Curry scores playoff career-high 50 as Warriors down Kings

"In the decisive game 7, the warriors made it look easy as they blow out the king's one 20 to 100 to advance to the second round in the Western Conference playoffs. Stephen Curry scored a playoff career high 50 points making 7 threes with 8 rebounds and 6 assists. For a reason because we started to see where the holes were and I could be ultra aggressive and get looks and it worked. Andrew Wiggins added 17 points and Klay Thompson with 16. Monk, Fox lead Kings past Warriors 118-99 to force Game 7

"In a must win situation, the kings beat the warriors one 1899. The victory evens up the series at three games a piece forcing a decisive game 7 at Sacramento on Sunday afternoon. Deer and fox playing with a broken finger tip on his left shooting hand had 26 points and 11 assists. We knew our backs against the wall, especially coming in here, which is one of the toughest places to play in the league. We knew that we had to do the little things. Malik monk led to king's bench with 28 points. "AP sports I'm Josh rowntree. We start on the NBA where Memphis took a game over Dallas with multiple stars sidelined. Correspondent Robert Stevens has more. Desmond baines scored 23 points as the Memphis Grizzlies completed a two game sweep of the Dallas Mavericks, one O four 88. Naz played without Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving both injured while the grizzlies were again without John morant. Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins says his team up this defensive intensity in the second half. Come out of halftime with just a renewed energy and mentality. Hey, we got to raise our level both sides of the floor. We made a couple adjustments defensively that paid off for us, which got us going with our groove on offense. And obviously that third quarter kind of changed the game. David roddy and Dylan Brooks had 19 apiece from Memphis while Jaden hardy led the Mavs with 28. Josh green at 23. Bob Stevens Dallas. In Houston, the rockets knocked off the Celtics one 11 one O 9. And jabari Smith scored 24 to lead the young rockets, one of the best teams in the league, where it was in the finals last year, you know, just competing with him. You know, going down to the wire like that with a great team like that. It's just real promise in this room. It's really good for us. The bucks beat the kings one 33, one 24. Giannis Antetokounmpo poured in 46 in the win. The warriors took down the sun's one 23 one 12 behind 38 points from Klay Thompson, including 33 in the first half. On the ice, buffalo scored three third period goals rallying to beat Toronto four three. Alex tuck at the 30 goal mark with a pair in the final frame. We kind of got back to just trying to work and make simple plays and you know I just roll over one line after another after another and it makes a huge difference out there and big news in the opening day of NFL free agency. The Raiders reportedly filled their QB void by agreeing to terms with former 49er. Jimmy Garoppolo on a three year deal worth, 67 and a half $1 million. The bears are set to give linebacker tremaine Edmonds a four year $72 million contract and the Steelers are bringing on three time all pro corner Patrick Peterson for a two year deal. Poole beats buzzer with layup, lifts Warriors past Grizzlies

