"I think definitely because we talked about it. They have no incentive, like most teams in this situation can say blow it up, tank, and figure it out. They can't take. Like obviously they could trade Durant for a bunch of picks. It won't be their picks. So even if they get first round picks for the next few years and it type trade, it won't be theirs. And so they will be forever incentivized to win. They can not win. By trading Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The packages they are getting back are not going to result in winning. And so absolutely. I mean, Durant is under contract for four years. We're talking about the Kyrie deals, you know, when you say like, hey, they could either keep him and lose him for nothing. I mean, the packages we're talking about if we're being honest are slightly more than nothing because it is paying Russell Westbrook, which doesn't help you win next year. It's a 2025 or whatever it is 2027 first round pick. That would be sort of the only asset. Maybe the two first round picks. So if you could do that, but I definitely think I would say 60% Kyrie ends up on the Lakers 40% he stays. But here's the thing with Kyrie for me. Considering he could be a he's going to be afraid to next summer. He may not play. Yeah. Like if they are forcing his hand and saying, we're not going to trade you. Kyrie's type of guy that just may retired tomorrow. He probably won't even play. So he might do that even if he does get treated. Well, yeah. So, I mean, I don't think forcing him is going to be beneficial for Brooklyn 'cause I really don't think he'll suit up. If he is really stared fast on not playing there and wants to be a Laker and they're saying no, we're going to keep you and you're going to like it. Carrie's type of guy is going to stand up and say, I'm not playing for you. So I don't see how that would benefit Brooklyn.

"To, you know, the best offer that could be on the table. I'm looking at the potential candidates. You know, Memphis could probably make a pretty good offer, but Memphis is not gonna throw jaren Jackson or John morant into that deal. And even if it was Jackson Jackson gets hurt a lot to what he's heard now, he's gonna be on foreseen. He's out with a foot injury. And look, Desmond baines a nice player, but that's not a Jalen Brown level guy. Golden State, we've already ruled out Dallas doesn't have anybody. Utah, like, you know, he's not going to Utah. Denver, Denver, I guess maybe if they wanted to throw Porter junior and a whole bunch of guys into that mix, but I don't see that either. Minnesota, no New Orleans. No. Let's stop on New Orleans for a second. All right. New Orleans? All right, now I have all kinds of concerns about Zion. And if I'm David Griffin and the pelicans, I'd be really, really nervous about giving Zion this max extension. If I'm any team acquiring Zion anytime soon, I'm really, really concerned about him and his health and his longevity. But he is a still very young and incredibly talented and explosive player who if he stays healthy can change your team single handedly, right? You have to at least like, I don't know whether Kevin Durant's willing to go to New Orleans, but they have Zion. They have Brandon Ingram. They have CJ McCollum. They have a bunch of really good young interesting players. They have a bunch of the Lakers picks and swaps still from the Anthony Davis trade. That is a time. Who's the player going out? Who's the player going out though? You mentioned all the guys they have down there. Who's going out in a Durant trade? You're starting with Zion. You're asking for Zion first. Oh, I do. We're not deep into hypothetical territory. But yeah, I do Zion for the nets. Well, listen to the table. I just don't see why Durant would want to go if that's because CJ McCollum plus Brandon Ingram plus Kevin Durant plus other role players is a pretty good team. And for Jones much as anyone, but I'm not sure that all right, but listen, the nets are for the next side of it. Certainly you're getting a young potential superstar. I want to say potential and not actual because Zion, he hasn't finished a season yet. So I don't want to assume too much, but we know what the talent level is. If you can get Zion and all of the Lakers picks that the pelicans still own, that's a pretty good starting point, and you're probably going to get and you're going to get several of the other players as well. Maybe a herb Jones may be some of the other young guys. You're looking at it though from and look, I get what you're looking at it from. But from the net's perspective, why would the pelicans do that?.

"Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the NBA front office show. We've got a lot of news and transactions to break down today. I'm coming at you from Las Vegas at summer league here. Keith Smith joining me is always at Kate Smith and VA. You can find me at Trevor lane. Can you tell how are you doing? I thought when you were going to say Keith Smith joining me at, I thought you were going to say, is home office. Yeah, no, this is one, man, we get somewhere we go and chat homegrown, put them in the Hall of Fame already. But what did they view for him between great? Keegan Mari's looked pretty good in a couple of games. Flying high with your Lakers looking summer Lakers, I should say. But we'll break down some of our league later. We've got more than enough time. We get a million news stories and tidbits to get you free agent signs of picked back up and part of that might be because everybody's basically saying, I forget this Kevin Durant entry. I'm going to take care of me now. Right. Yep. And we've hit that point. We said that point would eventually come. We didn't know how long it would take, but here we are. Teams finally said, okay, we can't sit around and wait and see what the nets are going to do on Katie. And again, we talked about this last show. Can't fault the nets. This is a major, major decision for them what they do here. So I don't blame them for taking their time. It's a long process. There's a lot to get into, but the rest of the league kind of has to move on. But the nets also kind of moved on as well 'cause they took care of some business. The nets pick up, first and foremost, TJ Warren. That was a period of like 36 hours there where people were wondering what is going on with TJ Warren that set the pop up on his medicals, where is this guy like he's a wing and everybody's dying for wings that they need this kind of player. So why has he not been signed and then lo and behold, we get the news? I believe it was yesterday morning. It's all a blur to me at this point. But the TG award does wind up with the nets. What do you think about that? Does that signal anything to you as far as what the next plan is here, moving forward? It doesn't. Let's say they were to keep Kevin Durant into the season and maybe keep Kyrie Irving. I don't know. There is a thought that Mary, that's just a good depth addition, right? It would be title contender. If they are to move on from those guys, then I think this is Shawn marks, restarting the diamond mining process, right?

