"Perceived access to liquidity. And we think liquidity is still really good. It was just the speed at which the friendly fire unfolded at Silicon Valley was just too quick to handle and too much to handle. And of course it spread, as we all know, to signature. Slip on a banana peel really sticks out because I really implied just sort of like, you know, just a minor fall. He has a scrape or something. He hurt your knee, your bottom. I have to ask you, did you cover Silicon Valley bank shares and what was your rating on it? So my colleague Tim Coffey had a great and neutral last week. So that was not an issue for us. I think what transpired was just a very quick recognition that the company needed to position and raise capital. Whether they were told that by the regulators or whether they were getting ahead of the grading agencies, I'm not sure we'll ever know, but it unfolded very quickly. And I think the investment community just didn't buy their explanation. And I think that was one of the problems last Wednesday and Thursday that led to the demise of the company. Of course, thanks. Great to have you with us. Chris. See you soon. Thanks. Have a great night. Bonnie and would you be inclined to take a flyer? Yeah, I like key and I like 5th third, 5th third is kind of like a super regional. I don't think it has the same, none of them have the risk of contagion. I mean, this is overblown, but I don't think from our operational standpoint, it has that risk. And then key bank, which is very large in the real estate lending, you have hard assets that you know are marked to a certain loan to value. I think it's something that's talented. I think those two banks kind of stick out to me in terms of being operationally intact. All right, coming up a BioTech by Pfizer scooping

Crypto Is in Its 'Then They Fight You' Phase

"Is a famous if apocryphal phrase. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you. Then they fight you and then you win. If you've been paying attention to crypto over the last few weeks, particularly the signals being sent to the industry from regulators. You may have gotten the distinct idea that we've entered into the then they fight you stage. On Tuesday, February 7th castle island ventures Nick Carter tweeted, I don't want to alarm, but since the turn of the year, a new operation choke point type operation began targeting the crypto space in the U.S.. It is a well coordinated effort to marginalize the industry and cut off its connectivity to the banking system, and it's working. Then last night, Wednesday, February 8th, coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong lit the industry up with his tweet accusing the SEC of trying to get rid of retail staking in the U.S.. All in all, I think this is a moment that really demands more context. So what we're going to do today, and I think this is going to end up being a two parter, is go through some key events organizations and personalities to try to better bring you up to speed on why it feels like there is a slow, bureaucrat driven squeeze on the American crypto industry. Specifically, we're going to dig into the recent history of a key bank regulator in the United States. The office of the comptroller of the currency. In order to understand why one, the fear of banks is a vehicle for crypto contagion to spread to the traditional system is rising and consequently to why cutting off access to banks is becoming one of crypto opponents key tools. And here before we get into the recent history, let's start with the quick 2023 timeline of the squeeze. It's important to note that the specific vector for this attack that's emerging is the U.S. banking system. Since the beginning of the year there has been an arming escalation in actions taken against banks that work with crypto industry firms. On January 3rd, the fed, the FDIC, and the OCC released a joint statement on the risks to banks who engage with the industry. While it didn't explicitly ban banks from touching crypto, it's strongly discouraged them from doing so, citing quote safety and soundness concerns.

"Of thinking. Unfortunately, Americans have experienced and so to then you have people who don't know what to believe. Because they're being told opposite things by two different sides. And so that's why I encourage people to figure out things for themselves. You know, I want to talk about something else. It's related to your book, and that's the importance of your book, which I have sitting right here next to me. In books, it's important for children to be able to see themselves. When they open a book or go to or go to a movie, it's important for actually all of us, not just children, to see ourselves in the Atlantic, you recently you recently wrote that like books, dolls, too, can be great teaching tools, tools, talk more about that. Well, I mean, let's say, for instance, if you are a parent of a white child and that white child primarily goes to a predominantly white school. And let's say you want to start talking to that child about race. Let's say you want to make sure that child does not connect. Let's say dark skin color with things that are bad and light skin color with things that are good that kids buy elementary school if not preschool are already unfortunately doing. How can you do that as a parent? How can you go about teaching the child? You see these different skin colors? Though they look differently, they're both part of the same human rainbow. They're both equal. How can you do that? Or what can you use to do that? This podcast is supported by Kane brothers, a division of key bank capital markets. Listen to House calls for insightful conversations with some of the industry's leading investment bankers about trends across the healthcare industry. Kane brothers House calls is the place to hear about developments, innovators, opportunities, and challenges across the healthcare economy. Find us at key dot com slash Kane brothers or on your favorite