Supreme Court Rules New York Prosecutors Can Access Trump’s Tax Returns
"Reactions to the Supreme Court's dual rulings on President Donald Trump's finances. In one case, the Supreme Court said the president's accounting for must turn over his tax returns to a Manhattan grand jury. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy questions the prosecutor's motivation seems much more political than anything else. In the second case, the Supreme Court said a lower court will decide whether Congress can compel the president to release his financial records. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sees this as good news Supreme Court, including the president's appointees have declared that He is not above the law. There is no timetable for when the lower courts might rule on that case. Linda CANYON
Mnuchin Says U.S. Will Consider Another Round of Stimulus Checks
"Some good news for those who are hoping for another stimulus check from the federal government. Eric Watson is a congressional reporter for Bloomberg Very strong. Steve Mnuchin came out a two White House today and said, they're looking very strongly. Another stimulus package looking another round of direct payments checks the $1200 check two individuals They're good looking at help for businesses and possibly some age of state lost revenue. We also seeing Kevin McCarthy's a House Republican leader. He did a press conference this morning as well as saying that he and which McConnell, the leader in the Senate, are looking at doing a package by the end of July, I think is very much still alive issue. You know, even though the unemployment rate is down to 11% still historically very high and the president's motivated with the election coming up to make sure that that number gets even lower pain, Wally says there is ongoing disagreement over additional federal aid for states and localities. Republicans. They're worried that Some governors are going to try to fudge the numbers and make up for physically responsible policies intentions in the past, they want to see really documented Cove. It related losses, expenses and really narrow that down. The Democrats propose a trillion dollars in that age. Another big point of contention is on unemployment insurance at the top priority for for liberals in the House. They want to see the $600 per week bump that a lot of unemployed people are receiving. Now through the end of July. They wanted it extended, possibly the next March, while linking that to state's unemployment rate, So if things do look better in Texas or another place Like that, then that would drop off. But Republicans are growing in many parts of the country, especially, you know, in the upper Midwest or elsewhere where wages or much Well, our people are receiving a significant premium over their normal salary. Your wages By staying in unemployment that could hinder the ability of especially small businesses soak your people back to the workforce. So that is a real bone of contention. I think it's going to be a really tough one to crack. Ah, but at least one Ah, Senator yesterday was telling me on the Republican side with me. We'll go to $200 will go a little bit lower, so let's get to a dollar number. I think it's a possibility for common ground Zaric wasin from

"Up about GOP leader in the house Kevin McCarthy so the only way these investigations and the only way we can really focus on peace and prosperity and creating jobs and opportunities for Americans is if people go out and two hundred and sixty three days not only vote for the president but they better elect Republicans are over these Democrats especially want this thirty or forty districts in particular that I think Democrats are vulnerable so the house could be one back we have some tough Senate race is one in Colorado one in Arizona main is gonna be a tough race and I think that if people want to and the analyst bickering an investigation that impeachment talk that's the only way that's the only way I see what you're doing the president discussed this if you vote for the president and you let the Democrats stand stand power it's tight the house dot com if you want to end all this and we are doing such an amazing job in recruiting because I'll tell you what this impeachment everything else you've got like Wesley hull running in Houston went up hello Apaches went to west point we've got amazing women out there actually Hanson in Iowa that we're having more women run in the Republican Party than in the history was shattering every record because they see this country and they want to take it back and they want to make sure they have a Congress that actually works with the president instead of their only agenda is impeachment is unbelievable well I always thought that if you actually serve the people that put you in office that that would be good politics and you'll be rewarded for doing so to reward people that have fixated only on hating the president would be a disservice to themselves but again I don't I only one vote and my vote unfortunately is in the state in New York not as powerful people voting in North Carolina and Michigan and Pennsylvania Wisconsin it didn't get one more motivation if we took the majority Nancy Pelosi would not be speaker and Adam ship with no long a beach chair of the Intel committee and he could no longer keep lying I agree with that too all right Kevin McCarthy two hundred sixty three days will be following this as closely as anybody on TV and radio and we always appreciate your time thank you for being with us right eight hundred nine four one Shawn if you want to be a part of the program quick break we'll come back we'll get to a lot of your calls coming up straight ahead as we continue former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe mass have all charges from the justice department dropped correspondent Shimon procure pass with more the US attorney's office the Washington field US attorney's office which is the same US attorney's office that is handling the Roger stone case and now the Michael Flynn case as well and has been handling the Andrew McCabe case they sent a letter to enter McCabe's attorney where they say that after careful consideration the government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against Andrew McCabe Attorney General William Barr has ordered an investigation into the case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn as well as other politically sensitive cases a New York juries convicted Michael Levin Audi of extortion have a not a also faces charges of stealing from clients he had one time represented.

