Patrick Radden Keefe on Empire of Pain
"Patron kief joins us now. His new book is called empire of pain. the secret history of the sackler dynasty. Patrick thanks for being here. Thanks so much for having me back. So let's start with a very basic question. In case people are not aware of the sackler family and why he would be writing about them with title like empire of pain. who are the sackler. So this sort of to waste answer that question until a few years ago what. The sackler name Generally to to the extent that people were aware of this family it was a very wealthy family. One of the wealthiest families in the united states with a branch in the uk in london and they were known chiefly for philanthropy right art museum wings. Hundreds of millions of dollars to art museums and universities and medical research and would very often put their name on these bequests. If you you know in new york city go to the metropolitan museum of art and there's the sackler wing And that was what they were known for. What was more mysterious. Was the source of this wealth and it has People have become more widely aware. Recently that That the bulk of this wealth comes from a company purdue pharma which produces the powerful painkiller oxycontin in this era in which the naming of things and the un naming of things mounting and the on mounting has become very active. Is it still the circle ring. In the metropolitan museum is sackler still emblazoned on all of these buildings and donated wings. Well it's very much in flux. So as i speak today it's still the sackler wing but the has actually announced today initially. They said they weren't taking any future. Donations from the soccer is because of the connection between the family and the crisis and then more recently. They've said that they are You know i think assessing is is the word whether or not the sackler wing will remain the sackler wing. Some institutions have started to take the name down so tufts university took down the sackler name from a series of buildings Because the students there this is at the medical school had said. I don't wanna go to class in a building named after this family and and get my medical education. They're more recently. New york university has done the same. The louvre in paris is taken down the sackler name. So there's a real question for many of these other institutions and there's dozens and dozens of them were the name still stands whether or not they'll keep it
Star Trek: Discovery's newest character teases trouble and new tech
"With me is David Ginola plays Cleveland. Booker. Serves as our guide into new feature that the crew discovering his found themselves in welcome David Grievance thing me. So you're the newest addition to the cast Tell me a little bit about book. Yes. Cleveland Booker were introduced to this new character the last episode opening season. was really cool about the injection. This episode is you see Cleveland Brooklyn in a high stakes chase. He's on a very pestle mission which will understand throughout the season what he does Cleveland Book as a character. This gonNA bring levity. Fund had a different. Spontaneous, dynamic. So the franchise which we may not have the full and I know you can't get into details but how how does it get involved with the cruiser discovery because he's not are the federation is definitely outside. Book Schick may land on a new planet which will be revealed soon and they form relationships they former relationship, which will allow Cleveland become integrated within the federation astill. I'm KIEF that sense of self identity within the federation he doesn't lose himself within the federation. Now even bookish compliment. You GotTa talk a little bit about that. 'cause obviously, you're you're coming from a different perspective, you're not being catapulted into the future nine hundred years in the future like the rest of the crew year you've lived this life in this era chocolate about how that works that dynamic works that different perspective versus the core discovery crew. Yes. So. How for Cleveland, Boca this is a wealthy he's integrated in and he understands. Thoroughly. and. does even towns of technology like his ship is very advanced. So later on in the season will see how freedom book is AIDS. Offer for services especially, not just because it is understanding of the new wealth but because of the shit he has he's able to collaborate with federation and do missions that they ordinarily wouldn't be able to. Access to the. Some unsavory Bob. So the world. That is an intriguing tease obviously seen at the tech side. So I WANNA talk about attack in the Tekken. Star track particularly like what you talk about tease. Would some of this unsavory technology capabilities that that your character has access to so I'm an episode one really recall scene where we go to the Macintosh, which is like the underground market SEALERS, unsavory characters, but nonetheless, there's a lot of. Technology equipment cargo shipments that go through the different avenues his market. Technology Wise. Pretty incredible this episode but there is one specific gun. The headlights speak about I called this gun tele- tele- means small but mighty cerise Mu gun like that is the one that. CLEVELAND. Book actually uses in the trailer. Sa- gun that you. pull out and then you push it in shoots. that. Gun To technology being thousands of the future is mighty impressive. The episode and that sequence of being in the CONSOL. Really does bring the audiences understanding the new worlds from a perspective of the technology. How advanced it is and I'm really excited to see that
India blocks TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps citing national security concerns
