The case for Baylor at No. 1 over Gonzaga

"The only respectful way to begin. This episode is by recognizing that scott drew baylor bears formerly known. As bill henderson's baylor bears improved a seventeen on the season tuesday night with an eighty-three sixty nine victory at texas. They outscored the longhorns. By seven in the first half they outscored the longhorns. By seven in the second half as a result baylor otherwise known as terry eagles alma mater is now seventeen and fifteen. Double digit wins. The bears are number one at kim palm. Their number one in the net. they are awesome undeniably. Norlander your turn to talk about baylor. Are you going to spend the next few minutes showing proper respect for the first lady of baylor basketball or are you going to once again disrespect. Kelly drew got drew. Plus mackenzie payton brody. Not to mention homer and janet price and tara dana and her husband. Casey bryson anna isaiah caleb. In luke plus drew barrymore drew carey. Drew brees drew bledsoe. Dr drew drew. Gooden andrew mcintyre how are you gonna handle this moment. bryce doesn't care does care. He'd bryce doesn't care. I talk to about it. He doesn't care. How are you going to atone for the fact that you still have a number one. I mean. I think it's disrespectful at this point. Daily top twenty five and one. After what i saw last night. I got baylor number one. But you don't and you disrespect the entire through family. And every drew. She has to drew mcgarry as well. You're disrespecting them all you've got number two. I think you're the one who needs to explain himself. I actually can't explain myself. And i do get asked this every day. I saw strong joe last night trying to make the case that baylor should be number one and i let it be clear. I won't argue with anybody that says baylor should be number. One baylor at this moment has a better resume than gonzaga. Got six quarter on lindsay. Does eggs only have five. Baylor is got the best adjusted efficiency margin in the country and one of the best of all time at this point. If you wanna if you wanna put baylor number one it is fine with me. It's just. I think we've talked about this. Before i made a rule a longtime ago i will not drop number one team unless it loses the only time i made an exception i went and looked it. Up is two seasons ago. Kansas was number one in the top twenty five and one to open the season. Kentucky might have been to. Duke was in the top five somewhere and do zion williamson cameras and remember the other one started with our allies and it was. It was whatever it doesn't matter. It doesn't rj barrett and so they went out and they just throttled kentucky on opening night at bankers life. And i just. I was even conflicted. Then because keynes's is just one and it was one zero and number one and i was like i don't feel silly not to have that duke team. That just did that to kentucky ranked number one. So i made an exception to the rule. Then but i've been ranking college basketball teams for better or worse for like more than fifteen years now and i've only dropped a number one team without losing one time and that is the example.

Ohio State men's basketball team defeats Penn State 106-74

"Start about discussing Ohio state because the Buckeyes beat the absolute crap out of another quality opponent this weekend. Final Score Ohio state one. Oh six pin state seventy four. So that's a thirty. Two point win over a Penn State team that entered the game ranked twenty third at Kim. Palm the lines are now twenty six which means as of this moment Ohio state has three wins by at least twenty points over top fifty Kim pom teams and according to Hoop Visions Jordan sperber the rest of the country like the other three hundred and fifty two division one teams combined only have three wins by at least twenty points over top fifty Kim pom teams which means Ohio state has already done something three times that the entire rest of the country has only also done three times just incredible so Ohio state is now number five offensive offensive efficiency number two defensive efficiency number one it can palm number two it's Sagara number two in the CBS sports top twenty five and one norlander. Yeah I think you and I both knew it would be good because they returned some key pieces in Chris. Holtman is excellent. Did you think they'd be this good. They are killing people and now again again number. One Akin no not even close to not even close. Maybe that's a little too thick but Yeah Jordan Stat. I re tweeted. We did that on Saturday. That's that's a really really good one And in light of what the Buckeyes were able to do. Just wipe the floor with Penn State thoroughly and I you know that was a secondary TV game. But I did have it on. And then it was extremely impressive and Caleb Western has been the star of the team to this point in the season but you know as we mentioned on the On the Friday podcast they do have more than just him and digit carton is really coming. He's coming into his own I I like so much of what he's been able to do. So yeah I mean this is the best when I said that it was the best team in the big ten. And you said are you gonNA pretend like mark turgeon doesn't exist. You remember when that happened. I vaguely remember that. Yes and then remember how Maryland should've lost at home to Illinois and really had. We're not going to dedicate anytime on this podcast. That game because it was hideous Maryland had no business beating Illinois. Did you happen to catch any of that game. By the way they were down. Big Big big and I was stressed out because have a real impact on the twenty one but then a Anthony Cowan got going down. The stretch in Maryland escapes win is a win is a win win is a win and I am. I am driving the Cowan bus as you. Well know and on that note I was happy to see it but but Maryland Illinois will get their due in time to come but yeah that just reinforced my belief that right now Ohio state is clearly The best as team in the big ten and according to some metrics operating as the best team in college basketball right

