Army of lobbyists helped water down banking regulations
"Recent bank collapses that prompted a federal rescue are a reminder of the power still held by Washington lobbyists. It seemed like a good idea at the time, in 2018 Republicans working with president Trump to slash bank regulations joined forces with red state Democrats facing grim reelection prospects. The group passed a bill that rolled back portions of the 2010 Dodd Frank law. The bill was marketed as a form of relief for overburdened community banks, but it also lifted the threshold for strict oversight and mandatory stress testing of large mid sized banks, it is now being blamed for contributing to the collapse of Silicon Valley bank and signature bank whose executives lobbied for the Bill, the effort drew an army of more than a thousand lobbyists, companies and trade groups specifically mentioning the legislation spent more than $400 million in 2017 and 2018, according to an Associated Press analysis, Americans for financial reform, a watchdog group says we can draw a direct line between the deregulation driven by the bank lobby, and the chaos of the last few weeks. In Trump case, NY grand jury appears near end of its work
"A grand jury in New York appears near to finishing its work investigating Donald Trump over a hush money payment to a porn star. Police in Manhattan dropped off barricades yesterday, making preparations as a grand jury shrouded in secrecy draws closer to a possible indictment of former president Donald Trump. Trump claimed over the weekend, he expected to face criminal charges and urged supporters to protest his possible arrest, but reporters appeared to outnumber protesters at approach Trump gathering yesterday where the AP spoke with Gavin wax with the New York young Republican club. This never happened before. This is unprecedented. AP correspondent Mike balsamo explains that this is the state investigation after the federal probe that landed Michael Cohen in prison. There is a legal theory being explored in New York, looking at whether or not the violation of campaign finance laws could also be applied as a state offense. If that indeed is the case, it could increase the penalty for making it from a misdemeanor into a felony. I'm Jennifer King.

The king couldn't live with him having those beliefs, so he canceled Thomas more. The old fashioned way. By beheading him. The story of Moore's rise and fall is commemorated in the play and movie a man for all seasons. If you haven't seen it yet, you really should give it a watch. But the themes of law and justice, especially as they impact the tension between church and state are extremely relevant to our lives now. One particular scene feels especially pertinent to our current situation, where a former president is being railroaded through reckless legal machinations.

Eichel's hat trick leads Golden Knights past Columbus 7-2
"Jack eichel notched his second hat trick of the season and fourth of his career and leading the golden knight's 7 two pounding of the blue jackets. Alex patrol had a career high four assists for Vegas, which moved back atop the Western Conference standings with 92 points and took a two point lead over the kings in the Pacific division. "AP sports. I'm Bruce Morton. Princeton rose into the sweet 16. The 15th seeded tigers were in control throughout in eliminating Missouri 78 63. Princeton is in the south region, as is number 5 San Diego state, which beat Furman's 75 52. The region's top seed, Alabama, moved on by besting Maryland 73 51. Defending champ Kansas was also a top seed. That meant nothing to Arkansas, which got past the jayhawks 72 71. Also in the west, second seed UCLA had to hang on to beat northwestern 68 63. In the east, fourth seed Tennessee dumped duke 65 52. The Midwest produced no surprises with top seed Houston handling auburn 81 64 and number two Texas defeating Penn State, 71 66, NBA winners included the sixers kings and grizzlies. The Red Cross Is Mapping Out Routes for Illegals to Cross the Border
"Debbie showed me this article on the Red Cross, and it's a little disturbing. It's the Red Cross has guides for U.S. bound migrants that have maps of the border, resources along the journey, lists of things to do when you encounter dangers along the highway. And it even goes to the extent of telling people like bring your contraceptives with you in necessary cases, Red Cross clinics and medical brigades will give them to you for free. So this appears to be like a how to be an illegal manual. Well, that's disturbing to the contraceptives. I mean, are they saying that they're going to get raped along the way so they may as well bring well, either that or, hey, listen, if you want to, I mean, who knows what they're saying, they appear to be just trying to make life easy and show people where to go. I mean, this is almost like a, you know, I mean, to the degree that crossing the border is an illegal act. This is to me no different than how to rob a bank. Yeah, no, it is. Right? Yeah. So, and these packets apparently come their stamped with the international committee of the Red Cross and the American Red Cross. So they show you what do they show you? Hotels and clinics and shelters. They have clearly defined lines that take you to various parts of El Paso, Texas, nogales, Arizona, I lived close to nogales. Met Gala in Texas. And so, and evidently all of this has also been funded by the U.S. government. By the Biden administration. Shocker. So the Red Cross apparently is part, gets grants from fema. The federal emergency. So what fema says, and again, this is all put into the garb of humanitarian. Well, you know, these guys are coming in and anyway, so we got to make sure they don't starve or you know when we drive to the valley and we see those big tubs of water. Yeah, that's agua. And so you're like thinking, um, why would they have that on the side there of the king ranch, which is like total desolation. There's nothing there. But they have these big tubs. Why? Because they're expecting for these illegals to walk through there and oh, you know, they need water, so there's agua.

