"Obviously because the dragons den and then shark tank your personal brand. How would you the human. Because you're talking obviously as you can imagine listening first minutes of this conversation. I've been spending the last eleven years building communications death star to do everything you just talked about. Because i basically believed that the internet was going to squeeze the middle everything was going to be direct to consumer whether or not so t e commerce and that the ability the storytelling run. The arbitrage distributions was actually the game. So i like those chess moves of how they played out to me. I'm curious because i'm sure a lot of people. Were watching your curious right now. What you yourself within social media have you in these nine months. 'cause i'm sure you've been busy helping mentor. I'm sure you are constantly on calls with entrepreneurs fifty plus businesses. But what about you and your own personal brand. Have you picked up a platform. Have you started us. Lincoln from a content standpoint. Have you downloaded tiktok. You the man you the shark you. Where do you sip personally right now with with social or content creation whether i party because he grabbed the phone and do it or whether you live a little bit of the game i play. I've iraq ironically cedar for the first time in seven months. Have somebody producing for you. The personal brand. What's the production around that anything you know. Gary you are the role model for guys like me. You got it right. You guessed it right. The middle did get squeezed out. No question and i really got involved in social by two. And a half years ago. I hired a team of producers editors and storytellers to work within my own production company. Larry productions and what i learned. This is the paramount. Maybe maybe i'll give you credit for this because certainly watching you. You cannot bullshit people. You can't lie to them. You have to be totally transparent whether that's good bad or ugly. You gotta tell the truth. That is what a personal brand is built. Talk the minute. It's almost like the analogy are used. I teach this stuff. Now here in boston i do. I used to do lectures in person. But now i do them. Virtually at harvard and mit and temple and notre dame and talk about this stuff primarily graduating course of business students and engineers about entrepreneurship. It's like dating. You know when you fall in love and you meet somebody. And you're just empowered by that magic moment and i draw this analogy all the time. You just so wonderful and everybody should fall in love with whoever it's going to be. But then as time passes things change and maybe a year or two later. You're thinking about cheating okay. And you do now. You have a decision to make after you've done that you tell the truth to your significant other or do keep it a secret. And here's why i bring it up for business you're going to get caught one hundred percent of the time when you cheat you're gonna get caught because you didn't tell the truth. Your significant significant other can never look at you the same again. You've lost fifty percent of the equity in that relationship forever. it may not break up. You may go on but it will never the same business. The first time you get your customers your constituencies your shareholders. You lose fifty percent of the equity forever to tell the truth and take the hit and the ownership and transparency and intent around the. I'm sorry the that's such. That's absolutely right everything out of your mouth comma. There's also the half pregnant. Sorry and there's the real sorry and i think corporations the standards in which people want from companies is completely completely impossible for most companies. They may be good at the environment but they're bad at wages they like companies are are a convoluted animal. Just like people and this thought that you don't understand how to say sorry when you're trying to fix something people would rather dance. Look over there a bird instead of owning it and to your point in that lack of apology creates more damage. sometimes than even the event itself. Yes that's exactly. And i tell all my ceo's now look do not lie to the customers. Don't lie to your employees. don't lie to me. don't lie to anybody your shareholders. Even take the pain. Take the hit. Admit the mistake you made and you will build a relationship with customers. What we're learning online is if you have a direct relationship with the customer and you're honest with them and you tell them. Hey the protestant to be delayed or sore. You got a bad product will replace. It will give your money back. Whatever it is that communication ends up being very very valuable over time. Those customers stay loyal. We've learned that one hundred fold in our companies now and now in across the portfolio where now at forty eight percent directive revenue to customer. That's magic gary. That's frigging magic that because that's one hundred percent gross margin business. One of the we run out of time. We're gonna move on. Four pancreatic cancer so remembering the man with all the answers. Now extra bet you showed up in our households more consistently than any relative. Alex trebek's was not a game show host. He was like a friend today. The athletics match schneiderman on the connection between jeopardy host. Alex trebek's and packers quarterback aaron rodgers as a kid you grew up watching him in idolizing him and spending every weeknight with him so then to see him in person here that iconic voice in person is really special for rodgers star combination having a connection to somebody s the meaningful stall. But when you meet that person they have the president and the charisma that you have hoping they and definitely athletic. I'm davidson and i'm under sculptor. It's friday november thirteenth. And this is the lead so matt you recently talked to aaron rodgers about role that jeopardy has played in his life. What was his experience with the show. Growing up yeah. He told me about how when he was a little kid. He'd be staying at his grandparents house finished dinner early. And you retire to living room for jeopardy and grandpa's in his grandma's hurt sure i'm on the ground and that's just kind of a we. I guess you could say big trivia buff so that kind of drew him to it and alex trebek's became one of the iconic