"Jordan Poole's layup with one second on the clock lifted the warriors to a one 22 one 20 win over the grizzlies. The victory ends Golden State's four game home losing streak. Stephen Curry had a game high 34 points, but was ejected late in the fourth quarter for throwing his mouth guard into the stands. JP with the game winner at the end execution was great. We needed that one. So there's a lot of there's a sense of urgency for sure. And kind of let my emotions get in the way of it. Klay Thompson added 24 points and pull had 21. "Came out of that and even me on the record. That was it. I knew then. Just being out there and being able to go up and down and play with the first unit was a big moment for me and I really enjoyed it. So they basically, after that night picked January 9th, that's the home game to debut. And that's what you saw. All right, well, that brings us to the warriors game against the Cavs on Sunday Night. You were there in the arena. What was the energy like in Chase center before the game? The building is buzzing and the splash brothers are reunited as clay Thompson took the court moments ago. It was unique in a lot of ways where Steph Curry runs the aren. They couldn't care less like Steph Curry could have just been another citizen. It was Klay Thompson came out. It's huge roar from the crowd and Klay Thompson was shooting jumpers and warm ups. Like I said, just 20 foot normal jumpers and everyone he was hitting the crowd was responding like he had just hit a big shot in the second quarter. Huge ovation as soon as you walked out on the floor as expected, the crowd was with him every shot he made. They were hollering. It's something that has been brewing for so long in the bay, and then obviously I'd say maybe the most emotional part of it was the starting line of intro, Steph always traditionally goes last and that he left that spot for Klay Thompson. A season out of Washington state university. 11. PA guy really built it up and it was to me again in this new arena, which in San Francisco is trying to kind of gain anything close to the reputation that the Oakland arena had Oracle. It was its first really big explosive moment I thought. Well, let's walk through a few key moments of this game. Klay Thompson scored the warriors very first bucket of the game and Anthony wrote about the story behind that score. So can you explain? Yeah, Steve Kerr designed it for Klay Thompson to catch it on the wing but pass it on. He wanted to be a decoy. He felt clay was probably going to be a little amped up and just wanted to let him ease into the game a little bit not just pinned out shoot it right away. But it's Klay Thompson. He shoots and what he does. So I said, no, let's redesign the play. Flip the side of the floor because I want the ball on that side of the floor and I'm taking the shot. And clay down the lane. We'll put it up. See the hang time too? Told you first shot right pinned down just turn the corner. It's touch and go. I mean, he has no thoughts of passing the ball. It was kind of a wild shot attempt, but he made it. I guess adds to the story of the night. The two and a half years, the world has changed. But Klay Thompson hasn't. He was a bucket getter. Come on now. The crowd went crazy again. It seemed like it was almost a game winner the way they responded. After that first bucket, it seemed like it took play a little while, maybe to find his rhythm to find his stroke. Is that fair to say? Yeah, I think he missed his next 5 shots. A lot of them short, rushed. I mentioned that Denver scrimmage. He said in that scrimmage he missed his first four or 5, because he was a little short on breath, and maybe a little anxious, a little jittery, and maybe there was some of that, but he got going later. Yeah, well, speaking of that, the play that everyone is going to remember from this game a year from now, I think happened late in the second quarter, a thunderous statement dunk. Anthony, can you just walk us through exactly what happened on that play and your thoughts on it? Cavaliers switches center out on him. He's clearly a little amped up by it. Crossover gets a clear lane and goes for the dunk. I think he's healthy. He's taking advantage of those big on him. The main crossover. Left knee. What Achilles. The surprise of the play is that Klay Thompson's not a dunker, you know? We can go back to age 26, never been injured before Klay Thompson. He's not throwing down some people, so this would have shocked somebody 5 years ago, but he said he had not scribbled it for now, almost two months. He had not dunked in a scrimmage yet, he said. Don't call the whole city of Cleveland just now. Mean mugging two. Oh, he's all the way back. Look at Steph. Stepped on the no one to do it himself. Again, he got hurt on the gun. That's what sent him down this spiral is that Danny Green situation in the finals where he got hit up top landed awkwardly. And this time he dunks lands with his hands on the ground a little off balance, but then he springs back down court. He's yelling at the crowd and it was obviously an ignition type moment in the arena, but to me, it was like a sign. His mind is there. And you talk to so many of these athletes as I'm sure you have as well who go through these really serious long rehabs in the last thing for them to get over the mental hurdle of like, do I believe in my body? Do I believe I can go up and dunk and land and I'm not thinking about getting injured? And that to me, he said it, that he doesn't fear getting injured again. But to me, that was a sign. He really believes it. Because you do not attempt that dunk if you're scared of what might happen on the landing. What are Klay Thompson have to say after the game? The funny thing is that he was like, well, you know, 7 or 18, he didn't love the efficiency. He's like, that's not good, but then he was like, you know what? I'm on the stat sheet. I'm just so happy right now. I did not shoot as well as I wanted to, but I'm just so happy I can even look at the stash sheet and see my name there and see the shot. My shot attempts makes all the stats again and minus two. That's no good, but at least I'm here 'cause the work took to get here is it was incredible, so I'm just very, very happy right now. He was on a high of just having played an NBA game for the first time in two and a half years, but I also think at his core, he's starting to feel like, hey, I can really help this team. Now that can actually feel the ball and feel myself, you know, making shots and cutting and defending. I can see in the future where I will be successful and how I can help this team win a championship. I know what it takes. So the guys on this roster, and I'm, I mean, I'm just excited to go home and watch the watch the film and critique myself and see how I can do better. It's been a long time coming. And lastly, Anthony, you know, the warriors, as you mentioned, have been right at the top of the NBA standings for most of the season without clay in the lineup. So does his return make them the title favorites at this point? Yeah, you know, I think as of this moment, Vegas still has the nets as maybe slight favorites and they have their own odd situation with Kyrie only playing road games and all the stuff they have to solve, but right behind them has been the warriors who at the start of the season were probably considered maybe fourth 5th 6th in the pecking order, but they've surprised so many with how good they've been without clay. The way he looked last night the way he really has looked the last month when he talked to people behind the scenes. They've vaulted in the west favorite category and depending on how you think that Brooklyn experiment is going to materialize. I think a lot of people at this point will probably consider them favorites. They've struggled a little bit offensively at times this year. They have the best defense in the league. He just adds an element to their offense that really not many teams in the league have. Well, Anthony, thanks as always for joining us and congrats on getting married again in a house, man. I know it's been a wild couple years. You can read all of Anthony slater's warriors coverage and check out his podcast warriors plus minus at the athletic dot com. "Right? I didn't mean to drop that one on you. Well, you've been a grown-up and whatnot. Klay Thompson has been just off their rehab in the whole time. And there was so much build up around his return on Sunday Night. But before we actually get to that Anthony, I wanted to rewind for a minute. So we can just kind of appreciate what this dude has gone through. So first, can you just remind us what exactly his injuries were and how he got him? Yeah, so he's 29 years old at the time of the first interview. It's the NBA Finals. This isn't just some random regular season game. This is game 6 of really a motional series where it feels like the end of the warriors era. Kevin Durant in the game before Torres Achilles tendon, and the warriors look like they were done. Klay Thompson, he has 30 points he's the best player on the floor. He looks like he's going to take the orders to gain 7 of that epic finals and in the third quarter he goes up for a transition dunk, gets knocked off balance by Danny Green. And Thompson grants his left knee now writhing in pain. It was a step clean defensive play, but it was pretty hard foul. Everybody for the warriors and the franchise in there in the stands holding their breath. Clay Thompson obviously in some pain. He grabbed that left knee right away. Now comes back out and shoots the fritos, tells Steve care, give me two minutes, I'll be back in the game. And I'm gonna say this are gonna be more wary of putting him back in. After this Durant situation. Wow. I haven't seen him since. That was the ACL. The pandemic happens while he's rehabbing he misses the entire next season. He was about I think 13, 14 months, post ACL, playing basketball feeling really good, readying for the season. It was draft night in November. He's playing pick up basketball in LA goes up for a baseline jumper. He says it's the type of jump shot. He's taken and made thousands of times in his life and he just feels that kick kind of at the back of your foot back of your calf area that so many athletes describe. Worst possible news for the warriors, Klay Thompson has suffered a full tear of his right Achilles. He missed last season with an ACL tear in his left knee. This is his right Achilles, the injury that for a long time was considered like career ending for a lot of guys. Medicine has gotten better, but you're going to miss a whole MBA season if that happens. So he's going to miss two full seasons of NBA competition. And this is one of the most popular players in the league really wanted preeminent athletes in Bay Area, history. This is a huge blow. You know, to have two so serious injuries so close to each other, it does kind of raise some questions. Was there any indication that they were somehow related to each other? Not necessarily one triggered the other, but Klay Thompson has even admitted the ACL was his first major surgery and not that he didn't take the rehab as serious, but he got away from the game. He was kind of vacation in a lot. He was just not necessarily living in dime by the tedious nature of what you must do for serious injuries and he actually said it after the game last night. He thought he may be rushed into playing pickup basketball a little bit quicker than he should have, and maybe his body wasn't fully ready for it. And one thing you talked to anybody around the team from the training staff coaches, teammates, even himself, he has taken this one much more diligently and been around more often and been more patient. He could have played in an NBA game, probably in early December, but they just were just like, okay, now you're physically ready to be unrestricted. Let's now take a very cautious approach over the next month, building up endurance to make sure devastating injury three might not happen. Well, it has certainly been a very long time and Anthony you've been covering the warriors throughout the two and a half years. You've spoken with clay, a number of times over the past many months. What is this recovery process been like for him? I guess emotionally, psychologically. In some ways good you know, he's a guy who was like basketball obsessed. He hadn't really generated hobbies outside of basketball much early in his career and then suddenly with the game being ripped away from him for about 940 days. You know, he started reading a lot more. He got a boat. But I'm teaching him the ropes. What it's like to be a straight captain, baby. He drives his boat across the bay to practices and his captain hat does like Instagram lives. Do you have a nice conditions out there with no wind? Small swell. I get to the city like 15 minutes. At like 35 knots. It's insane. I see it a lot in his press conferences or even in conversations that you have with him, just kind of off to the side. He's much more like enlightened. That's really the word that a lot of people would use and you got to remember at the same time as this just strenuous two and a half years of rehab is going on. What else is going on in the world? The pandemic hits. Obviously, all the protests of last summer, which he was involved in, or I guess two summers ago at this point. It was such a, like I said in an enlightening time in his life where he just really expanded his brain beyond the game. I think he brings it to the press conference and I'm curious how that impacts his career moving forward. Well, while Klay Thompson has been off driving his boat and I guess becoming enlightened, the warriors have been making a lot of moves over the past two and a half years in really reshaping the roster. So can you give us the big picture look at what they've done? A lot. They have the really bad season, which got them the second overall pick. They draft James wiseman. They execute a sign and trade to get D'angelo Russell, then use the DA's low Russell salary essentially to trade for Andrew Wiggins and Minnesota's first round pick, which ends up becoming Jonathan. Wiggins has been huge for them. They drafted literally days after clay's first injury, they drafted Jordan Poole 28th overall, which did not seem like a big thing at the time, but Jordan Poole has exploded in his third season started in Thompson's place for much of the start of the season. He's averaging 19 a game. He's been huge for them. And then a refresh Steph Curry has extended his prime longer than maybe other people think draymond green is back this season looking great. They made a lot of really good moves on the margin minimum signings, auto porters of the world, and they've built what to this point has been the best team in the NBA without glade Thompson. When a guy has been out for as long as Klay Thompson has been, especially having had two very serious injuries, I imagine it's got to be really hard to know when it finally is time to take the plunge and come back. When exactly did claim know that he was ready to make his return. The big milestone was actually unplanned. It happened in right before new year's in Denver. They were going to Denver to play the nuggets, but that day, the nuggets had three players test positive and go into COVID protocols. They had four other players that were injured, and they basically petitioned the league essentially to postpone the game, but the warriors had already flown to Denver. The words were sitting there in Denver with an arena that was theirs that night, but nobody was going to be there. The opponent wasn't going to be there. So they just said, let's do a full scrimmage. Normally, clay couldn't scrimmage with Steph and Andrew Wiggins and those guys because on an MBA marathon veterans do not scrimmage on their off days. But they were planning to play that night. Body was ready. Mine was ready. So they let clay do a full scrimmage with all the starters and he had not done that yet. In play with Steph Curry and two and a half years he'd never played with Andrew Wiggins and then he got through it that night and he.

