"So for me a couple of ones that I really enjoyed But for me the one that's always probably going to be the best until they went to super bowl is The win over the packers in the NFC championship in Two Thousand Sixteen Because that was actually my birthday and yeah it was it was pretty late are watching it And I remember the second half. I'd watch it later because they were just doing so well In everyone there I guess figured out it was my birth is so the whole crowd kept me shots and I want to be rude. You know so Haganah shots and then I don't remember the second half of the game but I did watch later and of course the second half was good as well but that game was just so much fun. It was just total domination. And then when Julio did his famous just pushing over two corners on route to the end zone it was craziness so that was that was definitely the most gratifying went for me. I think to there was a redemptive element for the two thousand ten shellacking when Green Bay came in Aaron Rodgers. Linda Sup. And I think. A lot of falcons fans loved the fact that he was able to come back in. And we repaid the favour almost twice over like at least the Falcons scored in that game against Green Bay. Back in two thousand ten like Green Bay got on the scoreboard until the Falcons are up thirty five. Nothing while Yeah. It was crazy it was it was domination all right. We're going to close out low bit darker but I think that's the experience of a falcons fan doesn't on a dark now. It was dark. Know How hard did that Super Bowl loss? The twenty eight to three infamous super bowl loss hit you and you know we look back. Is there anyone that you can blame too? You know what is what was your process like after that game. I mean it was is was devastating. I was very upset in. It's funny because I'm like never angry or or loud like that. Generally I was very upset. It was like she like scary for life that before. I don't think I've ever really been like that since then But it was just so frustrating and take a walk you know and it was. It was bad as bad times. But you know I've gotten over it and it's something that you you deal with as a sports fan like sign up for the heartbreak you sign up for the glory and you don't. You're going to get the heartbreak a lot. More often than they're going to get the glory so You know that's your warning folks if you get off the ship now if you can but it was tough. It was tough but like in terms of blame. I mean it was definitely a collective effort but I know a lot of people blame the defense for leading the Patriots back again but we have to keep in mind that they played over one hundred snaps which is absurd it was really a perfect storm of like reasons why the defense was on the field so much and you know. I think at the end of the day you probably a place most the blame on Kyle Shanahan in where we saw this again in his most recent super bowl appearance said he just doesn't know when to take his foot off the gas in our the like secure the lead so. I think he deserves the most blame but of course Quin deserves. Blame for not has the final say he could have overridden things. Obviously I missed is blocked. So that's not great either but it was a collective loss I think you know I I if I wanted to come back to Atlanta today. I'd say Hell. Yeah you know. I don't hold a grudge against him. I mean a lot of people seem to hate Freeman after. He misstep that block but I mean come on trimmer. Didn't WanNa miss the block guys like come on. It's it was just rough. It's rough everyone but it was a collective loss but Casiano. You should know better that you would think you would alert before his most recent civil but in. Yeah it's I think there's some fans that found the most recent super bowl therapeutic as well. Let's just say Oh look didn't learn his lessons. Yup I wasn't in that boat necessarily but it was. There was an element of Oh. Wow like it. He really didn't Figure this out in the meantime it. I like to remind people because I feel like this gets overlooked a lot. But in that Game Ryan schrader got injured. Did Not play the second half and I think people forget that Alex was playing on a lag. Working leg is no sanity how that's possible. I think he was. He must literally have like channeled. Hulkamania or something asking her not be damaged like exactly living off of adrenaline. But I think people forget that when in the processing that loss You know two key pieces of our offensive line were were down and anyhow not to drag out on we were a now need a drink which will do after all right final question in wrap up this interview. Thank you again for doing this. Kevin courtroom your thoughts on the current regime. Let me not from top down Arthur blank. All the way down to the janitor who cleans up after the players are done with the game the other Russia. Exactly the way your thoughts on this current regime and your hoax