Kimbrough got out of it. And they shut the door. I actually thought it was one of their better wins, especially when Lambert settled down. He looked a little shaky early, but this is what the socks have done. And it reminds me a little bit of Of things I've heard in the last five years. Going back to the Cubs, You know, glory days with the young players is that young players now have to come up and make a difference. Like never before. You are not hazed anymore. You're not treated like a rookie. You are. You are brought in the family and think about the socks, young players, some sheets and Vaughn to Lambert that have contributed and it just wasn't like that in the old days, and I saw that with the 15 16 cubs as well. So I just thought it was a really good win when you consider their one game behind the Astros for home field in that first round, Houston with two runs in the ninth, win it in the 10th so they won last night. You had to keep pace with them. Both these teams are so much better. I'm talking about the Astros and white socks at home than on the road. So I feel like home field is important. Getting healthy is number one. But getting that home field should be right there. One a Jesse. What is the biggest concern you have is this club makes its way to the postseason. I think the White Sox are what a half game or a game behind Houston have home field advantage in that series. I mean, if you really narrow this thing down Mean the matchups White Sox in Houston, or you've got Boston and the Yankees? I mean, it's gonna be a tough gauntlet to run through. What Still you better believe it. Biggest concern you have. Yes, American League playoffs are going to be great. I mean, they are going to be great. Look, maybe three weeks ago, I would have said, making sure Kimbrough and Hendrix have that role. Lockdown. Like you know, it was a little shaky there for a moment, mostly on Kimbrel's part pitching in the eighth, and by the way, he came into a dirty inning last night, which I think is an important sort of experience for him. He hasn't done that a ton in his career. He gave up a hit, but then he shut the door. I like that idea getting him in there and some dirty innings. But that's not my concern. I think it's obvious that there are injuries on the mound. Now, something they've avoided. All season are happening at the worst time of year. It's a knee for Lance Lynn. Okay, probably not a big deal. Giolito leg injury, Probably not a big deal, but certainly rodent now being pushed back after that injured list stint is a concern. I don't think there's any doubt The bigger picture. If you think about it, the three of them, you know, might get a couple starts here as the season Weinstein. But are they going to be on the role? You want to see them on a roll? Now? Maybe. You know, I asked you a little about this. Maybe it only takes one start. If you're out for a couple weeks, and you have that good ones start at the end of September. That's all you need. But as a fan, if you've watched them all season, I think you feel a little nervous. Jay, could you tell me When they're not in the lineup in September, right? Yeah, you want to see them rolling and right now they're not rolling because they're not pitching. My hope is is that at the end of you know, at the end of September, we will be able to see a lot of these guys healthy lens Judge Alito's I don't want them to take a step back when they do return. I want them to be right on target as they were when they were in the rotation. And my question is about Tim Anderson. So it is interesting to watch Tim because Tim was just taking time off before he was in the on the injured list. But there's no timetable. What have you heard about Tim? As far as his return is an imminent I think they're just being cautious. I really do extra cautious. Remember, he played through some of this. I think if this was the playoffs, he'd be playing where If this was the playoffs, you'd still be a little nervous about Rodin or the other injuries. To that staff. So I I, You know, he's on the eye else. We're gonna take the full 10 days. You don't have to ask to be in the lineup every day. So let's see how this plays out. I mean, it's not like he was Ever a guy that had to leave a game, right? It was just like their maintenance with these legs. And Gheit. Yeah, that he uses like so much for his game both offensively and defensively. I'm not overly concerned. I'm just not with Tim Anderson. Now again, almost like the pictures, though You want to see him in the lineup for about 23 weeks just to get on that role. Maybe it just means, you know, maybe it just means 10 games, whatever it is, whatever the amount is, and I tried to ask Giolito that So what do you need to feel like you're rolling, and he really didn't have a great answer. And maybe these players just don't know because they have never, you know, other than last year, they have been through this sort of prepping for the playoffs and certainly not over 1 62 J. Hood. So I think I'm okay with Anderson. But you're right if he's hurting, that's a big question Mark because they're basically a 500 team without him in the lineup, But you have to hope that all the time off Now we'll get the legs ready for the For the stretch. Does that surprise you that the White Sox will not only win, but they'll win convincingly. Only a tiny, not really. I've seen these numbers where when he was pitching in the eighth inning versus the ninth inning 10 appearances with the White Sox, Kimbrel has allowed six earned runs over nine and a third innings. I read that today in midway minute for a 579 earned run average. Only one of the appearances came in the ninth inning. And how much of that do you believe is just a picture going through some valley moments in a season or getting used to mean okay or getting used to a different role that they're asking him to play? No, I believe he's regret. I believe that's why it was so important for the Cubs to deal him and deal him