"Before Sunday Night, the last time Klay Thompson played an NBA game with June 13th, 2019. Donald Trump was still president and had a year and a half left in his presidency. Game of Thrones had just wrapped up its final episode. We serve at your pleasure. The broken ruler of the 6 kingdoms and protector of the realm. And the top song in America and sorry for getting this stuck in your head was old town road. There were no masks, no COVID, and the Golden State Warriors were playing their final game in Oakland's Oracle arena. There's a new NBA champion and it's a team from Toronto, Canada. The raptors the 2019 NBA champs. So yeah, it's been a while. Today, the athletics Anthony slater takes us inside Klay Thompson's journey back to the court over those long two and a half years and his triumphant return Sunday Night. Gosh, it was fun and it was worth every single day of being away and in that squad rack or on that shuttle shuttle board and all the conditioning days it was worth every single moment and I'm so grateful to just compete again. Then, reactions to Georgia winning the national championship.

"All right, let's get to the basketball portion it is. So what did you I know there's not much you can I don't know I'll push back on it. There's a little something you can see from the game and things like that. What could be, but what did you see from a basketball standpoint? Maybe good or bad that maybe something we could just be concerned about or something that we should be happy about? What do you see from this warriors team with clay back in the fold? Well, it's going to be a redefinition of some rules. Jordan Poole came off the bench last night, right? Yeah. So he comes to mind first and foremost in terms of a guy that was asked to a lot of scoring, had a lot of ball in his hands. And now you're coming back with clay. Now you're coming off the bench. Coming off the bench helps a little bit because 6 men came off the bench doll. 6 men come in and they get the ball in their hands, right? It's your job coming in infused some energy into the offense, you know, keep scoring against the second unit. But I think as a team, there's going to be a little bit of that. Andrew Wiggins as well, right? Like guys who've never really played with him at any length before, maybe even those other pieces like Juan toscano and people like that. Clay looked a little heavy in my opinion, but I think that I mean to be expected. It's not a knock. It's just when you're coming back, it's going to take a while to get into real game shape. And then it's to some degree the jury's out on whether on whether he is legs are going to allow him to really move the way Klay Thompson used to move. You know? And what percentage of himself is he, right? Like we talked about KD coming back and KD came back at a very high percentage of himself. It's almost negligible. Like you wouldn't even be able to tell, right? That's still TBD with clay, you know? How do his legs respond once he gets 20 games in? Like, can he still move? Can he defend the way? Because one of the best parts of clay, you know, aside from just this incredible stroke was he was one of the best two way players in the league. Yeah. Does he still have his lateral burst? Can he stay in front of people? You know, there's a lot that they gotta figure out, but I think they will, and they got a great coach. They got a great culture. And I think it gets done. I think that I saw clay walking up to the podium and I was like, I don't want to put too much into this, but it was definitely one of those heavy legs limp. You know when you just hella would your legs are just hella heavy after playing a game. And it was one of those. You could tell that he had played a basketball game. My thing is, it's similar to when you were talking when we were talking about a Steph a couple weeks back in terms of rhythm and him chasing. When stuff was chasing the rhythm and how it sacrificed rhythm. I think the same could be one of the concerns I would have with, at least in the short term, not in a long time, but in the short term trying to find your rhythm to get clay back into the fold. I think that's something that should be should be looked at. I think that that'll ultimately work itself out. But, you know, there's clay's not gonna shoot it. I don't think clay's gonna shoot a team shot. There's gonna be nice where he's just not, you might think he's not himself because he's trying to get his win back. I don't know how long that's gonna be, but I think that there's something a cause that might be pause. They lose some games that you think like, oh, why the fuck they lose this game. But there's gonna be some games like that to where, you know, or clay's just not. He doesn't have that jolt of energy. Yeah, and I think, you know, one of your points there was one that I was kind of, I was thinking about it's the volume of shots that he's going to get. And like 18 and 20 minutes, that can't be his role on this team. That was a first night out of the box, the celebratory moment of Klay Thompson and his return to the Golden State Warriors and it was dope, you know? But I think clay, like there are two ways to approach it. And I mean, this is purely opinion. You could say if you're Steve current company, hey, we're going to force this back. We're going to just keep force and stuff at clay. It might cost us in the short term, but in the long run, we're going to be better for having the splash brothers back and be firing on all cylinders. And then the other way would be to have clay play this complimentary or more complimentary than before type of role where, you know, he gets it when he gets it, and if he gets hot, you know, it is what it is, but he's not real focal point of your offense until until you know he really gets cooking.

