But every year, the social media inbox just fills with all these different fat diets and different diets and Low fat diets and soup diets and peanut butter diet. I don't know. Put butter in your coffee diets, all kinds of things. And so I wanted. If we're going to do this, if we're gonna try and eat right and and getting better shape, I wanted to get an expert on so that we can all at least do it right And joining us now on the McCallum show is Dr Joe Cotten. Maybe thank you, but sorry. That doesn't work in 2021. Yeah, that sounds like my nine months of covert home alone. A lot of people. But, yeah, you mentioned it. I mean, we haven't heard enough people say protect yourself when Kobe by keeping your weight optimal exercising, taking your vitamins, even preventable, So that's a message that we all need to hear you already seven and I support that. Yep. So, you know, eat less droop, more water exercise more. These seem to be common common ideas, But you get you get a lot of different variations of this thing. I have. For some reason. I tend to be a fan of the intermittent fasting idea of, uh, you know, waiting longer to let my The justice system work a little longer. I don't know. You know the Kino die. What do you think is you look at some of these fad diets are different diets. Yeah, well, when you reached out to me, it's awesome timing. You have this. They have a good sense of this because about five days ago the government are U S. D A comes out every five years. Not very often. The recommendations for America, and they published that five days ago and yesterday, the U. S News and World Report published their annual list of those diets that are most supported with health and benefits. There's really commonality between both the government and the I think it's 24 experts. That's it With U S news. World important tried be someone objective and you know, and it is not the fad diets. You know, the Kido has been going on for five plus years. Thank you, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry and others. There's a lot of ways to get thin chemotherapy and covert or two. But don't do those two kiddo works also, but then and healthy aren't always the same. Although having a body weight that's relatively close to ideal is important, but you won't do it in a healthy man it what is the U S D a say, and it's so boring. Everybody start crying fruits that's was whole grains. Don't lean protein, give up lard and butter and use healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil. And what did US News and world report say it's all a Mediterranean diet. We always we live in Italy or Spain or Portugal. There's something around the Mediterranean Sea, but it's whether you know they've read it. The Mediterranean diet. I mean, that's less red meat. That's more salmon. Or proves more vegetables, more garbanzo beans. Homos, Um and I was a little red wine and no extra virgin olive oil, not butter, And there's two variations on the Mediterranean diet. If you're worried about your brain, everybody should read. Called the M I nd Mind diet, which is a really scientific diet to support a healthy brain. It's the Mediterranean diet with a little more blueberry and a little more green leafy vegetables like spinach salad, and there's one called the Dash diet. I mean, how many people struggle with blood pressure? Lot of it related to poor sleep or wait. Lack of fitness, But the dash diet the S H is the Mediterranean diet. Eat like an Italian, but lower yourself So honestly. Controversies of very tiny. I mean, the government is pounded by lobbyists that say you gotta put eat more meat, eat more dairy in Mar eggs, and honestly, they did a pretty good job. They actually resist that and say, you know, eat like your mama Told you She was a girl. Italian Mama, you know, have some pasta with lot of broccoli. I mean, we're not talking a lot of cheese and a lot of Sausage and tops but don't have whole grains Have lentils fall in love with kidney beans Fall in love with chickpeas on you know if you're eating meat and fish and very just keep the amount down. You know they're they're like add ons to the core. So it's a good week to talk about healthy lifestyle. 2021 Covert pretends could protection optimal weight and I'm a heart doctor. Don't drop of a heart attack is my Greatest goal in life. And you and I have talked about that, and diet is one of the most important parts of it all. So are you a proponent of like, just one day just okay. I'm not eating anything bad anymore or or is it easier for someone to ease into healthy eating? No, I think you just hit on something. You know, It's funny, I I talk to patients and you need to walk more. You need to use your bicycle in the basement, Not the enclosed but the right people are accepting. That don't mean we need to work on your sleep. People are really accepting of that because they want to sleep. You try and Jack with somebody's diet. You know you're dealing with their grandmother and your mother and ah, whole lot of other things Growing up, you know, clean your plate club or your father was standing over you unless you did it. So I go slow with people and I would love people to do meatless Monday. I mean, you know, tell your significant other looking on Monday. We're going to figure out how to do old meal, how to do a salad and how to do a being chili and meatless Monday. You want to do it wrong? The other six days of the week? Okay, At least we got A good start, You know, inch by inch. It's a cinch. I'm not One for drastic changes because it doesn't last long. People get disappointed. I don't know what to do with all this stuff in their pantry, the refrigerator the freezer. You know, on Monday, that's a good movement. You know, there are people that in January or doing something called began you ery. They're doing completely vegetarian vegan January, But unless you're really got the mindset, you know about a half a million people signed up for that around the world. But the time about 330 million Americans, I'd be really happy. The U. S. D a says we should now be talking about kids under two eating more plant based, healthy diet, so they really focused on starting these habits early in life. But if you do it too dramatic, if you Push people too hard. It's not gonna work so slow and steady changes are great. Try a home. It's sandwich. How many people listening right now I've ever taken to pieces of whole grain bread, lettuce, tomato homos. Maybe a whole grain mustard delicious, And it doesn't have the century defendants in turkey or cheese or ham. Try it on a Monday. Nobody's gonna get hurt on a Monday. Highest heart attack day of the week is Monday. It's a really good idea to eat. Little better on the Monday like the Mediterranean diet pattern. So when the one of my rules is, if I'm going to eat healthy, I have to have healthy food close by. I need to surround myself with healthy options. And what I actually go toe go to the store. I'll go to your website and you actually have a shopping list. Basically of things you should be buying. What are some of the things you should have in your house? Uh all times. Yeah, The hardest one is. It's like a once or twice a week. Restocking produce in need, You know, a bag of mixed Leafy vegetables for a salad. You need some red pepper, Jell O peppers, green peppers, carrots, celery, all dependent on your preference. I had a lettuce. You know, those things aren't gonna last. So you have to do that. I would love you to spend a little more money in the produce department once or twice a week. You know, crows and sign If you're worried about, it's gonna spoil our costs. Get bag. I buy bags of frozen fruits and vegetables, usually.