"Beginning what they may have the best player that could be thrown into a deal for Kevin Durant. Not the best player other teams have. Like Phoenix has Devin Booker, but you're not getting him. Dallas has Luka Dončić. You're not getting the number one player on all these teams. The number two player though is going to be available. I think jaylen Brown is as good as it gets in that mix. I love this for so many reasons. One of which is, as you mentioned, Boston was a team that got a meeting with Kevin Durant in the Hamptons back in 2016 when the warriors ultimately landed him. And I think there was even some chatter at the time that if he hadn't picked the warriors it would have been the Celtics. If I recall, I don't know, I don't know if that's true. I remember that being the meeting that Tom Brady popped into or something and Isaiah Thomas was on that team. Look, they were an interesting team. Brad Stevens at that point was starting to really separate himself as an NBA coach and they had a successful season before. So look, at the very least, they were in the mix. Well, for Kevin Durant. Back then, and there are better team now. I love, first of all, I also love the idea of almost the reverse of the pierce Garnett deal where the aging star is now going the other direction. Correct. Probably with more left in the tank than Pearson Garnett had, probably. On the other hand, the Celtics are the that's then get jaylen Brown, the guy that the Celtics picked with one of the picks that the nets set them in the piercing garnette deal. So there's a nice little coming home. There's a nice little poetic twist there where they get jaylen Brown a guy that they could have drafted themselves if they hadn't made that ill fated Garnett pierce deal. Listen, I get it. Fans get invested in their guys, especially when your team just made the finals. You don't want to see a core player.

"I wouldn't do it. I don't understand why they would want to do it at all. But just in terms of detaching him from the whole, his perambulations, you know, he's been in search of redemption in a sense. Ever since he left the Golden State, then he was lambasted for ringing, you know, searching and hunting and piling on a team that already proven it can win without him. Okay, so he has a success there. And then skips out of there. I mean, you know, he wants, I think he wants the thing he wants to be loved, but he'll never be loved the way others have that. Like I'll never be loved the way set this love. And it won't even I don't know whether we declare that LeBron is now mostly loved, I certainly respect them. I don't have any problems with what he's done, you know, I long ago forgave him for the decision because my God, yeah, I was 12 years ago. I know it to me. That was such a great people. Get over it. I mean, I think LeBron has been great for the league. If that's the worst thing you can come up with to pin on LeBron James, then she semi made immense for it. You know, I think so. But just to wrap up the rant here. I just think that it's a real shame because I think he's I mean, he's one of the greatest players to ever play the game. And I think that that's going to be forgotten a little bit. Well, I'll try to make sure when my hand at that will happen. He's in the discussion. He's a top ten all time player. I always forgot that he was 7 feet. I don't want to talk like that he's retiring. I always forgot he was 7 feet. Yeah, well, same with Garnett and that kind of set the table for those guys. The set of E was not going to be labeled as the center. We're not going to be able to allow it to be positioned as a 5 man. And Durant has never ever had to worry about that. I think one reason he has never had to worry about that was the example that was set by Garnett. So the Joseph something. All right. Now let's get to the move on to the Celtics and the moves that they've made. Yes. Our colleague Jeff Goodman is on assignment.

"Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman podcast. NBA, some college, a little bit of everything. You know, what can I say, but it wasn't going to happen here with him. I was okay with it because it wasn't about talent I didn't think. All right, let's get right to it. Okay, folks, it's the off season, supposedly. And like all the other sports, the NBA and free agents and all the deal making is so forth as well, it's just as big and just as popular as the games themselves, scary tag way you're in love with bob Brian it is the riot of podcasts. Jeff is on a plane right now. We are going to hear from him later on. Thanks to technology. He's going to give us his comments on what's going on with the Celtics. But this program is powered by our partners who have been online as they continue to be the number one source for all your betting needs and sports information. Okay, bob, let's get to it. We got a lot going on now. Yeah. The crazy thing with Durant. Reporting that the warrior sons raptors and heat all in position. To make a deal for Durant, he wants out Kyrie's back in, what do you make of this whole thing? God, it isn't soap opera. And his life, his career. Because we know that Irving's is unprecedented in NBA history. But Durant is certainly carving out a unique path for himself and this is I mean, what are they going to have to give up? What are they giving up if they get them? I mean, they're the funny champs, they're in good shape. They have lost a couple of their depth components and Payton a second and auto Porter each of them are left them, but they did resign ludi. The core core that is still left, I don't know. Well, let's take bob, but one thing that came to my mind is right, okay, if you're the warriors, do you need to make this deal? No. No, you don't. You don't need to make it. So then you go to the suns, right? The suns are a team that they're trying to get over the hump. So Booker just signs an extension. What do you do there? Because if you're the next, I want Booker. I mean, Peter, rob Peter to pay Paul, and more or less, this is what is going to be intriguing about it.

"So the Lakers don't have enough to attach. The math doesn't work. The math doesn't work, yeah. Yeah, and honestly, if your goal is to win the NBA championship, you're probably just better off with the Kyrie Irving Joe Harris. Deal. And let's be clear here. We don't know if Joe Harris is on the table here. Joe Harris has, I believe, two years left at like 16 a year, something like that. The nets love Joe Harris. He's been there forever. He is a huge part of their organization. From everything I gather. I don't know that Joe Harris would be immediately on the table in the way that other people would, which is why I also bring in potentially Seth curry as like another option here. To make the math work because you need another salary with Kyrie just to make the math work with Russell Westbrook's contract. This is a get out of jail free card for the Lakers. It just really is like, I get that you want to publicly posture and I get that you want to do all this stuff. And if I'm the nets and ultimately it comes down to do I think I'm moving Kevin Durant and I don't know if I'm moving Kevin Durant or not. I would think given he asked for a trade, I would very strongly look into that. But if you're moving Kevin Durant, then you're not doing any better than like taking on the rust deal and getting two first round picks back from the Lakers, right? Even if there are protections on them, or like an unprotected and a 28 pick swap. It's the only trait that makes sense for both teams. Because who's taking who can take on the risk of Kyrie? What other NBA franchise? Like, honestly. If you could, what other NBA franchise would take him? So just mathematically. Right. Coming up with deals that work CBA wise, the Mavericks could put together something like, you know, Dwight Powell and, you know, what Dwight Powell and Tim Hardaway junior, Dwight Powell, and Davis Bertrand's, like something like that, like one of those two. You know, you get off the Powell money. If you're the next in a year and then you have the longer term hardly junior dove Sparta's money.

