"Welcome back. We are here and taking your phone calls the second hour. Don't forget, Griff later on, David basil, coming up as well. We've already talked to Barrett's lead tomorrow live in Oxford, lane kiffin among our guests. Let's continue right now. And check out Larry in Mississippi. Hello, Larry. How are you doing, Paul? Good afternoon. Good afternoon. I want to talk to you about the old miss Alabama game. Wanting to see if you had a prediction for us. Not yet. All right, well, I'll give you one and maybe you can finish up with the prediction of your own. I'm going to go oldness 30 Alabama 27 and I think the only way we pull out the win is if oldness gets to Bryce, not only gets to them, we have to disrupt them because Bryce does a great job keeping his eyes down the field. And when he's outside of the pocket, we have to get to him. If not, I live the rebels can pull it through, but I'm going to be optimistic. They all miss 30. Alabama 27. Thank you. Daryl is up next. Good afternoon, Daryl. What's wrong, Paul? We are doing great. Thank you. So I'm on top of the world, but let me ask. So Nick Saban is known for rehabilitating coaches, right? Correct. Okay. So with that being said, I've never known Nick Saban to buy one of his offensive coordinators of defense of coordinators. Would that happen, you think? Well, I'll be honest. You have to look into his coordinators have been. He made a change fairly quickly. He had Kevin Steele as a defensive coordinator. His second year at Alabama. He elevated Kirby smart, which essentially told Kevin Steele your time is up. Most of it is coordinating. So Kirby smart spent the next ten years there are longer and then ultimately was replaced by Jeremy Pruitt. And then he left and then you've seen the rest. So the offensive side has been a little more interesting. He has pushed one or two out very quietly, but never directly an absolute firing. He got rid of somebody I mean, the guy got another job, but Saban, when Sabin brought lane kiffin in before the 2014 season, that told the person before him, I think it was nus Meyer, finds another job. Well, he got rid of Lake give it to, right? Well, he did it. He did fire lane Kevin after laying kiff and quit. But look here, Paul. Look here. I mean, them in the same coaches that were coaches. Last year when they made it to the national cobble game, right? So, I mean, the coaching hasn't changed. They're coaching the same way they've always coached. What's changed? Okay, what's different? The players, Paul, the players, the talent level. You're correct to be in, okay? You're right. The same way. Let me say this, okay? If you're at the point right now and you're with your team that you got to say, if we be so and so and so and so loses the so and so and so and so, can we still get in? You're sleep is over, okay? You're seeing it. It's freaking done. Alas, 11 months. The dogs are undefeated. Last 11 months. Alabama's got three lawsuits, okay? I mean, they're done. It's going to be Georgia. It's going to be LSU. Goodbye, Alabama. See you, Paul. Brother, cruel. I'm trying to be nice. Oh, I'm saying Daryl. Is that there are still a mathematical chance. After Saturday, there may not be a mathematical chance, and then you won't hear me say that anymore. Will is in Louisiana. Hello, will. Well, Paul, if you would have told me in August, LSU would be in the driver's seat for the SEC west. I'd probably tell you will drop I was drunk in August. This team is from starting from where they were against Florida state to now. I can't believe I'm Tom by SEC championship. To go play Georgia, this there seems to be I'm just being optimistic. I'm not looking forward to the playoffs. I'm looking forward to the sugar bowl. But I wouldn't be shocked if some ungod miracle would like what else you did back in O one with saving. Beat Georgia to make it to the college football playoff. Hey, but we'll remember something, and I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but for LSU to get to the college football playoff, they're growing, they're going to have to win out. So I wouldn't be too concerned about the playoff yet. Why am I the only person that thinks their path is difficult? The only game now. They have two SEC road games and they have to be Georgia. I don't think that's very easy to do. The only game that I'm worried about before Georgia is Texas a and M. I just think LA she fans ought to be gleeful, but you also have to be cognizant of the schedule at Arkansas at a and M and then Georgia, that's the mathematical possibility of winning all three of those is pretty slim. But two out of the three doable. Thanks for the call. Rick in Pennsylvania is up next. Good afternoon, Rick. Thank you, Paul. This is Yankee. I know, and I follow your share quite a bit. Thank you. I got a perfect coach for auburn. But I need your help. There's a bunch of people up here in State College that are willing to fight out Franklin's contract, but I need a big time auburn supporter to pay the other half and I think Franklin would be a good fit at auburn. Number one. Rick, I know what you're trying to do. What's that? You're trying to con us into taking James Franco and off your hands. Thank you. But I'm willing to. I will speak for auburn. We will not do that. You're stuck with James Franklin. No, come on, man. Former SEC. He is a very average coach. That's what he is. Thank you. Well, but here's the thing. He will at least win the games he's supposed to win, but he won't win the big time games and it sounds like at least all of our needs to help win in the games are supposed to win. Okay. Hey, thanks for the call. Appreciate it. We'll take a short break back with much, much more. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Lions, tigers, and tailgates. Oh my. "We welcome you back. It's great to have you here for the final moment or two of the program. I mentioned yesterday we were not here because we went down to Alabama to the region's tradition. It's always it's a major it's a major stop on the PGA champion tour, but our interest in it is primarily it is a rare opportunity where so many coaches converge. You had Brian Carson there who was rather quiet before and after his round Kirby smart always comes to it. He played with the CEO and chairman of regions who is a Georgia graduate Sabin has been coming since his first year and is obviously the biggest draw. Other we talked to a lot of people, we had a really fun conversation with Taylor Hicks. We'll get it on for you. They're tomorrow or sometime next week about. His struggle with rewriting the call pulse song, which you hear at the beginning of every hour. And with Texas and Oklahoma and I do apologize. I think my voice should have got fried in the, in all the pollen yesterday and it sounds like it could use a B 12 shot. So my apologies to you probably four hours later than I should have. But for some reason, it just deserted me today. We talked to the two athletic directors from auburn and Alabama Greg Byrne and Allen Allen green Allen green had some interesting comments quite frankly about the Brian situation. The difficulty of dealing with that, you may remember Brian harsen was essentially hired by Alan green over the objections of the school's biggest booster Jimmy rain who wanted Kevin Steele or a few other people and green insisted with the president's backing. That they bring in Brian Harrison and that blew up the president was showing the door. And there's a lot of speculation about green future, his contract runs out at the end of the year. And one of the questions we asked him yesterday was what does his future look like? And he made it very clear and we'll share that with you tomorrow also a fantastic conversation with John Daly. You probably have heard by now, John junior, his son, is a golfer at the university of Arkansas. And his L deal was with Hooters, that's been a long time sponsor of daily on the PGA Tour. Daley has done events at Hooters throughout the country and now his son and I believe he's the first one. There may be there may be some other ones, but he's one of the first athletes to sign a deal in NIL deal with Hooters. So that's some of that we will play tomorrow. We won't get it all on because we usually do that show live, but because of the conflict this week with the tournament, we were unable to do it. But we are done now. We've had a good show. We appreciate everybody being here again apologies about my rather terrible, terrible sounding voice. Hey, this is feel the ace from fantasy focus football following our first mock draft in advance of the 2022 season. Part of the moments that matter series presented by supercuts, the smarter, easier way to get a haircut. It's not just any haircut, it's super cut. Picks one, two, and three, when exactly how you thought they would. Taylor McCaffrey Eckler. So now I'm left with a decision. Do I go with my little Cooper Cup or do I go with another star running back a Derek Henry maybe a Dalvin cook? It seems to naji Harris go that high. I decided to go with my little Cooper Cup at four for two reasons. Number one is, as you mentioned, it's the first mock of the season. Kind of wanted to see how my team would turn out if I went wide receiver in the first round. Number two is, and this is something we're going to talk about with cupra cup throughout this off season, which is here at monster year, a record breaking year, like literally a record breaking year. And so obviously we expect some regression. He can regress quite a bit and still be worth the number one wide receiver in fantasy football. If you take his ten worst games from last year, it's over 207 fantasy points, which is better than like step on Diggs ten best games from last year. That's moments the matter presented by supercuts. Supercuts is the perfect way to get a haircut if you're someone who doesn't have time for a hair. That's like looking.

