"I'm joined by jay gordon. We're talking about the falcons. Defense our grades for them going into the twenty twenty one season. Obviously take all of this with grain of salt folks. We're talking about you know guys before. The games are even played But these are sort of initial impressions of the players the quality of the players. What we've seen from them. We've talked about the defensive line that linebackers. Let's talk about the back end of this defense. Because in the past especially in recent years this has been a unit that has been at times problematic. A lot of that has been due to injuries. We've we've seen guys like kiana. Neil ricardo allen demonte casey all go down with season ending injuries over the past several years so some of that is not just simply the nature of the nfl but some of it has been talented issues. I am of the mind that some of that is hopefully knock on wood in the past I want to start with the safeties. Because i wanna finish up with what we've got corner. They brought in to veterans to anchor the safety position for now. They're both on one. Year deals eric harris doron harmon and behind them are what i think are two really promising players. I think next year. Probably going to be our starters at safety second round. Pick richie grant and fourth round. Pick from last year. Jalen hawkins who. I think you could argue that one of the best pre-seasons of any defender on this roster. So let's start with the the two presumed starter for now. What do you feel about harrison in harmon and after that talk about the potential of hawkins grant. Yeah you know. I can catch a lot of las vegas raiders football because i tend to value my time. I but i know right but it you know. Hey of i think they know but you know you look at a guy like eric. Air from all accounts super high character. Guy You know solid run support. can step up in the box and make some plays there can get touched up in coverage a little bit That could be a product of the raiders secondary as a whole which is not exactly like he's coming over to the the twenty thirteen e hawks From the raiders. But i think it'd be decent and run support You may have to get him out of there on nickel and bringing a jalen hopkins or grant. But i think doron. And he's just he was made de defense. You know all the time you spent. I don't know if there was any overlap between these new england. But you know that's switch ability That ability to move around and by all accounts is another guy. he's just super high character. Guy observer You know very very Very much in a leader role which is which is good to have it out of a safety And so i like those guys. I think armand will earn a second contract. I don't know about harris But i think harmon. I think he's gonna fit right in. I think he's gonna make a lot of good places now. Think about can give them an extension. But that's putting the car before the horse so Yeah i it's on the two guys. I don't know if they're gonna be the savior for every single little problem that we have. But when you talk about going from ricardo allen and guys who have been there forever It's it's definitely a different look. It is and it's i'm with you. Eric harris i think is he's decent enough. He's got issues that we're going to have to work around You know when you're signing. You know veterans like this to be essentially stopgaps He's i think he's good as you get for sort of that price range. You know so when you're shopping at dollar tree you're not getting top notch target up flirts and we got the best of the dollar tree brand. I you know. I think harris is better than dollar trade. Let's be very clear But i'm with you drawn harmon has. He's he's thirty years old he's been league for wall. I think his mentorship of grant hawkins is very notable. As you mentioned he is someone who has taken both those guys Under his wing. In particular richie grant and that i think is going to pay dividends over long term and i really love. The falcons have brought guys like that. That are mentors. Now hawkins in grant again last year hawkins was able to play a little bit until he got injured in in sort of missed out on the last several games of the season when he was in there I thought he played fairly well. I did not anticipate sort of the jump that he would make from last year to what we saw this. Preseason his individual play preseason looked really a big leap forward. Richie grant i think fans need to understand. Dean pees asks a lot of the players in his second year. He expects all of these guys to know every position in the responsibilities of those positions. And that's gonna put a lot of pressure on those safeties on the linebackers and you know grant is probably gonna need some time to get used to all of those responsibilities. He can't just learn being a safety. He has to know what it's like to be a corner. He has to know what it's like to be linebacker. That is a big ask and for any rookie to come in. It's gonna take time and if he's not on the field up immediately that does not mean he's bust. The talent is there. I think he's going to be fine. I'm really bullish on what he is going to do. On the back half of this year and in the twenty twenty two. So what do you feel about hawkins grant in their long term potential. Yeah and you're totally right about the days. And i think that's why we saw the falcons make a lot of the choices. We did in the draft saying anything groundbreaking. It's been a hundred times a day. Targeted intelligent guys An older guy seniors captains guys who appeared to have their head on their shoulders. The defense is not easy to learn. There's a lot going on But that was that was one that was my that was my own hocken. Felt like hey you know. He looks like he's really developing. I think that's something. A lot of people were banking on to start season And that's very encouraging. Besides i gotta shot him out. When i was out and breakfast got absolutely lost. Our trust i mean i remember. I was like somebody's house. Because i didn't know parker has to. Whoever you to you know one of the fifty tight end behind had out there like somebody just got eight up august. You know he. We saw i make a couple of good plays during the free stephen shoring up that back in play in that centerfield role and i think he's i think he's gonna see a lot of wing-pong especially in nickel and i trust the. I think he's gonna be okay back there. I'm not really worried. About and Yeah richie granted. Didn't look spectacular. But the thing is he's a rookie. you'd like you said there's a lot to learn a decent and i think the guys ahead of him i will allow him to come on and spots and kind of get get some feel for the game. Get some of that game sets. He has great instincts he had things. Ucf that's obviously a big jump in competition. And and and i think he will grow into. I think by you the season we're going to be feeling a lot. Better about rich brent. Yeah hundred percents Do want to note. The falcons have tj green listed as a safety. He's probably going to be more of a quote unquote. Db where he is going to see. Time both at safety and a corner He's a bigger player. I think he's like six foot three but he's a player that i think is well is he's gonna be more of a backup anyways but he's going to be deployed by ps sort of all over the field when he does come in so another player that i'll just mention him. But how do you feel about the safeties and what. What kind of grade would you give this unit. You know this. This is one that. I wrestled with By the way shut off. Cj green good for many or that's body played really well.

