Alaska's Salmon are Shrinking

"Year salmon come home to Alaska's frigid rivers to mate, lay their eggs and die. The. State Salmon runs are some of the biggest in the world but over the past few decades, those big salmon runs have featured ever smaller. Salmon. Talk to people up there has been fishing for a long time and they're definitely able to tell you that we just don't see those really large old salmon used to see Christa a post doctoral fellow at the University of Alaska Fairbanks oaken colleagues at the University of California Santa Cruz, and elsewhere analyzed records of fish size. Going back to the nineteen fifties they included data on some twelve point, five, million, salmon, each of which had. To be measured by someone from the Alaska Department of fish and game, and there's no question about it. Salmon have shrunk sockeye salmon today are two point one percent shorter than their ancestors chum salmon are two point four percent shorter and Coho or three point three percent shorter Chinook or king salmon showed the greatest declines at eight percent. That's an average difference of more than two inches in length. The study is in the journal Nature Communications. The researchers haven't nailed down the exact reasons behind this trend, but they're analysis suggests that climate change and competition with wild and hatchery raised salmon, both play a role. They also discovered that much of the change in body size is due to fish returning from the ocean at a younger age now than in the past. Oak, says fish could be returning earlier because they're reaching maturity faster for some reason or because the ocean has become a riskier place for older salmon to survive what could be happening is the That otherwise would have returned large old. Just making. Whatever the cause this size shift has massive ramifications for people and the Environment Oak and her team calculated that catching smaller fish may have already slashed the value of Alaska's Commercial Salmon Fisheries by twenty one percent. It's also likely reduced the food available to subsistence fishers, many of whom reliance stores of salmon to get them through the long harsh winter by as much as twenty six percent. On the ecological side, the researchers estimated that smaller fish sixteen percent fewer eggs, which could depress salmon populations in the future and the Salmon Bring Twenty eight percent fewer nutrients into the watersheds were they spun according to the study after they breed and die kirk actually fertilize. Freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems with these marine derived nutrients that are really important and that used by all kinds of animals like bears and songbirds even taking up into trees with no single factor to blame for shrinking salmon there's no fix says, but there are still plenty of fish in the sea they're just smaller than they used to be.

"Back to chance. He's great outdoors and who's on the phone? My body joke. Akron Nature's image taxidermy. Hey, Joe, How are you? I'm doing really good. Chauncey. How are you? I'm you know, having a little fun here this morning, but, you know, I wanted it. I haven't had you on and I apologize in a couple of years. But you are my go to taxidermist, and so many people have caught big salmon. I've seen some killer perch. I've seen large mouth bass people sent me photos of wall Eye from Lake buried the chain. I've seen Big Pike out of Televen. I've seen musky early in this. Well, It's kind of that Muskie weather now, but earlier in the summer, Muskie I mean, if somebody catches these fish and goes, you know I want this is a trophy. I want to put it on the wall. What should I think about? Or what should I do? Is my question to you. Okay, There's really two types. The mountain One is the replicas into its skin, Mom. What's category tease with Lake Michigan will go with the trout salmon off Lake Michigan. I do not recommend doing a skin mouth at any fish out of the lake trout salmon are very oily, very freaky. Could I do a skin Mount? Yes, The longevity is short because we cannot control the grease and oil That's in the past. It's in the fish. I highly recommend doing a replica. A replica lasts forever. It'll look just like your fish. No one will ever know. It's a replica unless you tell them. The replicas today are 1000 times better than the replicas 20 years ago. I don't have the skills. They have teeth that I have everything with, um You pretty much if you're catching salmon Trump, you want to do it? With the cell phones. Nowadays, I highly recommend take several pictures of that fish colors of change. You want to turn around the the colors of the fish and the sun requesting on the fish makes a difference. So Take some with with the sun or against the sun so that I can really see the color in the details and your fish is gonna look exactly like that. Cool. The 2nd 1 would be you Take your son. Answer your