"<Speech_Male> But, you know, so <Speech_Male> far is <Speech_Male> passing above. <Speech_Male> That wasn't his <Speech_Male> forte matter of fact. <Speech_Male> We didn't want him <Speech_Male> to pass <Speech_Male> because he was not <Speech_Male> a good passer. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Steve, <Speech_Male> have you ever covered someone like <Speech_Male> Kevin Garnett before? <Speech_Male> Where does he rank <Speech_Male> amongst some <Speech_Male> of the greatest selfish players that <Silence> you that you've had to cover <Speech_Male> that you've got? <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Well, if I <Speech_Male> comfortably beat score 30. <Speech_Male> <Silence> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Silence> Well, <Speech_Male> look, <Speech_Male> he gets <Speech_Male> points for being <Speech_Male> in terms of media <Speech_Male> question. <Speech_Male> Okay, he gets points <Speech_Male> for being a great <Speech_Male> quote. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> But <SpeakerChange> he gets some <Speech_Male> deductions <Speech_Male> at first, <Speech_Male> they used to have <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Paul and Kevin <Speech_Male> come out <Speech_Male> right away <Speech_Male> to talk to media. <Speech_Male> But then at the end, <Speech_Male> he was taken <Speech_Male> a while and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> there were <Speech_Male> many deadlines <Speech_Male> that died a <Speech_Male> painful death <Speech_Music_Male> waiting for <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> waiting for <Speech_Male> the KG to <Speech_Male> come out. <Speech_Male> Hey, <Speech_Male> one thing I want to get back to <Silence> I want to ask max a question. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> We were talking about <Speech_Male> celebrating <Speech_Male> the important things on <Silence> a play. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> And I'm wondering whether <Speech_Male> I <SpeakerChange> remember <Speech_Male> seeing this <Silence> when you were at UNC <Speech_Male> Charlotte. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> You'd score a <Speech_Male> bucket <Speech_Male> and as you're going up <Speech_Male> court, you turn or <Speech_Male> right away, you turn <Speech_Male> and you point to <Speech_Male> the guy that made the pass. <Speech_Male> Were you the <Speech_Male> first guy that <Speech_Male> people do that <Speech_Male> now? But were <Speech_Male> you the first guy that <Speech_Male> did that? Because <SpeakerChange> you're the <Speech_Male> first guy to remember doing <Speech_Male> it. No, <Speech_Male> that was <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> you give credit to one <Silence> person. That was Dean <Speech_Male> Smith. <Speech_Male> At Chapel Hill. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Always <Speech_Male> pointed <Speech_Male> to the guy who <Speech_Male> made the past. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> That became <Speech_Male> popular. Wow, <Speech_Male> that's weird. <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> I don't remember our coaching <Silence> assisted that we can <Speech_Male> copy <Speech_Male> what happened <Speech_Male> to Chapel Hill. <Speech_Male> So that's <Speech_Male> how that happened. And <Speech_Male> I just continued <Speech_Male> to do that <Speech_Male> throughout my <Speech_Male> career of <Speech_Male> acknowledging. If you <Speech_Male> see James worthy, <Speech_Male> James worthy did that <Speech_Male> all the time because <Speech_Male> that was instilled <Speech_Male> in him. Michael Jordan <Speech_Male> the same. <Speech_Male> Yeah, Jordan did the <Speech_Male> same thing, yeah. <Speech_Male> You're <Speech_Male> talking about your <Speech_Male> couches on the green Smith. <Speech_Male> You coach <Speech_Male> a Charlotte, so we <Speech_Male> talk about the great Lee <Speech_Male> rose. Okay, <Speech_Male> max, say it with me. <Speech_Male> If you <Speech_Male> can help me. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> If you <Speech_Male> can help me, you <Speech_Male> can't help me. <Speech_Male> I can't <Speech_Male> help me. <Speech_Male> I can't help <Speech_Male> you. He's <Speech_Male> quality right now. <Speech_Male> My college <Speech_Male> coach, the <Speech_Male> first day he <Speech_Male> came in at UNC <Speech_Male> Charlotte. <Speech_Male> From <Speech_Male> Transylvania, Lee <Speech_Male> rose. <Speech_Male> And he <SpeakerChange> sat down <Speech_Male> in front of all the guys <Speech_Male> and said, this was <Silence> in a duck <SpeakerChange> tree. <Speech_Male> He said, <Speech_Male> guys, <Speech_Male> I'm gonna need some scholarships. <Speech_Male> Because <Speech_Male> some of you <SpeakerChange> can't play. <Speech_Music_Male> This is the first day. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> And then he said, <Speech_Music_Male> let me just say <Speech_Music_Male> something. <Speech_Male> If you <Speech_Male> can help me, <Speech_Male> I can help you. <Speech_Male> If you can't help <Speech_Male> me, <Speech_Male> I can't help you. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Immediate wake <Speech_Male> up call. <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> You know, <Speech_Male> we're gonna have to close <Speech_Male> here. No, I know Matt <Speech_Male> I know <Speech_Male> you gotta get out of here, max. Max <Speech_Telephony_Male> on the road. <Speech_Telephony_Male> I wanted to wrap up right <Speech_Male> there, but I can hear <Speech_Male> these stories for hours, man. <Speech_Male> So that's probably <Speech_Male> on me, but I love <Speech_Male> this thing go, but hey, Steve, <Speech_Male> we appreciate you checking <Speech_Male> in. "It was the guy that made the seal that allowed max to score. And so when the guys on the bench, instead of like, hey, if they're talking about chief on that plane, that's team basketball. That's the stuff that wins, right? Right. Absolutely. Well, one of the players who truly embodied that spirit, especially on the defensive end, as the anchor, the anchor of the Celtics culture, when he came here, was Kevin Garnett, Kevin Garnett, of course, is his weekend here in Boston. It will be plenty of selfish legends in this city to take in Sundays. Seeing his number go to the raptors, please lord, please lord, let Ray Allen show up. Please. I think that prayers fall in love. We've given you an opportunity rate to come in, even if they want to boo you, you give over with. And now you become back into the poll of this family and you're right. This is a big weekend and Kim learned that deserves everything he's getting. But as I've said a thousand times, he said, Kevin Garnett called pierce, they don't get that with, you know, and I'm not going forward here without reality. They didn't matter if the big they came in as a big three. We can't we can't give KG's flowers, I don't want to do without bringing up. I'll give them all the look. I've been wanting the players to sit. I've been wanting the people who said this before. I said, in my opinion, I can't run that. It's the best all around player that's ever played with the suffix. And that means both obviously and defensively. You know? Because you said that. I like that. Well, screaming, oh, you're kicking that bird, do you kicking erupt? No, I'm not. What I'm saying right now is that Kevin Garnett wasn't as good offensively as Larry Bird, but he was much better defensively. He wasn't as good as Bill Russell, a defense group, but he was much better offensively. So in that standpoint, I'm just saying he was the best all around Celtic, maybe they ever put on the uniform..

