"Also on espn two. J. wilson next jason. Fitz all the drama around the cowboys and they haven't even stepped on the field. That's the delight of the dallas cowboys. As you just heard zack. Martin tested positive for cove in nineteen. He'll be out for this game on thursday even though he's vaccinated because at the timeframe so to get the latest on all things cowboys we now head over to the goodyear hotline where we're joined by. Espn cowboys reporter. Todd archer todd. Thanks for the time. Happy labor day my friend. We appreciate your joining us. So obviously we're sitting where we are with zack. Martin situation with kovic. So what's the latest there. Well yeah he's looking like he will miss this game just because of the timeframe just say bad timing situation and from everything i've been able to gather He's okay mild symptoms The ones who have symptoms you. You have to be symptom free and then have to negative tests separated by twenty four hours before you can return and plus. There's a day you need to pass conditioning aspect of this thing as well so The timing of it is not great for the dallas cowboys and connor mcgovern will be. They're starting right guard against a run defense. That was best in the league last year. Down in tampa bay. So it's there's so many question about the cowboys. Just add this one to the mix. Yes can be tough for connor but he. He did play a lot of games last year as well. What what's the protocol now for zack. Martin how does the nfl key take fans through what needs to happen from the time that he has tested positive to what needs to occur for him to get back on the field jay. There's there's differences between whether you're a synthetic or symptomatic in any does have some symptoms and again they're they're considered light or mild as they go so before he player player has to be symptom. Free for x. amount of time. You you know. Cd lamb told us yesterday that he figured out something wrong when he couldn't taste his toothpaste. And then then you figured out. Okay and back to good. 'cause i could taste the meant to face as i was as you as person is for zack martin. Now he's in a process of waiting for the symptoms system side and then you need to take two tests To negative tests separated by twenty four hours. And then you can come back. The cowboys have had not this. Is the ninth player. That's been on the kobe list Since training camp. Let's call it. The all the players have tested positive. None of been able to come back quickly. They needed ten days before they can come back and they all they've all been vaccinated players as well. So that's why the situation zack. Martin where when. Mike mccarthy says i would say he's not playing in this game let him down that path. Because everybody's so far had symptoms has needed the whole break before they were able to come back. Todd how how concerned are the folks internally for the cowboys. Considering doc has had the injuries had to his ankle and shoulder ezekiel elliott last year. Getting punished a little bit. Because at o. Line now not having zack. Marin are they worried about this the aspect or just not having zach just not having failed. Yeah no they're. They're absolutely concerned because i mean he's zeke. Elliott called him their best player yesterday. Their best offensive player. you think. About amari cooper. Zeke elliott dak prescott. Cd-rom and he's saying zack. martin's their best player so that's a huge loss. He said most of their good runs. Come from behind zack. Martin last year he was. They moved to the right tackle. He excelled out there after injuries. And it and it's not just the lawson. Zack martin for this week. Lael collins has had a stinger issue. That's kinda limited his practice here the last couple of weeks. Colonel williams just got off the cova list The other day and it's only now returned to practice and left taco tyrant smith. We played two games last year for next surgery. Now he's saying he feels as good as he's ever felt but again you talked about continuity and what you want in your offense line the cowboys going to this opener without really any continuity on their offensive line plus tack playing his first game and three hundred and forty days. I it's it's not the optimum way that you'd want to enter a season opener for sure we're talking to. Espn cowboys reported. Todd archer. i. I think that the last point you made is significant. I mean this is the first time we've seen we have seen back in a very long time. So what sort of impact is all of this. Make to what we should expect to see from him. Well clearly there has to be some worry right because we've talked about tampa run defense and how good the linebackers are and they have every started back from last year. Super bowl team But if you worry about health. I think that would be the issue the shoulder you you watch them in practice. He looks like that he's throwing. He's he's throwing the ball with zip is pressing the ball down the field. You'd think about the ankle. He's moving around. he's running right. he's running left. He's able to do everything from the ankle so if he doesn't play well thursday night. I don't think it would be health related. It'll be what is surrounding him at the moment. And maybe you obviously some rust from not having played a game from from last october. You know it's funny. The cowboys started training. Camp saying we want to get dak. Prescott preseason action. we don't want his. I live work against tampa bay. Well then he has. The shoulder sat back. And then like. Oh that's overrated. We really don't need that that's okay. He's played enough football. Well they're trying to have it both ways. Obviously because you just have to adapt to whatever circumstances. You're under. But i i think that would play. I just this thursday and going forward and by the time we get to october. I don't think we're gonna remember the shoulder. And i don't think we're going to remember the ankle. Todd what differences will we see this year in the defense. Considering you're under mike nolan. Yeah you know. i don't wanna say they're gonna be better just because they can't be any worse But i think they will be better. dan quinn has brought a new energy to this defense. They're attacking the the the the front guys are back to what they did under rod marinelli get up the field no reading react. Just get up and go that serves demarcus lawrence. Well that serves Randy gregory well. So they're outside. Pashas can just get up and go You know they're they're linebacker. Core micro parsons first. Round pick has looked outstanding. And you think okay. This guy's ready to make a huge impact. But you also have to dial back. He's a rookie in his first game. As into quarterback. When tom brady was a rookie mica person was sixteen months old. So you know. There's a lot of difference there between experience levels between those guys in the secondary they feel okay about it. I think the cowboys will be better. I think if their offense is gonna have to help them and play complementary football. Don't turn it over. Put up some points make it easier for them to play defense and if they can finish in the middle of the league sixteen from twenty eight and that's not only a huge improvement. That probably means the cowboys are gonna make the playoffs in twenty twenty one as always. We appreciate your insights. Thanks so much for the For the information and have a great labor day. Thanks for joining us. My friend hobby liberty before twitter blows you up even saying when i meant to say what changes will be different than they were behind. Mike nolan in the past. That's what we've been saying jank win all day. We're on air a lot. It just happened so a lot of coordinators cowboys. all right. In the meantime we're gonna do some fun. Good lord can talk now. We're going to have some fun we're gonna fill in.

