"I would love to see Sean Evans get a hold of some of these and use them to make some sauce for hot ones. NASA astronauts have successfully grown chili peppers in space and used them to make tacos. Apparently taco Tuesday has been a thing on the ISS for a while as astronaut Meghan mcarthur in a tweet referred to the addition of the chilies as making this batch of space tacos her best yet. She also posted a photo of a taco decked out with fajita beef rehydrated tomatoes, artichokes and chilies, floating in space. Well, inside the space station. But, you know, that's still in space, and it was floating all on its own. This anti gravity space taco is absolutely delighting me. You can see the photo of it at the link in the show notes, quoting NPR. As part of NASA's plant habitat O four investigation, scientists began growing chili peppers aboard the ISS in July in an effort to understand more about plant microbe interactions in space, NASA said. Astronauts have grown other crops such as lettuce and radishes in space before, but peppers are more difficult to grow in space because they take a relatively long time to germinate and bear fruit. Given that NASA says these peppers represent one of the most complex plant experiments conducted on the space station to date. And here's how growing peppers in space works, quoting NASA, a team at NASA's Kennedy Space Center sanitized and planted 48 pepper seeds in a device called a science carrier that contains baked clay for roots to grow in and it controlled release fertilizer, specially formulated for the peppers. The science carrier launched to the space station aboard SpaceX's 23rd cargo resupplying mission with NASA, the space carrier fits into the advanced plant habitat or APH, the largest of three plant growth chambers aboard the orbiting lab. The APH is about the size of a large microwave oven, and has more than a 180 sensors and controls for monitoring, plant growth and the environment. NASA astronaut Shane kimbrough placed these science carrier in the APH and added water to start the experiment on July 12th, 2021. A team at Kennedy has continuously monitored the experiment from earth controlling watering, lighting and other environmental conditions. Working together with researchers, the crew in orbit has regularly checked on the peppers and performed horticultural tasks like cleaning plant debris from the APH, as well as reducing the number of pepper plants down to four. Peppers are self pollinating, and once pollination occurs, some flowers will start forming peppers 24 to 48 hours later. To ensure the flowers in orbit pollinated, the team at NASA's Kennedy Space Center instructed APH to run its fans at variable rates to create a gentle breeze in microgravity to agitate the flowers and encourage the transfer of pollen..

"And that way there there's kind of a collective push behind it instead of just having a few of the stronger members doing where we're just like all right big guys say but what about the small guys. Sure that's part of it. I also think that in the past it was we think abt forties behind this and china would say no. They're not that's ridiculous and what's different here is a forty is behind it. We're tired of it and we need you to stop now stopping short of saying and we're going to do sanctions. Which would be more provocative. But again i point out that china has not been dismissive of this china. Hasn't done their usual shrug of like You're imagining things i imagine. They will But just the fact that they're posing a little longer to think about it is is some sort of an effect whether that will turn into anything or not who knows And also i I think the most practical part of this is having a unified document that says. Hey here's some mitigation. Here's some best practices. We're calling you out you don't have to even take responsibility. We know what you're doing and here's how to stop world. Maybe one of the more powerful parts of the entire statement. And you know what might turn into something. What sarah chili peppers seeds. Hear me us here. Yeah actually turned into something. I'm unlike rhetoric. Nasa astronauts are growing red and green chili peppers on the international space station for what nasa says will be one of the longest and most challenging plant experiments attempted aboard the orbital lab the forty eight chili pepper seeds hitched a ride to the station in june on a space x commercial resupply services mission and. Nasr's shane kimbrough inserted the seeds they were inside of science carrier device into the advanced plant habitat or ap h on july twelfth. The is the largest plant growth facility on the sporting one hundred eighty sensors and even allowing partial control from the kennedy space center back on earth to make sure those peppers are looking okay. I can't remember which one but will link that up in the show notes but we talk about using their natural instincts as a reinforcement for behavior that we want right so an example of the rate is before i let waylon run chase bunnies i ask him to walk with me. Pay attention to me