"Ugh. Yeah, look, I am most concerned about this whole Aaron judge thing. I mean, you know, there was a little bit of a news cycle around this just this week about whether or not he is already been signed to an extension because he might be a free agent after this season. So what exactly is happening with Aaron judge, Jeff, and right field? What's happening is the Yankees have a truly difficult decision to make. Because you've got competing dynamics here. Dynamic number one is quite simple. Aaron judge is the best homegrown player the New York Yankees have produced in a very, very long time. He is somebody who hits for power. He is somebody who when he's healthy, is incredibly talented and productive. He's somebody who represents the pinstripes well. And I think fans love him for what he can be when he's out there on the field. The competing dynamic there is that in multiple years, Aaron judge has not been on the field. He had 50 games missed in 2018. He missed 60 games in 2019. He missed half the games of the COVID short in 2020 season. While he played a 148 last year and almost hit 40 home runs and had an OPS over 900, he also turns 30. At the end of April. And when you turn 30 in sports, the perspective and opinion of you changes. Aaron judge reasonably rightfully understandably wants to get paid goo gobs of money because some team out there on the open market is going to look at him, say 30 shmurda, and give him whatever he wants. The Yankees, they tend not to do that. The reality is Yankees fans think of this organization like they should, which is you guys make more money than any baseball team in existence. And it's one thing if you don't get Corey Seeger, or Marcus Simeon, or Carlos Correa, or any free agent this off season who costs, say, over a $32 million because that's what they gave Anthony Rizzo and it was the most money they spent on anyone this morning. Okay, we'll give you that. But if you're not paying Aaron judge, what are we doing here? No, Jeff, I mean, we have a literal open air museum located in our outfield that we unironically call monument park. We're not grading on a curve here. We want Aaron judge. We want the guy who we can say, all rise to and then stand up and feel like we're in on something good. Okay, so let me turn this on you though. You want the Aaron judge who at 29 hit 39 home runs? Are you going to want Aaron judge when he's 34? And better yet, the question is, I think, does that matter? Or because they're the Yankees. Should we hold them to a different standard than other organizations? Should we look at them and say, because your revenues are so high, you should go out and do frivolous things. Because remember Pablo toward the end of George Steinbrenner's life, he did some frivolous things. No, Jeff, what I resent here is that the coin tax was not already claimed as the Yankees. It is offensive. That's a big mess. The Steinbrenner tax. That's exactly right. Yes, I'm offended that our billionaire is poorer than their billionaire. Yeah, I get that. That is a very, very New York problem to have. But another New York problem, by the way, that I have to think about is that the Blue Jays are just good though. That's the reality I live in Jeff. It wasn't the way that I grew up. Pablo, they're not good. They are really good. And I'll tell you, you look up and down that lineup. And you go position by position and compare them to the New York Yankees. First base, Vladimir Guerrero junior or Anthony Rizzo. You're taking vladi. Second things. DJ le mayhew probably DJ le mayhew over Kevin biggio. Shortstop. Bo Bichette over kinder falafel. Third base Matt Chapman over Josh Donaldson, not big, but you know, probably probably beats him out. Center field George Springer over air and hicks, right field. I understand Aaron judge is really, really good. So stay Oscar Hernandez. And the amount of excellent players that the Blue Jays have goes beyond, but the Blue Jays also have something Pablo that no other team in baseball does. And I'm not sure if you realize this, but baseball's kind of unvaccinated. Like I think the vaccination rate among baseball players is probably higher than the national percentage. I don't know if it's by a whole lot though. And if you are going into Canada, typically under the current rules of the great country up north, you have to quarantine if you are unvaccinated while going into that country and Major League Baseball came up with a rule that essentially said, we're just going to pass by this idea that you have to quarantine. If you're not vaccinated, you're not allowed in. And I say all of this, while acknowledging that the Toronto Blue Jays in the past two years played a significant number of home games in Buffalo, New York and the need in Florida. So the Blue Jays have been disadvantaged plenty throughout this. But it would be foolish to not acknowledge that they're going to be some really, really good players, perhaps Aaron judge, who has not talked about his vaccination status publicly among them who will not be traveling to play the Toronto Blue Jays this year. Well, let's get to the team that is coming out of the AL for you, Jeff, because I know you have the Dodgers in the World Series, who is meeting them at the end of the road here. So the Chicago White Sox.