"Think their defense is still mystery. their offense is going to be fine. I mean they're going to be one of those teams that scoring thirty five forty points a game. You just book that where they defensively you know i. They play minnesota team that I was impressed with all things considered i. I haven't heard. I don't know if you've heard mohamed. Ibrahim it's if he's okay or if he's if he's out i don't know but man i just i knew about in last year but if you wanna fall in love with the running back that's the guy to do it. I mean in the minnesota old school style so higher states defense will be tested a secondary which was their achilles heel year ago. They have they have more players. They're young they're athletic. You can see the skill but they're still out of place and vulnerable and so i don't know who could play them. They could test that and really challenge it. But that's what. I think separates ohio state right now is just until they start to play. Better defensively They're there to me. That's the theory they gotta get better so herbie miami gets blown out. Clemson loses north carolina team with a lot of hope from people gets beat by virginia tech. Not a hot take care by the end of the year because you're so good at keeping things balanced by the end of the year. What's our conversation about when it comes to how strong the acc is this here. North carolina. i think I don't know if they were you again. Did they read their press clippings. It's very different for team. They play wants to show that they can beat north carolina. It's a different kind of pressure and it just looked like north. Carolina had a little bit of a deer in the headlights. Get back to being. Virginia tech a little bit so yeah. It was north carolina. I think we'll be okay. Hopefully they learn from from that lesson but it was great to see the hokies. We saw florida state by the way. really compete that was my takeaway from that. Was congrats the notre dame but while florida state full stadium. Mackenzie milton coming in jordan travis. "College football. Clemson is not a rubber stamp in the college football playoff slings to talk to the twenty. Six dixon kishan jalen zubin on espn radio. Jason fits in with. Jay will and we are joined now by college game days. Kirk herbstreit joins us brought to you by barbara barbara salt. Shaving cream twos barbara saul shaving cream for a thick lathering. Close comfortable shave barbasol. The american original for over one hundred years better by barbara saul hervey. Thanks so much for the time. appreciate it obviously. We were all going to be watching georgia and clemson. And i think we all expected a defensive battle right. What surprised you the most though when you watch that game good morning how you guys doing more brother happy. happy college. football asked What surprised me the most. Probably the clemson didn't establish any running game of any kind That that probably was the thing that i walked out there and including dj not necessarily almost even being a willing runner. I kept saying during the broadcast almost from the second series on. You know trump. Taj boyd would run. When he had to and shawn watson. These big games would plan. He would run fifteen to eighteen. Times and trevor grew to get to a point where he was comfortable and running and and dj just kept saying sisters third star is such a future but just his third start. It's interesting to watch him where he is now where he will be. And i think we're all guilty of just assuming because of the way played against boston college last year and then against notre dame in south bend it. Just be turnkey no problem. He's gonna be the same guy that we saw. You know from all these other quarterbacks and we had to keep in mind week one really good defense games moving really fast for him. he'll pick up the pieces and be better and learn from it. But i would think Them not being able to run the ball making their offense and tony elliott which is so rare incredibly predictable with short passing made. It made it much easier for georgia to defend that that offense herbie this year's we're getting ready for the nfl season. Obviously a lot of talk about mack jones. A lot of talk about jalen ato devante smith these guys. And you're thinking you know watching alabama. And i'm like man. That offense is so prolific this year. And then i watch offense this year. I'm like hold on jamieson williams. Wait john michie. bryce it is alabama. Just that team has not going to be stopped this year. Obviously i know people things can happen. But how dominant are they. Go back to your era Duke before you were there they would lose some really good players and people would think okay the transition. It's going to be down a little bit. And then some guy. Young guy and jay williams steps in and it's like oh my god. Yeah they go again. It's kinda like that you know it's like it's recruiting its development in the new rule or players can come in early. I think people really underestimate how powerful that can be for. Really good coach in really good ability to with assistant coaches and a strength coach to develop players. So if you graduate from high school this year this recruiting class and you sign with alabama or whoever has state and you graduated in december and you enroll in college in january. You're obviously there for eight months instead of being at prom and maybe playing baseball running track like a normal student you you graduated in your there for eight months and you go through spring football and you practice against the big guys been watching on tv so you get over your fear or you get over your transition period of wow this game really fast and by the time camp comes around and august. You're kind of like a redshirt freshman and coach savings done that as well as anybody and so when you see some of these players that look like man. They they go again. A lot of it has to do if you went to one of their practices. One not not several one. You'd be like wow. He makes practice so hard and they go against each other so hard that the games are like recess. It's almost like the games are easy and be. Carol used to do that when he was rolling at. Usc was reggie and matt and all those guys you go to an sec practice it was like oh my god this is. This is faster than the game. And it's exactly what What alabama does so. I wouldn't shocked at all plus the ability. Brian coming over from houston texas. He's calling the plays now with sarcoma. Texas I thought there might be a little bit of a feeling out period. But no i mean they hit the ground running and and looked outstanding on both sides of the ball. Just that right now. Them georgia just kind of feel like they're after one week and let's not overreact. But they they kind of look like they're at a different level. We're talking to kirk herbstreit on kishan. Jalen zubin jason fitz. It would j. You just mentioned georgia. And i mean we saw some fatal flaws. I don't want to say fatal flaws. We saw some small flaws from several of the big teams ohio. State georgia oklahoma. All had their struggles in different ways. Does that normalized. Throughout the course of the season in your mind. Yeah i mean again. Going back to jay set about alabama being. Maybe an out wire they throw in some new players and it just looked like man. These guys look like they're juniors right. Bryce young he was complete command of of that. Entire game against miami from the first series on and i thought you know if if you look around at georgia they're still trying to grow. There's you know they've got a lot of injuries trying to figure out You know how they can kind of. Come up with some answers. They're going up against these. Really good these. That's the thing you gotta remember. Really good defense of clemson is the offense. Looked like it's it's it's it's Going through their own growing pains but the defense is mid season form and after the way they played against ohio state last year. Clemson and you can hang your hat on that and feel good about how good the clemson defensively i thought. Cj stroud it was a great example of never has attempted a college pass and his life and first half on the road and a big ten game or the full stadium. You know he he ryan day. We're trying to find answers was working. I would. I would feel ryan day in there with is good as anybody in the country getting half time. Okay this isn't working. Lists is working. We're gonna try a little bit more. This how many times that we watched ohio state with ryan they head coach where the first half games competitive or they're even trailing and then man they find some answers next thing you know boom boom boom and that's really what happened i think. Cj stroud going through that adversity doing a good job and coming through with it and winning the game don't be surprised if he starts to really take off In that offense and he's got dynamic state may have the right up there with the most dynamic playmakers that receiver running back and tight in as there is in the country and the more cj. Just kinda settles. In and becomes that distributor the more terrifying that ohio state offense will become said that alabama and georgia or a cut above whereas osu in that pecking order. That's what they they're kind of that thirteen to me Based on how they looked in the second half based on their.

"I'm jason fitz and look it's week one of the nfl season. And we all know that thursday nights big opener between the cowboys. And the buccaneers. And there's a lot of high expectations frankly for both teams and that's gonna lead to big conversations about how those expectations are met. Jay will and You know we've got a tweet that came out just a little bit ago. This morning from chris mortensen is saying this is the tweet talked or text with a number of nfl coaches and exacts who are nervous about covert nineteen testing today with the number of players who visited their former college teams opening games and social gatherings. This past weekend. I keep thinking about clemson. Georgia and i looked it up. And so the requirement for clemson georgia. There was no vaccination requirement but regardless of whether you were fully vaccinated or not you were required where mask in the concourse area and bathrooms encouraged to wear it in the open seating area. We all saw the images from that. So you've got everybody just sort of doing what they want. Their and players in any situation are taking some sort of calculated risk. This while about our show is because we always tell you exactly where it is right. You know we expect because some athletes have now professional athletes. even though they're a year removed away from college that they're going to go back and do the responsible thing we saw. Trevor lawrence at the clemson game was sitting in a box and trevor lawrence is married. He carries himself into a lot more mature way. But i'm gonna tell you now my rookie year. When i went back to duke to hang out i went out. I kicked it. There were parties. I went to there. Were people i wanted to see. People hadn't seen in a long time and when you're around college football environment. So duke was even college football school but we used to go to tailgates big tailgates all the time. That's why. I said. I think this is going to be so challenging for the league to navigate because you still have the rest of the world. That is moving as if there's really nothing wrong. We saw seventy thousand people north carolina. Virginia tech seventy thousand people. Now it's great. I love football. I love watching it. It's incredible. I love the feeling having bands back in his fans gives me. But you're telling me if you're twenty one twenty two year old young adult that you're going back to college to watch your your team play. You're not gonna go out and have one of those epic nights even if your season is about to start this weekend and you're gonna do it. You know one one word you left out of there is rich like for so many i got money. I went back and this is to me. I think we sort of forget. Sometimes the human element of athletes. And you know for anybody that's ever gone back to wherever wherever you go back to college going back to high school if you got two nickels to rub together when you do it you do different and if you've gone back and you're in a situation where like now you're going back in your senior boys. You're seeing all your friends but you've got a lot more money in the bank. It's skin change. That i turned back to obama's go to just four or five. My friends and i'm getting cheers. Some people at the bar. I bought everybody shot in the bar. The two hundred people in everybody shots on me. Thank you like. That's the kind of things happen because you're like you loved college. Let's act let these guys who were huge professional players. The man in college to go back into feel that now. You're in a big city. you're still kind of. It's just a different feel. You're more isolated an adult. You don't have that same kind of camaraderie where you're living with your teammates. You're you're having training meals with your teammates all the time different feeling college man different environment. Yeah and again. i'm not. I can't say this loudly enough. I'm never gonna fault somebody for being a human being. The hard part about it is. There are such waited expectations. I remember one friend of mine years ago when he first got into the nfl and he was a rookie and we were having lunch one day and i was like so. How's it going. And he said man. The toughest adjustment is life and he said you know. I'm used to traveling everywhere with my teammates. Now in a situation where when practice practices done a bunch of my teammates are grown adults with families. They go home. they're doing other things. I'm just sitting with so much time. And it was driving him crazy. I think about that sort of element of just remembering what it's like to go back. And now you've got a little bit of cash and you're in this situation where you can sorta relive something from last year like there's just a human moment of it's easy to let your guard down and when you're doing that in this environment there's calculated risk comes with all of it. The problem is your calculated risk could impact that thirty-three-year-old. That's also on your team. That's a much different life point. You gotta think about that through the process of it and that's a hard thing to tell somebody that's twenty two. In newly rich lewis is not only people who are just young. I mean you have older guys who maybe don't have the same responsibility right. Maybe don't have kids. i mean so. That's what i said. There's there's a lot of different parameters here. That factor into how challenging is going to be to navigate all these individual beliefs and all these individual behavior tendencies. That let's be honest..

