"This is NPR tonight. With Kevin pranks, Andrew hopper. You gotta keep them separated. Let's get back into it. When it comes to the NFL divisional round this weekend. It is the final game of weekend very excited to see it, obviously with Philadelphia going into New Orleans against the saints from NBC Philly Davidson angora on tonight, you'll harbor Kevin. And Dave, how are you? Search very good talk to you. I'm good are we're doing. All right. This is the game. This is the game. That intrigues me the most this weekend. It does I know that the colts and chiefs have a lot of attention onto because Mahomes and luck. But I'm looking at this game right now in the way, Philadelphia's wrong with Nick foles. It is not that unlikely that they go into New Orleans and be drew Brees the saints. I just want know day. What's the buzz like with this game this weekend? Yeah. You know, the people who are really excited right now. It's funny because you'd think a team that lost forty eight to seventy last time these two guys two teams played you would think they don't really have much of a chance, but that's not the way evil screens. We're looking at it. That's not the way to you are looking at it. I mean, they think they're completely different team than the one that got blown out in November. And they're probably right. I mean, the eagles have certainly caught fire recently. They've won their last four games over some pretty good teams. My new I mean, it'd be the Rams the Texans. And then the bears last week in the first round of the playoffs. So yeah, they're playing really well right now, I'm the same. I'm not thrilled to see this team. Come to the Superdome. They probably would have preferred planning what else when you look at that that forty eight seven loss at they had earlier in the year. And obviously Carson Wentz in the game. How do they mentally overcome that? And they're going right back to the to the Superdome to do this. Yeah. I mean, I don't think it's anything the mentally overcome. I if anything it's gonna fuel them more the mental side of it for me is that. Yeah, they're they're gonna want a little bit of revenge. But they have to temper that they can't go out thinking about that game. Because there are people in that locker kinda feel like Sean Payton ran out the score a little bit at their expense and hand it didn't sit. Well, they just can't let that consume that they have to realize that they can use it as fuel they use it as motivation. But that can't be the reason ramped up for this game. It can't be the only thing you're thinking about they've gotta go. They've got to play a pretty perfect game. If they're gonna beat this saints team at the Superdome. But I think it does give them some motivation. And I'm wondering if the saints aren't so happy they ran out the score in the last game because it does give a little bit of extra juice to the eagles missile does. And especially when you talk about a guy like Nick foles, you don't want to give him any more than you. Absolutely. Required to is there a quarterback controversy in Philly. Dave. I don't think. So I mean, there is what's fans for sure I mean. And of course, there is because Nick foles a legend here. He's going to go down as an all time. Great Philadelphian rightfully so he led the team they're Super Bowl last year. And he got in there this year, and they played really well. I still think you would take something pretty monumental for them to change courses. And by that. I mean, if they win another Super Bowl, I think maybe they have to think about it. Not just because Nicole is then won two Super Bowls. But because I don't know how you can put that much pressure on Carson one taking over for a guy to stupid holders already enough pressure on him as it is. So barring mad eventually they're going to go back to Carson Wentz. He's their guy. They drafted him. Number two overall. He had an MVP caliber season just a year ago. And this year he played pretty well considering the circumstances coming back from the SEAL then playing through a back injury. That was a a stress fracture. It's a it's a tricky situation. It's I guess it's a good problem to have when you have to really good quarterbacks. It's a situation. A lot of other teams would envy, but it is a little tricky. It's it's tough to navigate other thing. That's made a little easier in the city is that Carson Wentz. Nick foles are legitimately good friends. So it's eased any tension. You would assume there would be it hasn't really been like that. I get a lot of credit. The Carson Wentz because it's gotta be tough on him. But by all accounts and the players I've talked to he's been really engaged. He's been rooting for Nick. He can he hasn't turned sour on this. And and I give him credit for that. Because I don't know if I could do that. I mean, we've talked a ton about this whole thing of, you know, the pressure on Carson Wentz just based on the one and you brought it up Nick foles were to end up leading this team may have been around Philadelphia enough to say if I'm Carson, I'm going, you know, this may not be the place, you know, because just one championships not gonna do it to you got to do this to me, Nick come on. Yeah. It'd be really tough here already has a ton of crusher on. And I just can't even imagine the level that it would be. 