"Your own rules. Don't apply to you. And more that included a third of democrats and more than half of independence in addition to a vast majority of republicans. So what do you do at this point to win their trust back going forward in your career. It's you know this is something that has obviously changed the perception of you for the worse in the long run here we are nearly a year later and even still people still have that picture of you work every day and and i think there's a lot of evidence working hard every single day to do the job that i was elected to do i. I owned up to an incident occurred a year ago. And someone's fiftieth birthday. The restaurant that was open. And i showed up. There were too many people at the table. I should've gotten up and left. Period walked in with a mass walked out with a mass but for too many people to table and made a mistake. And i recognize that. A lot of folks. Don't even acknowledge mistakes. We did that. And so that's That's the work we've been doing since and and Morgan and we'll continue. "This is the first regular season series since moving over to cover the giants. Yeah this the only thing that was one of the things that was great with seeing all the security and heinsohn's people especially on the people that we didn't see last year when was cova So that was actually really really wonderful. The only thing that was weird wasn't weird being on the field which i thought it might be. It was weird when the game started. And i realized i was covering the team that was hitting first and that for some reason that was the one where i was like. Whoa whoa wait. What's car that team that. That was a weird thing for me. But you're not covered the rangers for two years. So i've covered the the visiting team here before. So i guess obviously as a million years ago but shouldn't be that weird but i was i was it was. I thought it was going to be strange. Not sitting in my old seat. But i was delighted to get there and find that they had given my old seat to the late pedro gomez. There's a little spot there. For pedro and i loved that so somebody else's got my seat. I'm absolutely thrilled. That it's pedro matt. kawahara That was always wonderful to talk to you on our joint podcasts and we will talk again closely into the season and figure out where both of these teams are heading. That could be very exciting or hey we'll talk again in. Maybe an october before. Bay bridge serious. That's my plan. I have another bay bridge series. "I'm proud of the work. It's been tastic now. i can't let you go before. We talk about the fact that there is a local team. In the college world series ends a stanford grad. I definitely wanna that up. But i'm sure you guys all You know pay close attention to the college world series to What's the interest level. And and how do you see that. College world series especially with stanford in it levels like super hyrax. The drafts after the world series. In the past it's kind of been just a or to your guiding may have selected to make sure they walk out of healthy but now they're now that it's taking place prior to the draft. I think our interest levels at all time high continued to follow the laws. These guys but listen. Coach has a great job there. They're a team. It's really kinda stanford team. That's really it really kind of had a nice trajectory as the season's gone along. They have some really stellar pitching performances. Tear down the stretch from their weekend guys. Some time getting i think he's got advice from extras. Some some veteran players some experience on their belt and he's got a couple young guys out there on the field with some exciting tools that perform really rose Also so you know it's it's funny number one seed arkansas. They lost the nc state. They were the heavily having favored going in. So it just goes to tell you know you get three game series. Just never know what will happen but I think i think for the casual fan. Who turns on tv and watches the world series a lot. You're gonna see a lot of competitive baseball and you're gonna see really good arms. You can see a lot of no different than what they're seeing that the major league level I think it's gonna be really fun. It'll be really fun to watch for because the talent level in that world series is definitely. That's fantastic do you send somebody or because you know so. All televised do not need to have a presence there. But we also monitor. that's great. Well michael holmes. Thanks so much for joining us. Here on giant splash and very very. What is it you hoping to accomplish. i mean to be quite honest as to make the team Just like the rest of the guys. I mean you could ask anybody In the locker room to regardless of if you had bigly camp you have a chance to make the team If you're in a minicamp situation you have a chance. Anybody as a chestnut team. I think like i said Like everybody knows We all are working our ass off apart my friends. We all work hard to to get to this point. We've all been given an opportunity and now it's pretty much there for the taking for I guess whoever I guess the gm and the ownership group to make the decision. But yeah like. I said i'm looking to accomplish making the team Continuing to work my butt off and to continue to develop make adjustments as the game adjusts to me just understand. Even if. "As I mentioned earlier, I've done every playoff game there is. So I game six will be twenty-seventh Tampa