"They include three king penguins aged 20 and older and three Humboldt penguins ages 7 to 13. How many all live in Singapore's jorong bird? They can drive at night now. Yeah. How many penguins did they try before they got this right? Why? Saying there's some penguins out there bumping into walls. They drill too deep, go right through the back of their head. My goodness. They've got it down. Really? Yes. And they just knew that right away. First try. I asked. When I first read about something that you had done chick. The lasik surgery? Yeah. And when I was reading about this and I asked my friend Earl about it, who's a doctor and about how because I read that they perfected it on dogs. Wow. And I thought, how do they know? Yeah. Bark once. They have machines that can look at the back of the eye and see the curvature, so they don't even have to test you. And you know, no, and when you go in to have your eyes examined, when the computer goes, and you can see perfectly real quick, that's the computer setting your prescription. And then they check it. They keep asking you questions, make sure the computer got it right. Those are different techniques from removing cataract. And you know, though, that eye correction was an accident, a glass factory blew up or something. Some guy, some guy. Crazy. So he had, I think it was he was on a lathe or something and something flew into his eye, and they took the badges off, he could see perfectly with that high. That's crazy. The trick, the trick is they can't go straight in. Are they blind you? They have to lift up that flap. Yeah. But they've got that down. But yeah, I think it's cool that they did it on penguins. Yeah. It is cool. Yeah, because, you know, we need penguins for, okay, we really don't need penguins. Yes,

"A character in the mercy. Watson books named francine and i love mercy watson. That's a good reason. I suppose all right oliver. Your first question will go to francine what is a typical day at work for you. Okay usually when i get to the aquarium. It involves checking in on the penguins who we've already paired and their chicks. You know taking their temperatures as well as any changes or the consistencies in their environment. As part of our goal is to create the right environment or move for these birds to create relationships that will lead to ensuring their population. I'd like to a little bit more about this. So you are introducing penguins to each other so that they can make families. How do you go about doing that right. So basically what we're doing is trying to match penguins and they don't always want to match but Eventually that usually do interesting fact. Penguins don't actually mate for life but it doesn't mean they don't still have preferences For for each other. See and would you say you. Can you tell if a relationship is going to work out or can you tell right away. If they're not getting along you can tell so like One example would be when one of our penguins. Frankie was bonding with the bird name. Sandra they took their nesting too far. And i i don't know if you know this bet. When couples nest they hoard rocks to protect their nests. All couples not just not just the penguin up and they started hoarding rocks from around the exhibit. Ooh yeah so that wound up actually crushing some of their eggs and so noon. I know one of the things we had to do was create a nesting box and a few token rocks. And once we did that they turned out to be really great parents. So you know they they do have their own personalities and it's kind of fascinating jaros. What are being wins personalities. Like that are happy to answer that. Because i think things have lots of personalities. Some penguins are very shy penguin colony yellow eyed penguin in new zealand. That runs away from you. You get anywhere near outages. They'll just go and run away and then there's another kind of penguin. Call the royal penguin. That is the most curious penguin of all in there on another island almost in antarctica. And they'll come right up to you if you walk down the beach. I've had fifty of them. Walking on the beach. Felt like i was there royal penguins and i felt like i was a king of the royal penguins being when they're very wonderful. The emperor penguins. They'll never very curious they come right up to you. I've actually had emperor. Penguins climb on top of me while i was lying on the ice at school. Did they just think you were a speed bump or something like that. Well i think they're curious and they want to figure out who you are and so they come up in ten pekka you poke at your boots and i happen to be lying down on the ice photographing a different penguin and it jumped up on my boots. Wow it must be very curious to meet. Yeah will they don't see people very often so in fact we were wearing colors. That looked a lot like. There's will kind of yellow jackets with black hands. And i think they may have thought we were kind of strange mutant penguins or something find out. Where were you know someone needed that. I guess