"His. ABC chatty people. Ask you a lot. If friends is going to come reboot or yeah especially since you you then I was like well. Why can't you I? Yeah because you know but I think also the truth is Marta has said it public. Marta Kauffman and and David Crane wrote the Creator. You know the they created it Along with Kevin Bright but you she said publicly like it's just not ever going to happen and so did David Crane and he had a really smart thing. I saw him on a panel and someone else on the panel just said selfishly though I mean well no he said it he. It would never come back because the way ended. You don't really want to unravel all that do you. I mean Ross and Rachel got together. Monica and Chandler are together together. You don't really want to unravel all that do you and And so someone asked like our Google. Are they still together and he said well. Yeah because we're not redoing. You know something like that. Well they threw out the the a seri- the original series finale will and grace. Yeah they'd through that it was like a Karen Dream Right. Yes races on Hong screw easy easy decision it. That's good oh my God yeah yeah they you just threw it all out but right it was a dream. It was Cairns or drunken stupor. And it wasn't Karen Stream. It was an actual flash rush forward to twenty years and twenty years in the future and No I meant justifying the reboot. Oh right yes yes. That's right the more about it than idea. That's good. Well I watched it. Yeah maybe you didn't know but it's true I mean every episode way Conrad cast members are generally the worst possible people to answer trivia questions. The I'm the worst. I was still back in the two thousand six when you said that. So yeah no right. That was a fantastic ending to will and grace hadn't really spoken and then their kids are across across the hall from Each Other in College. I just couldn't remember will and grace have been across the hall from Each Other in college is Kind of sad one shows and you know I remember all the does endings of all of the sitcoms really but how about do we get back like the last. Oh Yeah we have. We had a hard time. Yeah back then getting through especially this one scene with The Characters Kernan Jack to get through. Oh you did. That Song Sang forgettable. forgettable phenomenally yet sued. Yeah I don't know that is freeze dried me tell you know. I don't WanNa take her to the vet because they'll find something Talk about parks and wrecks and when you when it ended I mean it was. Everyone was everyone in tears absolutely. Yeah it was You know no it was single cam shot like a movie as opposed to the Multi Cam in front of a live audience which was friends and will and grace and so it wasn't necessarily in the last scene that you shot but you had to like go from day to day like this is red is last seen series. This is seen Scott and so. That's worse I yeah. Yeah and for perhaps The because of the multi Single camps style. There's more of a whole group is together the whole time at you guys sort of rehearse. Your shows like a thirty minute play every week right. And so the crew comes and goes until. Finally everybody culminates on tape night to shoot the show and we have a curtain call. Basically when you're down with the shy yeah you don't have that works like movie so twelve hour days five days a week. You know everybody's there together So yeah it was. I mean it was so delicate. The show was made with so much love. It's such a rare treat in in the TV business to have like a seven season Ron of show. That's not full of some sort of greed or fear her like the business bleeding into it and so everybody of course is incredibly grateful to have this job and and for me. I mean it was my big break like it was the first thing that put me on the math and so all of those feelings combined made me a simpering mess for few weeks. Yeah well sober way just racks Nora. I think we did eighteen episodes and we did a little circle before go way out there. the six of US and Jennifer was Iraq every circle. Yeah we're like oh we'll we're not there yet. I mean we've got eighteen is a mess sir. I start now and yeah. That was an impossible night. Yeah what was that like for you when it's weird eared getting well-known like especially. I was almost forty when will and grace started and nobody knew who was obviously and then will and grace started and it was quite an adjustment. yeah when it first started. I kept like if if I was arrest. If we were out it will. I guess I didn't. Yeah no I didn't know natural before the before the third season but if I went to a restaurant and people were looking at me I really thought it was because something thing was wrong. Yeah hanging out or yeah. It's like what is going on like why muscle what's wrong but the success. That's a friend's completely different. From the success of will and grace like what what is that. It's still it's ongoing. I mean how do you is it a thing hang or are you just used to it now or yum used to it. I don't know you just have to make peace with disappointing a lot of people. Because you're never going. Yeah I mean you run into people and you know if they want a meaningful exchange. It's not gonNA happen if they you know what I mean like. Whatever their expectations of the encounter? It's GONNA be disappointing so and then I don't take pictures general. You never do Sophie's no I don't because yeah I you You know it's to me. It's not fair because I did use to like sure I'll sign. Yeah Okay and then you realize especially so you know with my son or out with family. Everyone has to stop the conversation. Yeah what you're doing. It's now I'm interfering and with the evening Everybody you know that I love and care about now..