"I mean, listen, I like <Speech_Music_Male> Anthony simons. He's <Speech_Telephony_Male> a great player. I <Speech_Male> don't think that the hawks <Speech_Male> with <Speech_Male> Trey young scoring 56 <Speech_Male> points should ever <Speech_Male> be in a position to lose <Speech_Male> to a blazers team <Speech_Male> that doesn't <Speech_Telephony_Male> have Lillard or McCollum, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> or at least <Speech_Male> losing a defensive <Speech_Male> struggle, <Speech_Male> not giving up all those <Speech_Male> points. <Speech_Male> They've just <Speech_Male> been, I think a <Speech_Male> disaster defensively. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> I don't know what the options are. <Speech_Male> I mean, they want to maybe trade <Speech_Male> cameras, so <Speech_Male> maybe trade Deandre hunter. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I mean, hunters <Speech_Male> obviously been hurt. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Which I think is such <Speech_Music_Male> a big part of this. <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> understand, honestly, why <Speech_Male> they'd be in the mix for <Speech_Male> someone like Simmons, <Speech_Male> because <Speech_Male> they just need help <Speech_Male> on the <Speech_Male> perimeter <Speech_Male> so desperately, <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> yeah this <Speech_Male> is like a massive <Speech_Male> massive <Speech_Male> step <Speech_Male> back for them, which <Speech_Male> I mean, would <Speech_Male> be one thing if, <Speech_Male> okay, they finished <Speech_Male> maybe somewhere <Speech_Male> in the four to 8 <Speech_Male> range and <Speech_Male> they were a little bit worse than <Speech_Male> last year, but could make <Speech_Male> some noise in the playoffs. <Speech_Male> But <Speech_Male> this is to me a <Speech_Male> very concerning step <Speech_Male> back. And <Speech_Male> as you mentioned, <Speech_Male> the fact that Collins <Speech_Male> is upset, et cetera <Speech_Male> I mean, <Speech_Male> this could have some <Speech_Male> serious consequences. <Speech_Male> I think to me is like <Speech_Male> one of the under <Speech_Male> discussed stories in <Speech_Male> the NBA, but they've <Speech_Male> been <Speech_Male> probably the biggest <Speech_Male> disappointment <SpeakerChange> this season <Speech_Male> outside of New York <Speech_Male> too. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> They've been <Speech_Male> disappointing. I think <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> COVID <Speech_Male> does not hit every <Speech_Male> team equally, <Speech_Male> even though everyone <Speech_Male> is technically <Speech_Male> impacted by <Speech_Male> the pandemic. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> they've been hit really hard. <Speech_Male> They had a lot of games <Speech_Male> that they had to play <Speech_Male> that were not postponed, <Speech_Male> where <Speech_Male> other teams benefited <Speech_Male> from having games <Speech_Male> postponed and <Speech_Male> think that organization <Speech_Male> was pretty upset <Speech_Male> by some of the games <Speech_Male> that they had to play <Speech_Male> and they were pulverized <Speech_Male> in those games <Speech_Male> because they were <Speech_Male> playing like 6 <Speech_Male> or 7, not 6 <Speech_Male> or 7, but a bunch of <Speech_Male> guys who <Speech_Male> were hardship signings <Speech_Male> or players <Speech_Male> who were not in <Speech_Male> the team at the start of the season. So <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I am <Speech_Male> still, I'm not <Speech_Male> bullish on the <Speech_Male> hawks. Travis <Speech_Male> came <Speech_Male> out last week on the radio <Speech_Male> and said, <Speech_Male> maybe he <Speech_Male> miscalculated <Speech_Male> last season and they're <Speech_Male> success and keeping everyone <Speech_Male> together, <Speech_Male> which was <Speech_Music_Male> very strong <Speech_Male> strong <Speech_Male> words that you don't usually hear <Speech_Male> at GM say <Speech_Male> this early in a season, <Speech_Male> especially <Speech_Male> after giving extensions <Speech_Male> to <Speech_Male> Trey <Speech_Male> was going to get an extension, <Speech_Male> betray <Speech_Male> John Collins, got <Speech_Male> a $125 million. <Speech_Male> Kevin herder <Speech_Male> got an extension. <Speech_Male> Nate <Speech_Male> McMillan got an extension. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Male> it's going to be pretty <Speech_Male> interesting to see <Speech_Male> how they treat <Speech_Male> the trade <Speech_Male> deadline <Speech_Male> in addressing their defense. <Speech_Male> You know, <Speech_Male> even just a guy like Solomon <Speech_Male> hill, who's not, <Speech_Male> you know, <Speech_Male> who's a veteran, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> three and D, who <Speech_Male> doesn't really shoot threes <Speech_Music_Male>

"How I feel about a team. And I was a little bit like, I don't really get the hawks hype this year. Some people were like, I think they're going to finish as high as third in the conference. Maybe second, et cetera, and I was like, am I just not seeing something? Everyone seems to be agreeing on this. And lo and behold, they've struggled. I mean, I never thought they'd struggle this much, but the last four playing spots in the east are not going to be easy. I mean, Charlotte? Nope. Washington and Chicago I mean, I guess Washington was in the plane last year. But there is an absolute fight to be in the playoffs in the east this year. It's not going to be easy. The next right now on the outside looking in the hawks on the outside looking in. Indiana is kind of a swing team because if they don't sell off pieces, I think they have the ability to go on a little bit of a run. Boston's fighting for a play in spot. It's going to be really hard for those teams to make the playoffs. And Atlanta is in that group. I mean, they're going from Conference Finals to it's going to be a fight for them to get into the plane. And that's pretty crazy. It's kind of a, to me, I understand that it's a little early to be looking at standings, et cetera, but no one's I haven't seen it. Yeah, I just don't think anyone's really discussing the fact that we're now really at the halfway point of the season, most teams have played around 40, 41 games. And I believe if the player started today, they'd be out, Mike, not even in the plant. I think they're out of the plane currently. Yeah, there's 17 and 22, 12 in the east. In the west, that's the Sacramento Kings 12th in the west. So that's kind of like the parallel there. And yeah, the hawks have been. They'd be tenth in the west because the west is really.

"Devin Booker, Deandre ayton, Carl Anthony towns, who I thought about having a Jan Jackson junior spot, but just a little bit older. Michael Porter junior, I'm throwing in here as an honorable because if he gets healthy, he's very good. Okay, Eastern Conference, two back court, Trey young, cade Cunningham. Okay. It's like that. I like that. Three front court, my guy, Jason Tatum, just got to put him in here. Of course. Planning to be honest. Yeah. He will not be. Giannis, who is going to be 33, I think. And by then, we'll just be shooting 45% from behind the three point line. And Evan mobley is my third grade. He's had some really nice moments in that warriors game yesterday. There are a couple of possessions where he was being guarded by beelitz on the first half and was I've never seen a player more aggressively call for the ball this season than when Motley had be elites on him. And I think the two people he was cooking had to take him out of the game immediately. Like two straight possessions ended up doing yeah, so shout out to Evan mobley. I don't have a ton of honorable mentions honestly. Scotty Barnes who looks he's just incredible. When Ricky of the year, bam, we just talked about bam. And LaMelo Ball, those are my three honorable mentions for guys who could. A lot of conceivably start. Bam disrespect, I see how it is. This is the opposite of disrespect, but honor, we put the one who wanted to trade him to Phoenix. A transcendent player. Okay. Do you want to talk about the hawks? "If that happens again to this team in the playoffs, Marcus smart plus salary for Mike Conley is going to happen. I can feel it in my bones. I can. So I'm just going to throw that out there into the universe. No, that people know. Get it on record. Please tell me, tell me why that is an egregious idea in your mind. It depends who the plus salaries because it can't just be filler guys. It has to be someone who Utah actually wants in their rotation. Okay, well, fundamentally, what is wrong with do you just not think that Marcus smart is a good defensive player? What is the criticism? No, I think he's a good defensive player, but I think the gap between him and Mike Conley is too big to do what's essentially a one for one plus filler. Well, the argument would be that. Yeah, but he's still no slouch defensively. They play well when he's on the floor. Yeah, well, I mean, yeah, sure. All of his minutes are tied to Rudy Gobert. That's the reason why his defensive numbers are so strong. But if you just watched in the play, I think I'm not blaming my Conley..

