It involves checking in on the penguins who we've already paired and their chicks. You know taking their temperatures as well as any changes or the consistencies in their environment. As part of our goal is to create the right environment or move for these birds to create relationships that will lead to ensuring their population. I'd like to a little bit more about this. So you are introducing penguins to each other so that they can make families. How do you go about doing that right. So basically what we're doing is trying to match penguins and they don't always want to match but Eventually that usually do interesting fact. Penguins don't actually mate for life but it doesn't mean they don't still have preferences For for each other. See and would you say you. Can you tell if a relationship is going to work out or can you tell right away. If they're not getting along you can tell so like One example would be when one of our penguins. Like the one deep the back a little bit only cross in the back with their faces turning away from the camera crosses the back right. Yeah that's right. I had fun and then the lip. Let's say the color was fabulous. It really was. It was basically your. I call it your lipa better. Yeah it was beautiful mauve pink. It was gorgeous. It's really nice. But i just realized very quickly that i don't know how to shape a lip and we all realize that and one side of carolina and i was like i'm going to do a bigger live. I'm going to go overboard. Yeah one side. I went way over in one side. I went over but in a different direction. Yeah it was. And this is sorta. It's of like harvey dent like to face batman villain one side got splashed with assets. One side. do your eyeliner. And you're oh this little thing around the side. I gotta go to fix it and you got you sat over correct. That's what i was trying to. I was trying to even out then. I tried to take down a notch and by doing that. I smeared it and so it created. But it's even her santona is even she doesn't have any melas discoloration gorgeous angel skinny and gorgeous eyebrows they are. They have somehow withstood the test of time. She didn't overclock them seven. But then we haven't touched them since they are incredible baby and all i did to them. I didn't even have to add any pencil. I use on sasi brow. Freeze feathered them up. And she literally looked caridad levin really hair adele levin in hurson. I went from glow. Extra back turned to the cam. Yeah dicara but still deepen the bat. You gave me the confidence to now no longer do pencil on my eyebrows. Because i'm like i always like. Why am i doing this. I have much. You don't know what i need is the flu. You have plenty of haired afloat. And now i'm just flew fan and you're right. I do need. Because when i was looted up there were like longs to trims i will say i did say you look like a king penguin because there were a couple long ones in there. That really were cockatiels. Ask but in a bad way but not like good. Yeah but it was really fun. And i also feel more confident about just eye-shadow in general. Yeah just a great man. Utah me that. Dr bergman you mentioned earlier how the females go away and leave for nine weeks and then they come back and when we see penguins. We certainly can't tell them apart from one another but they mate for life so in the sea of thousands of penguin dads and their eggs. The penguin mom knows exactly which chick is her check. And which mate is her mate a miracle. Actually when you think about it how do they tell king. Penguins have colonies of two hundred fifty thousand pairs. That's like a big human city and the chicks don't have ness they wander around so it'd be like being in a big city only you don't have a house so your parents will go off to work and they come back and you aren't in a house they've gotta find you. You could have gone anywhere. You could walk down the street three blocks. He could have gone off to see your grandma or something like that. How are they gonna find. You can guess how the penguins find each other in those circumstances. They know they're made song so they talk to their children when they know their mates voice so follow their mates voice very good very very good. That is exactly right. How many miles cannot pink rinse rams. They can swim a long way. For example there's one species of england. The fiordland crested penguin which is in new zealand. And it messed in a rainforest actually doesn't rest nest in snow Rainforest in seventy nine nest in trees. They're like little hobbits in the forest. When you say them but nobody knew where they went they would leave in december and they would be gone till the next june and nobody knew where they win and so they put these little satellite recorders on them and they followed them and they found that they they almost all the way to tasmania across the tasman ocean. It's hundreds and hundreds of miles and in fact they can swim about fifty miles a day and they're gone for months swimming about fifty miles a day. Is they're going after this break seating area so it's really quite amazing. Well you have seen so many different things with these eighteen species of penguins. How are they different from one. Another and how are all penguins exactly alike. Well not different from each other in that. Of course they have different physical characteristics. Their groups of them actually came penguin. Penguins temperate zone penguins the ones at the white and black stripes and then a couple of others that don't sit category Easily but they different personalities which i think is kind of fun as a couple species that are quite shy and will run away from you in high at the slightest movement that they see in you and there are some species like the royal penguin Incredibly friendly when i would get off abode visit them on the beach. There were fifty of them would crowd around and they would gather all around. Look at my camera and come right up and look at me and even climb on top of. Nfc walked down the beach Fifty penguins gathered around you in a big parade. You and the penguins. So they're they're different in personality as well as some of their physical characteristics but they all share the same thing they all are birds that do not fly. It's the only bird in the world that does not fly in they swim. They doubted for swimming. And they're underwater. Birds