"India is banning dozens of Chinese APPS, including Tiktok some say it's retaliation. The move comes after twenty. Indian soldiers died in a clash with Chinese soldiers at a contentious border in the Himalayan mountains, but a senior Indian official told The Wall Street Journal that the APPS may have been used to harm the country's Defence Sector Wall Street Journal reporter Sean Lee has more. It's a huge deal. Because India is a very large market for tech companies in general and also specifically for Chinese tech companies for many of them, for example by Dan's, which is the owner of the very popular short video APP. Talk India is the biggest market for talk after. A lot of Chinese. Tech companies have found a lot of success in India. A lot of them invest in Indian startups, and they've accelerated that in the last few years, speaking of national security concerns and China the National Security Council and a number of other us. Agencies are lobbying European allies to oppose new tech, a Chinese company that makes security screening equipment a reporter Cato. KIEF has more the first. First concern is on national security grounds, because obviously this type of equipment can have access to a lot of both personal and business data, and so the US is concerned that with Chinese state-backed entity potentially having access to all that data that they could feed that back to the Chinese government, and that could create a national security concern, and the second issue is more on a commercial basis new tech. Tech has been winning tons of contracts because their prices are super low. The US says that's because they're heavy subsidies from the Chinese government, and along the way there, then driving a bunch of US competitors to the brink, because they're unable to to compete on price, you know it's a commercial concern that really you know new tackle be the only company left providing this equipment

Is Amazon Profitable?
"Is Amazon profitable and the really short answer is yes it is actually it's quite profiled profitable stuffing two thousand fifteen going forward. Amazon is being consistently a profitable throughout history. If you've been following damn business model one of the critique that the company head head over the years is that it was striving always at very high valuation nickel bed to each earnings but the problem is if you're looking at Thomason just from the earning owning standpoint. Probably this was the wrong perspective. Because of course the company has been using a strategy combined operational and financial strategy that we can catch machine and really this is about the generating operating cash flows for for for the business even though running at very low net margins so so it means that you're running with very low net profits now betty few highlights from from from singer so yes. Amazon is definitely Prov flu profitable as being so consistently starting from two thousand fifteen and if you look at the numbers from two thousand Eighteen Amazon actually passed for the first time at ten million in profits which is a lot whoever when we look at the Amundsen we need to understand the Amazon business model. It's very diversified. Rennell company an and you know when when we talk about the debt company that comes in with talking about the bunny which has many business models we dean so we know we are not just simply if fighting saying Amazon is an ECOMMERCE is way more than the Tomlinson is an e commerce is a lot from business model it has within Amazon days another platform which is called. Aws this which as we would see as being the main contributor or the province because eight rance with different economics compared to traditional Amazon business model and then he does other you you know Cam prime and you know the other cities like Protesting services offered the bathroom which are tied together in a way Batuta also running. They'll Saran separately because again. Amazon is a huge company so if we look at the the profits from the province simbone it's very important that we don't get just too much focus on buffy salon. I mean it's very important that we look at the bottom line. Any business model is to be able to be viable back at the same time we want to look at another viable which is Betty Betty Betty important for any business. It's cash it's actually not not even catch the the bank is actually the cash that you can generate for the abbreviation means. Do you have available cash at the end in the short term that you can reuse it to grow the business and you can reuse in the short term to make sure that you have contraction for the business and Amazon is being a going. It's cash consistently and actually a successfully throughout the years so it has always been able to to actually ensure as at a certain amount of short-term cash through tweets ovation stance also to the fulfillment centers the original deficiency through through the fact that in any case Amazon gets money from customers right away and then he pays you know the the the senators in in let's say thirty or sixty days so they kief chiefs said that the gifts that the company advancement advancement in in dental financial resources which Dan the company has to get back to those sailors but yet it had this timeframe keeps Amazon the ability to to invest the money and then make mining them pay back to you know those those practices I mean we we cannot get the the Amazon uses each celebrity du Du actually sort of expand the timing takes to pay back to its supplier something that's that's a legitimate concern weekdays at Amazon each company that takes advantage over other that source of concern. I