for what will hopefully be twenty twenty season if everything goes right. Yeah I mean. I've been on record as being pretty pessimistic about this season. I think that the time to make a change was last year. And now Arthur blank. I think has run this team pretty well but I think he's not running it particularly with regards to Dan Quinn. That they can't really make up his mind about whether he wants him to stay go. Obviously he wants him to stay. He's willing to basically bend over backwards to help. Quinn stay here But I mean for the most part I think Arthur blank is a good owner and owners are not perfect. They'RE GONNA make mistakes but I think we I think the teams in good hands with other blanket. The hunt for the most part. But I just don't know with Quinn and I really don't know Dirk Cutter. I think that was the Big One. I think. I think you could make make an argument for keeping Quinn because the players love him but I just don't know how you can make argument for Dirk Cutter and it just hit his scheme. It just hasn't evolved at all since he was last year It's it's just played out and it puts so much stress in the offensive line when the Falcons have a really young offensive line. That isn't particularly good. Impasse pro cutter. Can't call run game to take the pressure off. It's allowed along developing stuff like it's still productive. I mean the Falcons still score points but like I think any offense coordinator could score points with this offense so exactly a ringing -dorsements but I really hope that they That they they get another modern offensive. Mind in here someone who's going to mix it up run a more balanced attack more play action all that stuff going forward but in terms of hope for twenty twenty. I mean they can still make the playoffs even with this coaching staff. Because honestly the roster isn't that bad like especially the offensive side of the ball players. Obviously it's it's a little bit of a open question. They're going to do with hers and how he's going to assimilate and you know. How MUCH DOES ALEX? Mack have left in the tank. Can those two offensive linemen in their second year? Can they really improve business questions? There the offense still be good and then you know we did get Dante Fowler in here so that does add something to the pass rush. But they've only got six draft picks now It's GONNA be tough to fill holes with that especially td doesn't trade back. So I don't have tremendous hopes. I think they're probably GONNA end up in Canada. The the area they were last year in that seventy. Nine range flip. A playoff run is not out of the question especially now that they have seven teams of nine and seventeen could easily make at that point. So they're in the mix and there's always the chance that they can come together and play better than we expect like twenty sixteen for example. Not Too for that matter But I'm not terribly terribly confident that they do that but I always would like the team to do well. I know some some people simultaneously. Think that we're too positive. And two negative about the Falcons so I would like them to do well but I just don't really see it happening with cutter as the offense coordinator. So we'll see yeah. I think we're in the same boat and and you know Hopefully with everything going on in the world we will get the opportunity to see the NFL season in two thousand twenty. So for those of you listening please keep your distance socially six-speed or more a stay at home as much as possible so we can get through this crisis in back to the NFL season. We want to see them so. Nfl season happen. But we have to be a safe and healthy. I so we wish that for all of you guys listening into Kevin. Before we close out. Why don't you tell our listeners? What you've got going on where they can find you. Yes I am on twitter at Alchoholic Kevin. You guys know my stuff is all over the site. The the show effect garlic live is on twitter at Duck. Hawk live and then our youtube channel. Which is the Falcons on Youtube? That's where the shows go live pretty easy to find and then in terms of content. Got Come in tomorrow. I'm looking at Which would be Tuesday? I'm looking at Whether they still need to consider drafting running back with the addition of Todd Gurley And then Wednesday got the next mock draft the pen ultimate edition of the Mafia Seemed to get less. Accurate if history's any indication as closer to the draft. So we'll we'll see how that goes but that's GonNa be a fun one. It's a little bit different. Obviously the picks at sixteen are starting to get a little predictable. Because we kind of know. Or the Falcons are heading especially with free agency but the rest of the draft is open ended. Ando it's it's an interesting one so check that on sick. Absolutely ask for me guys. You can find me on twitter at Alchoholic. Feta here on the alcohol. Podcasts also follows at Alchoholic.