are penguins endanger will. Yes they are and they need our help very much. They need us to be attention to them. Eighteen species ten species are considered in danger of extinction so that means more than of all species are endangered in another four are considered near endangered. Which is another way of saying they kind of on the way toward endangerment things don't change we have to be careful ourselves about what we do because what we do affects their ability to survive even though they all live in a different hemisphere. No they all live far far away from us for example. There's a lot of fishing that goes on in the southern ocean because there's not much fishing the rest of the world now we've exhausted the In every time we take huge cloudy of fish out of the seven ocean. It makes it harder and harder for the for the penguins to survive. There's another big problem for penguins. And that's called climate change. And that's heating up. The oceans and penguins need cold water to survive and as the oceans heat up it just makes it harder and harder for penguins to ride. What can we do help. Penguins not go extinct one of the most important things you can do is to be careful when you buy when your parents by fish tell them to buy sustainably grown stace. It's very important because otherwise we're really making it almost impossible for penguin babies to grow up to adults. The kind of fish we eat is probably one of the important things in the other thing is to try to reduce our impact on climate change. Because that says huge huge problems. Dr charles bergman and our kids have a lot more questions you see paying ones in the zoo wire they tied. We might wonder why you're so big. They feel like they're just the right size. What species are we seeing in zoos. Mostly zoos you see madge alantic or african thing the Black and white stripes but they often. You'll often see king penguins which are big at right. Orange ear patches and one john the front of their chest or amber penguins. I think we have macaroni. Penguins here in albuquerque lucky. Yeah they're pretty neat looking really cool they have a big fluffy heritage of gold feathers. There can be able to survive in an dark vika. What makes them so special. When i was in antarctica. I've been to antarctica. Many times when i went particularly to see the emperor penguins. I found myself asking exactly that question because emperor penguins only penguin but actually stays in antarctica year round in. it gets very very cold. It gets fifty to sixty degrees below zero fahrenheit very cold winds about a hundred miles an hour and you wonder why are they they are. Why are they having their babies. They're but they're all they're adapted to it and they managed to do it. And i guess the main reason is they can find. Lots of food in the ocean is very rich ocean for food for penguins. That must be the reason. They are there as far as i understand. Penguins are unique species because the males of the penguin species raised. The checks is that are we. Is that correct. Well you kind of a stamp payment Different species have different ways of going about it but most species are what we would call monogamous that is dedicated to particular mate announced. Keep that made over several seasons. The emperor penguin is the pain one. That specifically does a lot of the raising of the check. And here's what happens. He has to stand the whole day if he lives down. The egg will come out. So that's one of the most unusual mating strategies child rearing strategies of any animal in the whole world. And then how long those babies stay with the mom and dad about two and a half months to grow up so they have to grow up pretty quickly because they're on. The ice in that ice will break up at summer comes and they have to be able to swim in fence themselves. In fact the parents will just leave the babies that a certain point the parents will just start off to swim in. The baby's guy got to figure out how to jump in the water and catch a fish on their own. How many babies do penguins produce at a time. But if you go to the galapagos sometimes you'd be lucky swim with penguins and when you swim with penguins you'll realize that they probably are looking at us in the water the way we look at them on lan based mustang. Why are those people not such good swimmer. They're such bad swimmers. But we're really good swimmers. Well there's a life goal for you to swim with penguins or even just swim as well as a penguin. "That's another really good all the penguins in the world except one lives in what is called the southern hemisphere. The part of the world below the equator so there are no penguins in the north where we live. There are no payments. You see a polar bear. You won't see penguins so penguins all live in southern hemisphere from the equator to the south me. And there's one penguin that it's actually found inland northern hemisphere that crosses the equator in only one and that one penguin is the galapagos penguin and there is one little colony of those winds found. Exactly one half mile north of the equator in the galapagos islands. And that's the only penguin that lives in the northern hemisphere to go see all eighteen species of penguins. You had to go to some pretty far flung places. Yeah i i have been to some very very very remote places places that you can only get to by special arrangement antarctica's very far away hard to get to an antarctica surrounded by an ocean which makes it even harder in in that ocean lots of little islands and some of those islands are the only place you can see a particular species of penguin. So you've got to figure out how to get to really far away islands. But they're beautiful. When it was higher it was a lot of fun adventures. I think i'm always surprised by penguins. They're so small when we see photographs of emperor. Penguins live down in antarctica. It just in my mind. I had always envisioned that. They were these huge animals. And then when i see them at zoo or somewhere in person they're actually pretty tiny little creatures. Aren't they well. The emperor penguin is three and a half feet tall to four. It can give me. It can get quite large when you see it in person it's strikingly big and it's closely related to the king penguin which is just about three theme and of the others are about two feet twenty inches to