"I am your host. Sarah and I am very excited as I said at the end of the last episode to bring you a second interview this week. A second interview with an author who has just written historical fiction. This is a historical fiction that is actually based on a true story of His family so it's kind of historical fiction slash memoir. It is written as a novel but it is based on a true story. The book is called heart of steel. It is by Kevin de Miller and The description well it's fascinating. Because how much do we really know about our family's history? My mom has done a ton of genealogy work. She's been fascinated for Many years now on his trace family all kinds of back to all kinds of interesting things and places and events but how much do we really know about the people in our family The you know the my grandparents told us stories but I know we're only getting parts of those stories and that is really where this story starts is finding out that your family history isn't exactly what you thought it might be Solution of heart of steel. Is this in the early morning of September Thirteenth Nineteen Twenty and Southampton Ohio Twelve Year? Old Stanley runs for his life along dusty country road. His mother frantically set him to get to fetch the sheriff fearing for the safety of his family. He pushes himself. Onward to reach. Help an infamous scandal unfolds over the next several weeks taking Stanley and his siblings on a harrowing journey through a notorious Orphanage and an incredible attempt to escape he will later meet his soulmate. An Irish woman who will put him on a path to healing and help him finally come to terms with the torment of a family tragedy. The story is based on true events in the life of Stanley William Miller it inspires the heart on how a young man's devotion to his family pushes him beyond impossible odds and testifies to the perseverance of the human spirit. A broken spirit can only find healing and redemption through true love and real forgiveness. So this is a said fascinating in that. You never quite fully know your family's true story you know it depends it. Depends on your family and how they communicate and different generations and different cultures. Different family types. Communicate differently in this case His HIS GROWN SON. Kevin's father did not know this story of what happened. In his own father's childhood they learned that their last name of Miller is not actually their last name That their grandfather changed it. And so it's very interesting story of discovery but also discovery for the the younger generations but also that we get the story of Stanley and it starts in nineteen twenty as the description says. And then you get some interesting interesting pieces of prohibition history As Stanley grows older and is Well He. He's a runner at for part of the book. There's some descriptions of speakeasy and one thing I found fascinating was that this does take place in Ohio. Parts of it are in Canton which is a very close to her. My husband grew up. And we were just there this past summer so If you go to Kevin's website there are some videos. And there's a couple. There's one video where he goes to Warren Ohio. Which is where my my. My husband has family and so just watching. That video was fascinating for me because I was like Yup. That's that's Ohio. Is that area where my husband grew up so it was kind of fun to Experience that area through this story and Yeah just kind of fun for me personally. But let's go ahead and turn now to the interview with Kevin Miller. I keep trying to call him. Kevin Steel because of the name of the book. Sorry about that Kevin. Kevin D Miller is the author of this book. The book is heart of steel. I do have copies to give away so stay tuned until the end of the episode to find out how you can enter the giveaway. And let's now turn to the conversation with Kevin. Hi Kevin Welcome to the PODCAST. Hi Sarah Thank you for inviting me on. Thank you for being here. I am excited to talk about your book. It's called heart of steel before we get to that though. If you could share a little bit about yourself that would be great. Oh absolutely yeah Actually I'M A I'M A. Us veteran spent eight years in the Air Force I am. I was born in Canton. Ohio and actually Grew up in Tempe Arizona. We moved out there when I was about six years old currently living in Burbank with my two daughters who are acting in Hollywood. So we're kind of supporting their acting careers and my wife and I between the two of us we have like nine children and and I believe twenty one grandkids. I'm losing count but fan. Yeah spreadsheets. He can keep track of their birthday. I need to spread sheets there. I totally need a spreadsheet. I can't keep it all in my head. Now my wife can and that she can she can. She's got a down so she just got. It depend on her. She's Nice Bridge. That's amazing So speaking of family is the book is actually based on a true story from your family. Can you give an overview of heart feel yes I can The story is actually a true story. we're kind of a surprise That we came across the story. Actually because we did not know this The events of this but The overview of the book itself is a story about a twelve year old Stanley William Miller. Who is my grandfather and in nineteen twenty in rural rural? Ohio of the southern ten which is a township outside of Warren. A terrible murder takes place. My great grandfather. George Hausky was murdered in his sleep. My Great Grandmother Stella was tied to cheer and She claimed that three men came in Bound and gagged her murdered. My great-grandfather stole six hundred dollars. Cash and made away with it while my grandfather who was twelve at the time was sent to fetch the share of to investigate the murder and everything that went on. And and so this is Kinda where. I found the story because I came across these old newspaper articles from nineteen twenty and the kind of chronicles investigation. And how this goes along and it took some bizarre turns and twists that were kind of unexpected So that's kind of where the story begins Later on Stanley and his siblings. They they find themselves in a notorious orphanage in nineteen twenty and so his. He works to try to escape that in and save his family and and raise his family and then the last part of the story is actually a love story where he finally meets my grandmother. My Irish grandma and And he finds his happiness in. She helps him resolve the issues of his life that he had to struggle through as a young boy with this he actually ran away to Chicago hop to train and found work in there in the steel mill and he he Also got involved in bootlegging. So the idea was to save enough money to go back and attempt to rescue his siblings out of that orphanage Keeton Amazing Story So how much of the story did you know going into reading articles and doing the research it was. It came as a total surprise. There my my dad who's eighty seven years old. He's still still GONNA be eighty seven years old This month in March actually. He didn't know this but our name you know we didn't know our name really wasn't Miller than actually Hausky. And the way we found this that was just Around Nineteen Ninety nine actually when these newspaper articles kind of popped up We had some cousins that were doing some family research for fun and they came across them and they sent those to us. Said you might WanNa read these. Because your name's really not Miller and so we just started kinda