"Young man's game. Well, that's a thing, too, you know, bringing it back to the Celtics. And why they're doing well. Look, they committed defensively. And they're moving the ball. They're cutting, right? Look, I think the ultimate Celtic trivia question is this. No Celtic has ever led the league in scoring. 6 players who played for the self could lead the league in scoring for other teams, but no Celtics ever led the league in scoring. Wow. And the reason for that is the Celtics, if you say, what are they known for? The basketball, okay? So even the Red Army with the fast break and all that, that's very important. And so as much as Jason tan these numbers are lighting up, there's a little bit of danger there too. It's great. He's doing it and he's doing it in the flow. You've got to make sure that stays that way, I think. Look, if I'm running the Celtics, I would want the ball and Jayson Tatum's hands as much as possible. But just not the stuff we saw earlier, you know, 25 dribbles up top. Triple dribble. It's not good for him. I want the ball as he give it up, pass cut, be setting picks for Jayson Tatum so that when he gets the ball, he can be a finisher. That's what he can kill teams. What he's become now, again, what I think makes him valuable, isn't the huge point totals. It's the he goes to the bucket and when it becomes one on one becomes one on two and one on three really fast. Jason Tatum, he's making the pass out to the wide open guy. You know, he's pulling up. He's throwing the lob to rob Williams. These are things that are making him great. Not just the fact that he could score before, you know? But becoming a more complete player, right? You know, I did a story on him earlier or just before last Saturday, I think it went out on heavy. Talking to people, GMs and coaches around the league. You know, in the same, this is a different Jayson Tatum. And this is a far more dangerous Jason Tatum. Yeah. Is he not sucking on that top 5 door Steve? What do you think about that conversation? That's all context. Because that gets in a numbers and stuff. And I think that's much a joke. You know, the old line that the worst team in the league has a leading score in a leading rebounder. So guys put up numbers. People would have said, oh, Russell Westbrook. Averaging a triple double, but he was playing for Russell Westbrook out in Oklahoma City. So. The wizards. But wizards, it was a little better because he was, he was actually better with Beale. But you know, and this is not just me saying, you know, that's what it looks like to me. That's talking to people out in Oklahoma City that were in the same room with him and having to deal with that. And it's, you know, look, I'll go back to this point here that I've made a billion.

"It's really interesting Howard, like, you know, I thought the poll about this and he shared how his conversation conversations won't ray. And then during our Cedric Maxwell interview, he kind of was like at the end. He's like asking about ray and he wants them to get back together and all this stuff. And you hear Doc talk about what happened and knowing how Kevin feels. And I can say this comfortably confidently and accurately, it wasn't the what it was the how and Kevin has this code. And it's definitely old school, but it's definitely something that I think we all believe in in terms of how we live our lives and our relationships. And when it came to the film, he was like, he's like, I don't want to go there. So he would answer it while we were talking about the super teams and Miami and things like that, but he didn't want to drill down. He didn't want to harp on it. And it goes back to the mission of the film to educate entertain and keep it positive. And yes, Ray Allen, big part of the second half of his career. Obviously, a huge part of that championship team. But as far as the fracture and what happened after the 2012 battle with Miami, you know, we'll see how we structure that with what we build out in the future. But we've got a lot of stuff there to use for sure. Fair enough. Before we go, let me end kind of where this began. You mentioned when you first started filming and it was just or some of those beach scenes and everything else, days before and miles away from the tragic helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter and the others. I don't think I knew much during the time I covered Kobe for 7 years, Eric knows, I don't think I knew much in real time about Kobe and KG's connection other than the obvious. Kevin Garnett breaks the barrier in 95 the first in 20 years to go straight from high school to the pros that opens the door to Kobe and T Mac and Jermaine O'Neal and a lot of others. And there was always that connection just thematically. They had something in common. I don't think we knew much in real time about what their friendship or bond off the court was. What did you guys pick up on the way there, especially because you're doing this? Obviously in the wake of Kobe's death and again, it's touched on in passing, but before we go, I'm just curious if there's anything else you picked up about what the depth of their relationship was. If I could go first, I think. At the core, there was such respect, but when they were living in it during their careers, I think both of them are the ultimate competitors and alphas and almost like two prize fighters or the way they competed and tried to beat each other. I think there was no room for a friendship at that point. And then it seemed as they got older. It was heading towards the direction where there was obvious appreciation and love and I think it was headed in a direction where Kevin was excited to kind of build that relationship further with Kobe. That was my observation. What were your thoughts? Yeah, I mean, you see them through the archival in the late 90s and you know, that moment at MSG where KG throws up the lob and Kobe just comes swooping in for the two hand dunk and slo-mo. It's one of the most beautiful highlights we've ever seen. And back then they were just kids and they got along. But then came the playoff battles with soda in LA and Kobe had three rings and KG couldn't get out of the first round. And he's using that to just, you know, there's never been anybody better that we've seen and it's inspired my life so much Howard since 2008. Taking whatever he can as fuel and putting it in the fire. So Kobe and shaker winning FD's guys. I've got to go harder at them. I can't be Friends with nobody out here. And then when it came to Lakers Celtics, and obviously, you know, it's public knowledge that, you know, KGs, who he was choosing, he talked about in all the smoke. He talked about the Lakers something that the Celtics, the sons, the warriors. And he, you know, he tried to call Kobe and that summer. And ironically, Kobe ran into power Gasol that summer because of the solar shade that story where that's where he and Kobe ran into each other and then the pal trade happens the following February. So they all kind of landed where they were supposed to, and then went to those battles, but there was so much love so much respect and, you know, Kevin had been spending a lot of off season time in LA for many years, and he was hoping to really increase their FaceTime together and build on that connection and it's an amazing connection to think about, but it's also very sad to think about what it could be now and moving forward. Yeah. Yeah. And that is something that kind of I picked up on that just in that one scene and again, people watch it. It is. It's really