"It's not just Delta, Southwest American United and Alaska all fly human organs and tissue. And because it's not a centralized system. Nobody keeps comprehensive records. But as I'm researching, I discover that Eunice has been quietly collecting numbers on transportation problems. I head to their headquarters in Richmond, Virginia Organ Center. This is Lauren on the outside. It's a sleek concrete and glass building inside the offices and hallways look down into the call center. It's like a fish bowl is the sliver primary or back up. This is where Kim Young called when she needed help finding someone to take that kidney and where the organ coordinator told her it had missed the flight. Eunice coordinate some 1800 organ and tissue transplants every year off those more than 1400 or kidneys. Roger Brown runs the place We are placing. Up to 24 to 30 plus organs in a 24 hour period. So we're quite busy. Roger is. 48 has worked here since college after his father got a heart transplant kind of motivated me a little more to look into this field and So I found this job in the classified section right after church organist was organ placement specialists like this is a job. I have tohave Eunice is all about logistics. But it only switched from using clipboards and paper trails to a computer system in 2016. And with that switch, Roger unintentionally created a system that can count how often transportation problems crop up each year, more than half the time it's the airline or airport. It could also be problems with couriers. Or with Theo Pios or hospitals on either end. I mean, I think your data shows like 6.5%. Of the shipments had a transportation problem. Yes, that data's correct. The majority of those problem areas are, um, delays. And that in the data is called a near miss. Yes, it is just a label. But, yeah, we chose to use near misses a label for A delay of two or more hours where the organ ended up. Still being transplanted at the original intended destination units also tracks what it calls failures. This means that the person waiting for that Oregon didn't get it. Someone else might have or it might not have been transplanted at all. Roger says his data doesn't show whether transportation problems are the on ly reason. It's important to know that a delay could be a primary reason that an organ was not transplanted. It could be a contributing factor. Or could have nothing to do with the reason that the organ is transplanted. Eunice handles only a portion of all the organs transported nationally, usually ones that are hard to place. Out of just over 8800 units, shipments of organs and tissue over roughly four years more than 7% had transportation problems. Rogers numbers also show nearly 170 organs never got transplanted. And almost 370 were delayed between two and 12 hours. One of those near misses is the kidney, Jenny and camera tracking late that Saturday night last October. It missed its connecting flight in Atlanta, and they've got to figure out how to get it to North Carolina. They now have nine more hours until the transplant surgeon says he won't use it. Jenny's at a campground. Kim is in her spare bedroom at home, waiting for Eunice to tell her how much a charter flight will cost and she called me back and said, You know, it's going to be $15,000 in it will only get there an hour. Before. If we drive it, I said, OK, then send it on the ground, and that's what we did. And then you just worry. Was that the right thing like I didn't sleep the rest of the night. Jenny and Cam worry about every organ they send off. But talking about transportation problems like missed flights is a sensitive topic in the transplant community. In one of my earliest conversations.

Tensions rise after North Korea blows up liaison office

"On Tuesday north. Korea blew up a joint liaison office on its own territory. Clear the border with south. Korea this comes as relations on the peninsula have deteriorated exacerbated by cross-border propaganda, floated into the country from the south. Young has cut all communication with soul, and threatened to move troops back into the boards own the South Korean. Unification Minister says he takes full responsibility for the worsening relations and has offered his resignation well. Joining me on the line from Seoul is Timothy. Martin. WHO's The Wall Street? Journal correspondent in the city. Tim, wondering about to two thousand eighteen. There was a period of intense negotiation between the two careers. So what went wrong? Well, yeah, that was the apex of this modern approach meant on the Korean Peninsula. South Korean President Moon jae-in met with conjunction three times that year everything seemed to be moving in the right direction, but many of us can recall what happened in Illinois. last February. US and North Korea did not reach a deal on nuclear talks, and basically it's been on a downward slope since then. North Korea had basically ignored South Korea offer much of the past eighteen months. Sort of placing Moon in south, Korea and the timeout corner but in recent weeks. Kill young has reemerged quite angry. Over variety of issues and now they've taken