"Could have sold high on Antoine walker back in the day, I mean. Listen, we were texting about this because every single game now you get some kind of trade Tatum or jaylen Brown take. Every single game this is the most one of the most manufactured out of thin air storylines I've ever seen in my life. This is right up there with Kyler Murray's undefeated in Dallas because he won three high school games there. This is right up there with Ryan Tannehill, used to play. She was three and O against the Patriots. I mean, he's totally media contrived. They woke up on Sunday. It wasn't even close until they got a couple of garbage time touchdowns. Thoroughly outplayed Mac Jones. The dolphins are the most disciplined team. You asked me not to play a character and that you're going to bring that up. So whatever happens from here on is your mask on. Yeah. Has Tatum ever been as confident since bam had a viable block in the rim. I'd love to see his splits from before and after that moment. Okay, but in answers, as I was saying, before you rudely interrupted me and had to go full Boston guy, even as I was trying to throw you about trying to extend an olive branch, this is just absurdly silly manufactured storyline that makes no sense. Why would they trade either of jaylen Brown or Jason Tatum? There's no need to trade either of them, they're both exactly the kinds of players every single championship team wants. It's foolish to think of trading for any of them. We discussed this. I mean, you wrote your call last week about a potential jaylen Brown trade. And the whole point is it's like, what are you going to get back for jaylen Brown that's all of a sudden going to fix your team? I do think the front office, whether it's Danny ainge, who didn't have one of his old Celtics buddies to make a ridiculous trade form on his behalf this time, like Mikhail lynch 2008. Oh my God. Or the bug law and Brad, the cult leader, Brad Stevens. In all seriousness, though, I understand they've had some unfortunate situations that were a little bit out of their control where there was Kyrie. Gordon Hayward, to an extent, but the front office, I think deserves some scrutiny because I told you this before the season. We rewrite Jason Tatum ahead of Jimmy Butler, for example, on our top 100 list. It's so high. We both did. That's how high we are, Jason sandal. Yes. I don't think we think there's a huge gap between jaylen Brown and bam adebayo. But my point being, I think the Celtics have title contender cornerstones and Tatum and brown. And the fact that they haven't figured out the rest of the roster, I'm not saying it's easy, but when you have guys that talented to me, there's no reason that they should be in the position there. And I understand they've had injuries. They've had COVID. The bucks did the heat did the nets did. The bull certainly have every good team in the east..

"I've never been, I have not been a believer in this team as you know as our listeners know basically since Luca arrived. Nothing against Luca, just against the supporting cast, all the moves they made. No district Deluca, just every single other point. People think I hate people think I hate Luca and I'm like, no, I think he's a transcendent talent, but I'm sorry it takes more than one player to win a championship. But the recipe that they have right now is Luca plus top 5 defense. Now I'm now I'm interested. If the defense is real and yesterday, like I said, the top 5 and the defense that they played against the Chicago Bulls yesterday, one of the better offenses in basketball and they were healthy, the bulls were holding them to 99 points, I think. They just look really good. And Chris steps hasn't even been on the floor and Christoph hasn't been a problem defensively this season. He's been actually been really good as well. Not really playing the 5 playing a lot of splitting his time between the two front court positions and it's been really successful for them. So I think we should throw them into the mix. I don't think there is as good as the warriors. I don't think they beat the warriors, but I do think that in a playoff series against most teams in the west, like I think it's gonna be a battle is what else do. And if they were to upset a team like Phoenix, it wouldn't shock me at all. I guess. I mean, I guess that's what I'm trying to say. I mean, I think that's a good point. I'm glad you brought that up. "Murray by the time the playoffs started. Why wouldn't we? You know what I mean? I doubt that there would be some heavy minutes restriction. Again, not a doctor, saw him do a windmill on Instagram. That's really all. But you look at some of the lineup data here. So the starting 5 for the nuggets, will Barton Aaron Gordon, jokic, Monte Morris, and Jeff Green. Their offensive rating, that's their number one used 5 million at this season. The offensive rating is one 21.6. That's not that does not compute in reality when it comes to assessing and analyzing how offenses function. The net rating is 9. So the defense doesn't even like that excellent. But they're just very good. Jokic is probably the conversation about who the best player in the world is. I don't think there's an answer right now to be honest with you. Certainly. No disrespect to Kevin Durant. Who I still would take above anyone for one playoff series. But Giannis is on a tear this season. He's been out of his mind. And as you said, yogic just numbers are surreal. They're like historical. If he keeps this up, he's gonna be one of the greatest players who ever knew. Can you repeat, can you repeat their offensive rating one more time? It's one 21.6. Yeah, that's higher than the warrior's death lineup with Kevin Durant in 2017. For context. That means Steph Curry Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant Andre Iguodala draymond green. They're offensive rating was one 20.9. In the 2017 season. And the nuggets are doing better than that with jokic Barton green. Morris, and I don't even remember the 5th person out. Wow, that was incredible. On the fly, statistical lookup by you. Wow. Thank you. I'm very impressed. Thank you. That's incredible stuff. So I'm not trying to call you out, but when Michael Porter junior, I remember at a conversation with Michael Porter junior, your ass just went up when I just said, I'm not sure. But you're about to call me out. No, I think didn't you say that you thought that the nuggets should consider blowing it up or am I misremembering? I didn't think they should, I never said blow it up..

"Down a windmill? And playing in a game. I know there's like lateral movement. I would like to genuinely hear some of the science behind minutes restrictions. Also, I'm not saying that I disagree with them. I'm just curious on a scientific perspective like how it works for someone like Klay Thompson, who it's like you're ready to play in an NBA game, but only I don't know, I'm just interested by it. But anyway, on with the science behind the ramp up is what you want? Yeah, like isn't the part before you get in the game the ramp up, you know? I don't know. I don't know. I think a lot of it is also they don't know what they're talking about to be honest. It's just a lot of mysterious what have you and yeah it's a very cloudy field and even the professionals are in a 100% certain. But when I just saw Jamal Murray, do a windmill, I was like, what is the difference between this and playing? How far can this person actually be from competing in the NBA? Which brings us again to Gavin's question. And to answer it just like outright, I think the answer is Jamal Murray. I think the answer's Murray as well. Yeah, 'cause we've seen Davis. We've seen that movie. We've seen the healthy Davis on the Lakers. Even if they exclusively played him at the 5 with Trevor ariza with maybe Kendrick nun comes back and they just have more options with Malik monk supposedly the savior who just is a complete no show against the grizzlies last night. Monk has been good. And Mongols my favorite signing in there is a reason. Okay, fair. I won't back on monk too. But as great as LeBron has looked, I just don't consider them. Kendrick nun is gonna come back and play major minutes too according to Frank Vogel. That doesn't change your name. Maybe we should admit this question to say AG and kenton. Exactly..

