"So we got a couple of questions concerning the miami marlins who have outscored their opponents to this point in the season and have not had the success that one would expect got a question from mike who said on july fourth notice the marlins still have a plus twenty one run differential. What's the best run differential for a last place team. The marlins seemed to be really good based on notice and it's true they're run. Differential is no longer plus twenty one but it is still in positive territory. It's plus seventeen and you look at the teams that they have a better run differential than they have a better differential than the mets who are in first place in the at least the marlin tarin less place in the east. There's no justice. The reds have a positive differential but not as positive as the marlins the marlins have a better run differential than the yankees they have a better run differential than the phillies a nationals than cleveland. Who's over five hundred than the cubs than the angels who are over five hundred then the cardinals as well much better than the mariners who are forty eight forty three but have been outscored by fifty runs so things have not gone the marlins way. According to the base run standings at fan graphs. They have underperformed. They're expected record by nine. Wins nine wins. Yeah as the most that any team has either outperformed or underperformed. The red sox have over performed by eight wins according to the base run standings but marlins at negative nine and really i guess it comes down to the fact that they are nine in twenty one run games and that'll happen and sometimes it just doesn't mean that much you know you might think. Oh they have a bad bullpen. That's blowing close games or something. But they don't they don't have a bad bullpen. They just have had extraordinarily terrible timing. It seems like they're pitching has been unclench or has had bad timing or bad sequencing or whatever you wanna call it if you look at the pitching leaderboards fan graphs and sort by clutch which is on the wind probability tab only. The diamondbacks pitchers have been less clutch than the marlins which just means that much of the damage has been done against them at inopportune times. And you can look also at baseball reference. They have splits by leverage. And if you look at tops plus by high leverage so how much worse has the team been in high leverage situations than it has been overall. The marlins pitchers have a one. Twenty seven tops. Plus in this case higher is bad. So they've been twenty-seven percent worse in those situations and that is the worst baseball relative to their overall performance. So things have just not gone their way and pitching has been a strength for that team and they have this great young rotation even in the absence of six of sanchez who has a shoulder injury. And he's missing the entire season which is a big blow but even without him they have trip rogers and they have pablo perez and all these other great arms but it just has not worked out so you sort of have to feel for the team and for kim hanging her for seasons. Gm and you might wonder. Why did they pick up. Don mattingly's option recently. Why do they want to bring this guy back. And we've talked in the past about how mattingly has had sort of an unexpectedly long tenure with a rebuilding team. That is not made as much progress as you might have hoped and you just keep staying there. Well maybe one reason why they wanna keep him around is that the team has actually played better than its results in and fifty record would suggest so. That's tough anyway. Mike wants to know. How tough is it is speaking. What's the precedent for a team like this that his outscoring its opponents and yet losing so often so i submitted this question too frequent stat bust consultant ryan nelson. Who did his data wizardry and he found that there have been three teams ever to finish last in their division while maintaining a positive run differential so it has been done before the nineteen eighty four pirates finished last in the east. Six out of six with a seventy five and eighty seven record and they had a plus forty eight run differential the two thousand one rockies were last five five in the nfc west with a seventy three eighty nine record. They outscored their opponents by seventeen runs and the nineteen ninety one. Angels finished last seven of seven in the al west with an eighty one. Eighty one record so they were five hundred. They had a plus four run differential. So that's not actually that bad against the one thousand nine hundred. Al westwood stacked but no team has ever come in last place in their league with a positive run differential. The nineteen sixty six new york yankees came quite close when they finished. Last in the al with seventy and eighty nine record and a negative one run differential. They scored six hundred eleven runs allowed six hundred twelve. No other team has come in last in their league with run differential better than negative forty. Now on the opposite end ryan writes. There have been six teams to win their division with a negative run differential all in western divisions and. I'm more likely to remember these. Dmc remember the teams that outperform. I guess more so than the teams that were bad but had a good run differential. No one really cares if you had a good torrential if you had a losing record or finish last in your division but if you had a great record then people will point out that well. You didn't ask or your opponents. Maybe got lucky. So the nineteen ninety-seven giants won the al west with a ninety. Seventy two record negative nine run differential nineteen eighty-four royals won the aol with an eighty four and seventy eight record. Negative thirteen run differential. The two thousand seven diamondbacks. Who were very memorable for me. They won the nfl west with a ninety seventy two record and a negative twenty run differential. They are the only team ever to have the best record in the league with a negative front differential. The one thousand nine hundred seventy twins won the al west with an eighty five and seventy seven record again. A negative twenty differential. He two thousand five padres when the nfl west with an eighty two and eighty record and a negative forty two run differential and the nineteen ninety-four rangers in the straight year. That was a weird one in the al west as well. They had a fifty to sixty two record and a negative eighty four run differential losing record but the best record in the division but a terrible run differential so that was weird. The worst place a team has ever finished in all of mlb with a positive run. Differential is twenty first place which has happened twice the two thousand one rockies. Seventy three and eighty nine fifth in vienna west plus seventeen run differential and the two thousand six rockies seven six an eighty six fourth in the west.