action. So why did young blow up the Liaison Office? It was empty, so it was clearly only a symbolic move, but doesn't mean at least in the eyes of the north at any hope of future collaboration is over. Metaphor call statement to make about their belief of what Korean relations are at the moment literally sending it back to Ground Zero I, think the. Target of this is twofold one the the spokesperson. If you will for this anti South Korean campaign and violence, we saw at the Liaison Office was headed by. Jones Sister Kim Young. Has Risen in prominence within the regime. This allows her image her brand to rise within the regime. In among the North Korean people I think it also sends a broader message to South Korea. about its displeasure with where. economic assistance sanctions relief any type of deal making with the US, the north likes to to lean on south. Korea to try and do. It's bidding and I think what we saw earlier in this week is expressing some of that frustration. So what are the latest military developments from the north? They're coming in almost by the hour we've seen North Korea cutoff official communication's the hotlines with South Korea of this. We have liaison office with Korea has moved some troops closer to the border, and into some civilian posts that had been vacated as part of this twenty eighteen run-up in diplomacy between Moonen kin us, so we're seeing some Increase, heated rhetoric. From state media on North, Korea saying increasingly medicine things day by day. So how has the South responded? What's the line from moon? Yesterday we saw pretty startling about-face from the mood administration. loon in the South Korean government had been. Out stomaching the northwest behavior and tried to play the role pacifier. but yesterday they finally had enough. The North had been antagonizing them. For weeks and months, and so yeah, we saw the presidential Blue House come out and call at some of the state media remarks, rude and Ignorant The military South Korean, military say. If if the Kim regime takes any type of military action, there will be a price to pay. this has been. This is quite a stark shift in the tone from South Korean side. And what about Washington chump has skin in the game, but also has his own problems now. Is that creating a window of opportunity for Pyongyang? I think right now. From widely seen that is priorities. Is Birds do not include North Korea I think if you take a much broader view, North Korea still has tested a nuclear weapon have not launched an ICBM into the skies. That's the red line for the trump administration, so to a certain extent, this status quo where Korea's not conducting type of long range weapons. Testing, There is some comfort with that from Washington's perspective, but again for both sides, trump and Kim. Third they might only have five months or so left to to deal. Make with each other so i. think what we're seeing in terms of inter-korean tensions. This could be part of a much broader play to try and move North Korea higher up the priority list in the White House.

"Slow change real small things over time, so the changed I've seen over a decade something. I would have wanted to see a year. You plant small seeds. And, then you keep coming back to them and after three or four years, people yeah, we should do that. That sounds great. And then have many years later. It circles back again, but I definitely say much slower locally and I've found more success in these girls because their internal politics within a local community, and it can be hard because the interpersonal relationships. The relationships are so much stronger. I'm thinking about it in that the change into the piece of change can happen very quickly in your own garden. So my own classroom with my own students in my like I can change really really rapidly in an order to do that. I need the regional support of people who are moving rapidly as well. People were moving quickly and change that I don't feel like I'm alone. And then the change that I want in my local community outside of my garden definitely happens, but it happens so slowly at it happens in a way that can peel frustrating so that if I did not have that regional network I think. I might stop my ripples of impact. Hacked might stop, and that I would see too many walls and changing my district. You're my larger school, not that people aren't open to change, but the time it takes to make change. There's a problem. It's an issue in teaching is there is not a model of teacher? Leaders is not a model that supports a teacher staying in the classroom and being a leader. So I have to enact change in curriculum in my own classroom, and then in my own educational team, and do all the over more than fulltime. Sohn's abilities at that requires. By then went a change. In a larger area of my district again. That's all on my own in volunteer time. And that takes a lot of things. Move because there's not models of teacher staying in the hospital and being a leader. It doesn't happen. It's not that people are open to change its that the system doesn't give time to supporting those teacher leaders That's all bonus as.