"Also, we got my guy Stanford Steve riding shotgun, trying to keep me out of the ditches. Download and subscribe to SP pod wherever you get your podcasts. We certainly appreciate it. Rate review subscribe, all that good stuff. Yeah. I kind of thought. You know, maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I thought old, what was her name, Donna? If I could just say this on national television. She was in the heat. She was too forward for me. I mean, I don't need that. I mean, you're right. You even heat. I mean, come on. Mystery. Yeah, no. That went completely out the window. All of last week was so incredibly weird. Yeah. I think you finally answered a question that I've had for a while being in the pathetic Pacific, the PAC 12. Because I've often wondered, what is it about the SEC that makes it so much more competitive and any other conference? And I didn't know it was recruiting everything. But when you talked about the SEC and the ACC last week, what have you got from sports talk in there actually? You said that the SEC is a way of life. And that doesn't make it right, but it does make it better. And the PAC 12 I mean, they do have good support. I mean, they have some really, I mean, they're really good in certain things. But I'm talking football. They fucking football. And so you answer that would have to another question is if it's such a way of life that it's so much more superior than any other conference. Why would they go outside and get somebody from the mountain the mountain conference or PAC 12? Why would they, in Ohio, somebody like her, why did LSU go to Brian? I think until even though I've interviewed him about it, I've never really heard a substantive explanation of why they got Brian Harrison, but I think the simple explanation is they got turned down by three or four people. They wanted Billy Napier. He said no. They wanted venables. He said no, I think a couple of other, I think another name they were interested in was Hugh fries and I think they got the feeling that they couldn't hire he freeze. So and the guy that really wanted to hire was Kevin Steele and then the president and the AD said, we're not hiring him. So they was at best about the 5th choice. Maybe lower. Thank you very much for the call. Let's continue with Andrew, who is in Alabama. Hello, Andrew. Hey, Paul. Is this you? Yes. This is me. Whoever me is. Yes, I'm sorry. This is my first time calling into your show and I actually got through just wanted to say, I'm really glad to hear that. I love your show. Yes, sir, my man. I'm from dos in Alabama. It's a prominent city. If you go into Panama City because that's pretty much where you're going to hear about it. I grew up, but this is auburn fan, the only reason is half my kindergarten class were all been fans. I got the Tiger tail and I've been in all of my fans ever since. So I want to get away from the coach dispute because I feel like that's the relevant that happened last night. Yeah, it's a bad thing. So like coaches should be respected higher with their actions, then that display last night. But I want to get away from that. This is my first time. I basically want to shout out to the auburn basketball team. I have a bunch of friends watching, and I'm just proud. So I can say with what happened with taking the trial out of not being able to play in the post game series two to three years, and then with the loss of Virginia, that devastating call, you know, no matter what, man, I'm proud. If you have a number one on your back, people are going to go for you, so I'm just proud about it. Even though we've had some tough losses, obviously, we wish we didn't want to lose. But I'm just extremely proud and I can't wait for the tournament. Well, Andrew, thank you very much for your call. And we really appreciate you jumping on board here. Let's continue. Trey is up next in Tuscaloosa. Hey man, do you have a good weekend? Yes. Good afternoon. Hey Paul, let me ask you a question about the juwan Howard situation. What that incident would that been a legend tip slap or was that a joke from red bay going prison yard slap? Which one was that? Huh? Legend, legend slab. Okay. But Paul, you know, he didn't. He didn't slap the coach that stopped him and tried to talk to him. He slapped a different coach. That's what I don't understand. And also, what are they going to do to the players that got involved in that? I've heard people in Leon's PN saying the players should be punished if the coaches were acting that way. They just following their coaches. Paul, those kids are old enough better not to act that way. Do you not believe that, Paul? I do. I mean, I mean, I would defend. Well, I couldn't defend anyone in this, but the players were showing a very bad example, but I would have massive suspensions. I would suspend anyone who was involved. You and me both. And one other thing, I think when they crossed each other's paths, juwan might have said something about the timeout and I think what pissed him off is the Wisconsin coach might have said to him, well, at least I had one left, unlike Chris Webber. You think that might have fit too well for him? That would be funny. That would have triggered the whole thing off. You got to go way back in time to know what he was talking about there. Charles is up next to HR. Hi, Paul. How are you? We are well. Thank you. Good, good. Did you happen to see the clip going around and Nick Saban, given a speech about leadership?.