podcast app. You know, you make a fascinating argument in that Atlantic piece. You say we can follow the history of school segregation through the evolution of American toys, connect those dots. Yes. I mean, I think that recently, for instance, when I say recently over the last few decades, there has been an effort to diversify American toys to ensure that toys are reflective of all the different people from different skin colors and religions and body sizes, but by the 19 50s, in particular, when there was an effort and people believed that assimilation was going to bring about racial progress and what I mean, Jonathan by assimilation, the efforts of all peoples of color to be white and look white, what actually happened at that point is there was an effort to essentially make all the toys look like white people. Before that, there were more effort there were more different looking toys, but they were those toys were carrying racist stereotypes, particularly in the 1890s when you started to have this mass manufacturing of toys, so you had toys that depicted Chinese people in a stereotypical way and black people and Irish people. And so I think in many ways we can understand the way people are thinking about race by how toys are being created and marketed. You know, you cite two studies prominently in your article. And I'm sure people listening to this conversation, their mind immediately goes to one that's really famous. The first being the Clark's survey in 1940, and then Margaret Beale Spencer's survey in 2010. What were their findings? Talk about those two studies. Sure. So in both studies, you had psychologists and social scientists who brought children together in the Clarks study in 1940. It was just black children. In the study more recently, the social scientists brought both white and black children and they put dolls before them. A doll that depicted somebody as black, a dog that looked white and just asked faith those children. Those young children basic questions, which dolls do you prefer? Which doll is nice? And what they found in both cases is that children, both black, black children in 1940s and black and white children recently preferred the white doll, consider that the nice doll, consider that the better doll, and Anne recently, the researcher found that white children were even more likely to have

"97 7 your information station. From ABC News, I'm chuck severson, breaking news, two people are on the run after ten people were killed and 15 others were injured and stabbings at 13 different locations in just the past hours in Saskatchewan, Canada. We are still looking for the two suspects. We are asking residents across Saskatchewan and our neighboring provinces to be vigilant. They are considered armed and dangerous as officer Ronda blackmore, Royal Canadian mounted police. It appears that some of the victims may have been targeted and some may be random. "Strikes by the RMT and two other unions in the coming weeks. Caroline Anita booked my cup home. Yes, absolutely. It's going to be a difficult day on the road here in London. All right, let's also return though to a couple of extra breaking news lines that we've had out of Deutsche Bank this morning. They're cutting their full year investment bank revenue goal, which I think is pretty important, as well as that fixed income commodity sales trading revenue beat that we mentioned earlier. They're also raising their cost income ratio target because of cost pressures and you had Credit Suisse starting this major strategic review under a new CEO confirmed that got seen is out and we have a new CEO at Credit Suisse. So they also reported a wider than expected loss on litigation. So those really other key bank earnings this morning. Let's get more on the markets more broadly and bring in Bloomberg's cross asset editor, Joanna Austen, Joanna, great to have you with us. Almost forgetting that it's a fed day to day too, but let's talk about tech earnings, first of all. They have helped to alleviate some of the wider market worries it would seem. Exactly. So one investor described them as a sigh of relief. And the reports from Microsoft and alphabet and even Texas Instruments. So underlying resilience is maybe not outright strength in some of the industry's main colors. You have digital advertising, cloud computing, info tech spending and shift. It wasn't all rosy because the strong dollar and economic uncertainty are still issues, but investors were generally cheered by the report. And John, if we see a 75 basis point hike out of the fed, that had cement a 150 basis points over June and July it would be the steepest rate rises since Paul Volcker in the 1980s is that exactly what we're going to get today. It does seem like it markets are pretty much pricing that. That would bring the target rate to two 25 to 2.5. And then swap their pricing in half a point increase in September and for rates to peak a bit higher in December. And that would be around 3.4%. That's the pricing in any way, then followed by cuts in 2023. And you figure strengthen the labor market can give the federally way to do some of this. But there is increasing speculation that it could cause a recession with just the steepness of the heist. Yeah, absolutely. So we'll watch that FOMC decision 7 p.m. London time this evening, Joanna, thank you so much for being with us. "Bank credit cards and debit card customers in the U.S., but not international figures according to the report. And that shows Syria's buying over the holidays. Apple CFO, Luca maestri sent strong expectations for the holiday quarter on the last earnings call. He said the company expected every category except for iPad to beat revenue for the same quarter a year earlier. And yet, benzinga says the streets expecting a below typical seasonal growth quarter to the tough compares with the holiday quarter of 2020. Checking transaction statements, miss bulls siding with Maya S three. Looking at the KM