"Hey, it's Dan canal surprise. I'm not here to bash the SEC. I wanna tell you about my podcast off the bench with kennel my co-host Raja Vilnai covers sports from the perspective of former pro athletes five times a week. We talk about what we are passionate about. And it's not always the Xs and os, actually, it rarely is we dive deeper into sports discussions while relating back to our own playing days. People tell me, I'm much different on the podcast. And I am on Twitter. Let's hope so 'cause I'm not very likable on Twitter. UB the judge does scribe to off the bench with Cannella bell anywhere podcast found. If we if we are going to say that Hampton came back and Dotson would have come back if both of those things would have happened. And I don't know if they're exclusive to one another then Kansas would have been in the thick of it for the national title conversation as much as almost any team short of that they are still, I think, fairly considered a final four hopeful here and enhancing, not coming along. Just means you miss out on that, but it's not the end of the world. Yeah. With RJ Hinton and devan dots and both on the roster. I had Kansas, I think fifth in the top twenty five and one you lose Hampton. I dropped him down to twelve and I can acknowledge maybe that too far, but it's not crazy. Not nearly as crazy as some canes fan seem to think I mean what I'm essentially saying is that a team that finished seventeenth? Kim palm last season. And isn't an lost its top two players from that team and three of the top six from that team. If you count you as a Buki. And is not enrolling a single top fifty prospect. I'm saying that teams actually going to be better. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Hey, you were seven finished seventeenth. Kim palm you lost your best two players. You're not enrolling a single top fifty player and you're going to be better. Now they're getting as Buki back. That's huge both figuratively and literally. And they get Silvio Susa eligible, which I think is impactful, he probably projects starter. So I think anywhere in the seven eight nine ten eleven twelve rain, just probably probably reasonable. And yes, if you are in that range, then your final four hopeful, I've long believed that anybody that's preseason. Top fifteen can reasonably hope to be a final four team. And I think Kansas, going to be fifteen in the preseason basically everywhere, have you had movement with any other team? More from April second until may thirtieth and Kansas. If you have them just missing it, but I feel I feel like you have shifted with K you more than maybe any other team. Probably yeah. Kansas moved more than anybody else because their roster has. You know changed..

"I mean, I think Kim palm is the the gospel college basketball, I think they ring now the the best defensive team based on the metrics of Kim palm ever. So that's they know that says a lot about what they're able to defensively. And then you know, Mark few set at half time. They asked him about how they were doing their up thirty seven thirty five at the time. And he said, you know, a lot of people are gonna talk about the defense. But I mean, they run good offense. I think that's the misconception about Texas Tech is that they're just a defensive team that can't really score. But they're gonna kinda wear you down with their defense. But they run good offense. They have covert Abella out. You know, when they don't have things kind of hash out. They've got it can go I so, but you know, Mooney and all these other guys had games. And I mean, yeah. Texas Tech was impressive. This. Speaking of oppressive, this crispier, just one more thing about him coaching. So this is Texas Tech is the big twelve school. Nobody wanted to coach right? Like, I think tubby Smith went nine and nine one year. It was seventh in the conference and he won big twelve coach of the year. Like, this is this is a phenomenal job by him in this team. Absolutely mean, I final four he said right after the game. I run four for Texas Tech. That sounds surreal. I think they were picked to finish seventh in the conference preseason going into this year. So he's completely overachieved than I mean, thirty one year for Texas Tech zones, pretty unreasonable in it's also crazy to think that the, you know, the most famous coach now, Texas when you talk about tubby, Bob Knight, even Pat night all the guys that have been there. I mean, Chris beard is number one phase of Texas Tech now as the one that did it. All right. So we'll talk more about Texas Tech in a minute. I'm sure they'll figure into these guys. Best bats the second game was just insane. Purdue and Virginia, and I will say Tate if there's one thing that Titus was dead wrong about at least for the last couple of weeks. It was Carson Edwards. Amiss is next coming Michael, Jordan. If you watch the way he played the last couple of weekends. I thought everyone was waiting for three for twenty four game. It just didn't happen. But the way this one ended