Bay rays game of the two thousand and twenty season. So wow, I'd like to say they have a chance if only because if they win it I, I'd like to think I get a ring because I feel I'm a along for the ride the whole time but I I would never count them out you. Know like as crazy as the ninth inning of game four was I've seen them do crazy stuff to the blue jays and and the Yankees over the years and I've a tremendous amount of respect for them. It's not going to be easy You know the pathways for them to win game six is Nell is really good and then Kevin cash uses his I leverage guys to get to the finish line because it's not like snails going seven just it doesn't work that way right? If they really good innings out of five and a third so he's going to. Need is high leverage guys, and then he's GonNa need them again in game seven now, Charlie. Morton wasn't good in game three. But as you know, Charlie Morton, Scott, a really good resume itchy riot riot games, right so Ryan limitation. Games Yeah Yeah winner-take-all finishing games elimination games whatever. So but Walker Buehler's at Dude right now and you know may looks right now a rat roll love or re as is in play they've got a lot of guys it's going to be tough. It's really going to be tougher Tampa Bay and even if they lose game six twenty to nothing. Significant season the dodgers have a significant edge but I I would never count the raise out there. There you. You can't. You just can't finish them off very easily. They have an unbelievable resiliency about. Well, that's That's that's a great analysis and you know, of course, I think most of the people are gonNA listen to this before game six for those who listened to it after the world series is over, we'll go back and overdubbed your voice with you know with everything can pass tennis. So you work with Chris, singleton right. Yes in all the World Series Jessica Mendoza's with us as well. Okay. I just want you to ask Chris if you remembers me, I. Don't know if he would or not. "But no, it's it's it's different. But again, something that we have to go through but you know I'll I'll say this too says. When you see the number of employees they? Ticket takers as the concession people and all the people in the bay area that people who work at the Coliseum also working San Francisco. So those people work our everyday six straight months for their entire. Their entire income, and now that's been shut down I feel so badly for him and your handed baseball back no fans in the stands you know that that's different different difficulty Someone said a matter of fact popular the other day actually can be our call with them, which is a shock because normally that that doesn't happen but Greg mentioned that same thing you said, you know how your dinner. You like the beat out on the field talking in the phone whatever. But you know something we have to deal with and. You know I think a lot of cases something like this. You try to go on your past experience. Things that that you kind of draw from the past and you know the game is still between the white lines and still basically baseball thrown into a hitter and you hope to catch it and you know there's a lot of pressure involved especially postseason I. think that's the most important thing that people have to understand that he is not regular season the astros to under five hundred and they won the first game in their undefeated so far postseason. So you throw all those things out the window you experience and you and you take what you learned maybe. From other times, it can help you in certain situations, and that's where it really comes in and plays a big part in the success in October one, her well Ray Fosse. "Years ago there was was much more the closed chamber thing and and and your editorial board has been very open about showing. You know what the process is all about and these zoom meetings are another. Another step in doing that. So on behalf of transparency everywhere advocates everywhere thank you for doing that Joe. I think it's very important than we when we have those headed toward board meetings that one that they're on the record in to that, any reporter who has an interest in expertise in that area is allowed in the room allowed to ask questions because frankly whether it's hugh covering politics for specialties on education or health or the environment. They're going to know more about the issue you're going to know more about the what what a candidate his said on the stop that then I will and I think that's really a good to hold them accountable a an editorial board we want to pretend anybody. From real scrutiny and what you care to one more. I. Don't WanNa put you on the spot. Do Care to talk about the one Major California political figure who all all in often asked to go off the record in the editorial board. There's a few of them are you think certified sign I am thinking of Senator Feinstein who likes to go off the record she goes can I go off the record hair and you're like, no, you can't. I don't think there's been an editorial board where she hasn't asked to go off the record. But here's what I find to very, very rarely violent somebody off the rest because as I put it. To her and others aisher went trust is group in the room to. Keep a secret that we are not in the business to keep secrets, and also the very practical reason just in terms of protecting. Your my own integrity is, let's say somebody does go off the