"Actually in the yesterday. So you ready, Mike? I'm ready. They're my title favorite. The warriors are my title favorite. I've seen enough. I've seen enough. The fact that clay had the confidence to go for that dunk, told me all I needed to know. This guy's not pulling a single punch. He's got the utmost confidence in his body. And beyond that, and we've touched on this. The depth they have, I think, is what gives me hope for them against match them up against any of the league. I think you told me recently you think Brooklyn is maybe still your title favorite, which I understand. The way I look at it, I think stuff are both just kind of unstoppable in their own ways. I know Steph's had this quote unquote slump recently. I'm not worried about that in the slightest. But beyond that, I just look at the overall depth that Golden State has, and what they've cultivated with those role players, I just don't think any other team in the league has that frankly. I think the warriors can play so many different styles. Their defense is still remarkable. I'm not worried about them, certainly offensively. I don't think that they're going to stay outside of the top ten. Especially once clay gets worked back into the lineup, I just look at them as having that distinct advantage over Brooklyn over Utah over Phoenix when it comes to guys two through 8. And the fact that they can throw out all these different kinds of players in a playoff series, whether it's pool one night, whether it's GP two, another night auto border, B Lisa, et cetera, even comminges a guy that can come in for certain defensive possessions and make a huge impact. So I genuinely do believe the other title favorite and I know I said I was going to have a hot take, but I don't even think it's that hot, man. I just think that they have such a well balanced rosser now in a way that they didn't even during their title years. I two things, I do not think that that is that hot. And I also am basically out of the title favorite picking business after watching. The Brooklyn Nets played to Antonio spurs over the weekend. Just like what is happening with this team that yeah, there's a lot of teams, I think, can win the title this year. I'll just leave it at that. I think your heat can win the title. I think the bucks come on the title. I think the nest can win the title. I think the sons, the jazz, the warriors, the there's like, I don't even know. But this also leads us into our first email of the episode, which is coming in from Gavin..

"I'm also going to say, I took for me personally. I took the pacers and blazers off because I've talked about them kind of to the point of people are tired of it. Here, so I picked three different teams. So my first one, the Chicago Bulls. The bulls are 25 and ten. They are now two games up on both the nets in the box. They've won 8 straight in the east. They're starting to close in on the jazz sons and warriors just a little bit for the best record in the league. And the bulls don't look like they're going anywhere anytime soon. They look pretty pretty solid. And now I say that is, there may be a piece or two away from you starting to look at them as like, man, this seems legit. And they could contend. The other thing why I have my eye on the bulls is they have the ability to make kind of a big move without hurting their current production levels. Okay. Because you're not going to trade Lonzo, you're not going to trade. Derozan, not Caruso, those are kind of your key guys. Around those guys, though, this is some of their tradable salary that they could move. And then none of them individually is all that great. But you start stacking them together, they start to look pretty good. So I'm just going to kind of give them to you in alphabetical order here. But Tory Brown junior, 5.2 million, Derek Jones junior, 9.7 million, Kobe white, 5.8 million, and Patrick Williams, 7.4 million. And so I'll talk them in pieces. Brown and Jones combined, you're already at almost $15 million in alcohol and salary. That's pretty good already for two guys that are kind of fringe rotation, guys. They're in and out of rotation. But if you had Williams or white who are also value plays for an acquiring team as young players that at least have a couple more years left under contract especially Williams, now you've added not only matching salary, but you've added some value. They're a little shy on draft picks, that part is a little bit tricky for them to come up with. They got to get a little creative in the way they were those because it would have to be. If we've delivered to Orlando and delivered to San Antonio, then we could give you this. But that's something you can do with creative language on those, but I would think Williams is a guy know a ton of teams like. And if you're the bulls, I think you've got to look at it and say, do you want to try to live in two worlds or we're pretty good right now, but then we've got these young guys that can help us move them forward or do we really want to push in and go all in and go for it? We just talked about Jeremy grant. Another guy I think it would be great for them is Harrison Barnes. Yes. Very easily acquirable. Always. Every year. I know right in there some board is going to be for 20 teams this year. But acquirable guys because of their numbers. And their play in positional fit. Also important there in Chicago. Because I feel like they need one more, more true power forward sized player to help them out. So I have them at the top of my list. All right, let me add to it. The Atlanta Hawks..

"It sounds like within the next couple of days and so we'll come back out of the health and safety protocols. As you said, they have rondo, rondo will come in now as Garland's backup. But those aren't two guys who really can play together. I mean, they maybe they will just because they kind of have to. It's not ideal. But this puts for at least the next couple of weeks, puts a lot of pressure on guys like Lamar Stevens, who's really more of a three than he is a two. And then Dylan windler, who's been unable to stay healthy for most of his career, the first three years of hit are two and a half years now. I guess he's misconceived, but then they've got RG nem hard on a two way. So you're going to see some names you probably aren't overly familiar with for the calves just because they're going to need those guys. It makes me wonder, we've said over and over again that guy carousel verb makes a lot of sense for this team. Now do you get lavert because you kind of feels almost two roles? He could be. That's starting wing alongside Garland and also then shift over B in effect the back up point guard. If not levert, somebody like that. Again, it sounds like two, three weeks, so it'll be back. Before the end of January, at least the probably about three weeks or so ahead of the trade deadline. But it's a spot where you can use some depth anyway. Yeah, absolutely. Now the cabs have lost four of their last 6 games. They're a bit of a scared, but I'll tell you what, I'm excited for tonight. It's gonna be cabs against grizzlies two of the young teams in the NBA that have really made waves this season and Darius Garland is not on the injury report anymore. So should be back in action tonight to take on John morant. This is gonna be a great matchup. I'm excited for this one. Grizzlies are coming off stomping the nets last night in Brooklyn. That's the only downside for them. They're coming in on a back to back with travel. But I mean, they went in and handled Brooklyn with these. If you look at the final score, probably looks closer than you're probably like, yeah, that's not that bad, but it wasn't as close as that final score looks. I mean, they really hammered that team and really, really took care of them with very little problem. Their Brooklyn was especially led by ja, who was great. Once again, player of the week. John morant. I wish conference. And yes, he was player of the week, which is, I mean, he's been absolutely phenomenal..