mean it's it's I used platform mm-hmm and I think when when you're in business fitting Boston to highlight that you need to options for your business even when you are actually building up as more companies more more business unique understand the logic of this platforms because a when you're a drone within those platforms than chances are is that you donate options and then you need to follow what Thomasson thus which is not the best scenario. If you have a business you following the lead Obama Zone and you don't have options you are in bed sedation. You better understand how you create you don't distribution platform to enable an an answer your own distribution of products and then of course use other platforms like Amazon as noxious and not a as a primary option in my thinking in terms of business but having said that if we look at the reasons for two thousand seventeen eighteen the the major contributor has been Amazon. Aws that I covered a pre-match from any perspective on for week embiid come. I'm GONNA leave awesome references at some links on these notes and really Dave look recent celebrating income out for two thousand eighteen free since did did contributed to over seven billion overeating king in operating income considering over two billion overeating reading income in two thousand eighteen so it's a it's a UJA teach contribution but as I said since two thousand fifteen going forward Amazon has been consistently a profitable when for the first time the company posted in two thousand fifteen number six million Improv is actually there was really. I think two thousand thousand nine two thousand ten when the company posted this province but you know I'm seeing these this was the year that they were posted consistently growing growing very fast. We defend different economics thanks to Amazon. Aws because many say that Amazon has been running always with negative province in reality he look at years from two thousand three two thousand eleven actually the company was running with Posey Ovitz and then you know there were a couple of deep in two thousand twelve and then doesn't fourteen and then again posting a

Uber loses more than $1bn in first quarterly report since IPO
"And Yuba has reported a quarterly loss of over one billion dollars. That's among the largest of any public company on more than its rival lift lost in all of twenty eighteen but the ride hailing firm, laid out a Paul, the bringing costs down the company, CFO says they'll cut back on customer promotions and will reign in marketing expectations. So to discuss all this. We've got Bloomberg intelligence analyst, Matthew blocks with us in the studio. Matt, great to see you again. How will the results then competitive expectations, they were pretty much in line. I mean the company had provided a range on the kief entre metrics when they published the perspectives. Most of those metrics came in at the veteran that range and that was laws. You wear analysts had kind of estimated that come, so, you know, no big surprises really all natural numbers. Did you say much to reassure investors about the outlook and this is what people are looking for incrementally? The they made some encouraging comments nothing specific. They didn't give any specific financial guidance US companies tend to give a range for the next cool tool. Revenues, I didn't do anything like that. But they did say through q one to q two they'd seen an easing of the competition that's been putting a squeeze on profitability. That's kind of giving them something about the kind of the potential to kind of still easing losses and make some kind of money on their by sharing business going forward. So I'm wondering what explains the share price reaction was at to with outlook was at the fourteen percent increase in revenue even though we're still talking about an awesome making company. I think is that outlook that I mean, if you think about it, they make a direct margin of minus four and a half percent on that right sharing business, which you'd think that if you're going to be in a business, you need to be making some margin on that the reason they haven't been this because they being incentivizing drivers been incentivizing customers as grow this business to the encouraging signs, as you mentioned that going to kind of ease the promotion activity that doing the competition seems to be doing the same kind of sales marketing promotional pressure on the business for the next couple of looking at lowering marketing expenses. Expectations as I said, you bring that up. But also the other thing is the question of how it's going to grow into Asian because one number analysts have their eyes on the growth of gross bookings, and that slowing so going to grow to the valuation, as a business gets bigger. You expect that, that growth naturally, but sales growth in gross bookings is really a key metric for this business until that she's thought to make some real profits. It's a combination of raising the number of rights kind of use of the service, which is partly through how much they use the ridesharing. But also how much of these things that you very these new businesses like freight got things like mopeds and scooters. They took about twelve trillion dollar market opportunity, and they need to convince people can really growing about one percent point one percent of the moment says about how they can grow into that. He they see and just very briefly analyst commented in a note. Another key question is, how as they cut losses if that even happens that would impact long term, demand, Yuba services could open a door for analyst to spend time digging into more fine grain metrics, a great. I think I do. Competition. Is that the position of markets, but people lift are expanding as well. You've on the east side at delivery, just those kind of businesses. So I think we're kind of looking at a few years of intense competition, the spaces people Bill platform. So it's going to be fluctuating. But convince people that they can kind of