"kevin biggio" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"Cody Bellinger, AJ Pollock, the only one of those players who has not been an all star is Will Smith, and he is probably the best catcher in the league. So I imagine he's going to get his shot this year. I would think so. So there's no hole here. Gavin Lux, who's blocked again for now after looking like he might have a shot at playing time, but man, I mean, I don't want to get too cut up in the superlatives, but I was writing about this. I was like, do you have a shot at being the first thousand run offense of this century? And probably not. Almost certainly not just because it's a neutral park and it's not that extreme a run squaring environment. And it's in lineup that's getting on in years and most of these guys are well over 30 and some of them will probably break down at some point and you're counting on max muncy to make a full recovery from his elbow injury and you're hoping that Cody Bellinger will have a big rebound and that his hot hitting in the World Series will continue into the season. So there's some question marks there I guess, but Dodgers level question marks for any other team. I mean, this is just so, so stacked. And yeah, I mean, between this and Fernando Tatís Jr.'s absence. This has been a week that has boosted the Dodgers playoff ads even higher. I guess you could say that they're starting rotation, their staff is maybe looking a little lighter in some respects than it has been in some previous years. And of course, both in that area and payroll, why is there is still some uncertainty somehow about the status of Trevor Bauer and whether he will be suspended and for how long as things stand, they are just slightly submit in projected payroll over 270 million. So yeah, this is what the Dodgers can do. They can develop a Will Smith and they can find and fix a max Muncie or Justin Turner, but they can also just, you know, trade prospects and then sign Mookie bets to it, big deal, and they can go out and get Freddie Freeman, so they pick their spots and they spend a ton of money and that lineup is going to be a lot of fun to watch. Yeah, it's just going to be really, really excellent. So that's fun. And I like that and I don't know if they would articulate it in quite these terms because obviously, like the trajectory, potential trajectory of the Padres looks different now than it did even a week ago with the news that tatis is going to need surgery or has had surgery at this point. He's either had it or he's going to for sure now. So that has changed since the last time we recorded, but the trajectory of the Padres is a little different than it was, the giant still seemed committed to winning and this seems like the second off season in a row where the Dodgers have been faced with the option of feeling confident or shoring up an already excellent club in the face of real competition potentially in division. And they've risen to that again, right? And that's exciting that that continues to be a priority for them. And to be able to do it in a way that feels a lot less icky than some of their options last off season saw the better, Ben. That's just all the better. And the way they've gone about this maybe provides an interesting contrast to how the Yankees have operated which we could talk about in a second I will segue into the AL east via another ridiculous lineup. And that is the Toronto blue Chase who added Matt Chapman to an already strong position player course. So I don't know if it quite compares to the Dodgers, but boy, it's not far. You've got George Springer, Bo Bichette, black girl junior, the Oscar Fernández, Lourdes curio junior, Matt Chapman, Randall critch, Kevin biggio, Danny Jansen. That is quite a collection of talent as well with maybe an even stronger rotation at this point or just as strong, so this team is also stacked and I don't know how you can look at this roster and not see the Blue Jays as the favorite in the AL east and it's going to be competitive as usual as it was last year. They did not win the division or even make the playoffs last year, but they were, if not the best team, probably at least the second best and they just didn't make it in. And they had that weird mismatch between their record and their rent differential, I would not count on that continuing into the season. Matt Chapman may not quite be the player he was prior to his hip surgery, but he's still seemingly very good defensively and even last year when he was roughly a leak average hitter, not what he had been before, you know, it seems like his power was sapped a bit and I don't know whether some of that comes back or not, but he does strike out a lot these days and he is not a high average hitter. He does walk so he can still help you offensively, but the glove is still good and he is still only 28 and you know they had to pay a price for him and you did a little state of the a's farm system last time we talked. So we don't have to go in depth on that this time, but they did shore that up even further there. They traded, I guess, the headliner was Gunnar houghland, right? Toronto's top pick last year and then they also added in Fielder Kevin Smith who maybe is an immediate replacement for Chapman and then a couple of pitchers, Zach Logan, Kirby snead. So this fits in with the a's pattern we talked about last time where it seems like they are targeting players who are well into their 20s already, like major league ready guys who can step in now or sometimes soon and maybe lead to a shorter rebuild than you would expect. So it's tough, obviously for ace fans now that both of the mets have gone as well as Chris Bassett and maybe minaya and montas and who knows who else will follow them sometimes soon, but at least they're getting guys back where you can imagine them getting good again sometimes soon. But in the meantime, you can also just sort of salivate over the put chase rest there because it is pretty special too. Yeah, we talked about the Dodgers odds. I mean, the Blue Jays for us now lead the American League in their combined playoff odds. They lead the east in terms of their division chances. They do not have the highest odds of winning their division within the American League because the east is pretty stacked, but their positions to lynch by and they have the highest.