"Okay, so here's the drama regarding the Knicks. The nets, excuse me. Kyrie may want a new contract and since that may be the situation to rant may want out of Brooklyn. If you're a Brooklyn guy, do you want both of these jokers to leave? I'll start with you, Jeff. No, I don't want Kevin Durant to leave. I believe in you're building around Ben Simmons. You can't shoot the ball and refuse to shoot the ball. So no, I do everything in my power to keep Kevin Durant. And I think Kevin Durant has to understand at this point. You know what? He made a mistake. He made a mistake. I mean, you left staff in the team with Kyrie, like it couldn't have been a worse decision for his career than what Kevin Durant made. And you know what? Be a big boy on up to it. And move on and try to find somebody else, try to find a different running mate. You know, and then again, you got Ben Simmons, hopefully healthy. And if you find somebody else, you can still win another title, or at least compete for one. I am totally bored with the Kyrie Irving court, I'm tired of it. And you know, I'll go back to what I said and accurately, by the way, when he was with Boston. And that is that among the other things I said, this will not be his last step in the NBA. There will be several more stops as every team gets him and then finds out why you don't want him. And that's that. As skilled as he is, and even last night watching some highlights and oh my God, I forgot, you know, he will sustain the hope is easily as any person his size ever has in the history of this game. I agree that. But he's not worth it. He is not worth the aggravation. He said, who will let you down? He will let you down. He's not trustworthy, reliable. He doesn't have any. Wants to take this on. At the money we're talking about, too, by the way. It's so sad. I mean, honestly, it's become sad at this point that we're talking about Kyrie Irving this way, right? Like, you know, he, like you said, he's so talented, but he's such a locker room, I don't know if killers the right word, but lawyer. Disruption disruption. Well, I just don't know what Durant's thinking. When he sits and he says, well, if Kyrie's not going to be here, I'm not going to be here. I don't know what happened to Kevin Durant. I have not. Yeah, no. That's fair. That's fair. I think it started. I still say this. I think it all started for Kevin Durant. When he chose to go to Golden State, he was the golden boy before that. Nobody ever said anything negative about him ever..

"This team is a 7 seed for a reason. And going into the series, there was a lot of a lot of respect for Kevin Durant, of course. But he's going up against the best defense in the league, a defense that is basically constructed to there's never been a defense that could successfully shut him down. But as good of a defense as he's ever faced in his life, Tatum is the best player in the series easily and just dominating the one on one matchup guarding Durant. As the primary defender in every game. So in terms of his legacy, this will be if they do lose the recording this on a Monday afternoon. If the nets do lose if they're swept, this will be the second first round series to ran has ever lost. He's a great, great, great, great player. I don't think this impacts too much of how we should view him. I think that how the nets have been coached, how the nets have been constructed, their decisions as an organization are much more emblematic of their struggles in this series. And so that's where I'll leave that. I think the way that Doran has been defended has been magnificent and sure, he could hit more shots, but there's a lot of issues going on in Brooklyn. Yeah, so first of all, I'm with you. I think his legacy is, I think his legacy is he's the best scorer ever. And I think he's undeniably like a top ten talent ever. I think kind of where the resume or accomplishments ultimately end up might be a little bit up for debate. I think if we want to go there, I think in a vacuum, most of us would say he's a better player than Steph Curry, but I think Steph is going to finish his career and rightfully so as the more accomplished player..

The Confusion Behind the NYC COVID Policy

"Kevin Durant, talking about the strange COVID policies of the mayor of New York. One of their players, his name is Kyrie Irving, he's not been vaccinated, but because of the law in New York, he can not play. In New York. On the road, however, he can play. Now get this, a visiting opponent in Brooklyn in the same stadium where Kyrie Irving can not play can play even if that player has not been vaccinated. Let me see if I can get this straight. Kyrie Irving has not been vaccinated, he's a member of the Brooklyn Nets. Because of the law in New York, he can not play with his team, but on the road he can play. Even though one would think on the road, he's jeopardizing health of his teammate and his opponents just as he would be jeopardizing the health of his teammates and opponents in Brooklyn, if he were to play, not being vaccinated. However, an opposing player who's not been vaccinated can come to the Brooklyn Nets stadium, where Kyrie Irving can not play because he's not been vaccinated, even though that player has not been unvaccinated, and that player can play.