"It's Sunday morning with us. The most powerful Congressman Republican congressman on Capitol Hill Kevin McCarthy or leader Good Morning Leader McCarthy. How are you? I'm doing well. John how are you doing. I'm doing great raked. And as we spoke in the past I think this is one of the most important elections in our country's history. How do you feel about the events that happened in the past week? Well I will tell you I think the president has made this world safer and made sure America was safer When you look at the individual this terrorist that The president taking out the six hundred American lives that he had taken that were defending our nation and then just recently another American he killed in the attack on the embassy the downing of our drone I mean I thought this president been very patient with Iran but I think he sent a very clear message to them and now we're seeing de escalation which I think is appropriate and Making sure that this administration has a red line and they follow through on it like they did. I think that's the only thing that Iran understands I agree with you. One hundred ten percent and Nobody Americans don't really understand skin Where Nancy Pelosi is going where especially when she wants to take a vote on the war powers act that means? The president of the United States can't do anything without asking them. I isn't that crazy. That is very crazy. Nothing that we had ever done to President Obama. Either remember when when Summa bin Laden was killed Republicans and Democrats together celebrated that and thank the president for his actions General Portray says that all Mani is bigger than Bin Laden and the Democrats cannot give this president any credit for it. Iran had escalated at this time and again. And that's what your listeners to understand remember the downing of our drone the bombing of the tankers the bombing of the refinery the killing of an American the attack on our embassy. This is all in short timeframe within the last six months and somehow America escalated this. It was a defense. The president has all the right to do it and the most telling of all this the resolution. They put it on in the form of what they did. They did something that's called a concurrent resolution which is non-binding. Unbinding has no power whatsoever. This is the form that we used to have the Soapbox Derby on Capitol Hill. This is when we use concurrent resolutions Russians and lying to the American public. Like they're doing something I mean. All they're doing is weakening our country by telling Iran that we were divided that the president doesn't doesn't have the support of the president doesn't have the power to act when he does even some of the c. a Democratic senators Feinstein from California has started to question Pelosi since she gets a message. You know she's really should with Dianne. Feinstein who is the senator from California forty but more importantly is Nancy. Pelosi's Home Count Senator from San Francisco when she said all this talk of urgency. And when you don't send it means it's is not urging if it's urgent send it over if not don't send it at all. And then she nancy Pelosi had her own chairman of Armed Services Committee. Say It's time he just made this comment. Oh yesterday that it's time to send over the only person that doesn't think so Nancy Pelosi but she told the American people. It was so urgent ascend. I think what she's really saying now is in a very very clear message that her case is so weak that she knows. There's not a reason for impeachment. She's almost embarrassing. To the case that she has of why she should send it to the Senate and overall the American people other than the people in in Washington. Just feel that we're at a standstill on on the vote on the trade deal from Canada and Mexico which is jointly pro. You know everybody's for it. Why can't go food? Well you know It has moved forward in one committee in the Senate Parliamentarian over there has listed. I think another five committees so the timing. It's trying to get that through holding impeachment papers which I do not believe she has the power to do continues to Harm America Erica from the basis of getting any work done because what happens once the impeachment papers go there. That's the only thing the Senate can do it then. It would jeopardize the trade agreement by the timing of wanted to get it done now in our country on Friday The jobs are all time high unemployment all-time all time low consumer confidence all time high. Don't Democrats see this. I'm not sure what they're seeing. I mean they get so frustrated just because the president has been so successful I think as a country especially in situations like this. We shouldn't look this as Republicans or Democrats. We should look at it. As as Americans how Democrats who brought up a war powers act look at those six hundred gold star families those mom and tell them that they think it's right around after what this individual had done and the number of Americans e to the other thing that happened on Friday morning was that the Iraqi. Prime Minister said sister's been a vote about the United States pulling out troops. Maybe we should have a discussion. Where where does he stand? Well I I'm not sure we'll have. It would be very interesting to see the aircraft that was shot down Where do we go from here? Well this is going to be very interesting You have Iran. WHO's not releasing the black box? I think there's a reason for it and now they ran to clean up the debris because it's very clear from the videos that seems as though Iran actually shot down a commercial official jet seventy six to maybe Passes the book to just. I'm innocent. Lives being killed again again by Iran. Why what do we have to do to move off country folk? Well I think the first thing we have to do is focus on the issues about that. America needs from prescription drugs from surprise billing continuing to build our economy to be stronger getting US MCA pass. We're more job needed. Her Konami believes stronger. Focusing on what's going forward from the environment and others those are all the issues that we would like to work on in Congress. The sad part is with this new. The Democrat majority. They have offered more subpoenas than they have created loss. VAT is the history that would be having now. We're into a new year and we're back to the same thing just more or investigations. We've got this challenge and Iran. And we've got an Intel Committee that focuses all their time on impeachment which isn't their jurisdiction instead of focusing on keeping this this country safe. It's Sunday morning Americans sitting back. I'd breakfast and having their the coffee What else would you like to tell all Americans I would just like to thank them and Tell you one thing I think we were all very fortunate to live in America. America's more than a country. America's an idea an idea of self governance we were unique in the essence of this country. It was conceived in liberty and dedicated proposition that we are all equal. We believe in a more perfect union and striving towards that I think the more divide only harmse's find find ways that we work together for the common good and that's one of the made new goals that I have here in Congress House. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy Carthy. I agree with you one hundred ten percent and I reach out to all comic sense. Democrats are things like Americans and not necessarily party lines finds a happy New Year and God bless America. Thank you so much this is the round table. We'll be right back..