'cause they would have to basically say no, sorry, Nick, thanks for everything. But Carson Sar guy, which is what they've said all along. But I mean to to parades might change that it's just I'm curious. I mean. I feel bad for Carson Wentz. Because I don't know what he's going to have to do to win that that fan base. Like, you said among the fan base that quarterback controversy because you said Nick foles legend in Philly, my partner Kevin Franson played in Philadelphia. He knows what that fan base is like they love grinders love guys like Nick foles. So what is it going to take besides the Super Bowl for a guy? Like Carson Wentz to win over this fan base once and if Nick foles departs, yeah, it's not gonna be easy. Because I mean this city loves the backup quarterback when the backup quarterback isn't when it's Super Bowl. So now because he's not choking. I mean, this city has gone through, you know, Jeff Garcia, and and tied that have Cory Detmar and AJ all these quarterbacks who weren't very good fan. So in love with them. So now have a backup quarterback who's a homegrown talent. Who has just of you know? Movie made the axe story. It's it's incredible. What Nicole has gone through? So he's he's a superhero here. What would it take for Carson Wentz, actually? I think that. Talent. I think he has the capability to win MVP's in this week. So it's gonna take that it's gonna take him fulfilling that level of talent. I don't think Nick foles is ever going to that level of talent who can be good for that long. Long enough to be the most valuable player in the league. And I think Carson Wentz has that capability. He's got to do that. He's gotta be what he was in two thousand seventeen when I mean, I think it was pretty clear he was going to win the MVP if he just stayed healthy for those last three games he has to get back to that anything short of that. And he's probably never going to live up to live up to your expectations and and get out of Nicole shadow. I don't wanna put it on him. Like he is Andrew luck. But there's a lot of similarity when they play in in not a recklessness. But they they're big enough there fast enough athletic enough to get outside the pocket and makes them some things happen. But at the same time, the injuries pile up, and and we've seen that last couple of years, and I'm wondering how much this next offseason. More than what goes on right now. Are they going to try to protect him and try to make sure that hey luck only got hit X amount of times this year after being drilled for years and having to take a year off basically because of his shoulder is that going to be a part of the plan. You think well, it's kind of been a part of the plan. I mean, they since they drafted Carson land stays kind of stress the importance of protecting himself, and you know. And learning one to take the risk and when did not take the risk and he's learned a little bit. I mean, I don't think he's as reckless as he was. But it's such a fine line because that's what makes him a spout player him. Is not just to run or to scramble what his ability to make plays on the run. So his throwing when he rolls out is I mean, that's that's what makes him such a special player is that ability to throw on the run and to get out of the pocket and make things happen. So you can't take that away from them. But you just have to hope these he's a little more careful and even last year. I don't think the coaching staff was even bothered when he got his ACL torn he was diving into the end zone. Yeah. But it was a big game. I mean Abbas the game that might have ended up being for home field advantage. They won the NFC east by winning that game. So even in a situation like that. It's hard to fault him for that. He's trying to make a big play in a huge game. It's just the other ones that bothered them. You know, the ones where you don't need an extra yard in the middle of the field. Just go out of bounds. And I I think he's learned a little bit. I had to do that just a tad better. Yummy. Speaking about protecting the quarterback that offense of line has improved quite a bit since that week eleven loss to the saints that we're talking about I want to get your thoughts on that match up the offensive line for Philly against the the front for New Orleans and specifically the matchup but lane Johnson against Cameron, Jordan. Yeah. The offensive line to me. And I wrote about this this week. I understand everyone wants to give the credit the next holes and to the secondary. And all these different aspects of the team that have improved. But to me it all starts with the offensive line. There are the key to this whole thing, and they're really supposed to be the strength of the entire team. And they weren't earlier this year. And I think a lot of that was because of the injuries they had pretty much across the board. Jason Peters coming back from ACL. And he had a detour by says he had a groin strain left guard Isaac say Abu, he injures pack. Jason Kelsey had a knee injury earlier in the year. Brandon Brooks has been healthier right guard lane Johnson had I an MC L spring and a high ankle sprain. So I don't think these guys have gotten better as much as healthy and with that. Yeah. They've been really good unit over the last few weeks. Lean Johnson should be fine against Cam. Jordan is a really good pass rusher. I don't wanna take anything away from him. The lane Johnson already shut down JJ watt. Ryan Carey in Khalil Mack. Kendra is not as good as Khalil Mack. He's not as good as JJ watt. So all right lane. Johnson can't afford to think that way, but I can. And I don't think you'll have any problem with Sam, Jordan. Are they going to change up anything as far as offenses scheme? I mean, you talked about it last week. They held cluele MAC. They made sure that he didn't get to to Nick foles. I mean, are they going to do anything? Grammatically you think this week even against this team? It's not even close to what the bears are. But there's still some challenges. I think they're going to try to establish the run in this game a little bit. You know, the statistically good run defense and a poor pass defense..