it wasn't enough at first of all you want to defend Titus or jump on his neck a little more. Yeah. No defense for Titus. I think that's a little bit of an Indiana bias there. You know, believing that produce will finally hit the hunt that they always hit. But Carson ours is unbelievable. He had the the greatest tournament runs like Steph curry in two thousand eighty still won most outstanding player for region, even though they lost which saints up. And so he was I've never seen anything quite light. I mean because it wasn't Jim rages jacking on his own. It feels like one guy doing it. I mean, he was doing within the flow of the game. And he was making everything you looked at. I think he's going to average more jimmer was second or for that was second. In points per game. Minimum three Nancy the boy tournament. I think he's he's number one now in that category. Harry you had Kyle guy over everything over what sixteen points two and a half threes. You're cursing him at first then he hurts his ankle. And he comes out stronger than ever which seems to be a theme in the twelve. Right. Second have six ten rebounds for the game. Brian. I think the Andre hundred has to be strong. Do it really wasn't yesterday. But it did get four points in overtime, which propelled them. Just unbelievable swing just knowing that client if he makes that free throw their up four he misses, so it's still three. But if you got Purdue plus a half, ten seconds ago three point. Three. And if you get goes over time you lose over at the end by Edwards thrown out. I'm sick stuffing. Crazy, Memphis with the spread and everything. Purdue was a ninety seven percent nine for seven seven percent chance that they would cover with one eleven left up three getting four and a half of parlay kid..

"They've been they have one of the I think someone said there now number one and Kim palm of all time the diva the entire history of Kim palm has been tracking defense. I think this is the number one defense ever. That's a totally since like. Yeah. That's that's something. And. And on top of that. Like we keep saying most of the time when you hear that about defenses. There's always a letdown offensively in in at times that has been the case with Texas Tech when you can catch them on a random game in January or February. It's like my God this offense as a trophy that has not been the case for very long time. Which is why Gonzaga did not play poorly in this game, Gonzaga? I thought was the best team in the country for most of the season. Even come into the terminal like in Zagreb became the the odds on favourite to win. Right. Isn't that you do the game lean podcast and didn't like as Duke was struggling in these games skins aga- become the favorite to win. Yeah. Over time. I think they ended up in a they didn't lose this game because they choke. They didn't lose this game because they didn't play. Well, they didn't lose this game because someone got hurt and or anything like that. It was the maybe the best team in the country. They played like a b plus a minus game. And Texas Tech is just that damn good. And do the numbers going into this game Gonzaga number one in the country and scoring eighty eight points per game and every single analysts going into it is like, well, they have to keep them keep his game in the sixties. You know, what I mean the classic races sixty nine this is where we're going to be at. And it felt like Mark few set at halftime as they were going in who's getting interviewed. He said, you know, we talk about the defense with his team. I think we're running great offense. We're getting good shots. But you gotta say something about their offense. Because it's sort of the same thing you expect a team that has designed is sort of like a West Virginia field to it. Where a team that is designed around his defense is not going to have the horses on natty. Yes. Or to state at time, exactly. Like, it's going to be ugly on the other side. But instead Moonies a smooth guy. I mean, Culver is ready. A smooth guy Moretti, I mean, Moretti's family flew and he hasn't seen him in a year. And they show that pre-game they're like Moretti's families here. And in my mind, I'm like, oh, that's tough. Because sometimes you, you know, you know, how it is pillow hero ball res-. You're trying to show off and say, you know, welcome mom and dad. This is what I do in Texas. You You know? know, I don't have my well, my parents never actually came to any of my game. So I actually. I have no idea but continue anyway Moretti hits those big threes. I mean, he had the moments where you had the turnovers, but but whatever it was it was like big shop. I'm ready every single time that Gonzaga was like, okay, we got we got our feet underneath us a little bit here. We're fine. It's going back and forth. But we're at the end of the day. We're the better team Texas Tech made these big plays. And it wasn't a situation where it's Carson Edwards in covert being that guy or covers like I had to. I'm the one that has take the shot and run an offense misconception tech is that. And this this has been true as well. So like if you have this misconception. It's not necessarily your fault because you probably just call it the wrong Texas Tech games throughout the season. But the misconception is that. Okay. So their offense isn't horrendous. But it's still just jerk over Karen them. It's still going back to Cincinnati because I love shooting on how much hate Macron's system. Like Jerry over his Sean Kilpatrick on the Cincinnati teams were like, he's the one..