"There was a lot of stuff coming out from aaron. Even did you know different interviews and stuff in regards to it kind of giving them like his subliminal demands. A what what could make this work giving you some indication that maybe just maybe we'd be able to mend these fences. Ben simmons has done nothing of the sort like he's just said chilin he's chilly he's not doing any press. He's not answering any questions about it. he's just coming. And i won't play for the sixers again now. I am not in ben. Simmons is camp. So i don't i don't know if he's just playing a really good game hardball or if he really believes that but from the sixers perspective yes you want the man back. I get it but i would make the argument at this point. That if he's not there this year and he doesn't make his money I don't see how that really helps you as a at the sixers sixers. Okay right like yeah. You're going to spite him. You're gonna cut off your nose despite your face so to speak got it now. I'm not are more. I get it you. You ain't afraid. I understand but if you bring him back this year i don't think you get great version of ben simmons. If for some reason you guys can fix that and get them in the building and he doesn't want to lose all of this money and so he reports so he doesn't have to lose the money. I i think that's a bad thing to have around your organization right now full disclosure. I don't know what teams are offering for. Ben simmons like. I wouldn't be in the habit of giving them away for bag of chips either so that plays into it as well but if there's a deal that's palatable and you're going to get some stuff that can really supplement. Ben simmons into by ben simmons. I'm sorry joy lead into by his harris and some of the pieces. you have. I think you do that because this is going to be a mess. Whether he's staying away all year and people are answering questions. And there's this massive hole in your lineup. Or if he comes back in is like a shell of himself. It doesn't want to be there and doesn't get along with his teammates either. Way it's a shit show what you don't want as what we saw last year would james harden and where he's comes out of he comes to to your camp after he told you all summer i would like to. I don't wanna be here after he told you and you brought him back to camp and he came back overweight. You saw the memes and things like that. He's just passes the people's feet he's not even shrimping correct and he's making his team as pissed at him. You don't want that to happen. Because they're in a totally different situation than the rockets where the sixers and totally different situation. The rockets where last year and that they are trying to compete for a title to derived dot habits there no window right now and you don't want that to seep into the locker room and let's be real man. All these feelings are valid right. When you about ben simmons wanting to be traded of course he wants to be traded dog. You'd fucking said that he's not he didn't even say that you said basically that he couldn't win with you with him on the roster you said that along the fact after a playoff game in which he missed those free throws it was not clutch down the stretch of time when he needed his team to have his back. They did not so okay. it's untended wash. should it be here. You see it from the sixers vantage point. Y'all man. how many times are you going to not be clutch in a postseason series and come up short. How many times you're gonna do that from the sixers vantage point. And then you see it from joel. Embiid point where yo if there's honesty all the time it's from joel. Embiid he said all. This is borderline Kinda disrespectful was his works. He was like y'all man we actually made the roster in your eyes to fit a longer. You're in your game. Play and ben simmons we made a roster to where we got shooters we got players that can play alongside you and it still didn't work..

"Now the the one thing that i can't put my finger on it you might have a better feel for it than i do is what james wiseman looks like right now like why. Where is he his evolution to being a contributor on a championship level team. Do you have to be not a world less than i do. have some. I do have some insight but go ahead. yeah. And i'm saying not not not a hall of famer not not reaching his potential as a as a high pick like that. I'm just talking about. Can he be a solid contributor that you can count on in a championship run. And if those things align i would not cal golden state. They wouldn't be a favorite of mine. But i would put them in the mix to be. You don't wanna see them. I promise you that yeah. I don't know where wiseman is right now in terms of how he can contribute to a team right now because he hasn't played any games right. Well what i will say is. I talked to him This summer for story. I'm doing. It's gonna come on a couple of weeks now beyond a albion on the lookout for that It so i Saga to him and like you really see that he wants this bro. Like he really wants this This season workout. He really was. You could tell that. He was kind of affected by Last year with the injuries with Can call covert and then also other rookies playing better than he did right. You know the the anthony edwards of the world the lamelo balls of the world who got a lot of acclaim after their first year. And they're already writing this dude off. And so i saw that i listen. I heard that on a we had a phone call about the about a month ago and then Also seen him up close at practice even like the post practice stuff where he's taking every drove very seriously in the way that like sometimes you just want to tell him to relax like if you miss a shot. It's not the end of the world right but there's a lot If he misses his shot thuc right or something. Like that. or things. Like that to where you're saying you know he wants this. You just want to tell them just to settle down and just let the game come to you. But he's like yo man. I needed this year. And so there's a lot of fire under james wise but you could see. I just want i. Just if i was a coach. I want him to channel. Okay yeah it's okay. You got this relaxed. Yeah because i was gonna say you got to harness. That could be that. That's that's a dangerous area. I've lived in that area where there's so much riding on it in your mind that when it goes well it's great and if you will and if it goes bad you've just built up so much unneeded pressure like yeah that that it really is counterproductive. So but i think. Steve kerr is great For that in their style. And i want to go back to something because you talked about nash. Those guys just real quick mention inside the type of camp that it looked like like you said they looked like it was all vibes..

Nike CEO John Donahoe's Lessons on Servant Leadership

"What star. John rains that i am most associate with you. Which is servant leadership. And i'd love if you could describe your philosophy on servant leadership especially try to conceptualize it for much smaller organizations. What does it mean to serve leader as a ceo of a bunch of ceo's around the table how should they think about how that philosophy conform away they run their business so when i talk about servant leadership. It's frankly the the way. I learned to lead because i actually learned the lead in partnership a ban where you aren't really empowered to do anything to you have to earn the respect and the followership of others. You guys don't have that as founders. But i do think you'll find that. Many of the best leaders exhibited the principles servant leadership. And i just say how do i serve serve. The purpose of the organization serve the customers served. The employees serve the communities in which we operate in a jim collins called at level five leadership other people call from things. But it's when someone it's not about the leader it's about what it is. We are trying to accomplish right and some of the antithesis of what's hot silicon valley at different times the narrative. Always around the all-powerful founder. They're all powerful leader. And i think there's actually very few examples where that actually great sustainable companies come out of that my leadership role model for large parts of my career with phil jackson of the chicago bulls. Now it'd be steve kerr for your younger and would always struck me. He was able to do is get people who actually were better than he was klay. Together he got michael jordan. Scottie pippen dennis. Rodman caster characters to win six championships. It got shack kobe to play together. You look at you. Look at steve kerr the warriors right. Now he's getting. Somehow he's getting steph curry klay thompson and kevin durant andrew mongering all vying to something greater and they win i view with how do you build high performance teams of top talent to win and servant leadership is part of it.