"'cause he played well last year but dolton schultz. I think a lot. I really like what we've seen from him. I'm looking over the rest right now. Make sure i don't forget anybody I'm trying to think on defense if there's anybody that really stands out it's tough to say because of the fact that they don't they don't tackle to the ground and practice and you can't hit the quarterback and so randy's only played like a very limited number of preseason snap so it's hard to like really get there. I could see him having a big year. if he's healthy and implies the whole season he certainly is going to get every opportunity. There and i feel the same way about trayvon digs like trayvon digs is going to be a better version. They was last year but he's still going to give up place but he's gonna make a lot of big plays to you have to kind of live with both those but i can see him really elevating himself to like a pro bowl level. This year the i h. I mean what. We're talking about. Like how connor is going to be guided. Air leaning heavily on at. Is there a reason why you feel like. Maybe they're not doing that with tyler or do you feel like it's going to come or what we are head on air. Yeah i would say when it comes still my valuating of players. I mean like center. Centering guard would certainly be might weakest. It's their neither. Neither of those are positions. That i would say spend a ton of time watching so to me. I've thought tyler looked fine in training camp and preseason but i'm huge on actions speak louder than words and the actions are that they're continuing to try and get connor williams snaps. And so that tells me all. I need to know about how they feel about tyler. Be outage there. I don't remember anybody getting these. One snaps buying travis. Frederick you know i mean they were good and here we go but It looks like they're trying to give every opportunity For connor williams if he could if he can do that then they'd have him at center and then you'd move connor mcgovern in this into the starting lineup. So that's certainly a spot to keep an eye on their Still wanna make sure. I don't have game defense kiana neil. We don't know much about him just because this is his first year with the cowboys. But i think he's going to be very good. If late and vander stays healthy. I thought he. I think he's had a very campaign and in preseason like he just he looks really healthy. He seems fresh like a really good relationship with mike. Parsons they genuinely seem to enjoy was interesting in that last episode of hard knocks. You know i know that. They got him playing playing games and stuff like that but they seem to have like a good good bond together. I could see him having a big year. And then maybe maybe Dorrance armstrong to he shown some flashes here there now but yeah those those are probably the ones i feel like. Meg will be very happy if Vander ash had on pattern resurgents. 'cause yeah i have that jersey as well let's not talk about it we We've i still you guys all know we are going to be doing a staging ceremony on makes jersey that she wore when The event that should not be named last year went down week five. You're wearing a lebron james jersey but it was like fifteen different ones like everybody's got a different version of lebron james jersey and just like the detroit sports fan. There's very few guys like that where you can just like. Oh i got this jersey where forever you know which is nice when you say of emmett smith. Yeah melon. yeah i have. I have a hard time doing that more so like other. I'm a fan of all adults. Words seems so like for the rangers. I do not have any current players. Only have adrian bell trey and i will probably not get what anyone's name on a jersey longtime there. I feel feels pretty evergreen. All you say that. "You can kind of expand on And then we'll move on to another hot topic in in cowboys loin. This is kind of what i was going to bring up. I was gonna bring up. The fact that it's appeared as if montana's donovan wilson jerry around curse me cooker and daring and thompson are all kinds of the favorites here so they would need to keep five at least because kasi wilson curse and hooker making this team i think they love dairy and thomson as well i for the life of me. Don't understand it and that's not a knock against staring thomson or trying to be negative. I just think that the other five or better. Football players from what i've seen on the field and let it because the nfl can't get. Its crapped together. I can't actually watch the ultimate of these teams to see how they are actually playing outside of. Just what i see on the broadcast but what i've seen on the broadcast is is room equality making some place And i i feel like with that length with the Couple of years that he played at south carolina at cornerback. Before moving to the safety position. I think that he's still kind of learning it. And i think that he has a ton of upside at the position and he has a tunnel length in length is something that you guys know. I've talked about it a bunch. I hated corner. But i like that length. That safety is you're able to move israel. Mcquay can move a little bit so yeah. It's it's going to be tough. If we lose many ends up you know getting picked up off waivers but at the end of the day man. I just wanna see all these guys succeed and if he gets picked up somewhere ends up going and contributing somewhere else we lost out on a safety but at the end of the day you you don't expect him to be your starter anyways and i said at the end of the day twice which is something that we brought stephen up. Call what you talk about a little bit too. But i was also wondering like do you think there's a cia and again this. This is kind of big brain thinking it. But is there a chance that they only carry five corners. A key Who is like the fifth safety slash six corner in emergency situation. I could see that I guess who would you be. So i i try to at least be a little fair with him. But truthfully like i don't know other than like making some nice run feels like we haven't seen a play in training. Camp that was highlighted by the video team. We haven't seen a plan in preseason. That really just made you go. Wow like it's been a uae off season for jalen smith and it's been talked about a ton. Jerry was on the radio today. This'll be out tomorrow so you probably already heard. It was on the radio today and he was asked about jalen and instead of answering the question on jalen pretty much talked about how good late vander issues but how he struggled stay healthy. How good. mike. Parsons is low. Tau kiana neal's a safety transit but he never said anything about jalen smith. I just wanna talk about john smith for a little bit like where we add on him is. See the you know. He's not going to get cut. I think we're all in agreeance there that that just doesn't make any sense to cut him right now because of his contract situation should they have moved on from him back in march. That's a conversation for different time. They didn't know they were gonna fall under. Michael parsons at gebriel cox. So i don't even like that kind of you know. I think that's a little hindsight twenty twenty to say that they should have done that in march but like i wanted to discuss a jalen smith thing air out all our grievances and in sewer. Everybody is on smith but a cold. I'll start with you where you out on jalen smith. What are your thoughts on his off season. And what are your thoughts on him and his future in dallas. Yeah i mean. I will say some of the edicts of criticism is probably a little bit overboard I mean sorry. I guess he brings apartments because of the brandy tries to build on that which i don't really blame for but i think that's why he rubs some fans there are way With the swipe being everything like that like you said he's decided quiet preseason he can even say maybe a little bit of his appointing bracing. Which is the last thing he really afford. When you bring in three linebackers this off. Season with the calgary Parsons boxing kiana neil You would think he was battling for established role for that starting position. Still you would have had at least one like you say. He's he doesn't have one play. Can point to as. I can still do this or do that. so yeah i mean. He won't be cut because the doesn't make financial sense of. I think we all will be pretty surprised that he's on the team next year but as far as this year. I don't see how he gets more. Snap stan Parsa instant bandrich than neil even cocked. "No kidding so anyway I think that The cowboys look a lot better defensively than they than they have been of course. That's not santa lot. They were terrible last year and they were just mediocre the year before that So i think they have the potential to be a pretty good here. We'll see what happens. I think it's interesting. The fact that the two linebackers that they drafted high one Late bandrich in the first round and to david smith in the second round when he shouldn't have been taken there because he had that catastrophic injury while he was still at notre day They are now the least of the cowboys linebackers We have seen Mike parsons make a bold. Move to the front of the pack here. The first round pick this year. Kiana neil the former safety that dang brought with him from atlanta Is probably number two. And now gebriel cox who was a fourth round. Pick of the cowboys this year. Lsu he's put himself in the mix So it's interesting that they certainly spent a