grandchild, my grandson out fishing Beckett, and we turned around and he got a nice movie. We really I just didn't want to do that is it? But if you catch a fish you go. Wow, This is my son's first fish. My grandson's first U turn around. I would Take care of one when you get it in. I didn't get it in a cooler. Don't put it on a stringer. Don't let it hang around the dark all day. Take a few good pictures. Put it in a corps on ice when you get home. Wrap it in a wet towel. What a west. How does when it's frozen? It will protect that will keep the colors of keep the fins from breaking up with that in a plastic bag and freeze it. And then you turn around and you won't get water all over when I get it When I opened it up, he mostly colors. Yes, picture always helps for me. Paint mess fish. With that same thing with master while I stuff like this really turned out Nice. I've got to agree with you on the Replicas. Because I have seen people who had a King Salmon mounted a couple of years ago or the head just starts to look a little funky to me. Yes, that's degrees coming out the oil I mean, I helped the mayor nearly Memorial work back in 1978. And before I really got in taxidermy. That's how I got started. But the head of security I mean the skin back and no holdup, but the head priest keeps out and it just starts starts seeing that nasty look to the face. Don't look Chris. That's why I highly recommend the replicas. Same thing with the must eat the big Northern Big one's goal. Let them breathe and do a replica. Give 100% guarantee interruptus. If you really don't like it, you don't have to take it. Now the And one of the things I have to say this When? When you talked to a taxidermist? You're not talking to a taxidermist, Everybody. You are honestly talking to an artist. Because it's how they paint how they the tricks of the trade the years of experience. And how do they make that? Look just like that photo? How do they make that color just blend in so well. You're not going to get that, you know, even a skin mounted fish when he takes the skin off of a fish. There's no color in it. He's gotta put off color, backto it and choices. Good. You know, Taxidermist truly is an artist and When you look at somebody, and and they're working, you go. Whoa! Then you know you've got an artist. Remember that? You know, there's a very good text himself. There. I won awards at ST Mansell world and there's some guys that are start now. There's good you don't you look in the pricing is different. I've been around for a long time. Me and you go back to when we were young. Yeah, Yeah. You really want it really want it the less for a long time. Pay the money getting attacked and it works. A lot of people think that color in a skin mouth is on top of the scale. This is what's hard about paintings of fish. Color and a fish is actually underneath. You take a scale off its crystal clear it through colors on bail. We've got to replicate what it would look like coming through the scale. Yeah, it makes complete sense. It makes complete sense and and one like I said, the more you've got somebody that the better it is. You know, somebody pulled. There's all that you know you could have amount or the fishes is sitting on the wall horizontally, but I've seen mounts. Where, uh, you know My dream is to get a stringer of jumbo perch and have him on a good day. Yeah, that's what I like. And I would love to see a stringer. Of jumble perch hanging. You know? Vertically. I like they're on a stringer. And just, you know, so it's like that's kind of a neat thing to see. I mean, so you don't have to just have a fish. They're dependent on what you're looking for, and you've got a price things out. You can make a fish look really cool. Or you can, you know, have a jumping out of a thing and stuff that Joe Cochran has done. Ladies and gentlemen will knock your socks off period. End of sentence. Don't even go any further. And I think I did a wallet for you for one of the partners of something you don't have to split decision wall. You could do a table mountain to replicate. What I do is I use a real nice wanna over Put the drift with coming up on. As I say. I believe it was a wide where he's underwater in the middle around stuff. That brings creativity to the art. Yeah, I mean, it was. It was a 29 31 a half inch wall Eye from Tampere Lake. And I mean it. It was actually it's now in a glass case when they bring it out at its sport shows because everybody's touching it. They want One thing I would stress out anybody better you give me the fish. The better. You get it back. You been beated up? Don't you know that's why they wrap it in a wet towel, Put it in a plastic bag and freeze it. It doesn't matter if it's a tear duct or anything. You must take care of it. Because the better I get it, The better you get it back. Exactly. Exactly. Um, So if you know what I'm just gonna recoup here if you're taking a picture for.