record. And then it shows up in the chronicle of our other reporters who maybe wasn't in the room catches win. The suspicions going to be that somehow I broke that confidence and. I think it's easier just keep it all on the record. All right just like it's all political as always on the record. Thank you. "There's sort of the quote Unquote Know Caucus. There's only a handful of coincidentally most of the people who ended up running for president from the Senate but Democrats who voted against almost every one of trump's nominees even when it was. Eighty seven in favor they would be against she was one of those. She voted against an immigration deal one of only I can't remember the exact number but four less senators democratic senators who voted against that deal because it wasn't progressive, she knows how to take progressive positions. I can see her in the campaign having an attitude of we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA be on the right side of policy. But if you are just set against her I mean I, don't know that there's anything she can do to convince you that she's good enough I think that she has to she she's had enough. You know when you talk about the conversation she black enough she's had enough of these questions in her life that are not always fair about her That I think she knows how to have a thick skin and do what she sees her job without getting too sidetracked by some of that criticism I think first of all for progressives. I. Think that the over the last couple of months. There is a unity team that came together Bernie Sanders supporters and Joe Biden supporters that got together to sort of develop a common set of policy goal. So I think that might be not not as big a deal. To to Democrats notwithstanding the comments we had earlier from some from some progressive efforts. But I I don't think that's going to be the Democrats are so unified at this point of just getting rid of trump that they may be willing to overlook some of the policy differences there will be any as for the convention it's going to be really strange I mean. How Do Democrats? And Republicans for that matter and in a couple of weeks. Generate enthusiasm when you can't. Do it in person can conventions are about a lot of things? One of the things they are there about our to have grassroots activists from all over the country gathered in one place and get really pumped about this ticket, and then go back to their communities and spread the good word. There's going to be none of that. It's all going to be on zoom it'll be on television and. It's really hard to get to get people jacked up for that type of thing we don't know we're we're kind of wondering what will be like to cover this tall and I have covered many conventions and and and it's going to be odd to not be there in the room. So we'll see. All right. Well, we'll see if commonly Harris can fill some of that role tall and Joe. Thanks again for coming on. Thanks. Thanks to my guest today political reporters, tall copen and Joe. Garra fully to King Kaufman for producing this episode and thank you for listening..

"If indeed, that's a reason the ball travels a little better but we would that be a consideration I know that not hill gang is is quite popular out there but do you think it affects? The wind patterns and therefore the flight of the ball or in could that be on the table for for leaving? Yeah. I. Mean I. Don't really want to speak out of turn Ballpark Kinda decisions or a lot of people would be involved in those but dancer the question. It certainly, a plausible theory for me but I think about you know we we made a number of changes to the ballpark obviously putting the bullpens out in Centerfield You know I think anytime you chain structurally the configuration of the Ballpark you know wind patterns are so complicated. It's really hard to know how things are going to effected. So if if if some wind pattern expert came in and said, putting the bullpens in in Centerfield has increased, the carry out to right field would believe it I'm none of us really know any better so I think. Between the you know changes made in center field. You know not having fans at the park who knows how that affects affects things in the aerodynamics So I think that could be due to a number of actors I. Think we're open to anything I mean certainly I know our players have been very happy to see some that carry out to right field, and hopefully we can take advantage of it at these tapes we have coming up. We'll forearm. Thank you so much for this and thanks for your honesty and willingness to address all these topics much absolutely. I wanted to again. "Of these. That that stuff as we did a story about that, that's still in the fine print in a lot of a lot of labor early. So I mean I think we can't look at racism as a relic of the past. I think we have to face it very much in how it manifests today and white communities have to be a central part of that strategy because unfortunately, the reason that these rules have been rigged for so long with to benefit and protect the power of white people. Will look at the constitution right and why black people were named three fifths of a human being it was for the purposes of apportioning property empower, and some of those same rules endure today whether it be you know the way that. That black people. comprise. An. Overwhelming number of people who are behind bars whether it be you know even