"Good Morning America. This is the cats roundtable John Cats Matisse here. Send me morning what's going on in Washington who it gives us those inches then house. Republican leader Congressman Kevin McCarthy Good Morning Lead. I just I call you leader. How how are you you could just call me Kevin. I'm doing well John. How are you good. What a message going on over there. where do we begin. We'll be able to judiciary sir. I think we should now remember congressman. Nadler the way a member becomes a chairman of a committee they literally run for it within their own conference and when Congressman Nadler started running to become chair of judiciary committee he put out some of the arguments why he should be chairman and you know what one of them was that he would be the very best person for impeachment and if you notice this is not where the country she wants to go. This is not where Democrats WANNA go. They'd had to pull the sit. There are no facts behind to have an impeachment and what does he do. He creates an imaginary impeachment. Teach me now there's internal turmoil within the Democratic Party. Some Democrats are wondering whether why he should stay chairman. I've heard talk of them wanting to remove him as chair Nancy Pelosi the speaker had to have her own conference and she said I don't care if you leak this criticizing he and his staff I mean they are in an all without war because of the way he has mismanaged the committee. This committee has jurisdiction over the border. He's done nothing immigration. This committee has jurisdiction and over social media the tech companies and others. He's done nothing about that. This committee has the oversight when it comes to the inspector generals who who the Inspector General Horowitz who just did a review of the DOJ this is the committee and he refuses to bring them forward every normal Komo congress in the past regardless of who was in charge if it's inspector general had a report like this would bring the expecter general into question but I just up to Pelosi to step to the plate and do something I would think so I mean she is one in the basis. Remember how fearful we were. Pelosi running the Democrats 'cause he was so far to the left. The Democrats are not the same party they were in the past there now the Socialist Democrats. That's what they call themselves that uh-huh Nancy Pelosi from San Francisco is now the moderate in the new Socialist Democrat Party. She has the title Speaker but she no longer has the power. The new four freshman Kinda run the show. You're absolutely right. It looks crazy. Now what's even crazier. The New York Times minds writes in a row news report that wasn't proven about justice cavern and all of a sudden they wanNA impeach him to yes and remember what the New York Times has done in the media has done in so many different ways they went and they removed the facts because they'd they've ear responsible for even what they've done and I see it continue to go forward. It's very sad. It is very sad I don't know what's going to happen at the New York Times. I mean author cells. Parker is no longer in charge. I guess he put his son in charge and things things got worse. Really has what's GonNa Happen. I mean this is between the trade agreement with Canada and Mexico Exco. Every American wants it. Most of the Democrats want. I mean it's good for America. It's good for North America. It's good for all of us on the US MCA the United States and Mexico Canada agreement which everybody supports which I don't know why that was was not passed before we left on the East on the summer. Break Mexico has already ratified months ago Canada's waiting for us and if anybody would study about our trading partners do you know Mexico in the last month is overtaken to become number one candidate or number two and here here. We are with the discussion with China trying to get a more level playing field if we had. US MCA passed before the president had to sit down with Xi Jinping in November ember are we would even be stronger in our negotiations with China. Why wouldn't we put the country. I I think the Democrats are more concerned about tearing the president down instead of building America up we also the president promised the Brits that they went through with brexit that we would make an agreement with them toe and it's a natural agreement or among among friends. Why don't we want to be strong in our whole own continent here I mean I I just don't understand nobody can tell me why would oppose it. It would only create at a minimum one hundred and eighty thousand jobs. They say it could be higher half a million Why wouldn't we WANNA make our economy stronger. GDP EP would grow. I don't understand the only reason why this couldn't be brought up because the speaker has all the power went to call it up is simply. Blaine Politics Horrible Justice Department. I