"The any AC national monument and preserve gets the fewest visitors of any national park, and it boasts no rangers. No trails and no waiting in line. All the more reason Christopher Solomon went out of his way to hike a few summers ago. Chris, welcome great to be here. Is this actually a national park or what's the technicality they're. Technically Rick any act check national. Monument and preserve is its name and it. It is not a national park, but it is the least visited unit of the four hundred and one properties in the national park system, so nobody goes there white. Why do they even bother thinking of it? As part of the system you, you'd think that the least visited might be something like the Martin Van Buren national birthplace right, but no It's Antioch Chat in two. Thousand Twelve Anne check had nineteen visitors last year might have picked up to a hundred or so and you were there with how? How many people in your party three of us three of us now? Where is it and how do you get? There visualizes for me if you look at the map of Alaska Alaska? has this big tale that kind of frozen, fourteen hundred mile tail, that wags westward at come shotgun, and that's the Aleutian islands and the base of that tail is the Alaska Peninsula, and that's where any act check. You know if I wanted to go there next week. Where would I fly? What I just rent a car and drive there, or how'd I get that so one of the reasons rick? Not, very popular is it's hard to get to from Seattle where I live. It took US three flights to anchorage to King Salmon to Port Heiden which is just an airstrip built for World War Two in the middle of nowhere on the Bering Sea and then we backed packed with sixty five pound packs for twenty two miles to reach the centerpiece of the the. The National Monument, which is a gorgeous volcanic crater, so ease of access is not one of its selling points. Is it worth the trouble? Yeah, I was thinking about this on the drive over here and how to summarize it. I have had the good fortune to travel all over the world as a travel writer, I was with a photographer who shoots pictures all over. Over the world and beautiful places we agreed we'd never seen a place as unique as okay. How can you write in? Your article is just gorgeous about this that it was mind-bending. Lee Gorgeous is the desolation that's part of it, or what makes it better than just going to any national park, so maybe to convey what it's like I need to tell you just. Just a little bit about its geologic in human history, which is more interesting than it sounds about the time. The Egyptians were ruling the world. A seven thousand foot volcano blew its top with a with a force of ten thousand nuclear bombs ruined the bigger eruptions we we know of, and then the volcano collapsed on itself and created a crater that could swallow Manhattan. That crater filled with water, so it looked like crater lake national park, then that lake blew out in his biblical flood in over the next couple thousand years, this lost worlds was sort of created inside that crater, and it just went kind of unnoticed, except for the native peoples for thousands of years until nineteen thirty, when this man called the glacier priests arrived, and the Glacier priest was father, Bernard, how he's one of these Jesuit priests who was cut from the old cloth, swashbuckling sort of Jesuits, and he, he barnstorm all over the forty-ninth state, having these wild adventures by Bush plane. Plane by dog sled is write ups win the Saturday Evening Post and the National Geographic and in nineteen thirty, he wrote about visiting Antioch Check, and he described it as paradise found this this lost world where orchids bloomed in the volcanically warmed soil, and the rabbits were gigantic, and they came up and walked right up to his crew, which was a bunch of the Santa Clara football players, and and they felt bad killing them to eat them, but they did anyway. Did you read his writing the in preparation for your trip so I? Did I read about his writings about the great? Great Moon Crater of the earth called it, and then what happened is he wanted to go back the next year nineteen, thirty one and any act check blew up again, and he goes back and talks about it no longer in these Milton, s Kinda paradise found terms, but but in this dante-esque hellish terms describes himself peering into this blackened inferno, and then they go into the crater a couple months after it's blown up again, and they nearly die of poisonous gasses, and they're, and they're put their beans on a funeral and their beans Boileau, and they shove a thermometer in the ground. Ground thermometer explodes, and it's just this hellish wild landscape. That's the setting we go back eight years later. Just kinda see what it's like, and a lot of the soot has washed off from that nineteen thirty one explosion, but it has this kind of Sier Flinty beauty desolation sublime.