the kinds of things where you know black people have been. Incarcerated for you know marijuana at four times the rate as white folks even though the usage is the same. But now that cannabis is becoming legal in places like California, you would think that black people would dominate an industry that we were once criminalised for. But in fact what we're finding is that white communities are dominating that industry that was being used not more than three years ago. To lack up a poor black folks across the nation. So the question always has to be not, how can I be a better ally? Not How can I be a better co-conspirator but what can I gain? From making sure that black lives matter and without a real reckoning from that perspective. I don't see how the actions that we take shift. least. Thank you so much. "Can have in DC with what everybody's doing in the state to make sure we're maximizing all the resources that are available to us. I want to ask you about another California leader. And that's a captain Brett crozier from Santa born in Santa Rosa He's this week you sign onto a letter to the navy asking it to detail. Safety precautions for sale sailors in light of what happened on the Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier which the chronicle the story which the chronicle student sorry like what? What am I supposed to tell you that? Come on. Let on. He's home going? I gotTa do you. Do you think you seeing him for his Senate. Look at the White House. Do you think the captain a wreck. Roger should be reinstated. I mean I you know I I only know a little bit about it so I don't know that I'm in a position to say. Yes I do believe that. This is a moment where we need. Leaders who are transparent. Speak the truth and not as any political reprecussions because they embarrassed somebody. I don't know rules of the Navy. I don't I don't i. That's why has a one way or another because I don't know what the protocols are reasons of protocols enough to to give you an opinion about his firing hiring but I do admire that he was candid. I do believe that he spoke out of the spirit of concern and protecting his people. And I get that I get that you want to make sure that you're safe and So Ego and and senator I mean not to add a layer of for volley on. What is a serious situation and it is very serious but I think we also all as Americans are learning a little bit about more about ourselves as we shelter in place in about our spouses and You know I've heard you say that you and doug are cooking up a storm and you are. You are known to be a pretty avid chef So I wanNA know Algebra Salem's Jeff Yes. Yes but what's what's what's your best quarantine meal and like much of the country. Do you have a sour dough starter going you know our in our apartment in DC right so But I will tell you who. I've been doing a lot of like many people I stocked up on dried beans and so like I eat garbanzo beans split peas lentils and I have like many different ways like last night And then you know what I've been doing also everything that I'm clicking on cooking at least twice as much of it so that I can freeze half of it because there is just no way to cook every meal every day and keep you know doing what I need to do. In terms of my role as a senator so but so like I did this big pot like been black beans so they also get. Here's the thing about stocking up. Okay got to have good good salt. Bijon mustard garlic if you had and then always keep on hands and peppers like Serano and in you know at least a Coupla non-holiday paying no there's almost anything you can do. If you have some of those basic ingredients and onions I have become a hoarder of. I'm I think we have our headline now Harris Hordes. I mean because we we are really trying not to go to the grocery store to off and has every right so when we go we go and get everything but anyway so last night we had the black beans and they're just phenomenal. But I also have kept like chipotle and other dried chillies and then you know you could do that if you be for pork. You can make like Ryan that up and make a nice marinade over night. Just do like some minced garlic with that and a little chili powder and roasts. That thing really slowly. That's the other thing. I'm now doing a lot of slow cooking because I am home all day long so it can have these great recipes. That just you know. Put that Dutch oven in the oven for four hours. And it's magical there. Wow I think we've got a whole youtube series cooking with. I'm going to sign you up for another podcast affect if this keeps going on and it probably is gone for a while longer when you do go to grocery store get dried beans like. I have to do the night before just so come like I do white ends and with like an Italian away and just Cook Them. And then after they're cooked just saute up some chop rosemary and garlic in olive oil about a quarter. I throw a candidate. Tomatoes and trump carefully. Of course it so come on and it just anyway. Yeah recipe book to come there. Go looking forward to it. Thanks so much for being on. It's all political. It's good to talk to you. "In Congress for years but quote. Nobody likes him. Nobody wants to work with them. He got nothing done and quote and asked defer she's would work. You know work form. If he were the nominees like she was like noncommittal. Now she's walked that back a little bit yes But what's what's the impact of something like this at at this stage