"And your determination are excellent tools to grow your career. So i hope that this has been helpful for you. I know it is a debate that continues to array john. But i really would love to hear from you. Why not go to casting. Actress cast at gmail.com mail dot com. And let me know. What is your debate. What is your situation. Where are you in your career and perhaps on future episodes. I might be able to respond and give you some feedback about whether you should join the union or not. Please remember that. Each actor's journey is unique. Each set of circumstances are unique to you and so sometimes it makes really perfect sense for you to just jump right in and go for it but then there are other times when making that kind of a financial investment. You know you just wanna baby hold your horses just a little bit and see. Is this the right time now. There are other things about the union. That i haven't mentioned one is what's called taft. Hartley taft hartley for sega. After for example. Is that when you get a union job. Instead of joining the union you are given a ninety day period of time where you can take other screen actors guild after jobs. So you don't have to join right away. Taft hartley gives you a window before you become what's called a must join so that's something that you should know. It's also true. That many agents as i said earlier only work with union talent. But you know what that paradigm is also shifting quite a bit agents are discovering that these nonunion national tours which can be quite lucrative many times producers are scrambling to a non union tour just because it is much more economically viable for those producers to do those productions so having a pool of union talent makes sense for many of those agencies. Do your research check out those agencies that you might be interested in and then find out if they have a stable of non union talent that they work with by the way even though they might be franchised by the union. That doesn't mean they can't work with non union talent right dash. That's a lot of information. I know you might want to go back and listen to this episode again. I hope you do and listen. I'll see you next time. I'm jeffrey dries back. And this is casting. Actors caps salon. Casting actors cast if possible with support just by listening. "The next election. Well we've seen that. Women have swum against the coalition in the latest polling done by the sydney morning herald and the age forty one to thirty seven percent. I mean i think it shows that women a setup hop population is women. They've voting and they hit and one thing. I think the communists the needs to do is where has especially wears been over the last couple of days since all of these stories came out. We had greg hunt federal health minister saying well i haven't witnessed any fixes and i think women are just seeking its narratives coming from these men. I think you know the real change to happen Yes we need more women in politics. We need more women in leadership positions but we also need men to change the way they talk about this and maybe the ones that come out in and cooler stuff out Really interesting we'll still. Thanks so much chatting and look forward to saying more of your podcast episodes interviewing women in palmer house. That podcast is cold. Women of the house stellar. Thanks so much for chatting today. Thanks them again. That's still a door of it. She's a federal political reporter with ten news. I host of women of the house podcast. Also if you're renting kate listening before six will be chatting about renta's rights and how to make sure young people don't get screwed over a huge kink like making gone from being one of maybe two three young people to make close to now. I know it doesn't the paper can make clubs this next story. Is the fascinating something. I reckon you might have never heard about. The tens of thousands of years indigenous people. Living in the southeast of australia used to wear these skin cloaks made out of possum skin to keep warm and dry and to also tell stories. It was a tradition. That was lost a long time during colonization. But now it's coming back. Joe lhota medea young guy. He's learning how to do it. To keep the tradition alive. Cloaks to tell stories about our country ourselves as individuals Maybe to tell stories of different dreaming stories or different cultural stories So clicked depicted as an object that tell stories of any aspect of cultural heritage or yourself. Mitch mahoney is the twenty-three-year-old boomerang man and he's also an assistant curator at the mobile museum. Which is where we're chatting right now. We're standing in front of a display to possum skin. Cloaks and mitch is telling me about how important they wear for. First nations cleanse leaving in the southeast of australia in one aspect the survival mechanism the extremely warm. The possum for keeps you insulated. While also can be waterproof animal fat. Spain added to the back that there's something especially when you're in the mountainous region and the colder regions of southeastern australia that is really vital to survival and comfort and warmth but more importantly cloaks mechanism to tell alf doors. The clerks look like a lodge patrick blanket. That a made up of these rough rectangles of possum skins at a stitch together with