"Three CO crowns chickens. Sheep fish it is another animal. Yeah yeah no more animals you fly. Oh pigs will good for them not act they would disagree seventy for them So I guess I will just go ahead and go second you go okay so my today is about animals else that eat meat. You might know what they're called herbivores right so apparently Classifications vacations of animals mean. Absolutely nothing I mean they do mean something so herbivores generally are animals that have physical adaptations that allow them to eat and digest plant matter so specialized lies teeth or specialized stomachs those kinds of things but while they primarily eat plant matter. That doesn't mean that they only eat plants. We've observed a number of species eating meat or other animal products and there are a bunch of videos that have made the rounds online of like a deer eating baby bird or a cow just like straight up nominee on a baby. Chicken says kind of disturbing are being. I laughed but just like them to think of account as being like well like eating grass. Just yeah but there's also been some research into this. So one team had cameras set up in Canada. I think for a different reason but they had observed snowshoe hares scavenging meat and so they intentionally quote deployed carcasses so they put one hundred and sixty one carcasses around found guilty and they found that the hairs had scavenged about twelve point four percent of them from a variety of different species including other hairs so they were not not above eating their own species Asher and they links meet which is their main Predator and they were also seen eating grouse feathers. I assume like intentionally not not just like as a byproduct of sticking your head inside the carcasses of of a grouse and they think that maybe they were just trying to get protein from that but not and another study in North Dakota had had cameras set up watching bird nests and had seen a bunch of different predators stealing eggs and whatnot from the nets but they said that white tailed deer. Put some other predators. It's a shame with how much they were rating these nests for eggs and grabbing baby birds right out of the nests higher up. Use Your wings. Birds come on so scientists think this might just be happening because of how hard it is to find food in the winters like just general food scarcity foreign the dears case they might be looking for specific nutrients to help grow their antlers. I guess they've also seen like a lot of deer gnawing on different bones but it seems to happen pretty frequently currently and it could just be a thing that many urban wars occasionally do. Because there's an opportunity to do it. And why not get extra calories much easier to get calories from meat then from grass and yes you need special adaptations like a wine can't get or a human can't get energy from grass but like proteins are part of what you're digesting digesting plant matter and they're not that different and meet than they are implants just accuser. They did point out that like deer like because of the teeth adapted for eating plants. Like they can't get through skin very well So that's like defenseless thing. Yeah yeah or scavenging corpses or stuff maybe. If dear had some teeth they'd be attacking that can be fun Okay well that's I'm sure that's what how carnivores happened. There were some ear and then there was one that was like my teeth are pretty sharp. I should go ahead and deep Jeff. Do they know anything about the gut bacteria. 'cause I imagine that eating corpses is not most pleasant thing for the Tom. I don't know it was mostly the hairs that I saw that were eating better scavenging from the corpses and all the other things that I saw were about out like various things eating live small birds. Mostly yeah so it was like very fresh rather not rodent trait their lattimore. Some crime which is to keep their babies to sometimes don't they. Yeah that's true. I mean auto rodents do that. It's like well I guess. A lot of rodents are also lake. Nick not necessarily just vegetarian. Or whatever and correct yeah. Do we classify Rabat's is at two quick. You think or it just seems like almost any before will be carnivores. Will I eat meat sometimes. The opportunity it's just hard to get usual eight but like you said it seems like Sarah said it seems like they would maybe suffer the same fate that we do when we meet like there would be something wrong in there but not if you have a real fresh air and say something okay. Everybody so salmon and what's is a fish it's a fish but it's also a caller. Oh being and salmon is so connected with the color pink that If Salmon is not pink or pink enough if people will be less interested in purchasing it now turns out that salmon become pink because of their diet of Krill and shrimp so these Krill and shrimp have pigments called Keratin. Lloyd's which carrots also have just why they're called Keratin awards particularly the Red Orange Pigment asked van them but most of our salmon. Now you go to. The store comes from farms not is not wild caught and those do not eat eat krill. They eat cable. That's made of mashed up fish and chicken fat and bunch of other stuff that they put into pellets and then they put it in there and that's what they eat and if they just ate the kibble without anything in there the meat would be white ish a little bit pink because because they're like a big strong fish but definite like the pink of Salmon and what they find is that people do