"Chicken accessories right now? Well, I have to tell you that I tried the chicken diapers on kip right when she was young because obviously she was like, she's living in my house and I have carpets and everything along those lines. But she hates having things on her. And I've talked to a lot of people who kind of make these things and they're like, no, no, no, you have to let them suffer through it. But I can't let my birds suffer through it because she just looks so dejected and she walks around and then falls over and then pecks her feathers out 'cause she's trying to get this thing off of her. And I was like, and I tried it multiple times and I was like, I can't do it. And so it kept me like really refuses to wear things, but I think that it's also part of each individual chicken's personality. There are some that will just sit on your lap and cuddle with you. There's others that are more high strong. There are some that are more aloof. It really, I think, depends on the chicken's personality, but kippy has gone to a number of my photo shoots and have obviously been in a number of photo shoots. I mean, she shot everything from like a bidet commercial to celestial seasonings tea. And it just is a byproduct of kind of being around me and me having to take her everywhere. And I just want to be clear that she is not my emotional support hen, but I do call myself the emotional support human for her because she has detachment issues. But we've worked on, we worked on that. And, you know, in order for me to get her into a coop, I slept in the coop for two nights just so that she could just acclimate and know that it's actually a safe place to sleep. And that made all the difference. And you know, I think when you're so connected to an animal, whether it's a hen or not, you understand kind of psychologically what they're going through and you want to be able to a swash, you know, their pain or anguish or anxiety and I think that by doing that and sacrificing two nights sleep for myself. That was actually made all the difference. Hold on a second. We are with summer rain oaks, supermodel summer rain hooks. I can say she's a supermodel. It's animal radio celebrating the connection with our pets and our chickens. Once again, it's the chicken. And we are with supermodel summer rain oaks, and summer has one very, very lucky pet chicken. Not without its problems, though. So your chicken has separation anxiety. Yeah, heavily so. And I had watched a ton of YouTube videos on dog separation anxiety, and I think that you just have to deal with it probably slightly differently. And yet some of the same ways as well. I talked to a lot of people who had hens who had imprinted on them and one person had said to me, oh, it took about a year for my one hand to separate from me and I was like, oh my God, I don't have another year where I have to carry a chicken around my neck every. I only had left kippy alone for two hours for like a whole year. And I think it goes to show you that like chickens, you know, our social creatures and it's part of the reason why they live in flocks and all this other kind of stuff. But they do make such great companions. I think for that reason, is that you share a little bit of this sociality with the hen and they are definitely much more attentive and connected than I would say even a cat, for instance. Yeah. Your apartment is full of what, 700 plants or so, and because you're into plants, you actually wrote a book called how to make a plant love you, cultivating your personal green space. That will be coming out actually. You could pre order it, but that will actually be coming out next year. But yeah, I'm working on a plant book and my last book was actually on cooking called sugar detox me to help people reduce their sugar intake. And the plant stuff has always just been how I live my life. I'm an environmental scientist and entomologist by training. And so living in the city and away from my country home, I grew up in the country, one of the ways that I've kind of been able to combat that is by bringing plants and doors, which was also a very challenging thing having kippy indoors because she liked to mow over quite a few of my plans. I have some videos of her and some of my plant Friends were like, oh my God. You know, be still my heart with, you know, the way that she kind of mows things over. So I have a lot of plants with notches out of them. I mean, she really destroyed my dip in bakia, which is something that is typically poisonous to humans and dogs and cats, but for whatever reason, it had no effect on my chicken. So, you know, I needed to remove a lot of my plants from the floor for fear of kippy eating them all. Do you have a significant other other than kippy? I do, yes. And does he or she get into the whole chicken thing? Or is there any jealousy? You know, he gets a little bit frustrated with it, particularly because her egg song. Now, if you're familiar with that, they have big song and it's not necessarily the most beautiful of songs, but I think it hits at a specific pitch or tone that really irritates him. So I have to be cautious around the time that she's about to lay an egg and it's not like as if she lays an egg every time at 7 a.m. or whatever. Sometimes it's a little bit later in the day. So it could be unpredictable as to when, you know, somebody should be home. Listening to the not so beautiful.