"Miami Marlins general manager Kim Hang made history as the first woman and the first Asian American general manager. Major League Baseball. And shattered one of the few glass ceilings that exist in major league baseball for women. She stands on the shoulders of another woman named F A Manly who 85 years ago, triumphed as a baseball executive and became the first and only woman to envy inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. A new book called Baseball's Leading Lady. F. A Manly and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues. Author Andrea Williams tells the remarkable story of F A Manly, the owner and co manager of the Newark Eagles, a team she cultivated into a powerhouse. She also explores manly civil rights activism and the history of American baseball. Andrea Welcome to all of it. Hi. How are you? Good. So let's start with the fact that you are not only a baseball fan, you have worked professionally around the sport. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum know when you first heard about the life and learned about the career of F A manly What jumped out at you? What leapt out at you about her career. Yeah, I think the first thing was just that she had done. It was really just what she was able to accomplish in the thirties and forties. I started working active you them in the summer of 2004. I had just graduated with the sport management degree and By myself, working in a front office on myself, ultimately becoming a general manager of a major league baseball team. I wanted to work at a small market club and, you know, I had my own Moneyball aspirations. But at the time there was no one you know you mentioned in the intro Kim and what? Just becoming the first last year And so, you know, I would always say that. You know, I wanted to be the first but I really thought that Kim would beat me. Um And I don't know. I mean, I do know why it took so long One, but yes, see, Seen F um and what she accomplished back then was was really eye opening because a We didn't really know about it. You know, I just got my job at the museum and Up. Kendrick, who is the president now was giving me a cooler and, you know, I saw her picture in the corner and started asking questions and researching and reading and doing all the things and, Yeah, it was. It was remarkable because she had been owners, um, female owner his team before that they're you know, have been owners and Major League baseball and in the Negro leagues, but she Didn't just only team husband. She really handle the day to day did all the player contracts and negotiations or the equipment and manage the books and did all of the things that a general manager does. And she gave it back there. Open the book with a scene for the 1946 Negro World, Syriza and F Family's team. The North Eagles play and beat the Kansas City Monarchs. Why was this such a pivotal moment in her career and in baseball history? Yeah, it was. It was pivotal because of me. I'm sure I don't think she had. Why? No, she didn't have any. You know, she wasn't a little girl thinking of owning and operating a professional baseball team one day, but everything that she did. She did it to the degree. So if she's in based on now she wants to live. No, it matter that she, you know, Matter of fact celibate like she. She's been struggling. All this part 200 steam, You know, having having a professional team hard anyway, But doing it in black baseball was that much harder. You know, Budgets were tight, You know, they didn't. They didn't have their own stadium, very few black owners on their own stadium, so they were giving up. Hefty portion of gate receipts every single game to the white teams that they rented stadium space from so everything was always such a struggle. And so it was finally like, yes, this is this is what it was all for. It also missed it. Now, when you're the top team, right gate receipts go up because now people want to come see the best of the best to play in that team. Hurt. Here We really go goes on it. Larry Doby, who became the first black player in the American League following Jackie, who was first in the nationally he was on that team, one of efforts players Oh, yeah, It is a big deal. You know, Now that we see that, um Major League Baseball is element you know, has elevated the status of the peace Negro League players. You know that All of those guys were doing it on a professional level, and they were champions. My guess is Andrea Williams. They've her book is baseball's leading lady F A manly and the rise and fall of the Negro leaves. So in a little back background on efforts was born in Philadelphia, 18 97, and if you Google her her heritage has been debated for some time. Of and you write in your book that, according to US census records, her mother had at least some black heritage. And she and her mom and her half siblings lived his black Americans. She finds out later that her father Is white as the result of a relationship or affair, I guess how did she live in the world? And what impact did this have on the way she became involved in baseball and worked and lived in baseball. Yeah, As for definitely, um, you know, she took advantage of her fair complexion when she could when she needed to know she didn't interview later in life and talked about how you know if she was traveling alone, she would say in a white hotel or either the white only restaurant. Um, but I think that really that privilege is what enabled her to come back to Negro League baseball and say to it is boardroom in the In the conference is for the Negro National League. When she's surrounded by all of these black men and saying, OK, this is what we need to do..

