"Got this, what's your side of the story? We could have addressed this in a way that respected doctor Ford's privacy, so it wouldn't necessarily even become public unless she wanted it to. So it's interesting because we talked about dianne Feinstein being elected in the year of the woman, which followed the infamous clarence Thomas Anita hill hearings. And in a lot of ways, you fast forward, and dianne Feinstein should be noted was the first woman who ever went on the Senate Judiciary Committee. I think a large part of response to the clarence Thomas needed hill hearing so fast forward. Here she is on the committee and we're going through again this sort of he said she said political drama, which really captivated the country in a way, again, very reminiscent of the Thomas hill hearings. And dianne Feinstein was right square in the middle of it. It was a constituent of hers, Christine blasey Ford, who talked about an alleged assault on her by Brett Kavanaugh when they were both in high school. Dianne Feinstein did not come forth with that information. It dribbled out. She was criticized for withholding that information. And then she was criticized for giving credence to the information by letting it come out. So she kind of got it coming and going both ways around the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. And then we fast forward to the Amy Coney Barrett hearing where in something that still has a lot of folks head scratching. She hugged Lindsey Graham, literally embraced him and said what a great set of hearings they were. And let's be clear to give that a little bit of context. It was like three weeks before the presidential election, you know, after the Republicans and Mitch McConnell had refused to give a hearing to Merrick Garland saying we need to wait for the presidential campaign, all of a sudden they were ready to rush through. In 2016, all of a sudden, 2020, they already had a rush this through. Feinstein sort of gives it the stamp of approval by hugging Lindsey Graham for a lot of people. That was not just the last straw. That was like the whole haystack. Yeah, that was 2020 and by then, I mean, she had one in 2018 her reelection for the U.S. Senate seat, but she didn't have at that point to endorsement of her own party. No, not surprisingly, she ran against Kevin de Leon and beat him rather handily, but you know, by 2020 and by the time of the Coney Barrett hearing, there had already been a lot of rumblings about dianne Feinstein about her mental cognition. And there were a lot of people who just sort of put whether it added up to four or not, they sort of put two and two together and said, wow, here she is hugging Lindsey Graham. I mean, she's just not all there. And it should be said, I mean, I don't know about you. I've personally dealt with people who dealt with cognitive loss and they have good days and they have bad days, and I think that's very much the case with senator Feinstein. You know, you fast forward to the Ketanji Brown hearings. She actually acquitted herself quite well during those hearings. Well enough that I did a column suggesting that, you know what? Just back off, let her finish, you know, maybe she's not all that she was, but good enough is good enough. But the point being a lot of folks, she seemingly has good days and bad days, and I guess the Lindsey Graham embrace was a very bad day. Were those arguments about her competence where they valid or was it sexism or ageism? Because I know you see this always. When you get these really older politicians, I'm remembering from the past Robert bird from West Virginia, Strom Thurmond, and they got some criticism, but for me it just seems there's a lot of swirling speculation about Feinstein that I never really saw with some of the men from the past. Yeah, I see what you're saying and I understand people who suggest that because you're right, people like bob bird, people like Strom Thurmond who are wielding the Senate chamber, and I think at the end they were actually picking up Strom Thurmond's hand and pushing on the button that he needed. So I get that point. And there isn't comparison to be made, you know, chuck grassley, the senator from Iowa is, I believe, something like two months and 12 days younger than dianne Feinstein. So essentially, he's the same age, was just reelected overwhelmingly in Iowa, didn't even have much of a contest. So sure, you could point to that and suggest that sexism at work. But I think voters are practical and I think people looked at chuck grassley, a guy who made a point about talking how he does calisthenics and runs four miles out of every morning or two or three mornings a week. There has never been the same kind of questioning. And not just questioning, but examples that people could see for themselves of a cognitive decline of a physical decline that we saw with dianne Feinstein. Didn't see that with chuck grassley. So sure, I understand why people might make that case given our history, but I think if you look at what voters had to go on, personally, I don't see sexism or ageism at work. So you could say that Feinstein's political careers ending with a whimper, not as a bang, how does that affect her legacy? Well, look, I'm not a cheerleader for Feinstein. I will say I've covered like I said for 30 plus years and I will tell you, we've had, we've had our ups, we had our downs. I've