World shares up after First Republic aid spurs Wall St rally
"A group of banks of extended a lifeline to U.S. based first republic bank, offering reassurance to financial markets. Markets rallied on Wall Street and in Europe and Asia, after news at 11 big banks have offered a combined deposit of $30 billion to help troubled first republic bank. Markets gyrated this week after the collapse of Silicon Valley bank and investors were looking for other troubled banks amid concerns over the unintended toll that interest rate hikes are taking on financial institutions. Shares of Credit Suisse plunged after their biggest shareholder, the Saudi national bank, said it would not provide any more support, but rebounded after Switzerland's national bank offered $54 billion in liquidity, Stephen Ennis of SPI asset management says in a report, the market remains cautious, traders do not want to get overexcited, especially with investors still focusing on what can go wrong instead of what could go right. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen told a Senate committee Thursday that the U.S. banking system remains sound, yesterday the European Central Bank raised its key rate by half a percentage point that expectations on Wall Street are that this week's turmoil will push the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut its rate hike next week to a quarter of a percentage point. "The kings of clinched their first winning season in 17 years by downing the nets in Brooklyn, one O one 96, de Monte sabonis had 24 points and 21 rebounds for the kings, kings coach Mike Brown. Domes with 14 defensive rebounds. He was obviously amazing. Another double double for him. They improved to ten and two since the all star break as Deandre Fox chipped in 18.6 rebounds and 5 assists. The nets are just one and a half games ahead of 7th place Miami as Brooklyn tries to avoid the play in tournament. Mikhail bridges had a team high 23 points for the nets.

"While it's known that former president Donald Trump is running again for the Republican nomination. The question remains of who might be his running mate, a shadow contest is underway with Republicans openly jockeying to position themselves as potential running mates with Donald Trump. Trump spoke during a swing through Iowa on Monday. We're going to have a lot of great choices for vice president. We're going to pick a great one. Three women who have been mentioned as possible contenders include representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, at least stefanik of New York, and news anchor turned failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Carrie Lake, who kissed a portrait of Trump that was placed on stage at the conservative political action conference this month. I don't know about you, but I say we spend every single day from here going forward striving to make America great again. According to people who have spoken to Trump, he's in no rush to make a decision, but allies say he is looking for someone who is unabashedly loyal. Trump allies file ethics complaint against Gov. DeSantis
"A political action committee for Donald Trump is accusing Florida governor Ron DeSantis of ethics violations, as the former president steps up criticisms of Ron DeSantis, a Trump allied super PAC manga Inc is filed a complaint with the Florida commission on ethics. They're asking the commission to investigate the Florida governor for allegedly violating campaign finance and ethics rules while running a shadow bid for The White House, the complaint cites the governor's meetings with donors outreach to potential campaign staff and his courting of influential Republicans in early voting states. All 9 members of the commission were either appointed by desantis or Republican lawmakers, the governor's office calls it frivolous and politically motivated while former Homeland Security official Ken cuccinelli, who recently launched a political action committee supporting desantis describes the charges as spaghetti thrown at the wall. In opening remarks at a Senate finance committee hearing meant to address President Biden's budget proposal, treasury secretary Janet Yellen says the U.S. banking system remains sound deposits will be there when Americans need them and that the government took decisive and forceful actions to strengthen public confidence in the banking system by an official's face questions about the decision to protect money at two failed regional banks, a move some observers called a bailout, the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission have launched investigations into the collapse, which may be connected to rising interest rates meant to control inflation. "Incredible memories where I get to host the Tiger tailgate show for a few years until they unceremoniously dump me because I was too controversial on radio and TV. I'll never forget that firing. I still get I still cringe when I drive by California dreaming over on I 85 in Greenville. That's where Mike