"Not going to perform. I think them keeping Brian hartson is only a bad PR move. It's a bad move for the game. They will not win more than 8 games and the SEC, you can't get away with that. So that's my thoughts. I want to hear your take on it. But I just don't think they're going to win with the codes like that. Your player not happy, they won't perform. Well, Parker, the only way that they're going to change the dynamic is if something happens from within and have they missed that opportunity already. I think we need to hear from we need to hear from auburn in something other than prepared statements. I mean, I would just Sinclair the air. Get everybody up there at the table and say, yeah, we tried to fire the guy, but we didn't. But we love him now. I mean, I just want to hear something out of harsh and I want to hear something out of the administration. And right now, crickets. Thank you for the call. Let's check out John in mobile Alabama. Hello, John. Hey, Paul, how are you? Thanks for taking my call. Thank you. Hi, I got a question. Seriously, as an Alabama alum. Watching this horse and thing closely. I don't know if there's any way this could have turned out better for us than the way it did. Auburn street biggest rivals or self explanatory, Georgian Alabama. Those are the two top programs in America right now. And the only way that was going to change is if auburn had a dynamic coach. And I think a lot of people, as you heard in that last call, were concerned about you freeze. If you freeze, has a petition. That's a multiple leaning word. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? No, I didn't want to see you freeze in there either. Been fired Friday and you freeze introduced this week. The dynamics of the SEC west would have started changing immediately. Because she freeze can recruit. He would have brought in a staff and unfortunately for auburn, they're no better off than they were the other day, other than the president of auburn. It doesn't have to leave office with a black cloud over his head. He's back to retirement. He doesn't care. What does he care? What happens? The new guy can worry about it. Well, it's funny. I always thought that once pat died that they figure out a way to step down, but I guess I was wrong. Well, I'll tell you what, though, John pat die played a big role in retirement, I always felt pat died talk some sense into these boosters because he did understand football and they leaned heavily on him. Now, do I think pat dye would have been a fan of Brian harsen? No, absolutely not. Yeah. Yeah. Pat died liked. Pat I liked he liked hardcore football coaches who talked the same language that he spoke who understood what it was like to get to have been through what he went through. He would have loved Kevin Steele. And that's why those guys like Kevin Steele. Brian is in Birmingham and you are next up. Hey Paul what's happening? Brian. How are you, man? Brian, we are doing great. Thank you. Well, listen, I moved to Birmingham and 2001. I started listening to you then over the years, characters have been coming gone. Man, listen, legend. I can't take this guy anymore. I can't take him anymore. Listen, you know, he's got his whole backstory about the NFL and an inmate love that black. And then, you know, and then he calls in one day and he's crying. And he's virtually in tears. And I mean, it's just all smoke and mirrors, man. This guy, he had his, he had his little talk show where he did like car repair stuff. Do you remember that? Sure. And so I mean, where is that now? Well, I don't understand why legend, I don't know. Why does she get such a high place in your roster of characters and callers? I do not get it. This guy. I mean, come on. East coast black hat. Okay. All right, thank you. Hey, Brian, seriously. Legend is an agent.

"This is a skill that is obfuscated against the NCAA countless times. And now they're investigating their own program. And I don't mean to act like I'm outraged, but it is outrageous to listen to this and to read the statements. And the university is talking about not reacting to social media posts, but what exactly are they reacting to? Here's the other thing. That's what's so funny about this. And our reactive to social media is not right reacting to headlines. The problem is, if they are unable to fire Brian harsh, they'll just blame the media and social media for all this. It was just overblown by all of us. When it all started from inside the house, I keep saying this. It's like the movie scream. The call is coming from inside the house auburn. You're the one who started all this. People have been looking for a way to get out from Brian Harrison since the day he was hired there. This is nothing new. This comes for you from you from the school same school that produced the Kevin Steele coup, which failed a year ago. This comes from the same school that had people in boosters trying to get Gus miles on fired within a year of him citing a 7 year contract extension in 2017. This is auburn. This is normal for them. I feel bad for the fans there. I feel bad for some of the people that building I know and I call friends because there are people in the shadows always trying to wrangle for power. And again, timing is everything. This is an inflection point for auburn. They got a new president. They're probably going to have a new ATHLEAN-X director. They didn't get the head coach they wanted. They're trying to move these pieces on the chess board so that certain people could have more power and influence here in the next three to four or 5 years. But Brandon, the people that failed in the coup attempt are now the same people, are they not? Who are attempting this coup attempt? There are so many people so many, but there's so many people. There's almost factions. I compare it to fantasy football. They're all dealing with the same roster and same team, but they're trying to build it their own way and they're not communicating at all times. And when one thing goes wrong, they blame the other. They're rarely on the same page. And it's amazing that offered over the years has been able to be successful. I fear for auburn that what we're seeing is we're seeing two parallel universes starting in about 2008, 2009. Tennessee had one year with lane kiffin he left for USC and the program just won the dumps, right? Auburn was dealing with Nick Saban coming to Alabama and becoming a national contender once again. And it became clear that it might be a dynasty in 2008, 2009. And Aubrey went and hired Jean chiswick after two of the worst recruiting years for them on the calendar. And somehow, some way they managed to win a national championship in 2010 and then go on to be in another one in 2013. And when two SEC titles and contemporary third and 2017, I fear that we're seeing two case studies here that were coinciding at the same time and we just failed to realize it. It was Tennessee falling apart and it auburn somehow going the opposite direction. It was too parallel universes. And don't you get the feeling now that they're about to switch spots like freaky Friday? I get that feeling. It's almost like awkward it's trying its damnedest to make sure that they fail. And in spite of that, they have somehow succeeded over the years. Tennessee, they dealt with that and different terms. But we're in a situation here. It's almost like auburn just wants things to be dramatic just to see the excitement they feed off the drama. You covered this program. Most auburn people don't want this. Most auburn people are good folks. What we have here, do we not? A couple of boosters who have just been running this program for years and now they want to change, which I guess is their right. They got the power. They have the political clout, which brings me to the next question. The name of the moment is you freeze. He was persona non grata, after multiple issues faced him at all this. It was widely reported that he couldn't get a coordinator job in the SEC or and later a head coaching position. Now his people are putting out the word. He is clear. He's good to go right now. So pick up the hue freeze story. Well, there is some push there. He frees. I mean, he would take the auburn job in a heartbeat. I think we all kind of know that. And I do think that the runway is a little bit more clear for him to take a big gig if it were to come open in that school to show interest. The question is, it's where they're offered to really be interested. Now, if this happens with Brian arsen being fired for calls without calls, whatever. At this point, it just seems inevitable. They're going to move quickly. I've been told they're going to name an interim coach, who's probably on the staff right now. And they've got names already in mind because this has been in the works for weeks. I mean, they've been discussing this for weeks. Don't pull yourselves. The timing is everything. They have a board of trustees being last week. It's been all calculated around all this timing. So they've got names in mind. I'm not so sure it'll be huge breeze or someone who I don't even know if he'll be very seriously considered, but we'll start hearing those names. I think pretty quickly after they finally reach a decision and see how this goes. So final question, where is Brian harston and wherever he is? When if ever is he coming back? He is still the auburn head football coach, is he not I have been told he was asked to come back. I've heard he's in Mexico on vacation. If I was him, I'd be just having my phone off and drink up. I'm going to Aruba and then I'm going to Argentina and I'm working my way all the way down to the South Pole. I'm not coming back. Yeah, I mean, listen, I would turn that phone off because he's already made a statement. ESPN, fantastic job talking to him, by the way, Chris slow. If you daml, he's already said, listen, I'm not going anywhere. He's pretty much excited. Pay my buyout, maybe a little bit more if you want to keep me quiet.