not like to shop for White Salmon so as much as fifteen eighteen to twenty percent of a salmon farmers food budget goes to asked azan thin that is added to their food so that After anthem supplement can income from two places it can come from ground up shrimp or it can be synthesized so you take petrochemicals and you do science to it and you make ask Zanthosyn and then when you put that into the salmon feed the people who make Esta Zanthosyn have of course done a bunch of studies to figure out how much a variety of pink weakness is worth to the average consumer and so they actually have a tool called the Salamo fan. Like it's like the you know the color swatches that that you get painting your room and you hold it up. It's like a fan. You're fanning out and you hold it up to the salmon and you can see where on the Pinkney scale. The salmon falls on the end of. It's like below twenty. Six people will not buy it on any price okay and functionally tastes. It's the same now. There might be some in health benefits to ask Zanthosyn but like very minimal. This and it doesn't change the taste at all. It is just about the color and even when told that it's it's just about the color of people will not buy salmon. That is not pink except that there is a species of salmon. The King Salmon that occasionally really has a mutation and it makes it a white king so five percent of Wild Alaskan King Salmon aren't able to process the pigments and that makes them white and so these were popular with natives because they were rare and they're like this is like a cool like we caught a special one but for a long longtime they were sold for a lot less because people there was dislike pink thing but now people have like caught on their special. So wild white salmon are worth more now whereas farmed white salmon are unmentionable bad to the point where they spend tons of money basically Ziegler dying. The Salmon Pink from the inside humans are so bleak. I think I would do I. I would be more inclined to buy pink Salmon. I don't give a shit about salmon. Who why who's conditioned media care so much about that? It's just what Salmon I like. Salmon is pink. There's a color in the cradle. A CRAYON box salmon. I did know about the color thing that they added. Color to Farm Salmon because I used to once upon a time worked in the meat department. The fact that came up told us at me was at the beginning. Yeah these are the two do things I thought I had a false sense of security going into research for this episode because I was like I worked in a meat department. I know something about meet. This is going to be. It's such a hard time. Finding Things Caitlyn called it classic Meat Department Swagger Rent a little bit about the same thing happening just with regular cuts of meat like they put a chemical into is true. They put chemical in with that when the air seal the meat to go pink carbon monoxide. Von It doesn't matter better. If it's not Pink Lake Ray won't by booking fresh air a you can treat kinda sad looking meet with carbon monoxide and okay freshens at right. Ada sounded not true to me because I can't picture a grocery store having a bunch of carbon. We wouldn't have guessed probably for the best so we've got curb vars that are eaten meat and we've got dying fish pink from the inside you guys rated cast your votes three to do one hank coming back. Sorry Steffens I knew about the dears already though. Yeah I.

"Virginia Omega out of compliance and penalize them so that Fisheries Virginia wanted itself. Find yes absolutely and So that not a wilbur. Ross to his credit rule in favor of the commission and shutdown that fishery now that doesn't really mean anything because officials shut down the winter. Anyway this just happened in December but what it means is that now. The state has to come into compliance. And there's going to be a penalty for all those fish extra that it caught out of the Chesapeake Bay is going to get reduced that from this overall quota now I think they ought to be kicked out of the Chesapeake Bay altogether. I'd love to see this type of fishing. End If bait fisherman wanted to Manhattan great mean we've so wiped out herring. Fishery is a lot of lobstermen in Maine and other places are looking for other Bateman heinous logic one for that all for using that s awesome Asian cart going up to Maine for Lobster Bay sitting. Yeah so you're saying like that small scale stuff like that. But you're saying like the industrial harvest. Yeah exactly I mean. These big reduction fisheries which were you grind them up and Terminal Terminal Oil and pellets. And it's just doesn't make any sense now in the or the the crazy thing on this too is that you Omega decided during this process is to add political weight tits cause to get us off certified on the Marine Stewardship Council `sustainable which doesn't make any sense for hosted reasons. We fought that you know they got it and the Atlantic and they got it in the Gulf. And there's even a catch limit in place in the Gulf Muniz totally wild west down there and you know so. It's just crazy so anyway. But what what it has done has galvanized the fish community. The recreational fish community behind this caused we won on the compliance fight in the Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay. Yeah Yeah we'RE GONNA win. I think on ecological management changing the framework and then we need to go down to the Gulf and put hard get large Kesselman someplace down there K.. Phil Pub Mine