"More year in these a U F A. He's not coming back, right? So They're really in terms of contract, And as I said, who's due for a big deal Down the road, Darlene? Maybe Yokohama. You No forwards. You know there's really no but you're gonna have to wear all of sin at some point there. Really? I don't think that contract will be an albatross because the bigger contracts that are on the books or would be on the books. I think two of them are coming off, right, So I think there's A great deal of flexibility. Even if Seattle doesn't take Skinner There's a great deal of flexibility. You know, what are the Sabres doing? Go Leo do they then sink big money into a goalie into a free agent goalie, whether it's all mark across the market and get a guy, But I'm saying I mean, he's got flexibility. Even Skinner's contract That does not preclude Kevyn Adams from doing any making any menus you've managed to make. No, that's right. You can go sign Gabriel Landeskog. It's not going to happen, of course, but my point is, they are in a position where the Skinner contract doesn't Preclude them from doing other things. Certainly I just think at the end of the day when you're when you look at value and just sort of look like a return on investment, it's that's That's part of the reason why the contract at this point hurts right is because Skinner's clearly not scoring at the same clip that he was, you know, in his contract year scores 40 goals, and I didn't think he would do that. I mean, he never did that in his career, but Skinner Even as he's as he's getting older, Nate, I mean, he should still at least be a guy you can count on for 20 goals. That's I mean, that's and that's what he has been in his career. 2025 goals, I think is not a lot to ask. And and all of a sudden he's got 21 goals will last two seasons. Granted, not full seasons, but 21 goals over. I don't know. 100 something games. Yeah, it was. Listen. I mean, he had a disappointing season last year. It disappointing, you know, short bubble season as well. I mean, he just Well before the bubble I should say, um, yeah, I don't know. I I There's a lot probably to talk about with Skinner on how this team figures. I think the first thing is if he's here Yeah. You just like Put them with good players Roll right. What's Granada going to do with him? Like stop making him a defensive player? He's not. He's not Listen. I mean, at the at the rate you're paying him. If your plan is to put them on a third or fourth line, checking role, then, like, just beg somebody to take him then and then, like trade, a second round, pick or trade, something to Seattle. And just get them off the books. If that's your plan with Skinner find a way to just get out from underneath it. That's what I was wondering if it's now that Skinner is going to be unprotected. Is it possible? Kevin Adams talks to Ron Francis and says, Okay, we'll make a little side deal. What do you want to take Skinner in the draft. And you give up. I don't know. Do you give up another pick somewhere, prosper them to make sure that again. You're not worried about a forward they would take unless they're going to be like, really enamored with wanting to keep Zemgus Girgensons say, um, you know, And then you'd also alleviate if you're if you're if they're in Internally. If they're struggling with the risk the line and versus Borgen discussion. Then if you're Kevin Adams, I don't know you again. Do you offer up hick? Hey, take Skinner. What do you want to take Skinner. Here's this pick, and then the Sabres. It basically are keeping wrist alignment and bargain. You know, One guy will be exposed, but Seattle's taken Skinner for them. Yeah, I think Granado could still find a way to get some goal scoring out of Skinner he played. I think so, too. He among other players before going better under Granado, and his role will be different. He won't be buried on a line. That's the hope. I mean, he right now, if there's no Sam Reinhart, and there's no Jack Eichel on your on your team He's your best forward. Yeah. Yeah. Goalscoring. He's him and he's your best forward. He's your best forward. Yeah, but all the sun is more about power play goals as much as as opposed to five on five. I mean under Granado, I gotta double check and see what Skinner's ice time was under Kruger under Granado is a little bit over 15 minutes a game. I feel like there were nights with Kruger where Skinner was under 10 minutes of ice time. Yes, And that role would change. Of course I think with if he stays here and don Granado I mean being the head Cook again. It's the hope I get As as common sense, as you would think. The asking Skinner to wave is no movement Clause two for two to not protect him as much as in the same way. I was really unwilling to give them the benefit of doubt that they would make such a no brainer. Move. I'm also not going to just assume they're going to do the right thing with Skinner. I just I don't know how you can after watching last year, and I know Granada. Things did change under Granado. And, frankly, listen. I mean, this isn't just about the coach in his use. He didn't really earn a lot of ice time. He didn't really learn a lot earn a lot of like high scoring chance. Opportunities playing with Eichel when he was healthy in playing with I liked him when they flashed them with middle stand a little bit, You know, like, so there's I think there's opportunities to get him around some good young players. I wouldn't mind seeing you know a cousin Skinner. First line or something along those lines next year. If that's you know who you're throwing out there, so I don't know it's I'm not going to assume they're going to do those smart right thing with Jeff Skinner, if they do And they can set themselves up for him to have a bounce back season. I don't know what that looks like, And I guess I don't really know what a bounce back season looks like for Jeff Skinner short of just get us 25 2020 to 25 goals. Yep. When we get back. What I think is the key question the Sabres will be dealing with in the wrist. Aligning versus Borgen discussion again. Now that Skinner waves the no move. We really don't have to spend much time at all the talking about who they would protect among the forwards. It really comes down to the third guy. On the defenseman list. So we'll get into that.

Kevin Adams Jeff Skinner Sam Reinhart Kevyn Adams Ron Francis Jack Eichel 20 goals Darlene Zemgus Girgensons Granado Kruger Granada Gabriel Landeskog 21 goals 40 goals Borgen last year Nate next year two

"Want to get the chance to replay Craig Button from Howard and Jeremy yesterday morning as Craig Button TSN senior NHL draft analysts joined the show and had plenty to talk about with this upcoming draft class pertaining to own power Matthew Veneers, But he also talked about his past experiences as a general manager in the NHL when looking at a potential Jack Eichel trade for the Sabres this off season. Here is some of what Craig Button had to say. With Howard and Jeremy yesterday on Gr. We wanted to get John because I think you could appreciate the list of things to do facing Kevyn Adams. He already had, You know, Hire an assistant GM hire a head coach. Now he's got a little more heavy lifting to do. Well, you know, I I think the fact that he went through the process of interviewing a number of people for the head coaching job is really good, because it gives you some insights how people look at your team and how they look at how how to improve it, and You know for for Kevin, who you know, has never gone through that. I think that that becomes really helpful In many ways. Now, you know you're at that point of the season and Kevin and his group have had a lot of time to prepare. Just because the Stanley Cup final ended a couple nights ago doesn't mean he hasn't been prepared because he has, but you know, there's you know, the draft free agency. We all know about those things. But expansion also provides opportunity, and it's an opportunity that came along in 2017. And it's It's one that won't come along again now, so there's many different ways to approach of, uh, how you want to improve your team, What opportunities that exist to improve your team? And so now, Kevin has a has a wide canvas sort of speech. Well, let me start with the draft first, and then we'll get to the current roster. Who is the number one prospect in your opinion in this draft? It is own power. And, you know, I You know what? How would I love the under 18 Championship in Dallas? It's really part of me. And only power wasn't there. Matt had been ears wasn't there. William Acklin wasn't there. But It was determined by after watching all that group of players that that everybody had not had an opportunity to watch over the course of the year came clear to me that all power was the best player for me in my mind. Now he went to the world championships and was excellent. And you know, all you gotta do is just watch how coaches use them. Watch how coaches used players. I mean, he starts off drug land didn't really dull. At the end of it. He was clearly in the dark board offensive and playing lots his his brain power his skills and I call him the s player superior sense. You know, super lately like God Uh, size and the skills are real strong. So you put all that together and I usually need. Where do you find these guys? I don't know where you find these guys. I think he's I think he's the number one defensive and I think he's the type of defense and that can control the game. And you know when they come along, there's other good players. I'm not trying to, you know, say that does not. But I like clearly let me be clear here. I clearly see him as the best player. How close he had mentioned on a zoom call the other day, he was leaning to going back to the University of Michigan. So you know, next season might not even be a discussion. Discussion point for Sabre fans. How close do you think he is to being NHL ready? Well, I mean, no. So I'm going to use the kale. My car. Quinton views example. So they came into the league. They were NHL ready, ready to contribute. There's a big difference between putting on a jersey and and played in a lineup and contributed, so I I I call NH already being ready, Contribute. Sale and green views. You know, after the freshman year college, there's a lot of talk about them leading. They went back to school. And, you know people might have said, Well, why would you stay? They went back. They dominated. There were the Holy Baker winner. My car up runner up between Houston They come into the NHL ready to contribute to their team. They were runners. They were one and two in the rookie of the year that year, so An old power play in the legal next year. Yeah, do I think he would benefit from another year at the University of Michigan? Absolutely. And with that, I think he comes in to do what Kalma car and continues did after spending that sophomore season and call and talking Okay, so having said that, let me just for purposes of discussion. Craig, You're Kevin Adams. You mentioned you believe the number One prospect is clearly own power. If you are Kevin Adams, and you were Talking to your scouts. Is there anybody or who else would you even bring up in terms of a discussion as possible options in that top spot? Well, I mean, I think you can go one of two places. I think he can go for me. Brad Clark is a right shot defenseman that can do so many things in the game. He's so smart. He's imaginative. He's creative and You start to think about Rasmus Darling, you know the left shot defenseman. Then he start to think about Bryant Clark. And I think the Brandt has has a style of game. Now listen, I mean, I'm going to compare them to to North Trophy winners, but it's the style that I'm comparing to. And that's Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. He plays with that type of boldness and You know what? I think that he fetching her, But you know for me, Matty veneers. If you want to sentiment, he becomes the next guy. William Macklin is a good player, but I like Maddie veneers better. So I mean, but that's where I That's where my head takes me. In terms of the two players after own power, why do you like veneers better than Echlin? Because I think veneers has a has a Bo Horvat Jonathan Tae style game. I think act like is really skilled. But I don't think he can impact the game in as many areas as bad. Even here, skin.