mean we we keep talking about horrible more horrible roble most horrible the Justice Department Inspector General the recommendations for a criminal action or whatever what do you think is how does how is that. GonNa sort out well. I am very hope four and I've got a lot of respect for attorney general bar. I think he is a man who doesn't play politics who just does follows the rule of the law and wherever the evidence take some he goes but the one thing I found as well too is that I believe people need to be held accountable because you look at report after report from FIS and others when we're hopefully seeing that one come through this is the closest this country has ever come to having a coup and we can never allow any person new becomes President Republican Democrat Green Party or other to go through the fear of what just happened we cannot allow individuals to do that again and we need to get to the bottom of it and people need to be held accountable call me it looks like very very very true and then the number two became inside the FBI. I mean now. They're moving forward to put charges against him here. He is is a number two in law enforcement. Trying people are putting forth for trial for lying when he's lying to the American public the what were the what are the Democrats do they had them for a fundraiser that goes beyond Pale. Why would you hold this man to any Osteen Dean Law Enforcement. You're supposed to uphold the law when he was lying. What's worse. CNN hired him. Yes that shows. There's a lot to what the media's doing. I would not think this individual get rewarded for lying leader of a quasi. What else would you like to tell the American public. I mean Saudi Arabia do the Iranians do it. All indication Asian intelligence right now looks like Iran did attack Saudi Arabia. We've attacked him before we know. They attacked tankers. We know that Iran is the individuals who fun terrorism from around the world who foster it and try to make it grow the one thing that we have found a win after tried to attack five percent of the supply of oil around the world they wanted the price to two hundred dollars at any given time before it would have the difference is America America's becoming energy independent we when Republicans wearing the majority we lifted the ban and what has happened. We now expert to thirty countries. We now have producing more oil or now number. One in the world that only makes more jobs bakes makes us stronger makes the environment more sound because of the way we produce it instead of others but also geo politically it makes the world safer now you cannot have. Iran continue to do this. They shut down one of our own unmanned planes and they are trying to push the world into a war. This is a time that the world should unite against Iran. Well agree the net we got a minute. What else would you like to tell the American people nearly. I'll tell the American people just just a short time ago. There are two special elections in North Carolina Republicans won both of them in you should look at that. North Carolina nine a seat that Republicans only one by nine hundred votes in twenty the eighteen just want it by four thousand. If I was a democrat I'd be worried because a number of Democrats ended up voting for Republicans because they've now seen the policy that this is no longer anger the Democratic Party. They're Socialist Democrats. They believe in total control Medicare for all to actually control the healthcare instead of modernizing the healthcare care when you look at what they wanna do in the process for the environment. I'm looking at Republicans wanting to clean up the environment where ninety percent Santa all the plastic comes from ten rivers in the world. He looked at the Republicans in Congress going after those ten rivers to get ninety percent up I look at when it comes to the economy automate. This is the strongest economy we've been in the last fifty years and the part. I love most about it is it's reached. All of America doesn't matter your gender your color your skin. You have a better economy today for you than at any given time and that's exciting but we want to make sure we build on that. When I watched the democratic debate there wasn't one in question for those running for president on the economy are on a peach mint but when I watched the Democrats Socialists in the house all they WanNa talk about is an imaginary imaginary impeachment I think I think this country believes we need to our elected. Officials focus on finding common ground focus focus on making sure tomorrow is better than today and that will happen with a new Congress leader McCarthy thank you very much for coming on on and how American people what's going on and thank you for your leadership and thank you for being great American thank you. This is the catch roundtable we write back..

