"Gun. Control in action has made this horror completely predictable in action by this. Congress makes us complicit. Now's the time for action to honor these victims with action. Real action not the fig-leaf sore the shadows that have been offered the other side along with hopes and thoughts and prayers. Thoughts and prayers are not enough and yet thoughts and prayers is all we have her from my colleagues on the other side. Thoughts and prayers must lead to action. There may be some question about what the motives were for the killer in boulder. But there's no mystery about what needs to be done. Connecticut has shown by some of the strongest gun laws in the country that they work but connecticut with those strong strong gun. Laws is at the mercy of states with the weakest laws because guns do not respect state boundary. So that was democratic senator richard blumenthal of connecticut. This is republican senator. john kennedy of louisiana. What has happened in the last few days. What's happened in the last years is of course tragic. And i'm not trying to perfectly equate these two but we have a lot of drunk drivers in americ- that kill a lot of people we ought to well to try to combat that too but i think what many folks out of the are saying is that the answer is not to get rid of all sober drivers. The answers to concentrate on the problem comparing this situation. Too drunk drivers your response state representative tom sullivan. And what you want to see right now and if you could respond to what might have surprised. A number of people President biden calling for an assault weapons ban. Yeah first off to to senator kennedy. I mean that's beyond a absurd If we would look at the advances that we have made an automobile safety since the first ones were built. I mean you know that we didn't have offers on cars. we didn't have seatbelts. We didn't have air bags. We done all of that act. We've made it safer to be in that and the the car industry is doing just fine. That's the same types of things we've asked for madan industry to do make it safer to do types of type things they'll still be profitable and we can save lives. I mean we. There was a big push against drunk driving now. You bartender gave you a beer if he thinks that you're intoxicated but boy if you look erratic and and you aren't thinking straight and you go into a gun shop as long as that credit card works. They're going to hand across the counter to you. Whatever it is you want okay. So there's no comparison between the two of those As far as you know what president biden said. Yeah we again. We need help on the on the national level The again having the ability. I mean you know. Assault rifles does is the mass into into shootings. I mean that's the one that allows them to kill more people quicker. I mean we. You know two two summers ago. There in ohio i mean the guy had had one hundred round drum hooked up to his firearm and in thirty two seconds he killed thirty five people And the police were right there. I mean they were there within in forty seconds and it wasn't time enough to be able to stop something like that. And what are you calling for in the colorado legislature where you were where your state representative we just yesterday afternoon. We passed out of committee in the house. A boston stolen to make sure that People who have their firearms lost or stolen report them. So the that law enforcement knows the areas that these are happening at They can they recover them of later on they can get them back to the people that kind of stuff sixty percent of people already do. It's but the opponents who were there talking about it. They right away started with the fearmongering that they're notorious for. And can we're comparing us to nazis saying that this is the beginning of a gun registration. Well sixty percent of them are already doing it of their own. Bluish and none of their firearms are getting confiscated. None of them are getting registered. Why all of a sudden when we asked that people start to do it because sixty not enough we need seventy. We need eighty percent of the people to notify law enforcement when they have their firearms lost stolen or romy b-be better yet. They need to be more responsible with their firearms. We're also are working on a safe storage making sure that you know you lock up on your firearms when they're at the presence of kids when there's kids in the house because we just have that those accidents happening way way too often. You know the statistics on hundred people die every day from gun violence. Twenty two of those veterans who are dying by suicide but it also over two hundred. People are injured by accidental shootings. A lot of those are children. I want to thank you so much for joining us. Democrat colorado state representative tom sullivan. "As you watched that unfold while unfortunately having lost a deputy in the line of duty here in weld county and Going through that first hand. I can tell you that My memory automatically goes back to the loss of deputy brownlee and and that same issue probably crops up for for any law enforcement agency. That's lost an officer. So you think about your own that you've lost and then you think about the pain that agencies going through and knowing that they can't take a break They can't just walk away and take a week off and and try to recoup and get your mind straight they still have a job to do That's probably one of the toughest things to to turn your ear employs around. Turn your deputies around your officers around and say okay. We lost one but We still have a job to do and expect for that level of professionalism to still be there and and you know everybody's still function as if they're a well oiled machine that's That's an extraordinarily difficult thing to do and having having had to have gone through that in the past You know i. I obviously I feel for the for the folks over in boulder and especially at that police department These are extremely tough times for those guys right. Now do events like this Does it ever make you have the thought crossed your mind. Maybe it's time to lay down the badge you know. I think there's always points in our career where we say is it worth it But no one gets into this job or no decent cop gets into this job without you know the the intestinal fortitude to say this is only gonna make me come back harder stronger and better You know there's times every career but i think These are the kind of things while it may scare some off. I think it It brings most of us closer together and and we just we become more determined to make sure that we continue to protect. The citizens of our community can't share. Steve reams joining us. Sheriff is there. Is there anything else that you want to get out there any thoughts or anything that you'd like to talk about that that maybe we didn't get to yet while we're all sitting here and we're we're contemplating what happened in boulder and we're trying to think of what we can do for for those those folks that were involved or that victimized by this incident it's important to remember that these families are going to struggle for a while and so what you can do today. You know in offering prayer assistance financial assistance. That's good but what you can do in a week from now. Two weeks from now is just as important because these people are gonna be struggling for quite some time and It's going to be hard to get back on their feet. And when i say these people i mean all ten victims their families And then the the men and women that were the first responders to that incident They're going to struggle for years to come so it's important to keep those people in your thoughts far more than what you know what the story may be on the news and the future. Sheriff thank you so much for your time this morning. Appreciate you coming on on such short notice and and again we'll have you on a under different different circumstances. So thanks for having me on and Just please keep the keep the families in your prayers absolutely well can share. Rooms appreciate your time this morning. And and again Getting getting information from every source. That i could find Coming across you know footage that you don't want to watch and and reading about things that you never wanna read It's a tough day here in colorado. And i do you know i. I hope that that we come out of this stronger Because you you offer the thoughts and the prayers and and that's what we can do right now right you know if you have the financial ability to help some of these victims of but but we can learn and we can raise our children to be better and that's where the process starts and that's where we have to be able to jump off of course talking about the Shooting at king super z the boulder king.
