Russia has for many years sent a delegation of leaders many companies. You've seen a lot of the traditional oligarchs, you've seen people from the Russian energy companies come here in the past. But this year the World Economic Forum did not allow any Russian delegation to Kim at all. Is that what sort of message do you think that sends? To the global community. It was noticeable because, as you mentioned, the Russians are always here and full force. They at least wear the best parties. And they always have the best Caviar at those parties. And it was obviously a strong statement to Russia that it is not included in a global dialog in the global community. But at the same time, you have members of the Ukrainian delegation that are here at the foreign ministers here. President zelensky addressed mister Davos on video to a standing ovation here. You're playing this short on time. They're calling on the world community and world leaders to do more. They're calling on Europe to have an oil embargo and there's still some struggles with that with that situation. They're calling on investors globally to put money into Ukraine and pull it out of Russia. So there's more that can be done, but clearly it's a statement. It's a statement of unity against Russia from a lot of the world's most powerful people. You spoke to one of the cleats co brothers, two twins, from Kyiv, Vladimir. He has sort of given up a very different career to throw himself into the cause in Ukraine now. Tell me about your conversation. So he is top ranked heavyweight boxer. Very widely decorated. And international superstar and celebrity turned freedom fighter essentially. He's in less than in the Ukrainian army, his brother is the mayor of Kyiv. As you said, and they are staying in Kyiv with this fight, I asked him what he was doing here in Davos. And not in Ukraine. He said that he's left two times since the war broke out about three months ago. Once was to meet with the German Chancellor and the other was to come here because he thought and his brother came as well. It was so important to spread the message to keep supporting Ukraine and his bigger message, I would say, is that Ukraine's fight is the world's fight. And Ukraine is fighting for freedom, and he also had a lot of warnings about the consequences and what could be coming with Russia, because he says the world hasn't been paying attention to the signals from Russia, going back to Crimea and Putin's language before then. And so he had some interesting and scary warnings for what could come next. He also spoke to me, he said, and has been speaking to media because he wants it to stay in the forefront of western media. And he really made such a point on telling me how important the media was to tell the right story because if you look at what's happening in Russia, the propaganda there and how they're explaining this war from Ukrainian perspective is just ludicrous and is completely wrong. So I think what you'll hear is that he has come with a very powerful message and after Davos, he's going to drive back into your brain to the war zone, which is really sort of unbelievable juxtaposition when you think about it. I asked him, how did it feel to be here? He said, totally surreal. First of all, I'm curious why you come here to Davos in the middle of the war. Now, in Davos, two worlds are colliding, meeting each other. On political side, the leaders of the governments and on the economical side, the lyrics of business world. And it's so important to work together in one front against this Russian aggression and the war in Ukraine. Because without isolation, on the political side, and on economical side of Russia, these wars will keep on going. Because every cent that Russia is gaining on trading oil gas coal, whatever the trade is, is going to be spent on the military equipment and paid for the soldiers that fight and kill us today in Ukraine. Do you feel like your message is being heard? Europe is.

When Will Hayden Panettiere Learn?

"When is Hayden Panettiere going to learn? This girl is going to kill herself, she's a mess in more ways than one. The other night, coroner boyfriend were involved in this big, big old fight at a sunset Marquis in West Hollywood, a very popular spot where a lot of movie stars and the cool crowd goes. And there was a big fist fight inside the club and outside the club when they were getting drinks, things began to get ugly. She would miss this boyfriend Brian hickerson, which is another story in itself. These two were together, then he was very violent, violent toward her. Abusive, physically abusive. They separated. They got a restraining order. They weren't supposed to be near each other, and now they're not only near each other, they're in fist fights together. So people who were there are saying that the whole fight began at the bar because apparently somebody said Hitler spin on them. And the manager got word of it and he told Henderson and panettiere, they've got to leave. She was apologizing and profusely and apparently she kept warning Brian. She kept saying jail Brian jail, knowing that he's on probation and this will obviously put him away. This video's over 5 TMZ's got videos. There's photos of it. But it got worse as it went outside. Now she's 33 years old with a 7 year old daughter with Vladimir Klitschko. Doesn't have custody of this kid. And now she's seeing the guy she had a restraining order against. It doesn't make any sense.