"But I'm also curious Kirk how unusual this is in the context of age. Because at age 33, right now, Kevin Durant is allegedly well beyond his prime and so what is the data say about how players in general tend to change their games as they start getting up there in years? Yeah, well, generally when you think of an aging curve and MBA score, a lot of them, whether you're talking about Michael Jordan or LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Carmelo Anthony, when they're young men, they attack the paint, the teeth of the defense, their springy, they can bounce back off the floor and not get hurt. And as they get older, they sort of lean into jump shots more. We saw this from Dirk Nowitzki, obviously Kobe, Michael Jordan. Like as a rookie, Kobe Bryant took 37% of his shots within three feet of the rim. In his final season Pablo, that number dipped to 9%. Carmelo Anthony attempted 45% of his shots as a rookie within three feet of the rim. Last season that figure was just 6%. For Kevin, it's not dipping that much, but his activity in that same zone has been cut in half as we watched him go from sort of a young man to a 33 year old trying to come back from these lower leg injuries. It feels retro, man. It feels like there's a vinyl aspect to this. The idea that Kevin Durant is doing the stuff that was cool, like, I don't know 20 years ago now, just how stark of a cultural renaissance is this for the mid range jumper. Well, before I get into the numbers, I do agree that it's really cool and a throwback sort of way. And it's beautiful. It's a great point just the aesthetics of this, right? Because the three as an aesthetic object, as much as Steph has single handedly done as much as anyone possibly could to make that as maximally cool as it could be. The two point jumper man, it's way more cool. Yes. The difficulty of trying to spring open a two point fadeaway jumper. I mean, that's the stuff that gets my 90s NBA fan nostalgia until. The craziest that we dug up of Durant this season is not just as efficiency, 98% of his shots or jump shots are contested. That's the highest number in the league bob low. And when you watch the game, when you watch Michael Jordan or Kobe at their absolute best, they set it to their opponent's faces. They got into the teeth of the defense and they shot in your face and Dirk did it too and there was nothing you could do about it. Like, yes, another Kevin Love catch and shoot three is worth three points. And that's more than two points. I get it. But as a pure fan of the sport aesthetically, there's something cooler about doing it to your defender in the face. And that is kind of gone. Kevin is making that cool again. I do realize now that we both sound like Michael wilbon, Kirk, so let's go. Let's inject some enlightened mathematics here. So just how stark is it, though, that this is happening at this moment given the trends around these types of shots in this sport. Since Kevin entered the league on Halloween night in 2007, the league's three point rate has nearly doubled. It was 22.1%, meaning 22% of the league's shots were three pointers when he started as a rookie. This year, that number is 40%. That's nearly doubled. Much of that growth has come directly at the expense of mid range shots and Durant's rookie year NBA shooters attempted 32.9% of their shots in the mid range this season that figure is just 13.1%. That's a huge drop. Wow. Yeah. So Durant's taking 43% of his shots in that same area that the league is now taking only 13% of their shots. And the last time I was on the daily, I think we talked about Russell Westbrook, who will always be associated with Kevin because they grew up together as members of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Yes. And I think it's particularly interesting in the context of Westbrook who has not been able to sort of evolve into a great jump shooter and whose overall efficiency as he ages into his 30s is up on trial right now in Los Angeles. Right. And part because he can't hit the exact same shots that Kevin can hit from ten, 20, 25 feet away. I think what's most noteworthy here is that Kevin Durant is on pace to win his 5th scoring title only Michael Jordan Wilt Chamberlain have done that. And if he does it, he's gonna have done it after an 8 year sort of hiatus from that trophy, which would be the longest such gap. So he is threatening to win a scoring championship doing it in a way that Kobe or Michael would do. Which definitely please his old heads like will bond and let's face it like myself who grew up watching Michael and sort of was trained to think that's what great players should be doing. So Kevin Durant fundamentally is a conservationist curve. He is a throwback to a different time, and also somebody who's trying to protect these endangered creatures. In a world where mid rangers are in danger species, Durant is like the Jack Hannah of the NBA Pablo. Regularly reminding us on national television, how majestic and how important these special creatures can be these mid range shots. And also, quietly how dangerous all of them still might be to you. Yes, it's like when Jack Hannah would hand the weird lizard to Johnny Carson and that's sort of like when Russell Westbrook tries to handle the mid range shot, I think..

Positive have symptoms in which he would be gone for a couple of weeks. If not more we do not know right now. However those are two major impactful stories for the western conference but jalen we finally get to talk about what kevin durant did. Last night in brooklyn in game five a pivotal game in the series kevin durant played every single second of the game and scored forty nine points had seventeen rebounds and ten assists a dynamic historic performance from durant. Don't want to let that drop. I did a bunch of reading as prep to rate the piece that i did last week. Joe alluded to earlier. But there was one thing i missed that. A guy named michael right flagged on twitter and that thing is both nuts on its own but also in my view extremely telling and it begins in june two thousand and three that is when a baylor basketball player named patrick denny. He went missing. A lot of folks are probably familiar with us. This is the reason that when people say well look at what the baylor basketball program came back from. This is what it came back from So in june. Two thousand and three patrick and he goes missing in july. His body was found in a gravel pit near waco texas an autopsy determined. The dentist had been shot and killed in the man who did it. It turned out was one of his teammates. Carlton dotson two years later in two thousand and five dotson pleaded guilty to the murder and he's been in prison in texas ever since but let's rewind to two thousand and three so unrelated to the murder. Then baylor coach. Dave bliss had been paying denki under the table. This was a major violation in bliss. Did not want dicky's killing to expose it and so as dana wrote in a piece on. Espn dot com. Bliss told his assistant coaches. He wanted to float the story that he was a drug dealer thereby explaining away. The money bliss had given him one of those assistant coaches that bliss was talking to was a man named abar rouse resident hired at baylor just weeks before he went missing. When rows told bless he wasn't comfortable with the plan to smear dennehy as a drug dealer as ross's a normal human being with some form of a moral compass. Bliss reportedly put a copy of rouse's contract highlighting the portion that showed he could hire and fire assistant. Coach is in front of rows. And so the implication is very clear right like do this or else in so baruch's did something that in my view quite sensible. He recorded dave less and on that recording. Bliss says reasonable doubt is. There's nobody right. Now that can say we paid pat dennehy because he's dead so what we need to do is create reasonable. Doubt rouse gave that tape to the ncaa resigned and that tape-recording ended up killing ibar roses career. Roses story is told that length in the two thousand seventeen documentary disgraced at aired on showtime the short version is the rouse. Never got a d. one coaching job again. As of two thousand seventeen he had found work consistent work teaching and he was teaching in a prison in fort worth texas. So why did they borrow skip blacklisted. Because in the world of college basketball rouse was not a hero for exposing dave bliss rather he was considered a villain for tape-recording coach in two thousand and three episode of espn's outside the lines. Three of the most famous and influential coaches in the game. All said that what a don was absolutely wrong does three jim boeheim kelvin sampson and the man of the hour. Mike shefty and here is the clip of what coach k. Said on outside the lines in two thousand three. How could you ever build a team of coaches. Forget about justice situation but if one of my sisters with tape every one of our conversations with me not knowing it. There's no way he would be on my staff even as a theoretical exercise. It's hard to think of something. That's so clearly illustrates the skewed priorities and moral bankruptcy of big time college. Coaching a normal person. I think would consider a hero or at the very minimum. What understand why he did what he did and realized that he was in the right. Then i guess the next category over it would be someone who believes that rouse had broken some kind of moral coaching code. But maybe what understand that. It's probably not wise or good to say that publicly. Like maybe keep that to yourself if you feel that way. And then there's the category that these coaches and make among them fall into which has publicly as leading figures in the sport coming out and saying that roused had broken code and essentially issuing a warning to others in the profession that they should look at what happened to us. I imagined this study isn't taught at duke. University's fuqua coach k. Center on leadership ethics. Nor do i think that there is an abar rouse center on leadership and ethics but perhaps in both cases we should address that yeah gives us some insight into how these institutions routinely cover up abuses and other terrible practices like joe. Paterno penn state michigan state. You know every other kind of disgusting scandal. We see that sort of attitude prevails within these institutions in these big programs that it's much more important to them to preserve themselves than to like. We might consider to be moral. So yeah. I took. As i think you will note and listeners. Were note like pretty great pains to try to be fair and our segment and give praise him when it's warranted and give credit where do but like this is just so unbelievable to me that it does. I think legitimately raise questions about what kind of person would would do this. And i'm not trying to say he's the coach k.'s. Evil or anything like this. But by my god stephan yeah. It seems like that was a pretty clear cut case where you had an opportunity to just say what happened was despicable in horrible and and as a coach. It saddens me. Instead of having to weigh in on the the ethics of taping. Goodbye coach k. That is our show for today..

