"I just dressed the process gold kind of the same. A lot of people know that gould is valuable and that many people advocate for gold as an investment. But what does that actually look like. How do you invest in gold. Where do you even get gold money. Rehabbing ethan wants to know if an investment in gold is a golden idea. Here he is nicole. My name is ethan and i live in chicago. I was listening to your upset with guy adama and was really interested in your conversation about gold. I've seen online. That a public opinion is kind of split Some people are super into gold. An investment in some seem to think it's kind of dumb what do you think. And also if it is a good idea. Where do you get gold. yes ethan. I totally see the same split public opinion online. It's hard to know who to believe. Some people tote gold as the be all and all of investments while other say investing in gold is just a scam. you see on late night commercials. So let's settle this once and for all in the finance world. Gold fall into a category of investments called commodities in general commodities are divided into two categories. Hard and soft soft commodities are things that grow like corn cattle or meet sugar cotton and coffee hard commodities are things that are drilled or mind like crude oil natural gas aluminum silver and yes gold for the folks outside of the financial industry. The most common commodity to get involved with is gold. Gold doesn't offer income or dividends like stocks. But it's considered a safety or safe haven that although the price itself isn't guaranteed to be stable people think that if paper money fails then gold can save the day. i mean. that's a little bit of a zombie apocalypse scenario. But it's true. The other reason many investors have a little bit of gold in their portfolios is as a protection against inflation as we talked about with james alter inflation is the condition where the cost goods is more expensive than it used to be. It's why movie tickets were five bucks in the good old days and now they're fifteen. Historically gold has been a good hedge against inflation of the us dollar. If you're sold on gold there are a few different ways to invest and that is pretty much true of all commodity investments the simplest and also hardest way is buying the actual commodity because that means having gold bars or coins or bushels of corn lying around your place that never seemed ideal to me especially when i was storing my sweaters in the oven for lack of space in my apartment the next simplest way is to go with a public company that produces a commodity like rio tinto group for minerals or archer daniels midland which produces wheat corn cocoa and other agricultural commodities. Or if you don't wanna put all of your eggs in one basket you could buy a commodity exchange traded fund or etf. We'll get more into this in other episodes but etf's are slightly similar to index funds in that you're not buying stock in one company commodity. Etf's would have a smattering of commodity producing companies in the fund. For today's tip. You can take straight to the bank. Historically inflation has increased and. I think it's reasonable to assume it will continue to do so. So i'd recommend that in your portfolio do include some hedge against inflation. I'd keep in mind. That gold is even wheeling common hedge. But it's not the only option. There are plenty of others like treasury inflation protected. Securities tips or crypto. So if you can't get those late night gold infomercials out of their head. Keep listening to money rehab to learn about other hedges against inflation money. "I was really excited about this because I just want to talk to a professor. I WanNa talk to historian, someone who lives and breathes and understands and studies teaches it in school, and I really was just excited to be is never. Did we got to talk with Dr Khalil Muhammad? He's professor. History race in public policy at Harvard. Kennedy School is author. He wrote the condemnation of blackness race crime in the making of modern urban America. You know it was we went to school. You know went to school I I went from Boulder two years in Boulder to Harvard Yeah. I think. I even say that in the episode. A far cry from Harvard Yeah. I didn't even go to college. But you know what look we're learning as we go. Honestly, this was one of those moments where when we were done with this I kind of got off of the of the call and I was like you know. Why am I never learned this? It does make you kind of realize there's just a lot that we don't know. There's a lot that we're not taught in school and and I really appreciated him. Taking the time to discuss matters of race in America and well, we talked about systemic racism. Really you know not just the Buzzword of systemic. Down what that means of immigration in America means. Slavery how it went policing began how literature in statistics were used to sort of push this narrative. It was a lesson. It was a lesson where we got to be one on one with a Harvard professor. And pick his brain and it made me want to read more it also. It also made me want to go to Harvard South. And I want to go to Harvard I. Just WanNa take his class zoom. US just just me, that's it. Anyway here after Khalil Mohammed. You're a professor at.