Erik Karlsson Matthew Veneers Kevin Adams William Acklin Kevyn Adams Howard Brent Burns Bryant Clark Jeremy William Macklin Brad Clark 2017 Jack Eichel Kevin Rasmus Darling Craig Button yesterday morning yesterday John Craig

"The media for the first time after becoming the 20th head coach and Sabres franchise history earlier this week, and he talked about how excited he is for the opportunity that the team has to grow. We have so much room for growth that is powerful when you look at what we have and what we have coming what we have in our system already, whether it's in Rochester or elsewhere in the form of draft picks, and certainly the players that we saw young guys that were empowered and took advantage of it last season, so that challenge is really, really exciting to me. I know we can do it. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams also spoke with the media yesterday, and he offered an update on the team's medical dispute with Jack Eichel. He said the Sabres haven't budged as I've said many times before. I'm certainly not a doctor. You know our stance hasn't changed and where we're at, and it's in the hands of the medical experts. That's what I said previously, and it's where we're at right now. So that's the best I can give. You understand the question that you need to answer the question, but that's where we're at. "That is Sabres General manager Kevyn Adams speaking about the draft class. And yesterday. The question I believe was was asked in the way of, you know, you know, I think it was Mookie Hawkins, who asked this question. And he asked, you know about Oh, and power, Just like you know. How do you feel about him? And, you know, is he going to pretty much be the next you know Josh Allen of this draft or something like that. And Kevin Adams had that response. He didn't necessarily mentioned Oh, and power and Listening to it again, You know, um, certainly it It leaves a little doubt in your mind as to if the savers are actually going to draft him. I mean, yes, I get it. The Sabres have been busy with the the coaching search and coach watch and figuring out what they're going to do. And they hired Don Granato. And yesterday A story comes out from Mike Morey Allen NHL dot com. Talking with Own power. Little bit of his future and whether he's going to make the jump to the NHL or go back to Michigan and play another year with the Wolverines, which I think is absolutely fine. Power can do that veneers can do that. Ken Johnson. Obviously he should do that. But Looking at the top of the draft, and we just talked with Will Scotch Great job with the scouting report on YouTube, and, uh, he's at Scow Ching on Twitter. He does a great job breaking down these these prospects and putting them in their own tears and rankings and He definitely said something that I would agree with. I would agree with the fact that I'm not necessarily so sold on Owen Power. Yes, I think Owen power had a good World Championship, and I think that at times he really he really did flashes potential at the car at the collegiate level, but There are certain things about Owen Powers game that Still needs some work. And you know another year college could potentially help with that. But Will scour each pretty much put it as you know, it took him time to adjust it with certain things. And there were certain aspects of his game that necessarily didn't come about, you know. Right away or didn't come about at all during the season, so We will have to see. But I'm looking at this year's draft that I'm looking at the top of the draft, and I really do like Matthew Veneers. I really like Matthew B. Ba nears a lot and if you if you missed it, and it's been a while since I I wrote these prospects Profiles, but I did write about Owen Power and I did write about Matthew veneers on our website. W gr 5 50 dot com. And Looking at Both of their games. Matthew Veneers is Definitely a player that people no matter where he's going to get drafted. People are going to love Matthew Veneers. He is a 200 ft player. He goes 110% 100% of the time. And he he's just never going to give up on a play. That's exactly what people in buffalo are going to love about Matthew Veneers and with Owen Power, and this is a and I hate bringing this up. Because this has been brought up in the past and talked about here, especially in Buffalo. If you're drafting Owen Power for size in skating. Do not expect him to be Zidane. Oh, Ciara. Tyler Myers when people when we drafted him, and everybody was just like, Oh, he's got to become the Sedano Ciara, please. Zidane Oh, Ciara's. They do not grow on trees. They do not come every once in a while. They are once in a lifetime players and the way this game is going Players like Zidane, Achara. Yes, they're still going to be around, but they're not going to be many of them. And for people looking at Owen power and thinking that Oh, well, he's got the six ft six frame £215 yada yada. Well, if he adds another £20 and adds a little muscle and gets tough, He can be the city. No trial. No, We cannot expect that of these guys, especially in today's game. A lot of these type of defenseman are going to Make the they're going to develop into these very good skating defenseman with heads up all the time and making these really nice plays and Owen Power is one of those guys who probably has one of the who probably has arguably the best vision of especially the defenseman in this draft class. He skates really well, but if you watch him, his head is always up, and he's always looking around trying to make the best passes and trying to make the best players. He's got very good vision. Very good hockey sense. And, you know, there are reasons why he is projected to be where he is at number one just because of the potential that he has Especially if he goes back to college this year and really puts it all together and starts to dominate at the collegiate level that will make that pick even more of a Oh, yeah, for sure, That's why he was drafted number one. However. Like Will said there are certain things with his game that there are still plenty of question marks about And I personally really like Matthew veneers. And if I am the Sabres at number one, I'm probably taking Matthew veneers. But Then again. Like I brought up You look at his Potential projection and and, you know, looking ahead at what he could become if he becomes a really nice second pair defenseman, especially on the left side. And if you have Rasmus Dahlin here in Buffalo as the number one defenseman who you know he's shown over the past few years that he can have that potential to become That top number one defenseman for an organization and and be able to do all he can do. The Sabres have Darlene and power 12. That's a really, really nice 12 punch on your defensive group, and especially with Ryan Johnson coming in who could be the Third or second pair left handed defenseman on the on the right side. You've already got Henry. Okay? How are you? And you've also got Will Borgen, Who's there? And Oscar relaxing and is a really, really.