"Huge and still growing problem for air transportation, which causes threats to the health and safety of flight crews and their passengers. And researchers have published a new study in the journal animal cognition. It translates for us some of our dogs most common gestures. In fact, 19 gestures and all, the body language for what they describe the pet me gesture is actually a lot of different gestures made by a dog, such as when they roll over in front of you or press their nose against you. If they are licking you, or if they lift their paw and put their paw on you or even gently bite your arm. Those are all please, pet me, body gestures, your body language. There are a few gestures that dogs have for saying feed me, including using their snout or nose and head to move your hand to their body. I always thought that was pet me, but apparently I'm wrong. Holding a paw in the air while sitting is another thing, or standing on their hind legs, also will tell you, or they're trying to tell you, feed me. Now here's a few other indicators that it might be time for you to bring out some toys or play with me, gestures. Those would be briefly touching you with one paw, repeatedly, kind of like how a child taps you to get your attention, or wiggling their body beneath a person or an object. That's their play with me, body language. And we can't forget the jumping up and down in the same location. Laurie, get a problem with this because to me, these are like glaringly obvious dog. This is something I think it has to be published in a journal. It's like, if you've had a dog and they punch you with their foot, they want something. Oh, this is so cool, ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you summer rain oaks, the amazing model and her chicken. What is your chicken's name? My chicken's name is kippy. Kippy. I love it. So kipi is probably hanging around your shoulders. Where is kippy right now? Well, I'm in my soundproof booth, so she's outside the soundproof booth. But usually you're together, right? Yeah, for the most part, I mean, I've been fostering kipi for about a year, but the good news is, is that I've recently raised enough funds in order to build her a proper coupe, which is really nice. Well, now most people have dogs or cats as pets. Accidentally fell into a situation where this is just your best friend. Yeah, it didn't start off that way. I mean, really the story on how I got kip in the first place was because I'm part of this community garden and there was a bird caught in one of the inhumane rat traps that was set out by one of the gardeners. And I brought it up to the rehabilitation center here in New York called the wild bird fund. And when I was up there, this little chicken just came and jumped on my lap, very friendly chicken. And that was what became known as kipchak, which is Dutch for little chicken, but she's no longer a little chicken anymore. So I just call her kipi for short. And yeah, you know, I was raised with chickens growing up, but I never had one really fully imprint on me and kippy was described to me as more of a people's chicken than a chicken's chicken. And I think she must have been printed on somebody else. So I ended up fostering her when she was about three or four weeks old and we've kind of been together ever since. She's a little over a year now. About a year and a half. Someone is showing me a picture right now of you on the subway with the chicken. What do people usually how do they react when they see you traveling around with a chicken? I think most people in the city are so disconnected from farm life that it is such a surprise alive had a lot of people say, oh, you've just made my day. Or oftentimes I'm traveling with kippy, and then you'll hear, oh my God, that was a chicken. Like in the back as you're kind of walking away. And it is. It's such a surprise and delight for people. Some folks have raised chickens when they were younger, and they have mixed reviews. Some of them had a bad run in with very territorial roosters or they wouldn't their chickens were a little bit more aloof and you wouldn't be able to pick them up, kibbe is not like that at all. I wouldn't say that she's cuddly, but she definitely likes to be pet and she likes to be around people and I think she considers people her flock. This new coupe that I have are in, there are some hens that are there, but I call them enemies. They're not like quite her friends. They're not quite her enemies. They're kind of somewhere in between. But she kind of just like stays on the periphery and yeah, and she's in and out of the coop now. Last night, it was so hot. It's like a 100° here in New York. And she slept in my house. You know, because it's air conditioned air conditioned. So it's good for her. You know what? I just put something together. Last week we had Julie baker, the chicken dress maker on the air. Yeah, her website was called pampered paper. Paper your poultry. And she made chicken diapers too. Chicken Tutu is all kinds of things. I'm thinking that if Julie is smart, she would get a model to help her promote her line of chicken clothing. Do you have any.