FDM or I'm sorry, the KLF. Anyway, the info that he's seen indicates an 18% sequential growth in the fourth quarter, stronger than the previous three year average of 13%, according to the report. For the quarter wrote the analyst, the data tells us we should expect slightly better than historical growth for hardware in the upcoming quarter and it's not just about how Apple did this bill C is the anticipated holiday numbers as a good sign for things to come. The analyst says the sales have led to increased confidence that despite supply constraints, apple's U.S. hardware growth should remain strong. Key bank has an overweight rating on Apple shares, the firm's price target on the shares is $191. An apple analyst of note raised his price target on apple shares on Tuesday, not sure why he's not playing a list of note at this point. His targets have been trailing apple's share price per year and they pretty much still do. I am referring, of course, to Bernstein research analyst Tony sagana. The fly ran the shortest of blurbs on sack and augie's move. Quoting half of it, the analyst believes Apple benefited significantly from the pandemic and sees risk of more muted earnings growth over the next few years. He missed the pandemic growth as it was coming for what it's worth. Whatever. He's holding his market perform rating on Apple shares. He did up his price target, though, it was $132. It is now 170 Apple shares closed Tuesday at $175 and change. Foxconn's problem iPhone factory in India is said to open up again. You remember the one scene of some serious food poisoning, which led the hospitalizations, which led to protests, which led to arrests, all of which led to Apple investigating the factory, which led to the company finding overcrowded living quarters, toilets with no running water and, according to one village level administrator, no safeguards to prevent COVID-19 infections, all of which led to Apple putting the plant on probation. An apple spokesperson said at the time that the company was working with the supplier to ensure a comprehensive set of corrective actions or rapidly implemented and rapidly was apparently the key word. Well, a key word. Hopefully corrective was the key word. Fingers crossed, 9 to 5 max I Reuters report that says, after two weeks dark, the Foxconn facility is firing up again today. Not that everything is hunky Dory. The plan is still on probation as far as Apple is concerned. The Reuters reports as reopening will go slow with no more than a hundred folks back in action, full tilt, the plan employees about 17,000 people. The piece as Apple saying in a statement that workers will start to return gradually as soon as Apple is certain at standards are being met in every dormitory and dining area, hence the hundred people to start back. Someone said to know something about something tells Reuters, it could take the plan more than two months to resume full production. For its part, Foxconn is quoted in the piece, saying we have implemented a range of corrective actions to ensure this can not happen again in a rigorous monitoring system to ensure workers can raise any concerns they may have, including anonymously. "Good morning from London and Caroline hedge go warm welcome to Bloomberg daybreak Europe where we're going to talk about the fed pivot what to expect from this crucial end of year meeting from Jerome Powell and co Boris Johnson's leadership threatened for the first time since his landslide election victory two years ago All of this over the COVID restrictions and sign of vac the vaccine may not protect against omega and that really is what everybody wants to understand It's a small study but we'll unpack it for you in just a moment Breaking on the Bloomberg terminal though after the U.S. CPI and PPI data we get UK consumer prices this morning for November a rise of 5.1% year on year That is above the estimated 4.8% retail prices in the UK for November rise a staggering 7.1% year on year Again beating the estimated 6.7 So there you have it Red hot inflation in the UK the Bank of England meeting is tomorrow How are they going to factor that in The threat of omic one is meant that the idea of raising rates tomorrow has been pushed to the back and most traders have been looking out for February but do these retail numbers CPI figures change that Also based on the Bloomberg terminal results from H and M fourth quarter sales committed 56.81 billion Swedish krona just below the estimated 57.08 billion Sales in local currency were back at the same level as in the fourth quarter of 2019 So interesting from H and M we have also had results out for the third quarter from inditex this morning Okay let's give you a brief market check then right now Some more details on where we stand in terms of the bond markets ahead of the meeting So one spot four two 8 is where we stand for U.S. benchmark years on the ten year so dropping a couple of basis points Futures for the European and U.S. markets have just ticked into the red U.S. stock 50 features down a tenth of 1% We have had a lot of volatility and the fallout has been seen really in the NASDAQ yesterday which plunge some 2% at its lowest point in today came back in the last hour but still fell about 1% So its valuations and its concerns about the quicker taper in the U.S. and what that means for those big tech winners Asian stocks have been fairly mixed after weakening economic data CSI 300 down by 9 tenths of 1% the MSCI Asia Pacific index dropping two tenths of 1% the topics in the nikkei are the only markets in HIC that are currently in the green Also oil this morning below $70 about for WTI crude futures Let's take you to our markets live editor Heather Burke now who joins me to unpack a bit first of all on the UK data The CPI figure pretty interesting and even hotter than many had expected Heather Yeah that CPI figure really jumped out at me The 5.1 year over year compared to the estimate 4.8 and that really illustrates