Manageable. Mind's gone a lot long time. Man comes down to thumbs down so we thought this thing was you know pretty much dead and put nails in the coffin a few years ago hard to track. It's been hard to follow. Yeah so issue fatigue well some of that too but this a things this is one thing. Where is a sea change from last three years? So the bomb ministration I think to their credit. Basically put up some very very hard sideboards on any mind that could be developed at area which give people not just real quick. What when people say Pedal Man? What are they talking about? They're talking about where with one of the world's largest open pit mines at the headwaters and a golden compromise headwaters of the two most productive Sockeye Salmon rivers in North America. The Que- Jack in The New York and the world in the world so there is at the base the backbone of a half billion dollars a year commercial oh fishery which it creates. A surface lake of highly creates a it would create a surface lake of highly contaminated water they would have to be maintained in perpetuity the fault zone behind behind a you know an empowerment structure that this water would never be cleaned correct and you would need to keep it in place because should it and not only that because of what would eventually be the size of this mind. You're going to have to put in not only of roads and harbors arbres but you know utilities bisque power plant and you're going to open up an entire area to you know other impacts so this is like from Moose Honors Salmon Fisherman Bear. Everybody hates this. A couple of people except for some Canadian speculators who want to basically this northern Dynasty musty which is a company that was pushing this once essentially sort of to make a bunch money on this thing solid off to somebody else and get out of business so anyway it's was on on life support then President has the story has it and I have no idea if this is true. President steps on his way back from North Korea stops to refuel in Anchorage. Alaska Alaska Governor who likes the mind like any development project spend time with them on Air Force. One trump goes back to DC tells. EPA To make this thing happen and the corps or of engineers and all of a sudden corp engineers which takes six years for a restoration project to do the permeating in a place. Like Florida or Louisiana is Oh has never moved faster on any project ever and we're going to basically moving creening toward approving the permit on this in. You're right about now now. They've kicked back ACA few months. Because everybody including the state of Alaska Cleaning Lisa Murkowski including department the Interior have said Whoa. Your analysis is woefully inadequate. We're not looking all these potential impacts so but we still think the corps of Engineers are going to issue a permit which means litigation is going to begin but would also means is that any other mining company Northern Dynasty Megan infusion of cash because stock price is bound to go up that point and it makes thing far more viable than spend any time in the past fifteen years. Yeah I don't want say about this crazy about pebble mine not gonNa tell you about it. Okay sister-in-law it's brutal thing you're talking about a landscape where you couldn't maintain a Kiddie pool out there from overflowing or rupturing for any amount of time. Yeah I mean the the groundwater is on the surface of the surface water comes down frickin. daleus blue buckets constantly active fault zone. I mean you have volcanoes erupting within seventy five miles so but in listen there are a lot of places is an Alaska to make total sense. Reminding there are a lot of really good minds and Alaska. This is not about being anti mining. This is about about the worst place could ever pick to put a mine. Is You know top Bristol Obama. I'm curious to see I don't say this lightly and I wouldn't say about a lot of things but I'm curious to see what role that civil. Disobedience would come into play were they to actually go in and break ground and start extracting resources. It's become such a line in the sand issue for such a broad array of individuals from the native community native Alaskans Sportsman Commercial. Firemen analysts commercial fisherman. I wonder if it would be that there would be I just feel like if like this would be the kind of thing that inspire civil disobedience. It's so hard though. It's like look at where it is You know like the winner. Population of King Salmon Alaska is like very very if you know the summer population in anything that would probably be hard to make human chain out of that too. No no but it's like if if we can't protect I think people look as Lyon saint issue because 'cause if you can't protect Bristol Bay if it's not worth protecting Bristol Bay so that means nothing is that wasn't good enough. Yeah yeah a lot of people like okay. We're just we're done. Yep because nothing sacred anyway this is gonNA is. I don't think they're going to be breaking ground anytime soon. This is going to be extended litigated. If the permit is issued so you know in running around the clock and hope you got more friendly administration administration and that will actually do something good for Bristol or the current administration will change tack which is entirely possible. Yeah yeah he listens to public opinion on a lot of issues just gotta hit him on the twitter feed twenty twenty outlook thumbs in dumbs. Out Up down get some stuff done really. Yeah I mean it's