That i turned back to obama's go to four or five. My friends and i'm getting cheers. Some people at the bar. I bought everybody shot in the bar. Yeah the two hundred people in everybody shots on me. Thank you like. That's the kind of things happen because you're like you loved college. Let's act let these guys who were huge professional players. The man in college to go back into feel that now. You're in a big city. You're still kind of. It's just a different feel. You're more isolated of an adult. I'm used to traveling everywhere with my teammates now in a situation where when practices done bunch of my teammates are grown adults with families. The problem is your calculated risk could impact that thirty-three-year-old that's also on your team did a much different life point.

"Are we letting them make mistakes enough. Because they need those those moments to really grow and develop into becoming having core values of perseverance and work ethic and what it takes to be successful and sometimes i think we miss miss the mark on that. I mean the only way you grow. Resilience is by failing. We want everybody to be resilient but we don't want them to hurt. I want to be resilient. But i don't wanna hurt. Oh it's a catch twenty two because it's it's hot nothing worse than watching your kid hurt. That's really that's tough but sometimes it's required but that's it. I appreciate you having me. And we will try our best number four in charlotte. Where where are you going to have a conversation afterwards. If this doesn't go well herbs call you for a congratulations or tall. Let me ask you our final question. We always ask everybody because the show is called. That sounds fine. Tell me what sounds fun to you. Anytime i go on my one vice for a guy that didn't grow up with money and now has a little bit of money. My is vacationing with my family. Yeah are we. My most fun is snow skiing. Whether it's deer valley or telluride or beaver creek. I love to be out in the mountains. I love to be whether it's the summer or the winter. I can see me when i you know maybe my next chapter life being somewhere out there because i just there's something about being out west i just love. So that's that sounds fun to me. Y'all can't leave nashville yet. We just got. Julio jones just turned right for us ads. It's you gotta stick around long enough to see what. Julio does for our pastor a couple of weeks ago saying thanks to god for this thanks god for this and he said and thanks to julio for governor like you cannot say that given queen is gonna change you dogs in the titans. You got a chance to have a fun year. I'm a falcons girl at heart. But i'm working on trying. Be a titans girl.

"Camera i mid i when she left it was a given you know in her role that she was going to go on to bigger and better things but yeah she was. She was like it's funny. You say big rush to me. She was like a little sister. She reminded me a character. Denzel washington remember tiny titans. The daughter yeah that sampon exactly right really what are we doing. Why are we going on. She did all and she knows what's going on. She's not faking it all she's all. Here's the other person. I'd love free to talk about what you talk about. Coach rick because our crowd just hurt him. He just came on the show. We talk about what you've seen in him as a coach i just you know how can you not love him. I knew him is an offense coordinator. When i was in the business. Share lord of state and watch them. When i first came into to national. Tv on game. day florida state was alabama. Bobby bowden rolling every year. You know they're ninety six ninety seven ninety eight ninety nine. They either were in the national championship. Winning it or they were just you know losing in the championship so they were an elite program and he was the offense coordinator and just from day. One another guy that has strong faith. I don't know i. I just always really enjoyed my time. Being around him and his his his personality you know he was always very encouraging to me. Even when i was really young and then he became the georgia head coach and obviously had a great run in athens and then he went to miami. And i've just always loved being around him love listening to him. Talk football David pollack buddy and a former talks about. He's like man he's like you know you don't realize coach. Fritz got a competitive signed him. Play racket ball or whatever like he you know he seems like an. Aw shucks kind of guys like man. You don't wanna get sideways with him. And i was like wow really. I think i'd never seen that side of him. I'm glad to hear obviously with all the success. He's had he has to have that kind of competitive spirit. But a couple of weeks ago and bobby bowden passed. I went down to tallahassee for the for the ceremony. Not for hit a two or three ceremonies but on saturday was more of a celebration and i just went down to pay my respects because i was so fond of him and the the speakers that day were charlie ward who wanna heisman. Form worked on who was a superstar. Oh yeah i remember him. From falcons days love and derrick brooks who was a hall fat layer and hear them all speak. None of them talked about football all talked about how he was there for them. As a father figure coach bowden and how he brought them all to god and and and then Mark got up to speak and you know he. He was so impressive. And you know he's speaking so softly on the edge of your seat listening to every word that he said he told some credible stories about how he he was kinda lost. He was caught up in the coaching profession. And and he said being around. Bobby bowden and watching how he acted every day. He's like whatever he has. I want that you know. And he he said he walked into his office one day. he's like i need christ. I'm just. I'm fallen and broken. And i i i need what you're talking about. And he said bobby bowden literally brought him to that relationship and changed his life from that day. He walked in and knocked on his door as an assistant coach. He's changed his life from that day. Moving forward and he was very emotional. Talking about bobby bowden and how. He impacted him and such a positive way but mark ricks one of the alzheimer's great man. I feel like not to make weird but between you and him. I feel like this fall. I'm kinda getting my mount rushmore college football on the podcast dass for i feel like i've done and is there anything we didn't say about the book you want to make sure we say no no like i said i think you touched on all of it. It was just it's more. It's not just a football book or abroad story about broadcasting. It's really more about people who go through some tough times life and and just how you evolve in learn to kind of get knocked down and get back up. I i really feel as parents sometimes. We're guilty myself included with four boys of of being a snowplow parent meeting. You're trying to prevent your kids from going through failures trying to prevent your kids from having that bad teacher and third grade. It's not your kids fault. This bad teacher we gotta get him out of there and get them over this teacher or he's on a team where he's not playing as much as you'd hope so we're gonna get him off of that team. Go get him on that team. I just feel like is hard as it is and it's been hard for me to watch our kids fail. They need to fail. You know they need to go through tough times and It's hard today social media the there's these apps and kids can pull it up and snapchat and they can see. Oh gosh ten of my friends are over at my friend's house night. I didn't get invited. Now that's messed they'll happens to me incurred only it'd be like oh man. Yeah but when you're nine painful and so these parents proactively trying to not let kids be left out in my point is i just. It's okay to let them fail. It's okay to to to let them not come through the way you would hope to. They hope to have a conversation about it again. I'm not acting like i have all the answers at all. I'm just saying for a guy that failed a lot went through a lot. I look back at those failures. I look back at those. Those tough times and i've gratitude and i'm thankful that i went through those times and i worry about art kids mine included. Are we letting them fall down enough..