just how hot inflation is going in the UK puts the pressure on the BOE A lot of concerns but markets are pretty convinced they're not going to hide tomorrow Omni Kron concerns outweighing the labor market data and the inflation Yes absolutely But then of course markets are mainly focused on what drone Powell will do What signals will we get How much optionality will the fed try to keep I mean it seems like with the fed everything is to play for Markets really took a turn when they started when he started taking this kind of hawkish pivot saying inflation is not transitory anymore Markets are pretty steady right now The biggest thing that I'm going to be watching is how tech stocks do A very hawkish fed really could send text down even into more of a downfall Especially if there's more concerns that supply chain inflation is going to get worse next year Valuations are really really frothy right now And the biggest thing that I'm going to be looking for is this fed meeting and going into 2021 when we see tapering and even possibly rate hikes is that going to turn into a stock taper instead of the bond paper that we saw in the last hiking cycle I like that phrase very interesting thought Heather thanks so much for being with me That is Heather burtt's our market comedy and analysis check out markets live ML IV on your Bloomberg terminal so it does the fed take a step towards the first interest rate rises in the U.S. since 2018 we're watching out for that today Let's go to our top stories now And I want to start in the UK where Boris Johnson suffered his biggest parliamentary rebellion as becoming leader last night almost a hundred conservatives opposed his plan to mandate the use of so called COVID passes at nightclubs in other venues in England Now Mark Harper is one of those who voted against the government It wasn't just about vaccine passports It was about some messages about how we think the.

"That they're trying to exact establishment zone coverage. And why is that? Because that it wasn't something they did they never read quarters ever hardly ran three D coverage under Even though they they actually I actually thought it either last year, the year before I was like man, Michigan is going to have some three more three D concepts in their deepest because John Brown had clinic. With the 49 ers and the 40 Niners are are based. Three D defense Base cover three defense is what is already skated on. So I'm thinking like, man, that's what they're going to do now. Brazil did they waste their time. Understand? What is what did he do it? Right. So you come out here last week, though, and you see the kitchen sink, You see, quarter quarter Have you see covered? Three You see, covered, too. I mean, you see great disguises pre snap. Uh, being a staple. They were a man coverage team as a staple and a cover two defense as a one off Now you're multi. You're truly multiple in your coverage concepts, and that's not going to be an overnight process when it comes to proficiency. But those that haven't heard there was a football game early today. "Saharan Africa analyst at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Now, global food prices have risen at their fastest monthly rate in more than a decade, according to a new warning from the United Nations for the world as a whole price inflation for food was just over 6% in 2020, but the increases haven't been even in South America. It was over 20% in Africa and South Asia, 12% and in some countries Lebanon, Syria and Sudan food price inflation Is currently running at 200%. So why is this happening now? Adam Two's is Professor of history at Columbia University in New York. I think there's a combination of factors. There's the general recovery of the world economy, which is good news. There are supply interruptions. There's been some really bad harvests in major producers like Brazil, for instance, as a result of drought there And then there's big buyers in the market. There's still a lot of interest in biofuels, so a lot of Agra comical outputs being hoovered up for that, and China is really in the market right now buying for stocks. So those factors together drive the prices up for affluent countries. This is really just a drop in the bowel. But if you're food importing low income country then this is really seriously bad news. In what way? What does it mean for people living in those countries? If you look at a country like Nigeria, I saw You've got food price inflation running at over 20%. Nigeria is the country in sub Saharan Africa. We should all have our eyes on right. It's a population giant. It's the country with the largest number of poor people in the world. Absolutely poor people. That basically means that people are not going to be able to feed their families. Or they will migrate down the food chain and buy cheap carbs cheap sugar rather than more nutritious food in Nigeria. It's not going to turn into an immediate famine condition, but it's just a progressive and Miz aeration. Of those at the bottom of the food chain, and on the other hand in a lot of Western countries, we kind of get concerned of inflation goes above 2%. You're arguing that's not so much to worry about. In fact, if you scratch the central bankers right now, they will actually tell you they're quite relaxed about inflation. Because over the last 10 years, our problem has been that it's been running. Too low. But in rich countries, Of course, food is a relatively small part of the household budget completely different story in Sudan or Lebanon or Syria, where food is a huge part of people's budget, and it's a matter of just getting through the week. Is there anything that rich, powerful countries can do to address this imbalance? That means some countries are suffering far more than others. I don't think it's been high on the G seven agenda. The news There has all been about the big tax measures, which also, incidentally, tend to Benefit the rich countries more on food prices. I think there's two different types of problem. One is aged for those most desperately in need. Backing the world Food Program of the U N adequately has got to be a top priority. These are people who are literally starving. It should not be tolerable in a rich world that that agency is not funded to the max really, and the other thing that we need to be talking about, seriously our priorities with regard to energy transition. To the extent that we rely on easy fixes like bio fuels, the rich countries are going to be sucking Agricultural output out of the system, And that was Adam, two's professor of history at Columbia University in New York on that sharp rise in global for food prices. UK government under pressure for COVID-19 strategy