I'm still trying to answer text messages and emails from friends and agents and players and said it's been crazy. The 51 year old says she's ready to hit the mound running. "We'll somali i. Can you talk about your own relationship with kim hang. How did you get to know her. I started reporting on the dodgers around two thousand eight or nine with espn. And i'd see her on the field and she always was just kind of calmly standing there and you know just seemed like whatever interaction she had with people were seemed to be efficient and short and so it kind of intrigued me. Who is this person. So we just got to talking like. Oh this is this is coming. She's says gm and all of a sudden she's telling me stuff like we've got this kid kenley jansen as a catcher. You really can't hit those we put them on a mound and the results are interesting. Clayton's working on a slider molly. You should really check it out. But the where she would say it was so matter of fact and so dislike whole-home that that's kind of what stood out to me about her and then we've kept in touch over the years. How would you describe her personality. What she like completely unflappable. I think the first thing that needs to be done is. I've got a really familiarize myself with all. The ins and outs of the players. Deadpans are totally cool under pressure. Like the person you gonna call if you were kidnapped and needed the ransom delivered by noon with no you know without tipping off the police or anything else you. She won't be there. Where are we who these players are. And you know. That's that's at this point. The nuts and bolts of the job. Well for those. Who don't know that much about kim. And can you tell us about her career path so she played softball diversity of chicago. She was an infielder. She was really good. I was really a a sports nut love to play and she then became an intern with the white sox and twenty one years old working in the white sox baseball ops as an intern and at the time the other white sox were very good club had a lot of good young players and it was really just about learning and soaking it. All in absorbing all that i could and by the time she was twenty nine she was brian. Cashman the yankees assistant general manager and that was in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight. They won titles ninety eight ninety nine and two thousand now. Let's be clear here. That had she been a man she would have gotten a gm job somewhere else. But that didn't happen. Molly you about saying and how. She operated differently than her peers in l. a. Can you tell us about that. I mean that that dodgers organization was by a bunch of guys who were so emotional so yell at each other so in their feelings she was just sort of just like standing there. Like i can't believe you guys and so it was just like toddlers running around at her feet. Two thousand five. The gm position becomes open and she interviewed for that job. What happens there. She was by all accounts. She was right there and franklin court the former owner of the dodgers wanted to hire her her pedigree spoke for itself. She had three world series rings. She had sixteen years in the business and the owner frank mccord. He wanted the credit of hiring the first female general manager. But what i was told later was that he was scared of the backlash of being the first guy to fire a female general manager. Because as we know it's a cutthroat industry n. gm's they don't their shelf life long even talented ones and so that was one of the reasons he was too scared of that. I guess the mcchord years got really ugly and about i say i wanna say two months before. The dodgers filed for bankruptcy. Because of a court drove the team into the ground. She got out of there and went to work with joe. Torry be again demonstrating how smart. She is molly. You know as well as anybody that kim has been talked about for basically twenty years now as the person who is going to be the first woman. Gm in baseball. Do you have a sense. For how many teams have considered her or interviewed for this position. Because yesterday when i wrote my story i published. I said as far as we know. The dodgers angels the padres the giants the mariners. They've all any reader and within like two minutes. My story going up. Somebody with orioles texted me. Oh we interviewed or to like it was just like everybody is interviewed her. Just sit there going through this anymore. They're just putting me through this so they can fill their quota or whatever i'm not gonna put myself section but she just did not give up and that's really the way a lot of my career has gone is just every step of the way it working as hard as i could give you my nose to the grindstone and just you know getting to the next level but i think this is so valuable to any of us who do have specific dream in mind about something. We'd like to do one day. And that's you know when you call close and you don't get that job that you desperate for just got a flick flush it and let it go and not let it break you to the point where you're not going to try again.