"Legal issues. David, welcome to times. Good to talk to you again, Gustavo. Also with us today is Julia wick, a metro reporter who spent the past year covering everything Los Angeles city hall, and the city's mayoral election. Hello, Julia. Great to see you Gustavo. And finally is the only person at the times who talks faster than me, political columnist, Mark bear back. Mark, great to have you back on. Hey, colonel. Thank you all for being here today. It was a huge geopolitical year worldwide from the invasion of Ukraine to escalating tensions with China and the continued problems at the COVID-19 pandemic rotten us all. But for this episode, I want to focus on domestic affairs because 2022 some developments that's going to stay with us for years to come, David, let's start with you because with the Supreme Court, there were some fundamental things that happened. What was the big story on your beat this year? Well, it's pretty obvious I guess the abortion overturning roe versus wade. This has been a cause for the right for 50 years. They finally got a court that has 5 very solid conservatives. 6, 6 and a half, you include John Roberts, who their whole career is part of the conservative movement of overturning roe versus wade. I wrote a lot of stories about that for a lot of years, but I think most of the American public sort of thought, no, they're not going to overturn a right that has been understood for 50 years. The court never does something like that. Well, they did it. And that opinion was leaked in May. I think just I had a lot of friends I talked to, a lot of coworkers, people who were just sort of shocked. This is a very conservative court, and they're going to be with us for quite a while. 5 or ten years, at least with this current group of 6. So expect more of the same. You've covered the court for decades. Have you seen public opinion of the court so bifurcated, I guess? The way you're seeing it right now? No, if you mean bifurcated, that it's sort of Republican Democrat, liberal conservative. For a lot of years, the Supreme Court had a pretty good sort of standing with the public because every year there'd be a fair number of conservative decisions, but a few liberal decisions. It was only sort of a mix. Anthony Kennedy, Sandra O'Connor, where they sort of middle of the road moderate conservatives, and so with a court like that you'd get sort of a mix and I think a lot of people thought, well, I may not agree with all their decisions, but in general, this is a reasonable court. Now we've got a very conservative court that is very Republicans in polls are very fond of the courts. Democrats and middle of the rotors say, gee, this is a partisan political court, so there's a real divide in the public estimation of the court that I don't think I've ever seen in polls or public standing before. Sadly, anger division are now part of a regular part of politics, even the ultimate law of the land, but speaking of division Julia, Karen Bass took office this month as the first female mayor of Los Angeles and its second ever black mayor, LA's political campaigns are always going to get national attention, so that historic moment did, but this year was, well, kind of interesting in LA politically. What do you remember, Julia? It was absolutely a fascinating race. I think one of the things that was most interesting about the basque Caruso matchup is these are two candidates who weren't actually wildly different ideologically. You know, if you look at their policy platforms, it was really a matter of degrees and pretty small degrees, dividing them, but symbolically they couldn't have been more different. One was a black woman whose roots were as a community organizer in south LA, spent much of her life in public service and her opponent was a billionaire real estate developer who had built some of the most successful malls and well-known malls in the city. And so they really had these kind of contrasts of style and contrast about what they sort of stood for in the city. And I think ultimately it was an election that very much came down to partisanship. Both were Democrats, but Caruso had been a Republican for much of his life. He had switched his party registration a couple of times. And I think that was something that voters in LA, a city that is overwhelmingly democratic, really couldn't get over particularly coming so soon after the jobs decision. And then of course there was also the matter of a racist leak tape that just blew up the entire election and all the elections in LA county. And beyond even. Absolutely. I think that was the biggest city hall story in years. Maybe decades, we've really never seen anything like it before. And the repercussions are very much still kind of unfolding. Yeah, the fallout continues, council member Kevin de Leon, who was caught on that racist tape, ridiculing black political power, says he's not going to resign despite mounting pressure to do so from both the public and politicians, but Julia, why do you think the eyes of the United States were so focused on everything that happened in LA? It wasn't just a racist leak tape. You also had national and international attention to the LA sheriff's race and then especially the mayoral