maintained a loose leash. I asked him to sit unleash him. And then i release them to go and chase bunnies. So i've used chasing bunnies as the reinforcement for paying beautiful attention to me. And i think that it's hard to wrap our minds around in the beginning but once you start to see at work in real time ray where you know oftentimes when i released wayland to go and chase buddies chase a bunny and then super-quick right back to me like hey mom. What are we doing here rate when before you know like in his early days i felt like those this horrible power struggle. Where like all he cared about buddies. But we've really kind of worked as a team in like now. I'm the cool mom right because we've let them chase bunnies Obviously you know you can't recreate that with everything. But i do find that. "I remember going to college, actually, in high school that was in high school I became and just just In awe of his ability to play guitar so much so that I took up guitar myself. Obviously I didn't follow through it in practice enough, and I didn't prepare enough but I had fun playing with it. But he was the one that inspired me to really get out there and give that give that instrument a shot until today. I am such a A fan favorite of that instrument that I just love all of the eighties and nineties guitar players of the time Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Vie, and certainly Joseph Troiani, just to name a few, But Eddie Van Halen, by far is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, and I just want to pay person attribute to him. He's made an impact on the lives of so many, but also myself and the reason I want to use ideas a chance to really Segway into the preparation to this talk about Preparing is because many people don't know his story. He came up. He is actually the child. Him and brother Alex was the drummer Van Halen. They grew up two parents. Ah, makes parents. One was Dutch. One was Indonesia and they grew up in the Netherlands and back in those days. Hey, had it rough. He was, believe it or not, he was a product of racism. So so much so that their parents decided to move to the US and came here with nothing and settled into a multi family home, and that's where he still faced racism back in the sixties. I was just a tough upbringing, but his escape was playing. His father was a musician. So he sort of had that that bug of plain musical instrument and his brother, but they would prepare and prepare and play and play and play with the hopes of one day being able to Make it and they did. And boy did he make it big, big time? So, taking a page out of that, Let me talk about preparation and the importance of it. As I said earlier. Your preparation predicts your destination. How well you prepare is going to determine where you arrive, so if the key to arriving at a desired destination By the way, Destination has served. You served your family serves a business serves your academic serves your community. If the key is and how will you prepare? Then the preparation has to be diligent, strategic well thought out, and, more importantly, most importantly, well executed. Let me give it to your street. You cannot win your way to success. Let me just make that you cannot win your way to success Thriving does not live on the same street as haphazard and sloppy. You cannot short change your prep time. Otherwise, you'll fall short of where you wanted to arrive. Let me explain something to you. I've met some of the most polished, informed, educated sound people. You could ever meet. Yet they are living below their potential and experiencing a life. A far cry from what they have been working so hard for for cry. You know why they don't invest quality time and energy into their preparation. So How do you prepare? An order will arrive at a place that you're proud of a place that you are excited about. How do you prepare? You prepare with intention. You prepare with intention. You go about doing it in a way that has meaning. It has structure has accountability and most importantly, it has an end in mind. Preparation cannot be an afterthought or something you cram like cramming for a last minute test. It takes thought it takes intention. And most importantly, as I said, it also takes you being committed with an end result that will serve you. That being said You must know why you're preparing. You must have a picture of where you'd like to go because that will motivate your preparation. Preparation will always be an indication of how well you arrive where you arrived. And by the way, it'll be a great indication how well you perform. So don't short change your preparation if you are Bent. An intent. On thriving guys our guest want when when we come back. He's no stranger to preparation. That's probably his middle name. Dr. Dennis Kimbrough's going to join us and he's got a word or two to say about preparation and the importance of that. And I can't think of a better person to expound on that concept. Then Dr Dennis Kimbrough, he'll be back after the break. Having a hard time finding commercial funding. Is.