Whittaker fired me from being and I was really into it. I was the Tiger tailgate host. I was the football out of the basketball PA announcer at Clemson. I mean, they loved me and I loved them. What an experience that was. You talk about a blessed experience to get to be involved in a big time college athletics program like that in a small level, but still traveled with the team on game day. Got to sit next to my buddy, Jim Phillips, who was the longtime voice of the Clemson tigers, and then somebody in gaffney didn't like me. It was a booster. It was a big donor. I ticked somebody off with one of my opinions and it all came screeching to a halt. And I think about that over the years because had that not happened, had I not got fired from Clemson for being from because of my opinions on radio and TV. I was doing a local TV commentary at the time. And something I said rub somebody the wrong way and they said, get that Gallagher guy out. He's out. Had that not happened, I would have probably never left South Carolina. I'll bet I'd still be in Greenville, South Carolina. Happy as a clan, because life is good there. Life is really, it's actually great there. In fact, I got to get back my friend Peggy and her sister patty have opened up a booth at the big west side market over the Augusta road. I gotta check that out 'cause knowing the king's sisters, it is a beautiful, beautiful booth. I'll bet you that you're gonna get some good items because they have exquisite taste. Anyway, that's my love affair with South Carolina.

Remember when meta the parent company of Facebook and Instagram laid off 11,000 workers in November now CEO Mark Zuckerberg says they will not be filling 5000 open positions and will cut another 10,000 jobs, met a share prices rose at the news and early trading, earnings of the California company have been hurt by a downturn in the online advertising market in competition from rivals like TikTok, meta has invested billions on developing what Zuckerberg calls the metaverse. He says the layoffs are in service of building a leaner more technical company. Other tech companies have been cutting costs, too, this month Amazon paused construction on its second headquarters based in Virginia, following the biggest round of layoffs in that company's history and shifting plans around remote work. GOP leader 'pausing' social media after liking naughty LGBTQ posts
"Tennessee's lieutenant governor Randy mcnally is taking a break from social media. Last week, 79 year old Republican Randy mcnally said he had no intention of stopping after revelations that he repeatedly commented on racy post by a 20 year old gay model and other LGBTQ personalities. The lieutenant governor of Tennessee has been accused of hypocrisy and was lampooned on Saturday Night Live this week for among other things, saying his intent was engagement and encouragement when he commented with hearts and fire emojis on a photo of the young man's backside. Mcnally has issued an apology, saying he did not mean to embarrass anyone, and says he's pausing all social media activity to reflect and receive more guidance. Mcnally denies having a record that his anti gay that says he supports traditional marriage and has supported legislation restricting drag shows. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Senate has passed a bill that would base people's legal gender identities on their anatomy at birth and prevent transgender people from changing their driver's licenses and birth certificates to match their chosen gender identity. "Yeah i i. I'll be honest jesse. I'm just not in a position to to come up with a number of game issue. That's just not where i'm going. But i am going to continue on the team. I was just talk touching on earlier. The king's are entering a different phase. They're out of the rebuild. They're still developing. It's not like they're you know they. So i think you're gonna see a fair number of games from these kids. I really do think that it's still. It might be a an out situation where you're in for ten games. You're down for ten games. You're back and forth the guy that stands out to me and again. This is still very young but the kings have so many young players. How do you stand out. How do you separate yourself. How do you create a niche for yourself. that makes you unique and irreplaceable. And know that. I'm looking for coupons area. I think the the waiver situation hurt some early right because he doesn't have to clear as far as i'm aware so he's an easy send type of thing If i have that fact impact i apologized. But that's the way it's been explained to me so far I just like his combination of skill and sites so that that works for him turcott. He's a high pick fifth overall still in the development stage. He's kinda one of those tweeter guys. Though right he gets by on intelligence he gets an effort. He's all over the puck. He hounds the puck down. I'm sure if you're a winner. You love to play with them. But where housing separate himself. Now