"And here at animal radio we love us some dogs. We love us some cats and we love us some chickens. Chickens again. Chickens. We are having supermodel summer rain on today. Summer rain oaks. Lori said earlier, is that her real name? Of course it's a real name. It's on her birth certificate. What a crazy question that is. But she is unlike any model that you know. And I hate to stereotype or generalize, but let me tell you this young lady here, you're going to like her doctor Debbie. She loves bugs. Oh. She actually went to Cornell, to study edit, which is oh, I really like her now. I understand it will ask her about this. I understand in her house, she has really kind of an ecosystem where she has to release certain bugs to counteract the beneficial insects. Beneficial insects is what they call them. Which is very strange. But most importantly, she has a chicken, and this chicken is like her favorite pet friend, whatever you want to call it. This chicken is mostly with her all the time. Wherever she goes on the subways, to photo shoots. And apparently it was a foster failure situation with her. She felt like she's quick to point out too that the chicken kippy is not her emotional support animal. Yes. That she is the emotional support human for the chicken. We're gonna find out more about this coming up in just a few minutes with summer rain, oaks right here on animal radio. Also, do your pets dream. Yes, sure. Oh yeah. Of course. You see their little legs kicking and they're twitchy. Twitching in that. What are they dreaming? That's the question. We're going to try to find out with doctor deirdre Barrett. She is an author and a psychologist who teaches it. And she's known for her research on dreams, hypnosis, and imagery. She's written a book on evolutionary psychology. Remind me to ask her if we should wake them up while they're dreaming. You do that, Judy, don't you? You wake your dog up when she's having a bad dream. Yeah. Okay, I'll remind you to ask her that, okay? Thank you. Someone remind me that, remind her. Okay, I'll remind you to remind her I can't remind anybody because I'm gonna forget. Yeah. I already did. We'll also be talking about noise phobias on today's show and those noises that scare your animals and what to do about them. But first, your calls for doctor Debbie or Joey velana, yes, he's here to answer your calls too. You can also ask your questions for the free animal radio app for iPhone Android and BlackBerry. And at the bottom of every hour we do a news check with miss Laurie Brooks, or should I say doctor Laurie Brooks? Because you got to be a doctor or something, right? You're so smart. No, I'm a nurse, actually, but no. You are. Not a doctor. You smarter than some doctors. I am a nurse. A human nurse. Yes, a human nerd. We have to clarify, because we call veterinary nurses do. Do you really, I've often wondered that I heard it in one vet office and I thought, that's interesting. I've never heard that before. It's kind of up and coming. But yeah, some places do it just so people can relate to who the staff member is, that they're looking at. So that they understand nurse. Technician doesn't mean a whole lot to that. Right. Right. Well, coming up, I'm going to tell you about there is a new social media network coming out. But it is only for wildlife. And how humans will be able to participate in that, but still keep it animals only thing. It's a great idea. I'm so intrigued. I'm wondering how this wildlife likes something with their little toes and things. Without that type of thumb, that's kind of difficult. We're going to find out at the bottom of this hour with Lori Brooks. First, your calls. Let's see. Hey Randy. Hey, how you doing? Doing good. Where are you calling from? I'm calling from orange, California. Okay, listening on coast, I assume, how can we help you the whole team is here for you? Okay, well, I was calling, I just have a little anxiety. My dog, she is about four and a half years old. And she is, she pulled up limp a couple of months ago, where she wouldn't use the right leg. I took her to emergency and they did a battery of tests and x-rays and the vet said that she saw displacement in both. Oh, okay. And so then I took her the recurred me to a surgeon, which I took to and they were showing me and I could see the dysplasia in the x-rays. But he showed me these little pieces that he said were in there and said that we should do surgery, but then she pulled up. It's been over two months. So he's only had an incident like once. And it lasted like a day and a half I kept her on bed rest. But it's like she runs in place and nothing happens. And then every once in a while, so it's like, I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Sure. Schedule for the 12 for her surgery, but I just don't want to put her through it. It reaches well, she's young enough to do it now and so I'm just confused. Sure, now in what kind of breed wish she again? She is a golden mix. Okay, golden retriever mix. Okay, well. If I could, if I could have made a standard case description of a breed for elbow dysplasia, I would say either a golden retriever or a Labrador retriever. Just meaning I do see it a lot in those breeds, as well as some others, Germans, masks, and even dachshunds on the small side of the crew. Oh, wow. Yeah, so elbow dysplasia is kind of the