"Everybody else. So I thought initially, it might work because he's a guy who maybe wouldn't be as influenced by boosters meddling in his program. I could kind of keep those guys out because I think that was one of the guest miles on his biggest problems with all of them, but the fact that maybe he didn't develop a relationship with some of those guys as quickly as they wanted. Maybe that's what we'll do we met in the end if they get rid of it. Yeah, I understand why you're probably not going to get an announcement on a Friday afternoon, Mark and your point was a good one. They just named a new president. That should be a coronation. And it's worth remembering. The reason why they're naming a new president to fill in for Jay gouge is a Jay gouge was to former president who retired and was replaced by the former president of Iowa state who got fired and I talked to this man a couple of months ago. I sat next to him on a plane and he basically felt like he got fired because he gave Kashmir's on a contract extension a couple of years ago. I would say you're pretty accurate with that from my understanding of the situation. So we're not talking about a normal. I mean, this place isn't normal at any level. And now they've moved up to dean of engineering who's been to school for a long time, has a good reputation. Obviously. And but you said something that really struck me that they're hoping to make a decision by the middle of next week. So meanwhile, coach is on vacation according to your own story. He is hanging and twisting slowly in the wind, recruiting for next year as well underway. This has to be affecting that. So if he stays and nobody seems to think there's a good probability that he's already damaged goods, is he not? Yes. I think it would be hard to get the toothpaste back in the tube at this point. I do agree with that. And what I said, middle of the next week, I was just saying, hopefully, by the middle of next week, this thing doesn't drag on. Look, Friday news dumps are the best way to get rid of bad news, right? To release bad news, but I do agree that they don't want to take attention away from the border regions more to trustees approving the new president today. How do you feel if you're Bruce peri? You got the number one ranked basketball team in the country. And this is going to dominate headlines for the next couple of weeks. So it's amazing. It's February and here we are. Mark, just being at that meeting, I realized it sound like the old days where you just kind of belly up to the bar the night before and you can find out what's really going on. What could you read into the tone and tenor of those who you saw? I mean, most of the obviously most of it was the most of the concrete stuff today that was the important stuff took place in executive sessions and we weren't allowed in there. But I think they're just trying to figure it out. I think harston was blindsided by this. I think Alan green was blindsided by this. Again, I think it's coming from people outside the athletic department that are trying to pull the strings again. And I think those people and you know the names didn't want him to begin with. So would it be fair to say that this band of brothers who has run auburn for, I don't know, probably since the day pad die was hired. And didn't get their way with Kevin Steele, now want their way again. Yeah. I don't know if it'd be Kevin Steele, but the last time with Kevin Steele. Yeah. Yeah. I would agree with that. I think that's accurate. They didn't want him to begin with. He went 6 and 7, he lost 5 games, both his coordinators over the last what he had 5 coordinators since he's been there. Yeah, he's had recruiting the recruiting class wasn't great that didn't sign a single player. The traditional national signing day. Mark the two of us have covered auburn collectively for a very long time and I don't think either one of us is really that surprised they are. I am not. It is a lovely village, Paul. I always get to have you on that. I hope you enjoyed your day in Alabama. I appreciate it, Mark. Thank you very, very much. Thanks, Paul. Mark, one of the great investigative reporters in the country. And you heard it. And we'll continue talking about it because it's not over yet, but it doesn't sound like the story is going to last very long. Into next week. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Gary, how are you? Well, how about you? Same here. Thank you. The only thing I had to say was is that doge got to count in while ago is his last name up Doc. He's in the family. I don't know if he's had the same name, but he's a cousin. No problem, man. Good show. Thanks for having me. Thank you very much. Phil is in Alabama, hey, Phil. Hi, Paul. I hope you and your family are doing well. We are. Thank you. And staying warm, I'm a little distracted about what I'm hearing. About auburn. So I'm asking you would you please for the jury describe for us the definition of institution lack of institutional control? Well, lack of institutional control is when you're really forcing me to describe auburn, aren't you? Well, I think there's a picture in the dictionary. It's when either people inside the university or external parts of it, such as boosters, run roughshod over the structure, where the people in charge have no control over what is going on. It's a little more expansive than that. So in essence, you have no regard for the basic credo of the university and relation to the NCAA. So would auburn and their actions post pat dye. Not be a picture perfect definition of lack of institutional control and why is the NCAA not doing something about it? Well, the NCAA did sanction auburn in the early 80s or the late 70s. They sanctioned them again. I believe in 1990 two for the Eric Ramsay situation. I don't think they were ever hit with that. It really comes down to good lawyering and auburn to its credit has had great lawyering over the years. In particular, one gentleman named Sam Franklin has probably kept them out of more scrapes than any lawyer imaginable. And. But it's well known. I mean, the school has been sanctioned. At one time, I think the school came very close to losing its accreditation from the southern academic classification. Absolutely happened..