Josh Allen Tyler Myers Ken Johnson Mookie Hawkins Kevin Adams Don Granato Ryan Johnson Will Borgen Rasmus Dahlin Matthew B. Ba Zidane 110% Ciara Will Scotch Matthew Veneers £20 Kevyn Adams Henry Owen Power Matthew veneers

"Will forever be the guy that traded away in one of our best players in franchise history. They've got a lot of GMs that have traded away. Great players. You know, bottle trades away O Reilly, and he might not be one of the greats in franchise history. But you've got Dwight Hash chick You've got right. Darcy trades away. Brian Campbell. Darcy didn't write didn't resign. Briere nor Drury. You know, like you. You've got a lot of players in the history of the French. Michael Peca was traded, right? Mm hmm. It's a It's a thing. One thing that I would say and this is something I think to always look for what message stays despite people changing And that came out yesterday to which is something Ralph Krueger said. An awful lot that Adams said again yesterday so important that we have open communication we have. We have great communication. We don't have great communication here. He went on to talk about it again, which means I mean, I think it's a pretty safe bet that comes from ownership. Owners to the owners. Communication is a very important word. Yes, right. Very important word between the GM and the coach between those guys and ownership, the GM and the coach and the players, Right. Hey, Dan. Bosma. Go have a you know. Was it plasma who, Murray said needs to be in the locker room having a cup of coffee with the players every now and then. Yeah. I think that is a buzzword in the for the coach or how whatever it looks like they are. They want to be seen as an organization where everybody's on the same page and Lockstep or synergy or a lot of different ways to say it, But I mean Ralph when they would be losing four games in a row. You talk about how everybody's buying in the communication is tremendous. Okay, thanks. You know, okay. Yeah, well, the results weren't showing on the ice. So you can course doesn't miss the whole point You could buy in. You could like a guy. I mean, it sounds like a number of the guys liked Ralph Krueger personally, but it was a disaster in terms of a coaching situation, so likability and all that stuff buying in goes out the window if you're not actually producing on the ice, but they bought into Granado from what Kevyn Adams said yesterday. So they have that going forward, I guess. It's a Friday morning. We have some other stuff to get to as well. But of course, we opened up the Sabres Zoom call yesterday. Paul is going to join us at seven. Talk a little bit more about that. We'll get in on the There's not much really new to report. About Jack Eichel, but we'll talk a little bit about that as well. We'll talk NHL draft on the show. Today We are three weeks away from the NHL draft round one of the NHL draft. Ryan Wagman will join us from McCain's hockey at 8 30. And, uh, let's see what else I don't know. We'll come up with other stuff. Over the course of the day we have win cash coats. "Can be a good communicator. Um, he has that that heart and personal side of him that I absolutely love, especially when he talks about his daughter, Darren and the mental health, uh, in youth and everything. So it's I love him. I think he's great. But he's not for the Sabres. Unfortunately, he's not. Why? Because we've tried bringing him somebody new to to. You know Phil Housley, an assistant somewhere else bring him in didn't work. Uh, Ralph Krueger, and that's like a coach. That was not in hockey, but a different road to take. It didn't work. I was hoping In my opinion, was going to be a an established coach like a drug land type coach that comes in and has done it a few times. Now he's been with different organizations a few times. He has a playbook on it a blueprint and he comes in and does it or the guy that really Made things look good at the end of the season made the Sabres like a team that you could watch and be like, Hey, I like what they're doing, or like what they're doing there. So so for me, and we know it's the options that was and I'm look, these questions have to be asked. Do we know for sure that that wasn't a fluke? Do we know for sure, Like you know, we've talked about it before, Like he inherited a team that of players that yes, I know. The argument is out there of what certain players had to lose contracts and things like that. But but the pressure of winning games And performing wasn't there when he took over, so it was just kind of like Let's learning group was their record good at the end of the season. PT At the end of No. Well, do you know what their last 10 games was? Were? Yeah, we've talked about. They were three and seven, there were three and seven. That's not good. If they finished the season eight and two, and everybody's like like the fanfare is going like Donny Granados, the best coach ever know, settle down there because it's the end of the season, and the games don't mean the same, and players play a different way. The Sabres did not win more games. At the end of the season, But what the Sabres did is they looked like a team that knew what they were doing. I just remember the happy ending with Hauser. Was it Hauser? Yes, Michael Hauser, and he won a couple games and so did tackle But I've been on it like I was with the New York calendars in 2000 and 9 2010. We were awful. I was awful All year. I won one game all the way until the last 10 12 games of the season. I finished the season 72 and two in the last 11 games that I played, Okay. But we weren't a better team. We just all of a sudden got lucky We were in a better systematic team. We just played loose and main weren't afraid of making mistakes. And it was like whatever. So that's the danger. When you look at a team that has nothing to play for at the end of the season, the Sabres to me was different. They really looked. Like they had found a structure in their game that they knew audit defending new You know where to make passes. They newer players word. That's the difference When you look at the end of the season this year with Don Granado Alright things that we review. I want to quickly comment on that anything to add, because I I mean I don't know how you feel. I mean, it's it's different for a coach to take over a team that's out of the playoffs. How many times have you been through that scenario? Correct. I don't like has it. I know you had a lot of coaches, so I mean, you've been through some firings, but but anywhere you're out of the playoffs, and it's just kind of easy to play. Uh, there what? There wasn't a lot of times When I was back with Montreal that we were out of the playoffs, and it was just kind of like riding, riding the rails until the season was done. We were always kind of like in that in that race. We are always we weren't a bottom place team. Um so I don't really I don't know. The feeling of what the Sabres went through. And not having games mean anything, because the games that I even though I didn't make the playoffs, the games that we were playing. We were right there. I remember one year the Buffalo Sabres actually ended us beating us out. I remember that year that you guys beat us out by like one point, I think it was and it was a race. The last 15 games of the season meant everything and we came up a little bit short. But You know? I just don't know. I just look, there's there's obviously Still questions. I mean, question questions that if you hire Don Granado questions that that won't be answered until the team takes the ice next year. You know, that's that's like I see. You know, I'll just say this. You know the the easiest move that that Kevin Adams is going to make this year. Out of all the list that he has. The easiest thing is to pick a coach. That's the easiest out of all of them. The decisions with Jack Eichel. The decisions with Sam Ryan hurt the contract for Rasmus. Darlene. What do you pay him, You know, moving out your longest standing player in risk the line and if if that's what they choose. I mean, um, who you going to lose in the expansion draft. What's the draft going to look like who you're going to? Who are you going to pick? I mean, there's so much on his plate right now that probably the easiest, The easiest thing. And the most enjoyable thing is to go through the process of picking the coach because what Kevyn Adams and And karma knows has done. Is not only are you interviewing coaches, but you're gathering information as you speak to these men. And they're giving you information and what they feel about your organization and your team and your you can take this. And use it to your benefit. Yep. Instigators. W gr 5 50 MSG So question here in the rundown. How will Ryan Nugent Hopkins Contract impact Sam Reinhart's negotiations? So I believe Nugent Hopkins, you guys said the numbers about 5.1 or 5.2 for eight years. Something like that, Um Elliott Friedman tweeted in his 31 thoughts that, um it was going to be around 5.1 million and an eight year deal. So So someone asked me the question this morning. They said What if you, you know, does this affect Sam? Do you sign, Sam? Um, maybe keep Sam. If you trade Jack, Do you trade Jack and keep Sam in my initial reaction to that was No, no, because Kevin Adams already said he wants to get it right with the people that want to be here. I don't see Sam Reinhart signing a long term contract to be a Buffalo sabre. Um I see him, maybe taking a one year deal if he's still here. And moving on. After that. That's why I think it's imperative that the Sabres Trade him. But my question is this. Does this deal? Relate at all to Sam and what his deal might look like. Review The G M. You know, I I listen. I mean, Nugent. Hopkins has been a very strong player in this league. I don't know if he's lived up to the expectations of being the first overall pick back in. Um When was he drafted in? Um and maybe? Yeah, like 2010. He hasn't quite lived up to a number one overall expectation, but he's at a really nice career. He's a nice player, and, um, I think what he's decided as he's coming off. I think it's a five or six year deal that he was making $6 million a year, So he's done very, very well for himself. I think he is in a situation Where These. These players want to win a Stanley Cup. And if you were to bet right now,.