race with bass and Rick Caruso who ran against her. I mean, essay was super surreal right after the leak walking into a city council meeting and just the entire back of the room was national TV cameras. This was the first meeting after the leak where The New York Times actually ran a live blog during the LA city council meeting. It was just crazy. Not how it normally unfolds. I think a lot of reasons. I mean, LA is the nation's second largest city, you know, when California sneezes, the nation catches a cold, what happens here very often has national importance. But also in terms of the mayoral race, this was one of the most expensive mayoral races in American history. And I think also people were really looking to LA to see whether we were going to have an Eric Adams moment and maybe shift a bit more towards the center was a Law & Order candidate, which ultimately did not end up happening. Fast one by almost ten points. And not only that, there was a progressive wave with some of the younger city council members in LA. Yes, we saw a couple of new city council members elected. We saw a lot of anti incumbent energy. I think that was something that really unified across the city and to higher levels as well. But we wasn't unilaterally progressive. For instance, in one city council race in the coastal race in CD 11, Mike bonnan seat, Tracy park, who's a bit more conservative, still a Democrat, beat out her progressive opponent. So it wasn't kind of down the middle. Mark, the Republican Party was expected to have this huge red wave for the midterms, but that didn't happen. So what's going to be one of your more memorable political moments

"Earlier this week. And he's arguably the most powerful of all of these people. He runs like sort of one of the largest sort of umbrella groups of unions in the city. He is someone who has a huge amount of political power and a lot of that political power is born out of the money that the county fed will put to back outside groups who are supporting candidates. So we have seen them be huge backers of the mayoral candidate Karen Bass. And this support takes the shape in one money for ads, but also quite literally getting and coordinating carpenters or nurses to go out and knock on doors and much of that political organization and know how is stems from the unions in our city. Yeah, Herrera just resigned as president of the LA labor federation. And there's a lot of outrage and disgust. But what about the political fallout? What else is there? You mentioned nary resigning from being counseled president. But what else? I think even I was surprised how on Sunday three members of the city council called for her to step down. But by Monday and Tuesday, that number just started ballooning really quickly. And people started demanding everyone involved to step down. Not just nurri, but all three of the city council members and the labor leader. I've kind of lost track, frankly. The people we've heard from, you know, President Biden, senators, the mayor, support for these folks, is evaporating with each hour and it's a fast moving situation. The city is in a state of crisis as a result of this. Certainly our governing institutions are, people are in shock. These are all brash political figures, but I don't think people saw them necessarily as racist. And certainly did not expect to hear them talking about one of their colleagues as kids. And it's really causing a lot of soul searching, I think, among elected officials, staffers, activist organizations. I mean, there's a lot of it, but ultimately the conversation was all about how to strategize about how to draw on you counsel districts in Los Angeles. So what is the process for redistricting in LA and why is it such a contentious issue? Yeah, so last year redistricting commission was brought together. I believe it had 21 members and each council member got to appoint someone to this commission. And the goal of it was to create maps essentially that define council districts for the next decade. And a lot went into that sort of consideration. And a lot of questions of demographics of sort of what we think of as assets, important civic institutions, money makers for the city, job creators, things like stadiums, universities, tourist destinations, and the goal is to create places that are equitable and reflect the nature of the voting age population within the city. The conversation reflects an intense frustration with how that process was going last year. And what's interesting to me is that this conversation, yeah, it exposed how politicians try to secure and consolidate power, but it was Latino politicians complaining that black politicians have too much power in Los Angeles and that white politicians are helping them basically push down Latinos, but Latinos are now the majority in Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles. So what exactly were Martinez all four of them complaining about? I want to read you a quote from the transcripts. They're talking about strategizing about redistricting. I am hoping that you guys can all figure this redistribution out because I just need you elected. Yeah. I just need you. And then they're fucking with you. Kevin de Leon at one point goes. It's not us. It's not us. It's for Latino strength for the foreseeable future.