at peak value. Again like we've seen him struggle We saw Hendrix have had vaccinated right? "There are other guys that you want to be part of your core moving forward or if you do have been a huge part of the past bryant rizzo havi willing to trade has signed through twenty twenty two as well so They're certainly like a lot of questions with that. And dealing away guys like again. Rizzo havi your bryant who are like faces of the franchise who helped break that. That world series drought. There's a lot of implications that come with that beyond just a prospect capital beyond what how it affects the roster and everything else it. It affects the fan base and You know just moving forward affects the future in the potential pass that jed heuer's front office has for this team. So so yeah this kind of garage sale is maybe the most likely option here too because it. It's it's gonna take a lot for the cubs to get back into the race. It's certainly possible. But also at the same time i don't know i don't know what you're necessarily getting for all of these guys to. I don't know that answer right now on july as i don't think knows that answer right. Now he's had cursory initial discussions with other teams sure but teams competing against each other in desperation at the deadline is what brings about like you said what the yankees got in return for a roll. This chapman for drew miller like you know the cubs giving up gleyber torres and then the following year giving up eli jimenez dylan sees for jose. Cantata there's a bit of desperation that leads there's competition there's the fact that you get up to the deadline and jed said this a bunch. What do you see happening here in terms of the sell off. Do you think it's this big kind of fire sale. Where a lot of these guys have almost half the roster are said to be a free agent at the end of the season so they could sell off a ton of different pieces and get a lot in return potentially in terms of prospect capital or they could have kind of a mini sell. Offer a half selloff where they they told that middle ground where craig kimbrel who figures to be the most coveted piece at the deadline. As of right now he could sell him off. I think you're alluding to the notion that if the cubs sayer three or four games out and still above five hundred is we get into july can team. That's in that position in that city with those expectations reasonably sell or are we looking at white flag to point out. Oakland has done this repeatedly in the past where they buy and sell where you have players that you decide you know what we can't win without that guy but we could flip that guy and they have so many potential free agents impending free agents that they have a lot of choices for example. You're not trading kris bryant if they're contending you know he's an mvp candidate bought given the depths in their bullpens. Maybe yeah you might trade. Craig kimbrel Here here's the thing. If you're contending reasonably going back for craig kimbrel i mean we you know. We look at the trade deadline two months out and always seemed to forget that the return on almost every player out. There is not all that great. And that's even in a market where you know. There's limited supply. I just don't know that. What the cubs are going to get back for craig. Kimbrel is worth giving him up with his good as he is. Been at this point. And you're right. The buying and selling tampa bay does it every single year. You saw it a couple of years ago when they when they went out and got nick anderson During his rookie season from miami when he was absolutely lights out for them down the stretch but they they always make the trades. Where if they feel like there's value their that their record is immaterial really. I don't know that the same standard is in place in chicago. It just feels like if the cubs are going to go for it than they should actually go forward but the problem buster. You know we lose this story that's on. Espn dot com now. Where are they realistically in the national league. They're not as good as la. They're not as good as san diego and you can make arguments and pretty compelling ones that they're not as good as san francisco new york atlanta and milwaukee. So are we talking about them as the seventh best team in the national league and if they do make the playoffs are they really the type of team that can put together a run to make holding onto these guys worthwhile. It's a great question And maybe the question you're asking especially since the cubs since they won the world series in two thousand sixteen winning the world series becomes the standard. And maybe the question needs to be. Do we feel like we legitimately have a chance to win the world series. Do you believe this team does that with that. Group of starting pitchers don't throw particularly hard and keep in mind too and you know this. One of the standards used around baseball for a mistakes made the trade deadline in recent years with the giants before madison. Bumgarner was a free edge where they were kind of hanging in there but nobody really thought that they were even close to what the dodgers were but they decided to hang on keep the band together and they immediately collapsed after the trade deadline after keeping bumgarner and they probably didn't get the type of value that They would otherwise and if the cubs internally fascinating to hear their conversation. Because i gotta believe you gave him truth serum they would say you know what. We're not really serious. Candidates read win win the world series. And they would if they don't trade the guys they have. Now they would squander so much collective value. It is a different looking offense because he has different players in there almost on a nightly basis, and it's it's causing some havoc for the opponent opposing pitcher. Even if they're not scoring a lot of runs. They're getting a look at the contact they they're making. That's creating some of these moments for them.