"So I'll go with the victor As well yeah. I think it was the right city for Vic as well because he was very much representative of Atlanta in what has become the at l. And I think that a in many ways Julio has also sort of taken up that mantle as as a current player trae young with the Hawks I think is taking up that mantle. It's the dynamic players that city really clings to in a dion sanders back in the day. A great example so fantastic pick but you just mentioned it. I'm GonNa let you answer it before we go to a break. Who is your favorite current player in? Why for me? It's hilly Julio's is my guy on several. Julio Jerseys Justin. He's just the consummate professional it like. He's such a great player. A tremendous talent. You know couldn't find a nicer guy on or off. The field couldn't find a more professional player. He just checks all the boxes. He's that really rare player in all facets and yet I mean it's just been so much fun to watch him in his prime and see what he does and I'll never forget you know so of his crazy plays and I think he will go down in history knows. Potentially the the greatest or one of the greatest why receivers all-time Falcons obviously but I think by the time has cruiser. We could be looking 'em as as the owner of most of the NFL receiving records. So it's it's just been really fun to be able to watch him getting to meet him. The locker of now that I have credentials has been just saying you know to see one of your your heroes like that. And now he's Super Nice by the way he's Nice Guy. Yeah and quite humble given his incredible talents and not prone to being kicked off his team. We won't touch that. We ought touched. You know what we're talking about. You can't be the greatest receiver in the League when you aren't in the League anyhow before we get into the rest of the questions with Kevin. We're GONNA take a quick break. We'll be right back. We're back on the alcohol podcast. This is David Walker comb. Edw I am with Kevin Night in our next part of our getting to know the writer series over at the faculty come. We're talking about his life. Experience of being a falcons fan than someone that follows. The team writes about this team drinks. Because of this team so back to the questions Kevin Lee. Hit You with this. We talked about Mike Vick being your time. Favorite player Julio being your your current favorite player. Let's let's make that the top three so if you're GONNA put three names All-time the three players Falcons that you would put posters on your wall as Teenage Kevin You're those three names. Yeah I mean we talked about Vic and Julio and then I think I would add Matt Ryan in there as well and not necessarily any particular order. I think they're all tremendous But Yeah I mean I talked about. Vic and Julio Sofa Ryan I mean Ryan is just the best quarterback that this team has ever had truly underrated by the fan base by the NFL by everyone. We're not I think there's a a large such fan base that isn't going to realize what they lost until he's gone. You know we just have to enjoy what's probably going to be. The Best Era Falcons football that we may ever see. Hopefully they'll continue to be good after this but The Matt Ryan Era is is has been unprecedented for the team and just watching them go out there and sling it and just. He's also just the consummate professional. You Know He. He's a great player on and off the field. A leader and that twenty six CDs season. I mean that was just special true. Mvp player in if he had won that super he would be considered he would be. Talked about is one of the best quarterbacks in the league like every year but the super bowl tax you know if you don't get it and nobody cares and if you're in it than everyone thinks you're great but To me I mean Matt Ryan has been a top five quarterback since arguably fifteen. I mean maybe even earlier than that And some SA- bad seasons by the team around hasn't changed that my pin so he's just tremendous yet he has been saddled with some really really bad defenses over these so many in for him to to have as many fourth quarter comebacks as he has had in his career just speaks to how much he had to repeatedly put this team on his shoulders in critical moments in come through So I'm with you. I love him I want the entire fan base to embrace him. Even though it's not happening but Fantastic pick you'll get no arguments from me on all three of those guys. I love all three of them. are a little bit of a different tact here. Because we've talked about the players. I have argued in have done so with the other Writers Interviewed Afar. That the Falcons have had a very unique sort of selection of coaches. That have come through over the years from Dan Reeves. Jim Mora to he who shall not be named Obviously Dan Quinn. Now Mike Smith who arguably helps stabilize the team. There have been some very very interesting in different personality. Coaches of all the ones that you are familiar with who is your favorite doesn't even have to necessarily be the most successful as the example. James Listed Jim Mora as one of his favorites which was a surprise to me. So who is one of your favorite coaches? Who has taken on the Falcons? Or I'm sorry. Coach the