moving. A lot of this is. And I just want to say because we hit on some of the more tougher moments, I was smiling for most of this movie. I was watching this for two hours. I was just smiling because it was just so much fun, you know? There are some tough moments, but Kevin Garnett's career is a blast. And Kevin Garnett talking about his career in a way that I think we rarely have seen was a blast. So this was a lot of fun. This interview was a lot of fun. "Even a decision. Yeah, and the other thing here and the cruel irony, right? If the George Floyd tragedy happens in another city in the United States, another town in the United States has not Minneapolis. We're not having that moment with him when he's at the memorial. You know, we were going to Minneapolis regardless to try to do some things there. And that day, which is really tough to put into words and Howard there's that moment there where KG connects with someone on camera from his past, I don't want to spoil it, but it's like we were supposed to be there with him. And we were in like Gary Trent is there with us. And all these people that he's tied to from his past and he spent 12 years there. And he was never one. He was doing all the community stuff behind the scenes and in Minneapolis. He wasn't documenting it, he didn't care to have it out there in the press. He was just all about doing the right thing. And that community meant a lot to him. And he wanted to pay his respects and we were able to get down to the memorial in a very subtle light footprint way. But from the moment we got there, it was one of the most powerful things I've ever witnessed. And I'm very glad we were able to document him experiencing that. But the key was the right balance in the film, because without that conversation with snoop and without that moment, there is no way we can bridge to seeing what went on in Minneapolis. You know, and there was a lot of conversation we had and edit and do we have it here? There are other places, and it's very delicate. And I think we I think we hit onto the right way. I think we paid it the proper respect and attention. And, you know, Howard just, you know, tying in, you know, the pandemic. It's like originally, we, you know, we had a few lines about the pandemic or what we're living through. I'm like, we know what we're living through. You sense it through the filmmaking. We don't have to hammer at home. There doesn't need to be a 45 second or 92nd COVID sequence. You see, you see our filmmakers and our you see us in bandanas. You see KG with a mask on a different times. You see it you sense it and we all lived through it and continue to live through it so there was no point in trying to hammer that home anymore. So, you know, Howard you tell us. I think we hit the right balance there. And I think it works and snoop from both the seriousness, the fun and that love that they've had for so long, that really shine through when we were very fortunate to get that scene and eventually wall play ball there together, eventually. No, that was snoop was involved in some of the most poignant moments in this film in my amateur opinion. Just as a viewer, the discussion he and KG have about Black Lives Matter. And then on the lighter side, tinged with some heavy Ness as well. When they're talking about Kobe, like there's some really fun Kobe stuff there, even as there's some sorrow mixed in. Snoop was phenomenal in this. And yeah, the moment you guys got of KG at the George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis was again just very poignant moving. And it gave it's an unfortunate entry point into seeing a different aspects of Kevin Garnett, the person, but it did give you as filmmakers and now us as the audience, that chance to see this part of KG that I don't think we really could have understood or been exposed to during the course of his career. You know, there's so much that happened in the course of his career. So I do want to ask a couple of things here that like hit me along the way that like, oh man, I really, I'm curious, could they have gone farther in this direction or that direction or maybe maybe there's some people who just didn't want to participate in this. But you know, there's obviously a chapter in there about garnet and marbury and it didn't work out and we hear some of the reasons there. But we don't see Stefan marbury. At kage's own families is not in this. Are there just some lines that you had to respect that maybe he drew at the outset? Because look, the payoff, again, I'm speaking to my audience here. The payoff is this. Whatever the parameters might be. Getting Kevin Garnett to the extent that you guys got him with all of the passion and insights and openness behind it. I would say is absolutely worth it, but I also do wonder as a journalist at heart, okay, but there are maybe some lines that could be crossed here. So if there's somebody who's not in the film, is it because there's just not enough room in two hours or maybe some of them didn't want to do it. Maybe KG didn't want them in. Give me some sense of like save marbury where that fell. Combination of a obviously trying to make a film during a pandemic. Marbury, in particular, you know, he did his own dock the prior year. KG was not in that supposedly they reached out. And, you know, he was okay talking about that stuff. Obviously, but, you know, there's a chorus of voices that take us through that section of the film, but he did not want to go down that road of trying to break step into the film. It just wasn't something he wanted to do. They've gone their separate ways. Obviously, we had that awkward 2000 2009 when marbury found his way onto the Celtics for a cup of coffee or two and they obviously were able to have that work without an issue, but it was never the same again. And it was just something that he didn't want to do. And as far as the family stuff goes, you know, you know, his family is located in a couple of different places and relationships have changed and shifted over the years and it's something that we had talked about. Many times, both before we started rolling camera during the process, once the pandemic started and, you know, we, you know, we were kind of teetering back and forth and ultimately it was something that we just decided. Look at this story we have, we don't think we need to force this and there was obviously hesitation on his side and this is kind of the way it panned out. Well, and just to that point real quick, Brian, I'll let you go, but I actually thought even without that even without certain necessarily maybe family voices because you have his youth coaches and some other key figures from his childhood, the story about kind of his basketball origin story, which I don't think I'd ever heard before is really interesting and it involves anecdote about his mom and everything, which again, I'll leave that for the film. People go check it out, but it's really it's fun, it's interesting. It's a new insight. And so it is all there. So I want to note that as well. Brian, do you want to jump in? Well, let me. Just before you going to say this, just let me add one thing. Just regards to family and some of those voices in the film, like it's very clear like these bonds that he's had for so long, like coach wolf from farragut. Ronnie feels like they still feel like family to him. Isaiah Thomas family. That type of connection. And at that type of love, and we felt so fortunate that they felt the same way about him, which is why those interviews we felt were so strong. Bounce past the.