"They're going to have to do something at the position and you know you and I've talked about it. Did they just bridge to Yuka Peca Lucan in Are they that confident that he's going to be the guy that they don't make any sort of long term commitments or Do they want to be good right away. You know one of the one of the things that have to do with Don Granado. Okay, let's say they hire Granado. It's a young team They're going to want to learn to win. He's going to teach them the way he the way he does, You know, national development team, whatever. We're going to grow as a team. We're not expecting to win the Stanley Cup. Okay, What kind of goal does that team get? The best possible goalie, the young goalie, the veteran guy that they can count on. Do they want to get Marc Andre Fleury right. His name was thrown around like last year. So Vegas is committed to Lennar. Long term. Why would they want to not going to give a flurry? Another contract? So you kind of get to that? I don't know what they're going to do in goal, but they don't have any. They don't have an NHL goaltender under contract so they'll probably bring in two And Hallmark again. He was generally fine. So do you want to pay? Generally find pretty good. Yeah, six million a year because that's what he might want right around right around. Now. Do you try to take a flyer on somebody else's young guy that had a hot year like Carter. Hutton wasn't young when they took the flyer on him fill through power. You want to go give him a big group of U F A in Colorado has cat problems? Go ahead and give him big money, then, right Pheasant, a finalist. You want to go out and give that guy a big contract? I just don't think that's the right approach. Right, so it'll be interesting to see what they do. You know, I I Ideally, you want the goalie that makes you feel great back there every single night, But in a salary cap world you have to. You have to have conversations about every position so It is a more interesting It's a very interesting spot. In terms of what they do, and it feels like the large amount of hockey fans and how the hockey world has kind of accepted the you don't just go out and pay the top goalie on the market, big money the way you would if he's a quarterback, right? We don't do that. But It's almost like a wait and see. Do you have You say no to group our you saying no to Gibson. Who do you say? Yes. To Yeah, well, I'm asking myself that too. Like I don't even know who the who The answer is. There are a truckload of free agent goalies on the market this year. To now, again varying degrees of contract. If you're Philip Group hours, 29, I'm going to guess you're looking for a pretty good sized deal off the season. He just add. Took her ass. Pecker, Rene Frederik Andersen, Devon Dubnyk. Uh, ego. Ego. She's Sturcken. He's restricted. Sorry. Those guys are all U F phase. James Reimer, Peter Marra. Zack, You want him? What about the Florida goalie? The guy that's behind Um, What was it brightens Chris Trigger, Chris trigger. Thank you. Right. He's behind both. Bobrovsky and their first trump expense er night. Yeah, so he's changing to what happens with him, like Is that a guy? I mean, maybe an R F A, Um or are you if I'll double check? Is that an answer for you? Because, you know he's had some success right? And like. It's a he's six ft Four like you might like a tall goalie, But you wouldn't be paying this guy $7 million a year anyway. Well, if you're the Sabres, you might decide again. Like what is Kevyn Adams? How does Kevin Adams view this team? Does he think Our scouts are Pro scouts say this guy is a number one. Yeah, we're going to sign him for five years. 30,000,005 years $35 million. We think he's the number one just Do it. See? But okay, all right, I'll not that I would do this, but I guess if you want to play along on how this all fits, it's entirely possible. Over the next few weeks, Three guys will come off the roster that eat up about $20 Million of Cap space. Michael Reinhardt risk the line in So you would certainly be opening up a lot of cap space. If you wanted to pay a goalie. Big money it gets to for me. I guess it gets to Toby readers going to eat up a lot of that, though. No, no, But Darlene Yoki har you future contract. Borgen. Those are three R F A s middle stats. An R F a splint and R F A Right? But it gets to, I guess you know, I know the position. Yes, the positions important, Ultimately, that's the guy who has to stop the puck and I think, but I still think it comes down to what kind of a team do you have? Like when we're watching? I mean, Carter Hutton turns out to be not so good. But we were watching the Sabres and we're seeing them lose hockey games We're talking about boy. If the goal is could just come up with a clutch, save every now and then to bail out the team when they're making mistakes in front of them. Don't know that Kevin Adams vision should be. We're going to be young from the next 23 years we're going to develop. We're going to have some talent here. We're going to maybe go through some growing pains. We're going to be prone to mistakes. I need a wall back there. I need like a big giant freaking wall to cover up for what this team is going to be going through as it goes through its growing pains. I'm just not a fan of you know you can find a goalie, but whether or not you want to pay him a big, big contract, high cap number long term. I'm just not a fan of that. I just think nobody was talking about Montreal as a model. Now, all of a sudden, they win three playoff series and and Marc Bergeron is the version is all of a sudden the GM of the year when he's been on the hot seat for how many years now in Montreal. It was not a good contract to give out. Nobody in the league thought it was a good contract to give out to carry price. But all of a sudden they make a little run, and now we're looking at them and saying Yep. Do what The Canadians did go sink tons of money into the best goal you can find and bring them in here right now. It's just not the way I would. I know I got to have a good goalie. That doesn't mean you've got to find the most expensive, biggest contract, you know, sink it into a good free agent goalie and pay that guy $678 million a year. No, I just don't think that's the way to go. That's not to me. That's not the correct way to allocate your resources. The thing that Montreal is getting right now. Is first off. They don't have a really high paid forward on the roster, the highest paid salaries Brendan Gallagher 6.5. Josh Anderson Tyler Toffoli. How bout to Foley, who signed for them as a great signing for them? 4.2 you know, that was one of those silly season free agencies where they got what they really came for. Then you've got young and cheap. So if you wanna talk about The Sabres being better. This is this. This is how you again It's not like how you build a roster. Not trying to say Montreal is perfect, but Whole Caulfield 20 years old entry level contract. He's good. Nick Suzuki 21 Entry Level contract. He's good economy. Cut, Kenny Emmy. Sorry of struggling on that again, Um They've They've got young guys that jumped in and have really given them results. And with that, it's one thing that The Sabres have not had that mix right whether it's rushing middle stat or not playing roots align in soon enough, right? It seems like The organization can always claim that the timelines there on are the best. If a guy comes up and does really well in rot does really well after being in Rochester. Well,.

"We look at the draft. As a as a trigger date July 23rd 24th, because historically speaking, that's a breeding ground for the bigger type of trades. Stand a couple little bit awarded your through the July 21st expansion draft. You've got free agency looming on July 28th. So there's a lot of reasons why General managers and clubs have more flexibility. Even though next to again be a flat cap. It, um but I feel like Kevin Adams. As the majority of his conversations. He doesn't need to talk to another general manager to explore the interesting Jack Eichel. The teams with interests have expressed therein, Kristen Now you're you're at that stage where it's probably working towards a framework of what a trade would look like, and the elements that the Buffalo Sabres need to come back. I don't know that you get into the deep specifics. To say, Well, I need player X and I need this and you need this. I mean, it's going to be fairly obvious, isn't it? I mean, the Sabres had the first pick overall, so they're going to be looking for at least another first round draft back. Um, And if that team doesn't possess a high first round draft pick Well, then your prospect gets juice here or the young roster player that's coming back the other way as part of the package. Get increasingly interesting as well. So what? You got to be careful of here, Petey and you and I swapped the text earlier this morning about this is there's still much speculation around the stories of the Buffalo Sabres. Because of the players involved. When you're talking about a star player like Jack Eichel, regardless of the injury situation, and all that that still hasn't been completely iron note. Every media member in their market is going to devise a plan or an idea as to why their team should go after Jack Eichel. So you've got to be careful in separating fact from fiction, and we talked about the idea that the Columbus Blue Jackets are out of it right. There are no longer in on Jack Eichel. Um, I don't buy it to be fair. I don't buy it. And the reason I don't buy it. Is it so early? And that's not the M O of, um, Okay, Kalinin. He may not like what Kevyn Adams is telling them right now, whatever the pieces that could or would have to be included. In making a deal very soon. Normal may not like, but he needs a center right? He told Patrick Line. A, um before the end of the season, that top priority was to get Patrick Line a top center. Well, there aren't that many available. I can assure you of that, and there are none available as good as capable as a healthy Jack Eichel. How can you be out at this stage? How can you be out at this stage Drags? Um, you talk about another team that would need a center in Columbus. Yes. I just don't know that Columbus has the pieces, but maybe you can make it work somehow, you know, but dress. Uh, ribs dropped two bombs on us this morning before leaving one, he said when we acquired Josh Anderson, so he talked about himself as part of Marc Bergevin is group in Montreal that acquired Josh Anderson in the trade. And two at the very and he said, Hey, Vegas is out of the playoffs. They need a center. They had Chandler Stephenson has a number one center to have William Karlsson. They have Keegan Cola Sardi. They don't have a top center. So my my asking to you is okay. How long after Vegas is out of the playoffs before we hear Vegas is in the running for Jack Eichel. And I think they have pieces. So where do you Where do you think that comes through? Uh, well, I'd be surprised if McCrimmon Kelly McCrimmon, the general manager of the Golden Knights hasn't already out of conversation with Kevin. But I would you know if Vegas said one And was forcing a game seven. That's just part of doing your due diligence and doing your job as general manager, and Kelly is a smart guy. I mean, he sees the same things that the rest of us see. And when you look at the Vegas Golden Knights up the middle you've identified You know they're they're cast of sentiment, and it's not strong enough. It's not strong enough. You know, Chandler Stephenson has probably underrated by those who don't watch the Vegas Golden Knights closely, and we had Max patch already on the podcast, probably six weeks or so called And he openly talked about how good Chandler Stephenson is, but, you know is he too? Is he a three? On a really good team? A team that has, you know, depth at center probably is not likely a number one with all due respect. So I can't imagine that the Kremlin in the Vegas Golden Knights won't explore this because they look at everything right. Recently acquired Robin letter in the first place was because they had long term concerns. About the wear and terror and the toll that that would take on Marc Andre Fleury. They didn't want to get to a Stanley Cup final and have flurry run out of gas or to be injured. So they acquire Robin Leonard and you've got the one and you've got the one A and we