"So all these home games before the road trip to Georgia at all miss Arkansas at home at state a and M in Alabama. Barrett give us the range based on what we know today of what fans should expect under and year two. Well, I think three of the four non conferences are gimmies. I don't know fucking state. It's hard for me to Penn State to me is just a head scratcher at this point. But I'd say that one's probably 50 50, maybe you lean a little bit more toward Penn State. So when you say that three of the four non conference games are toss ups and one of your cross division games is George every year and Missouri at home, okay, I can see that potentially being a win, but you're looking at a season, it might be 6 and 6 again. If I had to look at that and say, what's the record? Okay, you win a couple toss ups and you're 6 and 6, 7 and 5 at best. And I think that's an indictment of where that program is. I think when you factor in quarterback uncertainty, offensive uncertainty, the lack of functioning offensive lineman and depth and strength and conditioning that has just regressed. It's hard to find any reason to think that that team will be anything more than a 500 at best team. And if they finish 500 and that's no guarantee, you're talking about too bad years at a school that fired without even blinking an eye on national championship coach two years later. They got rid of Gus mileson. Say whatever you want about him, but he'd been to the national championship. He'd been to the SEC, he'd beaten saving three times. It's hard for me to believe that those guys who wanted Kevin Steele are going to be quiet if the season ends like you like you just alluded to. Yeah, no, they won't. There's no doubt about it. And yeah, the Gus miles on thing. It was a needed to happen, right? I think everybody had come to that conclusion. And Brian harston bringing fresh blood in at the time I said it made sense and it at the time I thought it did make sense for a lot of different reasons. But the way the program has been handled a coupled with lack of results. Yeah, if they go 6 and 6, even if they go 7 and 5 again, you have to wonder what those 5 look like because that absolutely could have an impact in the decision making process. So, you know, the budgetary stuff, I know auburn's operating at a loss this year. I mean, COVID stuff, you know, that's probably going to happen with a lot of schools Ohio State came out with their numbers today and obviously they had some shortcomings as well. But yeah, I mean, I think you have to consider making a change at that point because you can't expect Alabama and Georgia to come back to the field Texas a and M is going to sign the best recruiting class of all time, like you mentioned SEC schools litter the recruitment rankings the top 25 of the recruiting rankings that will be finalized tomorrow. So yeah, I mean, I think if that happens, if there's a 6 and 6, 7 and 5 type season again, yeah, I mean, you have to consider making a change because you can't allow the program to fall further and further behind. And that's exactly what it would be doing in that situation. Talking to Barrett Barrett's look at some other SEC schools and I realized some of them are just so predictable with a and M and Alabama and Georgia, but beyond the three that will get all the attention tomorrow. Where are you concentrating? Which school do you think is the most intriguing in terms of upward mobility and maybe one other than auburn that you're concerned about? Yeah. I mean, I'm interested to see what happens with Florida with Billy Napier because it does seem like he had to first recode his own roster, which is hard to do, obviously. And then fill in some gaps. LSU to me is very interesting too, because Paul, you saw it as well as I did in that Texas bowl Brian Kelly got on the broadcast and basically said, hey, look, we're operating at a massive scholarship deficiency. They're going to hit the portal hard, but also how are they going to close on the recruiting trail? I think that'll be interesting. And it'll give them a really good gauge as to, you know, what spots they do have to fill in the transfer portal. So LSU to me is one that I'm really interested in because really it's been two years, Paul re talked about LSU playing games late in the season with like quarter rosters and half rosters of players that are scholarship players. So because of that, seeing how they close with high schoolers will I think determine exactly where Brian Kelly needs to go in the transfer portal moving forward and lord knows there's going to be a lot of players, a lot of potential tigers in that transfer portal over the course of the next few months, especially after spring practice when depth sharks sort of start getting figured out. Barrett sleeves some great stuff on auburn and the SEC. Thank you very much, bear. We're heading to a break right now. More of your phone calls at 855-242-7285 back with more. "Listen and follow now on Apple podcast Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. And Chris is up next in Pensacola, hello Chris. How are you doing today? Very well. Thank you. Just wanted to know, have you heard anything about Florida possibly trying to go after new or even reaching out to place too early strong to try and get them back and see if the defense can get improved? Yeah, I don't have any doubt, they'll go after Kevin Steele. I think he's probably the most valuable defensive coordinator prospect out there. I think the real question is, can they land him? Kevin Steele is his work for some of the best coaches in the country and this is just my opinion, but what he want to work for Dan Mullen, I think it would be good to try and give him a chance at being actual head coach. I know Scott Strickland's having his little questionable mindset right now on letting him go or not, but if they do, I think that could be a good hierarchy floor. I mean, I agree. I think Kevin is a superb coach and he set this year out because you remember he started the year in January as the auburn interim coach and he became the Tennessee interim coach. And I think he was under contract at Tennessee, so he couldn't just walk out until the air cleared, which took a while, so he didn't coach this year, but I just, I mean, listen, Dan Mullen has not enhanced his reputation among coaches, by the way he dumped a sea and Todd grantham last week. He has every right to fire coaches, but in the industry, you do that when the season's over. Unless you have an extraordinary situation, which he did not. He had his defense didn't play a lick better after Todd grantham that it did with Todd was simply playing to the crowd and that's not what administrators want to see as I had unless they told him he had to do it. Larry is up next in Texas. Hello, Larry. Hello, Paul. First time caller. Enjoy yourself. Thank you. I wanted to make a comment about the 25 teams that they picked this last week. Right. They finally got University of Texas. I mean, university of Houston in the top 25, I've watched a lot of university of Houston games this year. And I can tell you that they may be they may be Cincinnati and playoffs. Yeah, I hear a lot of people talk about that. I think I haven't seen Houston play much, but I do agree with you. They're an excellent team. And since I has SMU this week, and likely Houston in two weeks. I think they have since that their last game is regular season with eastern tennis. They're out of the air. They're at east Carolina, I believe. Yeah, east Carolina, you're right. Which is they're competitive team. They nearly beat South Carolina a few weeks ago. Hey, we're up against a break. We have a lot to do, including Mike Griffith in the next hour. Don't forget tomorrow we're live in Tuscaloosa. We'll come back at right after this. Bald men on campus. I'm 6 Greenberg. I'm David Ellis. And I'll be fine so Ellis. You talk about three guys that look at the game the basketball for different president. The energy that we have the chemistry that we have, the three of us bald guys have well over a hundred years of college basketball experience. 80 years with Seth Greenberg and then you and I have ten years each of us to a hundred old men on campus, foully challenge, but brilliant, no less. Don't miss it. I don't know where you go to get it, but wherever you go, go..