"If they're if they're good you know with the academic side of it. They'll go over to south bend and do their academic share if you go to high school football game in ohio on a friday night. There's a real sense of community you know with high school football. It's a huge deal. You big crowds. Will you go to notre dame it feels like a high school football game because grandma and grandpa are here and mom and dad are here. And they all probably either went to notre dame or they've been lifelong notre dame fans. Now it's my turn to go to notre dame like it's just such a family atmosphere and then they love their team like you said there's a lot of traditions that are really cool and that's just one example you all over the country and you see you see these different Ways that people celebrate this sport and have fun with. What did you learn about humanity after twenty twenty when football continued on and we still like what. How was last year inspiring to you or interesting to you. Watching football happened during two thousand twenty was heroic. I was out there on the road every week. I felt the same stuff that to a lesser degree. I had to perform only in a broadcast booth and call the game in front of many times empty stadiums which is very bizarre situation. When you're used to you know eighty thousand eight hundred thousand people going crazy and just nothing. There's very very small crowds. If any at all and to be a player. And i don't know fans understood the during the the kobe football season last year these players often to avoid contact tracing avoid catching the virus. They would stay. They would stay in their apartment a lot of times in their own apartment they would go to the football facility. They would be isolated for the most part at the facility. Because you don't want to get. Somebody tested positive. You don't wanna get dinged for contact. Tracing they would practice then they would come back and their apartment and got to the point where we got through the season somehow. Miraculously i was prepared for the ohio state alabama national championship which is in early. January starts august so august september. October november december. Five months and i was talking to the ohio. State captain me and chris fowler. We were getting ready for the call. And we're on a zoom like you an ion and he spent a lot of time with this player because every time we do in ohio state game. He's the guy that one of the guys we talk to and his name was josh meyers. And he took his phone about halfway through. And he's like. I'm just ready for this game to be over. I wanna win my last game. But he's like he pulled as phony kinda went around. It was just four white walls and he goes. I'm just tired of being in this room is that i want to see my family. I want to just go hug my mom and dad and i was just like wow that was so powerful for him to just he and his it feels like he's been in isolation you know for those five months so it took much more toll on players playing college football and coaches. I think your average person probably would would imagine. Yeah it was and there. I mean the upheaval racially last year. I mean listen. I need to tell you for into friend that moment of you on tv after that long segment where you kind of express your emotions around what had been going on. Was i mean. I'm sure you know this but like people texted each other about that. Everybody said did you just see kirk herbstreit. And what he said and and it just mattered a lot so i wanted you to know that conversation at a time. I appreciate that you know. It's one of those things when you don't even. I'm not talented enough. Sound like a vocal ten percenters out there on social media or like you know just coming out. And i'm like whoa. Why are like that's where we are. Though right. i mean. I was just expressing empathy. Yes i was just expressing. We gotta do better right. Let let let's. Let's be kind to each other. Yeah no matter no matter what you know and and it's amazing. How volatile there. There's you know some people are right now and we've never been more divided as a country in my lifetime. I can't remember there might be certain issues that. Divide people. But i'm talking about you turn on the tv. I never really watched the news and of course during the global pandemic yet to tune into the news. It was almost like we lived in different countries. Like you watch cnn. And it's like whoa. You turn over to fox. Whoa and i grew up with water. Conkrite and peter jennings. And i'm like where's the person with the just tells you nuke if you by the way you know who that person is can you do. I just cannot find without strong. Opinions are smart aleck. Takes like how about. Just let me know what's going on and be in the middle instead of like way over here way over there and all that's doing is continuing to divide the country so i didn't think i was going to do what i did. I as a white male. With that time i thought the best thing is to be quiet and just observe and listen and just maybe offer support if he can. But i just didn't feel it gives my time to talk. And then when. I watched that feature and i watched maria taylor who was involved at interviewing these guys. I talked with david shaw. Who's an african american head coach at stanford today before and told them about our segment. And he's like you know. Don't don't be afraid to be braid. You know you gotta you gotta you gotta perch here in college football and don't don't be afraid to use your voice and i was like i just don't know still know if that's the right thing to do and i. When i started my comment i was just going to play it safe. And then i read a quote which he gave me and then i would just like. Oh no i could feel my motion bubbling. I was like oh no here. I go and i just i just said whatever i said for my heart and i. I never thought i'd be on. Tv being emotional like that. But i think it just kind of speaks volumes for where we were at that time you know in society and just not just sport but the country you know just just hate to see us so divided terrible. How sports helped bring communities together. Where do you see. Where do you see plugging into sports yourself into sports. Kind of helping you understand. Other families and other races other socioeconomic classes. How does sports help with that. I think it helps. Because we don't see.