lot of money on jalen smith and i think what we're gonna end up seeing here is at my prediction. Is that two years. Neither one of those guys who's going to be with the team yester- but iowa question that's all that's all well and good but do we see. The cowboys is having a quarterback who's got something of a shoulder issue in the cowboys being a team. That might not have a backup quarterback. But boy they got a lot of mileage out that position did they. They are instead of just having guys that are. Just sit back there with clipboard. Waiting for something to happen you put them in. They don't win. And then they go back to their whole clipboard. On the silent. I agree You know the backup quarterback of the difference with tasting hill is that there were things he could do well on field right as as opposed absolutely as opposed to a backup quarterback who may not move well or who may be a quote unquote good gay manager and the cowboys last year with their defense being poor as it was that they needed something better than a game manager they needed a guy who could move the football up and down the feel now this year with a defense. Big bad quotes after games. And what i heard from him. The other night was number one. He says he's never seen a side of the ball. Gets flipped faster than the cowboys. Defense was flipped in the off season. Meaning going from all time. Were just not all worse. But all-time bad one of the worst to respectable. He's saying just overnight. It flipped a respectable. I'm going to give him respectable. I'm seeing flashes. Every time i watched the defense somebody else jumps off my screen. Starting with your man michael. Yes but here's the thing is hard for me to say how good they are when we do. I think we can come to the conclusion that the texans aren't going to be very good offensively. They're decent on defense decent. But we know they're not they'll be decent offense and the side of the ball. That mike mccarthy was crawling about with his defense going up against that offense. We know they're not going to be that good. And that's being nice skip. I think the thing. If i've seen two guys. I like armstrong kid. I think he's shown flashes going armstrong doors. Michael parson is legit. It's just like i thought he would be. I mean for someone his side. He doesn't look as big. He's lied to forty to forty five cash. Looked like a two twenty five to thirty way that he moves right to burrow cox. There are other linebacker that they took a rookie. He is legit trust me. He's going to fight harder and harder for playing time and they moved. I don't think it'll be reached those levels with the safeties. But it's certainly not the strongest position. I'd say on the depth chart. Yeah this one is going to have i think. A lot of question marks Honestly probably one of the ones where it may be better than what. I think we anticipated. It would be going into the season So let's sort of set the backdrop last year with the twenty twenty season. We lost demonte. Akc to an achilles injury which was just absolutely dreadful. Luck because of the fact that both ricardo allen and kiani will also suffered the achilles injury and then of course count and they also had a tornado. Yells years back So devastating injury to casey in the year where they were running. A lot of three safety looks kiani. Looked like he was a little bit better than the at been. Ricardo fell off a cliff. And of course going to this off season we had. We started a defense with three starting safeties. None of them are returning. Ricardo allen was cut primarily for cap reasons. But i i would say his performance fell off a little bit as well On the they opted not to try to retain him Probably because of the injury history. Of course he ended up signing with dallas and then k z also signed with dallas both Chasing after former. Head coach of falcons dan quinn. Who is now the offensive coordinator with the cowboys So that has set up the team to where they basically had to restock the position Almost entirely the only real carryover to this point is a player. We'll talk about a little. Bit jalen hawkins but matt right now. We're looking at the depth chart. You and i talked a little bit earlier this week. I was on your podcast. Which was fun we did. We talked about safeties. We talked about Richard grant the player that draft in the second room. But what's interesting to me is right now. If we look at the depth chart the two names at the top are the two veterans air karras and doron harmon. These guys are obviously intended to be stopgaps. they're both on a one year deal Neither guy is is the kind of guy that you're planning to build the future the position around but there should be serviceable starters drawn harmony. Think is Had some good seasons as well So what are your thoughts on. Eric harris drawn harmon. What they offer to the falcons this year. And what you think. Their potential for starting the entire year is going to be. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said there stopgaps. That's what they were brought in for. You want veteran presences in the building. Because you knew you were gonna overhaul the position. You knew you're going to get younger there. Which is what they did. When they drafted reggie grant fortieth overall. And then you know as you mentioned they retained jalen hawkins who the twenty twenty draft pick so again not sure hawkins if he's a long-term answer there the early reports at a camper promising now that he's he's made an impact to he's made plays on the ball so i am intrigued to see what he can bring. And you know what. I would say that hawkins before i get into some of the others. I think he's a better fit in dean pees defense and he would have been had dan quinn in the long-term head coach in. And i say that. Because i think hawkins is a bit of a twitter like he didn't fall into that prototypical strong safety dan. Quinn looks for allah kiana neil. And he's not really you know the cover one rangy free safety that you look for in say you know the prototype narrow thomas. He's more of a guy that again can do both things ten play. Closer to the line of scrimmage but he can also drop deep. You don't want him playing that cover one has said Would rather be covered to split safety. Look which again fits right into. What ps two. He runs more covered to than you know. Cover warner covers three. So i think there could be something there with him You know we'll see what the future holds. But i am more intrigued and we're optimistic about his fit enroll in impedes off a defense long-term. Then i would have been in dan. Quayle now looking at the veterans again. Eric would have never guessed he'd be the first free agent signing in the arthur smith terry gano era. But you know here. We are A guy that they prioritized in you know. I guess terry did have a connection to Being that eric harris started his career in the nfl. With the new orleans saints so a guy that he knows a lot about and again someone that Is is a great locker room presence going to be a great mentor already has shown already to be a great mentor. Richie grant as those to train together in the off season even prior to grant even becoming a falcon. So i thought that was pretty interesting and again i i do. Expect him to get a lotta run. I mean he was. He was a two year starter. The last couple years With the raiders again. I consider him a competent level player. He is not someone you want long-term but certainly can get the job done And you know hopefully it's more in a limited role and they and they work in the younger guys now withdrawn harmon similar.

I mean i have zero qualms with it. But i mean garrett gilbert to me. The reason gilbertson honorable mention is he was fine. He wasn't amazing. I don't even think ben to is amazing. In fact if you look at their stats for the night. Cooper rush finished seven of thirteen for eighty nine yards. We're not giving him any real up here. Garrick gilbert seven sixteen for eighty yards i rating of fifty nine point four. The lowest of the group bend nucci did have the touchdown. He was six a fourteen for forty six yards on the evening. Also been to new. She had a chance to win the game And didn't and not to kind of harper or kind of just dwell on that but That is a factor. That i think we all have to consider here so it is but garrett gilbert looked serviceable looked fine looked competent. And really. i mean that's an important thing right now. Nobody cares about the win loss record or we care about is the progress made we care about is the status of certain cowboys. The injury bug bit rather hard on friday night so we have a lot to get. We have winners. We have losers we have honorable. Mentions we have some highlights. Get too by the way. We'll have a full videos worth of highlights on saturday morning available for you as well because we never sleep in fact that's kind of the theme here when it comes to tonight's game Let's start off with some comments. Christopher lopez. i think the offense played a better in the third quarter. I agreed things did kind of get together. Romeo greece's offense did wake up in the second half george just coming at just. Cb sean rat just wants to talk about in the sean Romeo also says defense is definitely looking better. All around christopher adds that cox played solid nothing spectacular but solid. I agree with that jalen says keanu. Neil looked good though and mike. Parsons yes it was a very very very very promising night for the dallas cowboys