"And not rely as much on still do the single subject interviews, but not living them as much, but we were so fortunate that we got so many strong ones that that worked itself out. But, you know, we started those beautiful beach scenics and his first hero interview and the fireplace scene, all of that stuff is shot January 24, 25, 2020. And then we wake up the next day, Dan Levin and I go for a quick breakfast. We're still in Beverly Hills. We have a four o'clock flight back to New York. And then all of our phones start going crazy. And we're in disbelief about what we're seeing and what's going on. And we were literally filming with KG 24 hours before with our toes touching the Pacific Ocean ten miles away from where the tragedy happened. And obviously that affected the world in a certain way, but Kevin specifically obviously really emotional about it and understandably so, and he needed to just unplug and think and bride just build on this next thing. We're fortunate enough that we're still able to go to Chicago and execute what we were going to Chicago for for showtime basketball, for Kevin, not all of the smoke, but most importantly for the shoot back at farragut. Because if we don't get that shoot in that way back at farragut in February of 2020 before the pandemic, we're not sitting here talking about the same film. That's also a weekend, right? Or the week of the All-Star Game in Chicago, which is really like the last big NBA thing that happened before the pandemic. There was a lot of trips, a lot of us took. It was president's day Monday. It was after the All-Star Game. School was closed, and we got in there with Kevin and coach. That Monday right after all star. According to note, too, I mean, Kevin hadn't been back to the school and in 20 plus years. So it was the first time back. He was a bit I think emotional and kind of, I don't know, a little intimidated by doing it. It was all star weekend. We had all the smoke going on. We had a lot of things going on. And I remember us huddling and saying, okay, do we try and force this? Do we get it in while we're here? Chicago easy play. We can always come back and get this and it was literally 50 50 and Dan Eric made the call to say, I mean, let's just get it, let's be safe we're here. Let's rally. So we did it. We got Kevin on board and thank God we did, because as Eric said, the film would be entirely different if we didn't get that day at the school with him. That essentially, I think, is one of the key anchors to the film and enabled us to keep a majority of the structure that we had outlined pre-pandemic, you know, that helped us, I think, carry it through the pandemic as we had that great weekend in Chicago. Yeah, and just Howard just for you to now obviously included in the show, but, you know, we then take we take a three month pause. I mean, we're literally three months we're down and we have to figure out how we're going to move forward, not so much with all right, who are we shooting next? And those logistics, but more of like, what's our approach going to be? You know, are we taking this four to 6 weeks at a time? Are we taking this two months at a time? How much can we travel? How much should we lean on remotes? And we just kept having this evolving formula, which eventually led me to going out back out to LA in June of 2020. And Brian and I worked out a plan. Dan came out with me for the first week. He had a newborn on the way, so he came out for the first week and we started doing interviews again. So we did part two of KG, but this is where we got pierce. We got rondo. We got Doc. We got cassell. We got Barnes. We got meadow. We got jelani. Might be missing one, but we got all of those before the bubble started again. So again, it's like, if we don't get these guys now, we're not getting these guys because, you know, Doc cassel rondo, they had to go back to the bubble. So the timing of that and getting those was huge. And what that allowed us to do was start the edit process. So we could start cutting and molding and I can't speak highly enough about James Lester, our editor. He's an absolute rockstar and the rest of the post team. We were able to then figure out, okay, we're gonna edit as we go. This is what we need from the next people. And the next people and how would you did your interview when we were in New York in the fall of 2020? And we just kept it moving and as Brian says literally every week across the board on showtime basketball stuff that we're building. It's just the first down at a time. It's the first down at a time, and that's all we did and we're able to chip away at it. And thank goodness it worked out. Yeah, and I should just use this opportunity to apologize to viewers for the overabundance of my face in this film. I blame my two guests today and their film editor, but no, it was an honor to be part of this, honestly. Thank you guys for allowing me to talk for a while on camera. About critical glue Howard. Critical glue will be my new Twitter avatar bio. No, I see the guys that you interviewed for the names and faces in this film. It's incredible. I have many moments of just going full weight and Garth that I'm not worthy. But it's incredible. It's a phenomenal lineup of people, including snoop. Snoop Dogg, who's home? You apparently were in. There's also a really compelling discussion between Kevin Garnett and snoop about Black Lives Matter about George Floyd. And it's interesting, I wondered about this decision you guys made us filmmakers that this is a film that if it had been done at any other time in history, KG's last year immediately following his retirement, whatever, parts of this are very different because there's no pandemic and there's no Black Lives Matter movement at this level, right? You're finishing this or moving through this while our whole world is being disrupted last year. In a lot of really just intense ways. And so this becomes part of it. But the film itself, you know, a retrospective on Kevin Garnett's career is gonna stand the test of time and that career is nothing to do with that moment, but that moment happened. George Floyd happened, Black Lives Matter happened. The pandemic happened. How did you decide to say, look, we have to at least weave this in as part of the narrative, even though this is kind of post Kevin Garnett career. I can say, I mean, it became something I talked to you real quick, but at one point it was a conversation and possibly a decision. And then after a while, it kind of wasn't even a decision. It was just it inserted itself as a character in essence. And we had to include it as we told the story through those times. But I'll throw it to you, but, you know, my point was, I think it I remember having some conversations, do we? Do we not? And then ultimately, it really wasn't.

"Especially with the world that we're in now. It's easy to forget. Go ahead, Brian. I was just going to add to that, you know, it made me think of something in terms of every conversation we have with him as a creator and a consumer of content and a critic of content. Every conversation starts with, hey, have you guys checked out this Wu Tang series or did you see that Doc on Rick James? Or you've got to bring back ray Donovan, what do you guys doing? Everything with him. He consumes so much. So as a creative, it's cool. And he brought a lot of ideas and energy from things he was watching to this. So Eric just stimulated that thought that, you know, from a creative and consumption standpoint, he's, you know, there's no one watching more than Kevin. Yeah, and let me also just add quickly while we're just talking about some of these filmmaking elements like Mark Levin, Dan Levy, my co director, remarks, EP, it stands father. There are father son, filmmaking combo marks, companies blowback productions, who originally met Kevin and content cartel several years ago. Howard you know the levins from a little bit from the legend of sweepy that I worked on with them years ago. It couldn't have been a better partnership because of how Dan and I compliment each other, but KGs trusted Mark, marks trust in us and just this whole synergy around this story how to tell this story and how to work with Kevin, you couldn't have game plan that any better. Brian, you said something that made me think for a second about this idea of the tear in the matrix, which I love as an analogy a reference point also because I think that when I think about Kobe in that era, that's, I think, when the matrix movies first hit, so they're tearing the matrix was being this prepped to pro generation that revolutionized the league in so many ways before the door slammed shut on the prepped pros. But Garnett is a revolutionary figure in the NBA anyway because we talk about now, but Giannis and jokic and Durant, these guys who were unicorns or these evolutionary kind of players, but KG was that before any of these guys, virtually 7 feet, 6, 12, whatever however he wants to describe it. He never would cop to being 7 feet. I wonder if you guys were able to nail him down on that during filming. But he was a virtual 7 footer who could do everything. Plan the perimeter, put the ball on the floor, take you off the dribble, play in the post. Guard the rim, all of it. He was freaking incredible and people even people who were Celtics fans maybe or who started watching the NBA around the time of the Celtics championship. That's not the same garnet as the guy we saw entered the league in the mid 90s. Because he's a little older and didn't quite do all those things at the same level. So what a couple things. I want to talk about that, but Brian, when you mentioned tear in the matrix, and that KG sees one now, is it about this other shift in the way the game is played and how big's play in the game? What was it that he was Tapping into? Yeah, I think that's right. I think it's positionless basketball. As it's been termed now, I think he sees the game entirely shifting away from the league. He was in. And I think that was at the core of his thought. He also told a cool story about Michael Jordan and I believe it was Jordan telling him you'll know when you're done when you look around and you don't recognize anything anymore. And he said he had that moment, I believe it was in Brooklyn or perhaps when he was back in Minnesota for the final curtain call. But to answer your question, Howard, I think it's the way the game is played now. And again, to go back to it and he was he ushered that whole movement in, you know, the idea of bringing a big out and handling and shooting threes, you know, among many other things he changed. And I think that's, again, at the core of this film, is that his fingerprints are all over the modern MBA, both from encore and from a business and from salary cap everything. You know, this era, you're quick to think Kobe, you're quick to think AI, but really his prints are significantly all over it as much as either of those two guys. When you have somebody want to add on that or I just, it's crazy to go back and look at the totality of the skill set during the prime years with the Timberwolves, and I don't think I mean, obviously our age bracket remembers it and saw it, but people need to take advantage of YouTube and go watch the work this guy was doing. It was flat out scary. And then if you want to play the comp game with what he would do with in his prime in the modern era with that attitude and that hunger and the way he thinks about load management, it would be flat out scary. And just remarkable domino effects that came from him Kobe AI, not just, you know, yes, the power forward position, but the style of play as a whole. And you could really, you know, I don't want to jump too far ahead to some of the film structure things, but you know, when we put the two hour structure in place when we made the decision to go that route, we identified these four pillars that were going to be kind of tent poles for us and that was obviously the fact that he changed the game going from high school to the NBA for the first time in 20 years. He changed the business side of the game, obviously, which you know well, which was the contract and then obviously everything that happened with the lockout, he redefined the power forward position, which we're still feeling the effects of on the floor now. And then, you know, the move to Boston ushered in the super team era. Those four pillars for one person's impact are find anybody in any industry that's made that kind of impact along the way over that course of time. And.