"With bob knight with like moulding him into the person that he is and we're all products of our and so i think he felt like what had benefited him in what had been done to him and for him would benefit others and also. I think we really need to acknowledge that his players seemed to really revere him. It's not like there's a trail of duke. I mean there. Might there might be some. I don't wanna like universal's here but it's not like there's an enormous number of duke is running around and saying coach k. As a fraud or coach k. Didn't more common is like he's the most important person in my life and like like jay bilas said this this past week and so by the standards of that he set for himself and by the standards of his profession he'd not only succeeded but excelled i just think the standards of the profession or whacked. And i i think we'll wait is wack. I think all of these guys are wacked and just again. The thing that rankles for me is the way in which he was only judged by the kind of morals and ethics of the sport not a larger system of morals and ethics that would maybe guide someone away from being the lake dominant figure in this sport that has profited off of unpaid players. That had him. You know making millions off of a nike deal when his players got nothing that had him. You know all of the things that we've discussed at length and for years on the show about and isn't the issue that coach k. had the ability. He had the afford the moral authority to change the system. Maybe more than anybody else to the extent. There's no commissioner of college basketball but he's the closest. I think that we had to somebody who could've been played that role right but you're asking him to do something that he fundamentally doesn't believe endo. I totally agree but it just feels like a missed opportunity and something that when we're talking about his legacy you have to think about the opportunity cost like what could what could someone who actually was the person that people say that coach k. Was like what could that person have accomplished. Yeah but here's the thing. So i mean i get it because obviously you know. I believe that it's morally wrong to not play college. Athletes and i balanced that while saying you know college. Athletics important for whole swath of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to get a free college education. But i mean what did we sort of expect of coach k. Like we really expect him to do in this environment and keep in mind. It's very recently that people have sort of come around to the idea that players have some sort of you know they have a right to their name image and likeness or that maybe there should be some alternatives for people who don't want to go through that ncwa pipeline like only now. Is that stuff sort of opening up. This isn't a thing that has been going on for a couple decades and furthermore most people don't even believe the things that we believe that most college sports fans most college athletics fans don't believe we want coach k. To believe in this instance. So it doesn't like i'm sort of judging him. By the standards of his profession of the people that that he would consider to be his constituency and by that standard coach k. Basically did about as well as you can do. Yeah but there's more to it though. Because yes i think. Coach k.'s universally regarded as a good person. His relationship with jim valvano is often cited as an example of coach k.'s generosity and decency but when coach k. was challenged or there was a A situation where duke lost. He did not always come off as to put it mildly a generous person. Or a good loser albert burnett echo in defector in the piece in a piece titled the see later to this butthead wrote he is also in arguably the greatest self promoter in the college games history. Thin-skinned vicious bully a sanctimonious skuld and a petty sore loser who has mostly successfully portrayed himself and say humble and principal educator and molder of honorable men over the nearly half a century during which he reaped fortune on a claim beyond measure off the work of unpaid laborers. So there is a personality thing. And if you're not a duke fan you absolutely latched onto that yet. I actually feel like the personality stuff is a little bit overplayed like the people that are like he curses and so but in public. He doesn't use curse words. It's like he's a coach. It's like that that part i feel. I feel like the critics of coach k. It's like you get a little bit out over your skis. If you're focused on that stuff. I don't know calling a bunch of student reporters to the that the lead of my head. I mean what does that reflect. I mean it's a long time ago and he claims that he had some sort of come to jesus moment after that and was troubled by it but still complained that the kids should have apologized coaches at the time of for the most a lot of you can't be a good coach without being petty right by a control freak and you know you sort of have to believe you have to believe in your way and like few people lived up to that in the way the coach k. Did but i guess like. It's interesting. Because i kind of wanted to talk about how good he was as a coach though because i mean for all of the things that we say about him that he's stuck in sort of this old. This old art type of college basketball coaches. He was extremely great like adjusting to the times. At least when it came to like program building he was fine at adjusting. He figured out a way to stay relevant and great and near the top of his profession from the start to the finish of his career. And that's just not something that you see a lot. Yeah i think that's totally true and you know. Obviously he was a great game coach to his career is long enough that we can't really linger on any of you know even if we don't have time to talk about any of the five championships individually but he was there. There weren't many people that you would argue. Where better at xs and os roster management than. He was but the fact that he moved to more of the one in don model kind of starting with kyrie. Irving moving into jason tatum. And then kind of zion. Williamson is the last kind of talismanic player of the coach k. era. I'm curious what you guys think about that. And also in the interest of fairness we should note that he came out publicly in favor of name image and likeness big leader but he even if he grudgingly came along. He did come along and so. That's something that that's worth noting. The my question is with the sort of like move away from all players have to stay for years and that's the only way to do college basketball to like one and done okay. And i'm going to recruit them and hopefully they'll lead me. The championships does that to you. Feel like kind of moral compromises. I only care about winning or does it feel like here's a guy who is adjusting to the times and like good good for him and like one in done is more moral than saying. Oh we only take for you. Guys i think on morality scale i tip toward calipari in kentucky saying look. I'm here to help. These guys get careers to help them become successful professionals and make millions of dollars in the nba. More honest than saying. Oh these guys are gonna have a chance to get an education..