equivalent of hip dysplasia, but in a different joint. And the most typical time we would notice this if we were fortunate enough to pick it up, is sometimes as young as 6 to 12 months of age. So in some cases, with young dogs that have kind of occasional limping when they're young, it could be sometimes the first hint that we have a problem. But a lot of times it really doesn't manifest at that young age. So we don't know about it until they get a bit older and we start to get the arthritis developing in there. So the trick with elbow dysplasia and what I would advise and I think please stand really most surgeons would advise is that the sooner we can intervene with surgery than the better chance of it being of benefit. And that does depend, I'm not on the ground and looking at your pet and the x-rays and so forth. But that's in general. So I would much rather recommend and follow through it with surgery in a younger than an older pet because once we're older, we typically are going to have a lot more degenerative changes in the elbow. The elbow joint isn't really a joint that we have a lot of room in there. So it's a hinge joint. So when they start to get these what we call osteophytes, which are basically little pieces of bone that start to develop associated with the arthritis, it limits the range of motion of the joint, but it causes pain. So that takes a long time for those things to develop and see on an x-ray. So we would rather catch these cases early, do surgery and we're always going to have some arthritis. We knew that's going to always be the case. But they have better return to function and less arthritis if we intervene when they're younger before we get a lot going on there. You know, her name is nunu. And trust her, which means a little girl in Chinese, but I asked our primary vet and she goes, I go, doctor vanny has got she's only four years old and she's as well as that's a lot of times when it develops,.

"Something I've been wondering about quite a bit myself. If quantum computing ever actually bears fruit and we have to assume it will at some point and probably some point soon, one of the promises of quantum computing is that it would be able to break encryption as we know it. I assume people are thinking about this and preparing for it. Well, according to MIT technology review, some people are preparing for this eventuality, the bad guys. The first link in the long reads posits the idea that a lot of the hacking we've been seeing right now involves hackers stealing data today so that they can save it and crack it sometime in the near future. Quote, the threat of a nation state adversary getting a large quantum computer and being able to access your information is real, says Dustin moody, a mathematician at the National Institute of standards and technology, the threat is that they copy down your encrypted data and hold onto it until they have a quantum computer. Quote. Faced with this harvest now and decrypt later strategy officials are trying to develop and deploy new encryption algorithms to protect secrets against an emerging class of powerful machines. That includes the Department of Homeland Security, which says it is leading a long and difficult transition to what is known as post quantum cryptography. We don't want to end up in a situation where we wake up one morning and there's been a technological breakthrough. And then we have to do the work of three or four years within a few months all with the additional risks associated with that. Says Tim maurer, who advises the secretary of Homeland Security on cybersecurity and emerging technology end quote. Somewhat related, but something that I wasn't aware of, the currently booming underground market for bots, which are capable of breaking two factor authentication. It works like this, according to motherboard, quote, either on telegram or Discord, a hacker enters their target's phone number and the platform, the hacker wants to break into. In the background, the bot then places the automated call to the target. Connecti told motherboard that the bots use sites similar to Twilio, a communications company for businesses that lets customers send messages and make calls, although, connect you said not all of the bots use Twilio specifically. When the bot places the automated call and asks the victim to enter a code they just received, the hacker will simultaneously trigger a legitimate code to be sent from the targeted platform to the victim's phone. They may do this by entering the victim's username and password on the site so the victim receives a login or authorization code. Although the script and the call may tell the victim that the code is for one purpose, perhaps blocking a cash transfer or protecting their account from unauthorized entry. In reality, the hacker is using the code to enter the account themselves. The bot then takes the victim's input at code, feeds it back to the bot's interface and the hacker can then use the code to log in. Quote. We've spoken recently about people rethinking the fragility of supply chains around the world, the very supply chains that have made our world modern thus far in the 21st century. To that end, this piece from The Wall Street Journal looks at that reassessment that is going on right now. Quote, miss Coleman, who is also a director at Goldman Sachs Group and Dell