"But while we seek cooperation there is one core principle upon which we will not compromise Republicans always choose personal freedom over government control. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California and the speaker's chair on the opening day of the two hundred sixteenth congress setting the stage for the Republicans in the house being in a minority position with him as their leader. We're going to learn more about Kevin McCarthy and his approach to leadership by dipping into C Span's archives. As those of you who watch us. No, we have a ongoing video record of members of congress throughout their legislative history. And we thought would be interesting to assemble that for a look back at what brought Kevin McCarthy to this position of power. And what we might expect from him in the next couple of years. I'll let me introduce the two reporters who are going to help us. Stay this. Scott Wong as returning to C span. Today's senior staff writer for the hills. Scott, welcome back. Nice to see you again. And Evan Hafer is a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times. I've got to ask both of you starting with you. And if you would explain how you've been covering Kevin McCarthy and for how long shore I've been covering. Mccarthy for since before two thousand and four when he became the Republican leader in the California assembly at the time Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor. I was working in the Sacramento bureau. The state was in a major budget crisis which continued for some time, and he sort of led the minority Republicans resisting any any tax increases. And then he he went on to go to congress later, and I started working in Washington about six years ago, and I've been covering while I've been in Washington, and Scott how about you. I've been covering Capitol Hill for the last eight years, but Kevin McCarthy specifically since two thousand fourteen when I joined the hill newspaper, Capitol Hill publication and started covering House Republicans, then the speaker of the house was John bainer, but we've had some turnover over the years and McCarthy has been sort of the consistent force throughout that time. And so now after four years in the majority, I'm covering Kevin McCarthy. The and the minority. Well, the consistent force and coupled with a pretty quick rise both in the California assembly and in the house of representatives for both of you. What is the secret to his success? Why has he advanced so quickly I in his home state assembly and then in the congress. Well, Kevin McCarthy was very good. And California's very good here at seeing what people want, and what people need and doing things for them, politically, helping them raise money either. He's he's somewhat chameleon like ideologically. He he sees sort of where the party is going, and he's very good at helping people elevate their political careers and people get indebted to him. He's not a firm ideologue. He's more of a centrist when he was in California. And then he sort of hitched his wagon Trump more lately here and the party when he helped the tea party's takeover of congress in in two thousand ten and he's just very shrewd at looking at the electoral map, seeing who needs what helping people the donors are comfortable with him in ways that they may not be comfortable with some of the more active activists elements in the party, but he sort of bridges that gap. He's a liaison for the tea party to the big money faction. And a lot of people are just who who may not be comfortable with each other or comfortable with him. He's a very good tactician. And he's obviously a survivor, and that's that's why he's he's continued to excel even even as as some of this. Some of the people who promoted in the policies promoted, you know, have not done. So well, as we know California lost half of its Republican delegation in the last election there down from fourteen members in the house to seven very large California allegation yet Kevin McCarthy is still in leadership. What can you add to that? Well, he has the relationships on Capitol Hill, and he works hard at developing those relationships. So he finds out what certain members need he studies there congressional districts. He's as ever mentioned, he's tactician. He studies congressional maps. He reads political almanacs not for fun, but to help him advance his career. So he learns about what the specific needs of members. Are he travels the country like nobody else on Capitol Hill? He's going to districts attending fundraisers stumping for his colleagues currying favor for his colleagues for moments when he needs their support to run for leadership. Those are his strengths. What are the skills? That's maybe some past recent leaders have had that Kevin McCarthy might look to others because he doesn't feel as confident in those areas himself short it's interesting because he talked during a house of cards. He would talk a lot about how Kevin Spacey came in. And we'll talk to him about how. Year run this this office, you wanna with an iron fist, and he was whip at the time and some cards started that was Kevin Spacey's role in in congress. And he doesn't have the tools of a Tom DeLay. He's you know, he can't rule the hammer. The earmarks, of course, don't exist anymore. That's the Republicans the leadership used to be able to use to kind of Lord over their members and keep them in line. So he doesn't have aren't fist, and and that for better or worse as the way the way he runs things, and that makes it harder to keep everyone in line painter at the same problem and Paul Ryan, of course, at the same problem. And so these guys are not Newt