"Announced that he will retire after the twenty twenty one. Twenty two season. That means the seventy four year old sheesh ascii the winningest coach in division one. Men's basketball history will likely stage in ireland. Deuces farewell tour in its final year on the sideline but our very own josh got. The sendoff started thursday in a piece. Headlined what was mike skis mission really in the essay josh open with open the peace with an anecdote about the time she eski summoned the sports department of the campus newspaper to berate them about an article about his team that he didn't like josh. You also closed the piece by writing that she was a vicious competitor. A self-appointed moral arbiter and a basketball coach inclined to blow the whistle on anything but the crooked pastime that he made his own. Okay so josh. You're very busy man. We all know this. What about coach k. And his announcement that day meet you set aside some time to eulogize the end of his career. So it's like if you to see a concert and they don't play take on me you gotta you gotta play the hits all you gotta give people what they want and you know. This is what the people expect from. I don't wanna disappoint the readers. I don't want to disappoint the listeners. The the thing that always has rankled me about coach k. And i think people sometimes misunderstand. It's not that. I think that he's particularly load some character compared to his peers. It's i think he's exactly like his peers and that he and his program his school and their fans make him out to be something that he isn't and what he is is the most important figure in modern college basketball. The best coach and most successful coach in modern college basketball and a person in this is the point. I made in the piece that has never done anything to change what college basketball is and what it will be and so i think his legacy stephan is one of continuity and maintenance and he is somebody who i think as far as the ncaa is. Concerned was a godsend in creating this image however accurate or inaccurate or was of college basketball as this more all endeavor as a place for education and learning and where the kind of transcended like montana mir sport. And i think that that's true. I think that that's a damaging image that he helped to create an. It's one that's i think. In recent years people are becoming wiser to but to the extent that that fiction was maintained for as long as it has been. I think he was a major reason for that. And the fiction was maintained at a time when other coaches were getting taken down when college basketball as an entity was viewed with increasing skepticism. Not as if it wasn't in the nineteen seventies and nineteen eighties before chef ski rose to power. But what's your chef. Skied has done. I think josh and joel is that he exploited the willingness of the public to believe that it was possible to run a major college sports program in a way that defied the popular notion of what college sports had become and suggests ski. Did that in two ways one was for many years recruiting players whom he encouraged to stay for his own benefit of course because the older and more mature and better. They got the more likely that duke was to win a championship. But also as a matter of public relations what szumowski did was give duke the motor to raise millions upon millions of dollars for that institution and cement. It's ability to be power in this sport. Yeah i think it's important to remember that. He is a former player. And minty of bobby knight. Who was the all time winningest. Men's coach in division one history before mike shuster muskie and that is exactly the binary by which bob night live by. It's important to remember that. Bobby knight is posed as sort of alternative to guys like jerry tarr canaan eddie sutton who finally just now got inducted into the college basketball hall of fame so being being a sanctimony grandfatherly figure is part and parcel of being legendary college coach. If you come out of that era and to thrive in that ecosystem you pretty much to pose a someone of moral rectitude but also for somebody for whom basketball means more than a game. Keep in mind. That john. Wooden first of all before i move on from. Wouldn't i mean. In retrospect we know the john wooden wasn't clean. He wasn't a perfect he. Wasn't this perfectly clean figure. I mean if anybody just google sam gilbert and ucla if you want to know about how ucla got it done in the fifties and sixties right or think about joe paterno bobby bowden all these guys who sort of built up this image of more rectitude and sort of cut off his falling away as they retired after they retired. So i mean to coach k.'s. Credit he made it through all that with very few. Very few controversies that stick to him in his legacy at the end of the day like he's going to retire with because he basically got through this time without having you know one of those big blow ups like his mentor bobby knight or he didn't get busted for running a dirty program even though the allegations that he did and so he got out of kind of the right time. To the extent like admiration form he'd navigated a really dirty business profited off of it and got out before the cycle ran. Its course yeah. I think that's right. And i think i always want to kind of take pains to give credit where it's due and not exaggerate. What i think his failings are and where i think the credit is due is like i think there is some sincere belief that underlies what he's done in his approach like he's a guy who came out of chicago and got an opportunity to go to west point and credits for and his experience.

