"On the P three Orion. They could hear a great scraping noise through their hydrophones. Sailors on the Kitty Hawk said the scraping noise lasted 5 to 8 minutes. Is the submarine dragged along the keel? If Simcoe was quoted on the website Russia Beyond recalling that the first thought was that the conning tower had been destroyed in the submarines body was cut to pieces. They confirmed that the periscope of attendants were still working when they felt the second strike on the starboard side. The collision could have been much worse. It was a glancing blow off the right side of Kitty Hawks bow. The second strike that of Cinco Felt was when the submarine's propeller struck the whole of the Kitty Hawk breaking off a piece that was left in the kitty Hawks bow. The submarine was forced to surface. Kittyhawk immediately launched a pair of S H three seeking helicopters to render assistance. Submarine appear to have a dent or crease between its stern and sail. Someone did not answer the kitty Hawks offers of assistance, nor did it requested me on the Soviet government refused to comment. News reports at the time said that the Kitty Hawk detected no nuclear leak from the submarine and that President Reagan was apprised of the situation. The initial reports were that the Kitty Hawk had taken only superficial damage. Within a day. The neighbor reported that the carrier was taking on water. The collision had ruptured the fuel tanks during aircraft fuel, which was then becoming contaminated with seawater. The crew had to pump the fuel from the tank. The Kitty Hawk had to hold the bow and a gash from somebody's propeller below the water line. Divers next day brought up a piece of the propeller. They've been launched in the whole of the crew had it mounted in a hangar. The Navy described the damage is minor, saying that could be repaired at sea. "Yes we last year I called you options for late March when we ended up going to Hawaii and it was a wonderful trip but this year we plan on one of these close to mine and worse we're starting our adventure and out of Iraq is and they're never going to get shown up by ships I model not the New England area I'm just a little nervous about going to that area it's not familiar to me and I know you know it's rather congested part of the world and then from the south I know it's a totally different world well you'll be fine I don't even yeah so are you gonna if you get tired on a day you're going to look for a place to stay or you're going to try to plan out a pretty detailed itinerary with a set schedule day by day well the first part of the Spanish that will go on to stay at Kitty Hawk only out of banks and then the next day we're going to travel five or six hours stop stay the night and then end up and well hidden suit to places that you got in mind is Newport Rhode Island and barber my Newport Rhode Island data burst burst in the New England area I've been I've been to both in their great with bar harbor you can have whether that'll make it tough for you to to have the full experience there so watch the weather forecast maybe be a little flexible on your arrival there based on the weather Newport's L. fantastic what month of the year you doing this I'm sorry we're it's going to be the second week in September all fantastic because once you get past Labor Day things will be less crowded for you in New England your available I wanted to get there before that I was doing was a big area in the fall or a leaf changes right so so much and I if you're gonna do some of the drives to see the leaves try to do that on week days because the weekends especially with all the people who go up from Boston to see the leaves it gets really crowded and do that kind of exploring weekday as much as you can is much as that'll fit your temporary and I want to tell you about an app I'd like to you to.