Gingrich. They're not they're not Tom DeLay. And it's it's made it harder to to hurt all those cats and the like those two years before him he will still have that really divided conference in the house of representatives, the hard core conservative tea party, and the moderates are people more willing to compromise. So what does he have available to them? Well, when he does seem to have available to him are the tools are retiring about in terms of he's sort of believes that you should let the party go in the direction at wants to go with that. It's not his job to have one solid vision. And push everyone along that may be messy. It may be we may fall short on some some votes like when they didn't vote specifying Bill that that year, which was was pretty wild. Because we hadn't seen formed ills usually something that everyone can get behind an impasse. And when when he was I think whip at the time. They fell short what can this guy count votes? And he would argue well in the end we actually because we couldn't pass that and we can pass other measures. Negotiate for more. We got more for Republicans. And so the process was Missy it didn't maybe look good for him. But Republicans got more out of it. And they got where they were trying to go in the end. Anyway. So he'll argue that for the good of the caucus. They are making progress. Even if it doesn't look as meeting tiny, and he doesn't look like as an effective leader as some of the previous Republican leaders and. Well, we're going to see a lot of him on the Sunday talk shows and out in public as the face of the Republicans in congress. He's not he's not a great orator. He's had problems in the past. Actually, a major problem when he talked about the Benghazi committee when he was running for speaker back in two thousand fifteen and got into some trouble. When he suggested on Fox News that that the Benghazi committee was mainly there for political purposes to take down Hillary Clinton, and he got into a lot of trouble for that contributed to his failing to generate enough support to become speaker. So he has had some problems in the past. But he does do quite a bit of cable TV I think specifically on Fox News on FOX business on CNBC. And I think we'll probably see him out front, especially on a lot of those more conservative business oriented networks, and I'm going to turn to you. And have you give viewers his biographical background? Where was he born where raised where he goes? Well, he's a Bakersfield native had been there forever. His historic was that when he was nineteen he bought a lottery ticket. He he won. I think it was five thousand dollars. It was like his first time playing the lottery he used that money to open a deli. I think it was called Kevin owes his big thing was making his own bread. And he said he was very successful at that business. He also went by cars, I think at auction and sell them, but but even with this background and with his father who was the firefighter in being the Bakersfield native, there's also a very sort of a decidedly political background that he had. I mean, he he saw Bill Thomas's mentor. He started working for him in his office. I think at the same time he he was opening deli. And so he got involved in politics pretty early. I mean, he was he was nineteen at that time. Eventually became his chief of staff and a very traditional into politics. Thomas was a great mentor for him and connecting with all kinds of donors. He was a natural. Building those relationships, and then he made it to the California assembly. He was in his thirty s and the time, and he very quickly became the assembly leader was it was it was a time sort of like his times in congress where you had this rebellion going on within the party, the sort of establishment centrists who've been running at were we're getting a lot of grief from the wasn't the tea party at the time. But it was the scanty tax faction that was driven by talk radio to do not bend on taxes. Do you not agree to raising taxes? Even though McCarthy was not from that. That part of the Republican party. He knew how to work with these people want to give them what they wanted and the. The establishment guy. Who was I think he was either the sixties or seventies the time. His name was was Dave Cox. And then next thing we knew McCarthy who was just sort of this likable guy who was known in California for. You know, he he had a house that they all rented. There were a bunch of Republicans who who lived there when they were in Sacramento and. He was friends when the pollster Frank Lenzi. They would watch tapes of themselves talking in the legislature and great each other on how they were doing, and you know, just because people liked him. He he got this leadership position. And that was in two thousand four well, it's got long the very earliest that he is in our archives is seven years before I came to congress. This is two thousand at the GOP convention, and let's watch Kevin McCarthy and his earlier incarnation..

