"Northwest news radio's carlene Johnson. And now to politics, voters in King County will decide next month if they'd be willing to raise property taxes for land conservation, more on that story from northwest news radio's Jeff pozole. Supporters of the measure held an event in white center saying land and King County needs to be saved from developers can count a councilman Joe McDermott. This project continues our county's long-term mission to increase public green space in incorporated urban communities. The idea is to give the county additional money to buy up property, so developers can't. But in the voters pamphlet, opponents of the measure argue that King County homeowners are taxed enough, and the more land that is conserved, the smaller the tax base, resulting in higher property taxes for existing property owners. Now, if approved, the rate would more than double from 3.1 cents per $1000 of assessed value to 6.25. Jeff pozole and northwest news radium. That is king Kelly proposition one. The death of a teenager during the chop occupation in 2020 was the focus of a hearing before the 9th circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco today. Northwest news radio's corwin Hague tells us the city of Seattle is accused of allowing the law to lawlessness that led to the death. Judges with the 9th circuit federal Court of Appeals today heard the city's response to the complaint from done Sinclair, the mother of Lorenzo Anderson, the 19 year old who was fatally shot inside chomp in June of 2020. She is suing the city in part for failing to enter chop to aid the dying teen. I know what you're supposed to do, and you didn't do it. Sinclair spoke to converge media in 2020. Today's Seattle assistant city attorney karella coward argued the city did not create a personalized danger to Anderson, judges fired back, questioning whether the city had, in fact, created the danger by abandoning the chop protest zone, aiding and abetting lawlessness, and following a policy of deliberate indifference. One judge also told coward, the city will have a problem if the case goes to trial because he said key evidence was destroyed. "Following this one, prepare to be amazed. Colin McRae's previous record of being the youngest, world rally champion at 27, hasn't just been beaten. It just got smashed. Let's find out who just became the youngest ever champion how he ended Finland's 20 year wait for a title. And what he can do for the future of the sport. Let's get up to speed with autosports, Tom Howard Tom. Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks for having us. Back on the show. So you just witnessed history being made in New Zealand with the youngest ever champion. The world rally championship. Let's remind ourselves, though, who the previous youngest champion was, tell us more. The legend that is all that was sadly Colin mccrea, certainly for me, he was a hero of mine growing up one of the reasons why I even got hooked into watching rallying and I'm sure there's several people of similar age to myself and an older and younger that would have also enjoyed watching Colin McRae. He was a real special talent on the his only world title in 1995 and did that at the age of 27, which was the youngest at the time. 27 back there would have been seen very, very young because champions were sort of, you know, the late 20s, early 30s, and sometimes mid 30s were sort of seen as the prime age to win a world title. So yes, Conor McRae was known as the mister maxim of attack. He was a very exciting driver to watch race for Subaru, the factory team and his early 90s then went to Ford and then he had his final season with citron in 2003. He still regarded as one of the legends of the sport even today, 26 years on since his world title. And in the top level of rallying in the modern era, tell me about the recent champions. And how long they'd been driving? Were they also all older? Inverted commas. Champions. If you're not too familiar with rallying and WRC, then in the last few couple of decades, we say it's been dominated by two Sebastian's two French French rally drivers, Sebastian Loeb, and Sebastian ogier, Loeb has the 9 time world champion, the most successful and greatest rally driver of the ball. He has 80 world rally championship wins and has been competing even this year on a part time basis at the age of 48 and still winning events so Monte Carlo in January, so Sebastian ogier took over from him. One 8 titles and is the reigning world champion this year until Kelly Robin Perez success. That sort of period of dominance was split by tanak who won the world title in 2019 for Toyota. So that's how the world rally scene has played out over the last few years. While following rally New Zealand over the weekend, Callie Robin perra is now world champion. They call him king Kelly. You could also call him birthday boy. Tell us about the weekend and Callie Robin Pereira being the new world champion. What's a weekend if you or Kelly off of Paris celebrating your 22nd birthday? I don't know. He does get any better, I guess. If you're a rally driver or if you're if you're dream is to win the world rally champion, it doesn't get any better than the weekend that Callie Robin Perez just experienced not only has he become that the youngest ever world champion at the age of 22 and one day. He also became the first Finnish world champion for 20 years, so it ended that drought for a rally mad nation. So it's a massive