Autonomous helicopter joins its rover buddy for Mars 2020 mission

"A mars helicopter so this thing it's a very small quad copter think of it is <hes> what else toy drones you could buy from amazon for kinda cheap but this isn't very cheap and it's not very small. It's about the size is of a shoebox with the rotors about <hes> about four feet wide and this helicopter is not mission critical go so they just attached this to the belly of the mars rover in the high one cleanroom at jet propulsion propulsion laboratory in pasadena california sing is solar powered and it has the mars helicopter delivery system which which will deliver well deliver the the helicopter to mars and also that's what helps it launch and <hes> <hes> shields it from debris during entry descent and landing the helicopter will remain encapsulated in the mars helicopter the delivery system after landing deploying to the surface once a suitable area conduct test flights is found in the crater where they land now. It's a very high risk high reward technology demonstration. If this helicopter encounters difficulties difficulties the science of the mars twenty twenty mission won't be impacted but if the helicopter is successful and if it takes flight is designed the future missions to mars could possibly have other quad captors other drone copters. Yes that could deploy when they get there so <hes> spokesman from g._p._l. Said our job is to. I prefer to prove that autonomous controlled flight can be executed in the extremely thin martian atmosphere since our helicopter is designed as a flight test of experimental technology carries no science instruments but if he proved powered flight on mars can work we look forward to the day when mars helicopters aw can play an important role in future explorations of the red planet. Mars is big world and there's lots of geography on mars. There's cliffs caves in deep craters that a rover just can't get too and that's why something like a helicopter like a quad copter is very important to the future missions on the red planet. They can act as scouts. They can film inside caves. They can film inside craters. That could take pictures. They could take amazing photos of things that we would never be able to see if we were just relying on rovers and nasa intends to establish a sustained human presence on the moon through there nasa artemis miss lunar exploration missions and they could possibly use <hes> quite captors on the moon as well so <hes> jim breitenstein nastase administrator said the rate brothers flew the first plane kitty hawk north carolina but they built it in dayton and the mars helicopter destined to be the first aircraft to fly in another world was built in pasadena california join now to the twenty twenty rover. It is yet another example of how nasa artemis generation is expanding humanities reach in our solar system with this joining of two grace spacecraft. I can say definitively. I believe that all the pieces are in place for historic mission of exploration together mars twenty twenty and the mars helicopter will help define the future of science and exploration of the red planet for decades to come mars twenty twenty with the helicopter on board will launch an a u._c._l._a. Atlas five rocket in in july of twenty twenty from space launch complex forty one it cape canaveral air force station in florida in it'll land on mars <music> on february eighteenth of twenty twenty one the rover will be the first space craft and the history of planetary exploration with the ability to accurately re target its point if touchdown during the landing sequence and this new helicopter the mars twenty twenty helicopter it could possibly return so amazing results showing that we can fly a helicopter on another world and if that's the case. There's going to be a lot of saying. It's happening with a lot more helicopters in the future

"And so a lot of the illicitties were given a choice of military, or jail and with that, you know, the judge given that type of a sentence, they figured they go in the navy. They thought it would be safer, and so that happened. And you had a lot of unhappy in a. Disenfranchised, black sailors, who were working in the ship's laundry, working in the in the galleys and below decks, and that being treated fairly in their eyes. And so they. They weren't happy as you might magin pretty much wide spread of that time, what were those incidents you mentioned that, that inspired the novel, the incidents that I found in my research, gloriously, was the Kitty Hawk riot. That was one of the biggest ones that took place on. That was in October seventy two but there was four days later, there was one on the Hoste that took place, as well. That was kind of. Not as widespread as big nuns publicized. But it's all in the same congressional reports and then the constellation had demonstration, which they considered kind of an aborted mutiny. And so there's also a huge fire on the forestall in that era. Young end of the ranger had sabotage, they've found paint scrapers another middle in the gears, the scanty had collisions at sea and get all of these ships had pretty much wide spread drug use because drugs were so available, especially in places like the Philippines were a lot of these ships, made port visits, and then, of course, you know, suicide was kind of it's always present aboard ship. But then the navy also at that time, had just actually ended at recently is the non judicial punishment of bread and water to where they could be it locked up in the Brig for three days on nothing but bread and water. And of course that happened quite. A bit. And so, again, the, the crew wasn't happy about that, when you say race riot on the Kitty Hawk like what, how did that go down? Like what actually happened largely as portrayed in the book, one of the black sailors was so upset, and so angry that he kind of we wanted to get. Just lash out. Get revenge is kind of take matters into his own hand in my book, when it was, was somebody that gave up somebody else's name to get somebody in trouble in it involved a drug ring. So there's a bit of intrigue, it out. I'm largely crime writer. And so I I- crime writer, military writers, they don't know which I am so kind of both. And so without those two components I found that it was. More fun for me to imagine what it would be like. And why this one guy would take matters into his own hands instead of igniting, hold race. Right. But he did was hugest going after one guy, but he had his buddies with him and so his buddies, kind of they overstepped. And so they kind of escalated things, and what happened actually on the Kitty Hawk, which happens in the book, as well, these black sailors, went into the white berthing spaces where white sailors were sleep because, again, this is a ship of over over four thousand men who seconded. Well, it was self segregated really the, the navy didn't mandate that it'd be segregated but the black crew segregated themselves to the degree where they didn't want. White authority coming down to police them. They wanted to have their own separate space and so again, that's that's in the book as well. And so, the black sailors, went into the white berthing spaces and just started yanking guys, on Iraq's just pummeling them and that kind of set off kind of a role in effect throughout the ship. So there's fighting in passageways fighting the areas in as the as captain porter says he was surprised that all of the casualties were white..