VW chief's Nazi gaffe angers investors
"Independent. Investors have raised questions about the future. Volkswagen's chief executive Herbert dece after he evaded Nazi phrase in a management meeting last week. John many brand discusses the controversy with Patrick gave. Patrick what exactly did Mr. d say the private meeting to w clock badgers, and he was explaining that the twelve brands within Volkswagen that includes Porsche Audi Skoda's yacht. They're managed differently. And he was saying that Porsche because it has seventeen percent margins doesn't really have taught managing breathing down their neck about how to get things done. And he was basically saying if you are a different brand, and you want to have that same kind of freedom prophets will set you free. And so he said Yvette maxed fry which is really similar to our by MAC fry which was in blazoned at the Auschwitz concentration camps. So VW has unfortunate links with the Third Reich because we know is it possible that the head of a company that was founded at the behest of Adolf Hitler and relied on concentration camp labor during its early days could be unaware of the offense his remarks might have caused. I do think it's possible. The question is whether that. That means anything maybe that falls towards negligence or being Bolivia's. But you know, you're supposed to be super aware of these comments and of the history. And actually he's made a point of saying that he's aware of the history he visited outfits last year, he visited yet but shown in Jerusalem last year who was actually one of his first access CEO. So he is conscious of this. And this is just a major blunder. But I have spoken people who are in the room and more than half of them have told me they didn't make the connection either in part because what he was saying was really such a sort of benign comment that, you know, prophets will sort of help you. Nobody was thinking in terms of historical connections to folks against darkest days. Then again, a hassle going to people who say as soon as he said, I recognize the historical blunder, and it's worth knowing that Mr. de said the comments to an even five times, according to some people. So I think he was rather oblivious to it. I don't think he was putting on it. But it's hard to say, and I get inside his mind. So how did misdeeds explain it? Itself. Mr. has a pretty active linked in page where he puts up sell fees with join Adela from Microsoft, and that sort of thing that's actually working chose to write his apology. He basically said I apologize unreservedly Inouye was I trying to make this connection, and it's worth knowing that that came immediately. There was no hesitation on his part or anything and welcomed by multiple parties. And what's been the reaction of shareholders and investors? So when we talk about investors with Volkswagen it's worth knowing we're almost exclusively talking about minority shareholders because three groups hold ninety percent of the shares of the ten percent that's held by you know, you and I'm on pop investors institutions I've spoken to several who were outraged and defended and some of them as we've written in the have called for him to go. They think that this represents a really big misjudgment and calls into question some of his other decision making. But he's also made a lot of enemies within Volkswagen by trying to lift margin by. By going after the cost structure wanting to lay people off wanting to shift Volkswagen into a new direction focused on electric occasion, which will reduce the workforce over the next ten years. And I think there's a lot of people who weren't necessarily offended by the statement. But they see this as an opportunity to either hurt dece or to get rid of him because they're already against him when did Mr. deeds joined VW, and how'd you think his performance is rated currently by shareholders? He was a BMW board member for a while he joined Volkswagen in July two thousand fifteen now that just three months before the diesel scandal was exposed it's pretty unfortunate timing because it's not late enough to be fully cleaned from the diesel scandal. So he's actually been under investigation since two thousand sixteen by German prosecutors because there's a big big shareholder case that still hasn't gone to court or just in the early stages of going to court now where shareholders are seeking damages of nine billion euros because they believe. Board told them too late about the diesel scandal. They needed to be informed earlier. So DC's was the head of the VW brand not the head of the W group at the time. But he's implicated in that ended remains to be seen whether that be troublesome for him later on. He was only promoted to the Volkswagen group kief executive eleven months ago. So do you think he'll survive this latest scandal and give them the company's ownership structures? You explain it who would have the power to remove him basically to forces that could have the power. So one is the portion peac family that owns fifty three percent of the entire company so far from awful sources, I know that they still back him entirely, and he has such a big job to do right now. They've been very pleased with him. I would be pretty surprised that they turned on him over this comment. The other however is a little more contentious so Volkswagen supervisory board who