in certain capacity. Let's start with some highlights from this game. I'll start with actually before the game just because this is such a big talking point right now with the cowboys. Dak prescott didn't play in this game but did throw which is an important. Sign of positivity and optimism. Moving forward great to see data looking good looking promising. We like that very very very much. Lyle collins play in the dallas cowboys uniform in over a year in like a year and a half and he looked pretty good doing this the way he's handling bom all right. That's what we wanna see from lyle. I don't think there's any doubt that kiana neal is a winner for the cowboys. If you recover a fumble like mike. Parsons day last week. You're going to be a winner. The two linebackers at the cowboys added this offseason. The primary linebackers that they added. Mike parsons the first round. pick theon. o.'neil the biggest free agent acquisition in terms of name recognition. That is a really positive step in the right direction for the cowboys organization for their ability to evaluate talent for dan quinn's defence etc etc. The other one that we're going to talk about ran out. Lyle collins we just played the highlight just played the clip. Lyell is really looking promising and that is something that is going to go a long way. This offensive line. We all know what's challenging the depth department last year. This wasn't a terrible game for talion sexy and so. That's kind of a good thing to but lyle collins playing well is something that we all certainly want to see now. Let's see what you have to say in terms of your suggestions for winners. Delun antics has dorrance armstrong. He is quietly having a solid preseason and camp and you know what the lunatic i agree. We know that he loves during armstrong head to sax on the night in the first half albeit an almost had an insane tipped interception that he almost came down with dorrance armstrong. Really coming along really. We've been waiting for this for a long time. Nice to see that progress being made Armstrong definitely a winner tonight. I am not going to go far enough to say that bending nucci is a winner for me but he definitely is an honorable mention as his gear. Gilbert's hardest for that but both been newt gingrich Gilbert are honorable. Mentions for me Again it's hard to really say the indonesia's a winner i suppose. He wins in the context that he had to have a great game to keep his chances at making this team's roster alive but Overall still not a winner for me but a very positive step in the right direction. I still don't think that he is going to be on this roster but still a nice moment for bendon nucci in fact all of you talking about touchdown the cowboys have now played. "Expect guys like a lua akon and then russell gauge on the other side of the ball to grow into major contributors and the fact that they have is is one of the things that dmitrov deserves the hat tip for even even if there's not a lot of other things that people want to give them credit for right now which i understand so yeah but i'm excited for his his year too. I think the two of them. Dion johnson lua connor. Going to be terrific this to me. The the growth of the foyer from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty was so substantial He contributed everywhere. The one linebacker to you know he had two interceptions For sixty five yards. I mentioned the four forced fumbles. I think three of them came in one game. But that's that's a take away at all from what he was doing on that side of the ball. You know the three sacks of which i think is something we talk about. We'll be getting to the second half of the podcast and how these guys are going to factor into the pass rush this year in that may be necessary but boy it i think was one of the pleasant surprises in the disastrous twenty twenty Because there wasn't a lot of great performances on the defense gravy jarrett continued to be greg jarrett But you saw a bunch of guys sort of a fell off. You know guys like ricardo allen who you know just didn't live up to the billing of a starting free safety anymore and then you lose players that you know between the offseason with guys like kiana neil and Casey who both went to dallas. This was I think one of the bright spots for the defense and Dion jones sort of returning to form after dan quinn I wanna point that out as well. It seemed like a fire was lit under dion after Dan was gonna win in. That's a credit to raheem morris when he took over. I think he finally got these guys playing at a much better level than they were under dan. Quinn at includes dion jones. But these two guys are. Starters are a quality quality. Do oh and as you know the dave Foyer starting at middle linebacker. This year and dion jones moves to the will a lot of people feel like that was something that was holding them back as well and that foyer was a better fit at the mike and that Really having jones at that linebacker gives him the freedom to do what he does. Best and that's roam around the field and go after you know the tight ends in the running back and not have to worry about all the assignments that the mike is going to be responsible for So with that. I want to talk about mike walker. Talked about how these guys are gonna be used this year that maybe a little bit different from what we saw under dan quinn but before we do that. "Know with mike mccarthy running the show i mean. It's a great question. And i think big expectations or maybe not a lot of us. Just here on this podcast. Thinking that kellen moore was going to be this inventive mind and help bring them into the twenty first century. Not quite sure. He's the one that deserves to shoulder the burden for what they did last year. Where if mccarthy shackled him. I think we'll get a better indication. You talked a little bit about z. Coming in better shape. I think it's always disconcerting when you're talking about running back the not only posted career lows across the board last year but that is rushing yards per game have declined every year. He's been in the league so with running backs. Typically we talk about a three year lifespan. so to have a renaissance a resurgence. Unless guys are adrian peterson and they can play until their mid thirties. You begin to wonder about how that workload will go. And i think you hit on a key point talking about tony. Polar oftentimes last year looking like the more explosive back. And maybe making a case to be the number one curious how that works share. Goes the other big thing with the receiving core depending on where you read. We've seen differing reports on the health. Status of amari. Cooper saying he's not quite one hundred percent but he's real close. He's trying to be better than he's ever been but there's some skepticism about him ever getting back to one hundred percent. This season knowing that he had this procedure done. I want to march and april. You'd think by camp you'd be full speed and ready to go amari cooper to me is just a little touch overrated. And he's been playing injured. It feels like every single season. He's gutting some type of injury out. And that's why i think it's vital. That cd lamb takes that next step. You get blake darwin back. Zeke is interesting because the touches are starting to pile up. Got a lotta touches. In college was a lot of touches early on his career now. He is declined a little bit but again was out of shape last year. The offensive line was horrific although tony pollard ran behind the same offensive line. But he looks like he's in shape if you saw him on the sidelines during the preseason game last week he looks like he's drop some weight now if you way him with all of the nose rings on probably weighs the same as last year. His nose is starting to look like my mother's christmas tree lot ornaments But he does look like he's in shape and so i think you'll end up having a little better season especially with four of the five guys along the o. Line returning healthy but again tyron smith getting up there in age mcmartin getting up there in age that that's ultimately the big question. This needs to be a passing offense because that's where the weapons are and if you can get a solid ground game to compliment that that's huge and we did see like dak at this point. Cleary's earned the contract. I don't know if he is an elite quarterback but we saw massive dip once. He laughed right passing success. Rate dipped ten percent without dak last year. It was a top six offense and a lot of key metrics through those five weeks. It was just the the turnover luck that got him. When you look at the other side of the ball pain plenty of new faces coming in defensively. The cowboys add alden. Smith antoine woods. Or excuse me they. Add kiana neil demont. Akc me cooker and mike parsons through the draft. They lose out and smith antoine woods. Sean lee who we know was on the decline. And your woods when you dig into this team. They of franchise worse four hundred seventy three points. Last year. they gave up more than thirty points. In eight games they were twenty third overall in total defense after being fixture in the top ten the previous three seasons disease where we apply the pain cliche. You don't have to be great. Just try and be below average and it's a significant upgrade. Well they started off great with that approach in their hiring of defensive coordinator so you know. I think they know what the problem is. And obviously it's it's defensively