kangaroo sinew on one side the clicks thick and luxurious with the soft possum for and on the other side the skins have intricate designs etched into them that are autobiographical. And they're different for every person in the community meet says people would have their cloak for their whole life. You have personal clerks which gifted to a baby when the bone maybe as free or six possum pelts and as an individual grove. The clock will be added to a veteran health. An extra image would be added to that club telling the story of that baby growing up and at mont initially have the totem of that particular individual might have the title of that clan for cooling nation mob for example which is the five clans that around melvin out is bundle the eagle and while the crows so that might be the first thing on the clock as they grow they might have handprints of family members the significant to them. They might have the first time. They went hunting. They might have designs of the areas. Where i've grown up over. Maybe the first period of their lot. And there's something where if they lost the longevity of a lifetime that you were born with but offer you'll buried with. Does that mean then. Many clicks remaining from pre colonization if people were buried with their clicks. So there's only two historical clocks left in australia One is gonna jamaa. Stars will quite the other two yoda. But because of colonization. These tradition was lost for a long time and twenty years ago. There were hardly any clerks. Remaining to some oddest roelant the practice started to bring it back the melbourne commonwealth games. Back in two thousand and six was the first time. The possum skin close will want the ceremonial practices in one hundred and fifty years sides. Tell the story of that. I'm such an important part of the culture in cape. That alive was part of keeping in touch with my cultural heritage and really it was something that i was involved with as a kid. My parents took me to do stuff with my auntie And it was just something that was in a way bestowed upon me to continue one way of I wouldn't i didn't have a choice but you know it was something that would just kind of how it happened and says it's been incredibly moving to say this tradition coming back. There's been a huge resurgent of kim clarke making are gone from being one of maybe two or three young people he might close to. Now i know doesn't the people who might cloak.

I don't hope that wasn't like a hassle to have to get through listening to all those great studios friends people that have helped me grow this podcast and might my deepest thanks to them. So let's just talk a little bit about how the podcast got started a little over two years ago and it really came out of a place of frustration. I have to say when i first started working with pat mccorkell ed mccorkell casting and i did that for gosh a good ten years and i really enjoyed it very much. I love doing it now. I was an actor for twenty years. Before i got started in casting in between those two times between acting and casting actually did a little bit of a stint as an executive director of a radio and television broadcasts training school and i had no administrative experience whatsoever doing that but it did teach me so much about what it was to be on the air and training potential broadcasters on how to get on the radio and how to get on television was really helpful for me because what i realize over time and this took a long time for me to get to was that all of the current or past experiences. I've had seemed to coalesce. Google word and really become useful in this new journey that i find myself on. Here's what i mean by that. First of all starting as an actor loving performance Really having a good run as an actor for twenty years then transitioning into being the administrator of a training school then going into casting. Each one of those areas seemed to really spark something in me to want to do or take this background. This experience that i had into something more and guess what the thing that topped off was teaching when i started teaching both at the broadcast training school but also in new york teaching actors about Seen study monologues. Just how two kinds of classes including voiceover work done. A bunch of voiceover work as well that really floated me. I don't know it was weird thing to say floated me. I didn't do that many drugs of the nineties. So i don't know if that's inappropriate But it just really gave me the sort of sense of. Oh my gosh. Podcasting makes complete and perfect sense to me right now. So you know what opening up my little tiny second bedroom creating a a studio and if you look way back at the archives you're going to see me sitting at this little kind of makeshift desk and then i had a monitor screen in the background with the logo. And i just thought you know what. I'm just going to try this. I'm just going to see what this is. all about. And lo and behold over a very brief period of time it became hundreds then thousands and now fifty thousand downloads of the podcast later. Now i'm not even counting the videos on youtube because i am simulcasting. The podcast on youtube. And i'm not even counting those. The youtube channel isn't doing as well. And i'm not sure why that is but listen. If you could get the word out tell your