going to feel bill. You got the noise. And they're not noise fear. Obviously you have to things that are going to make progress on anything difficult impeachment and the election progress on anything anything. Do you wish the impeachment hadn't happened just because it makes. Is Everything so hard to do something we're getting into. I'm not going to get into that one so I just think that it is what it is. Now I gotta deal with. We deal with that. In other words the the rules are set up. Basically the impeachment. Sounds like they're going to convene at one o'clock every day so which means we have some period in the morning to get a little bit of business done basically. Yeah it's different distraction. So I know that I'll just tell you with this isn't wet talking to some you talk. It's been frustrating about this thing is going through something that you know won't happen. He's not going to happen. That's all it's feels to me like like let's say I was GONNA I'm going to dig a hole in cows like No matter how how much did I will fill that hole back in and I can get I can guarantee you that I will fill the hole back in beverly anyway and spend a bunch of money doing it go on so again. You could be right. But it is what it is and we're going to work around rounded and so I am right. Yeah so he didn't electioneer. You really have until May to get stuff done and then everything gets too you tied up with politics and then you have another window after the election until the new congress in some radical stuff can happen during that time so the first of all you're trying trying to clear the deck of a Lotta easy stuff in right now in the next month or two and I think that you know I'm sorry real quick. How much time? Okay the the impeachment is going on now or you know the Senate trials going to no not yet but it will start some time soon. So how much so. Forget that. Part of it How much time of activity do we have? Before the election cycle just throws everything into chaos and of May and and then everybody just thinking about that. Yeah I mean you may some few things odds and ends get done but basically it's just still everybody's out campaigning as to political so everything gets put on hold hold until after the election in which case you when you come back and Butler stuff gets done between that first week in November and the new Congress. Guess whether it's an outgoing whether it's an hour going administration or an empowered administration does need to worry about reelection. Yeah you're the dynamic of what happens with the Senate what happens with the House. What happens to the president but at a minimum? You know it's the place to get a bunch of stuff done yeah and Because you have retiring members and there are a lot of them on both sides. Yeah who are going to say all right. This is a chance so I don't actually have to be political. I can do what's right for change. I don't run for re-election Joe and you know.

She has some native American heritage. The president has long claimed Warren was not telling the truth if she gets the nomination. Where I was going to have her tested. I'll only do it if I can test her personally. Okay. That will not be something. "Saying the king of Saudi Arabia denied to him any knowledge of what happened to Washington Post journalist, Jamal kashogi, President Trump today shared the theory that rogue operators may have murdered the columnist ABC's. Aaron Katersky joins us and Aaron CNN is reporting that the Saudis will admitted in a statement that it was an interrogation gone wrong. That ended with kashogi death inside the Saudi consulate and Turkey. If it's true that the Saudis are saying that the death was the work of interrogators that went rogue. Maybe there was something that they told President Trump in conversation this morning involving the president king salmon, and and the president didn't lead on what what else he might have been told or what he may have known, but the Saudis if this report is true are are pushing a theory that show he was not meant to be killed. But rather was meant to be interrogated inside their consulate in Istanbul. What this explanation might do. Mike. Is take the burden of blame off of the crown prince Mohammad bin Salman and put it on these rogue killers. But let's talk about the power structure in Saudi Arabia would anything of this magnitude happened where two planes are flown in an interrogation gets underway. And the crown prince wouldn't know anything about it or the king would know anything about it. I think it would be highly suspect if there was a dueling power center in Saudi Arabia that that somehow carry this out. But I guess that's the explanation of a rogue killing that this was supposed to be an interrogation maybe even an interrogation that led to his kidnapping and his return to Saudi Arabia. But without the caveat that that he was to be killed. I'm not sure this makes it any better or whether it's any more credible an explanation. They're still questions about where the body or pieces of it might be that hasn't been produced. And I thought it was noteworthy that. Calling it a rogue killers or suggesting rogue killers, the president appeared to come close to acknowledging what everyone presumes to be true that is dead. This is thirteen days later. How can they be believed and secretary of state Mike Pompeo is on his way there to is Don bul he is on his way left. This morning was sent by President Trump to hold face to face meetings. We're not