"So I teach in a public school, and I've got to systemic things going for me. I'm being able to make change in doing things differently to begin with first of all being a social studies, teacher were really lucky in that there's nothing that's not social studies. and not every teacher can say that, but I can math impacts history science impacts, history politics impacts history. There's not anything someone can bring to the table and tug about That's really not a part of my curriculum. Everything always involves human interactions in some way so it. It's relevant microphone so personal. I'm just a little fortunate. Being in the social studies realm. I felt so qualified to teach economics and psychology in theory. History Associated License issue everything. The second major systemic supports being able to make change is that we do not have a state mandated test for social studies in Massachusetts. It's been in development for fifteen years. It may happen soon. It may not happen. We really don't now, and we don't know what form the test will take whether it'll be content or skill driven. There's been a lot of talk of it being more skill driven, there's not a state assessment that we have to be moving towards in terms of specific content kids have to do we focus on skills and I would say when I. I first started teaching. It was a transition, so the course I took over the world history, all the teachers that had taught head, retired or left, and gone to a new school and four new teachers came in in essentially, they did not give us any of the old curriculum they said on was it was ninety percent. European medieval fair all all year long apprentices in nights in kings and castles, and that's not representative, so we just want you guys to start from scratch, but I would say that does not mean it's always been easy in. Everyone's always said yes, but at least I didn't have. To two major walls in the sense that might content itself lends itself to doing new things in social studies. A change, so no one's surprised that a world history teacher is trying to mix things up of course..

But it didn't happen that way. Young. It didn't give a faithful account the cooling towers sent the Bill to Washington. And within a year they had rebuilt what they needed to move back to reprocessing fuel. Again, anybody's anybody's going to have a hard time cutting a deal with the North Koreans as long as they have China as a backstop the second. China's says you're going to cut a deal with the Americans. It gets done or am I incorrect in that analysis? I think the well certainly the North Koreans. Listen, very closely to China and Kim Jong UN was careful each time before and after he met with President Trump to go see Xi Jinping, and and sorta take his council, but I think the North Koreans have their own reasons. Apart from China to not seek a deal. If the deal means they have to give up all of their nuclear weapons, which of course, is what we Americans would like to see their these are the weapons of last resort that they think are the kind of final thing that would deter any kind of intervention and their country, and whether or not the Chinese tell them to they're going to be pretty low to give up was it a mistake for Donald Trump to cancel the military exercises with South Korea before Kim Young gave us anything in return. Yeah. It was a mistake. And in fact, it was actually originally a Chinese proposal so called freeze for freeze where the North Koreans would freeze their nuclear and missile tests as they have and in return, the United States would freeze its military exercises on the peninsula. And the Trump administration said they would never accept that that this put a moral equivalency between what we do with our allies, and what the North Koreans are doing legitimately and so forth. And then of course, they agree to just that in Singapore. Last time around the president agree to it. And so I think there's merit now. And and and taking a totally new approach to the military exercises in and and I don't think it was the right move at the right time. So if you're advising Donald Trump, and clearly clearly, you're not you actually advised. John McCain for number of years, would you advise the president? Okay. Reinstitute those exercise immediately. I would I mean it if not immediately within relatively short order, depending on what kind of continued talks happened with the North Koreans, but the exercises are necessary for our own military and for the South Korean military to stay sharp to be able to be ready for any kind of military contingency. But it also is an abrasive this freeze for freeze thing, which I think the administration was smart in the first instance to say, they would not accept, and you know, I think the collapse of the talks last week shows that the North Koreans are not in fact on a path to give up all of their nuclear weapons, and we need to acknowledge that fact sometimes a dictator contained is better than a dictator removed. I'm thinking of Saddam Hussein really the name of the game is deterrence here, isn't it? Deterrence and containment the problem of North Korea and its nuclear weapons, I think is highly unlikely to be solved in the way that we would like, but it has to be managed because it is a dangerous situation. And to that end bolstering our deterrence, whether that's missile defense, the resumption of exercises on the Korean peninsula. Plus, the pressure economic pressure information campaigns and so forth that can help to contain. The problem deter any aggression on the part of the North Koreans and keep us together with our allies were you at either this personal question. I know you were involved with John McCain for a number of years, I during the campaign, and then after that as the one of the deputy staff directors on the Senate Armed Services committee. Did you attend either of the senators funerals the one Ariza? Zona or the one here or Indus DC tended, the one in DC and the memorial service in the capital was the took place and. How do you think he would react if he was sitting at sixteen hundred Pennsylvania Avenue to the North Koreans? Well, I think first of all he would have thought that it was misguided for the president to meet with Kim Jong UN and particularly given his own brutal record at home, and is dangerous way of dealing with the United States and others without knowing that there was going to be a deal to be had, you know, he would have said put the president on the plane if there's a deal he can ratify don't put the president on a plane to try to get the deal himself. That would be the first thing. And I think what he would have suggested going forward is to continue this campaign of maximum pressure against the North Koreans publicly say, yes, we want full denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. But to try to make smaller steps and getting a rollback of their programs while keeping up the pressure and the deterrence on multiple fronts, military, economic information and so forth. Mr. Fontaine, what's a bigger crisis? Flashpoint today North Korea, which I look at it just. Containment or the dust up between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. Well, India and Pakistan by far it seems like things are settling down. But of course, there are only settling down until the next terrorist attack in India. And when you have terrorist groups that are probably at best only partially directed by the the government of Pakistan and have some autonomy. And then carry out these attacks, particularly in a democracy where the right to defend themselves is pretty preeminent in India as it would be here. Then you're going to get the kinds of military exchanges. We've seen and when you see two nuclear armed countries standing off and convince essentially going after each other with conventional weapons it should make us. All pause and directed diplomacy in that direction..

