So that Trump can press for money for what Warren called quote, a monument to hate and division along our southern border a reference to the president's push for a border wall with Mexico. Meantime, Congress's returning to Washington this afternoon after the long holiday weekend. CBS's Steven Portnoy joins me now. And even though congress Stephen is going back into session. Are we expecting any kind of movement on the shutdown getting us past it? Today is for Senate leader Mitch McConnell to introduce thirteen hundred page Bill that composes the proposal the president announced on Saturday that would fully fund the government agencies that have been shuttered more than a month and extend protections for Dhaka recipients and the TPS population those people here from a select number of disaster-stricken countries. What's not clear is how soon this measure might come up for a vote in the Senate vote that would be destined to fail because Democrats say that they find these proposals a non-starter we're told the timing is fluid, and that is an indication that it's it's not clear whether Democrats will allow for vote as soon as today that would require unanimous consent in the Senate or whether it might be delayed until Thursday. But the bottom line is whether it's today, or it's Thursday, Democrats are expected to block this measure, and that will leave us where we were before except the Democrats will eventually be on the record putting their votes to it in opposition to it is from either side there any kind of I guess. Pressing issue to get this done. We've got another day for some of these workers who aren't getting paychecks. So it is hitting closer to home again every single day. We're hearing more about the direct pain applied and felt by the families of federal workers who are not getting paid. And you know, by the end of this week. A whole new round of zero dollar pay stubs will go out to people who work for the affected agencies. I colleague passed word to me the other day about how you know, everyone from FBI agents to TSA workers and other people who have been paying into a supplemental vision and dental plan are getting direct bills now to continue that insurance coverage, and if they haven't been paid they've got to pay these premiums essentially out of pocket just to continue having coverage for their families to to to go to the dentist and and get an eye doctor's appointment, so all of these are direct serious impacts on people. But is that changing the political dynamic here in Washington? No because everyone understands what a sad circumstance it is. And yet there's still no agreement. The president tweeted this morning that he will not cave on the issue of the wall. And Democrats aren't particularly interested in giving the president what he wants on the wall. And that's where we are. It's been. All right, real quick one. Here. It is a week before the scheduled state of the union. Do we know for sure yet whether this will go on or not? We don't know we'll have to see. But the fact that the state of the union is a week away. The the secretary the speaker of the house has suggested very strongly that President Trump reschedule the speech until after the shutdown ends is what lingers over all of this and. Is it possible that an agreement could be reached between now and January twenty ninth? Yes. Is it likely at this point? There's a reason to believe that it is. All right.