friends. It would mean a lot also if you could put a review On i tunes for example for the podcast said adding to the channel both on youtube or on podcast which is where. I'm being hosted. That would really help me a lot. I mean i'm incentivized as you can hear. I didn't drink that much caffeine today. But you can tell. I'm kind of juice about all of this. But here's the thing. As long as there are people that are interested. In what i have to say. I am gonna be shouting it from the rooftops for long as i possibly can and i have you to thank so. I'm doing my very best to practice. Gratitude today gratitude for those people who promoted the podcast but mostly gratitude for you for taking the time being a regular listener tuning in every week to find out what is next on the agenda to figure out how jeff is going to wiggle his way through and navigate. The waters of what. It is to being an actor. It's meant so very very much. I also to talk about some future episodes. I'm really excited. Because i've been hearing from many of you who've been sending in yourself tapes for evaluation. Now that's kind of weird in a way in my mind because partly because of the podcast. I'm just literally you can only hear the self tape. You can only hear the audition. But you know what as i describe and critique. Those auditions live on the air. That's what i'm doing. I'm doing it. Live i think it's really helpful. Because you can really hear my reaction to some of those moments that are taking place but also if you watch it on video if you go to the youtube channel you can actually see the self tape video. So i've got several lined up. And i'm excited that i'll be able to share that with you as well. I also a looking forward to sharing some more hands on concrete information. Not only about agents. I mean for example The blog that i have coming up at actor and voice studios. Are you ready for an agent. It's not whether an agent's ready for you but are you ready so really going through a checklist of things that you might find helpful invaluable for an agent. That's a podcast as well that looking forward to presenting to you also just giving you some tips for being successful whether it's in an audition whether it's in a new environment like for example if you're transitioning from stage into film and television than you know what i wanna give you those success tips. Those little tiny things to think about just to distract you in the best of all possible ways for you to feel more confident more comfortable and really more prepared for the booking when it happened so and looking forward to sharing that and the very next podcast after this one. Are you unique enough a question that we ask ourselves all of the time so you know what. I've never had to struggle for the right subject for the podcast. I've never had kind of a writer's block if you will on doing these podcasts. I just have all this information. Adjust kinds of it while you can tell right. It keeps gushing forth and so. I'm really really happy that you're still with us. And i hope you continue to so i'm going to take a moment to talk to you. A little bit about how exciting it is not only do i have gratitude for the podcast but you know what at mccorkell casting right now. I'm really excited to tell you. That theater is opening backup. Isn't that exciting. It really is that we're starting to see a season's coming into their own for many of our theaters that we've done. Work for for example a barrington stage company is starting to put together an entire season. And we're in the middle of casting. Several actors for barrington stage I'm happy to say that. The guthrie theater You know one of the world premiere theaters. in minneapolis minnesota has started up again and we are so happy to continue our association with the guthrie theater. So they're starting their seasons coming up they're gonna be casting in late summer and begin their season in early fall. So that's something also to look forward to also george street playhouse. It's within the proximity of new york city being in new brunswick new jersey davidson artistic director is putting together an amazing season that you might want to stay tuned for on the lookout for things coming up at george street playhouse. So that's what's happening on the theater side and on the film side. Oh my goodness. I can tell you. We're working on seven films right now. No kidding each of these projects film projects are in various stages of casting. But guys you know what we are up to our ass alligators. Try to facilitate getting these film projects off the ground getting cast getting the production's going on many of these projects and we are so grateful for that but it's also excited because that's a sign of greater things to come and i hope you can feel that way as well. Finally i just want to say i. I love teaching so much. And i know you've heard me say that many times before and i'm a little nervous you know i i love teaching part of it and it is something that is just in my bones. I'm also casting. And so i'm trying to balance it out between the podcast and the teaching opportunities that i get offered and doing the work as a casting partner mccorkell casting. It's been a little challenging finding the balance of that. So i hope that if you have some Some time and some energy and some interest in