really has all the power has twenty seats. Ten of them Gherman law, go to the labor union and then two of them come from lower south. Axes state where they have their headquarters. So that gives a majority right twelve out of twenty two basically the workers because Lower Saxony size of the workers because of the way politics works. So if they really turn against him than that's how you could see Mr. being ousted. So finally, Patrick VW has a history of unforced errors, and given this latest blundered, you think Mr. DC's really the man to turn around Volkswagen's fortunes. I can tell this blunder. It would be a really simple answer. And you would say yes shareholders have generally been big cheerleaders of Mr. dece in large part because he's known to be a very tough negotiator with the unions. He wants to cut costs here there and everywhere and Volkswagen under his leadership is making a full throttle turn towards electrification on a level that you're just not seeing with the groups that rival them in terms of car sold. So that would be renault-nissan Toyota General Motors, so electric vacation really is the future of automotive. Volkswagen has. Lake over everyone else. Nobody else is really willing to take that sort of risk. But the other question, of course, is corporate governance and cultural reform, and with this kind of comment, I suppose that gets put into question, but there are a lot of people who think that this whole episode was sort of silly. It was obviously an unfortunate error, and it doesn't have wider implications to really depends where you fall into that question. And I think one interesting parallel is that when the Volkswagen scandal was exposed Martin vinter corn the CEO step down within a week and the head of Porsche. But he has Mueller took over within a few months. He went to the Detroit auto show and was asked about this scandal by NPR, and he said, very clearly we didn't lie, and I would think that was actually a bigger gaffe than actually what just said because it was just months after the diesel scandal. It was a really sensitive time. And it was already clear at that point that Volkswagen had engaged in a cover up for a year after more than ten years of cheating. So to say. We didn't lie was just such a big thing. So I do think dis has a strong credibility with investors. Even with this gaffe, and in general, he does have the credibility to take this company in new direction. He's really got the portion peac families on board. And you know, they're often seen as the problem for Volkswagen being to your credit ads not looking after shareholders. So so long as these surprise next week. I think he'll be there for quite a bit more time at least a year or
Hogan casts doubt on GOP primary challenges by Kasich, Weld
"It should consider a primary challenge to the president at kief spoke with the governor at the Maryland state house this morning at his in Washington. Ed, good morning. Good morning. John. Sixty two year old governor HOGAN has won supporters on both sides of the aisle for his straight talking style in recent months. He's renewed his concerns about President Trump this week, for example, Maryland became the only state led by a Republican governor to sue the Trump administration over the national -mergency over border security. I think the president made some real mistakes here, and I don't think of the Clarendon using the declaration of emergency powers the right thing to do. And I think it should be challenged. So your view, it's not a national emergency. Well, it's certainly not we've exaggerated what's going on at the border. But we do have some issues down there. And here's my dad standing up to a president of his own party is something that governor learned from his father, former congressman Lawrence HOGAN, Republicans were mad as heck at them for decades, really some of them and never, you know, the the White House was pretty furious. But in retrospect, people say man, what courage who in nineteen seventy four became the first Republican congressman Richard Nixon's impeachment. No, man, not even the president of the United States is above the law. I probably learn more about integrity and one day from watching my dad during that crisis than most people learn in a lifetime now HOGAN believes many in today's Republican party have forgotten. His father's lesson. I do believe that there are people in congress and other leaders in the Republican party who who have not stood up when they disagree or when they think that the president is doing something wrong. I've not been afraid to do that. Well, let me ask you this since you're such a straight shooter is the president fit to be president. Look, I'm not in any position to judge. The the the fitness of the president. You know, I've been pretty clear I I don't like the tone that the president uses. I think there are times where he acts irrationally and makes decisions that are not only not an and does things in a way that aren't great for the Republican party or for the country or for him and his agenda for that matter. I mean, I think sometimes he can be zone. Worst enemy. So are you thinking about running for president twenty twenty? I was just sworn in a month ago for my second term. I'm I've got a lot of work to do here in Maryland, which say I'm being approached from a lot of different people. And I guess the best way to put it is. I haven't. Thrown them out of my office in two thousand sixteen HOGAN was one of the most high profile Republican officeholders to withhold support for then candidate trumps nomination and little has changed. Would you support him for reelection? I I don't see how my position with change much from before.