are seeing wins. There are mutant penguins. There's one that was just discovered this month on south georgia islands in king penguin. Normally they're gray and black with white tummies orange highlights but it's all white with a kind of yellow body. It's a strange strange penguin. Wait does this. Mean that. Ari beauty bigwood with digest. But what is there one. This is for seen sometimes. The most can be messy. What is grossing that ever happened to. You said this was really early on training. I was an intern over at the smithsonian zoo and i was in charge of cleaning the penguin habitat and the penguins. Were really cute and i had just read this paper. How penguins really like human contact. So i went to hug. One of the pink wins but Again this was very early in my career. And i wasn't aware that it was multi pain and i you know i just going to say. I learned some really valuable lessons about what. The penguin body secretes during their multi process. And that was that was pretty chris. there's ooh what happened while the actual multi process this is this is weird is called catastrophic team which i think will help you imagine how gross it might be The ra lot of of the feathers and there was a smell that took a really long time to get out of my hair and my clothes. It wasn't it wasn't go. Have you ever been tricked by pain and high school right. You wanna hear this. High school tanglin came out to me and said hey lisa. We want you to be on the cheerleading team. Great i love cheerleading. Went there after school and guess what. It wasn't the cheerleading team. It was the cheer booing team the team. I don't like that and don't trust. Penguins story is horrible. I yes yes believe everything you hear from pain. Have i know it might not be the case but have either view experts ever been tricked by penguin. I have to think about that. And yes i think in a way i could say i was tricked by penguin. Okay one time africa. We were working with baby. Penguins lever wayne them and measuring them. The baby african penguin and you have to be careful with them. Because they'll try to bite you and things like that when they don't want you to hold them and they'll try to slap you with their flippers. So i was watching those. But what i didn't realize is that their number one weapon is it. They'll aim their bottom at you and coupons color. Diphu her question. It was fish colored because it's long stinky street. they're able to projectile poop. They can shoot their poop. Four feet in distance so they really are good shots with poop. Shall we move onto the next question. I don't think we can but we can try to come back from that one. This is for both of you. What is your favorite kind of being winning. Why he wants to start. or why. don't i start okay. My very very favorite is a chick. An emperor penguin chick. Because i think they're the cutest animal babies in the world. They haven't all fussy gray body and they have a black cap that looks like a helmet white cheeks with big black eyes and it looks like they're wearing jammies. That's cute my favorite is the mantle. Corean pink win and they are.

"Guests differ yellow gold. Right here on the children's hour with penguin day. We're talking with dr charles bergman. He is a penguin expert. Dr bergman you mentioned earlier how the females go away and leave for nine weeks and then they come back and when we see penguins. We certainly can't tell them apart from one another but they mate for life so in the sea of thousands of penguin dads and their eggs. The penguin mom knows exactly which chick is her check. And which mate is her mate a miracle. Actually when you think about it how do they tell king. Penguins have colonies of two hundred fifty thousand pairs. That's like a big human city and the chicks don't have ness they wander around so it'd be like being in a big city only you don't have a house so your parents will go off to work and they come back and you aren't in a house they've gotta find you. You could have gone anywhere. You could walk down the street three blocks. He could have gone off to see your grandma or something like that. How are they gonna find. You can guess how the penguins find each other in those circumstances. They know they're made song so they talk to their children when they know their mates voice so follow their mates voice very good very very good. That is exactly right. How many miles cannot pink rinse rams. They can swim a long way. For example there's one species of england. The fiordland crested penguin which is in new zealand. And it messed in a rainforest actually doesn't rest nest in snow Rainforest in seventy nine nest in trees. They're like little hobbits in the forest. When you say them but nobody knew where they went they would leave in december and they would be gone till the next june and nobody knew where they win and so they put these little satellite recorders on them and they followed them and they found that they they almost all the way to tasmania across the tasman ocean. It's hundreds