can debate who one is and who one is just depending on how things go. That's just my example of an organization that has identified a weakness or a need or an opportunity. Right. Alex Pietrangelo was an opportunity for the Vegas Golden Knights wasn't a necessity. They just felt like okay, we can bolster blue line. Why wouldn't we go after the most coveted Unrestricted free agent defenseman available and they acquired that piece. So I I get it. I I can I can see what ribs is on, and it makes a lot of sense to me and Marty, you're bang on I mean, the Vegas Golden Knights have the pieces to make something like that happen. And Bill Foley, the owner of the Vegas Golden Knights, is an impatient dude. I mean, he's in his mid seventies he wants to within a Stanley Cup as much or more than most of the owners across the national actually, who haven't had the luxury of doing so. So Vegas for sure needs to be in that conversation, regardless of somebody coming out and saying, source says this I mean, just common sense tells us Vegas will make that call. Instigators. Darren Drager joining us here He's out, Darren Dragger on Twitter. TSN hockey insider. You'll be in Montreal covering the finals. Um you know drugs we heard this week. I can't remember where Where the rumor started. But Matt could Chuck might want out of Brian Shane O'Brien. Thank you, Um MCA, Chuck, um, might want out of Calgary. Is there any truth to that? Well, look, I don't like shooting down information just automatically because number one, that's that's not my job to defend. Matthew could Chuck or the Calgary Flames. But I can tell you that reaching out to sources in Calgary, it was instantly refuted. And I would say angrily, So, um, but you know again to dismiss that out of hand and say that it's 100% wrong. Might be a little unfair to the process as well. I don't believe that Matthew could. Chuck is in play again, based on the response that I got to that, But I do look at the Calgary Flames, and I look at the history of Brad Tree loving the general manager. And I know that he can see that they've got to do something. They've got to attack the core of that team. So if it isn't Johnny Gaudreau, and it isn't Matthew get chucked. And who are we talking about here? And it feels like the one guy left is Sean Monahan at and Sean Monahan. Rumors have been out there for a while. They were out there during last offseason. They're out there now, and it feels to me like if they're going to part with one piece from that core. It's likely going to be Sean Monahan. And you know Rebstock here about you know we as the Montreal Canadians acquiring Josh Anderson. Calgary Flames were pretty heavy in on Josh Anderson before he got traded to the Montreal Canadians and Sean Monahan was part of what would have had to have gone. The other way and troll living just didn't want to give up a center as part of the deal, But now I think he realizes that they've got to be something to shake up. That course. So I don't think it's Matthew chopped based on the response that I got But I could see Calgary to doing something fairly significant and that might be involving Sean Manana. Okay, So Jacki Coal is one thing Calgary can Chuck Monahan and I think it's a second tier of players like Jack. I calls a top tier player. Second tier players. We have Sam Reinhart. We have Rasmus crystalline, and I think those two Are more on the market. And Jack Eichel is but everybody is calling on everybody. You hear anything on Reinhart wrestle linen? Is there talks about those two? And would that happened at the draft or before the draft? Yeah. I mean, there is talk of those two. There's no question about that. They're talking a lot of different players. So I just want to want to circle back and something you just said, though, Marty, you don't think Eichel is going to be traded or you're not sure he's going? I don't think he is. I said that from the beginning and it's only I don't have any information..

"Want to know that the organization feels that way and You know, for most of Iculs tenure here, the organization has been very slow and late to do that and my opinion that's a big part of the disconnect Here. We have a player with a multiple players that want out The players are saying what I think fans want to hear from the team. Adams was slow. I mean, Adam's got there. But It was too late. You know, when he when he made it to the well there, there's a disconnect between the team and the fans and made a coaching change. And you see what the coaching change did I mean, Non Granado came in. He didn't He didn't have Michael Kruger did. He didn't have all mark for most of it. Kruger did He didn't have McCabe Krueger did. You know, so they're best d their best forward in their best goaltender. Kruger had those guys and wound up where he wound up in the standings. Granado didn't have those guys and did much better. You know, just showing what you can do with a better coach. But again, it was way way too little, too late, realizing that You know things are things are bad. And Jeremy, I I've been at this longer than you have in this town and for me. And I've said this before. I think we talked about this when I was in with you a couple of weeks ago that I have never seen a more hated buffalo team than this. This hockey team is in this town. Whether it's the bills the Sabres and Don't forget the bills didn't make the playoffs for 17 years. And I still did not see a team is hated As much as his team is by the fans. The fans despise this team. And they've got work to do. Yeah, and Adams, I think realizes it now, and he said it a couple times that No, there's well. That's where he feels. The disconnected sits between the team and its fans, and it's his job. To fix that, and he needs to fix that. He's right. He needs to fix that. And he needs to get a team together that this this community is proud of. That this community wants to go see? And right now, there's not too many people that are proud of the Buffalo Sabres that live in Buffalo. They don't It's right. It's funny, though, Paul, one of the things that's That's strangely come out of this, though, is there is one popular person in the organization. Not quite universal, but pretty close, and that's don Granado. You know, he might keep the job and I don't think he would get the job because of that, but it certainly doesn't hurt. It's not often I think you can hire your interim coach. That isn't a proven winner. And, you know, maybe Kruger's higher was was power popular. Maybe Housley's was to looking back. Whatever you know, change is always welcomed. Coronado had some results and he spoke to the fans. And he said, a lot of things that they like and I guess the question I would have for you is, you know is Kevyn Adams and Jason Carmen will start to build this roster. They're going to hire their coach. I think they would do that first. They would. They would name whoever the coaches and I think Granados, the favorite looking like it might go that way. So do they start building in the image of a team that that he thinks about? Or do Kevin Adams and Jason Karmanos and the parole is that that they have this this kind of vision? Is this going to be Heavy team of fast team, a defensive team. Do they want to be the Islanders? They want to be Vegas. You know, I just wonder what they envision because it really is about starting from scratch outside of, you know, cousins, Darlene Middle stat. And some other nice pieces. But you know, how do they do it? Who is in charge of what the final picture looks like? Because they love talking about their vision. And, of course, so far at this point, they haven't really completed anyone. Exactly, And that's your right. They have to get a coach in and then that's when they start filling in the players around which I think is a pretty decent core. That's why I don't think this is a complete rebuild. Because I think they have a very nice young core to build around. It's not finished. I mean, they've got to build around. They got to do a lot better than they did building around Ryan article Yeah, they, uh, you know, in my opinion that people talk about the tank, the tank worked. What the tank was designed to do was to get either McDavid's or Eichel and also and and Reinhardt was part of it, too. But it wasn't to get Reinhardt. It was to get a very high pick in that draft. Also. You know, knowing you know that That's the one before Michael and they they accomplished it. And wind up drafting Reinhardt, who is a 20 goal score every year except one for the Sabres. So it worked for what they were trying to do. They were trying to get some high end players. To be able to build a team around what failed was they had general managers that had no idea what to do once they got the pieces they needed in Eichel and in Reinhardt. And they didn't know what to do with it and how to build around it. Well, that's what the what the task is now for Adams. It's like you've got this core of young players at Don Granado has done a nice job of getting the most out of And now he has to be able to understand. Who is the coach? What is he? How does he want to play? And you know, that's that's what Adams and Karmanos want to do. I mean, it seems like they like what Granado selling as far how he wants to play, which is You know, take the strengths of your good players. Put them all together, then develop a system that play to the strengths. Alright, Darlene, we want you to do this because you're good at it. Yoki, How are you? We want you to do this because you're good at this. Um, Middle stat here. We're going to put you in some different situations. The near used to, because we think you can handle it by doing this because you do this. Well, you do this well. And that's and he tries to develop now a system that augments the good things that each player can bring to the table. That way. So, um, you know whether it's Granado or for me, it's either Granado or Brenda more and bring more becomes available, And now that their season is over, we'll see where that goes. But, um That's that's what they have to do is all right. This guy is going to be the coach. This is what he's going to bring to the table. This is what he expects out of his players. This is what we feel we need to do. To help augment the players that they have to make this team better, You know, improving the top six. Improving the bottom six. Improving the goaltending. But why? How do you want to do that? How do you want to go about that? And that's you know where the coach comes into play to, um to the bigger picture, Paul. We limited it to Eichel. Now. You also mentioned Reinhart and I'll throw in risk the line and what are the odds in this offseason? All three of them are traded. Are you expecting that? Mm. Probably not, Um Unless I'm totally off base here, and I don't think I am Reinhart wants nothing to do with signing a long term deal in Buffalo. I mean, if that that would be the desired Thing that you'd want. But if he's not willing to do that, and all he's going to do is accept qualifying offer. And then take off on you after one year. His value is never going to be higher than it is right now he's coming off his best, very best season by far And you know you have to be. You have to take advantage of that value and sometimes even good with good players. Sometimes it's a smart thing to trade good players when they're at the top of their game. You know, depending what you can get for that good player. You have a good opportunity to improve your team with multiple players by moving that player when he's at his best. Well, if that player doesn't want to be here. And that player is just going to hang out for one more year. And the next thing you know he's going to be an unrestricted free agent and goal. Well, I think you I think his values more now than it would be. If you wait until next season and try to trade him at the trade deadline. Be quite honest with you. I think you I think you probably can do better in the trade if you do it in the summer time, so Um, you know that that's where I would be at with him. You know, if he if he's absolutely adamant that no, I'm not signing anything more than a one year deal. Well, that that did. Your job has just been made for you. I agree. I think he's a goner. What about risk of linen? Same. He's in that kind of the said. Well, he's not an R F A has got one year left, and then he's an unrestricted free agent..