"My guests today are the filmmakers behind a phenomenal new documentary on Kevin Garnett. It's called Kevin Garnett, anything is possible. It's available on showtime in the showtime app as of Friday, November 12th. That is the date that this podcast is dropping, so if you're listening to this, it should be available right now or within a few hours. Either way, go find it, it's incredible. Joining me to discuss the documentary are the co director Eric Newman and the executive producer Brian Daly and they got so many great stories to tell. I've seen the screener of the film. It's an incredible ride, two hours, but it flies by. Takes you from KG's youth and his basketball origin story all the way through to his retirement. Of course, the Timberwolves years, the championship in Boston. A lot of surprises along the way, some new insights into KG things that, you know, 24 years covering the league, things that I didn't know. And some great voices in this film too. They got Alan Iverson, Paul Pierce Doc Rivers, Snoop Dogg? Yes, snoop. And in fact, those are some of the best scenes are between snoop and KG. This episode of the pod was also just really fun for me on a personal level because Eric Newman, who is, as I say, the co director, he and I are good friends, we were coworkers at bleach report years ago, one of my favorite people to have worked with back in the day and I just couldn't be more proud as a friend to see the amazing work that Eric is doing now. So yeah, a little bit of personal interest in this one, but mostly it's just a great film about KG and this was a really fun interview with Eric and Brian. So listen to the podcast, then go watch the film or stop this right now, go watch the film first and then there's no spoilers or anything. You can do it any way you want to. Anyway, before we get to all that quick reminder, please rate review and subscribe to the crossover pod, wherever you get your podcasts, check us out on the YouTube feed as well under the Sports Illustrated podcast banner. Chris mannix, and Howard back. Now pleased to be joined by the filmmakers behind Kevin Garnett, anything is possible. Co director Eric Newman and executive producer Brian Daly, gentlemen, welcome, thanks for being here. Thank you, Howard. Great to join you. This was finally safe. I can finally say, what up Beck in proper context? You can. Great to be here with you, buddy. And I can say hello Newman for all of my podcast listeners to hear so that I can beat to death further a joke that I've been beating to death since you and I started working together 8 years ago. And you're still putting up with it, which is honorable. This was a phenomenal ride, as I mentioned in the intro to the episode today, two hours, but and I texted you this Eric as soon as I finished watching it. It went by so fast I would have watched another two, three hours. KG, we know even before there's a documentary done before a film is made about him that he's an incredibly compelling and energetic figure. And so it's a natural in some ways, but I feel like one of the great joys of watching this film is that we saw I feel like the full KG, there's so much there. He's so great as the narrator of his own life. Not that you guys didn't have to do a lot of lifting at times, but it almost felt like he's one of those guys you could flip the camera on and just say go because he's actually I feel like a natural storyteller. He's got so well, as we know. So let me just start with this. What was the collaboration with him like? He is an executive producer on this himself. How much is the two of you as filmmakers kind of sketching this out versus KG saying, listen, this is the way to tell my life story. Where's the meaning of the minds there? Well, it started, we can get to the back backstory a little later on, but, you know, in terms of coming together with KG and for some that only know him for his encore personality, he is so humble and we literally had a force him to the middle where he wanted to lay out something Howard that started with the impact and domino effect, of course, of his leap from high school to the NBA in 1995. And then just wanted to trace all of those things that led to. But he kept leaving out his story. So, you know, I thankfully, was put in a room with him in January of 2019 when Brian and I were both working on the DeMarcus cousins film the resurgence. And thanks to Mark Levin, our partner at blowback production, who had a relationship he was building with KG and his group. He got me in a room and we just started vibing on this energy about the time frame of 25 years. And yes, all the things that he impacted from that decision. But then also weaving in his story and obviously that's an incredible arch as it is. So that's what we're really starting to put the framework of this together. And then flush out all the different elements because as we all know, there's so much that goes into this story, both leading up to him. Declaring for the draft in 95 at barragan in Chicago. And then, of course, everything that happens thereafter going to the MBA. Brian, jump in, what was the collaboration like with garnet and how much else did you guys have to if he doesn't want to talk about himself? Did that present a particular challenge? It's a two hour movie about Kevin Garnett. How did you find a way to kind of get him to engage on that level so that's not just about, okay, the broad outlines. Yeah, that was one of the craziest parts to get to know him early and understand how humble and almost uncomfortable. He is talking about himself. So getting him comfortable with the idea that no Kevin, this is not a story about the last 25 years and you've done some things. This is about you and you need to be comfortable and accept that. And it's not going to work any other way. So, you know, he slowly I think in a testament to Eric and the team around him, he was just so comfortable for day one. And thinking back to that first pitch meeting, if you will, but it was so far from a pitch meeting, you know, typically pitch meeting, you think people coming in with DeX, selling really hard, you know, you got to think about it. Once you leave the room for a couple of days, maybe weeks, maybe months. You know, within minutes within a minute, we knew right away that Kevin is a storyteller on another level, his personality is his charisma, his energy. By 5 minutes in, he was sweating through his golf shirt as if he was on the court just to give you an idea of the intensity at which he was he was speaking to everybody. And Steven Espinosa was in that room, president of sports at showtime..