"Continue with Kevin pranks it hotter. Back into the NFL conversation. Joining us now twelve year NFL veteran can catch him on the NFL network. The right Brian Baldinger joining us on kmby arts, and our drew Hoffer. Kevin Franson getting ready for week three in the league, Brian. How are you, sir? Could you to join us? Well, thank you, drew. Kevin. It's going to be with you. I'm getting ready for week three here and. You know, we we got to try to figure out what direction. This thing is gold. Your pets from home can continue to just like two scoreboard up like a pinball machine. A bunch of other things going on Brian. I know we cover the Niners. But I feel like the chiefs in Mahomes and what they're doing is insane. And so I want to ask you, this is it more how many weapons he has an anti recalling. Maybe a different set of place or is it just seriously having Patrick Mahomes back there and his arm talent being able to get it to these guys more than anything. Well, it's a combination. I mean, both both both parts of that statement, our correct, I do big twelve games every Saturday, ideal pets homes games luggage. When he was there. He areas scored fifty points every week. Chance and he did score fifty games Oklahoma and Oklahoma with score sixty two. So it came out of lose again a lot of games, but he had he had that mentality of striking from anywhere on the field. Now, you know, if you go back you watch last week game. I mean, there's a play. Well, Pittsburgh just completely surrounds. Travis. Kelsey in the red show five guys. We're all looking at him. You know, Chris Connelly pops open and touch Mahomes. Does force it to a tight end takes the to open receivers Connie scores. One six touchdown throws. Tyreek hill is just the fastest player in the league. So Andy Reid is tinkering right now. Somewhere with probably have count of hogging dos. And he's throwing up plays right now for Patrick, and so it's a combination. They've got great talent. And nobody has even talked about the running back yet this year, but it did lead the league in Washington factor. So but the homes has supreme talent. And he's very competent what he's doing. You know, I was watching that game over the weekend, Brian, and there's he's so special when there's like you were mentioning the Kelsey play. And there's also one thing I think it was the Watkins where you've just missed deepen. I wonder if it's him just being a little bit antsy and a rookie when he sees that opening like, the Kelsey there's a little bit of pressure there at the end, but just to get that ball out because he just can't believe he's wide open is do you see that the little rookie jitters with Mahomes, even those performing so well so far? No, I don't I. I mean, I see him stay even last year in week seventeen against Denver or. Or take a hit. You know, the way in Texas Tech, the balls out so fast, he didn't take many hits. But I see him stay in there. And you'll take the ball from the centre play action back to the defense moves to safeties with this is a mess. I seem to you know, pretty pretty. Up next level type things. Right now. I know I I'm sure he's not gonna stay on this pace. But at the same time, I don't think that he's just gonna go south at some point during the year and people want to say, well, wait till they get tape on which it. Well, they won on that arms are going to change. And unless the guys start getting hurt and Kansas City. The town is still going to be there, Brian when you look at it, though, do you see Andy Reid it all pulling back a little bit to make sure that he keeps him on the right path or do you just say because he's going so well right now, let this thing roll out as much as he can. No, I don't see Andy Reid pulling back. I think Andy Reid is is in a position where the defense is it very good. They're going to give up a lot of points. He knows he's probably got a score close to thirty chance. Most weeks. It's like college all over again. Well, it is what I'm talking about. Carson Wentz on Sunday about the college game is is in the NFL game and offense defensively. And so came from the college game to spread offense came from college games, the tempo came from the college game the bubble screens so much of that has come from the college game. And we're all going to get more of it because we can only take with the college game gives us. So you're going to get Patrick Mahomes who never took a snap from center at Texas Tech. And you're going to have to teach them some of these other things, but that's the talent in this league right now, it's it's good young talent fresh from the college game in the end the game resembles the college game a lot of which twelve year NFL veteran with the NFL network. Brian Baldinger kind of the join us here on are tonight. Get ready for week three of the NFL Jimmy Garoppolo Brian. What have you seen from Jimmy the first two weeks? Well, it was in Minnesota. I did that first game for national radio. And I know people want to look at the interceptions. But yeah, it'd be good. If if Kendrick born was in the right place. I'm not Mitch excuses. I thought you was highly competitive I mean after Moore's fumbles at the one that game could have gone either way to start to star lineman. He loses his one receiver, you know in the first quarter. I mean, there's a lot of things that he's never going to complain about ever. But I think he's playing well I thought he played well last week against the Troy. I think he sees the field. Well, the only thing I would say, and this may be an issue going forward you. He does have trouble like a lot of quarterbacks with pressure right in his face and trying to get it over the trees or around the old tree. I think you know, a lotta guys I think he could probably reset a couple of times when he gets that pressure there rather than just trying to make the throws sometimes Brown when you look at this this forty Niners offense in obviously tailed two weeks. I think with going up against two different types of defenses and really Minnesota being loaded with so much talent and speed and all that stuff with that being said the Niners in the red zone against the lions had some very creative plays and. To me everything was kind of vanilla against Minnesota. Is it is it hard to bring