"Drive for us. It is not neutral and so so y'all right clips in georgia. Oh yeah you. I'm calling that game. That now has georgia. Have we ever done georgia when george is on the road and they went on a game day now me sec championship when we did it. Land my gosh. My spring feeling jinx. Now this is unbelievable. Unfortunately this is what i needed to tell you that takes discouraged about you being it clips and georgia. I feel a lot of pressure now. Going to charlotte. We need to break the jinx. Going to be the new thing. Georgia clemson is this neutral. Resists the start of the season neutral. Yeah i think it's just you know these neutral site games that you were a kid when i was younger. I mean georgia and clemson. They're so close to one. Another people don't realize that that aren't maybe in that region but that is that is a great old rivalry. He used to play all the time and gotten away from it. So i for those fans of those two teams as you know that this will be a fun game but yeah. I don't think it's going to be an every every year type of little anti story for you. I got the worst sunburn of my life at death valley because i sat up way high and sunburn my face worse than that place because it's those early august september games and their brood. Holy i called i. If you're talking about the game. Todd gurley yes. I called that game to. I don't remember the clemson probably one that one too actually. Yeah i'm i'm curious to know the times we've done game day when clemson when georgia's been on like not at a neutral site the would have they ever won on game day ever. Have we ever done georgia game when they won. I don't think you said. I don't go that deep. I just i just googled it twice and so i give you everything i learned twice. Okay i'll make us. I remember the year. Though i'm to i'm going to have our guy research ever if they've ever one right we've done a game day. 'cause i feel i feel like our show is responsible for this now nervous about this game now. I feel like i've got a duty to try to break this jokes. Thank you. I need you to carry this weight with me because i've been feeling it for twenty four hours thinking about talking to you. How you feel about georgia for this year. I mean how can you not like him. Kirby is crazy to think. Kirby's in his sixth year now wild it cannot believe. It's been that long. I know. I know every year there. There's there's alabama clemson there's ohio state and then i would say there's georgia and oklahoma. It's like those teams seem to through recruiting kind of elevated themselves over everybody else and what's remarkable. This is when you know you have a great program. George look with georgia has lost over the last year especially on the defensive side of the ball. They lost almost their whole secondary loss. Great linebacker play and here they are expected to have one of the best. Defense is in the sec. And you know. They've had some injuries out at wide receiver. George pickens you got a quarterback j. jt daniels who looks to be the part. Looks like he finished last year. Very very well and excited to see him hopefully healthy all year and see what he can do got great running backs the way they recruit so i mean there's everything seems to be in place on paper night has got to go out and you know it. Is you gotta gel together and go through some adversity and hope they come through it and what better way than to play clemson. There's a lot at stake because the loser of this game. Chances are georgia. Clemson are going to have great year. Went out yeah. The last thing you wanna do is lose this game and then get into a tie-breaker situation where it's an either or one of these teams is going to advance into the playoffs. And one of them's not and whoever wins the head to head. Matchup is obviously going to get the nod. So i don't wanna say it's a dealbreaker to lose this game but you wanna win this one. I gotta ask you to not go. Please give reassigned. I can't pay you pay you to be there. But i can ask the people i can ask around fancier georgia fans uncalled lady a and get them to invest in you not being there that whatever it takes because i was born in nineteen eighty so we i in my life. There has not been a national championship for georgia. And it is it is. It's painful how about how about the national championship. A couple years ago. You guys were close. I mean dominating dominating the game and and then to becomes too on on a national stage in china. Yeah that was quite quite and even when he came in there. I mean georgia's still had their chances. They're late in the game to win it so okay. Do you know a place outside of nashville called onsite. Onsite the counseling center. No i feel like i've heard of that. Mutual friends have all. Because i'm in national too so a bunch of mutual friends have all been so. I was there for a week. Long like counseling intensive for that week the week. That georgia was in the national championship. And they let us watch it that night. And you know it's probably good. I'm in therapy. this late. Chance to go to the watched it at good place leaving the next morning i was like i've got some new stuff to talk about in our small. 'cause you watch that's about as close as you can come to climb that mountain and then slide down. They were right there. I called the the rosebowl there. you go buy golden. I called the georgia. Oklahoma game We earlier that was that looked like oklahoma baker mayfield. We're going to kind of have their way young. Jake frahm sunday michelle job. That was a great game. One of my favorite games. That maybe i've ever called that was tremendous. And that's a win for you. So let's do that again. Let's do that again. And clemson games for it. We're going gonna be all right when you look at across the sec. I mean we're gonna talk about your book by the way but this is so for me to talk sports when you look across the sec. With texas and oklahoma coming do you predict. Let me tell you what i predict and you tell me why i'm wrong. I think they'll come in a couple of days. They come in and twenty three i. It's debatable at this point. Let's just say twenty three. So if they come in and twenty three are you. Are you predicting an east-west split by twenty-six eastwest to sec's we're going to have to split at some point. It's going to be too big right. I don't know i. I feel like i feel like the. Those are the first two big domino's to fall in college. Football notre dame is still out there right. what's left of the big twelve. You know there's some pretty good brands that are left. They're wondering a we still a big twelve texas tech and tcu.

"Let's talk about it. I think awesome. I think i think so. Many people are going to love it. Oh good okay. We're starting with the georgia conversation. Though kirk talk to me about why every time you bring game day to georgia game we lose home. My gosh so true. It's never remember when one time they they did a blackout and they were like black jerseys or something like that and got killed alabama man i. I have to have the bear. Look that up to see what george record is. When we come to athens. I loved the town. Don't worry i already did the research for you. And we are ed when you come to town or when you're at the sec championship were yes. Yes i looked it up last night. Because i was at the game. The first time you came. I was at the game october. Th one thousand nine hundred eight was a freshman at georgia. We're playing tennessee. And i remember when they announced game day was coming to athens. Wow that's crazy. it was. It was huge. It was like it was all anyone talked about that way. Because i think tennessee was we were both top ten at the time and then they destroyed us. Oh my gosh. I remember that champ. Bailey was on that teac. Yeah that was tennessee's Run to a national championship. Ask jim donovan was the head coach. I remember that well we. We were in the end zone. If you're looking from the home side we're in the end zone to the left for game day. It's very different now You know they have big. They have stands now to hold different. It's like a whole different stadium but back then that stayed outside. The stadium was opened her game. Day right there. But i didn't realize that you guys are over. You know we one week. One will be in charlotte. It's a neutral site. Does that count. that's neutral. That's like colin jacksonville neutral. No world where jacksonville is neutral for georgia. Florida like a nineteen minute. Drive for them in a five hour drive for us. It is not neutral and so so y'all right clips in georgia. Oh yeah you. I'm.

"Murder hornets. So these things popped up in early twenty twenty and we kind of forgot about him because of cova and forgot about them. I've been tyler. I've remained vigilant. Well unfortunately they're back The i asked was in washington. So that's good news. But i'm sure billy's on the lookout for more.

"Go checkout. Watch football dave and buster's this year big screen. Tv's games menu. Everything dave and buster's dnp's ding ding ding. Today is monday august thirtieth. And i don't know if you guys heard this one before but football is back. Footfall is back. Also congratulations to the baltimore ravens set. They broke vince. Lombardi's record twenty zero in preseason football the greatest streak perhaps in all of sports simply. Incredible simply incredible. So i'm in cleveland. Right now. we're taping this afternoon. Because i'm i'm going to be part of the jake paul Circus tonight but We are gonna talk some football. We have kirk herbstreit on in a second. We have mount rushmore. We should talk though so the baltimore ravens a good story they they are the preseason champs. We should talk real quick though about scott frost in nebraska because the first meaningful football game was played the first meaningful football game points were a safety when a guy feel that upon at the one yard line and tried to throw it out of the end zone because a ruse they were attempting a ruse. Nebraska is a complete and utter dumpster fire. I don't know what you do. They i don't know if you saw the graphics they were throwing up there but Scott frost is now nine in eighteen in big ten football games. Zero bowl games. He has the second worst record of any head coach in nebraska history. And it's a complete failure. And i feel bad for nebraska fans. I'm sure they're probably like the fact that they had that type of failure as the standalone game in week. Zero has to hurt because otherwise you would have just like passed over in illinois nebraska game. No that was. Everyone was watching that game. That game ruled because it was big ten through and through bret bielema just grinding up. Scott frost though total disaster. It's tough. it's tough when they put the graphic up and it was scott frost and then a guy who looked like he was in one thousand nine one baseball pitcher with the black and white pitcher next and then another guy. The other guys profile picture was just a cartoon because they didn't have cameras invented when that guy was coaching but he is like it's the worst starts any nebraska coach. Maybe of all time. And it's it's not great because they thought that this guy was gonna be the savior. He was coming off national championship at. Ucf he was like the prodigal son returning this is the next guy that's going to save nebraska football and then he comes in implements a system that is decidedly not nebraska in how they run seriously. If you're the next bresca coach just by all the steroids. Just get all the steroids. If you get on i guarantee you that corn husker fans will not give shit if you get caught running the dirty strength and conditioning program in the history of college sports. Besides what's that movie unnecessary roughness. You need that you need. The program are in syria. Both of them had the program. But like you need the dirty strength and conditioning coach of all time just cheat just cheap because it would be less embarrassing if you're nebraska to get caught cheating then it is running whatever you have been running for the the last ten years yes and credited reputable because i actually think he's going to be a good coach illinois and he plays bret bielema ball that that drive to start the second half where he was like. I'm going to run the ball down your throat. For seventy five yards was vintage bill. But it's this is like the winner. Yesterday was actually sneaky. Jim harbaugh because the prodigal son going home and having it being a failure now is like the the big one is now scott frost because jim harbaugh at least got michigan to like within an inch of going to the big ten championship game in college. Football playoff like scott frost. They haven't even sniffed it and his year four and would actually say the like. It's not even the offense he's running. It's just the fact that he keeps trotting out adrian martinez who i've never seen a guy have an ability to fumble the ball at inopportune times more than this guy like he just like. Oh this would be. This specific moment would be a soul crusher. Okay now i'm gonna fumble do some fumble six at the end of the half. Yeah if you're martinez and yes. It is a different martinez ever. No one understands that. But they have had a quarterback name martinez for feels like fifteen years in a row. But because taylor march that was in the early two thousand eleven to fourteen ish yes and now so anytime you get out dude by a sitkovsky. It's going to be an issue and and credits shut up. Shut up rutgers. Transfer those half a win for rutgers to yeah exactly so so he looked. He looked good in comparison. But it was mostly like. Is there a coach that you would less rather play in opening day in weeks. Zero then bielema. I don't think that there is because overall save in over the course of a season. Now i would rather play saving because everyone expects you to lose and get crushed by saving but bielema like that's when he's at his freshest you get a few weeks of actual football and under his belt his considerable belt and you're going to be facing guy that's like a little orange down a little grind. I mean he's a lotta men big cat. he's lost some weight though. We gotta give him credit. He's lost thirty or forty pounds so he he does look. Look when you get very big losing thirty or forty pounds. You're still big but you gotta give credit. We're we're trying to get everyone. You know healthy twenty one. That's how you know how big is because he's like i lost either thirty or forty pounds. He's not sure. Yeah somewhere around there. Well i think that. I think when you're that big the ten pound difference is really just the last meal you had it can fluctuate just from that. Yeah have you shit today yet. Well then i'm more like thirty pounds less than i was. Yes so but yeah it was. I don't know what to do. I actually now feel bad for nebraska fans because it was it was kind of fun to joke about. But now it's like where do you go from here. Maybe really sad they have I think it's a twenty million dollar buyout for scott frost like in all likelihood. Scott frost is probably going to be there for another year..