"He's known as really the bare knuckle background player on John loons, seventy three years old. So he's almost twice as more than twice the age of thirty five year old dictator she is sort of hard nosed character in the background. And he's got this reputation after North Korea held its third nuclear bomb detonation test. Here's he was quoted as saying that he'd like to see South Korea and in a CEO fires. Of course, Kim Young is also the frontman here. He's the guy that came to Washington a month ago and got the meeting with Mike Pompeo secretary of state and was Trump at the White House in white after that meeting. This summit was set. So obviously, Tim young is carrying water and working as a close confidant of. King John in the question is as. He's some longer negotiations to follow afterwards. Or kim. Young troll play. He has a big hand in deciding whether these things move quickly or did they drag on and on and co aware, so he he's a key player in all we're speaking with guy Taylor at the Washington Times. He's the national security editor he is in Hanoi. Vietnam for the Trump Kim summit how much of this guy is about Mr Kim just trying to preserve his dynasty or power bad. He's he's really been the whole thing is under girding why Kim Jong in a green diplomacy right now, Kim Jong UN in repeated speeches over the last five years has promised to bring economic development to North Korea. He's trying to shift the focus of his regime away from Jess pursuing nuclear weapons and the cost. Ability of opening it to some kind of economic advancement that never really happened when his father and grandfather weren't power. So this idea that said possibly Kim Jong onboard abandoned his weapons almost seldom if you would have been in that way that the country would give them up in exchange for a big economic package. "I don't care what they were standing in cal- clapping for even though it is illustrating to us from our point of view that. Yeah, they're just clapping for themselves to the base who maybe doesn't think through these things quite as much to the base of the left a left Espace seeing their darling, clap and chanting USA inside a state of the union speech by Orangemen. Bad. What do you think that message sends to their base guys? That's that's what I was thinking. Continuing on here. Looking at last night's state of the union address. How about Todd watching a major political party in the US not applauding for banning the Barak practice of killing alive? Children which only five nations left on earth. Legalize this practice and North Korea is one of them. Pretty good rule of thumb is when it's down to you in North Korea for something you've probably wrong, I'm guessing while this is why I'm going to be fascinated. You said later on we can expect a discussion from you about stark in worldview differences, come up here. I pray to God. You saw something that that. I didn't. I hope I can I can trust. And because yes, let's save it. You're right. But your hope is there is hope that you're gonna get what you want. You're just not gonna get it from the people you want it from. Okay. But I'll explain that a little bit later on. Let's go to the next one that next. I had last night. No, no. I thought this was the low point of the speech. And I and it's mainly because I think Trump's first meeting with North Korea was the low point of his entire presidency. I thought it was a national embarrassment. I was in barest as an American is. I've been ever the last time. I was this embarrassed as an American is when Carter tried to rescue the hostages five. Okay. All right. And I got that embarrassment. Secondhand for members of my adult family at the time. I thought that was groveling beyond content. What went on with him and Kim Young own and for him to go there, again, my only hope is the sequel cannot possibly be as bad as the original. And Todd I know you want to chime in on this. If I wasn't so bored by the speech by this time. I was going to tweet back to you. Hey, where's your Jack Nicholson face now body? I just I can't even with anymore. Trump ball washing of Kim Young. I can't do it anymore. Aaron I promise you get to respond to this one LL Chuck Schumer standing to applaud American never becoming a socialist nation to see him stand at applaud that when Trump said that last night. Yeah. I mean, it's it's the conversation. We've had about Whoopi Goldberg trying to put Alexandrio Cossio Cortez in our place and kind of what you said a little bit earlier trying to stick it to the base. Hey, you're being a little bit to honest right now. So we're going to tell you grandpa checks grandpa, Chuck's in charge right now. And we're not we're we're good. We're going we're going down that road. But not quite yet. We just have to lie a little