of the game a couple of weeks before Iowa votes standards Sanders moving up in the polls a little bit. What's but also it just reopened a lot of stuff? That's always there. What's what's the impact of that for someone's doing the work that you're doing? It was as far beyond media to Secretary Clinton what she can and cannot say But what it is but what I will I will say is that it's we have to figure out once is primarily has done how we as how we as progressives can heal and come back together which. I'm confident we will do. We all have in common enemy in the White House and while I think. That comment is unhelpful. I think that the larger progressive movement now sees what is like to have this this gentleman in the White House gentleman for lack of a better etter. We're in the White House and what he is doing to our country and I think that we understand that we can't let arguments or our disagreements policy differences. Take US away from our job is the end of the day which is to defeat this president and to restore our our democracy democracy that works for everyone. So you're you. Do you think that having that common enemy will go a long way towards not that we won't see the splits in the Democratic Party that we did three four. Yes I definitely think that will be the case. It's going to be contentious up until the nomination and we. We should all recognize that these are they all have very passionate supporters who believe in their policies and they want their person to win. I certainly understand that. But from what I'm seeing in DC. What I'm seeing even when I go to states when I would I even when I speak to organizations progressive organizations that have actually the endorsed in this race? They still say yes. We have endorsed Bernie. Yes we have endorsed Elizabeth Warren but if they are not the nominee we are still going to support whomever emerges out of this primary. And I'm talking about like the Working Families Party. I'm talking about community. Change a whole bunch of different organizations. They are very passionate about who they are supporting. But the end of the day from what they're saying and also just from our planning efforts I can tell we we are going to work as a collaborative effort. And what did you We've seen the last couple of debates The last one in particular all white candidates dates three of them in their seventies. Do you have any concerns that this is going to depress turnout from communities of color or young voters. Yes I I do and I think we should all be aware of that. I I get worried when Our debate stage looks like a Republican debate instead of a democratic. Take a look worse versus Rubio I am I am. I am very very worried about that. I think that whoever emerges with the nomination needs to make sure they have a plan on how they're going to engage and ultimately activate of people of color and I think that organizations like mine in particular who are well suited to do this or going to be focused on that regardless of who the nominees and again I I am I am. I think that Obama is a once in a lifetime president. I think that he had the ability to motivate people in a way that I may never see again So we can't. We can't look for another Obama so so we can't we. Should we give up on the idea of the Obama coalition and wait for a war and coalition or a sanders or abide nurse up like that. I think I think the coalition is there. I I think the coalition came together and help give Nancy Pelosi the speaker gavel right so I think the coalition is there. I'm saying is that the Museum Hasim that President Obama created around his candidacy. We can't rely upon that to win this coming November. What we you can rely upon is sound organizing around issues that people care about and using those issues to create enthusiasm that we need to defeat this president so this is going to be like like a a grinded out? Yes grinded out game. This is going to be a long year long as an soaring stadium. Filling events like Obama CA. I was talking to someone the other day at this. Not At this point of the race but within a month or so he was filling up arenas dues getting massive crowds. You're right I don't see anyone anyone in this crowd doing that. I'm unsure. I think time will tell but also let's talk about the the the large massive crowds that are attending all of these marches that that activism is there but we have to translate that activism into people actually going to vote. And that's not always easy. Just Morris thank you so much for being here I even despite the fact that from Philly. What did he get into the greedy controversy? Oh God spared you on that. Let let let you go without having to comment on gritty. Let that be out. Thanks so much no problem. Thank you Joe. I'd like to thank you all for listening. "Because the fastest growing segment of the American workforce people in their seventies so the candidates are actually mirroring mirroring. What is happening to all of us? Retirement would set at a time. When the average age of death was sixty seven announced? Most people will live twenty years longer. We also have so there are two things one is your life span and the other is your health span and our health span is much longer so people are cognitively and physically able to do things things that we used to do in middle aged adulthood. Well into elder hood. Now we are. You know kind of like people don't realize that adolescence didn't exist as