"Hires aviation industry veteran to lead new transportation division for those of you who may not know Airbnb is I guess you could call it a home sharing service, if you own a home or an apartment, and you can list it as valuable for others to use for a fee. It's kind of like making a hotel reservation, except it's for somebody's house. My wife, and I did that a couple of times with with great success. But they've hired. Fred read to lead the air BNB global, head of transportation mex- thi this is kind of kind of interesting to think about it is you know, I had a couple of different. Durations in my thought about this in my first reaction was oh, well, they're probably figuring out how to do for part one thirty five charter operators. What they've done for home rental market because I think that's probably an area where you have someone like Airbnb could come in and really make that a much more efficient. Marketplace need for people to charters and so on and yet reads background is strictly airline. I would have thought that the airlines with a kind of load factors. They're running which are pretty high. These days would not be real interested in, you know, working closely with someone like Airbnb who would want a cut of the profits on the other hand, they're talking the story here about kind of end to end travel platform, and I guess my end, and they mean, they can book your whole trip for you book. Somebody's house at your destination book airline travel to get there. So I I have to believe that they really are thinking about the airlines, and I guess I guess. the question is how you know. How do they are they going to have the kind of purchasing power with airlines are going to have to play along and say, okay, fine. You know, we'll give you cut of the profits. Because you've got the ability to book such a large percentage of the tickets being sold. Yeah. That's that's what I think end to end. I mean, you look at reeds background. "Family injury family drama. Really? How let's. Where to start with this? So you know, that we we ended up asking what are three characteristics of this person. We've never done a tandem before. But how do you want to do you want to focus on both of them? Or do we want to talk about Wilbur mostly? Let's start. We can start Wilbur Wilbur was that they had that survive genius that you required. And this is what I read in college. But at the end of it, I I was just cold because I'm from Virginia. I went to Kitty Hawk as a kid all the time. Like, there's nothing here that helped me how they did this thing. But when I heard the research, I found out that this guy after this sounds crazy. But he murderer basically shattered his jaw who would later be electrocuted. Eighteen ninety six he went into it three year depression, where he didn't leave the house when he came out. He was obsessed with light that became his mission. Okay. Here's a man who had this incredible capability. So the three things would be genius tenacity grit because this is a guy who dropped out of high school had no training at all. The biggest thing has had a bike shop with his brother, and he tells his father who's a Bishop, and there's a whole story there. I'm going to Kitty Hawk to invent flying. And be like you're saying we're gonna go flying saucer. So. So many questions, let's do the job raking thing. So why why is that why was that moment important as life and the three years he didn't leave his house because name was Oliver crook hall, and what happened was he shattered his John this time. There was a Komor biddies one thing would lead to another huge on his way to Yale. He was he was going to go to Yale. He was a great student when this happened he became ill. You went into the dark. Knight, fellow his mother was dying. He ended up carrying herpes for you. So Limbaugh who called the Byrd man into. He was over in Germany flying jumping outside the close with these wings horseback. One percents to read about him and becomes staff a guy who's almost like an artist without a mission. He writes, his father. I don't like business. I like the light to the mind as much more business orientated. Hurt any grounds onto this thing? And he never left to go. Wow. Could make the argument that if he just went to yell and did that thing and did the trajectory that he was on that he never would have found that passion. Absolutely. Because it allows people I believe people have incredible talents. But it's it's who follows that. And you know, there was no way for him to follow anyone's because flight was jeering Beeri at the beginning. This is very interesting to see had a patent after he flew in nineteen three for the control system. Not the plane guys jumping off cliffs and with the crazy things that they were actually fine. But whatever control, you know, he he went and he spoke to the western society of engineers in Chicago. And what he did he got the piece of paper because he wanted to demonstrate and this is a very radical theory at the time that flight was basically unstable secretary Langley for the Smithsonian, which is a whole nother story to Langley believe flight with like a locomotive you just put a big engine on it point the plane to the sky lie straight over said, no flight inherently unstable. So he came up with the ailerons elevator and rudder the fused. Every airline today. So let's be the genius. So well, all three of these. But one thing that struck me when I might limited knowledge of these gentlemen is how hard they studied flight and as much as they could. And how how they observed the birds for you can tell me more hours. Right. They were just watch birds. So they had to really work at their genius. Right. Exactly. Exactly. And so so we're we're starting to study these briefing Kitty Hawk and before that he came out with the theory he took in inner tube box. Any twist at the end of it. And we came up with was called wing warping. Did he he he saw how birds turn would just flex dancer their wings? So I am self and went outside of Dayton