bit more before we get that. Now, a cynic might say the fact that we're proclaiming we're never going to be a socialist nation when we've pretty much adopted many of the premises of socialism and the Republicans cheering this are funding these premises as we speak and the education and indoctrination for more Cossio Cortez's going on out there. I I mean, yes, that's a great applause line. But you know, a tree by its fruit. Aaron I'll let you do this when to since Todd back to back laughing at louder Republican senators applauding the president vowing to end silly endless Middle Eastern war when they're out there. "And frankly, we should be for those values in lots of places, including places like Saudi Arabia where these guys are totally sold out our values, right, including in dealing with people like Putin. Trump is going to go, you know, give a bear hug to Kim Young UN next month man, who's much more brutal than even a Madera. Right. So I I think Democrats should also engages fight and not just kind of offer their publicans the rhetoric of freedom on Venezuela. When they've clearly shown that they don't believe those values for everybody. They just believe that those values are for places where they have some domestic. Trump's worried about caravans coming north boy, wait till there's a failed sleet oil sanctions are tricky cutting off in as well and oil like is going to cause a humanitarian disaster, right? And that's always a difficult thing with with sanctions policy when you hurting the people more than the leaders there's way to target the leaders more directly the last thing I'd say Tommy's Elliot Abrams is announces the envoy like Elliot Abrams. Really? This is a guy and apart from kind of being one of the architects of the Iraq war which worked out great and promote democracy, but well, planned invasion, followed by a well planned reconstruction. Exactly what we need here. But also, the guy was an architect of Iran, contra and a policy that supported contras and death squads in Central America. So like the worst of the worst. It's tricky history of American invention in Latin America is this guy. Right. And so this is the guy that we're we're bringing in it doesn't doesn't offer you a lot of hope that they've learned from the history here, and again, I should say like we should be very mindful that even if they somehow get Madore out, which is by no means a guarantee that's not the end of the story. "What was his interesting conclusion that was drawn by many at the end of the last summit, namely that. Although it was all smiles between the two men and Donald Trump said that he'd made great tremendous progress. It was Kim Jong UN who looked like he came out tops. And that situation really hasn't changed since has it. Well, it has certainly benefited from the summit despite the diplomatic stalemate. That's followed your North Korea has taken steps to mend ties with south Korea, North Korea. We seen Kim Young on travel to China on several occasions and the US sanctions pressure despite US efforts to maintain those measures is starting to decline. So North Korea has certainly benefited since the June summit, but fundamentally what North Korea is looking for is a different relationship with the United States and more positive relationship with Washington. So there is still some leverage that the United States can use to get North Korea to take steps on its nuclear program. But again that's going to come down and better management of the process and a willingness to engage in a step by step approach. What these things that the North Koreans have absolutely no track record in doing in? Good faith have the. Will the United States has negotiated with North Korea over its nuclear weapons program in the past both bilaterally in the nineties and multi-laterally in the the mid to thousands. And yes, you know, these agreements have ultimately collapsed, but it's not just North Korea that bears it share the blame for these agreements falling apart in the United States is also slow to follow through on its commitments on the agreement made in one thousand nine hundred four known as the agreed framework. So so the United States, you know, bears a share in the blame for why some of these deals have fallen apart in the past, but that it is an important consideration. And that's why you're really deciding on an agreeing to concrete verifiable steps that role that North Korea's program is essential to ensure that Pyongyang doesn't cheat on any measures agreed to going forward when you think about the idea of Pyongyang making a commitment. It's it is a very hopeful. No one would argue. But it's not something that they've ever shown willing to do in the post. And also there is the likes of China now who who the North Koreans do rely on..