Technologies, said some of her customers and automotive medical and consumer durable goods industries that rely on manufacturing facilities in Europe and Asia, increasingly when a presence in the Americas. They're realizing right now they're losing business because they're kind of stuck with a very long, very efficient, but very inflexible supply chain. Miss Coleman said, there are some people who are saying, look, what I need is short term because this is never going to happen again. She said, then there are other people who are saying, this is going to happen more often than we think. The world is a very different place, and it's not just the pandemic. It's natural disasters. It's the floods down in the south. It's tornadoes. It's hurricanes, end, quote. Majestic steel, USA, which processes and distributes flat rolled steel for a number of industries has used acquisitions to broaden its footprint to the West Coast, adding to locations in Ohio Nevada, Florida and Texas. We want to be closer to our customers whether because of trucking capacity or just the pure challenges and impediments in the supply chain said Dave kippy, majestic's chief operating officer. So here's an analogy that this makes me think of, you know how tech companies use content delivery networks and local data centers to be ever so close to your computer or your device so they can make loading a web page or an app ever so much faster, even if it's just by milliseconds. What if we need the equivalent of distributed data centers and CDNs, but for the supply chain? This next one is the piece that I promised or hinted at yesterday. The U.S. has been the world's sole superpower for 30 years now because, well, to a degree because it is always had better technology than any adversary. Satellites, smart bombs, drones. The list goes on and on, technology that other countries simply didn't have access to. But you will notice that a lot of adversaries have cut up on those things. No worries, though, right? Because the U.S. has Silicon Valley, the locus of technology advancement. Yeah, but on the one hand, despite being conceived in a mail of defense contracts, modern Silicon Valley has increasingly shied away from the military industrial complex as we've discussed, and at the same time, the military industrial complex itself, the actual Pentagon, they're not exactly on the cutting edge. As we've also discussed on more than one occasion, we still hear stories about nuclear missile silos being run using floppy disks, which can be a good thing, but that's a whole nother story. Anyway, from fast company, a very long piece about how amid rising tensions, a cadre of defense insiders and tech players want to remake The Pentagon and Silicon Valley's image, quote today, the technology that will likely decide 21st century warfare will be based on artificial intelligence, autonomy, quantum computing, space, cybersecurity, and BioTech. In other words, sectors in which Silicon Valley has already invested heavily to serve businesses and consumers. These technologies are being developed at a much faster pace and with a much faster delivery than anything the primes or Department of Defense is working on says Steve blank and entrepreneur and Stanford professor, who authored the secret history of Silicon Valley, a series about the military ties that created the region. Quote, the Defense Department is realizing that we've got to have access to leading technology Brown tells me. Remaking The Pentagon in Silicon Valley's image will be far more difficult a public private challenge than say Uber and Lyft steamrolling municipal taxi commissions. You have to think about the military as a large bureaucracy that has existing relationships with primes. And they all live in a symbiosis that makes sense to them, says Eric Schmidt, the former chairman and CEO of Google, who has backed several defense startups and shared the national security commission on artificial intelligence. Those major contractors have entrenched themselves by influencing contracting rules, spending heavily on lobbying and sprinkling stable jobs across congressional districts. Should Silicon Valley unseat legacy defense companies, this transformation will come with its own risks, autonomous weapons remove military personnel from harm, but they also inoculate human operators from the suffering they inflict. Even artificial intelligence proponents express concern that it could advance at a pace leading to a fully automated war taking place between algorithms. Two generations ago, the microchips developed in the valley were used in the nuclear missiles that very nearly ended life as we knew it. In exchange for that military buildup, society received middle class jobs and eventually the commercial Internet. Today, a software focused defense industry may not yield the same civic benefits. General Dynamics, for example, has 84,000 full-time U.S. employees located in all 50 states. And drill has approximately 700 employees mostly in Irvine, California. Silicon Valley startups have targeted and engulfed several large economic sectors over the past decade from education to finance, defense is the final frontier. Quote, we've affected probably one to 2% of DoD procurement at this point Brown says. Dollar wise, I'm not expecting it to be more than 50%, but it sure as heck needs to be more than one..