voices of his childhood a connection with certain people for my show and i've been fortunate enough to meet a few of them but it's kinda voices on my gv. I'm talking about john. Men summerall about how frank. And then on. Monday nights before bob barker on prices riot as he got into the league he said even if there would be obligations tend to in green bay on weeknights. He would record it. I mean literally friends of mine and visit dated. Six o'clock at my house is by had any friends over. If i was dating someone. If i had any family in town they knew that six. Pm in green bay was jeopardy time. So they'd better not make any other obligations so he was a real deal jeopardy diehard what stood out to him about alex trebek's as a game show host. He said really his cadence and his sense of humor and his ability to not make fun of but have a great back and forth with. The contestants are really enjoyed the often awkward coming into the first commercial. It'd be the contestants is reaction to so many of them is what made this show so great. Now just the thank you often have some nerds out. There were really nervous about what they do. It's called mary. Core hip hop it murdered. Core hip hop. It's people who identify as nerdy rapping about the things. They love video games science fiction having a hard time meeting romantic partners. It's really catchy. And fun losers. In other words. I know teasing you. And roger said that nature of trebek's the one that was playful with the contestants and related to them a little bit rather than just being a robot reading off of a sheet because it was his job for thirty minutes every night was what drew him to him so much before he became a professional. Football player did aaron rodgers do trivia. Was he the guy at the bar at trivia night. I'm sure he was. You know he's been on a couple of game shows. You probably know it then on multiple shows jeopardy hundred dollar ear man. Eight small felt things on a billiard table lopez jennifer lawrence i. I'm sure when he went to cal berkeley and he was the big man on campus there as the quarterback he was still going to trivia night at bars. I mean he challenges himself intellectually in a lot of different ways. I did a story with him last year seeing if he could name all thirty seven players. He's turned touchdowns to in his career. Rodgers could remember the exact route. Some no name tight end ran in two thousand and eleven. Because that was the tight ends only touchdown pass from rodgers so it was really impressive. Seeing how much he's able to remember and his abilities as a quarterback. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say his ability to process information and remember kind of the tendencies of certain defensive. Players definitely transfers over to a game show. Aaron got the chance to meet. Alex trebek's five years ago when he was a contestant on celebrity jeopardy. What was it like for him to meet the game show host. He grew up watching yet. It was big for him. Because you think aaron rodgers you know. You wouldn't be florida starstruck by anyone. This was in two thousand fifteen when he met. Alex trebek's super bowl. He'd already one to mvp's but aaron said he was the one of the few people that left me starstruck. And i think to be star star can have stayed combination of having a connection to somebody. That's that's deep. Meaning for a stall jack but when you meet that person they have the presence in the charisma then you kind of hope they would and you definitely did i so excited trying to keep it together as a kid. He grew up watching him in idolizing him and spending every weeknight with him so then to see him in person here that iconic voice in person it was really special for rodgers and he just loved more so than anything. How down to earth travek was how conversational he was. It wasn't something like okay. You're here on my show getting your position and i'll do my job. He was the guy you think he is on tv. All the things that make you feel like you care about the conversation. I'm talking about old school stuff. I'm talking about striking yet. Shaking your hand looking. I contact in the conversation. I felt like present in the moment. So aaron rodgers this trivia. Buff jeopardy fanatic. It's finally on the show. How did he prepare for it. Was he like in a room going over tape. His preparation for this show was unbelievable. He was watching. Not just the ken jennings and brad rudders of the world. But he was watching random contestants just to see how they approached the game. He watched tape of other contestants just to see where they place their hands to buzzing quick enough did they stay in the same category. Did they go. Two hundred four hundred six hundred or did they bounce around to try and throw off the other contestants so he came in with a very set strategy especially to go up against mr wonderful kevin o'leary from shark tank. That was his main competition. And i'm not gonna say he wanted to win it more than he wants to win a regular week ten. Nfl game against the jaguars like they have coming up this weekend but he took this very seriously show was a dream. But you don't think we're there any highlights or any surprises any categories where aaron rodgers did surprisingly well. Yeah leader of the pack. He obviously did very well in that in three thirty four bc. This great guy. Lead thirty five thousand greeks into persia. Aaron was alexander the great correct twelve hundred. The one question he did get wrong. Which was the final jeopardy question was it showed a black and white picture of two men riding old school motorcycles and the writing question i believe was what company made these. Aaron is looking pretty happy now. Did he come up with the correct response when he wrote down who are earned standing young and the answer was hardly and davidson and he got it wrong and then there's that brief moment where alex trebek's says well let's see how much wagered and rogers had a wry smile on his face and kind of smart looking at alex. Trebek's like i already know i won. This caused him too much. No he is the winner today. Charity the tape and he said he still has the little trophy. They gave him after winning celebrity jeopardy and that big fifty thousand dollar check the money that went to charity after he won. He still has those in his house. Check now with me.