Cubs extend their winning streak to 4 behind Alec Mills' 7 innings of 3-hit ball in a 2-0 victory over the Royals
"Baseball games last night. Cubs rolling along behind Alec Mills cheese Guy's been fabulous, gave up two runs to Nick Castano's In Cincinnati, and that was it seven shutout yesterday. Cubs went to nothing. And I loved again, David Ross. Not being wedded to. He's my closer. I got to give the ball the correct Kimbrough because I don't give it to Craig Kimbrel. What am I saying? David Ross absolutely says that a Joe Madden impression is that what you were doing yesterday, you say wasn't professional. And now that's the voice. I did not say He wasn't professional. Yes, you did. But that's the Joe Maddon voice you're using. Well, who is that? That was just mean. Maybe. Maybe in funny. I I'm just telling you Most managers would have gotten on paying him $68 million. That's my closer. I got to give him a baseball. What do you want me to do? I can only put out there who they give me. You know that voice that you do? It sounds like you're pinching your nose as you do the voice, But you're not. It's quite the skill. Isn't that how he sounds standing? Yeah. How do you do that? You're like, you know, like it Sounds like you're pinching your nose easily. I'm not pinching my nose. All I know is that gave me a 16 million Now they're closer. And I got important man. That's what you want me to do. What I like to do

"Chevrolet I am the aforementioned Kimbrough as we now take a second step into Memorial Day weekend in what would have been an unbelievable weekend in sports right this they would have just been absolutely off the charts the Indianapolis five hundred the coca Cola six hundred the red seemingly somewhere in the standings we had hoped that they would be close to the top of the National League central division we will be talking about many camps with the bangles and our first look at Joe Berle actually doing drills as a Cincinnati Bengal and we'd be getting ready for summer vacation wherever that may be staycation here in Cincinnati it maybe kings island or other places maybe going to the beach hell happened Cincinnati winds up in Hilton head in the summertime anyway that's where maybe you were headed this summer and now of course not maybe were not we're definitely not there is no Indianapolis five hundred today the Bengals have not held an in person work out yet and the Reds have yet to take the field leaving the field in mid March because of the corona virus pandemic and here we are but yet there is some sort of light at the end of the tunnel and it's not an oncoming locomotive Major League Baseball players and the owners are negotiating trying to get some semblance of a season out here at sometime around July fourth they're quibbling now over millions a bad optic to be sure given the fact that thirty eight million Americans are out of work but yet they're talking the NFL seems to be on track to play games this fall you may not be able to go to games but there will be games and the NFL long ago became account sport nodded in stadium experience the minute they lifted the local blackout rules they gave their heart mind and soul to the television networks but the big issue the real problem that's their exports in the face right now is not in the NFL and its not Major League Baseball and it's not auto racing it's not even golf which strangely enough is back today Tiger Woods Peyton manning Phil Mickelson Tom Brady in a made for television of that it will happen in the PGA tour will kick in in a couple of weeks no no no the real problem in sports is college athletics college athletics are on death watch right now they missed the NCAA tournament because of the pandemic and that cost college basketball that cost universities three hundred and seventy five million dollars in lost revenue and a lot of that revenue is used to float sports that don't carry their own weight things like track and field things like soccer things white baseball that by and large don't draw enormous crowds and bring in the enormous ticket revenue and now the specter of no college football this year has universities really breaking a sweat already we've seen furloughs at universities all across the country in their athletic departments Arizona Kansas Minnesota southern cal even local already we've seen the mid American conference announced multiple scheduling changes and dropping conference tournaments in eight sports Bowling Green got rid of baseball Akron said it's eliminating men's cross country men's golf and women's tennis and of course the university of Cincinnati has already dropped its men's soccer program saving the university eight hundred and seventy five thousand dollars ironically a large chunk of that eight hundred seventy five thousand dollars will go to float portions of its football program but what if there is no football ESPN did a massive study this week it talked athletic directors a talk to television rights holders a talk to athletes to talk to just about everybody wrapped up in college sports and they came to this conclusion which to me is absolutely frightening if there is no college football this year this sixty five power five schools Josh the power five schools not the university of Cincinnati not the university of Houston not Miami DOT Ohio University just the sixty five power five schools would collectively lose more than four billion and that's with a B. billion in football