Ohio with testing to and he worked wings of this flying wing basically in made the turn. Well, this would be ailerons which you know, you look out your window of an airliner, and you see those big flat turning down those are an around. So he came up with this theory before anybody else, did, you know, it a very radical theory. Because everybody else believe he just sort of ships your way, and it'll turn. But yeah. So this is this is the beginning of flight, and he got that from watching birds. Yeah. He absolutely. It would study the birds how much how often do you watch can you quantify how much and how often for how many years you watched birds? Basically it was years. He would go out there. And here's another thing too. When he got sick, his father Bishop melt, who by the way, it was a very overbearing autocrat, and who started this whole thing that everybody's equal. And that's why the world beliefs. They both Bennett he he took out of his library. All these books on animal flight, his father happened to have anyone out, and he would just observe the birds for our years of doing this and writing sketches and try and see because he didn't believe that. It was power. He has another radical theory key believe that if you built the correct wing you could fly forever without an engine. What do we call it gliding today on thermals? That's hawks. Do really cool. Can you give us an example of his tenacity? Right brass. I'm talking about prepared just tuning in nineteen Ninety-two. He's he's keeps trying to fly. And what happens is every time. He turns the plane turns down just like an spiral every time. And by the way, he doesn't fly until nineteen two. He's even baldness. So what does he do? He goes back, and he builds a wind tunnel because here's here's where the genius. Key finally believed that all the data. Everybody's been working with is totally wrong, absolutely wrong. Start entirely over. In other words, he has to make up all the list. And this is this is something nobody done before he goes over his bicycle shop with his wind tunnel. And he's little delivers a metal. He he's pioneering here what will stand for all time. It's the lift coefficient planes us today. What year did he do this nineteen ninety two until he ended up flying in nineteen? Oh, three years ahead of years of study. And before they even had had it off to Kittyhawk. Absolutely. Here's another thing to one reason people believe that Wilbur and Orville equal because on the day of flight December seventeen I flew that day but on December fourteenth, Wilbur, flew the plane went up and down. It was horrible turn only went up for twelve seconds. It's like a controlled crash, but there's a camera there. They took the famous photo that you always see I that photo went around the world. But the next flight was Wilbur he flew full full minute. Nobody even knew about this. That was the first flight control flight because Orville isn't that plane every oh these guys are equal simply not true. And can you give us an example of the grit of Wilbur? Would be the fact that when he after he flew, okay. I'm pretty flu. He decided to monetize this this plane. But here's the thing. Nobody would give a patent. Nobody. Nobody believed him. Nobody believed that he flew. He didn't get a patent till three years later. Send it in in the patent office kept saying this won't work this this, you know, what it did. Nobody believed in the newspapers were putting headlines like fliers or liars, you know, they just simply didn't believe him. And here's another thing complicated. He believed he was so far ahead of everybody. He went secret 'cause his whole thing. He's afraid people would steal technology. So he wouldn't show anybody that he could fly to so. But what are you doing? She kept improving the plane improving the plane. Finally, it's actually in France, and he flies and everybody sees this guy doing savior eight over in France. And they can't believe any becomes your worldwide celebrity, and that that was well that wasn't Orval warmer that did was he able to profit off of it eventually eventually, but he dies in nineteen twelve from typhoid fever. It's his brother Orville who gets the million later nineteen forty two. And here's another thing too. I'm sarah. Orville gets in a huge fight. Only American actually wrote a huge articles when I sent you. And the fight. It comes over who really invented the plane because they're saying secretary Langley who also NITEL three really his plane could have flown. Orville gets mad and ships away in nineteen. Oh, three flyer. Nineteen twenty eight it doesn't come back through the United States for twenty years. It stays in Britain all the way through World War Two everybody. Charles, Lindbergh, FDR all plead with them to bring it back to America. He says no not until the Smithsonian says we were and it took twenty years did what's what's the case at Langley has it. He did it first language. You got fifty thousand dollars from the government to build a plane, and his theory was really big engine on this thing it's gonna fly. So he put a fifty Marcus. Time flies off this plane in the Potomac the thing doesn't nosed I write down. Right. He's disgraced this is Sony disgrace. All right. There's another guy named Glenn Curtiss Glenn Curtiss hates the rights because they have a patent on the control system. He comes up with an idea, I'll break their patent by make Langley's planes fly. So he really works. It flies at the Smithsonian comes up. Langley could have fought them the launching problem. And they stand by it. But it never did. In every. But yeah. So so this whole this whole fabrication becomes this major major controversy and oracle says fine. He puts it on a steamer that nineteen Ninety-three fire ships to Britain. Where again, it stays like their war to almost get blown up by the Nazis found in Britain. It doesn't come back till nineteen forty eight. The book is called Wright brothers wrong story. How Wilbur Wright solve the problem man flight, William I got a.