deal for Finland. They've already announced that there's going to have a special celebration day in the country in his hometown of your vascular. So it's a big deal for Finland. And a big deal for Kelly Rothenberg. I mean, he's just a phenomenal talent. It's a record, I reckon we won't see beaten. A new benchmark, which I think is just above and beyond what anyone could have imagined. Now, he hasn't come from nowhere, like all overnight success stories. It's been 20 years in the making. Maybe 22 years in the making. Because in the beginning, there was Harry, Robin pere. Yep, Callie's father, WRC driver, 1993 to 2006. What happened with his dad's career and how did that lead into Cali getting behind the wheel? Harry Robin pere a former factory driver for Peugeot and sayat as well and it's a bushy. So he's been around a while as Harry. But I only ever won one rally back in 2001 at Sweden. So he was a regular podium finisher, but never really a title contender. He was what you'd call, I guess, a very safe pair of hands. You would have implored him to just pick up the points and be that sort of driver there, but perhaps not the one you put your money behind to lead your team to a title. He's really has some helped build obviously his son Kelly wrote from pair in terms of the rally driver. From an early age, he's got him in the car in cars driving from I think 8 or 9. He's been Cali has been driving some sort of vehicle. What do you think about it? Yes, he's the youngest of a world champion at the age of 22, but he's been driving things for a very long time. And our over that time, you just build the skills. Boy, as he built some skills because most of the paddock most of the service park sorry would envy the skills that Kali Roth and bear have his age. Certainly, you just watching him, he is he has skills beyond his years. The composure that he has behind the wheel, I don't think we have seen in many drivers in all motor sport. It's something that I generally can't really describe, but he just has this sort of, I just jump in the car and I just go and do it. There's no worries, there is no sort of panic. He's machine like, I guess. Is the only way to sort of it's just a machine. I'm generally speechless at how good he is because we're obviously fold him all season 6 rally wins. But he just has this ability to just destroy his rivals, but he's real skill. And I guess this is sort of comes back to all those years that you've been training in all sorts of cars, trying to learn car control. And it's his car control, which sets him about apart from the rest, because when the weather gets tricky, Cali rov repair is untouchable. There is no one that can come near him when it starts raining or gets slippery.

"Right, it's not as if we are like we are in a completely accepting and open era now. There is still a lot of work to do. So I think drawing those historical parallels is useful not only for historical accuracy and technology, people's experience then, but also to highlight the need to improve things still now. Okay, quick pass blast to end. This is episode 1889, so the past blast comes from 1889 in from Richard hershberger historian saber researcher and author of strike forth, the evolution of baseball, this he titles with the intriguing subject line, Merkel's boner in 1889. So Boston at Philadelphia, August 26th, 1889. It is the bottom of the 12th inning with Boston at bat, the home team had the choice of innings at this time and for reasons beyond all human understanding some preferred to bat first. Mike king Kelly is at second base in Dan brothers at first with two outs, dick Johnston comes to bat, the Boston Philadelphia newspapers disagreed on what happens next. The account in the sporting life of August 12th is our best bet for a neutral report. So, quote, with two men out and two men on the bases, Johnston drove the ball into center. Phillies center Fielder fogerty rushed up to meet it, but it struck a rut and bounded past him to the fence. Kelly, of course, scored, and the spectators in the left field seats, as is their usual custom, jumped the three foot fence into the enclosure, not for the purpose of engaging in any ungentlemanly conduct, but because it is the quickest way out of the grounds. But 200 or 300 got as far as the diamond when captain farrar, Phillies first baseman called to fogerty to throw the ball to him as he wished to make a claim that Johnston did not run to first base on his hit, for goody did throw the ball in the diamond, but Kelly picked it up and was making for the players exit when both firearm and Phillies left Fielder Della hanke ran up to Kelly and attempted to take the ball away from him for the purpose of making the play. But Kelly refused to release his grip on the ball, it being usual for the winning team to take the ball, and he not knowing what Farrah wanted with it, and the crowd, which was now thoroughly excited, but unaware of what the three men were doing rushed to the assistance of the home players, and then there was a scene of the wildest excitement. Several passes were made at Kelly and for a time it looked squally for him. Several of the Boston players were also struck. Finally, with the aid of officers, Kelly was hustled to the dressing room from which he was afterwards smuggled through the ticket office into a carriage and driven away from the waiting crowd, while in the dressing room captain farrar said Johnston did not run as far as first