revenue and at least one point two billion dollars of that would be due to a lost ticket revenue each power five school each power five school would see it average loss of sixty two billion dollars in football sixty two million dollars off the height of any athletic program is absolutely devastating football probably could survive in some way shape or form a few cuts here a few cuts there a few few scholarships here maybe more water to lessen the traveling party basketball could probably survive as well with a few cuts in some other places as well but all of the other sports at the universities all of the other scholarships handed out to players high school players male and female to play those sports they would be gone with the corona virus it's staggering public school power five athletic departments on average made nearly half of their total operating revenue from football M. fourteen percent which doesn't seem like a large number but it is if you're a Miami you deserve your totally always deserve your Ohio University it is a lot of money fourteen percent came from football ticket sales of course the backdrop of all this is who is going to be allowed into a stadium to watch a football game this fall there will be clamoring for tickets fighting and clawing and there will be a lot of people who will not just be hurt but might even take to the courts dig this Ohio state athletic director gene Smith said this week that Ohio stadium with a normal capacity as you well know of over one hundred thousand would hold a crowd closer to two twenty two twenty two thousand fans for football this fall and if everything goes right if it's a ratty Kate it from the state of Ohio that being the corona virus if everything in the state is up and running if every student enrolled at Ohio State University is actually on campus and taking classes and not doing it remotely because of the virus if everything went right you might get forty to fifty thousand people in that stadium they would determine who gets the tickets buy a lottery system the athletic department would award a point system my guess is whose hold up a season ticket the longest faculty staff student donors media parents other groups would be and that last but at least half of who go to those games at Ohio stadium at least half and more probably seventy percent would be left in the cold and left outside and that's lost ticket revenue so how does that affect what goes on with the rest of the sports at Ohio state we'll do the math as I mentioned all of these other smaller universities are dropping sports simply because they can't get them financed scholarships to high school athletes will leave as well with them the meantime schools are going to try and have to figure out how to operate in the brave not so New World of limited revenue yeah the pandemic has hit a number of places a number of ways and a number of things and ways that they never even imagined in ticket sales power five schools again from the big athletic conference's power five schools would collectively lose three hundred and three million dollars in revenue that's just on game day spending that's just on game day spending it doesn't include tickets that's parking that's concessions that's merchandise it's everything else that goes along with it in addition to the four billion those schools would lose in television revenue they would also lose three hundred and three million in non ticket revenue and we've already given you the figure for ticket revenues one point three billion dollars so when we look at the landscape of sports on this Memorial Day weekend we can see the NFL it goes on no matter what the NFL if there was a World War being fought on this soil they would still play football we saw exactly what baseball happened to happen a baseball everybody broke camp in March went home now they're trying to figure out how and if and why they get a season going by July fourth we will eventually see individually contested sports they're easily controllable golf tennis I think they're both back in some way shape or form in a big passion and soon Galp within weeks that is probably within a couple of months a college football and college basketball have real problems right now and if you root for any of those schools if you hold season tickets if you're a donor for the university of Cincinnati Xavier or if you're a donor or booster for Ohio state or Kentucky or Indiana two thousand and twenty may not be the kind of season that you are anticipating you may not get any season at all it's coming up on nine sixteen welcome to Sunday morning sports talk don't mean to be a Downer about college sports just a realist states are opening up all over the country we might even be able to go to church at some point next week we'll see what the lawsuit told on the show today Maury brown more brown writes about the business of sports performs magazines but on my show many times I wanted to get his thoughts not just on what I just was talking about but also I want Morris thoughts on baseball because the owners are crying poor mouth they will lose all of this revenue because they can't have fans in the stands to watch baseball this year if indeed they have season but they're not giving you the full story and they're not as bad off as you may think or as they may have you think he'll tell you why he studied it he knows where the revenue.

World Series expert picks: Will Red Sox or Dodgers win it all?