twenty four inches. So that's not a big not a big bird but they're not teeny like sparrows either. So it's all kind of relative. I guess you can say are penguins all related to each other. Yeah they're they're all they're all numbers. Less family called cintas. Could i so they are. They are definitely related by the way the ancestor paying when the the fossil in one of the big fossils fines for penguins from about sixty million years ago was a six foot tall penguin biggest bigger than a person. Watch the Stanley Cup final lost in the conference finals, missed the playoffs entirely. Reach the conference finals, got bounced in the first round and then won back to back Stanley Cups. So two Stanley Cup victories. One other parents Two conference final losses. First round exit and then one season without the playoffs. Does that to you sound like a dynasty. Because to me It doesn't Dynasty is not a word. I think should be thrown around. And should be reserved. For The truest sense of that word, And I don't think the Tampa Bay Lightning art We've had a dynasty. In the salary cap era. And it was the Chicago Blackhawks, who over their seven year stretch in seven is My arbitrary. I'm just trying to do apples to apples. Maybe you don't need that many years. Or maybe you need more. So the end if you think Tampa Bay's a dynasty The end of the Blackhawks dynasty gave way to the beginning of the Lightning dynasty. Doesn't mean that we can't have one dynasty going to another. But I just don't see the longer run by the Lightning. And say that's a dynasty. Certainly not when compared to Chicago. But the lightning don't have to be considered a dynasty. To be considered great. I think the real question To ask today is whether they are the greatest team of the salary cap era. And when I look at the salary cap era in the NHL I see really four teams that are deserving of being in this conversation. I feel like i got this. And you know what i'll if i don't got it all figured out with parenting. I got this. And i constantly feel like a mess enough. I don't know if you feel like that i get. Yeah no i get it. And it's it's just constant like i'm screwing up. I'm not doing this right. Oh my gotcha could done that better. I constantly second guess things with my kids and i wonder like handled that differently. And i it's like my biggest challenge in life. And i talked about my daughter going to college and stuff. That's the one thing. I always worry about in in my struggle is always like how i handle my kids. When i'm parenting. How would you rate yourself as a dad. Like what would you give yourself on a scale of like. If five were the highest in one were the lowest. What would you give yourself jeeze. I'd say three or four. "His climate change changing the sounds. We hear nature. I'm NPR chief meteorologist. Paul Hutler here with climate cast. Close Your eyes and listen to a spring day in Minnesota. That's the sound of nature coming alive again. We know many animals are adapting to climate change. Some are shifting range or habitat but changing environments may also be changing the sounds. Animals make science journalist and author. Emily anthems wrote about the changes for the New York Times. Emily welcome to climate cast. Thank you for having me. Why did you want to write about animal? Sounds and climate change precisely because it was such an unexpected effect of climate change. I came across a paper that outlined how climate change might alter the way. The whole planet sounds and that was in effect. I had not read about or thought about. Here's a sewn from your piece I love. Let's hear the King Penguin. Emily King Penguins can actually change their calls based on win conditions. Is that right and they do. If you've ever seen a documentary about penguins you may know they nest in these big large colonies and when one in the meeting pair goes off to get food and they come back. They have to find their mate in their chick and they do that through. Acoustic cues and if the wind is really strong it's hard for them to find and hear their partners but scientists have learned that they can adjust to these conditions by issuing more calls and they also draw their calls out. And what did you learn about the cookie? Frogs of Puerto Rico So researchers had known for several decades that these frogs vary by altitude. So if you start at the bottom of mountain where it's warmer. The frogs are relatively small. But as you go up the mountain of the frogs get bigger and their calls change along the way so the small frogs at the base of the mountain of these sort of tiny little squeaky calls and as the frogs get bigger and you travel up the mountain of the calls get sort of lower and deeper and slower but scientists have now found that as the temperature and weather conditions change halfway up the mountain. The frogs are now smaller than they used to be. Which means that they're calls are Sort of faster and squeak year. We know that the oceans are absorbing a great deal of the carbon that we're putting into the atmosphere and that makes our oceans more acidic but emily. I didn't know that shrimp snapped but found some Australian research on that. Yeah so to be clear. Not all species of shrimp Snap but there are some species known for really loud snaps that they make when they quickly closed their large claws. Scientists have found that as oceans. Get MORE ACIDIC. These snapping sound seemed to be getting quieter and quieter emily. Some people might be listening and thinking. Why do changes in how animals sound matter? What's the case for that one? Is that a lot of species. Use Acoustic cues to find mates and so one concern with the Puerto Rican frogs. We talked about. Is that if you have a call? That's changing but the animals say inner ear doesn't change then you could eventually get to a scenario where there's a mismatch there and animals can't hear potential mates calling. In the case of the shrimp larva alike fish larva used. These sounds to help themselves navigate and to find suitable habitats after they hatch in the instance of the penguins if they have to call longer and more frequently and louder in inclement weather than that takes energy. And it's already precarious to survive in the wild. If you have to put a lot more energy into trying to produce sounds that can be heard That can be costly from survival.