"So we should probably avoid all of that all of those the Trix altogether. I'm going to say Texas Tech as well. I mean, Kansas that we've talked about this previously Bill has kept staying at a place where they can still you'll reasonably win the big twelve at least a share of it despite the loss of dote despite the loss of Gerald Vic despite never getting Celia, but they they've shown literally nothing this year. That makes you think they can go beat a top ten top fifteen team on the road, Texas. Top tenant Kim palm right now. Kansas to in six in road games this season. The only winds are at Baylor and at TCU in overtime. And so if they are to win at Texas Tech this weekend, they will be doing something. They've never done this season. Which is go beat a top currently ranked team in a true road environment. I'm not ruling it out as a possibility but forced to pick. I'll take Texas Tech at home. And then. That game at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night between Keynes's and Kansas state will be massive last game. I want to touch on Sunday number ten Michigan state at number seven. Michigan tips at three forty five eastern in the afternoon on CBS. That's America's most watched network, America's most awarded network. It's the network of stars. We are recording this on Thursday night. Michigan was still playing while we started this podcast. And I now see that Michigan won that game at Minnesota sixty nine sixty it was a big game for Minnesota because they're very much on the bubble. They need quadrant. One wins. This was an opportunity. They didn't take advantage. So Michigan will be twenty four three win it host Michigan state on Sunday. And Michigan state's coming off a win over Rutgers. But they were in a real fight for a while. And obviously, they're missing key players..

"To after radio to like six thirty. And then rather than like love my children, and my wife, I've got a record a podcast. And then I gotta get up at five o'clock the next morning slide a Reno. And then I go Reno for Friday Saturday Sunday, then immediately back to New York. And then I'm back in New York for like eleven straight days. I'm not even going home in between. I'm not going home from New York for eleven straight days. How about this from two right now at this moment, I shouldn't say this. But from right now to this moment like I'm gonna be home one night through middle of February twenty third or something. It's like crazy. So it'll our pocket schedule will be a little unusual. But that one thing you need to know is that we will be recording on Thursday nights. So you can catch. The next episode on Thursday night or on your commute into work, or whatever it is. You do for living or just doing general on Friday morning last thing before we get out of here. There is no game on Wednesday night between two top twenty five teams. There is no game on Thursday night between two top twenty five game teams. So whatever happens that super interesting. We'll get into it on Thursday nights podcast. But the one game I did wanna point out because I think it deserves some attention because it's going to be a spectacular is that on Thursday night at seven o'clock eastern on ESPN. Plus if you have that you get Wofford at east, Tennessee State and Wofford's nineteen and four right now, east, Tennessee State nineteen and five Wofford is. Eleven oh in the southern Conference East, Tennessee State nine into in the southern conference. These are arguably the two best teams in the league, depending on what you may be think of ferment or UNC, Greensboro. But according to Kim palm, these are the two best teams in the league, both top sixty Wofford thirty. I it can palm. I know. I don't have to tell you. What's their net? Raking parish. "You know, I mentioned quality losses. You note that they only have non losses to Indiana. And that's at Indiana neutral court to Kansas because Saint John's has jumped in the top fifty Kim palm. Marcus resume is strong. They have one two three four five six seven eight nine top one hundred Kim palm wins and zero sub fifty losses. So the resume is still I think if you base it on quality wins and quality losses in. No, bad losses. Really there anywhere except for obviously a home loss to John's, but it's still a loss to top fifty Kim pump team the resume is really strong much better than their actual computer rankings in. We mentioned that the CBS is doing the top sixteen seeds on Saturday. I still think I have to sit down and really look at it. But I still think there's a chance Marquette could be, you know, one of the top four seeds in one of the region's this loss of Saint John's less than ideal, but not a resume killer in any way. You'd rather be twenty three the nineteen and four with a home loss to Saint John's, but still a big picture their resume is better than than than most teams in in the country. Keynes's lost at Kansas state on Tuesday night. Final score was seventy four sixty seven. So the jayhawks are five and five since losing Doke as Buki for the season. They've lost four of their past six games. They're now six and four in the big twelve two games back of Kansas state and Baylor in the loss column. According to Kim palm, Iowa State is now projected to win the big twelve outright and snap K you string of fourteen consecutive big twelve titles. Norlander? I know you have consistently said, and I have also consistently said we will not pick Kansas to