Deadlines put it as part of the life of the author especially when you do support yourself by writing. You always have deadlines as one of my teachers. Love to say no project ever done. They're only deadlines and i. I live in die by my deadline. So hopefully i won't die. Though so the coal rate is will get the editor still. Get a little bit of a break from that. I always enjoy this part. Where the stories and draghi crazy and you get to send it off and you don't have to think of it. I always enjoy this time away. So i just box them. Altogether originally the idea was released them individually but this was wait for kindle vella and that turned out not to be a great idea. It wasn't easy for me to mark. So this is another thing. I'm curious about Kindle 'cause i have tried series before or seasons before in a bit stuttered so assyria. I'm wondering if amazon can make it better for all of us but any so all six episodes of season three set has been bundled into so how many just i didn't know how many words talking six upside seasonably season three. I happen to know on is clocking in about a little over sixty k. Each episode is usually around my amos. Ten thousand but i know with like season three The first few were closer to eleven in the last you were closer to nine so it kind of varies but mike. My goal for each season is around sixty k. In-cabin times we couldn't go out for dinner. We got a fancy gonna delivered so this time round. We went to a seafood restaurant up in ellington and had a delicious meal up there. Is lincoln baby schlep. But we did it a little bit other but it's a charming little area to go to well. We used to live nearby so we have fond memories. We we coated back in the day in lynton. My nights i think a going up a little bit because they into be more but we safely were in the six to seven hundred nights area say. Suffice it to say that. I've got a bit of work ahead of me over. "I hope that's not the case because this does give us another avenue of new set of readers. I was reading an article recently about netflix. There having quite a challenge getting new subscribers because they've already pretty much signed up all of the young ones and other trying to figure out how to get the oldies to sign up. Because like you say we're a bit more resistant to it in their dislike naturally like. Oh yeah this Do this act. This is great. I don't have to pay a paper. Cable cut the cord. so it's kind of opposite of netflix. A problem because they're going after. The older generation in amazon is trying to go after the younger generation. So this carries. I was gonna turn out but again extremely early days answer. We might have more updates as we go. Because that's what i've learned in the week that i've been cramming about villa while done needed to feed it very good cramming and you'll thinking you've thinking of humanity yeah with a random but the another another quirk is you can only have one author name. She can't do so we're like well. How do we listen. Name do we. List it markets in mcleod. I'm leaning towards tv macleod. "They agreed to go in the vela and they're already pissed but that always happens with new things. So how'd you get paid the first three episodes of your cereal. Cereal are free to readers. And then after that the way people purchase their new episodes after the first three that are free to the reader. So you really have to hope those readers in the first three episodes with that's kind of normal with a bookie by chapter three. You really want your reader hunt. So they have Use tokens to purchase the next episode. In this is where a lot of authors are getting upset because when you sign up for kindle villa. They're automatically giving you two hundred free tokens and if those readers use. Those free tokens. You're not getting paid for them. So this is one of the things that a lot of major corporations do especially with the new service. Thank you if they try to give as much they try to hook you into the new service so i think some authors are like well. I signed up. I know not getting paid for this. Because if people are using free tokens and that's not fair and ice either point but i think it was also in terms of service which we all know. The terms of service of everything is very convoluted and hard to read so there is some confusion about that in. There's some frustration but it gets a little trickier again because this is you know. This is the way of the world. Everything has catches so readers by token since so you can get like and by unlike packages. So for instance if you buy. Two hundred tokens is trudeau. This goes back to the whole thinking that a lot of the industry experts can't remember how many times i've heard like especially the indie writers being like smaller is going to become the new thing. "My new book is a chugging along. I have six chapters to go. As i'm as colinas and then i have to get back to it. Probably shaking my head. Law at my net jude. It's a bit short now. "I'm a bit stressed these days. Because i am in the process of buying a new car actually is not a new car. A used car but i'm the process of buying. It hasn't been smooth so far on just like every other Industry at the moment in everyone's dealing with the pandemic in with shortages and everything. So i had to request a car from new york. It arrived i went to the test. Drive it they found out that the title did not arrive with a car. So i could not test drive it because they literally couldn't let me by the car because he didn't have the title so days later i got the call in. I can go in and test drive at. The title finally arrived in so i did. I went in Yesterday i tested the car liked it and now is going through the final lake mechanic checking everything since it is a used car in order in massachusetts to buy a car. You have to have proof of car insurance and currently. I don't own a car. So i don't have car insurance. And in order to perchance car insurance. I need a license plate. Number in vin number which. I will have a sign of paperwork when i buy the car. But i'm gonna call them in a row i that happens a lot because they can't be the first person on the planet to buy a car who doesn't have car yet but this oil we're gonna to call me the dealership and be like i wanna part purchases. Car can get this insurance about ready to sign this big check. Look so this. One of those things were is another headache trying to deal with. I'm trying to track down building managers when you get a parking permit so i don't get towed. "Tip final tip when you're considering katie piece elect and kindle villa. What your value is. How much do you feel you bring the table. And how much do you think you should be compensated for that. If you're just looking for an avenue to just publish 'cause you love the craft of writing this might be for you but if you're the type of person that doesn't really want to grind it out for say twenty five cents for every purchase or twenty two cents There's also the risk versus reward because katie p select is a proven commodity. Many people have made a lucrative living going to kdp select and some continue to do that whereas some people don't even katie piece left at all they just do it on their own and the wide but we know the proven we. It's all about the devil you