base, and that was the reason he wanted the ball to which Kelly replied that he did not know what for I wanted the ball four unless it was to give him an old one in place of the new, which was in play at the time, the winning run was scored. He said, had farrar told him what he wanted to do with the ball, he would have given it up for our did not admit that he did him this but said that Kelly should have known what he wanted the ball for. Both umpires said they did not see the play, curry, who was giving base decisions claiming that he was watching Kelly, who was very fond of cutting third base when any advantage could be gained by the trick. So did Johnston touch first base or did he veer off the Philadelphia papers are quite sure he went nowhere near for space, the Boston papers report that Johnston claimed he had touched first, but our suspiciously unwilling to affirm it as fact. It is a pretty good bet that the video review would show he did not go to first. The Phillies protested the game, but the Boston win was upheld, there were unusually for the time two umpires that day, but neither could state that Johnston had not touched first. The plate umpire was watching the ball while the base empire is watching Kelly to make sure he touched third. So this is nearly identical to Merkel's boner 19 years later, the two differences are that Merkel was at first while Johnson was the batter, and where neither umpire saw the disputed play in 1889 in 1908 umpire hango day saw that Merkel did not touch second in both cases the league upheld the umpires call. What most strikes me about this incident is that where Merkel's boner is one of the most famous plays in baseball history, this one is entirely forgotten. I know of no mention of it, even while just 19 years later, the Merkel play was a hot topic. No one said, you know, the same thing happened back in 89. Boston was in a tight pennant race. This game mattered, perhaps had the ruling gone the other way, we would remember it, probably not. Baseball in 1908 had little historical memory, the idea of baseball history developed in the 1930s, hardly anyone remembered 19th century ball by then. This is where the Hall of Fame didn't induct any purely 19th century players until its fourth class and to this day 19th century baseball has an air of before times that doesn't really count. So this was the boner before the boner. The forgotten boner, but arguably just as big a boner. I want you to leave in all of this I want. Okay. You know, it's just like, when people are remembering the size of their boners, they're prone to exaggeration. That is true too. Yeah. But that's good to show that the historical circumstances can dictate how these things are remembered or whether they are remembered at all and maybe Merkel. He could have been forgotten at least this part of his life, his boner could not have been as big an issue for him that stayed with him throughout his life. When do you think it flipped for him in terms of, well, he died at some point, but I was going to say, when did the transition happen from the play being the reason that people remembered it to the language being the reason that people remembered it. Right. Because I would submit the following Ben. If a mistake like that weren't called a boner, we wouldn't remember it now, no matter how. Bigot or not grass is muff, we're not grasses muff, and

"Next week and take advantage of the trade deadline special at stad head dot com. Cool. Yep. And now I will leave you with the past blast. This is episode 1881. And so this past blast comes from 1881. This is Mike king Kelly of the Chicago club cotton corners. That's what this one is about. This is from Richard hirschberger, as always, historian, saber researcher, author of strike for the evolution of baseball. So Boston at Chicago, may 20th, 1881, Kelly is at second cap Ensign is at bat, and as reported in the Chicago Tribune, it was strongly suspected that Kelly, in his eagerness to reach the plate from second, somehow forgot to go by way of third, but slated that bag entirely by some ten or 15 feet. Thereby saving much valuable time and distance. The umpire of necessity was fixing his attention upon the play at first base, where burdock, second baseman, and diesel, first baseman, were disposing of Anson and hence that official could not possibly know whether Kelly touched the third bag or not. The umpire was doing his duty, and since he did not with his own eyes, see Kelly skip the base, he could not under the rules give him out. The Boston Herald had a different take. Anyone who read the description of the way in which the Chicago Boston game of last Friday was lost to the Boston's, will recognize it once the system of playing favored and petted by the Chicago management. To get a run honestly, if a man can, but get a run, is the policy of that club as laid down by its president. It is not a policy that commends itself to honest people. If a game is not to be one on its merits, but is to be stolen, then baseball will degenerate as it deserves. And Richard writes there is only one umpire with but one set of eyes, why only one umpire? No one wanted to pay two. Well, that makes sense. It would be well into the 20th century before at least two umpires was universal and the official rule still include a provision for a single umpire in 1887, Kelly was traded to Boston. He would continue his little ways which the Boston press will realize is smart aggressive