"Speaking so Kevin Durant says you know what it wasn't about going to the team that was our rival because we only played one time in the playoffs it just so happened it was the Western Conference finals right before he was a free agent he says I was tired of being the only guy who could hit threes oops you know the whole Russell Westbrook responses coming right this is gotten back to Russell Westbrook it will elicit a response at some point there's no way that Wes Russ west brook does not respond to this that's the direction now there are other guys on the team the for sure we're not jump shooters and could hit threes what what the wealth Russell Wilson sorry Russell Westbrook is the guy who along with Kevin Durant was doing a lot of the scoring he was the guy that was now what became a guy who would average a triple double the year after but certainly to hear Kevin Durant say he left because he felt like he was the only viable shooter well that's not going to sit well with his former teammate who obviously is now on to Houston after hours here on CBS sports radio one last thing the attitude of Kevin Durant about social media about people trying to get all up in his grill in telling what to do yeah that was pretty evident on this podcast when you get to this level you that good at something for everybody for like that that they can tell you was best for you you know I mean as like fever from the team I want to go to to what I said Twitter is by everybody got it there but I feel like they know is best or am I appreciate so you know but I got through the yeah that's generally his attitude I haven't looked at his Twitter in awhile but the last time I looked his avatar hit I'm sorry he's bio was I'm me I do me and I chill and do you remember he's had burger account in the past I don't know if he still has that were he claps back at people who what a Dick criticize him but he could do it anonymously so he thought and he'll take members of the media to task for what he feels like are unfair criticisms or what he feels like our pot shots at him and his beef with Brandon Tierney was about something that Brandon said here on CBS sports radio and and maybe obviously tweet as well but he was talking about how he wanted guys who wanted to play on the biggest stage in that the New York connects would have been a much bigger stage than Brooklyn that the next in Madison Square Garden would have put him in the spotlight whereas playing in Brooklyn is like choosing the ugly red headed stepchild so to speak it it's like operating with little brother in relative anonymity now I don't know that I agree with all of that and Brandon is a New York guy so he he's more in touch with the poles of New York I'm not even sure that's a fair criticism because I feel like forever Kevin Durant goes the spotlight is sure to follow and maybe just maybe if the nets build a winner there around Katie and Kyra Irving well the nets then overshadow the next but that was Brandon's opinion and Kevin Durant took him to task on Twitter it turned into this big it's Katie gets tired of people telling you what you should do we worry should go in and saying things about him that are true in his opinion it's funny because I tweeted the this is such a small by comparison but I tweeted the whole deal about how I was eating chips this weekend and some guy right back and says make the piece of fruit girl first of all I ate lots of route this weekend actually the fruit smoothie bananas blueberries whatever's that's beside the point but it does get annoying when people feel like they can tell you what to do people who don't know you don't know you personally don't know anything about you except for what they see on social media what they hear on my radio show or the case of Kevin Durant they only see him in a basketball setting and yet they feel like they can be up in your business and tell you what to do course I didn't respond because there's a different standard of accountability for people who are public figures on social media for the then for those who are anonymous and have no accountability so I've learned to let that stuff go but I will agree it gets really annoying when people tell you how to live your life just because they have a platform and social media where they feel like they care so that part I agree with I can't even imagine being famous and being Kevin Durant shoes I don't think I would read it I think it at at some point I would cut it off and and I might use it but there's no way that I'd be constantly reading what people responding to me I I would just cut off mentions in her look at them all right you can buy me on Twitter a all radio we got our pull up how did you like the inaugural weekend of the XFL also on Facebook page a lot of your weighing in it was five finally the completion of the Mookie Betts trade for the red Sox made out a little bit better I was wondering if they might pull back all together that did not happen so murky is headed to the Dodgers the after hours CBS sports radio here's our latest sports updates and here's Marco Belletti sports way all right Amy will the Dodgers.

The warriors just announced Kevin Durant, calf strain is unlikely to return for the start of the finals, but they're hopeful he returned at some point during the finals, he has not been cleared yet for on court activities. So I just got I'm going to throw this out there. This is my theory on this. This is I'm just gonna throw this out. That what is because they're win. They winning all these games without. K D, what's the value of coming back? Until the Golden State Warriors trail. There's no value if you come back game one and you lose that's not great. If I'm Kevin Durant. I just watched the finals. And then if Golden State is down to one, I come in, and I say the day, but if you don't think branding matters, I'm dead serious. This sounds crazy now. I don't think it sounds crazy. I think he's really hurt. I don't I don't think he is. I don't think he's going back to the finals at all. That's a long. That's a tough injury to recover from you have to rest forever. "You have more options, you can do what you wanna do, especially if you have the choice, do it, you're going to do it. Right. I want to stay in warm weather. I'm pretty sure a lot of these guys they wanna come to warm weather. That's twenty years. I've been hearing I heard now. Carmelo went east because he engineered a trade, Kevin Durant trade. So I don't know. It's a. Casino mobile. Good. You see to joy with the news. No, no, no. This is the headline news. Well, you never been a raptors believer all year. No. And a lot of people felt like they were done. They went down to you felt like they were done after the off the first game blue out Milwaukee last night, once one zero to even up the series two piece why Leonard being injured in tired, and Seok them suffering from foul trouble. But why still the damage thirty four minutes and said after the game he will keep fighting? Good can keep going keep fighting. We have a chance. So no make means no excuses you playing basketball. And no, we got to win. So fun to watch everything. I mean apart from the fact that I've been extra extra right about Hawaii, after's. So it's a little enjoyable for me. I was probably equally as wrong about the bucks. Although I did say he all year. I think that what's happening with Hawaii is like I said, we, we kind of just forgot because he wasn't playing because of the way the exit went with the Spurs any also must a bunch of games this year. Yes. Yes. And he did take a lot of rest days this year. We didn't know that he was this goody like it just slipped. Everyone's mind like oh, yeah. There was a point where the conversation was is better than LeBron because he is better on both ends of the co or he, he does play ten and given up a plan. But I do think the raptors end up winning the series like you said, they're kind of, it's kind of the same situation to star in each side, and that would not be a good point. Yeah. Oh, god. I think Milwaukee pushes back a little I, I think the raptors would be got. Got Golden State of Kevin Durant comes back has four dependable scoring. I have no faith going to come back to the vinyl. I think they've, I think they would have I think Golden State would hammer Toronto and five without Kevin Durant, if he just gave him boogie for a little thighs a little size. You think bookies sick? I, I just think Milwaukee. Yeah, here's the thing, Golden State when they face Milwaukee, it's real easy to figure out what they're going to do. They're going to put you on us at the line, and they're going to move the ball and shrink the bucks because the bucks are big, and they're going to play a tiny lineup and they're, they're gonna force Milwaukee to go small, and then it just a blowout. They're going to try to you can't take you on us off the court. But you could take every big except you on us off the court. I think Golden State's gonna chop them up Toronto, I think is complete utter mismatch, especially if Kawhi is not one hundred percent. And right now he looked fire than either way. Both of these teams are going to be fatigued going into the finals. They have had an incredible amount of rest. Nine days very, they're going to have a long series. So Kevin Durant is is known for popping back at fans on the internet, and his manager rich climate isn't bothered by it at all. In fact, he loves everything about it. How do you feel about that, that he gets in there mixing it up? Sometimes I love it. I know enough to know that, that doesn't represent anything more than what it is. And Kevin has every right to gauge and communicate and have fun and banter because he's had thirty one year old man who's built this or thirty year old man, just built this incredible enterprise from self. We have honest, conversations, but never would I call them and say, like that's such a bad thing to do for your brand. With anyone going back at fans on the internet. I do about once every couple of weeks. Yeah..