"It's probably a take a couple years of of stories but i also don't think it's his big is everybody's making it out debate. I don't think you know right now. You look at bryce young alabama people talk about a billion dollars but what how many stories truly are there like that where they're going to be making that kind of money so just right now. I'm kind of paying attention. Listening watching what. I don't wanna make too much out of it but at the same time i think it's it's a step in the right direction and college athletics. You know right now. It's like a stew nami right now. The way it's all changing with texas and oklahoma transfer portal name Lightness we're going to be at a different space in two to three years and so right now we're all just kind of hold on to see where this thing lands and a few years. What are you imagine an eighteen year. Old kirk herbstreit playing quarterback at ohio state would have endorsed. What do you imagine. Like a man. I would have probably looking for free. Pizza does always simple. And i was. I was a simple guy. Not not a guy that was looking to kinda to max out. Whatever i could i was i was. I was content. And i think the one thing about these because both my kids are preferred walk on. So i'm writing checks One thing i feel like gets a little bit misconstrued. Sometimes as what these players get there on. Scholarship not only a scholarship cost of attendance. Many of them qualify for pell grant. I just hate that sometimes. They're portrayed as if they're they're looking around you know out of the streets for. Oh here's here's here's a box of thrown away pizza. Maybe i can eat some of that. I mean it's not that way at all. These guys are doing fine. The name image and lightness will definitely help. But i can't wait to see how really how much it impacts these players other than the brightest young or you know. Ohio states quarterback put people like that I don't i just don't think it's going to be as big a deal as people kind of reacting to you You join college game day. Ninety six right now. And i'm wondering i love the show so much i've i've had a reese on the show and i've had fully on the show and i have a question about the leak in a second but i am wondering. When did you know okay. Was there a moment where you said to yourself man. This is different. This is special. Because i think it's you in the tnt guys for the nba and like everyone else is fighting for third and it's a distant third. You guys just do it the right way which is a tribute to leafing but also attribute to all you guys. Did you know herbie that. This was something different. Something special will i the show. That's today there's a lot of moving parts you know. When i first started it was it. Was chris fowler and it was lee corso and it was me and that was the show and we want our in our three hours. And there's a lot of you know a lot of reporters and we does. We have david coach. We have reese now. But chris fowler probably deserves as much credit as leafing because he he took game is almost like his baby and he he protected it and he. He fought for it Those early early years in his editorial instincts. Our incredible and so. I would give chris a lot of credit for its growth and taking the show to where it went. I'll get mark shapiro. Who is one of our executives. Years ago a lot of credit the reason i give mark a lot of credit is people. Don't remember this. But when when game day when i started to go on the road it would a lot of times go to an abc game or espn game and then mark shapiro. Came along and he said well. Why are we going to the gate the notre dame game and he got his the people that would report. The him said well. It's an nbc game. he goes. I don't give a shit. I don't care. He goes no college game. Day is the show record. We go wherever the big game is. Go to the ghetto care. What station on. That's where we're going and was like really. We're allowed to do that. He's like hell. Yeah we're doing that so that was years ago so we started to go to whether nbc or cbs. Or whoever the game we would come in and be there. And i think fans all these different regions started. Look at us and say wow. They're they're they don't care they're going all over the place and that's what i think it really started to get. Traction coaches started to embrace the show and try to like sell on. Hey you guys need to come to our campus and they wanted the almost validate the game of the week kind of thing and we start having coaches and it's really neat. That's that's what i think. It started kind of changing the amount of people that were coming to. The show used to be a couple of hundred. And now i mean depending on where we go you can have thousands and thousands of people for a night game that come just for college game day because they wanna be on and they want to show america how big of a fan base they have and how much they love their team. The regardless of the weather They'll spend the night the night they'll they'll they'll camp out around the set and so that's when you start to look at this like this things different you know and that was probably around two thousand two thousand and one is when it's still started kind of really go to a different place. The thing i love the most about the show was your relationship with with lee corso And it seems like a father son type relationship just kirk. You're so caring for up there and you could see whether it's just putting a hand on his arm or whatever it is You could tell how close you guys. Could you just talk about that relationship you have with league because it's it's phenomenal to watch. I hit on that a lot in the book i take. Espn dot com. Put something up about that. But yeah i mean it's it's much more than just somebody you work with you. You've worked with people who you work with them and you kind of see him the next time he worked the other and that's really about it also work with people. I'm guessing like damn where you get to know their families they get to know your family's becomes a different game when when that's going on and when you're with the person for this many years that's that's kind of a case where our relationship changes we'd be in la or new york in the off season at a photo shoot or commercial. And i'd be a first time dad. You know with previous sons. And during the nick you and i'm terrified. I don't know what's going on..