"Donald Trump and Kim Jong UN ought to hold a second meeting next month. The announcement was made a couple of hours ago following a meeting between Mr. Trump and one of Kim's trusted aides what will be discussed at the summit is anyone's guess, his specially given what little was cheered. Since the first one, we'll Kelsey Davenport is director for non-proliferation policy at the Arms Control Association and joins me. Now, everyone welcome to the program. Kelsey, what's your reaction to the news of summit number two? Positive that Kim Young troll came to Washington and met with Pompeo and Trump, and hopefully this process will kick off intensive working level meetings ahead of the second summit because it's critical that the second meeting which will be held in at the end of February really the sizes substance over pageantry, you know, there's been very little progress since the June meeting and the door will not remain open for diplomacy indefinitely. So this next meeting is really critical and Trump and Kim need to outline and announced some concrete actions that address both denuclearization and peace building on the Korean peninsula. Well, you say that very little progress has been made between summit number one. And this one that's capping happening next month. The diplomatic relations the whole process had effectively stole hadn't it. It had and that's largely because the Trump administration mishandled the process after the June summit in the Trump administration has been insisting that North Korea take steps to fully denuclearize before the United States will put any concessions on the table in return, so essentially no sanctions relief and no diplomatic relationship. No end of war declaration until North Korea's nuclear weapons program is completely gone. And that's just unrealistic and not a process that North Korea's going to be willing to engage in for North Korea to take steps to significantly rolled back its nuclear weapons program, which it views as a security guarantee. The Trump administration has to put security considerations on the table alongside North Korea's actions. You mentioned security considerations. And it's not long since. The US administration dealing with its its alms policy described the North Koreans as an extraordinary an ongoing threat. Has nuclear weapons program a fenced considerably in two thousand seventeen North Korea tested, hydrogen bomb, and intercontinental ballistic missile capable of targeting the United States. So there really has been a rapid acceleration of the North Korean nuclear threat over the past several years, and that's why getting this diplomatic process right is so important. This is unique opportunity to reset the US North Korean relationship and actually get young to take steps to roll back its nuclear weapons program. But but north is only going to do that. If the US takes steps return..

And this is the world a nearly month long government shutdown a back and forth feud with Nancy Pelosi, not to mention a lawyer who might drop the dime on his old boss with all of that swirling in the background. President Trump found time today to meet with a spy master for North Korea. Kim Yong shoal is his name North Korean leader, Kim Jong UN's right hand man at the end of today's meeting. The White House said Trump will meet the North Korean leader himself again at the end of February is extent fish is a columnist at the Washington Post as far as we know the two sides will likely meet in Vietnam it hasn't been confirmed yet. But Vietnam seems like a safe also communist country that is economically opened up and is much more integrated with the world than the isolated North Korea. Is we also found out today Isaac that Kim Young shoal might have been carrying a letter from Kim Jong own to Donald Trump. I mean, we've heard a lot about these letters that the the two leaders have exchanged some comment from Trump that they've even fallen in love, it does seem all very unorthodox. When you remember that the US and North Korea are technically still at war, the letters. He said, it was the letters were the reason that he fell in love, and we do have at least one of those letters public. Trump tweeted it and Kim Jong an often refers to him as your excellency. And I think that buttering up certainly helps as also this really lovely image of Kim Young chose last meeting with Trump where Trump is grinning and carrying the letter from Kim Jong in which is much bigger than a breadbox much bigger than normal letter. It's sort of an elephant sized letter. It looks like one of those publishers clearinghouse, right ex-. Yeah. Pretty extraordinarily. Well, a couple of weeks ago Trump was at a cabinet meeting. And he said a lot of good things are happening with North Korea. And then he said, this is another administration came in and said of this administration, namely. Mike and myself and the group around this table, you'd be at war right now, you'd be having a nice big fat war in Asia. And it wouldn't be pleasant. And instead of that we're getting along fun.