play to be commented. So when he's doing it for your team, then you'll like it, I guess. But when it's your opponent, then he's a no good dirty degenerate. That's fantastic. Yep. All right. By the way, did you see Williams has to deal is back in the big leagues and pitching now? Yeah. He pitched again as he does from time to time and I know we've mentioned I've certainly mentioned I'm kind of over position player pitching at this point. Even when it's Williams, but I did appreciate that he got Donovan solano of the reds to ground into a double play on a 40 mph pitch. Just can't be a good feeling. Up there with things that happened this week that could not be good feelings of drew Jones, the number two overall pick in the emphasis draft to hurt his shoulder. It sounds like taking batting practice with his team just after signing. They're spent. It's so weird. All of their and we don't know the extent of the injury, but I think it's the last four years of their first rounders have all had shoulder things. Man, yeah, so to go from the high of, hey, I just got drafted second overall and I'm getting a big bonus and I'm going to embark on my professional career to I hurt my shoulder taking padding practice and now potentially could be out for the rest of the season. So that sucks a lot. Probably sucks more than grounding into a double play on a 40 mph pitch from studio, but yes. Neither one could possibly feel good, I don't think. Yeah, like I think we can acknowledge that these things exist on a continuum and also that they both would feel bad in the moment. How much longer they feel bad, probably depends, but yeah. Yeah, I guess you get over the double play pretty quickly. You get to come up again, whereas if your shoulder is hurt, you do not. Right. All right, let's take a quick break and we'll be right back with Evan Cho. I'm here so fast that you are holding

"So all of these things complicate the idea of actually coming up with this rule is in the books because this one person came up with this idea to do this thing on this day and then the rule was written. So often false or an oversimplification. And so there are a lot of legends like there's the legend of king Kelly, for example in the 19th century who supposedly took advantage of the substitution rules at the time. And I'm quoting here from Sarah Wexler's piece for the hart ball times from 28, 15. The specific details differ depending on which source you are reading, but the general outline remains essentially the same during a game he did not start Kelly was sitting on the dugout pinch when the opposing team's batter hit a high file ball that drifted his way, noticing his team's catcher had no chance of getting to the ball Kelly called out something to announce he was coming into the game, usually this is reported as some variation of Kelly now catching. Kelly then made the catch to record what he believed was a legitimate out under the rules of the day. So there are a lot of variations of that story just self substituted himself in the middle of the play to make a catch. Great story. So you can understand why it would be told and retold except there is no documentation of this. Many people including Sarah have tried to trace down the origin of this and it just doesn't seem to have ever happened. And it doesn't seem to be consistent with the substitution rules at the time. So it seems to be complete bunk and Kelly was a colorful character and maybe there were things conflated and people just make up these tall tales after the fact. So I'm trying to steer away from those in this draft. And then there are some where people will attribute a change that had a lot to do with other players and conditions during that time to one person, so sometimes people will call the changes made after 1968, the change to the mound tight and the strike zone, the Gibson rules, the idea that those rules were made in response to pop Gibson. And sure, he contributed, but that was the year of the pitcher and the league batting average was two 30, something. It was not just him. And so he was maybe the most visible face of that, but it was a league wide trend, or people will say, Ed Walsh's spitball was so good that they banned the spitball, but really they'd been talking about that for years and years and it was just kind of a rampant issue. And then there's some stuff that just doesn't seem to be true. Sometimes you'll read that the spitball was banned because of ray Chapman's fatal beaning. That doesn't even line up with the timeline football his band before ray Chapman was beaned, but also sometimes you'll see that umpires started replacing balls and bringing in fresh baseballs during a game because of ray Chapman because he was hit by a dirty discolored bowl that he couldn't pick up as well. And there's like an element of truth to that in that they were maybe more diligent about enforcing that rule after he was killed, but they had already started doing that years like a decade before then. So it's not a new rule that was on the books because of that. So those are all my stipulations here. And as Peter, the author of a game of inches wrote to me via email, a comprehensive list of this kind would be heavily weighted toward the early years because there was no attempt to cover every conceivable point, leaving plenty of loopholes. So they were not as many rules back then. So there was also a general belief he says that exploiting those loopholes was not fair