"The pride passion and pageantry of college football lives here. This is the qualifying bomb show hour two podcast. And the second hour has dawned here. We've had very lively first hour in case you missed it. Scott rabelais from the advocate. He's been there many, many years really embedded with the mindset of the LSU think tank and he pushed pretty hard on the fact that Jimbo Fisher is target number one of Scott Woodward and quite frankly they believe that Texas coming into the SEC could be one reason why Jimbo might decide to leave concerned with the breadth and large ass of the University of Texas. I'm not sure I completely understand that considering how bad Texas has been lately, but that was at least the mindset from bat rouge. Lincoln Riley and Mel Tucker also on Scott Woodward's list, according to rabelais. We will continue with more of your calls and Bill is in Georgia. Hey, Bill, go right ahead. Hi Paul. I'm glad you took my call. And the Florida fan moved to Georgia from Florida. And my understanding is that Mullen hasn't been able to recruit because of some NCAA violation and that's over in December. Is that true? He received a what to call a show call a show cause. I don't know specifically what he's precluded from doing, but I do think it's a factor. Yes. Okay. And the other thing is I wanted to talk about is, you know, me personally, I think that with Ed O being out of LSU, if he would be my first target for a defensive coordinator, but I wanted to know what your thoughts would be on that and so you thought would be the sense of coordinator and then I have one more common after that. Yeah, I mean, I think if you're looking for a really good defensive coordinator, the name that comes to mind to me is Kevin Steele, he was the defensive coordinator at Alabama, and then he yeah, I saw him. He was number two on my list. I thought yeah it was like the best thing. The only thing I would say about air is I'm not sure somebody needs to correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I'm not sure that always has ever been a defense. Has he been a defensive coordinator? Was he a defensive line coach? Dave or Randall? Yeah, I don't know that has ever been the coordinator. Dave Randall was a coordinator down there. Yeah, I saw Kevin Steele was still out there without a job. Yeah, well here's the deal on Kevin Steele. Kevin Steele had a contract with it's a crazy story. Remember Kevin Steele was auburn's defensive coordinator. He became the interim head coach for the bowl game. And then he was hired by Jeremy Pruitt as defensive coordinator and before I think he even got to Knoxville, Pruitt had been fired and they named Kevin Steele, the interim, the interim head coach. And he served for about three weeks and I think he may have still been under contract and so I think he missed the window of since he was at Tennessee really through the month of January. I think he had been paid. I presume, I think that's one reason why he didn't coach this year. But I think Kevin Steele would come back for the right job and certainly Florida would be a pretty good opportunity. Thank you for the call. But I think Kevin steals an outstanding defensive coordinator. Quite frankly, I would take him over at ozer on. Trip is in Tampa. You're on the air, go ahead trip. Well, good afternoon, Paul. Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to speak with you today, sir. The joy of listening to you there in Alabama on WJ OX back in the good old Bruno supermarket date. I remember I haven't had an opportunity to call in before and with today the inventor and stay. I kind of wanted to share a little of my father's story. Sure. That. And before I share it, though, Paul, I just want to say from my family to all veterans who served a simple thank you. But mister Fein Bond, the fog of war can greatly impact people. My father was a senior journalism major at the university of Georgia in 1969 in his number came up. For a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon his return, his story was completely different than what his actual tour of duty was. For 49 years of my life, I believe that my father was in a non combative role in South Vietnam as a postman. And due to the dreaded disease of dementia, my father, about a year ago, started sharing a story about him being in the 5th infantry division. Of the army. Served above the DMZ in different areas in Vietnam and actually earned a bronze star. Needless to say, with his dementia diagnosis, I had no idea what was true. What was a story? And long story short, my father just passed away in October. And I became both his advocate and his fiduciary with the VA administration. And had the VA verify this story that my father started tearing telling a year ago was accurate. And so the unique thing about that fog of war is my father self medicated for over 40 years. PTSD was not even a term for that Vietnam vet. And so my father did the best that he could, but the one connection for us was the university of Georgia. At the age of 9, he took me to Athens. And as I aged, many, many years and decades later, I would ask my dad, I'm like, dad. Why don't you ever put me in a deer stand? So I grew up in Atlanta. And every friend's dad would put him in a deer stand and fall but my dad took me to hat. And he said son because I hunted man. I never wanted to hunt an animal again. And so we rallied around the Georgia bulldogs. My father was at the 1980 national championship game. This year with the exception of my father's passing has been a joy. And how that connection was for our family was the love for the Georgia bulldogs. I graduated from there at 93. My wife and 94 and we currently have a senior on campus. That will graduate. He's going to get one more football season. So I let him go one more semester. He's going to get this year and next year. And tomorrow, I'll catch a plane to Knoxville, my son will drive up for Athens. And we're going to celebrate those memories. A bad, also known as gree to his grandkids. And follow the bulldog as far as we can. And see if they can do it all in the year that he passed. And so Paul, thank you for giving the opportunity for someone to share a Vietnam vet. His small story, but most importantly, his love for the Georgia bulldogs. Sure, thank you so much. I don't think I have the right words to thank you for sharing that in our deepest condolences and hope to meet you up in Knoxville this weekend. We'll take a short break back after this. You are listening.