Falcons your time watching? Yeah I mean honestly like I. I do really like Dan Quinn And that's why it's been so difficult for me to kind of go by show and in rail against and say like you know you probably deserve to be fired because I like him so much as a person and as motivator down And honestly a lot of people say oh twenty sixty was all kyle Shanahan. But it's not you can't be that reductive. Like twenty team was staff that they had. They all made it happen together. And you know I am not GonNa Forget that like. I still appreciate quit for that. Even though he's he has his shortcomings. So I think Quinn really modernize the team for lack of a better word He took them into a more modern philosophy. And were player. Focused Philosophy You know he early in his tenure. He was always playing. The young guys always bringing in new guys in and they were just a really young exciting team. And I think it's possible they could get back to that But you know I it's. It's been difficult with him at the helm the last few years and I don't know if he's I don't know if he's going to be able to fix all the issues that that he has but if anyone can do it. I think he has a chance. Because we've seen that when it's working it can work really well for you can get very strength when you have a streaky coach like that you can get a two thousand sixteen and if you can get one twenty six you could get another two thousand sixteen so we'll just have to hope that they can. They can get hot again in and make this work but You know regardless of his record. I really enjoyed having him as the coach He. He's a fun coach. I think the players really do love him. That's the only reason that he's here. So yeah it's tough. Because having seen him in person you can tell he's the real deal so I do despite a Like what you're saying. It's sometimes it's tough to have to criticize him in. He has deserved criticism. But I do want to see him succeed. So hundred percent with you there a back some players. Obviously there are players who for weather burris. Never get the respect. They deserve in vice versa. Where we have a especially oh my goodness especially during the offseason during camp. And you're like why isn't this guy's starter in the NFL? He should be playing over. Julio and you're like Oh my God So in your mind let's start with the first. Who is one of the? Most underrated Falcons through the years that you think maybe fans didn't appreciate him the way it should have currently are appreciating him the way it should have that you think is just leaps imbalanced. Better than the average estimate of him. I think one of the biggest scapegoats that we saw who is of course no longer with team as a few weeks ago was desert truthful on who was an elite corner at times during his his seasons with the Falcons in Playing on a lot of really bad defense is with really bad. Pass rushes he got. You know. Beat a lot ED. Every quarter that played with the Falcons beat a lot. But I don't think it really had much to do with true for not being talented. I think it has to do with the fact that you can't cover that long. It coverage pass rush after work in tandem when once now working the other one sucks so I think she is a much better player than he was given credit for he had some had some struggles in the last few years because of injury and other things like that. But I think he's going to bounce back with his new team I think he's still gonNA play at a pretty high level and honestly I think it was a mistake for the Falcons to let them walk this year and they're gonNA have a hard time finding another cornerback one As a harder time than people think to replace just a true funds. Yep hundred percent with you there we you and I have talked about that before that He is inexplicably been hated on at times by the fans. And I've never understood it. All right flip side. Who is a player that may or may not be the same? But do you think was overrated? Where fans were just like pounding the table for him. You're watching him going. What do you guys see? I'm not seeing her. Yeah I mean the obvious one that. I'm sure other people have touched on those like Harry. Douglas back after he had down there was the set. I don't think it was Georgia people. But there is dissected. The Fan base that was like. Oh who needs Julio when we have a thousand year old Harry Douglas and like that's to me because Siri Douglas is fine. Wide Receiver But like people were talking about like he was this great receiver. And it's like no no. He wasn't so starring Harry if he happened to listen to this. I know he listened. He reads stuff but he's a good guy he gets. You beleaguered guy. He's a good three but that's that's what he is there. Shame in that. There's only a handful of people in the world that could say there are good water. Yeah I can't hit on too much. Because he went to Nine High. We went to the same high school. Okay Yeah I WANNA ask you to get to wade into that one. Yeah I'm I'm I'm GonNa leave it alone Harry. If if you are listening I love you. Man This may be easy but I've actually gotten some different answers for this and I'm very curious to say. What is the most gratifying win for this team that you personally experienced.