play. However, by the 1880s, that mindset had begun to change leading Henry Chadwick to moan that national league owners were selfishly passing rules to thwart the superiority of particular players or teams. And he says the nature of this sort of list is that there are a lot of borderline calls and that there are some cases he notes where maybe one player or one play drew attention to a problem and provided the immediate justification for a rule change, but it could plausibly be argued that conditions had changed to make those changes necessary and that an accumulation of events in players were responsible. So that's all of the caveat that I wanted to attach to this before we start drafting. And I've also ruled out a few obsolete rule changes like things that are no longer on the books and are just kind of archaic. In the 1880s, there were rules made to prevent a certain kind of pitching delivery by John Montgomery ward, for instance, of the players league, where he turned his back to hitters and they banned that. Harry write, for instance, they passed a rule to ban non players from the bench or the precursor of the dugout at that time, obviously that's not still a rule. So I've taken out a couple of those that really no longer apply in a pretty obscure. So all of that said, I guess I should give you the first pick here. I don't know if there's not a Jose Iglesias in the minor league draft pick here. It's all kind of a jungle and we're not even sure what criteria we're trafficking. This is what I'm saying. Yeah. Because initially, you asked, are we drafting based on which rules are the best? And I was thinking, maybe just we could kind of go by feel and which ones we like. And as you pointed out, you dislike the rules because a lot of these loopholes and exploits are really fun. And so you kind of wish that they could keep happening. And so we're not necessarily drafting the rule itself because we're happy that these things are banned now. But at least in my mind, we're drafting based on our appreciation for either the trollish Ness or the ingenuity or just the sort of silliness of the initial offense that prompted the rule, I guess that's kind of how I'm thinking of it. Yeah, okay. Okay. You don't have to draft that way. Jeff based on different criteria, who knows? Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I think that and I want to be clear in terms of my some of these are just no fun rules. There's a sliding scale for that. I think that your insight that while some of these names are sort of strongly associated with one historical figure that they might just constitute the game having gotten to a point where they were saying enough already, right. We have to we have to move things along. We have to maintain competitive balance. We can have sort of loopholes that we don't feel the need to explicitly close, but if they're going to keep getting picked at, we might have to sort of stitch them up so that we have a game that resembles something that is what we want, you know? If people prove themselves to be unwilling to control themselves, then we might have to have some regulation to do it for them. So I'm sympathetic to that as a need, even if I wish that some of these rules were not explicitly stated, although I do think that there are a couple of them that are just patently unnecessary. Ridiculous, but I'm going to go, I'm going to go with a conservative pick at the top of the draft actually. Because I don't see I really don't see a downside to.

"Of minute. Work down under or just trying to get reconnected. With the guys back at ks bar give us a call five. Oh two five. Seven one eighty or eight seven seven nine four tonight. We'll just go ahead and open up the phone lines right now while we wait for the guys to get reconnected. Let's go to jerry. what's up. Jerry hey well yeah Actually and i was going to point out that understand with the players. The thing that makes me question they got not being. There is if you read the count. The police were right on top of it broke up the fight. If anybody had a gun probably got arrested and probably would if it probably would have been a report so that kind of makes me think that gun make may not have been there and the second thing is What i've heard that that was said of these players that account. Wd rb sound awful defensive and it sounds like they're trying to get out the right texture every got mad. If you can hear can this guy here me. Yeah because he's just talking hilton. We didn't we didn't hear you hear you. Okay thank you very much. I don't know what was going on. He's talking about the gun situation. Okay i didn't hear. I don't wanna make you repeat it. I appreciate the call i do. I do think that was jerry rice. Jerry but i know what he's going to say and i and i don't want everybody to hear it again. I'm sitting here trying to get ryan and what is going on with this. This is why we don't sit inside right because we sit inside it goes off and it doesn't work. This is why we say to sit outside. We've never had an issue at this table but we're having today remember just a couple days ago. I was having all kinds of problems getting signals. Getting a signal knows at my house. We have this new okay. Well so how do we fix the other thing. it's broken dead. I gotta order a new. Did they order it. I don't know this is to be there with you guys. Why don't you check and see if they like these. My job is interesting. That getting on the air