Chris Broussard: LeBron is right, KD, Warriors Big 3 were better than Nets

"Asked about playing in next week's free for the first time on thursday. Lebron james pump the brakes on calling it. An unprecedented collection of talent reminding reporters quote. We forgot about katie. Stephan play. already. I mean there you go there you go right there of course lost back to back finals to the warriors big three that he referenced right then i first sard is back joining us. I don't think so chris. Do you agree with the brown hair. Well i i'm guessing that skip sensors and alterior motive. Oh i won't go there. I'll be interested in seeing what he says. But i'm going with the golden state guys staff clay and and i've got five reasons why number one the pieces fit together better when those three katie went to golden state. We had no questions about whether or not it was going to work because none of the guys are ball dominant. None of them needed the ball in their hands. A lot to be effective and give you twenty plus points. Obviously james harden and car. We have been bald dominant dribble it a lot which can make it more difficult to fit together now. They're fitting together great offensively but theoretically there games are a lot more ball dominant. Golden state guys to golden state was better defensively. And i'm not just talking about draymond green. Who's not even part of this conversation. You add katie. Who was younger and i. I'm sure it was a better defender at that point. Then he can be at this point a little older often an achilles injury and then klay thompson was a legitimately very good defender. He made an all nba. Defensive team steph obviously is in the category of harden and kyrie. None of them are really great defenders. The third thing better shooters as well as hard and kyrie shoe. And they are great shooters steph. Curry is the best shooter in nba history. So good that he changed the game. He literally changed the way the nba is played because he's such a great shooter and clay is arguably arguably the second greatest shooter of all time again that enables you to fit better together and certainly for today's game the better shooters i mean. That's a huge thing. You have fourth no drama. They they they were low maintenance guys in golden state k. d. had a little drama but for the most part that's a low maintenance group in brooklyn i i love his game but i gotta worry about kyrie. He was playing great at the beginning of the season. And then all of a sudden just went awol. Is that going to happen again. Is going to be happy. The entire season playing shooting guard. Or will he get the rich to have the ball in his hands more again even last night. Why was car sitting out. They said back tightness. But i bet you replace the next five games and is fine and plays great like they need to be on the floor as much as possible. I can't be legitimately injured hamstring but kyrie hard and they don't need to be just sitting out to rest are so the drama a is there. And here's the final thing steph and clay before k. got there. They proved that they could lead a team to a championship. They proved they didn't need this transcendent lebron or k. d. or somebody like that to lead them to a championship. They didn't need a stack team. They did it on their own k. D. was certainly the best player on those golden state teams but he went to a champion. Already he is still yet to prove. He can lead his own team to a championship. Even though it was the best player kyri hit one of the greatest shots in nba. History may be the greatest. But obviously that was lebron's team. Kyrie has have much playoff success without lebron james yet and we know harden has yet to prove that he can lead a team to a championship. So for all those reasons. I'm going with golden state

Power Rankings: Can the Clippers stay atop the West?

"Espn's nba power rankings. Talking about how great everything was going in. La or how much noise l. Making right now in the sports universe but the lakers no longer number one in the rankings. So maybe la's fallen down a little. Except the clippers have assumed the number one spot kawhi leonard and company. The nba's best record the clippers. Have a six game. Swing with leonard and paul george entering quarantine due to health and safety protocols and patrick beverley. He's out they had a seven game. Winning streak snapped in atlanta. The co and paul george back after missing just two games due to contact. Tracing the clippers are a deep team. There were deep team last year. But i think bach gives them a premium over mantras harrell because he can spread the floor. He can shoot the three and he can rim defend. He can defend the paint at certainly blocked shots. At least he's very good defender. As is harold box more versatile moreover more versatile player you can play a lot of big next to a bacha because he can do some things that some modern pigs can't but serge ibaka is not the reason that they're you know this good. They've played together another season. Tyler is doing a very good job. Don't forget and this goes for what i said about the nets last segment to we're in a covert year. Still where there's not practice like. They're normally is and people are socially distanced so first year teams that come together like the nets last year like brooklyn. This year are at a disadvantage but brooklyn's now going on their second year with sorry. The clippers are largely with the same cast. And yet you know. Lou will mantras harrell reggie jackson nick tomb. Which was a big pickup nick. A tumor he got a max deal or something close to it. Because he was the status all star. I mentioned this last week but at that time. Are you sure that you knew who was going to be better between kawhi leonard klay thompson and nick platoon. But he was in that category people when he got his deal. Weren't even like oh. That's too much for nick petunia. Like oh he's really good player. Lost interest on a noncompetitive team. He looks interested again. Remember he got a max deal wasn't no one. Did him any favors. He earned it so. That's a big pickup for them. Interested nick we can play making do some things but none of this really matters to me for the clippers and i understand power. Rankings are based on regular season performance. Guys until paul. George shows up as like this if paul george showed up his normal self. The clippers are still at a disadvantage against the lakers because kawai and libron or both superstars as is a de. Paul george is the next thing to a superstar. Paul george is not a five star player. He's a four and a half star player. So even if paul george it shows up as his normal self. Ain't going to be enough for the clippers in the playoffs. He has to be just to see but instead of that or even stay the same. He gets in the playoffs. So i don't believe in this clippers team in the play. I don't care what they do. In the regular season. Until i see paul george show up when it matters in the playoffs. A believer

The Golden State Warriors Path to Regain Glory

"Hello hello pablo. I am so excited to talk to you today. Because you have been digging into the golden state warriors and you've talked to their players. Their coaches their executives. But i want to know what other people are curious about. They hear that you're writing a future on the warriors. What did they want to know can still work can steph curry dragged his team by the scruff of its neck into the playoff field. Can they approximate without klay thompson. Kevin durant gone even a glimmer of what they were during their dynasty. And that's what people wanna know. And at the center of all of this kevin this week in particular is steph curry and we can't begin this conversation without talking about what he did specifically on sunday night. How would you describe what you saw. It was a volcano curry leads. In one hand or just off balance grows it up. It's good he's got fifty. Career screen takes a deep free. It's god fifty nine points. Curry takes another three. It's up job. He's got sixty two just unspeakable three point attempts that no person with a good conscience ever a nation of basketball coaches is freaking out. Because they're going to have fourteen year olds in practice pulling up from thirty seven feet. There was the sense coming out of their very met to into road trip. That steps showing few signs he might. It's gonna happen. It may happen. Don't you think it's going to happen. He's starting to move differently. We're starting to find him. The ball and places he likes it and as draymond green said to somebody on the staff. All it takes is one in. We saw that one sunday night against portland and essentially recreated the steph. We knew for those five years over the dynasty. Let's be clear about what the prelude to that career high sixty two was because he was shooting. What like twenty percent from three in those first two games so when people are begging hoping for that volcano to start shaking again. Why do you think it actually ended up exploding as it did. I mean one is just the laws of inevitability second is in your staff. They all emphasize this. And it sounds a little bit like spin. If you're if you're sort of cynical which is look. He's playing with guys that he's never played with before. But when you really start digging into it and you remember what it was like to watch the weird they don't run scripted sets all that much mall. Those great beautiful plays that you see that. Look like basketball ballet. They use intuition. They use a million reps playing together to sort of know where everybody's going to be almost telepathically on the floor. And so you've seen that a million times steph. Runs comes off a pick and roll. He gives the ball up. He relocates to the corner other people kind of follow him there. Somebody comes off the other side and then steph kind of relocates again and you find him and it's so second nature if you watched it for five straight years you come to take it for granted but if the other guys on. The floor aren't versed in the dark arts of golden state warriors movement. It's harder and it was something that i think other teammates. The new guys andrew wiggins kelly oubre rookie. James wideman guys. Who haven't played as long with him. It takes a little while to get in the rhythm. There was like a moment. I think in the milwaukee their second loss of the season where you saw step come off one of those speaking roles and he was going to kind of go fast too slow to the right corner and there was somebody there right and it wasn't the fault of a teammate. It's just they're not equipped with the intuition and just the nuances of golden state warriors basketball. Which essentially is how do we find steph. The right shot at the right moment at the right time precisely where he wants it. It's funny