Ation of of just like basic respect principles in society in general degradation. I think that's probably the word. Yes i dislike this attitude out there of entitlement and there's an attitude of lawlessness as the guy said and i think it it does show itself at sometimes. It's some of these sports i mean. How many times have we seen and a video from an airport with this group of people just going after each other and it's like everybody can't wait for the next airport brawled unfold and you know what's going on on airplanes. What's going on you know everywhere. It's everywhere in society. There's something happening and here. We live in new york. We got eight and a half million people living on top of each other and we got all sorts of crap going on. I'll go back to what you said earlier about how it's not something new and stuff was thrown at you during your playing career. Is it just the also. A case of everything that happens is caught on video and watch ten million times. Yeah that's probably also you know the viral stuff to social media the everybody's got an angle of it and and look. I didn't realize that kyri had done what he did right. After the game was over and go to center court and step on the logo of the of the celtics kevin garnett caught it and kevin garnett. So we're not gonna talk about this now. We didn't see that you know. So kevin garnett basically was incensed by what kyrie did. And i'm sure kevin garnett was incensed when he saw the bottle was. I don't think that's exactly what you want have happened now but i work kevin garnett's words he also said you know we all have to be better. That's including kyrie irving. Yeah no of course. let's go to nick. And huntington what's going on the morning guys side. I'm not sure if you guys spoke about this yet this morning. But i'm just wanna see if you have spoken about who you think barring a miracle here The knicks are gonna keep at the end of this year renew contracts. Or who do you think that the knicks are gonna keep. Who do you think the gulf man. Well i often say a miracle. Of course we have to preface it by saying that you've got three more games potentially if they come back a win this series of changes the old perspective on things. But let's say they do go out and one of these next couple of games and they go out like the way that they did in games three and four. Then i mean just about anything is on the table. Isn't it. well. I if i look at the roster right now. Rj barrett's probably will be here. Julius randle be here. He doesn't need an extension next year. He has contracts eligible for amax extent and the way he's played in this series champ. Yeah they may feel forced to give it to them now. I no way. I'd like to have derrick rose back in a short term contract two years. Maybe he deserves it. He's been playing great. He seems like he's got a resurgence. Here he seems like he likes plan for a tip it oh and he really is a floor leader. I don't care what anybody says. he's completely different than when he was here. Last time neal aquinas gonna be gone nerlens. Noel should stay top and it's going to stay in a contract year. Yeah i gotta keep him. Because mitchell robinson will be back. Yeah those guys like taj gibson. But he's a guy. Got off the bench and mitchell robertson's healthy and you have no one's oil and taj gibson. That's not a bad rotation to me. That's not a bad rotation. We gotta see an uptick in two players manual quickly and obi top and they both got to get better now. They can't be helter skelter out there and when they when quickly on. He's fun to watch. he's great. he's fearless. He'll take the ball down the lane and all that other stuff. But he's gotta learn. Obi top gotta learn. They've gotten a little bit better as as the year's gone on. But you know i just. They don't have a star guys. They don't have a guy other than derrick rose right now that can go get his own shot. Yeah they don't know that that's exactly right. I mean this whole series. There's been one guy you have faith in with the ball on his hands scored and gross but he does have the history. You know you've got the experience. The question is when you get the his age okay. So derrick rose is thirty one years of age you. Can you get two solid years out of him. They're going to go back towards normal going back to a normal schedule next year. Yeah you just can't have him be the primary point on us. Know they have to go out. And the question is is well emmanuel. Quickly get to be that guy. You gotta give them a chance. You gotta get you gotta. We gotta grow with them. That's when trae young i got to atlanta. They saw how brilliant he could be but it took awhile for him to get to where worry is now and he's only going to get better and remember they brought in. They signed that lucasville dosa just a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't gonna play for in the playoffs this year for the next on. How good he is but he's someone listen. A lot of people talked about how smart of a move. That was to grab him when they did sure he'll be he's gonna get an opportunity. We'll just leave it at that. I mean you know. Taj gibson is making the minimum i mean. That's that's amazing for what he's given this team. Sure i know but again you got to remember like when he was playing at the end of game too. He had all the veterans out there. You know these veterans are good solid players but there is no superstar on that cord. Maybe derrick rose was when he was twenty three years old but he's he's a great player and get me wrong but he's can't be great. You're not building the team around him. Moving forward i mean. He's carrying the team. That's why they're losing by twenty alex and mt olive. What's going on alex. Hey good morning. what's up man. Hey listen so. I actually somewhat know the kid who did throw the water bottle. He's my girlfriend's brother's college. Roommate right to the problem is is that. He's a twenty one year old individual. He goes to college right. He had a few too many drinks. He threw a water bottle. He didn't throw a beer bottle. He didn't throw shoe. He didn't throw any of that he wasn't screamer yellen or hooting and hollering. He watched kyri stop on the sign and he's got upsetting through a water bottle but now the nba is going to make this kid. A poster child and essentially his face is going to be plastered. Everywhere you got stephen a. Go by law the cops for this candy. Blame it on his parents. The kid actually lost his father father two months ago. You don't know the kid. No one knows what he's going through. No one knows anything about it so please. It's a water bottle and for kyrie. Listen big baby. Glenn davis last night. Said you're gonna stop on her son. You'd expect to get something back buddy chess games on time. I flipped the bird. You don't see me on. Espn so this this whole like tying those two things together making one okay. Because someone did something else is just that has to stop that mentality. the kyri stop it on. The logo is something. That's disrespectful to the celtics and everybody else's played their everything else and then this kid throwing the water bottle is also not okay. One doesn't make the other okay and it's floors ruining the guy's life he's in his life isn't going to be ruining did something stupid in this climate. Now where the nba. Gotta get this thing under control. They got him on video. And if you do.