"As central characters you know they weren't really the central focus Kevin bright along with masa Kauffman and David crane created the US comedy series friends where young people well the central focus it was about the life of twenty somethings Ross Monica Rachel Phoebe Chandler and Joey but the pilot episode shown to selected audiences in LA didn't suggest the hit the show was to become you go to focus group test things where you watch people watch your show when they have these little dials that they twist when they like it and because the other way when they don't and I would say eight friends did not test off the charts at all and was it always friends was always going to be friends well you know there was a little journey in the title we bounced around we actually shot we shot the pilot the name of the show was six of one everybody just kept going half dozen of the other and that wasn't really the effect we wanted so the the title changed to friends like us somebody that wanted to just call it France and that's when it became the only act to you had in mind when you write the carts as was David Shrum as as Ross is that right that's correct David had addition for us on another show it was a pilot never got on the air and while he didn't get that part he never went out of our heads he was just so unique he was you know dark handsome brooding moody and his voice to St Martin David's head so when they started writing the script Ross was going to be David Schwimmer he didn't know it yet but Ross was going to be David Schwimmer and what about the rest I mean how did they will fall into place because as you say you the chemistry was there in the beginning but I'm full the process to get it back must've taken awhile well the rest was a far more difficult process some mark Kaufman and I did most of the casting we saw hundreds of actors for each part which is why. isn't coming to life it wasn't funny the way we had heard it in our heads and and then Lisa Kudrow came in and read Phoebe and all the sudden the lights went back on again she she brought Phoebe the life and brought so many levels to it that we hadn't even imagine then we kind of hit the wall again and we saw Jennifer and we saw Matthew Perry but the problem with both of them was they were already signed to other shows and if those shows have gotten picked up we would have lost them so we took a huge risk and put them in the pilot knowing that we could lose them but it worked out in our favor and then finally Courtney Matt was something that came down to the network and how crucial do you think the costing bulls TV the ultimate success of the series. so much of what the characters became came out of those actors things that weren't necessarily originally imagined in the writing Matthew Perry's over enunciation on certain words became part of Chandler the actors really took the characters to a place that I think put them in the hearts of by the audience although all three are labeled as creators of the show they had very different roles they wrote the script and that was sort of my job to realize the show visually what was it going to look like what was it coming to pace like and in that respect I I really had my mind a different looking said calm than we had previously seen and I think you see that and friends especially in Monica's apartment sitcoms intended to be designed with neutral walls in the background because they felt that skin tones of the actors pop better against those but I was always frustrated by those strappy looks because you know it's called color television for a reason so we put very bold teal in purple on the walls and Monica's apartment which was a shock to some executives when they first saw it but once it got going it became a trademark of the show they got the cost and the look of the show but it took awhile before they realized they had a hit on their hands they get part of it actually came the summer after the first season during the summer and the re runs people found us that hadn't found this before and so we became the number one show on television that summer and I guess the second departure from knowing that was when I theme song started being played on the radio it started with the DJ in buffalo who just edited our song off the television set so to put it in a loop and people started requesting it in that demanded a longer version of the song and we went back in the recording studio with the Rembrandts and Martin David wrote more lyrics and song was a hit on the radio. the show six relatively unknown.

You're you always have so much going on in between visits like this new project that you're working on it sounds like you're doing nothing. But hanging out with legends. It's, it's really special that wasn't planning to promote it. But it's a fascinating talk about it because of who the people are Kevin. Bright producer friends said, would you like to direct his talk? You mentally. And, and he's, he's really good friend and about Martin mall, who is one of the funniest people on one of the first people I ever saw when I was seventeen perform at the main point in Philadelphia and he would go around and a lot of people out of your I was gonna say, by millennials. I'm just trying to cover everybody. But he I mean, I want to cover people. I brought some Gallagher. Shami's. Some of those never mind, my not to work right now. But I couldn't believe what I'd seen because those card called Martin mull and his furniture. And he would bring his own furniture or rented from a cheap place. Yeah. A truck and go on the road and play places like the main point which is like a four hundred three hundred cedar and Jackson Browne would played at the time. Bruce used to play it back that hell's going on. It was insane. And then you realize it didn't need to bring the furniture could rent it. And. But his comedy songs I always says, fifteen. Yeah. Did it wasn't really parodies. It was just original weird songs, and I want some radio