So for background folks Brian played in the NHL. He was an agent and later a general manager, And that's why I thought it would be really cool to get your perspective on the big story up here. And that is what's going on with Jack Eichel, because I think you can relate. From the three key angles here, Let's let's start with the player in you. As a former player, put yourself in Michael's shoes. Would you be in line with what he is thinking right now? Would you be getting, I guess frustrated with what's going on right now, if you were in his skates. I can understand his frustration. Yes, absolutely. It's been very concerning. I have to be honest with you to hear what you hear. You wish This stuff was private. You know you don't want to Air, your dirty laundry, so to speak. These types of conversations do take place They do happen. I'm not privy to how it went sideways. I've heard Kevin Adams and he's been very forthright that he's been very communicative. I'll take him at his word. I just think there's a lot of things to unpack with Jack Beyond just the injury. Obviously, he's probably frustrated. Things haven't come together. You've got good ownership up there. But for whatever reason. I just haven't been able to pull it together. And yet when you look at the roster and you look at some of the players on there, and you look at How fortunate Buffalo was in the draft lottery. You can see some sunshine at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. It's not an oncoming train. It should lead To better days, but there's a lot of things that are very delicate that have to be handled prior to getting there. Okay, So now you know, you mentioned it's gone sideways. I could use the word disconnect during his zoom call with the media. Now you're the agent. What does the agents role in? This is the agent supposed to try and fix the disconnect or you do whatever your client asks you to do. Um I always did what my clients asked me to do. But not until I told him what I thought about what their decision was in. Why, so that's the first step in the process is to sit down and this is where you know you can lie to the GM. You can lie to the media, but As the player in the agent. You don't want to lie to yourself. You want to try to figure out, you know? What are you really trying to accomplish here? Are you trying to accomplish that? You want to do a certain medical procedure? Are you trying to accomplish that? You would like to move on to another organization and just hasn't worked out. I don't know what the answer is to that, But that's the first thing I would figure out Jack Eichel. It feels to me more like he wants to move on from the Buffalo Sabres, and that's really concerning, obviously if you're an owner of the savers or general manager or coach. Or even a player. Um, you know, you don't want your good players to want to leave. Obviously, it seems like we're going to ultimately find out the truth, though, if he gets the surgery, and that seems to me it's about the medical procedure. And if he doesn't, then we'll find out that It was, you know, just some a tool to be used, which would be Don't know. I feel I feel like that. Would that would not go over? Well for anybody. I mean to the image of the player. The two Portray that you want a medical procedure and then just decided not to get it. Yes, that's true. All ultimately you know, these are this is why you have to have good management first and foremost. And their hockey club. These types of issues. They're not unique to Buffalo. This one may feel unique Star player wants a certain procedure, not agreement with the club. When you had the totality of it. Yes, it certainly Challenging. But again, all these things have happened in the past. You've got to figure out a way to navigate them. You've seen great players. Didn't want to play anymore. In a city like Matthew Shane have to sit there and wait until he got traded. The club has a lot of, say. What goes on. In the end, the club has a lot of options in the end. You just have to meticulously go through it, and that's why I say it comes back to. You need to have a really strong management team. I don't really just a really strong General manager but a strong management team so you can sit down and really intellectually plan out what's best for the organization that cycles trying to do that, with his Side of the equation. Being his agent, his family, Whatever other advisers, he has, but ultimately You know, I really truly believe there's a good path to success and a kid come in a variety of different ways for the Sabres. You can trade any elite player. I have been there contemplating this when I was in capital running them. We had an incredible trade for our best player at the time. Ultimately, one of the owners wouldn't let it Happened, but you can Go through the process that was a little bit different than the player was about four years older and Jack's case. You know if his procedure goes well, he's got a lot of good years ahead of him, and that makes it more challenging to make Really great trade. But I have no doubt the Buffalo Sabres. If they decide to go, that route can make a good trade for Jack Eichel. We're with Brian Lawton from NHL network on our West. Our hotline. I did want to ask you about that if it gets to that point because you were a GM in this league, So now you get that spot your your Kevyn Adams before we get to what you might be seeking in some kind of return. Should you trade Jack? How would you handle this? If you were Making a suggestion to ownership in terms of what to do We know the sabers don't believe the medical the surgery is the way to go. They haven't changed their mind on that. Adam's maintains Cycle has not requested a trade. If you're the GM, How would you play this one out? What would you suggest? Got to have a heart to heart with the player and ask him I was never big on Wanting to have players on our team that didn't want to be there. It's not as simple as that. But you have to come up with some core principles that you stand for as a general manager, and whatever you stand for the general manager Are the core principles..