taking some classes. I would love to have a chance to meet you. I would love to have a chance to work with you. I just don't feel frankly that i'm able to. I can't say yes. To every offering that i get as far as classes are concerned. I have to be honest with you about that. But if you're interested in taking some classes that i encourage you to go to the website by the way the shoutouts that i gave her all places that i have found really just a great resource for many many actress. And i love teaching there. So i'm teaching an occasional class at all of these studios. I don't try to just kind of book. Myself willy nilly. I emotionally physically. I don't think i'm capable of doing it all the time but i do want to make sure that if you're interested in taking some classes with me i would love to have you. You just need to check out where be teaching some of those classes and updating the website so you can kind of find that out now. If we haven't worked together it would really be fun for you to consider taking a class so that we can get to know each other a little bit better. That would be fun for me. And i hope it would be fun for you. The bottom line is it's time that we think about getting back to work. What does that mean. what does that mean for you. Well it means making sure that you are ready. And what does that mean. Well that simply means taking a look at the tools that you need to have in place. Those tools include are your pictures and resumes up to date. I mean really. If you're using a picture from six months to a year ago it's time to take another look by the way. I haven't seen a huge difference between pictures that are meant for theatrical productions or pictures that are meant for film and television productions so for my vantage point. I don't see a lot of difference in those pictures. But what i do see. Is that the pictures. Have to really really look like you catch you in a spontaneous. Non posed way taken by a professional headshot photographer. That's the absolute most important thing. Now as far as resumes are concerned. I'm seeing a lot of really interesting creative resumes that are out there. Just make sure you know that your one page resume cut down to an eight by ten is is really a one page layout snap snapshot catalog of information about you so that i can read it easily and tell who you are just from that one page read. It's not easy but taking the time to make sure you've done it right. Makes absolute sense and then third of all clearly. Classes are the cornerstone of keeping. You energized keeping you focused and keeping you excited on having the career of your dreams and then of course finally. Here's my shameless. Plug is if you continue to listen to the podcast. If you haven't heard podcast. Even two years ago i encourage you to do it because the content on all of my podcast i try to make evergreen what i mean by that as i try to make the The information useful. No matter when it's happening so i don't go into know stuff that's going to be kind of just useful for present day this moment. I am talking about really information. That's going to be useful for you long term and so i would encourage you to go back into some past episodes if you haven't listened to them and what can i say. Thank you so very much for participating. I hope this is kind of a different kind of episode for me. Because i'm sort of just doing stream of consciousness. I hope you'll forgive me. If this has been like to nerve racking for you but i am genuinely pleased and generally genuinely thank you very much genuinely excited to continue casting actors cast jeffrey dry spot and i hope to see you next week on the next episode. Thank you so very much for fifty thousand download. The podcast and i will see you next casting. Actors cast is made possible with your support just by listening. Health talk continues Our next guest Jim Stephenson, CEO at campfires to Hamas County, Talking about what campfires to how much county is and you know, we grew up around campfire Girls and brownies and Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and the like Shannon. These are still some organizations that are going strong. I don't know about you, Tom. But I have vivid memories from going summer summer camp and just having a fantastic time. You know, A lot of camps did not happened last year, right because of Covid. And now we're opening up camps are happening this year and campfire. And going to summer camp. Jim is going to talk about that. And just how important is again? Everybody needs little help right now, don't we? Absolutely. And as we strive to return to normal, this would be a great opportunity for those involved in campfire. Let's listen to Jim and Shannon O Kelly GM Stephenson. Welcome to health talk. How are you? I'm doing great. How are you doing? I'm doing fantastic. It's good to see you. It's been a while since we had a chance to get together this covid and social distance scene. You have a very important job, and I admire what you do, by the way, particularly thank you world of our youth and the need for youth to connect again and come together and have opportunities to share and being a community which I think We all know the struggles that some of our young people are faced with this pandemic being ice at home, not be able to go to school. You run camp fire. You