"Hollick live he was one of our editors and a resident draft expert at the site. You've probably seen a ton of his content in recent weeks at the alcoholic dot com. He has done a bang-up job there. I am talking about the one and only Kevin Night Kevin. Thanks for doing this fan. Absolutely thanks for having me on that cool idea. I've been enjoying listened to him as well so excellent. I'm I think it's going to be good for our listeners. To get to know everyone during the offseason the no were coming from fans and I. I think it helps to know that we are fans. We're not just willy. Nilly writing about the Falcons we WANNA torture ourselves. We write about them because we torture ourselves watching them as fans exactly. Yeah so On that note. Why don't we start right there? what made you a Falcons fan? And when did that happen? Give us the background of what brought you into this madness. Yes so initially. It was kind of a mix of geography me. Being a fan of birds of prey as a child so the Falcon Mascot was a big thing for me and then the color scheme Black and red was has been my thing my whole life so those those are the three things that initially got me in. Yeah I lived in northwest Florida Wells grownup which is central time Florida. By the way. That's actually Atlanta is actually the closest team in terms of distance to Where I live so guess maybe New Orleans slightly closer but that was not an option. So yeah that was. That was how I initially got into it. I had family in Atlanta too. So it just kinda makes sense but when I really started seriously following the team that was The Mike Vick era where he was just the most exciting football player. I ever seen Let me know had really seen anyone like it before. And he just was so exciting So once Vick was on the team that's actually started like watching the Games every Sunday. Yeah fantastic era to join the falcons in both fantastic and at times grueling which is not any different than what it is right now is pretty much. Every year. With the Falcons right. So as Falcons Fan. You're going back now probably two decades. What is one of your earliest memories fond or otherwise of watching this team? Yeah I think my favorite memory from the early days was vicks like crazy. Run against man I came. I think it was the vikings. They use playing against out his his one crazy run that he did or he just waited. Like ten guys ran that touchdown in that. That was like one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Still and that was that was really awesome and badges baby so proud to be a faculty fan when when they were just really clicking on all cylinders back in that era. Yeah that's it's funny. You know when you think about this team and Some of the very frustrating years have been there actually been. I would argue a lot of great years a lot of really fun years for this team. I think that's what has kept. Many of US still rooting for him. Is that we do get occasional glimpses of success that are at times you know incredible you. Mike Vick. Two Thousand and four is is an example of that so It's one thing I think to be fan insecure of this team into develop a drinking problem from that. I think it's another thing to choose to write about them. So when did you start? Writing about the falcons. And what drew you to to that to write about this team on a daily weekly basis? Yes so the first thing I wrote was actually a it was a fan post on the site. Colic DOT COM. I think it was twenty thirteen You know doing like a rust prediction for two thousand thirteen and it. Was you know everyone had so much? Hope coming off twenty twelve so I was also hopeful. Obviously that was a disaster but So that was the first thing I actually wrote. And I remember sending an email to Dave Joe asking him for advice about how to get started and he was very helpful courses. Digits Nice and then after that I wrote for this. Little site called the runner sports and they gave me. My first platform is very small but they were super laid back and just you know. Hey right whatever you want so. That was the first kind of gagged I had and then after that I went to blogging dirty For two years and I was there with a lot of other writers that have now joined the Hollick like odd on and Eric. I mean yeah. It was a lot of people ended up coming over from there and Blind dirty was the first place right. Think like a lot of people actually read my stuff. And then I famously joined the Alcoholic Right before the twenty sixteen season And God to be part of the team for that magical season that was. That was still the most fun I've had covering this so we wish I could get back to that at some point. But you know just remember. I was the Good Luck. Charm that year that we'll keep that in mind. It's funny as a little side note I would say that was Those two or three years were some of the best from what we saw out of that site. Album blogging dirty in. I actually had a link to them years ago when they They tried to hire beyond his editor. Which didn't happen. Because the the person who was trying to recruit me referred to me as Mr DC instead of the W so there was a period of time are writers. Chat where I was being called DC on a regular basis as a running joke from the blogging dirty person who tried to address so any writing about the team for the past