and hundreds of miles and in fact they can swim about fifty miles a day and they're gone for months swimming about fifty miles a day. Is they're going after this break seating area so it's really quite amazing. Well you have seen so many different things with these eighteen species of penguins. How are they different from one. Another and how are all penguins exactly alike. Well not different from each other in that. Of course they have different physical characteristics. Their groups of them actually came penguin. An emperor penguin there are crested. Penguins ones with the yellow feathers on their heads becomes fiscus. Penguins temperate zone penguins the ones at the white and black stripes and then a couple of others that don't sit category Easily but they different personalities which i think is kind of fun as a couple species that are quite shy and will run away from you in high at the slightest movement that they see in you and there are some species like the royal penguin Incredibly friendly when i would get off abode visit them on the beach. There were fifty of them would crowd around and they would gather all around. Look at my camera and come right up and look at me and even climb on top of. Nfc walked down the beach Fifty penguins gathered around you in a big parade. You and the penguins. So they're they're different in personality as well as some of their physical characteristics but they all share the same thing they all are birds that do not fly. It's the only bird in the world that does not fly in they swim. They doubted for swimming. And they're underwater. Birds are penguins endanger will. Yes they are and they need our help very much. They need us to be attention to them. Eighteen species ten species are considered in danger of extinction so that means more than of all species are endangered in another four are considered near endangered. Which is another way of saying they kind of on the way toward endangerment things don't change we have to be careful ourselves about what we do because what we do affects their ability to survive even though they all live in a different hemisphere. No they all live far far away from us for example. There's a lot of fishing that goes on in the southern ocean because there's not much fishing the rest of the world now we've exhausted the In every time we take huge cloudy of fish out of the seven ocean. It makes it harder and harder for the for the penguins to survive. There's another big problem for penguins. And that's called climate change. And that's heating up. The oceans and penguins need cold water to survive and as the oceans heat up it just makes it harder and harder for penguins to ride. What can we do help. Penguins not go extinct one of the most important things you can do is to be careful when you buy when your parents by fish tell them to buy sustainably grown stace. It's very important because otherwise we're really making it almost impossible for penguin babies to grow up to adults. The kind of fish we eat is probably one of the important things in the other thing is to try to reduce our impact on climate change. Because that says huge huge problems. That's doctor charles bergman. We've posted a lot of links at children's.

"That's little feat music with penguins from a cd called jump around right here on the children's hour we're jumping around jumping around the topic of penguins with our guest. Dr charles bergman and our kids have a lot more questions you see paying ones in the zoo wire they tied. We might wonder why you're so big. They feel like they're just the right size. What species are we seeing in zoos. Mostly zoos you see madge alantic or african thing the Black and white stripes but they often. You'll often see king penguins which are big at right. Orange ear patches and one john the front of their chest or amber penguins. I think we have macaroni. Penguins here in albuquerque lucky. Yeah they're pretty neat looking really cool they have a big fluffy heritage of gold feathers. There can be able to survive in an dark vika. What makes them so special. When i was in antarctica. I've been to antarctica. Many times when i went particularly to see the emperor penguins. I found myself asking exactly that question because emperor penguins only penguin but actually stays in antarctica year round in. it gets very very cold. It gets fifty to sixty degrees below zero fahrenheit very cold winds about a hundred miles an hour and you wonder why are they they are. Why are they having their babies. They're but they're all they're adapted to it and they managed to do it. And i guess the main reason is they can find. Lots of food in the ocean is very rich ocean for food for penguins. That must be the reason. They are there as far as i understand. Penguins are unique species because the males of the penguin species raised. The checks is that are we. Is that correct. Well you kind of a stamp payment Different species have different ways of going about it but most species are what we would call monogamous that is