is a part of this. Show everything that happens after it becomes much easier if we can actually get on the ada and for some reason maybe that little signal problem here last couple of days when does look like it should be collecting dust in a shop just hanging and there's literally hanging. Where did you get. This banstead gave it to me. I don't know if she's keep going on around. I mean we're connected buzzing. Do you hear the. Don't worry about the not well. It's buzzing admires earier. Well okay fine. I'll fix it during the break. I don't know what jerry sam but my guess it was probably negative and i wish him the best so one person who everybody says. West unsealed should be on that list. Listen darrell griffith. Wes unseld though didn't he went to state titles. I i don't know if you did so so rex's out on sales you. Would you put butch beard in. Instead of one of these people. He took breckenridge to to state to win. State or did he want mr basketball. What about butch beard. I wouldn't wrecks off. Are you take off. Maybe alan houston. Alan houston won a state championship scored fifty in a losing effort. To stay. rix is without a doubt the biggest rockstar barish not. That's not the same thing. The question is who produced. I mean like is that not. Let me this. John walls because rockstar. We've ever had here basketball. Would you put him on the mount rushmore kentucky basketball. No you go. it's on. What was a great player. Rex was a great player. But being the rockstar. Does it make the best. West unscaled wants to state championships dominates. I mean he. I think he's over. And richie and king. Kelly are over. Rex and i would argue so as allen. He used you. Can't we can't do this. And have no one. From the city of louisville which for most of the state's history had the best basketball. So who's bertrand. Alan houston west. Darrell griffith ambush mirror and we'll bush's breckenridge county. Yeah but i considered a little guy. 'cause he went to little. I don't know. I mean. I didn't see those guys play. So who would you put. I think to to me ritchie king. Kelly are two of them. And i think you got to pick two of that group that you just mentioned up still going to order for each shepherd win the next titles. He didn't have to win any. Brian will still put on there. Because he's a rockstar will have both rockstar and some championships. would you put ritchie and king. Kelly ahead of wrecks. Yeah but record. Even though he didn't get stay panel he's still wants. You're you're gonna put wreck's over. Wes unseld who won two titles. Butch beard who won two titles allergies do wanna titled scored fifty in a losing effort. Another year and darrell griffith. Who won one time. We're going to pick one of those guys for sure and take wrecks out. Can't take rick set. i just can't do it. What is why. Because borough. I was around when he was playing high school about these guys. If you were around i wasn't around for you around western sale. High school has not listen out in houston. I was brexit's shave arguments. We'll take five to five seventy one today now. Deducting sports radio presented by stockton mortgage. Here's jones quarterback pay sports radio. I will do five seven one today. Simpson simpson for five four. I think we've got this going. What birthrights please calm down. When you get frustrated it makes me wanna turn the show off and turn it off makes my blood pressure. Go through the roof. What are you talking about a lot of people that like it when you get work first of all. It's a show. yeah. I'm not really mad. Years ago i got really bad. I learned to stop. Get really mad. I am a slightly frustrated and heightened the frustration. For fact like it's a radio show. I mean i feel like some people think that like you know. We're sitting over here stabbing each other during the break. There have been times that we get really angry. But you know it like. I'm just our emotions on. This show are us just sometimes height right like we don't. I was frustrated. But i act more frustrated because it's a show and i shouldn't have to like the one to two wrestlers. Don't punch so hard punch it's show. It's how feel now getting now. I'm actually getting frustrated. So they want us to say that. I think rex chapman. Npr out rush. I was much more frustrated with you. Not picking picking rex chapman than the in the equipment. Yeah because i don't see how you do that. Who would you put. would you put on these dudes that won these championships. Or would you put on rex. Well i just looked up at the k j k. Hsa record book and rex's name. Is it really on any of the charts. I know it's not on any of them. So that i would definitely put more weight on winning the title. I mean rex as far as popularity and being the king i think he's number one but with Just looking at numbers saw the other guy mentioned a lot more. John wall and algae for rex is the right way because nobody would would say that john wall wasn't an amazing play right top twenty in uk history. Maybe top fifteen. But he's not top four but he's the biggest rockstar and that's rex. Yeah so for this conversation with guys that have multiple championships. It's hard puts him above the lost in the finals. Takhar crease in finals semi finals and the winning shot was hit by freddie bigger seniors. Correct which is very cool. Fred king kelly scored so many point. But that's why. I would put him on his records in trouble. Travis perry lanker break it..