"Teams after I saw every one of them playing person Red Sox Astros, Yankees, Indians brewers dodgers and that order. I absolutely think the Boston Red Sox have a better club that the dodgers. And I think they'll win this in six or seven I agree on the six and seven. I don't see us going to sweep like so many people do and part of it is there's not a lot of experience on both sides against you know, the top tier pitching Manny Machado in. Brian dozer have seen Chris sale at ninety seven ninety two and done some damage against them. And the same thing goes with Clayton Kershaw JD Martinez being in the, you know, the front of the order in owning Kershaw relatively in in eleven at bats. Do you sense that the key to the series is the field period? And who could feel out the other team quicker? Well, I think that's part of it. But in a short series in for me in any any series. It's about the pitching in. I am concerned about Chris sale. I'm not as concerned anymore. As much as I was about Kershaw. He's got the Kershaw. Although he's more of a craftsman. Now, you've got three lefties going for the dodgers you got to in the rotation going for the Red Sox. I'll take my chances with the right handed hitting Boston Red Sox against those three lefties. I think that could be a big big advantage when you are looking at a JD Martinez in the middle of the order, Mookie Betts, Bogaerts Nunez, those guys that hit from the right side. I think they're going to do some damage in Fenway. I think it's gonna be a different game in LA. You know, I I worry about them pitching to die like, Cody Bellinger. For example. I think he had to keep the ball up on him. He's an uppercut swinger. You put the ball down. You may never see it again. I think these are pretty quick pitchers at I think the way they pitched the opposition is going. Is going to determine who winces, and that's not a genius comment. Are they it's all about the pitching, no doubt? And I think the way that the the Red Sox has set it up where they have Chris sale going game one David price game two, and then the unknown so ripper Selo and Nathanael have all the will be coming out of the pen in the first game or two depending on what goes on in. Do you sense it they're they're protecting themselves from a a short start from occur sailing game one? Right. I think that's exactly what they're doing. I don't think I would even though they did it all year long. I don't think I would pick up these back to back. I think they are doing it. Look, I think Alex Cora was the manager of the year. He and bo-, you know, bowl mill with the athletics. I don't say anything that guy does. But sale, you know, just coming back from the hospital probably lost a couple pounds said he couldn't afford to lose place at the game of his life. Can he do twice in a row? I think that can that's why I think the Red Sox are a little bit better team at this point of the year much better during the season. But you know, you gotta give credit for the dodgers. They scrapped themselves back into this. They one and I give him credit. I just don't think I think they're going to get get up managed. I think Alex Cora and the Red Sox front office is gonna do the job. A former staffer the Astros and Mariners currently with clubhouse corner dot com is kind enough to join us here. Cambio tonight. Drew harvard. Kevin Franson, we are previewing Dame one of the World Series tomorrow night at Fenway Red Sox dodgers Clayton Kershaw. Chris sale. We've been talking about the pitching birdie. I do want to get more into the offense on both of these teams. We're talking about a dodger team who set their franchise record two hundred and thirty four home runs this year. And then he had the Red Sox knocked around. The Astros was twenty nine runs in five games. Jackie Bradley, jR, driving and nine in the AFC. Yes. So tell me about the offense for both of these teams. And really who do you think has the biggest advantage? But I still think it's the Red Sox the wildcard for me could be mad Kemp he won't be starting at D H. They have to of course, and us mad count in their order in the middle of the order behind Machado and in front of Brian dosier. They're using dosier as well. It's mad Kemp that kind of scares me on the Red Sox. He's the great unknown. He can hit the gaps. He can hit the ball over the played as well rested. He had a terrific first-half tailed off in the second half. He's the guy that when you put put all the chips down now Matt Kemp may pick him up. So he's a guy that scares me in the line. David freezes quietly under the radar. They have some weapons. No question. We all know what Justin Turner can do we've seen. What Chris Taylor can do. This is a very very good club. You've got a pitch to bell. And you're like I said they've got to keep the ball up. The bed is is make them swing at it. Get away from the uppercut swing. Yes. Of course is dangerous. But on the other side of the ball, Mookie Betts. You know, Mookie Betts when I saw him first off in the Arizona fall league. He was