where's his strength going to be fog amo- the way we've seen him you know he's he's active and he. He seems to be productive like the bottom line. I'm gonna just end it right here. Guys is this the young core of the kings not nhl they have to dominate at the american hockey joel. I'm talking about top five in scoring for a couple of guys top ten. They've got a dominate. If the kings prospect pool is as good as the independent sources say they are well. They have to go into a situation now. They have a second year head coach down there in ontario inc. There's gonna be a lot of a comfort level there they have to dominate at the age level. Nick without getting into specific numbers. I think it's pretty clear. The kings have veterans that. If everything goes well to start the season theoretically you could play an entire season without seeing any of the kids. be called up that haven't already but we'll we see kids called up and is it a good thing if we don't i suppose well i won't get into individuals. Jimmy touched on that but usually what happens is number. One hire team is performing at the nhl level. The kings are doing well. Let's say exceeding expectations which we all hope they will. Then you're good with what you have injuries than always become part of a season and that necessitates call ups and obviously call. Ups don't necessarily mean the top score in ontario in the ahl gets recall..

"So obviously right off the top of the sixteen year old he's gonna kinda spark interest He had a slower first half and a six year old year and he had a very good second half sixteen year old year. We were aware of him as a sixteen year. Old of the top player coming into the oh l. and Have kind of enjoy watching human that year which we could have seen a more live Last year there's always a lot of speculation in any draft year. What players will be available when your team gets to pick you know. Who will they take. What's their internal ranking system. Not gonna ask reveal all of that. But from the king's perspective did brand. Clark fall to number eight you know. Were you excited. That he was still available when it was time for the kings to make their pick. Well definitely excited about getting him and You know evening out our prospect pool a little bit with the defenseman We're not picking for position. Obviously but the fact that it was in the wheelhouse where we were was was a good fit for us as well and we like player. We obviously liked them to go over our list. Obviously we're not gonna do that but You know i. It was the type of year where it wasn't surprising. Crew went in that in that first group of eight or ten. I think different people publications central scouting. Whatever had different rankings of all the players kind of after Maybe power so And i think power solidified himself at the world championships as as the the first pick in the draft but After that i think teams were vastly different. Besides yapping no microphone but it certainly part of my job and it never used to be. Well i shouldn't say never use the. It wasn't when i started when i started. It was a hobby. When i started. Gosh i don't think. I had a job when i started. I was in a weird place. I wasn't really sure what direction to go into next. I wound up getting a job. And i did this sort of on weekends and evenings and as i said because you guys and because of the support and and patience can of shown. I now find myself doing this fulltime. Which is amazing again. Incredibly incredibly lucky. But as looking back. And so i dug up the very first episode that we recorded back in september two thousand and seven wanted to play just a little bit a little clip of it because it struck me. It's almost two minutes into the very first episode And it's something that That was important to me to hear myself. Say whatever fourteen fifteen years ago and and it's something that's important for me To maintain and to still believe in Solomona play that for you right now. "The way to go now. Yeah i think. I think they're still trying to figure it out. I think you know. Every time. I feel like they have something figured out. Another guy gets hurt you know you. We had spoken briefly via twitter that they had something humming there with with anderson dolan centering grunts trim and more and then all of a sudden you know anderson dolan's out for an extended period of time unclear. When he's come back. Okay so now we gotta figure out what we're gonna do. Lozad came back after a short absence wasn't doing a whole heck of a lot initially making some mistakes and now the last two games i feel like he's really been working on getting back to that game that makes them super effective. Even today can be second goal completely set up because those ostentatious created a turnover at the blue line. And then more you know had the patience and the wherewithal to hold on with the puck as you were driving to the net and caught can't be coming through on the slot. I mean that's that's just great