"Buffalo sabers will pick first overall in the NHL draft after winning the lottery. Met man. I almost got choked up in that first segment after they want it. I can't believe that happened. I can't believe that happened. I just I didn't care about it at all Coming in. I think I explained it earlier bus I could like I just We've won nothing for 10 years and any wind is just like anyone that actually, I guess it doesn't mean anything. That's why I can't believe I'm getting this way. But One in 10 years. Just to win even a lottery. It's like such a good feeling. We are going to continue into the eight o'clock hour because sabers gentle manager Kevyn Adams will be meeting with the media at 8 30. So we will bring that to you Live here on W gr. So plenty of time for your reaction as to what the saber should do with the first overall pick. Um, I've made a couple of points. I wanna get the look use in just a second year, but let's go back to the phone lines. I don't have a name on my screener caller. What's your name? Just get me. Yep. John, Go ahead. What's What's your What's your What's your thoughts? Yeah, just like that. Little love the show. By the way. Thank you. I, You know, I would like to talk about this a second about power. Watch him a little bit of the world. She's he's doing really well with the world and you know that's amongst men. I know it's not the world of weeks. They're still playing. He's the he's the number one defense run and number one pairing. Now the problem with the shapers is he's a left handed defenseman, which is the same as Ross. Darlene. So are you gonna move one of them Tow? You know, right handed defenseman. You're gonna move on to the off wing or you're gonna Draft a guy first overall. Act after actually draft two guys first overall and one of me playing your second pair. Well, that's that's the bad thing right there. I That's You know what? It's a fair point, because you're right. You would be having one of them is a second pair defenseman. Now in my mind to thoughts came as you were speaking one is Yeah. I don't want to touch Darlene Yoki, are you You know, like they were so good down the stretch together and they're both so young, and they're the best prospects you have currently in the organization. I just kind of want to let them flourish together. Which would mean right. The power would be kind of leading your second pair and man how much of it is they're spending a first overall pick on a second pair defenseman. I get why that could be Troublesome. My other thought, though, was I've always wondered about Darlene and which side he plays because he came into the NHL playing as a right side defenseman. He's a left shot, but he always played on his offside until we got here. And they changed it. And I don't know. I've always wondered. Maybe you want to go back to what he did in for Linda and what he did for team Sweden at the World Juniors. I mean, we just saw this year Uh, the sabers going back. Taking a player and going back to what he did before he got to the sabers. Kind of worked with Sam Reinhart playing center, didn't it? I mean, the sabers took guys that they thought I was gonna put him in a different position in the NHL. Then it's like you put him back in their natural positions like I'll look, they could do it. Yeah, Dog. Sam run her plates centers entire life. You forget how to do it. Of course, he was going to be good at it when you tried it again. And Darlene. I've had that wonder like, Would he be better suited on the right side Because again, that's the position he played. So you have multiple options. You could just keep Darlene Jochi. How are you together? If you did this pick or and this is probably not for this year. Probably be for the future. Um Or you could just throw power. And Just throw power and Eileen together, but Donnelly employing his offside. Mean? It sounds good on paper. I don't know if it would work, but I'd like to see you tried. One power. That's enough. I feel like that was a vote against Owen. Power for being the sabers. First overall pick William Ackland Luke use Let's actually let's take a time out here. And we'll come back. We'll take more calls at 803 or 5 50 on the sabers winning the draft lottery. I want to get to Michigan Commit Luke use who is I think I saw the youngest player in this draft. He's at least the youngest player among the first round prospects that I saw. Not even 18 years old yet. Not even in college hockey at But off the defenseman at the top, and this is a defense heavy draft at the top. I feel like he's got the highest upside and I'll explain why he's intriguing to me when when we come back here on the nightcap, Jody BSC Kevin Adams coming your way at 8 30 Sabers win the first overall pick in the draft lottery will keep talking about it when we returned on W gr Finding great candidates, the higher Converium like well, trying to find a needle in a haystack. "Maura from EJ erratic of NHL network, a couple of things for the E. J. And I'm curious Now I'm going to get you Into the third round, Okay, because well, while things were getting better in terms of covert in the states, it's not so good in Canada. I think I read today that Ontario's going to extend their shut down for a couple more weeks. Has the league figured out what they would do come round three when the North Division champion has to go somewhere. I think. Well, you know, this whole situation has been fluid, right? Even going back to when it all started on. I think they've been kind of dealing with things on the fly. I remember going back to last year we were getting ready to go. Go into the bubble. There was talk that the two bubbles that it would be dangerous and Vancouver and then that changed kind of very dramatically into admitting and Toronto. Lead in that process because of changes and medical concerns and local health issues in the in Vancouver and in Vegas, so Exchange, and I think that this is one of those situations where The league has probably got several things. You're talking about several options, and they're gonna kind of she, hell things play out, but I would think that Pretty far along with the idea that that it will be difficult. Or the least to have anybody up there, So I think we might be in a situation where they may have to locate. But David believes because I could be doing this to be the today it could be the Jets. I mean, really, it is kind of wide open all over leaks. Has seemingly been the best team. Anything? What? So far this year, so I think whoever it is, my guess is that they might have to relocate to A North American city like we've seen with the Toronto Blue Jays, for example, on Detroit a Raptor and do something along those lines. I think if there's any concern at all About Possible further outbreaks and a possible stop it they probably have to even consider Going into a bubble for the semifinals. Just because of that, because I don't think from a business standpoint, the league could afford to have this thing stopped at any point because the team can't continue. You know when you're not going to force the team, obviously, that has Health issue within their group to continue, so I think there's still a lot of thing for several things. I'd stay on the table as they plan out the 3rd and 4th round of the playoffs, But I think again it's fluid, and I think that they'll probably go through all these different options and see where Things forward the closer and then make a decision. And and then Lastly, I was curious. Do we know? Is there the plan for next season? EJ is it to return to what were the normal divisions and that playoff format? As far as we know that that is the plan. There's a talk about to kind of different schedules one that More focused on the divisional play, but where you would play everybody else as well. And I think the difference in the two in the to schedule that they are looking at is one You play in your division a lot, And then you play everybody else, and he called him out like two times. Everybody else the other proposal. If you play your division, then you play that extra game. Maybe against the other team in your conference. So you have three games against your junior college. Then you play one game each against kings in the West. I think they're looking at both of those. I think you get influenced by by some of this in division play this year. Some of the positive of that I'll be curious to see which things kind of carry over in the future. Kind of, you know the state of these ideas of playing two games in the same city. Seems like it's been something that is a doable thing to move forward with in certain situations down the road, So I think those of the those are the things they're looking at tonight. There. There isn't an appetite to continue with this current form at the idea is they want to go back to. It'll be really and even balance now, with 18 at each of the four divisions. Well, E j. I appreciate your coming on with us. You're gonna be a busy guy The next couple of months with NHL now enjoy the playoffs, sir. All right. Thank you very much. Always a pleasure. Quick note, and then I break in. I wanna get you in here. We'll talk a little bit about the playoffs. You know when he when EJ was talking about the North division champion Whoever it is Drano, Evanston, Winnipeg, Montreal So they'll stay in their division for the first two rounds, and they come out for the third division and they'll play US based team and if they relocate Like people would know we were wondering people were thinking Hey, if Toronto comes out of the North Division Did they come here and and play the semi final games in Buffalo? Maybe. But maybe not. I think one thing I saw the league was talking about relocating the North Division champion. Geographically close to the team they're playing, so wouldn't be. You would necessarily move Toronto to Buffalo or munch my choose closest of Montreal, US or Boston, you would necessarily pick the closest U. S based city to that team. You would put them near their opponent. So if Toronto is playing, Ah, day Chicago and whatever put him put him in Minnesota or Detroit. You know what I'm saying? It wouldn't necessarily be leaves here because we're closest to them. Maybe the leaves here if they play Pittsburgh, let's say trying to place Pittsburgh geographically. What's close to the Penguins? US. Philly s so you could see that happen with with the North Division champion. All right, Breaking here we go. You ready? Here in the first round? Syriza's You tell me When you find the most intriguing stories or the best series to watch Carolina National Florida Tampa in there and see that be the central Division, the East We know Pittsburgh, the Islanders Boston Washington. North Toronto, Montreal, Evanston, Winnipeg and the West. Colorado ST Louis Vegas, Minnesota. Yes, Syriza watch. See, I'm all in.