know. And so with kindle vela. They're really the devil. We don't know just yet so be very careful. It's going to be about risk versus reward. Because you're probably going to have to write about three plus episodes. Get that all queued up before launches so that way you can have people reading and binging your content and you can keep up with that demand Really there's not too much of a risk if you ask me because you're only out a time. Let's say you took all the time to write. You got it edited you gotta proof-read you got it formatted you gotta cover for and such like that. Let's just say for instance you find. "No exclusivity agreement for the print book or the audio book when you enroll and katie piece elect for that given e book eric. What kindle vela ooh boy so it's been about a few weeks now and everybody's still kinda buzzing about it and ask me my thoughts about kindle vela essentially the kindle vela system is an app based system for the customers it has not launched yet right. Now it's only a open in beta and available to authors and self publishers and it essentially is a six hundred to five thousand word episodic short read with an exclusivity agreement very similar to katy piece lacked. It actually is even exclusive firm katie piece select. Meaning that when you publish a short read to kindle vela you are not to take that publish shut on katie piece. Elect conversely speaking if you've already published that short read over on katie p in katie piece elect kindle valid does not want it. They only want fresh new content. None of this stuff. That's been spun Her some ambiguous stuff. And i go into detail about that in this past week. But let's just push forward here. Let's talk about the format it's available in all right so with katie piece elect could about anything. You want all right doc doc. Pd pdf e. pob For a limited time. Moby you get so many things you can upload katie p select that is not an issue if you wanna have a ton of images inside your book. You can do that. If you wanna have gramps in bullet points in emojis a you can do that can novella. Not so much. You can come with a doc or docx ex. But you're gonna essentially have to copy and paste that over into their online editor. This is not your normal p type situation. Yes there's many things they share in common especially when it comes to uploading the data but beyond that formatting happens within the dashboard itself and they're only supporting bold underlying in italics that's it no graphs charts no images nothing fancy so they really are catering to fiction authors and more importantly if they're catering to fiction authors are to fiction readers so with all that being said does that mean that nonfiction is out here in the cold no is actually one category out of dozens of categories for nonfiction. Is it one category. So they still will take that. It's episodic all right pushing forward. What about the perks with katie piece. Elect you get the five day.

"I've got this cool idea that i envisioned as a serial. And here's it's time but but and here's here's the thing that kind of made me hawes Because the readership is different. It's skews younger And my readers for my existing series of cozy. Mysteries are older. They're cozy mystery readers stews skew a little bit And there are less so there. Perhaps less likely to pick up can develop. Who knows though. It's not you know lunch out. We don't know but that was kind of a decision point for me that if you have an readership that is a little bit older. Or even if you don't because we know that serial readers are not a complete overlap with novel-readers you're gonna be reaching a new audience not necessarily your existing folks and they won't necessarily be folks you can pull into your novel audience. So that is a consideration. If you're deciding whether or not to make a go of it with kindle bella argue truly exploring a new audience or are you letting yourself get distracted by the new shiny thing and that was something that has really kind of bothered me for a few weeks and why. I really put off recording this episode. You know and. I've i've put a lot of effort into my cozy mysteries the past few years and on top of that. I have a Another project going on with children's books at i'm working on this summer and into the fall and so that's already a new audience children's picture books and go. Don't cozy mysteries. They don't go together. I've already made one decision to split my audience so this would be yet. Perhaps a third branch of that and did i really want to go down that road because that comes with extra marketing extra strategizing extra a lot of things and you know that's a consideration to make. So i really grappled with whether i was being distracted by the newest shiny thing instead of doubling down on what i knew worked.

"Sort of system for kindle valla as well but again we don't really know so that's one thing that we can at least kind of we kind of know kind of extrapolate now. What do we know about the readership of kendall valla. We know about the readership of cereals on other platforms and from talking to other authors from reading the posts on facebook groups other social media about authors who are heavily involved in cereals. We know that these readers do skew younger than the general reading population. We know that there are some genres like why a romance that do really well in cereals and we know that they're probably they're less likely to Jump to novels than near someone who maybe downloads a free book in. Ku they might enjoy that author and then go buy their other novels Or other free to them. Book in that's in kindle unlimited then go by other novels that aren't in kendall unlimited that. They're they're novel consumers but cereal readers aren't necessarily novel-readers there you know there's some overlap but it's a different market altogether. So what does this museum when we think about these things. And what does this mean in terms of making a decision on whether or not to pursue kendall allah. Because i'll be honest. I i can't i can't go through everybody's everybody's intricacies end and thoughts on this but i'll tell you guys a mind because i was really excited by this idea and i i've been interested in celery cereals for a while. It was a structure that i like And as a podcast the idea of the weekly content is definitely appealing to me but it was something that i'd had several ideas that kind of came too late for the cereals phenomenon design the fad was over. I had one that. I envisioned first cereal. And then i. I could bleed and packaged it into a book and actually to touch back on one thing. We do know about kindle bella. They're not looking for books broken up and they're not looking for content. That's freely available elsewhere. Those those are the content freely about billable elsewhere thing. That is something that you can't put on vella. So i have now kind of barnes. My chances to do that story developed. Because i patched it up into a novel instead of doing a serial but i have some other ideas for things that were cereal and i thought maybe one day. I'll find the right forum for this. Maybe when i have time and now that i've developed by illustration skill. I'll turn this into a comic an ongoing comic. But now i've like okay..