playing second base. He was far enough of the best athlete in the air that year. This guy makes things happen. Then he's followed by Benintendi. And granted he's a left-handed hitter. But he can smack the ball, and how do you pitch to JD? So I think these are very well balanced teams. But I think pitching and Fenway is going to be a little bit too much for the dodgers. And I think they're going to lose at Fenway, maybe two games. And then we'll see what happens from there. Yeah. I think it's huge. If you know, especially the the Red Sox hold serve then they can play around a little bit not play around. But having Mookie come in and not really be afraid of like he's going to cost us. Oh, no. Because when he was there this year and even in the past that you could play. Yes. So much range. We all know that. No question about it holiday. Would you like to pick up a Nathan? The scrapping. You know? How would you like to have a number three starter name Nathan Valdez control the ball a hundred miles an hour who the dodgers had at one point. And now he may win a game against you. I mean, there's so many corks to this when you can get a guy like a ball deep during the season as your number three starter. You know, I just love it. I love it for both teams Verney who's your who's the guy you worry about more at the back end. Is it kenley or kimbrel kimbrel against this team? By the way, one for thirty one guys that are on the in the lineup for the dodgers won for thirty one against him. Well, I would never ever say a bad word about kenley Jansen. Is on his game right now. He scares me. But the Red Sox may put these away before its time believe me, and if they can then kenley Jansen if they can't then kenley Jansen is to be reckoned with the guy is still great. I feel sorry for what he's dealing with. And I think he's gritty gutsy, but you know, kimbrough's no slouch either both. These bullpens are really really strong. These are these are two good teams. I don't think they're the best two teams. I think these are two good teams. What's your thoughts on Manny Machado? And just the way he's been pretty demoss postseason. I am old school my friends. It made me sick to my stomach to see what he did it at first base. Tasers secular. It makes me sick to my stomach to see him going into second day slake that and I think the thing that made me the sickest is when you say hustling is not my Cup of tea on a scout, my friends and the first thing that we fill in. There's three things can this guy play is he better than what we have. And number three. Can you play for us? And for me on my form. No he cannot play for us. There are teams that would love to have him though. Run to him. That's fine. You put that guy in the mid west or in some cities, you put them in San Francisco and watching my hustle watch. What happens for me? It's a way over the top. I didn't like it. I don't like it. And I think it's going to hurt him. I I. I think the one team that everyone talked about is the Phillies in him going to I'm calling because out here. He he killed. Yeah. Try this or New York or any other big market that he's projected to go. What do you think is agents said the reaction of his agent when he read those comments, please. You just saw it. You saw him hustle. You saw last game. He played hustling kept his mouth shut. But you know, what damage is done. He is not the type of guy that I think is gonna win you the pennant. I like us a scrapper much more. Yeah. You can knock the fence down. But you know, it's not all about him. You give me a Justin Turner any day of the week. I'll take that Bernie. I think I'm sorry. Go ahead. Why don't you finish your thought? Go ahead. I think in general this dodgers team is a little bit over the over the top for me. I think pointing to your muscles rounding, you know, your home run your home run trots a bit over the top for me. I was just curious on how fast that switch is flipped when you see a guy like minimum Chato acting this way because we see a pro sports, Bernie talent will usually Trump everything else. Yes it well. And that's why I said there are teams that are going to run to them they wanna badly and again for the clubs that I was with with the Houston Astros with the Seattle Mariners. I don't think we would have taken that type of demonstrative behavior. But the game has changed and you either love it or or get out of it and don't pay any attention. I happen to love it. But I don't have to like what I see from some players believe me ninety nine percent of these guys are much different. They're wonderful guys. And all it takes one guy to show off like that. And give other people a bad name. I didn't like it. I guess that clear. Hey, we got you a prediction with the Red Sox in either six or seven but tomorrow night who is your guy is it sale is occurs show. Or is it somebody else? No Kershaw gets game one. I think Kershaw is pitching very well. I worry about sale I worry about about the hospital the stomach. I don't know if he's less weight. I haven't seen him.