When you think about Perkins, even as a prospect back then, having him down the middle with so important after you lose Jefferson and then you get a facilitator, bring it all together and Rhonda and those two guys were very young back then, but I'm I'm fitting in with those veterans, the way that they did ended up becoming all the more important once they got into the playoffs and everything else, what they were able to do with no. Playoff experience was very impressive. Especially I mean like you know Alan hadn't had a Deep Run either, Garnett it only been out of the first round. Once the fact that they were able to put it together the way they did first year with some tough opponents in front of them and land, they given them Detroit. It was a tough path to that finals and even the Lakers Lakers were favorites and that Championship coming into it. So it was, it was hard for that group from day one. I love what you say about, not giving up Rondo, not giving up Perkins or some of the other pieces that they had at that time as they possibly could. And it looks like they ultimately did get a steal, there was what they gave up and gave us back. Jefferson, got hurt that probably could have gone a little bit better for Minnesota if he was healthy. But it makes me think and now because there's this talk of brown for Beal, this is talk of what you can get for groundbreaking up that core a trade. Like this is why I say you figure out a different way to do it. Seven, first, I know people laugh when I say that but Rob I know they don't have great pieces right now. But ultimately, if you can even get a nice Prospect in this year's draft and continues to build Nesmith and put you in some of these other guys up, maybe that gets you to a package one day where you can ultimately add a third piece to Tatum and brown especially as kembo eventually walks out of here. In the next two years, I'm going to be tempting to try to do that now. And try to speed it up but I think you just kind of have to be patient and wait for this to manifest in a position where you can make that Garnett style move. Now the Garnett style move is Anthony Davis off cuz you okay with Davis brings to the game to the table and what he did in L A Year One. That's Kevin Garnett. There's not going to be another Kevin Garnett anytime soon or even Anthony Davis. Anytime soon that makes the Kyrie era and even bigger second. Guess because ultimately, you wanted Dead Davis here in Boston but.

"I guess only Shrugged, but it was. And I remember going into that six-year Series going. They're not mentally tough. Remember me saying that over and over and over Bobby. They're not Tough Enough. Not in the brain, the Celtics are the Sixers are not and the Celtics home. So, the point is something happened between the but that, that Miami fight that Washburn covered, right? Then in the bubble, the one was smart, screaming and yelling. Oh, opening night, cuz I don't think they've been the same since that game. Hm, right. I'm you know, I'm going to get out of your guys, but I do this. This is my last appearance of the Season. Thanks to everybody. There's a lot of fun and I as a spectator have never been more entertained by a post game show more than a game. There were a multitude of games. I didn't watch guys, but I tuned in to the post game show, so Kick-Ass and the listeners to in the viewers and the Chatters. Thank you. I'll see you in La Crosse. Go talk to Nick, unlock or room and yeah, I'll pinch or something. I'll make it entertaining Thanksgiving and some people in over there. You know, today's kg poem. Sure, I'd I want to keep that conversation going. Obviously, we'll hit more on who they're going to play on Tuesday and that kind of stuff tomorrow. Kg I was listening to the radio shack in a grand. Yeah, I was listening the Max and what I found. So I, I wasn't obviously covering the team back then. I was, let's see. Ten years old when kg arrived in Boston. I didn't, I wasn't a credentialed involving. I did not. I was no Shams starting at at 12 or whatever he did. I found the craziest thing about that time, they've obviously done a documentary and this and that about that error people didn't weren't necessarily sure if they wanted Garnett, you had Tommy heinsohn. Now it's saying that if Al Jefferson was traded he was going to quit. You had Max Steel in a similar way and quite a few people in the city. It seems like weren't sure if they want to trade, Al Jefferson for Garnet, which seems crazy to me now, I remember Jefferson, especially once he got the Charlotte and it had probably the best season of his career in Charlotte. Probably the last best post play season that we've seen in the NBA off before it officially died. So, Jefferson was a great player and he ended up having a great career. But when you think about what kg brought the boss, then the fact that that was even a conversations crazy to think about. Now I I just whenever I heard anyone say that, you know,.

"Sway tonight? Am enjoying this Saturday 70°. I, I went and got some stuff done early this afternoon. So I went on a long walk. I exercised Bobby today. Wow, I went and I watch them play basketball in the park over here. Watch them. We got here about we got here about next form of basketball game and unlock her room. But also, if you want to pick who you want to see, wizards Hornets. Took ahead on this next topic, we're about to get a kg wrap. This up, Kevin Garnett going into the Hall of Fame today said in his press conference. He wishes he came the boss. Sooner. And he said, stuff like this before, but I always wondered is Garnett going to make his Timberwolves experience, more Central to his Hall of Fame entry, or is it going to? He's going to go in as a Celtic, and it's pretty clear, especially with, especially, with some of the ownership believes that he's had with Minnesota in recent years. He's going to be the same though, he's going to be remembered as a split like he loves what if I wanted to Thursday, but again I still think slap to the face almost a little bit to have a rod owning that team. Now over Kevin Garnett which magic say to him. Magic had a I just saw the headline. I'm not going to one of those guys who's like given the news based on headlines, but I guess magic Edward for a rod. I didn't want to look it up. It's just Democrats might I didn't know the point that Bob making do it 4 kg. It's just like seriously you have to try to own this damn team forever and a day and now you want to sell it. Why is that? That they they're just don't and then they want, they haven't retired his number yet. I mean, like why is there since beef there? I don't, I don't get it because, I mean he's the most iconic player. Your organization has ever had. He is Far and Away the best thing that could have ever happened to your organization and you would think that they would treat him with a little bit more respect and a little bit more admiration.

"Welcome in South next. Timberwolves game 71. We're almost a Tuesday there for looking cast here with Nick. Gelso smoke bone, in his face off against the rage, your seeming, even on a win-win. Do you believe the Celtics blew out the Timberwolves? Today, I was watching on the go, I came back and watched the second half years. In the house and I just couldn't believe it's the lead. Got bigger and bigger as many as twenty one. In this one, the Timberwolves never made that rally know the young guys and Tatum and Fournier just took place in Minnesota. I know there has been down on Minnesota. All year. He hates that team. So probably wasn't a surprise in the him but he like, here's the thing. I don't hate the team. I just hate the way that they called them. Really, that doesn't mean I hate him and that doesn't mean I'm wrong. I mean when you when you play as pathetic as they do, I think you've earned the moniker of being referred to as a g League team that digs I hate him. I love Anthony Edwards, cat. I think it's just kind of coasting, I mean, I think you can get you 20 and 10 without batting an eyelash and D'Angelo is just a shot chucker. I'm sorry I can do without yeah, but Karl Anthony towns. He's, I mean, he's got some spice to him or something. I just want to know. I wanted to go somewhere. I want cat to go somewhere and start over because I think he's a good dog. Claire I just don't think he's motivated so and engage to be an amazingly awesome player, which I think is Talent. Frankly is aligned with and Anthony Edwards. I love him. Well oh yeah, he's he's off. He's been I just wrote about him and police report this week and again just talking with different Scouts about him and just how he has. Frankly, he's off their franchise. Hope that if they move on from cat, they've got a very clear and undeniable face of the franchise type player that they can lean on and they can frankly be that guy and if you watch them play off like Miss Smith is a great Energy..