dedicated to particular mate announced. Keep that made over several seasons. The emperor penguin is the pain one. That specifically does a lot of the raising of the check. And here's what happens. The female lays in a in the middle of winter in antarctica heads. Sixty degrees below zero. There are a lot of storms. there's there on. Ci so they're out completely exposed on the ice and so they don't have s so what she does is transfers the egg to the feet of the of the mail on a top of its feet in it tucks it under a flap of skin and covers it with feathers and then she goes away. She goes off to the ocean to feed and she leaves in. The mail is left with the with the egg. And he can't lie down he asked stand and he's gonna. He's the who incubates the egg for nine weeks. He has to stand the whole day if he lives down. The egg will come out. And if the ed comes doubted done it takes two seconds to the to die so he is the one in charge of incubating and overseeing the hatching and not only does he not sit down. Lie down or anything. He doesn't eat for nine weeks seats. Nothing and he'll is forty percent of his body weight and then he has the baby. And when the chick hatches the females come back and then he gets his turn to go. So that's one of the most unusual mating strategies child rearing strategies of any animal in the whole world. And then how long those babies stay with the mom and dad about two and a half months to grow up so they have to grow up pretty quickly because they're on. The ice in that ice will break up at summer comes and they have to be able to swim in fence themselves. In fact the parents will just leave the babies that a certain point the parents will just start off to swim in. The baby's guy got to figure out how to jump in the water and catch a fish on their own. How many babies do penguins produce at a time. Reagan question most produce one to two two is not uncommon but kingpin england's emperor penguins produce only one eight at a time and raise only one check at a time. Is that per year. Yeah Mostly for the emperor's per year. The king has the most unusual breeding calendar. I guess you could say chick stays with his parents for fourteen months. So it's an odd number and it names that they don't mate every year they'll have a year off most almost a year. You all pay when swam. Yes they do. They are experts swimmers. They are civil curbed swimsuits when we see him on land they waddle and they look like they don't really know how to walk very well Kind of coordinated in clumsy and when you watch them walking across the snow or something all said no slipping fall down and they look like they don't know what they're doing put them in water and they're like torpedoes they are just superb swimmers. But if you go to the galapagos sometimes you'd be lucky swim with penguins and when you swim with penguins you'll realize that they probably are looking at us in the water the way we look at them on lan based mustang. Why are those people not such good swimmer. They're such bad swimmers. But we're really good swimmers. Well there's a life goal for you to swim with penguins or even just swim as well as a penguin. We're talking with. Dr charles bergman. He's the author of the book. Every penguin in the world of quest to see them all and he is just full of penguin facts. We're not done asking you a lot of questions. Dr bergman but we're gonna come right back after this. This is gusta for.

"That's another really good all the penguins in the world except one lives in what is called the southern hemisphere. The part of the world below the equator so there are no penguins in the north where we live. There are no payments. You see a polar bear. You won't see penguins so penguins all live in southern hemisphere from the equator to the south me. And there's one penguin that it's actually found inland northern hemisphere that crosses the equator in only one and that one penguin is the galapagos penguin and there is one little colony of those winds found. Exactly one half mile north of the equator in the galapagos islands. And that's the only penguin that lives in the northern hemisphere to go see all eighteen species of penguins. You had to go to some pretty far flung places. Yeah i i have been to some very very very remote places places that you can only get to by special arrangement antarctica's very far away hard to get to an antarctica surrounded by an ocean which makes it even harder in in that ocean lots of little islands and some of those islands are the only place you can see a particular species of penguin. So you've got to figure out how to get to really far away islands. But they're beautiful. When it was higher it was a lot of fun adventures. I think i'm always surprised by penguins. They're so small when we see photographs of emperor. Penguins live down in antarctica. It just in my mind. I had always envisioned that. They were these huge animals. And then when i see them at zoo or somewhere in person they're actually pretty tiny little creatures. Aren't