reading through these articles and we're just you know stunned. You know by the revelation. So they kinda sat there for a few years and then just really started kind of putting all this stuff together and doing the research Several years later a few years back my my father had been communicating with his cousin. And they've kind of gone back and forth exchange Information and she sent him some good documents some really valuable documents. That helped me with the writing the book. He wanted to write the book originally but he just felt he couldn't do it and he asked me to do it and he just kind of handed everything over to me so. I took those documents and there was gold in there because there was descriptions of the farm there was legal documents. There was a court documents and that allowed me to do even further research into into kind of all this story together and all the facts around it together To to build the story but we were totally in the dark with us. We are going to go ahead and take our first break of the podcast as we go to that break. I can't help but thinking that You know even though. My mother has done a ton of research into our family history. I would not necessarily be terribly surprised if there wasn't some crazy story from my grandparents passed because neither set of my grandparents would have talked about anything like this so we wouldn't have known. I mean they would have just pretended it never happened and we would never have heard anything about it so we're going to go ahead and take that break when we come back we'll be talking more with Kevin It d Miller about heart of steel stay tuned you're listening to the GS MC booker podcast. And I'll be right back. Golden state media concepts bring you the Bible study. Podcast reflect in journey the Bible S. together. "It had the opportunity in the second signing day to have the best signing day of anybody country. Like, they were poised to take it. You know, they had to top one hundred guys left on the board. And at Charles, more and more canton, you Richards. They got both of them, you know, committed sign of George victim slip into flip in Georgia was was brutal. I mean, they brutal blow for him because he had been retrieved. He'd been committed over longer than anybody else in this class and one of the top players in the state of Alabama. This is a guy that was going to be a boost to you know, automatically for whoever became the star quarterback at Auburn. And you know, real talented really could be one of the best receivers over in a while. And they they have they have a lot of good young is built around with Seth Williams and panting Schwartz, and he'd have been able to kind of plug in there. And I think it's find death wise wide receiver. But I think the optics of picking slip into Georgia was even an even bigger prob. Because it's where your base Ravel's who was just cleaned up in recruiting. And he they snatched him from at the last moment. And now you're kind of looking around like well now, you're not going to be a top ten class and people kind of get obsessed with the benchmarks, including us in the media. But you fall into about number eleven, and you didn't really close the strong as you wanted to again on the offensive line again. Like, I said it they're having a a doomsday scenario setting up in twenty twenty with their offense blind recruiting, and they got three guys, but they could have gotten a lot more. And that's why you've seen Oliver for this twenty twenty cycle. They've already picked up to offensive tackle commitments. 'cause has gone says, you know, they're gonna have to sign probably their biggest line class. They gotta play catch up because of all the problems. They've had the last few years. Justin, considering it's a rumor mill was correct. And I don't know it was or not I'll I'll be I'll get your thoughts. It was almost a coup attempt after the season even with the huge price tag on his head in terms of a buyout. What happened and? In how quiet down. Yeah. I think they're big money people at Auburn, the guys who, you know, donate a lot have a lot of influence. You know, some of them are not on more with Gus malzahn, and he had a couple of supporting in his corner. But there's a lot of smoke from a lot of people with a lot of power a lot of money. Think finally the situation is they were kind of too many too many cooks ditching obviously for Auburn at that. You know, it wasn't a unified to sit and went into him one way or another. So what happened was that thing? You know, you had a situation where you know, gusts stuck around because the price tag was so big and because it, you know, couldn't get a unified. Okay. Malzahn, definitely needs to go. It said, you know, he gets hold about her. And I it's been very very interesting. There was talk about leeann reports of from very good reporters to saying, you know, I guess my on had to take this and this in his new contract, and he comes up in December and says, you know, what? Nothing's changed. Everything's the same. But if you look. These last couple of months when when you see guests malzahn tires, he's apparently going to have to do another one with Greg Brown now leaving for Purdue they've gone younger and cheaper with their assistant coaches. So he makes you wonder if those demands were actually in place, or if this is actually what guest house on wanted to do in terms of building the staff L, let's take a realistic. Look at next year. You've given us the lay of the land with the line and the uncertainty of quarterback. We know we know way we know that the defense certainly will be respectable. "The judge decides on his own if he wants to steer towards a conviction or not and this judge saw that a better way to get a conviction was to let five more women testify at how cosby drugged them and sexually abused them so he decided to add that to the case which the first time wasn't let i didn't know it was the same judge i don't know that no was not they moved trial judge moore the first trial was out near pittsburgh so this trial was back in montgomery county i think norristown pennsylvania closer to the judges have an ego right and it would be exciting if you're the judge that nails bill cosby so what you do is you you wait the case as best you can within the parameters i heard some defense attorney on i think on fox when i was driving and he was just bloviating how the terrible this was that they allowed five women to testify none of these women never filed the charges these are unproven allegations how could they be allowed to testify in this case it has nothing to do with the details of these charges wa blah blah's like shut up big win bag here's trials in norristown witches north west of the city of philadelphia and i believe the first trial was out near pittsburgh so i don't think it was the same job the guy the guy that got the rap of cosby there is the district attorney kevin steel that's who he was talking about what he used the word ankole kevin steele don't remember the story goes back to two thousand and four when constanze said that she was assaulted by cosby and eventually she goes to the cops and the da and they supposedly thought we can't win with this woman of course there wasn't really any accusers then there were a few when we got to the civil matter but it wasn't the story it was then and then the da after me who gets the most credit here do you know for all of this and he guesses debbie john anybody ever guess who gets the most credit.