jerry. Jones knows that you'll look the first. Six selections that dallas made is in the top one hundred fifteen pictures all defense six picks all defense. Top hundred and fifteen picks. So it's it's a clear problem and when you look at who they played. It was the second easiest schedule of offense. As last year they finished twenty fifth in epa per player out and so they were really bad and not much was done in free agency. Because there's issues there so they weren't able to improve via free agency. That's not always the best route to do it but sometimes you have to go acquire elite talent. And that's the only way you can do it. Believe kiana neal was the highest price for agent. Dallas sign at four million. No surprises buddy. Dan quinn taken over neal's not even a projected starter in he's converting to linebacker so that was their big splash defensive free agent signing now you kind of hinted at this there is one direction ago and it's up. I love demarcus lawrence. He's a stud top ten pass rush win rate again. Last year. he's in his prime. He sets the edge pretty well. You hope randy gregory doesn't lose his mind because when he's on his on linebacker health should improve of jalen. smith can get back to his eighteen form. That'd be huge. There's a possibility that to some degree. Dallas can hide a really bad secondary because they're projected to face the second were scheduled passing offenses this year even last year. Though with the bad schedule still twenty six explosive pass defense so that is really the troublesome area it was clear jerry wanted jc horn. That didn't happen so there's a void at corner still. There's not a single corner on the cowboys. Roster that graded out. Positively last year. The best graded corner was trayvon digs. He finished in the bottom fifteen percent alleman qualifying corners and adjusted yards allowed coverage nap. So that is a really problem. Area and it magnifies when you you have a league. that's trending towards being passed. I so that is. That is an area of concern. The other issue is the interior of the defensive line. It's really bad. They got mauled last season. Upfront finished thirty eighth and defensive line yards thirty first and run stop win. rate over. Fifty five percent runs great successful. There's rumors right now that sixth round rookie defensive tackle quinton bohana having a real shot at playing time right away. So that tells you all you need to know about the interior of the cowboys line. But i think a good offense one with you know healthy dak a good oh line have a slew of weapons will help the cowboys defense because if they can play with leads i think they're in a better position especially because they seem to be better suited as pass rushers than than run stuffers. I liked the parsons pick. I guess if he can become a pass rusher little bit more like linebacker just doesn't have a ton of value so when you take a guy that early in the draft linebacker makes me a little nervous but if you can provide pass rush value which appears you. Can that might not be a bad selection. The cox pick was was pretty good so i think there's two rookies that could contribute pretty early if the cowboys defense can improve slightly and the offense is top. Five this win. Total might not be all that inflated this year but if you don't have those things happen nine and a half probably a decent under bet when and of course the cowboys you would think are going to have their hands full relatively speaking with division that a should be slightly improving in one of those teams that there seems to be a lot of optimism about would be the new york giants when you.

Mccarthy said which is gonna be very intriguing in that old linebacker conversation. But one thing. I wanted to ask you about this. Deepens david is that i actually looked this up. All by myself That since last year the cowboys have added. I believe this is correct. Six defensive backs to the roster and that does not can't kiana neil who is now a hybrid linebacker or malaysia cooker which i was at that point on the he had actually signed anything yet. He is not yet. Yeah that could come. As soon as today he will so that will add what that will make it seven. Then i guess by your calculation. Yeah and really. You're seeing that across the defensive side of the ball but but you're right. This is a completely remade secondary and often when you're struggling and we've seen this before you throw numbers at it at at positions but it still comes down to who is in those numbers. You can't buy numbers you know and But but when you don't have a lot of options when you've been struggling it to me the other issue is to is. You have all these you have this unsettled mass out there at some of these positions. And it's like okay. You also need to work through in limited time on what you've had in the past to get all these guys snap to get some separation So you can actually you know. Get a pecking order. You can actually feel good about someone you're gonna put in these positions and and so you have to balance that as well when you have as many new people on the defensive side of the ball as you do and you really have some spots that are completely up for grabs. You know pretty quickly. You have to go okay. This is the order. Nahla start working these guys because we have to see if they cause sometimes with increase that snaps get exposed in practice and it's a it's a balancing act here so i think it's still look this defense and going to be settled. Start the season it will be younger and faster than it was last year Going into the season and probably a little more depth. But but i think it's gonna take a while to work through all this as bad as they were last year. Are they a great point about when you're bringing in so many guys. There's only so many snaps that everybody gets and then it's not productive then you know if you're trying to do new things and you got so many guys involved in it than the guys are going to start at not gotten enough wraps in training camp and then you could also slow. Start the season. They're going to have to start making decisions fairly quickly. So with that in mind david. Who's gonna be the starting cornerbacks start to seize up. There's no question that trayvon digs is going to be one of the starting cornerback You know right now. Anthony brown Is the other starting corner i think. Ideally i think sooner rather than later in the season rather early they would like one of the rookies to move in there and have brown the third corner But i think right now you would go brown. You know what we saw in the off season program and not as many camp sean right Actually popped and show more than calvin joseph at coroner their second round. Pick and so yeah. I think the You know calvin. Joseph was in the covert protocol. Miss some time wasn't in good shape and the all season and the sean right really took advantage of that. So i think the inherent lead that calvin jokes are had by being a higher draft. Pick i think evaporated coming into this camp Having said that. I think calvin joseph says look pretty good in this camp and i think he's You know he has really impressive up speed I haven't seen him beaten over the top yet. he starting to flash a little bit here so I think that. Off of calvin joseph and in nation ri- they like what they've seen from both of them. So far i thought national right. Look good early in camp and i i think he struggled here over these last couple of days. But but but i would say that that either right or joseph They would love to have one of those guys. Starting next trayvon digs early in the season. Maybe not on week one but early in the season. So donna wilson starting strong safety. Strong safety You know monterey ca z. Is getting some some run. They're now free. Safety is is is a bigger question. About how they they fill in there. And you know mike mccarthy Went out of his way a few days ago to say their interest in me cooker in no way indicated that they are unhappy with where they are at safety But then he talked about the position and the only guy he mentioned was donovan. Wilson which still leaves you one more starter to go and depth. So they are concerned about the safety position especially free safety. And i think that's one of the big questions Defensively on the defensive side of the ball You know they were. They aren't linebackers. Just kind of sorting through how you're gonna figure out to use them and they're also kinda going the wave mentality in the defensive line as well It people are excited because randy gregory's looked very good in practice. I will say reserve any excitement on offensive and defensive lineman how they look early and camp before pads or put on and you know the the cowboys have been here. We still have not had a padded practice yet. That will come on wednesday so once the pads come on. I think you get a better determination of just where the offensive and defensive lineman are right now. It's more about the skill players in the perimeter. Guys real quickly because we need to get out so Tyron smith and allow collins both looking pretty healthy. Most again put on the pads. But yeah and you know tara. Smith is told people this is the first time that that he's had Neck pain even since his days. At usc this is the first time since his early days. At usc he has had no neck pain whatsoever. And you can actually tell the difference in his demeanor Smiling moris engaging more with people. Which i think is an indication that physically.