a time of life until child labor laws and the industrial revolution. That means it's less than one hundred and fifty years old and yet and you know try and deal with American culture avoiding adolescence totally impossible so we are the generation that is redefining this new stage of life which many of the candidates fall into? I don't know that fifties are the best you know. People are are more often more stressed advantaged people And I think we could argue that the people who have the wherewithal to run for office are generally in the advantaged group Tend and do have much higher levels of anxiety and less happiness in middle age and become more happier eight more happier become happier more confident do know my grammar as a sign or clear priorities. Gosh I hope really early which would be very disappointing But be much clearer on priorities And in some ways you know we tend to focus only on the negatives of old age when we talk about the older candidates and and we focus less on the positives on that the understanding that is gained over a long life of things Being more popular and less popular of things changing of the values that really matter of the shortsightedness of politics and the long-term harms that are often done and hand a person who doesn't have his whole career ahead of them or isn't in their fifties with forty years of ambition. Going might focus more on doing doing the right thing. Instead of the thing that will get him or her elected again. The round. Look so I think there are a variety of advantages and as with all things old age we tend to speak up the negative and you just ignore the positive. Yeah that's a big when some people listening to this there'd be might be heading grandma and GRANDPA's house for Thanksgiving And so what some things to keep in mind some positives about you know when you're hanging out with grandma and GRANDPA are your Godmother a grant godfather whatever That that that might be to keep in mind with this is mostly been like blew out people falling down and in deteriorating erasing. What are some positives about about you know being in your seventies and eighties and beyond right so there are so many things people are often Emotionally more healthy and have perspective on things. Because they've seen sings that might have sent them into a crisis earlier. That went okay. It worked when you look at emotional intelligence. I mean there's a little bit of mixed data but overall it seems to go up It's also true that when you look at diversity of workplaces and I'm assuming the same holds true families although I haven't seen studies of this The diversity quotient that leads to the most highly functional final and productive teams is having people of different ages And I think we tend to look at workers and assume we want What's often referred to as equality? Not We want the same thing from everyone and it turns out the most functional teams may be the most functional political teams may be the most functional families are ones that. Don't look for the same thing from everybody but look for what's called equity look for something of value from everyone Recognize the people have different needs and different strengths at different ages And maybe you do trades you know like Grandma and GRANDPA or your parents might have some pretty good wisdom dating advice or work advice or you know. Should you put all your money in that. Or should you wait and see given what's going on And you know maybe the tire needs changing. And it's getting a little harder to you know turn the Ja- using the the bolts or something as you get older tire often so you can help with that with your greater strength which you tend to have an youth youth. I was tempted to go with the computer thing. Right which is again. That's somewhat cliche. Although you know if they're asking you about snapchat they might need the hand with that. Yeah I even need a hand to that point yet. Thank you so much for being on its own. It was really fun. Thanks for having me. I'd like to thank you all for listening. It should always be Air Canada center, but Scotiabank arena after what was a highly entertaining game one and a lot of ways not just because of the encore performance from both teams. But one of the most raucous environments, I think I've ever been a part of what did you guys just think? What the fan base was able to to do in what was the first finals game in Canada Canadian history. Well, I'd like from the start to national anthems, and they did the Canadian national anthem. And the, the people were seeing that, that gave me chills that was spectacular. I thought the crowd was great atmosphere is great. And it's, it's a definite home. You talk about the, the worst having home court thing with their their fans. These guys gotta going. Yeah. I mean, that was basically, kind of what I wrote my whole column about was just the vibe in the city and heloc cited people are, you know, there's, you know, this was just an outpost that was kind of a place people, even forgot was in the NBA. I mean you didn't because you would come once a year, but for a lot of people is just like, really Toronto as a team, that's seems weird. And you know they they their existence. They started ninety five you know, they weren't as bad as the warriors were doing that long stretch with only one playoff appearance, but they were pretty. They had pretty futile years. And now peeler just like so fired up. And so.