sure specifically with whom or what? The outcome. The president may expect but clearly this is strained relations between Saudi Arabia and some of its western allies. Even if the president is steadfastly behind the Saudi Royal family there there are those from both parties in congress who are calling for a stronger stance out of Saudi embassy in Washington was supposed to hold a reception later this week to Mark Saudi national day that's been canceled without explanation, but perhaps an acknowledgement of some of the backlash over the the apparent death or presumed death of the Washington Post columnist what is it stake when it comes to our relationship whether a couple of things that the president has mentioned one is the sale of American weapons to Saudi Arabia. There is also American involvement in Yemen in in partnership with with Saudi Arabia that has elevated civilian death toll. And then there's of course, Saudi oil, and then that has been used as something of a threat in statements that the Saudi government is made to remind. Where economic sanctions have been imposed the Saudis have kind of picked up the slack. And they seemed to say that if there's too much Bush back that the Saudis would pack up their oil and go home ABC's Aaron Katersky. Thank you. Erin. Thank you. "SFO? Sada continue man a legend a way. Why? Why do I keep looking at because I'm ticked off? I've been expecting livery of things for over a week and UPS has moved them from the custom center over in Shanghai. And I'm getting ticked off about it. That's why I keep looking at the phone. I keep waiting for movement from UPS, and it's been over there for a week. I guess I sometimes I get obsessed with this stuff. I'll get an alert when there's any changes the deliveries app. It's a great app. Don't don't get confused. My beef is with UPS. I know this stuff is washed. That's what it is. And they're just trying to cover up for it. Anyway, you people are observant out there. I got another Email rush. Could you explain to me this journalist named kashogi kashogi, and I'll be if you. I'll be glad to tell you what I know about this. And it is it is somewhat. It is somewhat. Fascinates name is Jamal kashogi that the president of the United States involved in this. Now, Trump is being openly asked about it. And it has to do in many ways with with our newfound relationship is Saudi Arabia based on the fact, we no longer depend on them for oil now Jamal Khashoggi is Saudi. I don't know if he's related to Adnan kashogi common kashogi is as a Saudi or Arab name. Adnan kashogi was a famous arms runner made famous as a celebrity by. Lifestyles of the rich and famous, but the guy was an arms merchant. He was an arm's dealer, and that's the source of his wealthy which is made to look like a jet setting party animal by Robin Leach. So whether whether jamarcus Shoghi is related to him, and I could eat find out just habit. Jamal kashogi is a critic. Of Mohammed bin Salman, Mohammad bin Salman is the crown prince in Saudi Arabia. His father is the king king. Solomon. He is the brother of the late deceased king King, Abdullah, their father grandfather started the house of Saud. They are the Royal family. The crown prince each of these guys have many sons, there are constant battles for power within the Royal family. The crown prince is the chosen son is the air. Now Mohammed bin Salman is not the oldest son of king, salmon, but he has been designated the crown prince, meaning he will be the next king as such Mohammed bin Salman has been trying theoretically to reform the so the the Saudi economy and to take it away from being strictly petrol and oil focused because the world is expanding in ways that the Saudis are not involved in one of the things that Mohammed bin Salman has been doing has been traveling the world and making friends in the United States. He spent a lotta time in Silicon Valley he's gotten to know, his wined and dined the Google guys. He's wined and dined the Facebook guys spend a lot of time. Apple he wants to build a brand new city out of nothing in Saudi Arabia and make it a tech center. He's thirty two. If he takes off the Arab garb, he looks just like your average Ronald guy. Fairly attractive short little stocky. But he represents if he's being truthful major reforms he is the guy who has opened up driving to Saudi women. He is the guy who wants to relax. All kinds of cultural rules on on Saudi women and open up speech to them. Open up being able to drive go places on their own without male accompaniment is made him quite controversial. He also last summer not this passive last night. It was this past summer. He arrested the elite of the elite of Saudi wealth some of them even among the Royal family and took over the Ritz Carlton hotel in Riyadh and that became a giant jail. And he put all these guys in jail demanding a certain percentage of their wealth on the basis, they had stolen it. Due to corruption and connections and source. He's made a lotta enemies. Well, Jamal kashogi has as a journalist doesn't by any of this and has been running around openly criticizing Mohammed bin Salman. Even running stories suggesting that Mohammed bin Salman father. The king has grown so upset with his son. The crown prince that he's taking toys and power away from him. This reportedly has not sat well with the crown prince, Mohammad bin Salman. Despite the reforms in Saudi Arabia. You still don't get to run around and criticize the government and keep your head..