not win the big twelve until we get to a place where you just can't continue to pick Kansas to win. At least a share of the big twelve. Have. We got there yet did this game against Kansas state in the octagon doom. Did it push you even a little bit in that direction? Nope. Go down with that ship. I have no new updates to provide. I am refusing to get listen once it happens, then I'll do it. But you're I'm still not convinced weird cosmic things happen with Kansas and Kansas fans between the Seuss's stuff in as bookie. This is like the law season, they'll accept that the streak ends, but it'll come with their own Asterix of their own designs. I think and as you've noted I think like in the past five straight podcast, and it's worth noting. I just do every podcast us. How important as is teams? Just so very different GP to me state EMA everyman a wildcat there the story here because remember maybe lead eight last season projected to be top twenty team coming into this season. Didn't have a dean way he's back in the lineup. And it's been it's been not a bizarro as situation. It's just been the opposite. I guess which also technically is bizarro anyway. Roll with me, they are seventeen and five. Overall, seventy two in the league at one point as we noted about five six episodes ago, ten four two and it just looked a little bit shakey there. But wait coming back. Now this top five team in defensive efficiency overall, cardiac Yara had that breakaway dunk a windmill in the final minute. Which was just the perfect punctuation for that home crowd. Getting the win over the hated jayhawks and staying top the big twelve huge night in Manhattan. This was the most antiquated game going into the evening and the way that Kansas state was able to rally defensively was extremely impressive. Kansas remains just brutal there one in six on the road such different team. It didn't look anything like the team that handled Texas Tech easily in Allen Fieldhouse just a couple of nights before that. So here we go case state Chillan temporarily barely got to play again, but alone atop the big twelve. Do you think kids can win at least share the big twelve if they can't win on the road? Like how many road winds do you need to get a share the big twelve title? It's totally. Valid question parish. And if the answer is like you need four, then they're not going to do it. They're not gonna win three more times on the road. I don't believe in debt probably won't be enough. Even if the hold serve at home..

"I am a slave to the resume mostly like, I don't really care. I'm aware of where you are in the net. I'm aware of where you are in Kim pomp. But if your resume says, you ought to be a certain thing, I am willing to disregard Kim palm for the most part and just say, hey, counting quality wins. Whether it's top twenty five wins, fifty top one hundred losses quality losses as well. Which is something. Think's important this is about where Marquette should be. So I thought markets should be in the top ten, but they've never been close to the top ten at Kim palm. They entered the Saint John's game at twenty six afterward. They dropped to twenty eight. So they're a team that has one of the bigger discrepancies between their people ranking coaches poll raking and actual Kim palm rating, and I guess that's a long winded way of saying they might not be as good as the number beside their name and the people right now that said they were sixteen in two they're still sixteen and two in their past eighteen games in that stretch. They've got a win over Kansas state team. That's leading the big twelve right now they've got a win over buffalo, which is not only a likely instability tournament team, but a possible at large team if they need to be that. They added a win over Butler. They got a win over Wisconsin. Like there's some got to win over Louisville. So there's some just one for junior tech on Monday night. So there are some great wins on that resume. But it is kind of weird. If I told you that Marquette would only have two losses since November twenty first against a schedule that included Louisville, Kansas state, Wisconsin buffalo, you wouldn't assume that both offices are to Saint John's, but that's what we're at. And it is it's one of those weird things. And I don't know if I'm predicting this is going to happen. But it'll be a I root for weird resume circumstances and going into selection Sunday because it just creates more interesting things to talk about and speculate about like what if Marquette only loses the rest of the way it gets swept by Villanova beats everyone else in the regular season. And then in the semi finals or the finals of the biggest tournament like it's only other loss as to either Villanova Saint John's it's going to be weird to evaluate the team if they're only non concert, Indiana, and Kansas, and then they have another five loss. Just to Saint John's and Villanova. I don't know obviously where they would be seated in that kind of situation. And I think we're gonna push off our seed prediction one more episode here one because it's frigging late in two CBS's doing the top sixty reveal on Saturday that might be a fun little teaser for stuff. So we'll we'll push that off for one more episode. Plus, I don't think Peres even remotely remember that was supposed to be happening on this episode didn't prepare for it. So we're going to push it back. But anyway, those are my thoughts market..