"Let's start out with racism. Racism. Teeth Democrats. God. You know, it's often interesting to me. That Democrats are the ones who are claiming that they support black and brown bodies. And all of the stuff y'all hear them say. But yet they are the biggest secret racist folks on Planet Earth. And let me give you a news flash. I want on a flash of news for you real quick. Pow, I want you to I want you to get the news. That white people's racism against black people. In my opinion, is less prevalent than Hispanic against black. See, people that never grew up in a black neighborhood, I didn't grow up in Hispanic neighborhood. You may not be aware of this. But Mexican people in black people don't get along like that. When I was growing up, there was certain words that people that I grew up around, black people would call Mexican people. And it has something to do with their back and it has something to do with water. And what happens if you put water on somebody's back? What does it leave you back? Okay, that's exactly what we used to call people when I was growing up. And the Mexican people stayed on their side, black people stayed on their side, and it was literally no love for the other side in the community. And so for people to just sit and think that black people and white people are the only ones with conflict, you're missing out. Why do you say this, mister Tatum? Because this Democrat, I think, is Martinez, she had to resign as the president of the Los Angeles city council, a day after she was caught on audio, a saying some racist stuff about a white man on the city council in his black son. Now let me just say this. You don't slip and say racist stuff, right? You don't slip and say somebody's kid look like a monkey. And that he's on the side of the blacks. He's with the blacks. That's what she said. He's with the blacks. This is not a misinterpretation of her true intentions, right? It's not like saying, oh man, look at the little monkey. He look like a little monkey and you're just saying he's cute and he's lovable. He's climbing over his mom and dad. Okay, he looks like a monkey. Only racist people believe black people are associated with monkeys. However, if somebody said that and they were misinterpreted, I could see that being a point. But she said that the kid looked like a monkey, F him, he's with the blacks, meaning that there's a conflict between them and us.

"I mean, to answer your question another way, you know, I'm not saying by disrespecting European norms. That I'm trying to privilege American norms. I'm not actually saying that this is a uniquely American thing. I just want to point that out, but also if Europe, as a culture, as an idea, is dying. And it seems to me that it is. Well, that which is falling should be pushed. Yeah, and I'm not really arguing against you. I'm more considering what the reactions would be, what the implications are. I mean, what inventor of any technology holds off because he's like, oh, I don't know what's going to happen. You know, technology happens. Change happens. And then a bunch of nerds get together and write the history books and say, well, this is why it happened, right? But in fact, the events just come. And I'm not trying to say that like, well, it's my prerogative to change history or whatever, but there's a certain necessity in a quality of the event and its repetition, which is now endless and there's nothing we can do to change it. Like I said, and inevitability anyway. So where are you at with ghost gunner? And explain goes kind of to people who are listening because that was a real game changer, right? Maybe. You know, ghost guns are a good example of this. So our enemy invents the term ghost guns. They're like, what's a good way to talk about homemade guns that scares people and help us get a handle on this? Kevin de Leon. Yeah, yeah, maybe it was workshopped in California by a guy like Kevin de Leon and then we were like, you know what, ghost guns? That's great. Wow, that's really good. So it's like we agree and amplify, right? We take the symbolic content of that. And then we try to actually create the world where there is such a thing as a ghost gun. And kind of even thinking that the politicians themselves don't quite believe in it yet. And so we created ghost gun kits and files and these things and then a machine called the ghost gunner. It's like we made it a verb or something. So that's kind of like that symbolic dimension I was talking about earlier, but it's important that the machine actually do the thing and give you the ghost gun part. So for let's say 6 or 7 years, we've done different generations of this machine, which are in essence, like fit in the footprints of 3D printers. And unlike 3D printers, they don't make the parts out of plastic. They drill, mill, fashion things from raw pieces of metal. It turns out it's easy to make gun parts out of metal. Can you make the whole gun from depends on what you mean? In general, that's not what our machines are bought for. They're made for finishing parts that are kind of already almost finished. But most recently, like in January, we revealed a new type of receiver. That can be made completely from a raw piece of metal. That's just the receiver. It's not the entire gun. What is the receiver part? In U.S. gun culture, gun politics, at least federally, just the receivers of guns are treated as guns by the law. So all the other parts, unlike Europe, again, unlike Europe, all the other parts are just treated as so many components that are unregulated. The receiver is the serialized part. Okay. So the one part in commerce and the law that's kind of tracked and when the police are like, well, we can see where this gun went..