run the campfire Pro. I run the campfire organization in Snohomish County. Been in Snohomish County, doing what we're doing for 104 years. If you can believe the way not Jim can't campfire. I'm a little bit less just a few years less than that, Exactly, And and we're particularly we have a camp called Camp Dellacqua and Kim Clarke was associated with campfire. And we're celebrating our 80th birthday this year at Camp local. Okay, so every up out there you listeners out there that can just close your eyes for a moment And remember back when you were a kid, you are youth, and you've got a chance to go to summer camp. I mean, what an experience. I mean, I grew up in a large family in eastern Washington. And an opportunity to go to Boy Scout camp was glorious. I mean, you just learned so much. Tell us about 151 140 years of campfire. What Your role is what you do, and so much county as executive director kind of what your focus is, and then we'll get into the camp. Talk about campfire. So for campfire we serve about Nearly 9000 kids a year and we serve them after school. In school. We do outdoor education in her camp, and we do our summer camp, resident camp and day camp. And so we're serving these kids where they're needed. Where they need to to be served were, um Finding their spark. That's what camp fire is all about, Finding out what their passion is encouraging it, helping them as mentors to find their spark into learn about themselves, learn about their environment. Learn about getting along with other kids. So we try to be that support system for them. I love it. I love it. What are your challenges right now? Obviously, the pandemic and everything going on with the social distance and we talked about Let's talk about some of your challenges. Some I'm saving up the crescendo here is this camp? I love it so good. Yeah, If you can imagine I camp in particular is all about Interaction living in the same cabin, eating meals together, doing all these kind of things together, and we had to cut all that off a year ago. Like so many other people, and so we've got a whole year pretty much with doing zoom meetings and interactions online and things like that and we've gotten through. We've done the best we could, but it's not the same as that in person, learning that in person experience of camp Being with camp leaders, and we're so excited for that to start to come back now, Jim, I've known you for a while and I totally appreciate and I admire what you do. I can obviously see your passion and compassion here for kids and for these type of activities. Where does that come from? I mean, what's your dry? What's your motivation personally? That's a great question. I just was raised in Snohomish County. I had very, um, engaged parents that coached my basketball team encouraged me to do things. So I grew up in that really nice kind of environment and I just when my kids were born, I coached them and athletics. And got involved any way I could. I just think it's really important to have that adult to child relationship and to sort of encourage kids to to take the next step. To grow up into learn things. And and, uh, experience all the life has to offer and in campfire. I mean, you know, I mean to use a phrase that's often coin. It takes a village, right? It really takes a village to take the community and this camp. Our community that you're in charge of developing and putting together and enhancing for our youth ultimately leads to this camp. Dive name. The name name the camp can cloak more with Jim stuff isn't and Shannon O. Kelly after this time Outs on CO mo. Breaking up is hard to do. But when it comes to your wireless carrier, you should have left a while ago. You deserve.

"Purpose for your work and then four finally tell yourself that it's only a moment of time and then move on whatever. The role is whatever. The assignment is whatever the scene is. It's only a moment in time and then it's time to move on so reflecting on what you did is not that helpful to you rather than thinking about how. You're going to do better next time. How you're going to be how you're going to behave how you're going to act next time. So it simply a matter of moving on. Don't sit in that place of contemporary tiv- angst that's easy for you to say contemporary of anc. Somebody write that down. Because i think that's really cool so whether it's for an audition or whether it's preparing for a role or getting to work on set or stage listening to the critical voice in your head is not a sign of your smartness really isn't it speaks to your insecurity trust your training and technique embrace spontaneity and connect to the moments. "Wow thank you very much for that question. i see. i don't know who wrote that Oh maritza merits wrote that question. So here's how it works. Generally most of the time an actor who is acting doing acting work does their best to try and invite agents and managers to come and check out their work now. A lot of it's done online. I know but reaching out to an agent or manager after you've done the right kind of homework. What does that homework mean. That means that you have decided on the kind of agency that's going to be best for you. You see all agents. Don't cover all areas quite as well. They're not just kinda universal agent out there. Some agents are boutique agencies. They're