"People wanting to look for shortcuts all the time as opposed to long sustained repetitive effort. So the Wright brothers one hundred fifteen years ago yesterday first airplane flight. In kittyhawk. They went there. And they before they went there. They studied birds for years years and years and years they studied birds they would just sit and watch birds and learn as much as they could before they even started to make airplane designs. Let alone test their designs. But they were a Kitty Hawk for three years. Three years failing. That's a long time and even going there. First of all when they got the Kitty Hawk. It was pretty much just them say if you go to Kitty Hawk like big couches and stuffing rent there was pretty much just them. They slept in a tent. The wind would be so strong that they would wake up from their sleep in order to hold down the tent from the gusts of wind. This is one of the brothers said when we crawl out of the tent to fix things the sand. Blinds us it blows across the ground and clouds, but keep it a good attitude. He says we came down here for wind and sand. And boy have we got them both. This is what they came for. But at night it was miserable. And it was freezing cold. He said one of the brothers said we have to have two blankets. But we freeze almost every night. The wind blows on my head and I pull the blanket up over my head when my feet freeze. I reverse the process I keep this up all night and in the morning, I'm hardly able to tell where I'm at pretty miserable all night long because he never got a good sleep for food. They caught fish, and there were a couple of terrible farms on the island again, mostly just sand. So there's no real food. The locals are not happy with them being there. They didn't want extra visitors. They're eating all their food. So they ate tomatoes eggs and biscuits made without milk pretty much every single day. Oh, and it was the whole island is filled with mosquitoes. Orville said that in the summer there were there were so many mosquitoes nearly block out the sun just huge tax of mosquito. Just black huge bags of Iran. His diary said misery, misery and capital misery being there. Three years, and then the first trip to get there. They gotta get there by boat. You had to get there by boat. He was on the boat to get there and the boat almost sank the boat. Hit rocks or something the whole thing saying they almost died right there before you even got to Kitty Hawk for the very first time. Anyway, this is the point I wanted to make. Wilbur died in one thousand nine hundred and the first fight was Naito three Wilbur died. Nineteen twelve but Orville lived until nineteen forty eight. So he saw World War Two bombers. He was able to see from his little tiny plane into these World War Two bombers, and he didn't like it. What somebody said he said we dared to hope that we had invented something that would bring lasting peace to the earth. But we were wrong. We underestimated man's capacity to hate and to corrupt. Good means airplanes for an evil end. No, I don't have any regrets about my part in the invention of the airplane, though. No, one could deplore more than I destruction it had caused. So I bring this up because we were just talking about AI. Everyone's like specialty people. Great. Great, awesome, blah. And I'm like well hold on. Wait. Let's think about these other things that the Wright brothers even for their airplanes. They didn't think about these bad things at airplanes would bring I'm not saying we shouldn't have airplanes. But there should have been like the Wright brothers thought that airplanes would end war. They thought no way. Once people have the ability to fly over cities and drop bombs on each other. No way will they still decide to go to war with each other. But World War One wasn't that far down the road that of course, World War Two. So this I don't know. All technology. Like, I said is like fire. It can be used for good and evil. Anything can be used for good or evil. But my goal of talking about the negative aspects of it is just to not have rose colored glasses thinking, it's all going to be very very dust and gumdrops every new thing comes around what how wrong the right brothers were about their own vegetable at the airplane, not totally wrong..