out all the stops out on the first week. Or is it one of those things where you see the adjustments made from week to week on that well that play action pass to sell. It was great. I was fantastic. I mean it caught Detroit flat-footed. Interesting though that play because Kyle is a master at this in. What is it? I don't know if I can explain clearly over the phone but all defenses react in a pattern trained to react to the pattern. So you you you you we I like the play action fake or hand off to the back. And then you just cut it short and snap it. And the defense is reacting to either the reverse action to the bat or and that's the path to take it all of a sudden, Pam. You get the pattern. And then you break the patterns, and Kyle Sean McVay just masters at seeing you. Defense is reacting to move 'em calendar. And that play action pass. I put it out there on on Twitter this week because I can't wait to see the post team for copy of because it's going to be a copy because it is a great play action. You know, this even last week most of the big pass plays on first out and they're all play action. That's when the big plays come because then if it doesn't work you still got to other towns where you can make the first down, but they're big plays. Come occurs down. It's big place. It had in that game. I down place, and that's not going to change in that that throws Celik was was fantastic. The the creativity obviously in the mind of cow Shanahan. We talk about a lot Brian on this show and how and what a great play caller. He is when you look at Jimmy Garoppolo from last week and how he was holding on the ball seven seconds four seconds, which at sometimes can seem like an eternity. Do you think because of the complex playbook that there is an element of overthinking with this offense view it? It's hard to say hold it too long show. I like to see him. Marquees? Field. So. Just don't have anybody that has that kind of speed out there right now. Dante Patterson many can't run like that. But you're going to the bottom line is even with the six sacks in the hits. I mean, put up thirty points. If you're putting up thirty points in this league. I don't care you're playing against thirty points. You're going to win. Most Sundays you're gonna win probably ten or eleven games if you could score thirty points game. And that's the bottom line is they put the points up your place, they even with the negative plays like everybody wants them. But then how do you overcome even with all the negative plays? They had. You know? I mean, they still were able to toll for they ran the ball really well that that's kind of compensate for for a little bit. You know? And so sometimes give up. But then you know, you you compensate with the big ones that map read hat. I was wondering about one thing in in you being former offensive lineman for years. Mike mcglinchey? And I don't know if you break down each position on this whole thing, I watch all your stuff you break down. Just the plays in general. I don't know if you specifically go for the offense alignment just on your own. Have you noticed how? Well, he's playing or if you know to me on the runs there aren't a lot to that right side or through the right side or somewhere where he's making a big block. Well, you know, the first week you had to go to play right guard like arts and he's playing the game. I I'm pretty sure that throughout. Ever since that. He was put at right tackle opposite. Joe staley. I'm pretty sure you take any steps to right guard. He goes and he plays right Gordon that game. So I mean, just versatility alone knows or die. Otherwise, there's no way that they would do that. But you know. That's that's one. And number two. He's got a good attitude. He's got good energy to. He's basically Joe Staley little brother at this point. You know, learning curfew from play left tackle at Notre Dame coming out of highschool Filadelfia. At this next step. You almost you talk to the great pass protection to this week. Most of them have a book on the guys that they face. So he's seen these guys all for the first time moves it doesn't seem practice. I'd say early returns a Mike mcglinchey favorable at this point. I I thought he struggled in the third preseason game. I thought he played better in the first game against the Vikings. It gets fun. And then last week. I thought he step up. Brian. I want to go around the league for the couple more minutes that we do have you sticking with the quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick in the buccaneers if he can beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, they have to they have to start thinking about moving with Ryan forward. Right. I mean, look at look at the the Sean Jackson how he's spoken out about having been spat his quarterback to me. Brian just seems everybody around Ryan Fitzpatrick like playing with Fitzpatrick better than Winston. Well, I don't know that I don't know that you know, there's that time of pulse. I I know this decision. I believe is already been made. It hasn't been announced. But I think the decision's made their camp on Sunday. And I saw up the eagles. And I I played actions always to the fourth quarter. I mean, he was he was outstanding. And there was a stretch in the third quarter. The eagles are trying to make it a game. He completed six straight past including your touchdown the interim Dodd. Nobody would have thought or said throughout the all season or summer that the the Tampa Bay bucks in your set the best receiving core football. But they might you could save the Rams or you can say some teams out there. The Vikings course out there. But right now the way there's much downs. Say that Mike Gavin, Sean Jackson. I gobble not Howard. I mean, these guys I this is the best group and best. It's it's Ryan Fitzpatrick. So I I don't believe for one second regards. What happens if Pittsburgh that Janus Winston is going.