"I don't even know where he stands when either step or Kevin Durant can go off at any given time ROY any last thing I'll say when he walked into the arena, he had like the deaths there. It was like it was. It was just this point. Like, he like you saw what was going to happen before I've seen that look before it was there. Well, there is this talk about him in Pat. Beverley Pat Beverley defense and whether Pat Beverley can stop him. The warriors went so far as to make like a mixed tape of Pat Beverley, grabbing and pushing and hounding annoying Nick sent it to the NBA league offices. Ryan is this normal routines? Normally do this to sort of like snitch on opponents. We do this all the time. It happens all the time. And obviously Patrick Beverley got in trouble last night. So anytime that you see the hands hooked around the ways that ends up being called a foul, you anytime you see sue hands. And obviously pictured actually wasn't grabbing him in a lot of those situations. Just the hand was there and is actively really bothering Kevin Durant. So all the time that message gets sent out and what Kevin Durant is saying what he's feeling what he's voicing. That's nuts. Thing different than what every single NBA player does. Kevin Durant is not this outlier. Kevin Durant is not sensitive. What he's doing is telling a lot of you the truth and my frustration too. Is that a lot of people? They can't wait until something negative happens. Kevin around and in this. There's this outpour tax and goes after him and this dude is nothing but workers tail off and work hard and give you good basketball. And you know who would want to wanna championship to Jacoby gum. Oh, man. Well, he certainly got championship or two maybe even three on the way, but they will have to do. So without the help of DeMarcus cousins Ryan how much is the cuts is injury going to impact this team as they move forward in the playoffs. This is this is huge. Because if we have to look at one glaring weakness in the Golden State Warriors, it's inside they were one of the worst teams in the entire NBA before boogie cousins came back in rebounding and defense as the inundate they can switch. Versatile. They do any and everything that you can imagine from team on the floor. But they what they were lacking enrolling relying on with boogie was rim protection. And in the game one who's actually negative seventeen. So the numbers actually don't help who would boogie does is. He's an enforcer. They will not be pumped in the pain. You'll never have to worry about that. With boogie cousins on your team, even if it's booking playing in five or ten minutes spurts, he'd ready attitude and toughness, and if they read into another big man or team that just pounds the glass house paint that could be a problem on that said and done you. It has been he was excellent yesterday. And I thought that the warriors really looked like the warriors outside of Kevin Durant being Kevin Durant, obviously. Because the ball moves there. The defense took it to another level, and they were so good on both ends of the floor because of Andrew bogut that essentially they could've won if they just play defense. They gonna win yesterday. They just played offense. But Andrew bogut just gives that like, you know, booking. So good offense. You gotta give them basketball, Andrew bogut. Don't want the ball. We're gonna run bass. He's. He's a great passer, Andrew bogut. Does a lot of things we saw Andrew bogut and this warriors team worked together in the past. And it seems like they will have to moving forward..

"Now you and I had a little disagreement about this earlier. I just feel like when what does have to get in the conversation here for Kobe. Bryant had won six not five. Would he be better than LeBron? No, LeBron is the best player of his generation. Durant will never be LeBron ever done matter if he wins three more titles. He's never going to end. He was any time out Bill Russell's got eleven do we think he's better than MJ kennel be titles? No. But I mean at some point you're playing along like the Braun is going against him. You beat him institute wine. But it's not like, it's it's Tom Brady got sick. And Brett farve got one if LeBron got three and Kevin Durant now has to write let's say two more and he's got four to LeBron James wins one this year. Which assuming he will have the same three. Okay. But I and I would agree. Lebron is still so the best. Now, let's say he goes to New York and wins two more. Oh, God slow down. That is crazy talk. You got a winning duped finals, the Nick. Who? Even if he just went on some crazy streak and beat all records Rana. Nope. Lebron's better all stats influence impact more skills. Not as just more dominant to Durant better pure score. All right. But that's something. That's by the way. I have Durant. Second. It's not like I've got him as an old Oldsmobile. I've got him number two are gone. That's what he wants. He feels like if you're not I as he's still a Maserati, he's just no amber Gainey laws rotties Ervin's. I'm just Durant's got to get over this whole thing.