"And not that you need me to tell you that. So here's my question. See, this is what cliff and I were talking about. The Ukrainians, this is their country. Just like when you were in Afghanistan, no one has that, but ever been able to win a war against the Afghan people because you're in their country. They don't want you in there. So the question for you is army major. These Ukrainians are not going to go down easy because they, because they are fighting for their own country. You may win the battles and we won all of them. We won every battle we fought. But it didn't stop them. It didn't matter. It didn't matter. They are still going to fight you. This is their home. This is their ground, and they are going to stand their ground. You may have the ability. What we're seeing right now in Ukraine is absolutely next level. You got 13 people guarding snake island and they're told put down your weapons. And surrender. And they said, go fuck yourself. They all lost their lives. You have a young man who had to destroy a bridge, but when he got to the bridge and started wiring it, he realized the only way he's going to be able to destroy that bridge before the Russians crossed it is to sacrifice his life. And guess what? He sacrificed his life. And we already know that the 13 people that told Russia to go fuck themselves. And that young man that detonated the bomb while he was basically sitting on top of it are already receiving the highest honors that you can receive in Ukraine. Let me tell you a little bit something about that. A lot of people have visions of themselves being better than what they could possibly be. Everybody has that, especially when you're in combat. You know, I can tell you there were times when I was getting ready to cross the border into Iraq. I thought to myself, we are going to slay these people. Everybody has those visions. But I'm going to tell you what we're seeing is it actually come to fruition. These people are standing strong. A husband and a wife, young, a young man and woman, take a knee and both of them get married and as soon as the service is over, they stand up, they change their clothes, they pick up their rifles and they both go together to fight. Did you see the video, even if that grandmother who got in the soldier's face? Here's some sunflowers, so when you die, that something will grow. Something will grow. I played that at the beginning of the show. I look at the president. Look at president zelensky. Look, look at the Klitschko brothers. Both the Klitschko brothers are world champion boxers..

"Who who. Who will he choose. We are waiting with baited yes. It's minted baited breath. My friend take it away. I know everybody wants to know what is club. Radice pick who who is club or diga pick. Who does the combat she think will win the rubber match between tyson fury and deonte wilder. Who's gonna win before. I give my prediction. Let's see what led up to this so we all know about the first fight. It was a draw me personally. I thought wilder should one. That count was kinda slow. I kinda slow. The count was low and When weary with furious. I got floored he got up damn near one that round if wow they knock them down fear would win that fight. It was still close. It was a draw. Some people say if you're a one but because of that devastating knockout. Some people gave to wilder giving edge either way. It was a draw bill to the second fight. Second fight i mean fury swishes holtkamp. Camp up start training macron boxing with with with sugarhill legendary Transco for manual store recipes. You know saying nobody number legends in heart in hard hitters came out of a crop. Boxing up there in detroit but Gower sugarhill changes. Oh game playing math. Wilders ass out now louder has um you know a couple of excuses. He said here i. It was His suit was too heavy. But one actually address negro power engine recruiter table with attitude One should look like extra. Game of thrones. You chose look like that. So don't don't blame the suit. That was you buddy. His cornermen santa he always sabotage him and he did complain about the water and he was seeing double and it is a small conspiracy going right now because post fight. Fury refuses to the water. That that that they get. I speak fury refuse to take of the water that they gave him say that ten times. So you know at. I'm not gonna make excuses feerick. And what a great game plan came and heavier presa action. He is the best now with all those who i'd say He is the best boxer wade been. You might be a little bit of pure boxer but fury his ass goes bad and he really like the black olive oil like he's wilder. Didn't look prepared the second fight now here. We go third fight. Fury tried to skip him. Go straight to the anthony joshua so we can get undisputed. You know it was in the clause that water got a rematch. There was gonna be a rubber match if you wanna wait. Try to breach contract. Go fight josh. What they already had date they wanna fight. Wembley but there's issue with that because that's a fury does not have a license to fight in the uk. His has been suspended since he beats klitschko. Okay he tests positive for. Pd's for pets you know. He hasn't he doesn't have a license in in the uk. Now he can always get reinstated. He can call the queen he can call each elbow. He can call painting a bear. Maybe even danger mouse's somebody may wanna spice. Breaking down Wilder-Fury II, and what's next for the heavyweight division

"I know you watch the fight last night and you and I. We talked a little bit about it before. Obviously it all went down and both of us. I don't want a two tone horn or anything but both of us like Tyson fury to get the job done and quite frankly I felt like the guy was just to skilled in too much of a better boxer than wilder and it really did play out that way when you knock a guy down twice you finish the job and having around obviously a. Tko Is the decision. What did you see from fury? And what did you see from from wilder? I think fury off the back came up and you hear me. Yeah Yeah Yeah I think. became every round He ordered louder out from the beginning. he his late older powered while. I think I mean he did a phenomenal job. I agree my jump in now I was gonNA agree with Everybody here I mean I certainly started going in. That theory was the better boxer. He better skilled in. Probably he had box against you know some better competition. I mean heck I mean. He took the title from from Klitschko Klitschko at ruled the heavyweight division for ten years so He he had some signature wins and it was apparent from the jump. That outlook theory was moving. Forward in going and attacking wilder and wilder was the ones backing up in and then quite simply wants wants to punch the Guy Wilder near bleeding and the eardrum probably more than likely busted and the equilibrium went for for a while. There I mean it was. It was a matter of time. I I've just surprised that they let the fight. Go the seventh-round quite honest with everybody. Jam with champion at the end of that year beating. Early I I thought it was bad Yeah but it was a good stoppage By the corner actually because according to one and then it was interesting because you heard while they're say he was a little disappointed that his corner threw the towel and so A little bit of difference of opinion probably but again. The their job is to protect their fighter. Man He's he's got a lived it to get back in there and do this once again and obviously as a fighter you want to be out there and you want to battle it out and you think you can still win this thing. But truth be told Tyson fury he was the better man. The bigger man the veteran man and quite frankly the better boxer just more skilled. If you ask me