"Need to slap buzzing ahead. And I love that man. Well, I mean, he was in a really good. All right. But listen, this is what happens on Q house minority leader smarmy Kevin McCarthy vowed to take disciplinary action against Omar this week. He said in the face of abdication of leadership Republicans will take action to ensure the house speaks out. It gets Adrian really you didn't say anything about first of all Nancy Pelosi lead on this immediately and released a statement that said she had spoken with Omar the two of them. Agreed. We must use this moment to move forward as we were jacked anti-semitism and all forms, but Bob, you're right. You're piece is just all about we cannot live within these double standards. You were saying the fact that Warren's ancestry still a thing after all this time is another staggering example of the double standard exempt since the two thousand sixteen election as long as Trump continues to flood the zone with crazy bombs preventing any individual scandal from occupying headlines, he's able to continue serving as president contrasting. We warned is all but written off because of one thing it's not even a real thing. And by the way, please tell us. Because you wrote about it the Kevin McCarthy native Americans candle which thousand times worse. This is absolutely incredible. And this story again, this is a great example of how the flooding of the down from Donald Trump wipes away. Any other news story that that emerges, including this one where the minority leader of the house of representatives, the Republican leader on the house side Kevin McCarthy who has trouble talking occasionally has brother-in-law and only when in Hungary. Yes. Oh my God. He was up for speaker of the house irony even factors that his brother-in-law received seven point nine million dollars in no-bid federal contracts because Kevin McCarthy's extraordinarily Caucasian-looking brother-in-law claim to be claimed to have Cherokee ancestry, and so therefore he received a federal money set aside for disadvantaged minorities, and it just so happened that this with these contracts were given to Kevin McCarthy's brother-in-law for projects inside Kevin McCarthy's congressional district while in California, first of all he says, he's he's one. He he's one eighth Cherokee. Right, which he claimed membership. The northern Cherokee nation has no federal or state recognition as the legitimate tribe. And it's considered a fraud by leaders of tribes that have. General recognition you said, we don't remember this micro scandal because it wasn't picked up and mercilessly beaten to death on cable news of the Democrats are saying, you know, Pocahontas and making genocide jokes about the trail of tears, and that's one of the reasons, and and so what happens is on the other side when the press picks up some remarkable Donald Trump has said about Elizabeth Warren some horribly racist thing he's posted on Twitter, then that metastasized into conventional wisdom Donald Trump says, oh, that's a disqualifier for her to ever be president. And then people start to believe that because it's reported out of context of everything that he said, certainly, and then made it out as if you know, this is a disqualifying thing. Suddenly Donald Trump's screechy opinion amped up on speed becomes the the conventional wisdom inside the beltway, then merging outside the beltway. And then everyone believes that. And so that's that's the the extraordinarily and I hate to use Trump's own term. But it's it's extraordinarily unfair. It's unjust that this is the kind of climate that we're playing and where he gets to do whatever the hell they want and by the way. So Elizabeth Warren made a surprise appearance yesterday at a native American conference to huge cheers. She. So. Yeah. In your speech, you call for congress to take more action on native issues. Most of a remarks were spent praising native women saying that she was there to lift up native voices. I like the Email thing I keep looking for where there there is. Right. So she apologized Cherokee nation for releasing a DNA test independent approved she has native ancestry as I understand it. I guess these are sensitive issues tribal citizenship versus ancestry. But the fact is she does have native American blood. I mean, I don't even understand. And then she listed her race's American Indian when she filled out a form for the Texas State bar. That's not going to get her unless you pass the bar. That's not going to do anything identifiable advantage. Right. Exactly. She didn't gain any advantage. Like Kevin McCarthy dead. Right. She's from Oklahoma. And we're of course, remember the definition of the Cherokee has driven from Georgia to Oklahoma the trail of tears by Trump's political hero. Andrew Jackson, by the way. And she was told by her ancestors or family members, the yeah, we have Cherokee blood, and so she's just she's simply repeating that. As a fact that she's been told fighter parents, by the way. Before all these DNA tests, the merge, the something you could just buy a bond, Amazon or whatever. You know, these are things that we just took on faith from our family members. Listen, you probably heard Travis say, he's relatives are from Oklahoma. He's been told the same thing we're both doing twenty three and me. Our new sponsor, we're gonna find someone wants to know if you're Choctaw which I want because then we can keep playing Billy Joel gala. I believe there is some of my mom's side over and over again Choctaw ridge. Okay. Okay. Me we're gonna find out if my unit of Ukrainian carriage. Lupine? Pharrell? Yeah. This is probably why have somebody coyotes? They are probably they know that the air drawn said I am related. Yes. This is the only lives down there. Oh. Fact is that Trump and even Trump junior. I mean, they love to pounce on this graph and talking about how. Elizabeth Warren is a great big fraud. And. Ridiculous picked up and quoted says the biggest fraud in the world. Yeah. My God Trump university. I mean, every single Trump organization from business is being investigated right now for among other things fraud. Thank you. You know, we could talk about the twenty five million dollar payout. The Donald Trump had to write a check for proven that Trump university was scamming all of its students. Loser. Teachers excuse me Bob for a second. I'm.