"It's number six Michigan state at number nine thousand Nyla number twenty one NC state at number twenty three Louisville. Let's take them in the order in which I listed of Michigan state's on a twelve game winning streak will they extend it to thirteen or do they get caught at island? I think they get caught at Iowa. I do think they do. And I've said previously on the pod that I was one of the toughest teams to read at least for me. Now, they've really started hit a stride here. Only loss came at Purdue wasn't close one right after we flipped to January that losses back on January third, but other than that they've been winning and they've been winning convincingly in many cases getting as expected sell performances out of Tyler Jordan Hannon's been good. I think I will get him in this spot. But I will say if they don't in Michigan state if Michigan state does win wins in fairly convincing fashion. I believe that they have been in the mix. I heard Bill say that he doesn't believe that Michigan state is being discussed as a national championship contender. I I don't know to me they have been, but maybe not to the to the point where they've been at the forefront of the discussion a win at Iowa. I think would get them to that point MSU. We've written about him on the site stuff last week about how great of an offense and passing team. It is rates as the number six overall defense just a defensive efficiency at Ken palm right now, which is impressive on both ends of the ball. Izzo recently told me that the way that he he's he's adopted different changes in how he coaches styles. And one of the things was like, you know, him have serious joking going Steve Kerr and being like, I wanna kinda do you guys do and some of that is that. But he also says listen, I'm a huge football fan. I always have been and to me like as I've gotten older and the more. I've looked at football team's success. Like over the long term, you really need to have balance on both sides of the ball. So I know that we've been good on offense. And I don't want to discount. How good we've been on defense. I take a lot of pride and how effective we've been in that regard. And for the most part they have been, but I will I will take to win this one and then doing so getting its its marquee win. I would argue even bigger than beating Iowa State, which is at this point by far the Hawkeyes assessed w how about this. I'm gonna take Isla with you. Do you have the energy to pull this off right now? I want to so bad. I want to give you my straight up. "It was a fun week in college basketball. Surprisingly, it looked like there was two games going into the weekend that people should care about Kansas villain. I, you know, maybe you disagree. I thought Kansas Villanova. I thought Gonzaga at North Carolina. The going to be the two good games than the crossroads classic provide some action rob fantasy hits a buzzer beater that was cool. Auburn gets taken to OT at UAB. What else happened like Siracusa loses dole dominion? There's there's some stuff going Baylor. Yeah. Baylor beats Arizona's games to us. That's something to talk about. And then as you go through just like the docket of all the games. I really mattered. It's still all points back to Kansas, North Carolina, Gonzaga. And of course, Villanova those four teams that we always want to talk about. I mean SMU Georgetown was a fun game. Just because you know, as as I've said before I'm a Mustangs fan. So I wanted to talk about that game. Bucknell gave Ohio. Estate, iran. So you. About the house. Matters. That is very true. That is very true. They did win buffalo number fourteen in the country. The nice nice win over the solution, southern Illinois that was something else to sit out to me. And then, you know, Furman again UNC w they just put ninety three points on UNC w great great for that military school, Denver, South Carolina, guys. You're over there now. Yeah, you're over by the military school of firm, you're in Carolina, should should we start taking firm in seriously? They are undefeated. But they haven't really obviously played much of his schedule. That's why they're only ranked twenty third. Maybe right now, maybe maybe they've jumped recent poll, but I don't know they they they'd be UNC Wilmington by forty three. That's not insignificant. Right. And they've beaten they beat not at all. I mean, you know, they, I don't know, man. It might be time to. Yeah. I saw Ken palm the story that came out on the athletic. And it was basically like, you know, something that you've talked about ad nauseam on this podcast before is that when you do make shots. Do look great. So you know, they made a lot of three pointers in that game. I think they made like seventeen threes against UNC w and you know, mounts Klay mounts guy that is interesting to talk about him. Bob, Richie said that he you know, he doesn't even know how good he can be yet. But he knows that it's been fun to watch him play. But interesting enough Kim palm re wrote that you know, three point shooting is random, I don't know if you've heard this. But once once Kim palm says it is a real thing. So it is a random stat the way that people defend threes as random and sometimes it's all about the luck of the ball going in and making shots. So today. So I was happy. I was happy that I read that and learned that and I'm happy that it's in the ether of the world. So congratulations to all those nerves out there that figured that out. It's a fifty fifty thing the ball goes enter it doesn't and the a coin flip every time. You're doing it up there. Let's get into. Let's get into segment because we we don't wanna step on her own toes. Talking about of these games when we we have to I dish out our guys in her bag as the week. Let's start as we always do with good guy. Who who is your good guy of the week? There are a lot of choice go there. So rejoice as I going back and forth. I think you actually we actually had a document prepared for this podcast because we're not in the studio together for the first time. And I wrote on there that Steve offer was gonna be my good guy the week. And the reason that it can't be my good guy is because I watched this halftime situation where they had this little thing where you know, you make the layup. Make the free throw make the three make the half court shot, and then you went car, and yeah, we had someone do this at the UCLA game game that they ended up losing..