"But even that, I mean, it's not like front office is gonna be jumping through hoops to make a mega office for Jack Eichel. I mean, yes, he's ultra towns that everyone's gonna you know the Hill Hill. Certainly pick up a premium, but the same cream and he would've got 18 months ago. Absolutely not. No, but those were still in my opinion, pretty big hoops. I mean, I think some teams would and that's assuming that His medical gets worked out in one way or another. I mean, I I He's 24. This is an injury that guys do get through. No nobody's ever been talking about like the end of his career. Anything through this at least as far as I know. So, Travis. I mean, maybe there would be an extra first round pick Ah, year ago or something. But shouldn't the sabers still do well? Yeah, they should do well, but What you just said. It's an important point right? Like a year ago. This Guess That's my point. Right? Like the issue was known, and the savers tried attacks right or wrong. They tried attack of what's managed through its work with a player. We think we've improved the roster to some degree to appease the player it is. I want to just sit here and lose every single season. They made that bet. And you know you could easily go back in time and say that was the right that maybe I do go back right back. But here's the problem that didn't pay right. You got a losing ticket your hand right now right, And that That is a big problem for the sabers organization because Yes, You're right. Maybe they get an extra first round pick. But that's not insignificant. Doubly sell for a team as top heavy is the sabers. I cannot think of an organization right now. With such a significant drop off from their first or first two forwards to the rest of the core group that you have in the active roster or through the prospect pool. I mean, Had been 10 is still a sick mind bogglingly top heavy team and their depth looks extraordinary compared to the sabers. So like again, it's not so much about, you know, Criticizing savers. What have they done wrong? What if they've done right? It's more so, like, Look, you invest. You bought this stock in 100 bucks. It's now at 90 bucks, and like you might have had all the right. Read on why you should have bought it in 100 bucks. You drew down by 10%. And now you're stuck here wondering to yourself Is this the piece? We have moved to bolster the rest of the roster and just kind of cut bait with what is ultimately going to be a failed Picked not because of the player and and maybe not even holy because of us, but it just didn't work out The timing. Whatever the case is I just don't know how much longer I mean, that he saw started to tip back where you start to really wonder like There's some real danger in trying to run it back one more time. And if and if the savers come out next year, and I will still on the roster, and they're horrible on do they look a lot like they did this year and again like we're sitting here dancing around that, like, how did they get that much better in three months. I think it's gonna cause bigger problems with Michael. I mean not want to get into full trade demand scenarios. I mean, we've seen that never industry ever. Every sports industry there is It never works that well, and teams usually get hemmed up from it. And I think to your point, Mike Like there is a market right now for the player on do you've got to make the bet, like, okay, we may not be getting as much right now. But is it more today than what we're gonna get tomorrow? And I think the answer might be yes. Right. The no move the no move. The players know move kicks in like this coming season is the last season without that on the contract, So if they want, control it and want to avoid a scenario where Taylor Hall tells them where he wants to go. In this case, it would be Jack Eichel. Like for sure. I mean, the time to do it is probably this offseason. You'd think unless they want to get him on the ice to show everyone that he could still play. But boy, I don't know is a team gonna want to make that kind of a trade in season. Up to him and like and and the other thing, the other. I mean, another data point on that is like, you know, we don't see it as much in the NHL. But there's nothing saying Michael's gonna play ball with that, too. Right? Like For the most part, you know, even though they've been misaligned, it's been Don't know The relationship has been okay. Definitely substandard, but it's not completely toxic to the point where No, You've got to think about ice and a player or healthy scratching a player because it's like that. We just can't have this guy around right now. It's just so so. Untenable on Do you know I I don't I don't mean the boogeyman it but you cannot listen to that guy today and think that that's not possible in the range of possible outcomes. That is certainly one of them And if it goes down that path Your point. You gotta you gotta know. Move cause kick in. You have the risk of a player Just basically saying, you know what I've got enough. I think we should. I think we should sit this one out like We've seen in the past. It might be fairly rare in the NHL, but on the other hand, like it's not common for superstars like I go to be this in front of I'm not gonna say I want to trade but I'm giving you all the indications. Quite the decisions for sabers general manager Kevyn Adams in the rest of the front office to make this offseason after everything that has gone down in the last 48 hours. And That aside, I have some good news for you. That's not where the fun ends. That your paddock Chevrolet Sports update paddock Chevrolet with you for the extra mile. I'm breaking Wilson for w GR Sports Radio 5 15 It's how it's Simon and Jeremy White Show possible. One Howard Simon one. Jeremy White What w gr Sports Radio 5 50. Then south sitting in and sucking this week in place of Jeremy, at least for the first three days of the week, and then we'll be named Gary and Paul Hamilton picking up the The mantle. The mantle? No, You don't pick up the mantle. You pick up the baton, but done. There you go. All right. So Ryan Miller has the baton. You can't If you pick up the baton, it's felt like which means the baton fell. So what do you pick? Actually, you don't pick up the mantle. What do you pick up? You pick up the It has to be a phrase like he got. You're going to pick up the And go with it Slack slack. Really? I thought there was something else There is making them in south slacking. I guess that's what that means. You pick up the You know, whatever. This is just part. Like I said, you turned 58 just have these moments where he Can't member names or key words or phrases or any of this stuff anymore. All right, let me follow up on Ryan Miller cause breaking Did all the saber stuff you update on what's been going on What's happening with the zoom calls and all that stuff? You know what I think Sal, too, about the Ryan Miller discussion. This is where what Ryan Miller discussing? It just turned you guys on Brighton has an article about Ryan Miller Hall of Famer. We were having a little bit of discussion about that, and we will bring up the fact that you know, there were some, of course, are always some detractors, but it seemed like Ryan Miller. Had some people that like what Hall of Famer, you guys Air Hi. What are you talking about? No. One You know what I thought And I think the hash it. Discussion is the first thing that came into my head. You didn't want to be that close to hash it because you're gonna be. It's unfair to compare anybody to that guy. Because He's off freak of nature in terms of how that position was played by him that I've never seen anybody else be able to accomplish. And I'm not. I doubt I will the rest of my career. I've seen great goalies. Nobody played it like he did like it was just, you know, the without a spine thing and all the other stuff. Okay, but you know, but you know what else I think also, what hurts, Right? What hurt Ryan Miller. Or if you are Ryan Miller? Detractor. You would look at it and go. He had Much better team in front of him than Dominic Ashiq ever had in his time of sabers goalie And I think there is some element of truth to that. I think the portrayal of hash it you know, for example, a teen Oh into the cup finals or even Back to back years when they went to the conference final loss to Washington, and then they go to the finals and They lose to Dallas, and he's in that. I mean, this guy is winning Hart trophies. He's not just winning visited trophies. He is his own discussion s. So I think there is you pale In comparison. Anybody would Lined up against hash it. But also hash it. The perception is with the narrative is When they went to the cup finals. Hashtag was basically playing behind a bunch of slugs, which isn't it's not fair to those teams. But I will also tell you You know, there was no pre air. There was no Drury. He was enigmatic at times, but the talent level of a guy like a fin again off. I mean, the players that Ron the back to back conference final teams. We're better than the collection of talent that Dominic cashing had as a group in front of him. I would agree to that. I think maybe that hurts Ryan Miller to that there might be an element of fans that are less inclined to say Yeah, guys, he was. He was really good. He's the backstop, and he was really fantastic in that stretch and more about well, Yeah, man. Look at the team he had in front of them. They were Presidents Trophy champions. You know they were They were For a two year stretch their arguably the best, if not one of the top three in performance in the National Hockey League, and I think you would tend to maybe not give enough credit to the goalie with a team like that, whereas hash it was those guys were bad. He would stop 50 shots tonight and hope that they want to game one. Nothing or 2 to 1. I remember. Was living in Florida the time you know during the Dominic Cash it run essentially the entire time. And I remember even in Tampa when the sabers would play there, listening to sports talk radio. And the hosts would basically say that team is not good at all. It's all goalie like they would say that about the sabers. Sabers were good, and but that that was the perception there's no doubt about it. Now. I think that they were better than a lot of people gave him credit for and thought a lot of areas in ways. But sure, I mean, and we all know they didn't have Dominick cash it they would not have been Not have had some of the seasons they had, you know, in advance in the playoffs the way they did a couple of times, But that was absolutely the perception outside of Buffalo, especially which is it was all goalie was all Dominic Castaic. I think, Yeah, for sure, And and I think part of it was not the case for the For those. Oh, six or seven team, which is Ryan Miller's really good Now. I think Ryan Miller that became kind of a household name because of the Olympics, right people were into it. United States. He's the goalie for them. That was a big deal. But the sabers were known to be a much different kind of team than they were just what 67 years before that, Essentially, Ryan Miller became at some point. I'm thinking about the the year they went to the Winter Classic, and he was in the national ad campaign like he became. How often do you see a gold? Well, first off, How often do you see anybody from the NHL in the national ad campaign in the United States? This is where we make fun of the NHL because it's not exactly You know, everybody's favorite sport in this country. It's a niche sport. Really. But how often would you see a goalie As a spokesman getting national TV commercials she became AH, face for the League of the Winter Classic. The Olympics. The success of the sabers, American born goalie? Yeah, I got to get all the stuff in his story. I think that's why I said I I think there is an under appreciation of how good he was. Yeah, they had good teams. Those those were talented players Look.