hockey. Play all around from all three of those guys. Jack we saw campari pari play in the first game against the anaheim sent back to ontario for the second one I realize stretching back outside of the duck series to talk about could party but we didn't really cover the blues on the podcasts. At so what did you think about Excuse me what did you think about. Campari would you see that you liked from him and what do you think. Maybe he needs to work on. Well i think the first. He won't divulge all the secrets on where he wants to see campari improve mcclellan reference the same exact thing and i think you know in the limited amount of time in games that we saw rashness. We saw his ability to compete in his skill level. But we also saw his you know maybe his inability or inexperience on the defensive end going up against bigger stronger centerman or whoever it may be in front of the net unfortunately it took a few penalties and lost a few battles in front of the net But i think you're right. There is something that proves to be a great learning opportunity for guys like rastas. Who aren't going to be. You know your connor mcdavid but they are first round draft picks so you expect to make the nhl one day you know if they are indeed that guy they understand what they learned the nhl level. They go back to the age. They fix that. They work on it and then they're ready to handle that when they get back up again. I'm looking at the stats over the two games against anaheim. mikey anderson. The only player in both games not to be on the ice for goal against i i asked him. I sorta pitched him a softball question. I just kind of wanted to see how he answered and i asked him. You know You're only guy on the is your eleven goals scored in that first game. You only guy that didn't have one critic you proud of that. And he gave me like a perfect rob scuderi. "I think a five to one victory over anaheim in unfortunately a overtime loss prior. Is you know three out of four on the road is something that we will take a anytime we set out at least staples center or you're in our chatting before we started recording you. It sounded like you're even surprised that you were saying it. That you're You're very positive about this team raid. Yeah i am very positive about this team i can. The good thing is even in their still sound surprised. By the way. I'm gonna. I'm sorry but you can find so many positive things in so many of the losses from this team this season and i think that's the most encouraging thing like i love this team's medal. I love their resolve their young team. And we've mentioned this on our show many times there's been so many opportunities the season where they could have basically folded up shop called it a day taking the loss Specifically that lasts wrote scheme on the road tripping as minnesota. I have felt like it was a perfect opportunity for a young team to be like. Hey we're satisfied with ourselves. Let's go home and they didn't. They fought back and that kind of goes into what happened in the first game against the ducks again. It was one of those situations where they kept fighting back. And it's just great to see. And i feel really good. Certainly the game itself was kind of a stinker. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna tell you that. It was a masterpiece. Or anything like that but i do love their their resilience and for young team. It's hard to teach that. I'm very happy to have vardi. Do aereas garter i mean it's not to. It really is not serious. It's it's hard not to you know if you if you compare it to. I think especially how the season started We were pretty doom and gloom. You know the first handful of games just really wasn't seen anything from one game to the next that i felt like they could really build on and as they slowly got some guys back from injury from cova protocol. And especially you know. Once once everything of coalesced. I felt like they were starting to build on things and then obviously they suffered some injuries some serious injuries to roy walker and and i felt like that's at them back quite a bit so once i feel like once. This team is healthy. They're they have something there. There's there's definitely the essence of something from game to game. And you know to. Jack's point it's not it's not the same guys i mean yes. I brown drew. They're having great seasons. But i feel like every game. There's a second level of scoring that's showing up either velocities having a great night or these last two. You know you're having campy contribute and so i first season that. I'm not really sure we knew what we were going to get when it started. It's it's gone in such a great direction. I feel like over the course of the last twenty twenty the twenty five games now. Twenty four games. I think it's twenty five. I think when. I tweeted out sort of tongue in cheek. I guess that the kings biggest rival right now was the kings after that first game against anaheim because it feels to me like i mean..