"The hour on first light. Sometimes I feel like we're playing name that tune. But the House Republicans have their eyes on one of their own Iowa. Congressman Steve king, Steve king, probably not too happy this morning because House Republicans are blocking him from serving on any committees in the new congress. They're punishing him for his comments about white supremacy. The thing is if you're a member of congress committees that all the where all the work is done without committee assignments, you have no power. I mean, you can still have an office that helps your constituents get their social security checks, or maybe help a veteran get some some medical assistance or dealing with any problems that relate to the federal government. But you have no power because any legislation is coming out of committees. You can introduce any bills that you want, but they go right into a committee. And if you're not on the committee, you have no power to write to change things to Mark up. You can vote I guess on the floor of that's about it. And so the question is is that enough punishment is that too much punishment? And as I said a few moments ago, you know, he's been saying these kind of things for years and years and years Steve king seems to have an attitude that the white race is superior race and others are therefore inferior. He makes it makes it very clear he does not want immigrants coming in and changing the character of America. He says it over and over again, frankly, his latest comments didn't seem all that out of line. But maybe it's just the, you know, the time where the Republicans have finally said we've had enough we don't want this in our ranks. What do you think about that? Call us at eight hundred seven three six three six six six. So the House Republicans who and they do house. The minority leader Kevin McCarthy, he's actually he'll be working with the steering committee folks on terms of who gets what assignments for the Republicans, and they're saying you don't get any committee assignments. So it's not that the Democrats are doing that to Steve king is the Republicans. What House Democrats are doing they're seeking formal punishment for king? Although it's really just a introducing a resolution disapproving of him. And so they want to condemn white supremacy white nationalism, and that could be voted on today. But that's really just symbolic gesture saying we don't like what you're doing actually removing him from the committee's is where the that's the real the real damage to his ability to get anything done. He can talk can vote he conservative constituents back home in their relations with the federal government. But that will be about it. So how did we get here? Let's check in now with Linda Kenyon. Our Capitol Hill correspondent who's been following the saga up. Steve king, Linda, I will not stand back as a leader of this party believing in this nation that all are created equal that that stands are continues to stand. It have any role with us. Iowa Representative Steve king is getting called on the carpet serious conversation with congressman Steve king on his future. Enroll in this Republican party house minority leader Kevin McCarthy, speaking on CBS, his face the nation after the Iowa congressmens recent comments in defense of white supremacy. Those comments appeared in a New York Times article last week in which Steve king. Question. Why label white nationalist had become offensive? He also skirted an apology during a speech on the house floor on Friday. It's true that like the founding fathers. I am an advocate for western civilization values. And that I profoundly believe that America is the greatest tangible expression of these ideals the world has ever seen under any fair political definition. I am simply an American nationalist, the one thing he said he did regret was this higher. Regret the heartburn that has poured forth upon this congress in this country. And especially in my state it in my congressional district that wasn't good enough for leader McCarthy..

"The deal you you're hitting the nail has to be that what happens in november does not depend on whether people think paul speech or january kevin mccarthy when it comes down to is particularly after that and minimally spending onto this spill are the republicans going to use the process of reconciliation and when she can patrick fifty one votes are ten ten being republican or not are they going to wave the white flag and say the best thing we can hold for the next eight months farmville not good but are we going to say do on welfare reform and we will see whether or not republican leaders oh are we going to be all hands on deck to get something out of the senate or we just say we cannot expect the senator toni up one forty nine two now here's the thing you can expect the senate that is that is actually a majority of fifty one forty nine to not do anything and there's two reasons number one even with even if you're assuming that nobody that everyone's going to sit on their hands and protect that inane and and absolutely inexplicable sixty vote rule you are giving away an opportunity for at least one extra shot at reconciliation and it sounds like the senate is going to take a pass on that so here's what we look like so how many bills have come through the house of representatives i had heard somewhere in north of four hundred so you you can go to work every day and you can pass concealed carry reciprocity across all fifty states you can you can change the rules governing obamacare you can piecemeal it apart and replace it with things that actually make you can do all of this stuff all of it you can actually address welfare dependency you can do all of the and it goes nowhere in.

"Really does speak their language but he's also a bit of a unifying character now because he's transcended sort of politics because of the horrific shooting that he endured he's he's sort of an inspirational figure is possible that he could leapfrog into that top spot i think anything's possible here talk about the kevin mccarthy stepping up and look i don't know what's going to happen this is only hours hours old by what you're getting at is absolutely right which is you need somebody you can deal with the freedom caucus and with a much larger number of republicans remembers two hundred thirty seven of them right now at least republicans who who are not in the in the freedom caucus so it take somebody with credibility from both sides but it's it is it's hard you know byron the reason that we a book you in moments like this is because you just hours after an event like this you have read the tea leaves you have all the sources and you can predict the future so i'm sorry for putting you on the spot with with asking who the new leader of the republican party will be in january although i will ask you this timing wise wind where do you think this you know people are obviously jockeying for position now we sort of know how the cards are gonna play before the midterm elections this is an an interesting thing and this is one of these things where it happens people take a while to think about it and they think well wait a minute we can't do that there has been talked that you know ryan would actually run for reelection and he was pretty much assured of reelection in his district and then after that then he would resign and i think that's seem more and more like an untenable thing to do to go through the whole campaign charade and all of that that wouldn't have been a good idea so now the idea is ryan will continue to stay as as a speaker throughout this term and kevin mccarthy says well there's no leadership race it all right now because the the speakers thing yeah i'm not sure that's going to be like totally tenable with him being a lame duck from right now he's not only gonna be speakers i'm.