"Emergency covid downs across the north of England to put the division between Westminster and the rest made Steph into shot relief. Mass journalists voters across the North voicing their anger being dictated to as city leaders discovered happening towns through front pages, twitter blogs. According to Lisa Nanday, the government doesn't even know where weakness and a new report by End Child poverty was just came out says that even before the pandemic child poverty was rocketing in the north and Midlands eight of the ten. Hardest hit areas is England less the union fracturing. Alex Scotland Wales Northern Ireland each have their own approaches to covert the government is trying to centralize control of England even though English, cities and regions were desperate for the more path more local strategies has that approach failed? Is it going to have to be more more regional? I think I don't think it's a one ONS official question. For instance, when it comes to things like testing trays I, think to have a national overarching. Sort of strategy is a disaster because obviously local people will know how to do that better. But when it comes to for instance. You know. Contagion rules. I think collaboratively in simplicity of the message is so key to their success that having a sort of different set of rules complicated rules depending on one postcode or another I think that will fall down I. I can't see that looking. I'm Scott this perceived as doing much better than England, and Cave in Wales to the extent. Are. They really doing better. Do they just have? To they have better messaging that Nicholas Sturgeon is just somebody is more trustworthy Boris Johnson. Better messaging is part of doing better. Possibly one of the key banks. I had to look at a fairly comprehensive study by the Center for Constitutional Change that looked at the totality of what we loosely termed as the first wave and found a covert destroyed trajectories peaked sooner in both Scotland and Wales and came down foster. So one could say that national OAKTON, which came too late for England came even more disastrously nights from Scotland and Wales. But death rates were significantly above national average for England and consistently. Wales and Scotland so I, think yes they have objectively done better. I had Frank Cultural Boys on the Today program saying he actually missed springs national lockdown lockdown gold because the whole country was in the same boat. Matt downs are driven by local infection rates but they all currently in the north I'm is this crisis sort of making the relationship between national local government, the north and the south worse or at least more more strained yeah. Undoubtedly I mean he's also contains enormous opportunities in some ways for Metro Mas- in the North it's interesting that you've seen. You've seen the London Meh. Saudi con his authority has really diminished because he's been basically take files funding in which he greatly depends is being held. So tightly in could be manipulated so much by central government that he doesn't have as much leeway as he used to. Conversely in the north, they know that they can They can basically demand certain things in exchange for cooperation about Kobe measures. So this puts the whole metro messing I mean previously, they were seen as you know, a Nice Democrat Nice Democratic Nice to have but not something that had genuine power, and now of course, because of covid they do it's also worth. Mentioning that Johnson himself has no real idea think of how to hold north-and-south together. If you read his conference speech last week, the only mention of the North was north London in the context of a cultural jibe, the only mention of Scotland and Wales where in the context of wind, power. he really doesn't think about this stuff any session he hasn't given any attention to how to negotiate this new difficult and fragile relationship a rope, the prominence of some of these regional mez Andy Burnham Steve. Rotherham. that. Make the case for a larger. Merrill based system in this country when you labor introduced mayors lately took on in some places and then and then Nelson others. But you think they'll be more appetite for these figures. I mean it's it's it's hard to say because there wasn't a great dealer appetite for them when they were introduced I suspect because of their dynamics that was thought to see here the sort of purchase pull dynamics with the man's the big regional setting themselves up as defenders of particular cities or city regions against the hostile government. That's a great dynamic building, your legitimacy with voices building a profile, and it may well be the other places. Look at this and think well, I'd rather like to have an undefined and in my case, my sanity or Steve Rotherham because at the Reimann way rose again knocks I've by government, but there's no one in our corner as I think he could. Well. Stimulate that kind of demand the difficulty is no everywhere has like an obvious relation sensitive build a city region around. So I wonder what will happen for the places you know those rather I was towns That was so crucial in the twenty nine election How would this kind of system worked for them?