"Yes, calling in about the doughnut place. There's a there's a place in password. Get down, Dina called the doughnut hole. And it's been there since, uh, the late sixties. I know for sure. We used to stop. There are going to see Lee on the way to see Lee and get doughnuts would go there and get doughnuts for the The little Little League football games and stuff, but it's called the doughnut hole, and they Rock, Kippy or whoever don't Don't. Don't even touch the doughnut hole. Hmm. How do you How do you order your doughnut? Well, No, no, no, no, no. It's like glazed glazed me to all hell did. I don't. Oh, they were awesome. What I remember because we live in Deer Park and we'd stop the doughnut hole. The demanded answered the phone. He knows about the doughnut hole. He lives. He's living past the Get down, Dina. So I lived in Deer Park. But my dad found the doughnut hole One time. Oh, no, you don't. You don't hippie. Don't don't touch the doughnut hole. But you know what? I don't understand. And I've said this for years. When you deliver doughnuts when you get doughnuts for the for the office, or whatever else The guy who's going in is always worried that he's not going to get the order, right? He's just you know, you're just doing it to be nice, right? Whether you're a salesman or the boss or whatever. So they'll say, All right, we got X number of people. I'm going to get X number of doughnuts. And they'll say, uh, Let's say you got eight people in the office. So you get a dozen doughnuts. Because it's girls. Because if it's a working class office, a dozen doughnuts would be for two people. So you go to get the doughnuts and the guy says, you know, he'll say, they'll say, you know what's what's the mix? What you ought to do is get a dozen glazed doughnuts and be done and then everybody's happy, right. Stop tuning now, Ramon. Everybody's happy, but what do you do instead? Let's see. I'll get I'll get six glazed, and then I'll get one each of crappy doughnuts. So it'll be jelly field and that yellow jelly feel that yellow thing I don't know what that thing is A strawberry fields shut up. Let's do a toasted pecans, toasted coconut. I don't know what the hell And so then here's what happens. First person. Hey, there's doughnuts in the kitchen if anybody wants them. Boom. Two guys go down there. They knock out those six doughnuts. They don't They would have another doughnut each, but they don't want to mess with the crap doughnuts. And that's what that's what you're left with. Is a crap doughnut. So now you've got those other six doughnuts. Now through the course of the morning. Somebody will come in there and go. Oh, I guess they took all the glazed. Well. Okay. I guess if I heat this thing up and get a fork and a knife and eat it that way, I can eat a bite of it. And so that's what they'll do Somebody that was really, really wanted. A glazed doughnut will now Take one of the jelly filled doughnuts and they'll cut a corner of it and they lied to by and it was okay and then they'll throw it away. And by 11 o'clock or noon, There's a sad looking box of Four doughnuts left in there that nobody touched. If those had been glazed, they'd be gone. If I can do a little bit of good today, it will be if you're the guy that orders For the office. Unless somebody specifically says I want X Y Z doughnut and they are going to eat that doughnut. Don't get anything but glazed. Everybody likes glazed. It's the lowest common denominator. Everybody likes place. Almost nobody likes that specialty doughnut. Now you might say, Well, why do they make it? If you'll notice they don't make many of them because there is the guy that comes in. But that guy doesn't work for you. And if he does, he's only one of them. Nobody likes anything but glazed Donuts. Well, Michael, okay? Yeah, you do. But Julie the glazed donut before you eat that See unless that is your favorite doughnut. Then don't even comment, because you would have been just as happy with a glazed doughnut solve the problem. Just do glazed donuts. That's it, That's it, and that's all. Don't even get me going on Karachi's Because I will tell you what I am on a search for If you go to West Texas. You will get And it's not even a ca Laci. And then somebody has to tell you. You. I'm check. You're not check. You're not check your from Bellville. Where you've been for eight generations. You've never been to Prague. Don't tell me I'm check. That's Michael. That's not a ca Laci, that. What's your comment is not a ca Laci. Okay, Alright. Okay. You You got the last name? That's about all you got going But they'll have to argue with you over. I don't care if you call the CA Laci. Most people here call it a Karachi. That's the same guy that does this because what they really want to tell you is there of Czech heritage? That's really what that conversations about when you get down to it, like Danny and Liberty. I don't think the gate is the issue. It sounds like the issue as they want the old man office property. That's what it sounds like to me. I don't know. Maybe that I'd love to hear their side of the story, but that's not. The issue is not the gate. From what I can tell the issue is they want the old man out of there. They don't want him living there. They won his property. That's what several people have now told me but whatever. The issue here. What were we talking about? Ramon Oka, Laci's the issue here when people have to argue with that is they just want to tell you, I'm of Czech heritage. Okay, Now that we've done that, can we talk about whatever the item is, and I'm talking about.