"It's only losses against a material Texas team on neutral, and then an understandable. If not a blow out loss kind of what UNC Gonzaga Michigan did UNC in the big ten challenge. Back on November twenty eighth and Los eighty four sixty seven but overall, I think Carolina's looking mighty fine. And just okay right now, they are they're third. Overall, offense efficiency. Kobe white is a stud staff told me before the season. He was gonna be better than anyone thought. And that is totally true proving to be true. He is super fun to watch play, including that hair. I don't get how someone with that. Like, how you can just have that hair and be that awesome. And not think that it's just going to create problems on the floor for you. But he doesn't that just all in on Kobe white and that hairstyle him balling out. He's been terrific. And to me he's been the most valuable player on that team with Nasr little Luke maye Cam Johnson. Kenny Williams, seventh woods, even looked awesome. It's all about Kobe white. So ROY Williams is doing just fine for himself. So far right now with one big non conference game still looming this weekend. Yeah. It was just a few weeks ago ROY said his team stinks. And he sucks we didn't any of that. And he had the he was doing the worst coaching job of his career. And now they're coming off a win over Gonzaga the rink fourth that Kim palm. They've got a top three offense in terms of offense efficiency and just like usual. They are dominating on the offensive glass. They are. Their offense. Rebound percentages, thirty nine point eight, and they really did damage to on the offense of boards is North Carolina team that that looks like what we thought it was going to be in the preseason a legitimate final four contender. So Indiana one at the buzzer on Saturday. We're gonna talk about that momentarily. But first, here's this what's up. Everybody. Will Brits it here? I wanna let you pick six podcast. It's the world. "So hopefully, Hurley can figure it out because in the state in the state itself Yukon is about basketball, and you guys let Randy Edsall in the Yukon football program dictate. What happened you guys hate that? That's very tough very tough moving onto the other Hurley brother, Dr favorite hurler number thirty three Zona stay coming off of just a historic season. They were great last year. Just. As we all remember, they're were getting first place votes there for a hot second number last undefeated team in the nation. Lists undefeated teams nation, they they just were dominating everybody in Rhode that all the way to then say tournament had a hell of a run into tournament came up just short in the final four. I think there was lost little the phone force it, and it's gone. Oh, no. I got the my my notes are terrible. It says no says here they lost the first four game. That's right. Turns out they were in Dayton, Ohio. Forgot that their season ended in Dayton Ohio after being ranked third in the country in the last undefeated team. That's right. Arizona state Bob Hurley, but this is the fourth year, I think properly can change things. I want to say this era ONA stay they taught us a valuable lesson last year. It's going to happen. Again this year if a team does not play defense and shoots a ton of threes. And makes them early in the season. Just keep in your pants for a little while phones. That's my advice to everybody. It's going to happen this year Tate's there's going to be a team like that. It might be Marshall. They play fast they shoot a ton. It's not going to be Marsh is that they're going to feed it. So there's going to be a team that starts out really hot upsets teams because they're hitting they hit fourteen threes in a game. And and you know, we call it the trae young. Yes, this is going to happen. America's gonna go nuts you and arguing it on this podcast. And it'll be like, listen, I like what I'm seeing all these guys. But I don't like that Kim palm their defensive ranking is like one hundred forty second the country that seems problematic to me and the people will be like, why do you hate my team? And I'm going to say remember St. last year. That's why I'm going to say, I don't hit your team Kim palm does. It's blame it on Kimball. Yeah. Exactly. I'd take one hundred percent responsibility. But Kim pumps valuable Kim palm or Jay Bilas to where people like the only want to challenge the opinions or like oh shit. If you said that and I'm gonna back I'm going to back off pretty here's Jay Bilas. Because even though he's a real person Kim's on the thing is the machines. You can't trust the villas. They're like he's the perfect person. He's the perfect college basketball. Boy, Jay Bilas. Yeah. Like, even the people that don't like Bill issue when the people are like what a pompous asshole. They still like a Bill, but. Even no matter what he says. Like should if I disagree. I must be wrong. I better change my opinion on this. Anyway, I don't really have much else to say about it is in a state. I just wanted to make we're going to go down. Arizona state. We're going to watch games. And we're going to see what happens in tippy. I'm excited to see it. They listen three best players. Can you talk a lot of desecrating Hurley? Talk about a great coaching room at university. Herm Edwards and Bobby Hurley shitting me. That's That's a great a great team. tan like there isn't Arizona state fade out there who is truly believes that he has the to the best football basketball combination the country, they exit like, I'm sure there's one like you talk about a..