six seven years. Obviously this is true for Dave. It's true for me. It's review we all end up with some takes that are Kind of bad in the. What's one that you look back on in hindsight newly? Oh Man I wish I could take that one back. Well it was funny. I remember the most like famous bad take was I was live. Tweeting combine results. And I've told the STAR before but I basically Derwin James in Alabama Safety Camera with the Alabama safeties name was but I was expecting james to run like freakish numbers because there. James is incredible so when I think he ran in like the four fours like the mid four four which is a really good number but I was like okay. That's just like a good time for him. Because I was expecting more. And then the Alabama safety ran. I thought he was gonNA run on the four five. C ended up running basically a little bit. I think it was biscuit the same derwin James Albeit at a smaller size and I was like. Oh that's a great time for him and then. Fsu twitter just unleashed the fury upon me. You Alabama homer like how dare you know there's no there's no context combines so now. I just tweet at times without commentary that's that's a good strategy for FSU twitter's bromance. You gotta be careful. I've heard that Bob him On the flip side. Because I think we've all done this where We we banged the table for a player or a prospect. That really works out. Who is someone that you think? Maybe other people didn't see or take that you you had a particularly good one in hindsight while I did correctly predict the junk. Kaminsky pick on draft day so that really. I was one of them. Yes it was maybe twenty or thirty minutes before the pit came down as like. Oh you John. Kaminsky kind of fits their profile. I wouldn't be surprised. They take him earlier because I think a lot of people considered him like a six rounder. Seventh rounder kind of late guy and I was like well. He seems type of Guy. The Falcons would take earlier than most so watch out for him as the next week and then they did take him so that was fun. Every you know throw darts eventually going right so so that was actually a good one and then Actually predicted I believe the first two picks of this drafts Like the recent draft although they weren't you know in the exact or like the edited predict trade up but I did predict Chris Lindstrom an Caleb. Mcgarry going to the Falcons in one mock drafts. Though you know that was that was my second draft picks so far. That's right. I forgot about that. You sure did. Yeah and for those who are like. Oh you know you do. Forty a mock drafts. Yeah honestly it's still pretty remarkable given the number of prospects they're coming out to nail it on the first two so Definitely kudos there. Little bit of a sidebar but something personal note Professional note otherwise that our listeners in our readers may not know about you That's interesting peculiar something about you. That may give us some insights into what influences you as a writer. Yeah I mean A couple of things that some people probably don't know For one I'm like a very active like game or I play a lot of games Alex build computers and just PC gang mostly. So that's something I enjoy does. Kinda gaming it is you know no no contest like the play air soft which is a competitive shooting. Sport Reuse replica firearms at Sheila Plastic Pellets? Everybody gets all dressed up. It's a good time good good workout. Abs. That's fun and then snow. Skiing is my other sport that I really enjoy No kidding like a set of you know on the scale of one to eight hundred seventy five on the scale of skiers so I can do just about just about everything in terms of terrain but the really hardcore stuff. I don't really mess with that yet. But that's that's a lot of fun and then. I run a de campaign playing a complaint for several years. Now I am the master of that right the story and all that so I I also enjoy writing fiction as very cool I used to do. Dnd as well when it was nice school so And also in his you know am also a PC gamer active as well. Yes I cannot stop playing division two so for those listening you can find me on division to on there. Be Any given weekday. Back to the Falcons your all time favorite player in this franchise doesn't matter who does matter the era when you think of who teenage Kevin is GonNa put on his wall as the biggest poster who is at player. Yeah I mean it's it's tough because like for me like if you're talking to teenage Kevin Like I had Mike Vick Jersey at Mike Vick poster and I was really disappointed with the dogfighting and all that You know the fact that he's kind of he's repented for what he's done and you know he he's. He's made amends and For an effort up not naming the same player twice in terms of active player at fair player. I'll go with victim. Just because I think he really revolutionized the sport he really gave mobile quarterbacks another into the league like the Dave they had chances throughout the years but vic I think was the one who kind of opened the floodgates to teams being more open to taking that type of quarterback because the NFL you know is very very conservative and slow to adopt things. I think it was just such a special player. Such a special athlete that he deceives couldn't ignore it anymore. And he really Kinda revolutionized that part of the game..