"It's really fun as a kings fan with all these seasons of emotional investment in these two is And now carter's getting in on the action to you. They make it look. Easy sometimes is kind of maybe another way to say yes. Look like the play in arizona with like petar was kind of along the boards. There were two guys on him and it was. You can say at one way of like. The coyotes didn't cover dustin brown. Or you can say another where like dustin brown knew where to be exhibited that pass from undergo petar and he's just so good like within five feet of the blue paint that if he's there in that situation you're he's putting an end because what seven maybe eight of his goals have been within five of the blue paint and he just like he dominates that area. He's so good in those little little spaces. And i mean kotaro. You've you've watched him a lot longer than me but like he just has that ability to to make the right pass and make the right play like nine the nine times out of one hundred and it seems like he's getting rewarded with points this year for making the right play and it's not just making the right play like he's now getting the stats because one of the fights that i used to have on. Oh eight years ago with king fans was. There was a small but vocal group of people who had accused us brown of having stone hands. And i and this is again eight nine ten years ago ham and i would say not only does he not have stone hands but he's actually one of the better passers on the team especially when he's playing with players that he's familiar with and you see now like i said these opportunities open themselves present themselves and i don't i'm i don't claim to be a strategical savant when it comes to hockey strategy. "We're gonna you know as we talked about a few podcasts ago is once you've played every team in the division once or twice you kind of get a feel for where we think we belong and i think you know up until this game losing streak. We thought we are going to be right in that race for four. Do i think we're still in it absolutely is they. Just you know. Losing streaks can't get big adding if you can get back to the splits and get back to you. Know two or three game win streak. You know it's important because a lot of these teams the good thing about this division and the bad thing is is you're playing feathers so teams can beat each other upper. You can start splits. The no one really moves a down the standings but For for la. They gotta take care of their business. And that's hopefully getting healthy in in both injury wise and covid Wise but you know san jose's a team that we should be able to beat if for playing the right type game in It'll be it'll be telling is an organization where we are within the division. Once you get past san jose. And i want to remind people in this is just me trying desperately to be positive between cove between covid protocol losses and injuries. The kings of really only had the lineup or close to the lineup. Today expected for five games. And i'm not even including the injuries. The martinsburg matt lafon that. I'm just talking about sean. Walker matt roy. Lozad and athens. Walker and mcdermott were not available. Neither was peterson for the first game. Against minnesota they were available in the second game both games against colorado both games against saint louis and one of the two games against minnesota in those games the kings were three to one. So there you go. We'll take that. Yeah you know is if these guys can climb their way back to five hundred and get healthy. I think we've got a whole nother positive. Second half of the season to come. You know and the unfortunate thing is given the past and given the roster situation right now. Unfortunately i hate to say it things. Could you know kinda crumble out of control here in the next few weeks or next few games if they if they don't you know put some wins on the board because all the sudden it's the here we go again syndrome while they've got four games at home to against san jose to against minnesota like we said and i hate to be dramatic about it but i think this four-game may be may be the playoffs stakes because if they can beat san jose once than what it really comes down to is. How do you stack up against minnesota on the season series right because presumably vegas colorado and saint. Louis are are gonna be the teams that make the playoffs. Colorado vegas look amazing and saint louis seven four and one as the time of this recording. I think that's pretty good. And then you've got minnesota anaheim ducks arizona and san jose all within a game of five hundred and the kings obviously with a four game losing streak struggling if they lose two more to minnesota puts a pretty big gap between minnesota and the kings.