contests, seventeen and I watched him and I was like, don't even bother to try and just Brian then firm tonight, a lot of might not. But it is the best Senate isn't politically, correct. But that was the meaning of it that way, Martin mon-, Norman Lear produced Martin has continued. I mean he didn't all those appearances on arrested development was on an sorry. He was a life in pieces. He's on veep. I mean, the guy is still out there getting, great work doing. Great work. Exactly. Does series at Caceres as last was cool kids, we were on the side of that? I'm going to talk to David Alan Grier and a couple of days. But my interview and hang out, I hadn't met many times before Steve Martin because I stock them and and and Martin short wants to do it, but we're we're playing with his ego. No, that's. Now, we'd be honored to have him. So I'm after him. About guys like Steve Martin and Martin mall. I mean, there are such a generation that I mean you know, we hope they're around for a long time. But, you know, I think about all the people we've interviewed on this show, the years we've been doing it in that are gone like Milton Berle. And Bob Hope and people like that. I mean, our generations that just disappear in front of your eyes because that's how that's how h works, well as interesting, I'll go into a show somewhere and I'll get real casual and get, you know, just talked to the people in the room and Jose, and Johnny Carson. One of the times, I was on there and they don't know who Johnny Carson is. And then you go, they only know from the commercials of by the whole set, right. But it's really interesting. I had actually done a worm up because I was warm up comic on bosom buddies with Tom Hanks, and Peter Scolari, how right. Yeah. And, and I did the warm up for domestic life, which was a Martin mall series at Steve Martin exact produce because they were always good friends and Steve wanted to make a good show and Martin came up with it, and the other great producers, and I did the warm up and then Steve Martin grabbed a Mike. So. I'm twenty four years old, and I'm holding microphone Steve Martin's holding the other one and we're going back and forth, you were going back and forth. And it was me that was one of my big Richard Pryor movie around the same time. So that was those that have gotten out of comedy. Then. Followed by career. I have. But, but Steve Martin was so funny. He was saying to the audience, like how because he's done everything he worked, you know, with the banjo and balloons. And he, he said, ladies and gentlemen. These are called cameras. This is. And then I wanted to do something in his vein to try to make them laugh. And I said, you see this jacket Steve, he goes, yes. That's, that's very nice jacket. I said, ten thousand dollars. He laughed. Because he's to me, you know, I I watched the jerk recently and they'll great it's still holds up and there's a great of the new phone books are here. I mean, come on. Anybody hasn't seen it? They should because it's it's it is a great racial statement. And because he was raised by a poor black family and their family. And it was meant to be actually talked coming job as much as. Norman Lear says house for dinner with you're gonna be okay. He is. I'm he's my friend friend. With him, but he thinks he's looking to be my friend. Deluded. He's wrong. Rain with a pill. Me ecstasy. Lobster. Georgio anyway. Ninety six years old he is. And he is literally a genius and is very clear. Concord records is just one of the most prominent independent record companies because they own all the labels Ray, Charles effects, odd. And besides that their thriving Santo but. Music. But what happened was we were talking about how the jerk holds up and he's.

And they you know, they do QNA's with them. And I am actually doing a run up to the election. It's interesting that Bruce Rauner is going to be here today along with his wife coming in in the six o'clock hour, and then right after that I'm going to be sitting down with three journalists. We're gonna be talking about the future of of political news coverage in what's happening in this particular election, those two things what a great topic now, it'd be more timely. There's there's gonna be a camera stream of it as well. And the the the the walk out to our little kitchen at area right outside the thing. And there's a a liquor delivery guy arriving what? It totally is, but they literally Binny's just delivered like enough liquor for like four hundred people. Well, we will definitely attend event. Then thanks for inviting us. I have no idea that this was this is what it is. It's like a party. Audience. Yeah. Well, there you go. The audience. Apparently, apparently, they apparently you can't handle me sober. I think is the is the point of this Steve Cochran. All right. So it's gonna be something interesting. And I don't know where I didn't know much about this other than Pat Brady whose Pepperdine Eric Edelstein run this to political political operatives from either side of the aisle, and they and they they're like, hey, will you do this is it? Sure. And never heard another word about it until like this morning. Do you? Remember was hey, you know, what we're doing tonight at seven o'clock after your show as what you know. I don't think the liquor is to get the listeners. I think it's to get you to make sure you show. Well, we have some we have some liquor itself. Or sweeping your neighbors sidewalk or helping somebody with groceries there's so many so many things that we can, do on, a daily basis to express kindness in the you know John over, the, over the five years that we've been doing this we we schedule a quarterly kind of celebration watch a. Quarter and we've been doing that. For five years now sometimes we'll have one hundred people. Sometimes we'll have five hundred, people sign up it it it varies from Puerta quarter but those single greatest unsolicited testimonial that. We perceive over the five years.