"You've you're talking about when people rotating up. I think kristen hills a guy that could get may be sixty percent of the snaps but on passing down. Because i think he's better trying to pressure And get a gift to the cornerback. I make him more comfortable than he is. The stopping the run. So yeah who comes in goes out and at the moment it's carter say if i was a four to make a bet on it. I'd say that carl's watkins. Probably in more of the shakiest position as far as can with the team so now having said that you probably would sharpies the gonna wind up making the team. Because i don't think he's going to ask if we have so much snow. As i said i'm not sure they've even got exactly. The position designations down. And i'm not sure that's going to be as important as they used to be. We maximize hill lot more. People who are like power on crawford was where sometimes he's sense. Events by new defensive tackles a five three. You know by kick out. Be a several players. I think they could do some of that with so it's going to be fun. Well let's move a step back on the defensive side of the ball will Take a look at the back positions. I guess i've come around on it. And i think a lot of it. Is you know the media buzz around it but some of it is what some of his teammates are saying as well mike. Parsons appears to be the real deal from a leadership. Standpoint appears to be the type of guy that wants to take on that leadership role. And i think if he steps into that early in training camp he probably does have the inside track to start at the beginning of the season. So i think. Mike parsons is kind of in in the driver seat right now in control his own destiny to allow himself to be starting in week. One what's getting kind of. And how they you're talking about new lines up as the the guy officer marcus lawrence where you're going to have to mark lawrence you're going to have three interior defensive linemen and another guy who had been kind of be either the offbeat at outside linebacker or the designated pass rusher position that time we could see. Michael parsons get. Let's start right off the bat is. He's very good and apparently all phases game He's a linebacker guy. One making contact running back. Maybe he winds up with james smith waiting dandridge or with one of those two and kiana meal and then wait a minute. Yano neil might wind up in that aung on rushing down so that was the first team pairing at a ota's and then but you know than other times. They seem to be running the smith and batteries with the ones. I mean that's gonna just have to sort out do it. And that's one where watching who's down there in the eleven eleven at at training camp With probably be interesting. And that's why. I'm going to try to seidel up this april out there done before because i'm not sure i could figure how by myself so i'm just gonna be leaning over their shoulder taking cribbing off their note. So if if. I asked you what you were hoping. For what would you say because for me. I think my hope is that mike. Parsons flushes himself out. Is the number one linebacker of the group and leighton vander esch find some consistency We heard the quote that he added some body armor this offseason. I assume that just means strengthen that he didn't strap up a bunch of phone booths cloudy. Mike cheeseburger mike But either way. I think for me. I'm hoping mike parsons. in leighton. vander. Esch are the one in the two from the linebacker position and really. I'm not looking at starting three linebackers to start the season. I think i'm good with two. I'll take my pass rushers. And then i'll get my My five secondary players out there that will go over here in a bit. Yeah i. I don't think i would disagree with that. I y i i- awfully baby. Oddly i kind of bowling for bandrich turn around and give the thing reason to at least consider Doing an extension with him They didn't take this fifth year option. They would have to have an extension which can be manipulated to take advantage of the increase in caps. Like you know maybe but not saying. It's a good idea i off. All linebackers with cowboys are gonna do that. Whether we want to ops is just getting. I'm not getting carried away with like dreaming. I mean if leighton vander esch plays well that he earns himself another contract. And that's great right. That that raises rising or soils. Yes but I'll just take him settling into position in type of play that he played a couple of years ago that we haven't seen since he's really been dinged up considerably the last several seasons. And even though. I think we're down. It's fairly clear. There are five leader full linebacker of but four guys with just mentioned and Djibril cox cox's. He was quiet. He looks to be probably number five. Yeah they're not going to carry less five. You know blinders that whole idea of a designated patch because mica parsons is a guy. That's getting used in that role thumb and it would seem that kiana neil could do they ask jails with could do that. Leighton vander so. I think there are times bigger is telling you this linebackers out there. But it's really two guys that are flying linebacker and one of the guys from the linebacker rooms this lining up as a pass rusher affect you. If that's what you're talking about that flexibility. All of a sudden these position definitions are locked more fluids than the use to see. Yeah again it's gonna be really fun seeing number nine with his hand in the ground Rush rush the passer. That'll be very interesting to see. So let's move on to the secondary then One spot. I assume has spoken foreign on. Might say the other is spoken for just based on contract alone. But it's not really given that anthony brown is going to secure that. Second cornerback. spot. I obviously think digs. I think you're with me. Digs is locking up one of those spots So there were there. Were free players. That i felt like you didn't call them. Starters yes for sure and that was lawrence digs. And i believe donovan wilson. I'll promptly less firm. But i just really don't see him anywhere. Yeah it'll be your box say starving consistency.

"The show as we continue our offseason coverage for the new york giants. I'm jody williams. Joined by chris flom and as we did last episode today we will be reviewing viewing another one of the new york giants opponents for the twenty twenty one season and as we did the egos on the last episode. We're doing another. Nfc east team today. Being the dallas cowboys. So chris this is a talented squad. One that underperformed in the first season under mike mccarthy. A lot of people had super high expectations for this cowboys team yet. Losing dak prescott also struggling early with dak prescott. They were able to put up a ungodly amount of yards through the air but defensively they were like swiss cheese and i think that before we talk a little bit about dak chris. I think we need to dive deep into discussing what dallas was able to do to vastly improve their defense because they went move on from their previous defensive coordinator dan. Quinn former falcons. Head coach takes over in that role. Who is known as a fantastic coach and then all of these draft picks as well as the signing of kiana. Neil most notably. Mike parsons to bill cox osa over digging zoo. They went heavy in fixing this defense. Going against the stereotype. If you will that. Mike mccarthy does not care about the defensive side of the ball. They put a lot of effort in bolstering that group. I'm not sure how you could watch their games last year and not care about their defense at least if you are coming at it from all or coming at it from a dallas cowboys perspective at all. I think fans of the giants eagles washington. They loved the dallas defense last year. But mike mccarthy couldn't not care about it and i'm right there with you the getting back prescott. Back is their single biggest improvement over the offseason. But i biggest. It's getting defense period because for probably the first two thirds of the season and then again at the end of the season. The dallas defense was basically nonexistent Beat up they had Dads guys missing the to injury but mike nolan at his defensive scheme. The guys they had they just were not playing well. There were not playing cohesively. There were very clearly set up. Kind of like the The old colt defense and this was something we know during the season. They're built like the colts. Defense under peyton manning where they're built to play with a lead and built to pressure quarterbacks. At least in theory they just were not doing that last year. And this. you're getting dan quinn Try to put the pieces together to get them. Playing well They're revamping their secondary to be kind of in that seattle. Seahawks mold with big long big quarterbacks. They've got digs and they've got a israel mcquay do a couple of other additions that secondary edition. Two keanu neil. They've got some guys on the front seven said they added. Mike parsons who we both loved. In the draft process. It was painful to watch dallas draft him. But i'm also kind of used to. That is would be the third time. Dallas has drafted linebacker. I really wanted to