"Now. Yeah not necessarily yeah. It's the steelers lost. This game forty five zero. I'd be a little bit exactly. It depends how they win or lose the game. You know if if this is one of those twenty seven twenty four games or something like that okay. Is it great. No is it going to sting. Yes is it the end of the world season over now now but if it's forty five did nothing. Oh my gosh. i don't wanna do a podcast after game like that next week because you know someone will have to make sure i've taken my blood pressure medicine Because of all the yelling. I'll be doing so i mean if the opened up at home against one of the teams ranked at the bottom like the jets or something like that and they lose then you. That's when you flip out but the steelers are playing a quality opponent on the road. So this is. I mean it's really gonna show us a lot and like i said it depends on how they win or lose the game because if the bills come out and have eight turnovers at the steelers you know get by because the bills missa field goal to win the game at the end. That's not going to still confidence either. Say it's not so it really you know to me. The bills are better coach than that. I don't see that happening now but at the same time it it really depends on how the game is played it honestly sound awful like preseason week four when we were saying you know the steelers are going out here. They're not playing their starters. You want to see the be competitive. It doesn't matter if they win and this isn't it doesn't matter if you don't want to because it's the right. She's it's very it's important but then they can't play the way they did. You know what i'm saying. A sub sub one. We make sure. Because i'll pull it up so if someone you know if i had that forty five zero game like i'm talking about pittsburgh said knee-jerk reaction will be one giants wearing rent. Swear jar will be. My kid's college will be paid for in full in cash by what the swear jar looks like exactly exactly so. Let's get into some more of these things that we said that when we were asking the question of kevin steele's bring it all together for week one. Yup the defense. I mean we're just talking. I mean in order to talk about the more we were setting up a little bit even more in this half is it's there's there's a lot doing on with this more than just points four points against and everything else so the defense. What does defense to bring together in order to have a greater chance of winning this game on sunday anything particularly you want to start with the sure. Why not. let's go with the first. Let's go with the obvious first. Okay okay is tracy. Jordan watt on the field. There you go. that's the you know. We talked about a lot in the first half. We talked about the contract situation coach. Tomlin says he expects them to practice tomorrow. He said he they even asked what you're expecting this because of conversations you've had and he's like i'm not telling you about conversations we've that he's leaving that between us so i don't blame him there but he has coached. Tom has all the confidence that they're he's going to be practicing tomorrow. At available week one. The question is how available but also coached almonds like man i've got i've got no reservations. About added snaps to melvin ingram. Third very happy with what he's brought to the steelers and jeffrey. I already talked about jeffries in the cutting room floor. Something else that he brought up on. I'm pretty sure it was on that one. I've listened to sony podcast. The i can't remember which one it is. I think it was general. I'm giving credit jeffrey. Even if it's not jeffrey because he's got a great geoffrey. Geoffrey deserves credit. Exactly and it was. The steelers wouldn't have kept only four outside linebackers if they didn't expect to play yup they would've kept more. So yes i'm gonna bring up the question of because of last year. Last year jeffrey benedict steelers vertex. After the bills game and it was basically. I think it was the game or was even an off season. I can't remember it all runs together. Twenty two hundred articles in three years. We'll do that to you. What happened with the bills as they scored two touchdowns coming out of the second half. And that's was the difference in the game and then move the ball so well all they did was move steph on the other side to get him away from steven nelson on camp sudden. And that's what they did and then the steelers adjusted well after touchdowns. Yeah after two touchdowns. But there's no stephen us now but he was joe haden in that game. Snag joe haden back but you really have to question what's going on at the cornerback. Position is especially with everything going on with sub package. I did an article today where coach tomlin basically laughed about it and said hey you notice that we didn't put us lot corner him position on the on the depth chart. Yeah we did that on purpose. But he didn't just. Because i'm planning to close to the vest and other words should i. Well the thing is people like is it that he doesn't know they still aren't sure they're still trying to work it out or even better. Do we have to know because in telling us you're.

"We weren't quite sure what their identity was going to be so game. That'll be very fascinating for variety of reasons. You look at auburn on the defensive side pain the stop unit returns. It's top two leading tacklers in kobe. Mclean and owen. Propo- they had two hundred plus tackles between them last year. Defensive line is deep secondary should be very good as well. You get smoke monday. And roger mccreary back there to provide a great foundation but can they do enough to create short fields and take some of the burden off the offense. I want my mind to be a blank slate. When i dig into these teams and i do try to give the benefit of the doubt. But i can't for the life of me figure out the derek derek mason higher like i i don't understand it now. He might put people are really bullish. That's one higher that you were skeptical as i am harsh. Seen and what he did. You know a boise. Taking over head coach and ceo of a big program. People that i've talked to really think that mason is a much better soldier than he is a general and he can have a big impact but of course. He's not gonna be kevin steele right. And it's like derek mason might be okay this year but has he really shown ability to recruit or be a great defensive. Mind all the success. Derek mason had early on vandy was with. James franklin's players. And i dug into this if go back to vanderbilt's defense in two thousand twelve and thirteen those were james. Franklin's final two seasons their vandy finished twenty third and thirty seventh and defensive efficiency franklin moves onto penn state and incomes. Derek mason the very first season year. One doug mason's vandy defense had dropped to fifty seventh inefficiency with james franklin's recruits you fast forward to derrick mason's final season advani before he was fired and he was working with his own recruits. Vandy was a hundred in sixth in defensive. Snp plus with. James franklin's recruits. Derek mason defense regressed when he couldn't maintain franklin recruiting level. The defense turned to real. Shit so i. I don't get the hype here. i don't understand it. i'm sure he's a great guy. He says all the right things. He's well-spoken he's buttoned up. But he hasn't produced. I just don't see it to me. Kevin steele's a far better defensive mind than derek mason and you look at this season there's going to be a style shift from steals four to five to a mixed three four. They're calling it a bear defense with derek mason. The cupboard to your point is pretty stocked. though especially secondary roger. Mccreery is a beast nose for the ball always takes on the opposing team's number one. Smoke monday was very good. And coverage last season trae shawn miller who we also mentioned in the big twelve podcast transferred in from west virginia. Nehemiah pritchard was fantastic last season. It's rumored that he's gonna move to the slot auburn's secondary truly has the potential to be a top. Ten olympo- is one of the best coverage linebackers in the sec. Little under-sized great and coverage the hope is guys like chandler rootin- who opted out and wesley steiner. Pick up some of the slack this year at at at linebacker there's questions upfront about size and pass rush ability. If you if you look. I mean auburn's line did get pushed around just out. Physical righteous handled at the point of attack all year last year. Finish ninety eight line yards one hundred fifteenth and stuff right. Almost forty nine percent runs great successful as outside the top. One hundred. Those smaller alban defenders would just get locked on blocks in just couldn't awesome so you'd see a ton of gashes. Thirteen percent of runs were explosive against albert. So i'm not sure going to a three four is going to really help the the run stop unit. But we'll see the front didn't create a lot of havoc either or much pressure but one hundred than havoc young guys like derek hall. Jj they're gonna be tasked with taking the next step they have to. We saw calling a limited role last season. He made the most of his pass. Rupp snaps delivered a twenty one percent win rate but this is a small front for not a ton of depth got pushed around in the spring game as well pushed around last season. We'll see if there's change their todd but if auburn wants to get back to a top five defense they're gonna have to figure out how to be a little bit more physical on the front. And i just don't.