they well. The emperor penguin is three and a half feet tall to four. It can give me. It can get quite large when you see it in person it's strikingly big and it's closely related to the king penguin which is just about three theme and of the others are about two feet twenty inches to twenty four inches. So that's not a big not a big bird but they're not teeny like sparrows either. So it's all kind of relative. I guess you can say are penguins all related to each other. Yeah they're they're all they're all numbers. Less family called cintas. Could i so they are. They are definitely related by the way the ancestor paying when the the fossil in one of the big fossils fines for penguins from about sixty million years ago was a six foot tall penguin biggest bigger than a person. Bigger than all the kids. here we're talking with dr charles bergman. He has visited in person all eighteen species of wild penguins. We've got a lot more questions for dr bergman right after this. "Himself. He has no shame. It's cool, bro. I'm woke appears your host Ryan Kaufman. Lord, lift it out of his own will not go far enough for I 65 seconds left. Petrie Collective back in his own home takes one last get slap shots and the cup will stay in the bed. Half of a lightning are back to back Stanley Cup champions. Sports USA on the call as the Tampa Bay Lightning. When back to back Stanley Cups with a one Nothing win over the Montreal Canadians. And with that we welcome you to a Thursday edition of Drive time Sports. I am your host. Brian Kaufman, and that is my computer dinging. If you would like to get in touch with the show. It's easy enough for you to do it. 5229872 that is the text line or the phone line. I would love your thoughts on The lessons learned from this Stanley Cup final and I got a lot on the Stanley Cup final today. Lot of it. As it pertains to history. The lightning. The Avalanche. The balance of power in the Eastern Conference going deep. Today. I'd love to have you go Ah, deep with me, 5229872 You also find me on Twitter at gingerly tweets. Some baseball to mix in some basketball game. Two of the NBA Finals is tonight. Um, um Yeah. So that's what I got. Let's start with Tampa would be kind of weird if I played that clip from our friends at Sports USA and then talked about like the latest with Aaron Rodgers. So let's get into hockey. The obvious question, and we had already broached the subject in recent days. But the obvious question that has to be asked, is it Are the lightning a dynasty? Here is their seven year stretch. Because I think You can't be a dynasty. In just two or three years' time. You have to show more sustained success than that. Lightning over the last seven years. In order. Watch the Stanley Cup final lost in the conference finals, missed the playoffs entirely. Reach the conference finals, got bounced in the first round and then won back to back Stanley Cups. So two Stanley Cup victories. One other parents Two conference final losses. First round exit and then one season without the playoffs. Does that to you sound like a dynasty. Because to me It doesn't Dynasty is not a word. I think should be thrown around. And should be reserved. For The truest sense of that word, And I don't think the Tampa Bay Lightning art We've had a dynasty. In the salary cap era. And it was the Chicago Blackhawks, who over their seven year stretch in seven is My arbitrary. I'm just trying to do apples to apples. Maybe you don't need that many years. Or maybe you need more. But the best apples to apples comparison I found was about seven years. Here. Blackhawks. Reach the conference finals than won the cup. Got bounced in the second round back to back years won the cup again went to the conference finals again and then won the cup again. Three Stanley Cups. Two conference finals appearances. Made the playoffs all seven years. And was able to at least get out of the first round in every season. That sounds like a dynasty to me. And one of those cups by the way, and this is part of the reason why I went. Black Hawk seven years Tampa seven years. Because one of the Stanley Cups that the Blackhawks won Was against the Tampa Bay Lightning. So the end if you think Tampa Bay's a dynasty The end of the Blackhawks dynasty gave way to the beginning of the Lightning dynasty. Doesn't mean that we can't have one dynasty going to another. But I just don't see the longer run by the Lightning. And say that's a dynasty. Certainly not when compared to Chicago. But the lightning don't have to be considered a dynasty. To be considered great. I think the real question To ask today is whether they are the greatest team of the salary cap era. And when I look at the salary cap era in the NHL I see really four teams that are deserving of being in this conversation. Lightning Blackhawks Kings Penguins They're the only ones that and I'm not saying now All of them are equal. I'm just saying, when you look at this salary cap era, those to me are the teams that you Are looking at And then you whittled down.