When we're going to take a class trip might be might be the case bar. They'll get your cdl. You can drive the bus driver. I'm not. I'm not to you know when i was in college scotty. Basler former mayor of lexington congressman he. Uk basketball player. Yeah i mean. That's one of the things he he was. He was my teacher one semester transi and he set us up a trip to washington. Dc who and it was a great trip. We went to congress and we met because the class was called congress. That was the class so we went to congress and he took us and he took us like backstage. We went to the congressional lunch room and we met a bunch of congressmen and we went on the floor back. Then you could go on the floor. You can't really do that anymore. So we did all that stuff but the thing was he had gotten it to where we had money to fly but the turkey hunter back then didn't like to fly. He was kind of scared so he used the money and he rented us a van. That was a mistake because we ended up leaving like four days early in the van went to the beach. You know did a lot of things that college trip you should do. You should do but ended up but that was one of my most fun trips of all time. Unfortunately we all been on sunday. Night of that trip wouldn't watch the pay per view shannon where owen hart died. Which was which was downer. Yeah for the for the night into trip trying to bring everything down. I'm just saying that was. That was a sad. But anyway i feel like when you're in school class trips. Make you happy. 'cause you get out of the classroom and goes. Are you saying you're taking your georgetown. College students to washington dc. I don't think i'm doing that because i don't. I don't think we have the money in a pot to pay for it so five seven today. Richie farmers birthdays today by the way it is. Happy birthday to richie farmer. We thinks the best richie farmer moment and uk history book up there. What would you have. We talked about it the other day. Freshman year freshman year senior night. Hit the game. Hit some big shots in that game. Was it his senior night where he took took the microphone to thank k. Would that was his his speech. He did yes he did. The speech on behalf of the uk program for cable which was very very cool and he. He's a perfect person because he's got his exactly. And of course i mean. Is he the greatest. What who's the greatest high school basketball player in kentucky if you're if you're ranking if you're going to put the mount rushmore of kentucky high school basketball who's going to be. It's going to be king. Kelly coleman gabby ritchie brick wrecks and richie and ritchie. And who's the other one. Would you put alan houston in. That was what i thought. I'm trying to think somebody. That would be alan houston and i tell you what i'm gonna throw that out there as my preliminary one and you're just what they did in high school only what they did in high school. I just want what they did. High school. I don't wanna talk about what they became or anything like that just high school. If you're talking high school performance. I think the one. That's the shakiest of that. Group is actually rex as good as rex. Was you know. He didn't even make state tournament. Senior year right got beat up or district now. Of course they play a good team in district. But so i. But i'm willing to be talked out of those but for right now i'm going to put king kelly coleman ritchie wrecks and allan houston and you tell me seven seven seven seven four five two five four who you would take off that list and put on your your distant fifth from your high career. We'll put you fair. I am not sure that i would be on the top. Twenty of the people in my class at middlesboro did win my high school classes one on one tournament did we are so big after they had asked me after the after the coach said you know. I don't know that you're ever gonna play here. And i quit the next year. We had a one on one whole. And i want you on your big state. And he didn't like that. Yeah i want in part. Because i would just back. People down cooks chefs which was irvine step. If we just point score. Doesn't he have like second motorcade scored. I think you got to win. And i think you've gotta be like most famous lack of better word. That's why like he. I mean you can't just pick the guy in your cownie. I feel like. That's why. I'm not sure rex's on it because i feel like you got to warn maybe even wanna state championship own the state. When he put that was was great. It'd be wrong but he party owned it because he was a celebrity. Yeah packed out you had to. Jv game just to be able to have a cpa. I kelly coleman win a state championship. I don't think they won. I think he scored like sixty something points in the semifinals and they used to have a constellation game and he came back school like another sixty or something in that one. Yeah well anyway. Five zero to five seven today. Go text machine seven seven. Two sim four five two five four. Let's talk about i want to give a little. Because i'm sure you know the whitney houston hologram is booked in busy in vegas or whatever for the first few shows that she can pull up to madison square garden. Kelly is not a legend. No i'm sorry he isn't. He made some good songs. Don't get me wrong. He made some shit there. We really enjoy back in the nineties. But i would not put his level of talent. "The pitcher could be the one calling the pitches because i guess the question is whether historically the system developed as it works now because it's better for the catcher to be the one who is calling the pitches or just because the catcher had to be the one comcast because if the pitcher called pitches in the past wealth than the batter would know exactly what was coming and so you had to have the catcher to it so that it would not be visible to the better but now if you don't need that then i wonder and i