The Tao of Bill Walton
"All right. So chris from your conversation with him and from watching him as a broadcaster over the years. How would you say bill. Walton has evolved from my selfish perspective. He's evolved to be more interesting. I remember watching those. Mba on nbc games with bill walton and marv albert as a kid. Bill was nothing compared to what he is now. Penetration jumpers in transition whereas the defensive resistant for minnesota walton. Was the guy in a suit and tie on nbc for several years. Kevin garnett is thirty six in the nba. Free throw attempts. That's not good enough now. He's the when there isn't a pandemic going on. He's showing up at basketball games in grateful dead shirts and he's embraced everything that he probably had to bury for a very long time. Congo line coming from our free gave receptionist vicky driving that train leading the haredi onto the court. This was so much fun. We've done to do a really good job all the time. But he wants to do his way and his way is to have fun key. Eight a birthday candle. That was let off of a cupcake. He just swallowed the flame home during broadcast. Take a bite out of it. While it's lit ostade about the face for a lot of viewers. They want the nuts and bolts of a pick and roll offense or how you trap bill. Walton doesn't offer much of that bill walton wants to find a correlation between a slam. Dunk and the majesty of the grand canyon. He wants to see a perfect rotation for an open corner. Three and somehow relate that to a grateful dead concert imagination. It's not work. It's taking an idea of building a now synchronicity. What did you learn how to ucla. Or is that prior to your though. I learned that at my i did and i think the most fascinating part of this whole thing to me is that there are subsets of the internet. That either eight bill love. Bill are want to know what he's on and what he's on his life.

The Lead
The Return of Playoff Rondo
"So Bill Game One against Houston was Rozan rondos first game nearly six months. Can you break down everything that he went through with injuries? Yeah. It was interesting because this is a guy who has been slowly it feels like kind of breaking down as he's gotten older he had two broken fingers on his right hand last year his first year with the Lakers. This year he had a calf injury. He had an aversion fracture in his right ring finger and this is all before we get to March and the shutdown from the pandemic. So the Lakers are off for four months they go to. ORLANDO. Rajon Rondo is with the team their first practice inside the bubble Lakers guard Rajon Rondo has suffered a broken right thumb in. He's expected to return to full basketball activities in six to eight weeks, he's going to undergo surgery to repair the fact fracture this week. So he leaves the bubble has surgery. He's out for another six weeks or so the Lakers have a first round series against the Blazers Rondo, comes back to the bubble and is actually cleared to play for game three against the Portland Trailblazers, he's on the court getting ready. For that Game Rondo was listed as active tonight for the Lakers but was a late scratch with back spasms that happened. So, by the time, we got to game one of the second round against the rockets. There was kind of this sense of porcelain Rondo forget about it what level, but is he just going to be healthy enough to play and be able to stay healthy to make a contribution to this team? What does he had to say about all of these injuries he basically downplayed the injuries and said that these are the sorts of things that are going to frustrate. Anyone was very frustrating injury and step back I'm my career fourteen years have. Everything happens for a reason. Obsolete man says talks we. Still for the moment but the timing of this latest injury, the broken thumb and the back spasms I think particularly frustrating for him because this is a guy whose entire reputation and career is built on playoff performance on being a guy who really ramps it up in the postseason. Early, in his career uses a second your point guard with the Celtics out of Kentucky playing with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and Paul. Pierce and he ended up playing an instrumental role. You remember the two thousand, eight finals against the Lakers decisive blowout game. You know he had twenty one points against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers twenty one point seven rebounds eight assists six steals to give the Celtics a championship for that story franchises nearly ovation barrage. You've seen it win Lebron was in Miami. If you remember game three of these conference semi finals Rondo dislocated his elbow. Oh. Wow. Left arm hyper-extended boy. Didn't see it on that I replay certainly. Saw It there. When back to the locker room pop back in came back onto the court to help the Celtics with game. Time is pad. Rajon Rondo expired the crowd rare Boston. We've seen it time and time again in his career in these big moments, it's not superhuman. But when you take a player who is seen as a high level, but not superstar player can a hitting that superstar switch when the playoffs come then obviously a legend starts to grow. And for him did have another injury right when the Lakers were expecting to get him at his best was extremely frustrating. But the timing actually ended up working out he made it back for the second round series against the rockets and as we've seen was really no worse for the wear the Lakers got blown out by the rockets in game one. They're all going to be in a good mood tonight as the Houston Rockets when it one twelve to ninety seven. But after that, they rattled off four straight wins how much credit do you think Rondo deserves further taking that series. So easily I think you could make an argument that without Rajon Rondo certainly that the Lakers wouldn't have off the next four wins, but he was instrumental in games two and three and four also, but specifically games two and three with his performance in the fourth quarter game too. He knocked down a late jump shot to kind of hold off the rockets and what was a close game Rondo two. Point jump shot that's Rajon Rondo with a bucket right there ten points nine assists for Rondo and then engaged three. He was actually the guy who is Lebron James on the bench to start the fourth quarter in what was a close game at the start of that period he either scored or assisted on Lakers I eight possessions of that quarter to help kind of turn what had been another tight close game into a rout for the Lakers. Rondo. He'll three and Rondo hits another one largest laker lead tonight Rondo has. Been Spectacular and a nice Lee for Kuzma. This is sort of how his reputation has been built. But this also is kind of out of line with the way he's played for the Lakers over his first two years. He hasn't been the guy who has come up in the big moments or been clutch. You've seen the decline of a player who's in his mid thirties and has been in the League for fourteen years, but there has always been this belief from the Lakers that when the playoffs come that he. Would step up and have those sort of vintage Rondo performances and so what you saw was sort of this return to form that the Lakers have always promised would be there and you saw not only offensively. But also defensively when Houston started to make runs, it was Rajon Rondo who was picking up James Harden full court and pestering him into turnovers they double team Arden and get a steal and another round of bucket. That's a ten old laker run hard was trying to go behind the back Rondo was right there. In both game two in game three second-half possessions where rondos picking up James Harden. The former MVP of the league, hounding him into a turnover, taking his pocket and going the other way for layup that completely shifted momentum and those both are Lakers win. So when you look at what Rondo did in those two games, I, think you could easily say that the Lakers could have been down two. Oh, two one in the series instead of kind of romping to a five game series victory.