College Football Commentator Kirk Herbstreit Discusses His Scary Introduction to Fatherhood

"About how old were you then. Save me back to the beginning here. About how old were you when you first became a dad and had to becoming a father kind of change your perspective on life. Well i dated a girl through high school and college. Same girl for eight years and then she went off to chicago to start her career she had done for years. I- red-shirted and so. I had a fifth year my senior year and during my senior year i met my future wife alison That year and then we got married. When i was i was about twenty eight years old Roughly and my first kids were born in two thousand. So i was twenty nine thirty years old. Roughly right around there when they were when they were born. Incidentally they were born I talked about this in the book but but my wife was twenty weeks pregnant than we would end for our normal routine. We knew we were expecting twins and we were going in for our normal scan and when we went in they said oh my gosh you know you're funneling we've got a problem you've got we got mitch you to the hospital. So she went straight up from that. Visit straight up the hospital to up up to the twelfth floor. And she stayed there On bedrest and held on for like to see if she could she could make it Did not get out of that bed for. She held on for eight weeks. And so the Twins were born at twenty eight weeks. There are two pounds each when they were born and then they were in the nick. You for about another eight weeks until they're able to come home. And so that was my introduction to to fatherhood and You know now. They're twenty one and and doing well. But tell you when you're a first time dad and that's your introduction That was that was scary. You know they're in the nick you and you know i didn't realize that your brain when it's develops tells your heart to beat and so their brains weren't developed enough so they're the ekg wiring all on couple times with flat. Line on your thinking. They've died and you freak out until nerves to come over they'd come over and just kind of shake their leg and then the next thing they'd start breathing again but it was a traumatic experience to go

"As well is all of us would have liked to sand. It was the right call to make I know a lot of folks even today call for them to go to the big twelve. Are the The Times time, but I you know I'm I'm optimistic that if if are and will be patient and it's hard to be patient with what they've had endure. Sorts of crazy things have happened but if we can say patients coach Pittman. Eventually. We'll be competitive again like we have been through the years with not with between as you pointed out. So we'll wait and see I I enjoy your show. Thank you thank you very much for the call Dave Mike is next in Kentucky Hey Mike. Hi Good, afternoon Paul. This is a strange football year bro. Normally I'm on fire making everybody is mad as I can get them. This year I don't know. Just remember one thing. I mean. We still have two and a half weeks to go and I think that's part of the problem we're watching football every every weekend now and I mean there's a reason why we're we're going last and it's probably a smart is a smart decision but but it is a little bit tough to sit here and try to you know get go all in when when we still haven't seen a game yet. Yeah I just hope covert nineteen doesn't determine the national champion force I mean it's you just got a feeling in the back of your mind right now that at some point in the season. When to critical you know critical matchup for a conference or Division Championship. And here comes a false. Positive yeah. I mean there's going to be a lot of experimentation here and I think. It is the most unusual season ever but everything that I everything that we're going through collectively. Is Different than it's ever been. So it shouldn't be a surprise that the season he's going to be odd. If GONNA be ought to say the least it's really hard to get excited for it even though I think Obama's. Pretty much got the best roster and the country. Is as the big ten decided to get back in this or are they still? No. I think they formed a committee to talk about it. Hope so because Ohio state has got a super talented roster and it's just I mean that deal legit de-legitimize of it right there them not being in it. You know. I mean I hope they get their act together. I. Mean let them roll all man. Have a good day. Thank you. Again I I understand what he's saying but I think most fans that I know are pretty excited about seeing college football I. Think they'll get more excited. By this time next week we'll see a weekend of the. NFL. We've seen. A partial entry. Thursday night when when Miami plays, that's the first power five teams to play. So even though we've seen football over these last two weekends I mean it's not the same standard that a lot of fans are are looking forward to anyway. Thanks for the call. Let's continue and lake is up next. Hey, good afternoon. Lake you there. Go right ahead you're on the air. On. You questions about the. Alabama season how you think it's going to be go. MILWAK-. Alabama liked the last caller is is set up for a great season everyone that I know that has seen them practice. and. Understand the inner workings of that program thinks this could be one of the better Alabama teams in a long time I mean it's literally across the board starting September twenty six. Missouri. AM. At Ole. Miss Georgia. Tennessee Yeah it's. I think it's a manageable schedule. Toughest Games are probably Georgia. And Lsu at Tennessee, could be tricky am. More difficult in the past and obviously Auburn Auburn at the end we are heading to a break. We have much more to do on this labor. Day night including we hope we're hoping to catch up with Kirk herbstreit here in just a moment he is live in Annapolis where Byu and navy play this afternoon.

How Tua Tagovailoa changed Alabama football forever

"On Saturday. Near the end of the first half and a game against unranked Mississippi State Alabama Alabama quarterback Tua Tunga Vilo was severely injured. It was later reported. He dislocated his hip and suffered a posterior wall fracture. He's having surgery today and will miss the remainder of the college football season. If not longer. Now it's upsetting to see any athlete at any level. Suffer an injury like that but when it happens to to a player like to a it's especially difficult to watch because we know what's at stake when I saw the visual of him being carted off the field. I was reminded of the night. We saw Diane Brian. Williamson's sprain his knee in college. Like Zion tool was a lock for a top draft pick which should have given him the chance to earn millions of dollars in the near future and likes I on his injury will invite a good deal of scrutiny. Because it puts that future jeopardy in fact seconds after to a left the game people began to ask. Why was the quarterback just a few weeks removed from ankle surgery? Even on the field team was up. Thirty five to seven are Chris. Fowler Kirk Herbstreit. Had this to say article was that tried to send the guy out there to beat. Mississippi state at the risk of his career. Career has sought what they're saying that. I do think that you're with US affected. Your opponent has no chance to stop. Maybe it's a prudent thing into sit about. Maybe it's a thing to pull them out and it's not that it's more for me. Why was he on the field at the beginning of the game? And you give tails recovering from Alabama coach. Nick Sabin later said it was meant to be too as last series he also said to a wanted to go into the game and look. That's not surprising. Anyone who's watched to over the last two years knows he is a fierce competitor. And one of the the toughest quarterbacks to ever play college football but even if he didn't want to go back into this game or any game this season that wouldn't have made him any less tough because when college players Games on account of injury or as we've seen happen more and more often preempt them altogether to avoid getting hurt before the graft it's not because they don't WanNa play football it's because every time they step onto the field before they get paid they risked the opportunity. Turn a living off the sport for