"The we built a big server farm to try to deal with web scale traffic, and at that time most of the state of the art in machine. Translation was a rule based approach where you would hire a team of linguists language experts to manually handcraft bilingual dictionaries and transformation roles that account for the reordering occur across languages and other things like morphology and so on and so it was quite. Labor intensive approach around that time, and ideas that had been introduced earlier called statistical machine translation was re popularized in nineteen ninety nine. Kevin Knight who has been at the university of southern California led a summer workshop at Johns Hopkins University where they implemented the IBM statistical machine translation models, very famous models in natural language processing of they're called like IBM model one IBM model to IBM model three IB model for which were data driven purchase that took bilingual sentence aligned parallel texts and were able to automatically align words, in the foreign sentence with words in the English sentence in than us, those as the building blocks to create a probabilistic model of how translation works, and then they had a decoding components given a model where you have a bunch of words in associated probabilities of their translations, plus other model. Defectors. Like, how many words a single foreign where should translate to when translating into English and how they should reorder those model components combined produced the overall model that than needed to give novel input sentence decode and produce an output sentence. So this approach was called statistical machine translation, and it became popular around the seal p summer workshop led by Kevin night, much had awesome. Participants like France was the head of Google machine. Translation efforts after he finished his PHD and Noah Smith who's now very famous in the field. But at the time was just undergraduate participant, one of my friends from Stanford was another undergraduate participants Michael Yar, and he showed me the final report from this thing. And I was pretty skeptical. Sounds like, but as to linguistics after I graduated and started working at a small company where we had a small budget, and you know, a small team I saw the value in being able to automatically create machine translation systems from data. And so I tried to convince my bosses at the time that we should do this ourselves instead of repackaging commercial off the shelf machine translation systems, we should do the research and build our own statistical machine translation system. So my said, no. And I decided that would be Kentucky to go off into a PHD. So moved to the university of Edinburgh and started doing research into machine translation than I even got a small grant from the Scottish government to commercialize research in statistical machine translation, which was awesome. Because at the time I was a PHD student. I had two full-time software developers, which I think is. Unusual for. Pretty awesome. That was fun because I got to lots of hands on development of machine. Translation, of course. A couple years down the line Google came along started giving away their statistical machine translation systems for free. So. Under the business proposition of that. Yeah. And then for several years statistical machine translation in its variance where the dominant approach so we had the original IBM based models, which were essentially a word based approach Justice commission. Translation, and then Phillip Conan, friends ach and several other. Researchers developed phrase based approaches to machine translation, which reused larger chunks of human translated texts and produce much higher quality output. And then we had interesting purchase to hierarchical phrase based machine translation by David Chang. And then later more sin. Tactically informed statistical machine translation. So there were many iterations of this idea of a statistical data driven approach to machine. Translation over the past few years, we've shifted from that kind of approach to. A neural network based approach. So now the current dominant approach to machine translation is called neural machine. Translation, and the idea is similar in that it's a data driven approach. But instead of having let are essentially tables of phrases, and their associated translations and probabilities, we now have a continuous space model of translation. So there's lots of really interesting research like the word toback program that you've talked about on your podcast before where you're able to build a vector space model of semantics and that same sort of vector space model of semantics is now leveraged in neural purchase machine..