I'm gonna get it's interesting because i think that dad's sometimes go a little unnoticed and i think that one of the reasons with go unnoticed notice because there's sometimes so many bad dads that are out there. You know to kind of overshadow. But i will tell you this. Most dads do have moments in their lives that they wish that they could do over right. I mean there's an issue with daddy do-overs where i think. Every dad question is parenting. Why i don't. I feel like it comes more naturally to women to moms but also dad sometimes get discounted and let's let's be honest. Sometimes we make dumb decisions and do stupid things but it doesn't mean we're not constantly trying to better ourselves trying to become better parents and i constantly. It's the one area of my life. My confidence is not there like in my job. No problem. I'm i'm totally on top of the world in any hobby. I take on or anything else in my personal life. I constantly second guess things with my kids and i wonder like handled that differently. And i it's like my biggest challenge in life. And i talked about my daughter going to college and stuff. That's the one thing. I always worry about in in my struggle is always like how i handle my kids. When i'm parenting. How would you rate yourself as a dad. Like what would you give yourself on a scale of like. If five were the highest in one were the lowest. What would you give yourself jeeze. I'd say three or four. I think you're underestimating yourself. Well i know him. Better than a lot of guys. Because i'm present and i'm always there. I'm making sure that i'm supportive. First off you need to choose what you're going to be painting the signs an easy thing but it's can be quite complicated and you have to judge how complicated that process is going to be. From Tanzania researchers discovered Africa's largest ever collection a fossilized human footprints left in volcanic mud about ten thousand years ago. Many of them came from a group of Seventeen people mostly women all walking in the same direction. From Norway archaeologists excavating a twenty meter. Climate change isn't just shifting how the world feels, it's changing how it sounds

"His climate change changing the sounds. We hear nature. I'm NPR chief meteorologist. Paul Hutler here with climate cast. Close Your eyes and listen to a spring day in Minnesota. That's the sound of nature coming alive again. We know many animals are adapting to climate change. Some are shifting range or habitat but changing environments may also be changing the sounds. Animals make science journalist and author. Emily anthems wrote about the changes for the New York Times. Emily welcome to climate cast. Thank you for having me. Why did you want to write about animal? Sounds and climate change precisely because it was such an unexpected effect of climate change. I came across a paper that outlined how climate change might alter the way. The whole planet sounds and that was in effect. I had not read about or thought about. Here's a sewn from your piece I love. Let's hear the King Penguin. Emily King Penguins can actually change their calls based on win conditions. Is that right and they do. If you've ever seen a documentary about penguins you may know they nest in these big large colonies and when one in the meeting pair goes off to get food and they come back. They have to find their mate in their chick and they do that through. Acoustic cues and if the wind is really strong it's hard for them to find and hear their partners but scientists have learned that they can adjust to these conditions by issuing more calls and they also draw their calls out. And what did you learn about the cookie? Frogs of Puerto Rico So researchers had known for several decades that these frogs vary by altitude. So if you start at the bottom of mountain where it's warmer. The frogs are relatively small. But as you go up the mountain of the frogs get bigger and their calls change along the way so the small frogs at the base of the mountain of these sort of tiny little squeaky calls and as the frogs get bigger and you travel up the mountain of the calls get sort of lower and deeper and slower but scientists have now found that as the temperature and weather conditions change halfway up the mountain. The frogs are now smaller than they used to be. Which means that they're calls are Sort of faster and squeak year. We know that the oceans are absorbing a great deal of the carbon that we're putting into the atmosphere and that makes our oceans more acidic but emily. I didn't know that shrimp snapped but found some Australian research on that. Yeah so to be clear. Not all species of shrimp Snap but there are some species known for really loud snaps that they make when they quickly closed their large claws. Scientists have found that as oceans. Get MORE ACIDIC. These snapping sound seemed to be getting quieter and quieter emily. Some people might be listening and thinking. Why do changes in how animals sound matter? What's the case for that one? Is that a lot of species. Use Acoustic cues to find mates and so one concern with the Puerto Rican frogs. We talked about. Is that if you have a call? That's changing but the animals say inner ear doesn't change then you could eventually get to a scenario where there's a mismatch there and animals can't hear potential mates calling. In the case of the shrimp larva alike fish larva used. These sounds to help themselves navigate and to find suitable habitats after they hatch in the instance of the penguins if they have to call longer and more frequently and louder in inclement weather than that takes energy. And it's already precarious to survive in the wild. If you have to put a lot more energy into trying to produce sounds that can be heard That can be costly from survival. Perspective Science Journalist and author. Emily Anthony's thanks for sharing some sounds of climate change on climate casts today. Of course thanks for having me.