"Reacted and then I gathered myself and there was one time where I was talking about something and then it went to somebody else came back to me and I go. I started to talk again. I no no no no no can't do it can't do it yeah talk Susie and Mike Tirico try to help you out a little bit they were sitting on either side and they put like a little comforting arm on your data ever try to comfort you a little bit while he's getting that choked up and then I asked Paulie to stay because I just thought you know what somebody outside side of this looking at it because polly didn't work on sportscenter but when he was there at ESPN so to have him kind of look at it and say hey what about this or he it was just another set of eyes and ears in was really a welcomed addition at the very end police. You guys you get ready to say something like at its announcement and then you fade the black like the sopranos and everybody went awesome because I said let's get don't stop believing by journey and play that too and we actually tried to do do that but we were we wanted it to fade to black and then just come up and say this is sportscenter and not everybody got it but that's okay but you know that was pauly's suggestion there that when you guys just do that and it was a nice. It was a Nice Day Nice night yeah point. The two things that really stuck out to me was after the town hall. I think maybe three thirty nine to noon. It's beautiful sunny. Dan Campus Sixty seven degrees. ESPN campuses gorgeous. It's built up so much we're standing behind behind the tent and it's me you the Danettes here comes Kennedy Maine and there's Mike to Rico boomer and then here comes Kevin the Gandhi and all these different anchors are walking up and and then a bunch of employees like producer types of walking up to you now have gray hair now but you still recognize faces and they're coming up and hugging you like high school reunion field behind the tent and then Jimmy Protrero the president is ESPN's just hanging Chit Chat with all the people and and the PR people are standing there and people were just lined up to come and give you a hug new good to see and you're like Oh my God God that was really cool because it felt like natural not forced in any way and then the other highlight for me like you said I never worked on sportscenter and never got to work with you and Keith to see you and when Keith get back into your roles within five seconds of walking in that room we're in Scott van pelt production room. He's got this big room. He's got some great producers Stanford Steve. Is there there and you in case that next to each other and I sat behind you purposely to stay out of the way but also to eavesdrop basically and you and Keith are just kinda jabbing each other Jabeen Ebon the highlights a key psycho the cardinals shocker they want you know and then you're like well and and you went right back into routine like those twenty two years got compressed into nothing and this is fascinating you guys are running the room casually and it was really cool for me to see how you and Keith play off each other totally different personalities totally different styles and then when you guys you guys kept poking and laughing and poking and laughing and I had to take pictures of it 'cause it was so cool yeah. It was natural but that's what they said well. How do we set it up so it's like it was for you and Keith and I said we re we didn't talk that much during the night writing sportscenter but but then we go put on makeup on in the bathroom and then we would catch up for like ten minutes and then we'd go do the show because we never wanted to show our cards he was going to try to entertain me was going to try to entertain him because there's no studio audience? You just have camera people there. Those are the people trying to make laugh and it was it. It was fun that way to be able to do that but some great people up there I miss him but it'll be from afar amish you yes it is crazy how watching you guys do the the eleven o'clock sportscenter and hearing it like Paul said it immediately took you right back and it was kind of like like Oh yeah. That's what this is supposed to sound like. This is exactly what it was supposed to be. It's what we all remember and even like I'm sitting there with my wife and I were both smiling ear to ear for ninety minutes because they're like this. This is what is this is what it's supposed to be it was it was really great. Yeah and I appreciate the opportunity and I didn't know I needed it as much as I did until I it was I was riding home and I didn't have the music on it was just quiet in it's never quiet because I used to leave. ESPN and I would recall pauly's machine at at work and I would leave a message for him and it would be two minutes of me talking up to the vocals on a song like just to kill time time is fifty five minutes for me to drive home and I had no sound on on the radio at all I just drove home thinking and letting it sink in home and I'm not supposed to drink beer I got home and had a beer and and I was in the basement by myself the TV's not on. I just sat there and I went wow. I don't know what just happen. Glad it did and we move on. We move on your apple. One of the highlights was also van Pelt was pretty giddy because you know he was the big conduit of this. He's got this great late night. Show he goes. Let's go upstairs. Let's go upstairs when you and Keith Fergus. I got onset around nine thirty PM on Friday night to take a little piece and he goes. Let's go upstairs and take a picture behind him use. I'm going to walk up and I'm going to give point wait for the back of their heads. Because you get a picture then we run out on my Scottish. You're set you don't sneak around and so van pelt gets behind you. You didn't even know he was there and he gives us look like look who's here and he posted it. He said GonNa be a big show tonight and he tweeted that out like at ten o'clock and the reaction was like this is happening. This is cool and it was really cool to see how just blossom naturally by the way I recruited Van Pelt to come. ESPN like I was I wanted to create a dynasty there. I wanted the best talent there. I didn't care if if they were in competition I wanted van pelt to leave the golf channel. I was begging him. I said you are so much better than what you're doing at the golf channel and then he finally relinquished and came up there and and he's a really talented guy. Let me just the the the one big thing that he did at the end of the show. It's it's really good and that shouldn't get lost in. You know what we did or who we are. What we meant to sports center? There are a lot of talented people there but van peasy is really good at what he does on that show really is and I just WanNa thank him for his generosity because he needed to be all in for this to to work all right when we come back more phone calls best and worst of the weekend we will also talk to Kirk herbstreit curious about what if Michigan lost that game the army does. Can we find out what the spread is because didn't Nick Sabin get upset with the fans left here is this is a long back and forth with Nick Sabin. Can I play this now. Okay so Alabama roughed up. Who did they rough up? mcneese state or somebody New Mexico New Mexico New Mexico state they roughed up here is the Alabama head coach on the strength of schedule for Alabama you think this kind of level of competition can get you ready for an SEC game a week later well look. I've talked about this this before I so we try to schedule the best teams that we can schedule and we're trying to do that in the future as well but we we have to we can only play the people who are willing to play us. I I've said my opinion about playing twelve world power five schools. That's what I would rather do so but a lot of people don't agree with that. I'd rather play Tennessee Games and then play to other power power five schools so all the Games are exciting for the fans. All the Games are good football. You wouldn't have to go undefeated to get in the playoffs because you play a more quality schedule Joe. I've been through and covered that ground a hundred times so do I think we can get bettering games like this I do if you approach the the game right and you practice the right way and you prepare and you have the right focus and you play to your standard. You can get better playing anybody. Would I rather play other teams. No disrespect a New Mexico state. Their coach works hard their players played hard but if it's my philosophy that we should play twelve power five absolutely I'd say the answer to that would be yes but that's a philosophical answer and that's not the way it is I so I I don't know why you would ask me that question as is if I could do something about it when I can't do anything about it so we're playing the best teams that we can get the place. Why don't you start call around and see if you can get somebody else to play us and we'll play? We'll play anybody you can get to play him once you get the tap on the podium then you know you're you're in trouble. You can hear the tap here now. WHO's get when do they schedule? New Mexico state probably probably three years.

Predictions for the Iron Bowl - Alabama vs Auburn

"Look at a couple of other games. This may not take long the iron bowl Alabama certainly with Georgia next week. What does auburn's path victory? Well, I I guess the only thing I can think of is I've looked at some things this week early in the week is I'm falling in love with his Alabama defense. And I think what tasha poi- has done with a brand new secondary. And losing so many great leaders from a year ago. They have come a long way from Louisville to where they are getting ready for the iron bowl, obviously those game raps and just an understanding of their sign mints with their there. When you face Gus malzahn, uptempo offense, if they're able to get some first downs, and you've witnessed this and they're able to create a rhythm. They're able to kind of get you on your heels and with all the jet sweep motion pre snap movement. They can affect your eyes, and they can affect the and all of a sudden you bust in assignment, which has been somewhat of an issue with this this Bama defense this year you bust in assignment. And next thing. You know, you got to you got an H back. That's live out. Nobody saw him play action fake the jet sweep and there's a guy out in the flat. Nobody picked up and they dump it to him and he picks up twenty five yards. It's gonna take moments like that for all. I think to get traction. They're gonna stems going to have to have time. But they're gonna have to come up with fooling Alabama, kind of smoking Miers lot of tempo. A lot of distractions with the pre snap movement and hope that affects the communication about Obama. And that they they've bussed coverage three or four times when they do they gotta make big plays. And they got a score on that that that that to me is the only way I can envision them staying in this football game. The other thing is I think Alabama's been dealing with some guys that have been dinged up at receiver. They, of course with two and Jalen I think now they're starting to get healthy. And I think that offense that that used to be like a video game until the Mississippi State and LSU game. I think that Auburn is going to be very. Challenged when when Bama gets into their four wide receivers said Georgia punished Auburn on those nickel Bax safeties trying to cover those inside receivers would not surprise me at all to see to try to make that same thing happen attack. The man the man that all plays by going after the linebackers and going after those Nickelback so bam is going to win the game. But Gus malzahn, man, he saves a few wrinkles for this game. And I wouldn't be surprised if if they get a few busted coverages and make a few big plays in the past game.