"I'll run it through run run through foyer Villanova was preseason number one. At Kim palm. They obviously finish number one. It can Tom Kentucky was preseason. Number to finish seventeenth. Arizona was preseason. Number three finish twenty eighth which state was preseason. Number four finish twenty. First Keynes's was preseason. Number five finished night. Duke was preseason. Number six finish third. West Virginia was preseason. Number seven finish twelve Florida was preseason number eight finish twenty-second for was preseason. Number nine finished second. Michigan state was preseason number ten finished sixth. Again, you're not gonna hit number on number. But in terms of a grouping tool, which is all I've ever used in palm four outside of the advanced pistons and all that stuff, but in terms of the rankings. I think it's a terrific grouping tool and the. Data from last season suggested in the preseason. It was it was a pretty good grouping tool based on. You know, where if you were supposed to be great last preseason, you were at the very least really good like every team that started in the top ten finished in the top thirty and five of the teams that started in the top ten finish in the top ten. This was also interesting to me. Guess how many schools started outside of the top one hundred and finished inside of the fifty. Doesn't sound like that's big. That's that big of a jump. Eighteen actually did it. I'd say two. What do you say to? Only two schools that started outside of the top one hundred finish in the top fifty. You know, take a guess they were Loyola. Loyola I don't think started. This might be one of those things where I've already screwed it up. I actually don't think loyalist started outside of the top one hundred no start at ninety third. Okay. I don't want to cheat here. Let me just think I'll I'll be fast with this. Who was a lot better? What was Aaron estate one of them? No because Arezzo state let me look up. I don't think I missed anybody. 'cause I was researching it pretty thoroughly Arizona state. Okay. This is one they were actually one hundred. So that's the reason I frame, I phrased it the way I did started outside of the top one hundred. They were one hundreds in the preseason. They finished forty ninth. And the only other one. That I think might apply last year. See I'm trying to remember what team ACC school first year. Coach. ACC school first year coach last oh, NC state. They went from one oh nine to forty six in the other one. They lost their McDonald's all American after he left school in the preseason and still finishing the fifty western Kentucky, but from one twenty to forty seven. Wow. The only two schools that started outside of the top one hundred Kim palm last season and finished in the top fifty NC state and western Kentucky. What that means is that there was only one school in the entire country that started outside of the top one hundred and receiving that large bid to the tournament. That was NC state. Keep. Yeah. So like if you're outside of the top one hundred now, and the reason I did all this research because I was going to talk about it last Monday on radio as it relates to Memphis. It's not impossible to be outside of the top one hundred. Kim palm and be so good that you earn an at large bid to the insulate tournament. But it is rare. It's not impossible. But it's rare. It's rare real quick. So if you are, you know, if you haven't looked yet my one two three fifty three is up. I wanna get to two teams that and I have pretty high, but we but we disagree on to wrap up the pot. But before we get to that western Kentucky. I have forty five this year. Just a quick tour. Here I've got uconn at sixty four I think that.

"Ooh i bet you this is a little bit under the radar and then you looked up and you saw it in other people's this might be the one you talking about got gonzaga in the final four for the second consecutive year i think this is the most wide open regional because though i do believe that chris mack is in that staff done a tremendous job to season getting xavier its first number one seed in history i also think that they're the most vulnerable oneseat when you start looking at some of the computer stuff xavier was outside of the top ten basically all year long even if they were inside of the top five of the people and yes the top twenty five and one most of the season for instance virginia's one in kim villanova's two in kim palm and kansas is nine and kim palm so the only one seat outside of the top ten is actually xavier so i think the most vulnerable least suggests that they're the most vulnerable one seat and the north carolina i think is is among the most vulnerable to seats i'm with you know just doesn't lose to inferior teams than they haven't lost to to a non top twenty five team all year long and so north carolina has gone has lost to wofford so this is the one that i think's wide open i've got gonzaga playing michigan in the elite eight and then i've got gonzaga advancing to its second straight final four with the victory over john b lines wolverines outside of that bracket looks about like everybody else's bracket to look or it looks like i mostly higher seeded teams advancing but i do have gonzaga michigan so that's three versus four elite eight game and gonzaga advancing out of that obviously a good possibility you are on the money i had kans aga into the final four and since then i think i've seen i don't know ten or twelve people that cover the sport nationally are talk about it on television actually right into.