was just looking back at at the history of signs and former effectively wild guest paul dickson wrote a book called the hidden language. A baseball which is all about signs and signs dealing and just read you a few passages here from that book just about how far back. The current system goes so even going back to the eighteen sixty nine red stockings. The famous i fully professional team that toured the country. They were using signs and they either invented her. Help popularized it. So he was a reporter from a california paper writing on september. Twenty six eighteen sixty nine. It must be remembered that the first nine of the red stockings are picked. Men from among the best players of the united states are in constant practice and have perfected stream of telegraphic signals as easily recognized as if spoken words were used. The red stockings have really two captains the ostensible one in the position of centerfield directs movements of the fielders and the other is the catcher who indicates by signs to the pitcher and base keepers. The proper thing to do at the right moment and often of course. The catcher directs fielders. Now two and dixon rights thus early in baseball's history the catcher central role as the one who caused the game was established in it has remained so to the present. The catcher is far better qualified to orchestrate the defensive effort including the moving of fielders than anyone else on the team including the pitcher. Dixon says he can see all that is happening on. The plainfield can observe the battery at close quarters and gets to see the batters and observe their peculiarities much. More regular basis the use of the military term battery to describe the pitcher and catcher as a unit was also introduced with the pitcher playing the role of the men who aims and fires the cannon and the catcher the man who calls the shot signs and the lower surrounding then became part of the culture of baseball as the game progressed in its early years larry corcoran of the chicago. White stockings widely credited as the first big league pitcher to work out a system of signals with his catcher corcoran system involved. His catcher moving awad of tobacco two different sides of his mouth. Clearly the system worked as corcoran one. Forty three games. His rookie season of eighteen eighty another account credit silver flint. That's a great name silver flint tobacco signal while another suggests that chicago's catcher slash outfielder. Mike king kelly invented the modern system of finger signals by which one finger was a call for a fastball into a curve then the last thing as signals proliferated codes of unfilled behavior developed out of them and were well established by the turn of the century a player who disregarded a bunch sign ran through coaches stop sign was reprimanded or fined or both even though his disregard had yielded him a hit or next base while pitchers were not required to accept their catchers calls they were obliged to signal for different pitch by shaking their heads so catchers were not crust up into alert. The rest of the team as to what kind of pitch was going to be thrown. So we've had the system for one hundred fifty years or so. What say you will. New respond systems changed the way it works. I think i there is a. I don't know how accurate an assessment this is. But i think that i think part of what's what here is that there is a sense that like the catcher in addition to whatever strategic elements. They are meant to be helping to sort of bring about on the field right to say. I know that i've seen pitches coming in. I know how this one looks like. I know this guy can hit like there's that part of it. I also think there's the part of it. That is them being sort of a temperate influence on the pitcher. Perhaps in moments of heightened stress or high leverage monster very taxing where it might. It might behoove the catcher to say. You shouldn't throw that you think that throwing that is a good idea. But i think that that's a bad idea and that might be informed by again. What what the catcher is seeing as the pitchers are coming in right. He might have some insight into how that particular pitches playing on any given night. He might have an understanding of what the hitter is good at hitting versus not he might also just by virtue of being a different person. Who's emotions or perhaps differently calibrated. Because he's not responsible for throwing the pitch be able to be more honest with himself and thus pitcher about like what's working and what isn't because maybe getting it around a little bit and it's pissing you off because you have good stuff and that good stuff is implying tonight. And you're on. No i'm gonna give you one more fastball. Maybe that fastball is right down main street. And that's not what you need. So i do think that there is sort of a like an emotional regulator role that kind of falls to catcher sometimes. Not all the time and they're plenty of you know there are plenty of perfectly sassy catchers and there are plenty of very lick. Even steven pitchers so don't mean to say that they always have to do that. But i do think that there is some benefit to being able to be slightly removed from the act of having to deliver the pitch. It's not that emotion always leads to tobias or an inability to make clear decisions but it is sort of a close cousin to that at times and you also are just like able to see it. You're sitting back there. Seeing the cnn those pitches is they're coming in. Seems like that would be useful. So i would say no but i don't know maybe my sense of is wrong. I mean you do see pitchers shake their catcher off right. You know that happens to. I could see it. Making sense for some pitchers like greg. Maddox is is for having sometimes called his own pitches or even called other pitchers on his team's pitches from the dugout from the bench..