Let's go to Athens against been fica. Where to even start with this one Benfica opened the scoring with Seferovic of all people goal in the sixth minute. Another early goal doubled their lead in the fifteenth minute through Grimaldo pretty good, but Reuben has gets a nice high kick gets red-carded right before halftime. Not ideal. And then Athens comes back Colin Narita's in the fifty third and sixty third minutes. Levelling it up and then fica finding themselves on on the defensive spree. But it was office amid, oh, in the seventy four th minute who ended up winning it for Benfica. This is one of those games where it's like three to what a stunner what a game and I'm watching it just like, what is this like? This is the Champions League, get it together guys. This game was it was like a great terrible game. It was absolutely almost like unwatchable. But thoroughly exciting. I mean, there was no defense in this. It was all open headers and we're bizarre. Long range gra- like daisy cutter, golden picnics. Sense. Clone rita's had a great chance in the seventy second minute to get a hat-trick input. I Athens up three to you had to do was square it and let one of his teammates tap it in. But he goes for the hat. Trick to goalie, saves it in a mmediately Somme to- turns around scores on the other end as the buff part was the announcers are talking about, oh, man, KOTA rita's really going to regret something. Are taking that shot as Mehta scoring with just like with this like dumpy ugly shot that somehow gets a cross. The pitch in the goalie kind of just like forgets that he's there and what is happening, but but it was still exciting. I mean, you can't have three two game and not have some excitement, but I, I have his game. I'm like, Athens, have no business in the Champions League. They are terrible. Like just terrible there. I mean, you expect there. One thing that they're going to do is play stout defence a Greek trage tradit tros use me tradition all the way since the Spartan days fighting the Persians, but no their defense horrendous. Just laughably bad, but then our friend Ruben Diaz you know why just don't kick up near someone's face. It's just don't even put yourself in that position like, oh, what a week? Red card. It's like, well, it's still a red card. Just don't be just don't do that. Just it's, it's just right before halftime. It was just such an unnecessary red card. Something we will talk about more in a moment, but then somehow Ben fica. Just switch off and let just this team frankly has no business being here back into the game completely. Yeah, to free headers. I mean, it was embarrassing, totally embarrassed. I mean, just shocking. The amazing and I, as you say, I cannot watch the replays of clone Arrhenius taking going for the hat trick instead of passing without just cringing or balling up in anger. I mean, his teammate is so wide open. It's he's absurdly open. The goalie is completely out of position. I mean, he's committed himself to one end and one end only and it's blocking corner reviews and clarity's doesn't even look anywhere else. We've got a second calf pal. CAF pow came from Steve kief. He says, do you have any recommendations of first of all? Thank you, Steve for the calf bowel. Steve shoutout is do you have any recommendations for a mid priced home? Theater sound setup for my eighty three year old who's a little hard of hearing. He's fine buying the receiver and speakers separately. So my like knee-jerk reaction to that, and then I thought through a little bit thought, we'll kill them. That's the wrong answer was forget the surround sound system, the receiver and the speakers just get your ankle. A really, really nice set of wireless around sound headphones that he can wear that are comfy and give him good surrounds, awnings crank it or you know, adjusted. So that gets better dialogue in the headphones and doesn't even have to worry about the the receiver in the speakers. But if eighty three year old uncle isn't watching TV by himself, if he's got wife family around and he needs to have is for everybody, then that's obviously a bad answer. So, yeah, all which we did that answer. We didn't put in the in the shoutout. He did send a little bit longer Email and he says that sound bars were not working for him. So you know what I suggested Brayden was that he just goes in gets a receiver whether it be Dennen Yamaha, JVC not JVC pioneer in the five.