see in giants blue. Actually fourth time account sean lee and then they also editorial cox who i was a fan of. You know very athletic off ball linebacker oso digs another guy. I really liked who plays with just ridiculous leverage and explosive power even though he isn't very big so they did a lot to try to get this defense up to where it can carry its own weight and capitalize on the pressure. Their offense hopes to put off opposing. Defenses you really covered a ton here. All these moves that they made and the one thing that stands out to meet dan quinn taking over and then the effort to recreate almost what he had in his time as the defensive coordinator for the seattle seahawks which was having tall long aggressive corners. And they're able to replicate that with getting israel. And they sean right. Who are both six foot. Four defensive backs now expected to play safey safety nation. Right is a a quarter. A lot of these guys are tolan long and then they're going to try and create some pressure with all these different heads that they have along the defensive line improve the linebacker core of that was dragging a little bit. It'll be interesting to see how certain players line up. But i think the addition of mike. Parsons alone is going to be a move. That is really going to improve this defense. That is what makes i think dallas yet again and i. It almost feels as though we come in every season saying this is the year that dallas is going to be good. Any analyst always says that they always come in believing that dallas is finally going to get over the hump and they're finally going to be competitive for the giants sake. I hope that's not true yet again. But this actually might season where we see progress for the dallas cowboys. You're returning with dak prescott. The defense is young. it's explosive. It has a good leader in charge and bleeding that defense so a lot of things are trending in the right direction for that defensive unit which was clearly the major weakness and i think the only thing that was holding them back until back prescott hurt. I definitely agree. And i think kind of the nightmare scenario for giants fans is that parsons has the same impact on the dallas. Defense that chase young hat on washington's defense last year we knew washington's front seven was good before they got chase young but he kind of set everything off and that defense was really able to drag an offense that was kind of listless. It didn't because of injury situations it didn't have that steady quarterbacking presence that you need for an offense to carry its own weight and that defense in washington and the pressure was able to generate the disruptive news able to bring to the table really dragged them to the division title. And i think the nightmare scenario here is that. Mike parsons with his ability to explode downhill as a pass. Rusher you know. We talked about depending on how you feel about jalen phillips in his health. Mica parsons could have been the best edge rusher in the nfl draft this year but he also has that ability to play in space. And then you pair him with leighton vander esch with debris hawks jalen smith and you have a really athletic linebacking core. You've got a trusted hill. Nevin gallimore also dig zoue demarcus lawrence. Randy gregory is back. They added carlos bookie basham in the draft and all of a sudden this dallas front seven. It is not a unit. You can sleep on. If dan quinn can get him all pulling in the same direction yes certainly in the and this is something that is clearly improved for this team Their defense is getting so much better on on just so many different levels that we're seeing but the other thing too that we're talking about here that is important for the success of the dallas cowboys is the return of dak prescott who goes down with the very bad injury to his ankle. Obviously playing against the giants in a situation where logan ryan comes up to tackle. And you get dak prescott back playing at the level. He was for those first few games before he got hurt. He is going to be a problem for opposing defenses. They were putting up a target for reason. They've got a really talented receiver group. Their offensive line is always going to be one of the better ones in the nfc east. Even though that it's starting to age and it's dragging a little bit in terms of being fully healthy all the time regardless this offense now returning with dak prescott not having to play a who's who at quarterback with benvenuti nucci and coop. Arosh andy dalton. Were instead here back with dak prescott and he can actually lead the squad. Assuming he's fully healthy. Yeah you know. Like i said before getting dak prescott back is probably the single biggest improvement dallas made and was on just ridiculous pace before he.

"The enemy so on this podcast going through taking a deep dive into the eagles i four of next year in the previous segment. We talked about The the atlanta falcons and the san francisco forty niners the eagles i two opponents here in twenty twenty one in week three they will take on the dallas cowboys their final game of september the eagles the cowboys again like every other team. These first three teams all had losing records. Last year. the cowboys went six and ten last year. Third in the nfc east bay had a negative seventy eight point differential. This was not a good team without dak prescott sling in the rock and of course we all know how awful the defense was now. They do have some key additions and re signings and of course the big one is getting dak prescott back from injury. That is a huge. That is a huge guide. And get back into that lineup. Somebody who can actually throw the football safety. Neal is in dallas now along with edge. Rusher terrell basham defensive lineman brent urban offensive. Tackle tie naski defensive back demonte casey and cornerback jordan lewis all big addition editions for the cowboys. And not not not a lot of big names. there except for Kiana neil coming coming over key draft editions for the cowboys linebacker. Mike parsons their first rounder. And cornerback kelvin. Joseph too big names. That should make an impact right away and key departures quarterback andy dalton and safety xavier woods quarterback and offensive. Tackle cameron. erving a linebacker. Joe thomas also left the team. The cowboys did very little in free. Agency this off season especially surprisingly on defense where they were abysmal. Last season now the cowboys do have cat problems. Thanks to a big money deals to a very top heavy roster including all of the money they just gave dak prescott. You really wonder if jerry jones's regretting regretting the big money deal. That they gave ezekiel elliott. The but the return of dak prescott could propel dallas to the top spot in the division after all prescott still has skill position players. All around him amari. Cooper you have michael gallup ceedee. Lamb ezekiel elliott still an elite runner. that's a big question that the dallas cowboys have to answer. Is this still going to be an offense that runs that start begins and ends with ezekiel elliott. Or is this going to be an offense that let's tack cook. I mean you just pay a ton of money but the cowboys have always wanted to pound. The rock with ezekiel elliott. I is he still that guy. I mean they have run him into the ground. Is he still the bell cow or is tony pollard. Gonna get more of a shot this year. i'm not so sure. Ezekiel elliott is still an elite runner in this league. And let's talk a little bit about dak prescott because here's the thing with dak prescott. He's clearly better than carson. Wentz was okay. That argument is done. Dak prescott is a good quarterback we could all see the drop in the cowboys level of play when dak prescott was not was not under center right. So that's obvious. Dak prescott is a good quarterback. He's a very good quarterback and he's a good team leader and it seems like it. It was the right move for the cowboys to go ahead and resign him. But but at some point dak prescott to truly be considered an elite quarterback in this league. He's going to have to win a playoff game or two at some point. Isn't he in order for fans to truly believe he's the franchise guy. Isn't he going to have to take this team on a playoff run at some point. Now maybe that would have happened last year and of course the defense is not his fault. But it's not exactly like this guy has a long track record of leading the cowboys deep into the postseason if that has been the criticism of carson wentz during his time in philadelphia. Doesn't that also have to be some of the criticism at dak prescott. Why why is that. Not a thing that that anyone talks about. Prescott has played three playoff games in his career and his rookie season. He took the cowboys to the playoffs. That where he lost thirty four thirty one in a game in a home game with the eagle. The cowboys were were hosting the green bay. The green bay packers. He went twenty four thirty eight. Sixty three percent completion. Thirty three hundred two yards three touchdowns one interception and one of the three point two rating. Certainly not his fault. They lost that