"Today we like to leave you with some thoughts from a few of our recent guest we've been asking people to tell us what to watch or read to help us understand this moment in American life here's some of what they told us I'm Keisha Blain and associate professor of history at the university of Pittsburgh and I would recommend Khalil Muhammad's the condemnation of blackness race crime and the making of modern urban America this book will help readers understand how the idea of black criminality came to develop in the United States they will provide a broad overview of not just a policing in the US but also how the ideas of race and crime intersex Wallace Jefferson on the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas I hope that people will take the opportunity to go see come from away it is a Broadway play about nine eleven and when all the planes were diverted many of them arrived in the small town of Gander Newfoundland and it is an inspiring story of how people of very diverse backgrounds and political orientations and gender orientations and races work together as a community to embrace the freedoms that our nation and the world endeavor for it is inspiring and it tells me that in times of great distress it is not impossible in fact people are hungering for the ability to work together toward a greater good that was Wallace Jefferson and Keesha Blaine if you missed our conversations with them you can go back and listen at NPR dot org to.

Yeah, but it was it was sort of, like, I think I was maybe the seventh right of color that they had ever hired in Haiti, seventy years. Right. So one of the great things that happened with David remnant was that I would. There was the mazing voice. I'm sorry. His name is escaping me. Now David would go and see anybody who was recommended. So was that a similar thing for you? Yeah. And so for Khalil Muhammad who is a dear friend of mine, and we went to shamburg shamburg right now. He's at Harvard. He was a director of the Schanberg center in Harlem, and he's a dear friend of mine. We went to graduate school together. We almost got arrested together, which was like the way I became friends, very crazy, like brief aside. First year graduate, I master Khalil gets a parking ticket actually driving for some ridiculous little his frame. His university of Pennsylvania alumni frame, blocking obscuring his life. Playing whatever so give them a ticket for this. And I want to go down to the peace and talk to them about this. You wanna come and play. Sure. And like a fool because I don't know Khalil and we get to the precinct, and, you know, he's like I'd like to talk to, like wherever's in charge, and Khalil is like this tall and I'm like this tall. And so I'm like, okay, we get there. And he says, you got this ticket and I wanted to find out why got it was like, well because you have this license plate. And he's saying that y and the officers white guy, who's like, I don't know. Maybe in this forty like, yeah, that's why he said, because my estimation is because they are racist cops in this in this area. And they pulled me over, because I'm a black man driving my car. Right. Was like that silent. My first thought was like we in the precinct and I did not tell anybody I was coming here. Nobody knows we're here the way you are. I am. Lil is like just dressing these people down. I'm looking around like, man, next time, you, do you give me a heads up. So anyway, he and I have friends from that point on. Right. And so. He when he became director of the shamburg. And I have been trying. I've been writing largely like black outlets point almost twenty years. Aside from the Washington paper, that was the only non black outlet. I had written four probably in my life, and I was sitting across. I was coming to this event at the schamberg, and it was like a reception in so Khalil said, I'm going to sit you across from David rim. Knicks say something smart. And so I sat down and better conversation. But similarly, a similar story, which is that he said, you should write for us. You should write something like this guy is not serious. You know. And maybe a couple of weeks after that any Davidson sent me an Email like David said that you were interested in writing you should do something for us. And I said, okay. There was this little story out of Florida about this young man, who had been killed and have been no arrests made. And I was like I just did a basic why you should know why you should care about this why the stories important thing and the young man was named Trayvon Martin. And then the tax opened up because Amy said, you should follow the story and follow that story and then Ferguson happened, and then Baltimore with Freddie gray happened, and then Charleston happened, and then there was all of these stories that were landing on my death. And I felt a kind of obligation to write about them because I put them in a historical context, and I could say this is not a novel development. This is not something that is just a quirk of the system that these people have found themselves receiving end of boot -ality from largely white officers charged with enforcing the law. It's one of the things that you write about in your book, that saying that the history of black, oppression is not separate from police brutality. Depression and. One of the things that I really wanted to talk to you about tonight, was the fact that when I read you on these subjects. I'm learning something about my own history that I didn't and that not only makes it resonate. But also allows me to have the information to talk to somebody else. So thank you. When these stories started coming up you were also thinking a lot about Barat during those years married. The worst thing that right? Is hate in their own words. But Mary something you wrote. Sure. Okay. This is from Gilani's book, the substance of hope. All his Gilani writes, all his accomplishments, Barack Obama's ultimate significance, maybe less as a president than as a harbinger of what comes after his presidency. I know. Even as he campaigns for the highest office in the land, and Abam generation was taking shape. You can't you can't. And you're part of.