very small. Maybe three or four people working in that agency. That might be a really good fit for you. Then there's those medium-size agencies. Their job is to get appointments for actors. They're experts added. And so that might be an agency that is well worth your while. Additionally some agencies are experts a little bit there are some agents that really love having actress of a certain age or some agents who love to represent dancers or singers or musical theater people and then there are some agencies that just really focus in on film and television work for their clients. So you need to do a little bit of research. You don't literally apply but what you do. Is you extend yourself when you have a reason to make contact to an agent. You extend that as an option you say. I'm taking this class with so. And so and i'm really learning a lot and i was wondering if you are looking for or seeking my kind of talent and that would you include your picture on your resume and a very brief kind of note or cover letter to them but generally speaking the way it happens is that you're in something and the agent or manager knows about that something you are in and they reach out and want to make an appointment to meet with you. It's very much a marriage and you have to date. I and so once you have an idea about what agencies might be good for you. Then it's a matter of making a concerted professional efforts to make occasional contact and pursue with your interest in seeking representation. Thank you maritza for that. I hope that that was helpful to you. That's it for today's episode of casting actors. Cast i hope you got something out of it. It was my pleasure to present this podcast to you. "Yeah there's a lot of that in this which it's it's too bad but you know i was. I was so excited. Over the fact that i was playing a robotech game in two thousand and two you know and it was just this series that i was absolutely in love with when i was a kid so i i was. I manage. look past it now but it didn't bother two thousand two but it did me in this twenty twenty one. Yeah exactly so. I was i still. I'm so glad we play like. I was excited to play this game because i was excited to go back and finally finish this because when i bought it in two thousand and two i never i by looking at the mission i actually got to chapter five so i got really far in this game somehow younger. Mike was able to to keep doing it. Even i wasn't and i was. I was impressed. A little surprised by. I recognize these mission. I remember all this and put it would take someone who tries. I feel like a normal way just because of everything in this game escort mission. Almost they really love their escrow patients. Pretty much and i forgot that there is that one is permission when you escort min mayor yet to protect them in may and i'm like anti just shooter and this like oh man that would have been nice. I hate may. I mean i i as a kid i really like mid. Maybe it was. I got older. And i'm at been through bad bad relationship man. This girl was really toxic. She's the It's funny 'cause. I you unlock the which one of the things that i loved back then is that you unlock the interviews with character. Actors that the because he used a bunch of the actors that were in the original show and they actually have. I forget her name. The lady that voice mid-may and she's like supremely aware that people hate that character. I never hated her until recently when it hit me like well. Yeah she because she leaves on rick throughout the show constantly. she's the reason he enlist in the military. He you know. He has lisa this interested in him. He's like why aren't going from inmate whose with her abusive cousin has beaten her. But hey man. I forgotten a lot about this. Do i watched a little like recapping about the show. And i'm like yeah. The show's brilliant. Brilliant love it. So liquid snake voiced the main character in the show to know he voiced the character named max sterling which was one of the main characters but wasn't the main character that makes more sense because kim clarke has a great voice actor. Don't get me wrong. But he should voice in the main character. His voice is so distinct. it's just kind kinda fell off putting for some reason you like. I actually wrote a note down about that. 'cause i absolutely one hundred percent agree and i think especially coming at it from the standpoint of a hardcore Robotech fan like max. Sterling is a pretty key character in robotech. And it's like cam clarke was a huge get at this time. Because of course metal gear solid was like this huge hit and so everyone knew was liquid snake and kids from the nineties. New ms as leonardo right like us. He's a big get for sure. But it's like you're playing a macro game that's taking or a romantic game is taking place in the robotech universe. So somewhere in these user universe max sterling exists in your character sense exactly like him because cam clarke can't help but sound the cam clarke. It's just like well then. why not. Just make max sterling the main character. Then if that's what you're going to do. Like i get the fan service..

kim clarke Mike max sterling max. Sterling leonardo one hundred percent two thousand cam clarke lisa two thousand and two one of the main characters nineties things clarke cam chapter five and twenty one