game and then in twenty eighteen they made the playoffs and dak prescott won a playoff game at home against seattle. The cowboys won twenty four to twenty two not. He did not have a great game that day. But did okay. Twenty two of thirty three. For two hundred. Twenty six yards one touchdown one interception passer rating of eighty three point six and then The dallas cowboys went into la to take on the rams and lost thirty to twenty two again. Prescott did not have a great day that day. Twenty of thirty two. For two sixty six one touchdown no interceptions and ninety nine point two rating but the cowboys just couldn't get much going offensively against the rams team that would go on to go to the playoffs and then in two thousand nineteen. We saw that cowboys team just fall apart as they came to philadelphia and was unable to do anything late in the season and then of course last year. He is lost for the season with the injury early in the year. So i mean it's not it's not that prescott has choked in the playoffs. That's certainly not what i'm talking about. But he has yet to take the dallas cowboys on a deep playoff run and until he does that. It's fair to question whether or not they truly truly should have given him all of the money that they gave him but dak prescott is their guy and he's a very talented quarterback. My guess is that there will be a deep playoff run in his career at some point. And maybe it'll happen this season but given the state of the defense. I'm not so sure about that. Safety o'neill was their biggest defensive free agency signing and listen hill help. It was a good low cost. Move especially for this point in the offseason but and they did spend a ton of draft picks on defense including first round linebacker. Mike parsons so they did spend a lot of time in the draft going after the defense. Dallas defense allowed an average of twenty nine point six points per game last year and they did not exactly add a ton of weapons to the defense. They also lost for the second straight year. Their best cornerback this year. It was a woozy and free agency. So they've brought aboard a new. Defensive coordinator former falcons head coach dan quinn. He's going to try to work magic with the defense. That could once again be very very very bad because they don't have a lot of accomplished. Nfl players on defense. It's it's going to be a work in progress and it. Sounds like it's gonna be another high-scoring Season for the dallas cowboys. They're going to be involved in a lot of Forty two thirty five games at sounds. Good the defense. just you know. Maybe hey who knows. Maybe maybe the the the draft picks and maybe some of the young players. They're they're able to step it up but I wouldn't count on it if i were a cowboys fan. So you just have to kind of hope that dak prescott return and all of the talent that they've dissembling offense means that they're going to be they're gonna win a lot of high scoring games and get themselves to ten or eleven here in twenty twenty one. Of course but this is a team that is on paper loaded. "They were much better by terms of point differential. But let's not kid ourselves. The atlanta falcons were not a good team last year. And they really haven't been a good team for the last few years even with julio jones on that roster they're coming off three straight losing seasons and they have ever since they blew that twenty eight to three lead against the patriots in the super bowl. They have what brandon league out in likes to call b. l. e. They have big loser energy. They just they are a team. That just is waiting for the bottom to fall out anytime something. How many late leads as that team choked away over these last few years. It's become their calling card. It's one of the reasons dan quinn was like. Oh they just needed a culture change in that team so now they have new coach. Arthur smith former offense coordinator from the tennessee. Titans coming to an coming from an organization that did manage to flip the script. I mean think about what he did with ryan. Tannehill that tennessee offense so there is hope in atlanta that you bring a guy like arthur smith here and it changes the dynamic of the football team. You start to think okay. We're not losers. We'd we're not chronically bad. We don't have to be this awful football team that blows leads. That can't close games out. But they've got to do it. I and and the talent in atlanta is not what it once was now. they did make some key additions. This offseason They signed running back. Mike davis tight end lease smith edge. Rusher barker. Cbs mingo edge. Rusher brandon copeland cornerback. Fabian moreau safety eric harrison safety durant they drafted of course they're big draft pick was tight end. Kyle pits also safety. Richie grant offensive. Lemon jalen mayfield. The big draft picks for them and they did lose guard. Just mcrae center. Alex mack safety. Kiana neil defensive back kizzee and safety ricardo allen so. The falcons were really restricted in what they could do in free agency. This offseason like the eagles. They were pretty much hamstrung by salary. Cap can stretch constraints with much of that money being eaten up by matt ryan and julio jones those contracts really helped make the atlanta roster at pretty inflexible and so they didn't go out and improve this team in free agency the big addition was kyle pits that he could be a dynamic playmaker if you swap out julio jones for kyle pits good enough fence. No you're probably not at least not in. Kyle pits his rookie season. We're gonna talk more about him here in just a second. But losing mac. And exchanging neil allen for harris harmon and. Miro doesn't really make falcons a contender here. I mean that is. That's not an upgrade. For for the atlanta falcons and mingo and copeland are unlikely to make the pass rush what it was. I mean those two guys have combined for four sacks the last two seasons so this is not an atlanta falcons team that is swimming in talent right now now now. Here's what they do have going for them. They still do. Have matt ryan now. Matt ryan has had some success against the eagles. he's also had some struggles against the eagles but remember in the last game in atlanta when they when atlanta came back and that was the game where nelson agholor dropped the long the long pass from carson wentz. They should've had touchdown in the eagles should. In carson wentz led the eagles on a touchdown drive to take the lead within a little over two minutes left and then the defense on fourth and one gave up a long. Julio jones touchdown that essentially cost that cost eagles game and they they lost a couple of players in the pregame. Warmups zinc to sean and alshon and dallas goedert. Were all lost due to injury. I'll in leading up to that in in the moments before the game started. So you know. The the falcons and eagles have a long history playing each other in some pretty interesting spots. You had atlanta come to philadelphia in two thousand seventeen in the playoffs and lose that heartbreaker and then they played opening week and twenty. I believe it was twenty eighteen right and the eagles managed to another battle manage to basically almost a carbon copy of the of the game in the playoffs. The season before. Jim schwartz usually did a pretty good job against the atlanta defense against the atlanta. Offense he he usually had his defenses ready to contain. Julio jones and matt ryan but not so during the twenty nineteen season when when atlanta managed that late game comeback in atlanta and the eagles have historically not played very well in atlanta in fact the eagles have not won a game in atlanta since two thousand nine. They've lost their last three games on the road. Against the falcons. They lost in twenty eleven. Thirty one thirty five to thirty one They of course lost in two thousand fifteen twenty six to twenty four and then twenty thousand nineteen again we've talked about. They lost twenty four to twenty. They have beaten. The atlanta falcons three times in a row at home so going to atlanta over the last few years last time they won in two thousand nine when they beat the falcons thirty four to seven. So we'd has historically been a tough place for the eagles to win. And that's a tough task coming in. Even though the falcons release aren't a very good team. That's kind of tough for eagles team. That also really isn't very good. And matt ryan can still play a little bit guy. He can still sling the rock around last year in his age. Thirty five season. Put up some pretty impressive numbers started. All sixteen games had more completions and more passing attempts than any other quarterback in the nfl. Four hundred seven the second straight year by the way he led the nfl incompletions. Four hundred seven completions for matt ryan last year completed sixty five percent of his passes through for four thousand five hundred. Eighty one yards twenty six touchdowns. Just eleven interceptions he. He was extremely consistent. Did not have. Julio jones for a few games last year and so had a qb reading of ninety three point three which was better than the year before we needed ninety two point one.