"Jackson take advantage of that He's gonna have to throw in this game, which leads me in the bed number two Jackson over 27 a half passing attempts. He has been under this number in five straight games, so you have to ask yourself. Hmm. If he's been under in five straight games, and he's only averaging 25 passing attempts per game this season, why would the bookmakers said it? It 27 a half well last year in the divisional round when these two men he threw the ball 59 times when they met the regular season. A few weeks ago, he threw the ball 29 times. This is a match up in which he has to throw the football for this team to win. He has to throw the football. The Baltimore offense to move their way down the field. Jackson over 27 a half passing attempts. I lean to the Titans, plus 3.5. I also like Ryan Tannehill over 234 and a half passing yards in this game. He's going to need to throw. I don't see Baltimore saying. Go ahead. Derrick Henry beat us for a third straight time and embarrass us. I think they're going to attack Henry with more aggression, and they're going to allow Tannehill to try to beat them through the air. I'm gonna go over 234 and a half passing yards there. Just please, Please give us a great game between these two. This is Game day. Matt Jones. Meyer Metcalfe. He's Joe 40 by Matt Jones stepped away for a bit. ESPN radio. The ESPN happens here. Sex him. Channel lady next up another important game on both sides. Bears versus Saints. There are sustained someday. Someday someday. All right, I'm gonna play the under it 47 a half year. I know. A lot of people don't want to bet against scoring, but there's some good rationale here. I think the number is far too high. Chicago had a barrage of a three game winning streak near the end of the season. Maybe Houston, Minnesota and Jacksonville. Those three teams were combined 12 and 36. As a result, Mitchell Strabinsky was playing well, because all three teams ranked 24th or worse in pass defense. He should be able to look good in those games. But what happened when the bear stepped up in class? They played the Packers and week 16. They scored 16 points and they fell on their face. Chicago's not a hard team to figure out against average teams to below average teams. They can win against good teams. They don't win. That's how it works with the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately for all my friends in Chicago, I don't see them stepping up in class against New Orleans, putting up a lot of points in this game. The states of one of the best defense is in the NFL. Chicago brings a pretty good defense to the table in its own right. Don't think New Orleans is gonna need to score 40 to win this game. I'm playing under 47 A half points Saints bears by one challenge with this game is because of injuries has been a long time since Drew Brees album tomorrow, and Michael Thomas have all been on the field together working together, So we wonder if there might be Ah, slow start for this New Orleans team last one for Joe Fort by the gambling expert. This is Game day on ESPN radio. Matt Jones. He's a footballer Myron Metcalf, Browns versus Steelers. All right, so this one feels too easy. And maybe I'm just walking into the trap here by laying the six with Pittsburgh. I also think they're an excellent six point teaser leg. If maybe you want to tease them with the Rams and the Rams at nine, however, you want to do it at this point. The reason is this. It's actually multilayered number one. We know that Kevin Steele Vance gave the head coach of the Cleveland Browns is not gonna be around for this game because of covert, and at the same time he was also there play caller. So you're telling me you're taking what many believe the front runner for coach of the year who also happens to call the plays out of the equation? What's that work to a point spread? That's number one number two because everyone's focused on defense keep being out there, not focusing on the fact that Joel but Tonio, the offensive guard is out. Antonio is the best offensive guard in the business when it comes to pass blocking. Pittsburgh is the best team in the business when it comes to bringing pressure. So you're losing one of your key offensive lineman and your play caller from Baker Mayfield. That's a huge blow. Now look at the other side of the field. Olivier Vernon, one of Cleveland's pass rushers isn't going to play in this game because of an Achilles injury. Cleveland already struggles to generate a consistent pass rush. So if you can't get up to Ben Roethlisberger, he's gonna have plenty of time to hit his arsenal deep down the field, and he does have an arsenal with the anti Johnson Chase Claypool. And Juju Smith Schuester do not be fooled by that. So ultimately, the two weeks Pittsburgh's been thinking about this game versus Cleveland and the fact that they just started practicing again. What today yesterday Huge advantage for the Steelers. I'm laying the six with Pittsburgh. Let me just say there's gotta be a way for Kevin's too fancy to be involved in this game. I mean, coaches in this situation should have a role. You could do a lot of things. Virtually. I just hate the idea of being removed from a incredible playoff game. Like.

Coaching search updates: Kevin Steele the favorite at Auburn

"Obviously we're in the middle. Coaching carousel to and i think the most interesting one right now is auburn I think they spent twenty one point. Five million dollars to buy out gus malzahn. We could argue whether he should have been fired or not the end of the day. He lost the momentum there and they the boosters put the you know got out the hat and collected the money and they fired him. So you think okay. You're gonna fire Coach gus malzahn. All that money. You're going to want to go out and get like the splashes possible coach. You can get tell us who's actually leading the coaching search right now as we reported this morning. That sources are telling me that the front runner for this job right now is defensive coordinator kevin steele and while that may blow some people's minds. He has some very very influential people at auburn who are big believers in him and in his corner at auburn. Especially that matters right so look We have a story up but the athletic now about who's in the mix there and the ones. I think one of the people who is really a big contender against kevin steele on this front is lane. Kiffin at ole miss But i think he would have a hard time turning that job down. I think he's obviously a big name. Now he's foreign four. It's it's interesting in that. I think a saturday's game between ole miss and lsu doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. You know outside of those two programs. But i think it may may need a little bit of something potentially at auburn as crazy as it sounds because for some people at auburn i think they could shape it and saying all right kevin steele dreadful run as the head coach at baylor twenty. Plus years ago he was one and thirty one in big twelve. Play at baylor is a long time ago but people. I've talked to down there have made the case where you know what at had a bad record. The first time he was a head coach and he just won a national title a year ago. And my my counter. That was well. He did have to times as interim pretty lengthy runs where he was at least able to show people he's evolved and grown and those people said look a people at auburn feel like kevin steele's been the guy who's hold it together for them the last few years he is very well respected within the scc And so also know how. Attractive is lane to auburn. He did a really good job at fau their foreign You know if he loses to. Lsu's not very good this year. He's foreign five. I think probably diminishes a little bit No its first year. It wasn't like anybody expected out all messed great. But he's definitely a candidate As billy napier from louisiana Maybe who freezes is somebody that that auburn would push for. I think and you still have steve sarkisian there. You know also in the state of alabama So it's a really interesting. Search in auburn is wildly unpredictable. What does but From what i heard they would love to have a coach Decided upon by the beginning of next week