"I don't know what my second thing was. Oh, I think that maybe what we should take away from this consideration of fandom is that we should just invite each other to when the thing stops making us happy, release ourselves from it. Maybe what we should learn from the people who come to fandom later in life, whatever it is, is that we all have the power within us to say that no longer serves a purpose for me. That doesn't make me happy the nostalgia doesn't outweigh the grind of my team never being in the playoffs. There are things that these teams do rather than not as civic institutions, but like as companies that I don't like whatever it is. Maybe the thing we should take from it is that it's fine to choose other stuff because maybe there's stuff out there you like more or maybe you have that one year you look back on it and you're like, I was really into Formula One. That was your weird and then you move on to I don't know. Beanie babies. Sure. Cogs remember pogs Ben? Oh, I do very well. Oh man. We're old. People don't know pogs anymore. You talk to a zoomer. They're like, I don't know what that fog business is. It's ad how pogs are always like the go to reference. It's like to identify yourself as a member of an age group or out of touch or that someone else is out of touch with you. It's you start talking about slammers and people either know or they don't and it's a very in group kind of thing. Or they really don't. And then I say, but you and I are wearing the same clothes that I wore in middle school, so who's who's the loser now? I don't know. My hair just doesn't part in the middle. It just doesn't. It goes on the side. It's not a purposeful choice that's just where my hair goes. I don't know. Anyway, contemplating zoomers a lot lately thinking about the zoomers. Yes. All right, well, that was tangentially related to baseball. Which is about the best we can hope for these days. And if you have a story of how you discovered baseball, late in life, and you have not already had it with us. Yeah, that would be interesting. There's no need to be tribal about these things. It's absolutely not. It's silly when you are born into one fan base of a certain sport. And then that prevents you from enjoying the pleasures of every other fan base and all the other good players that they have and makes you inclined to hate them or to hope that they don't do well. And so why would anyone feel the same way about a single sport? It doesn't make sense. I want people to like baseball, obviously, but it's not a zero sum game. Right. It's becoming a game where there are more and more and more entertainment options. And so I suppose as someone who does a baseball podcast, then you as someone who runs a baseball site that everyone who flocks to the formula, one banner is a potential fan graphs reader who will be reading about F one instead. Maybe there should be fan graphs Formula One, maybe that's something to think about. But yeah. We can like multiple things. Just don't try to get me to like wrestling. Like I'm not sorry. It's okay. The TV show heals, which is yes, I've heard that that is wonderful. See, like that, I can, 'cause then it's about, well, I guess wrestling is about a pretend story too, isn't it? Well, it depends on what kind of fan you are. All right. Here is an email from a Patreon. Oh yeah, we're gonna do an email show and then we talked about fans for 20 minutes and don't eat dolphins still a good takeaway. Yeah, this is not a question, but it is an email that is kind of related to what we were just talking about. This is from Jeff a Patreon supporter who says a question in the discordantly wild forum that's the Discord group for Patreon supporters about what it's like for me watching MLP games from Hong Kong reminded me of something I've been meaning to write to you about. I think it was Meg who commented at some point this season about time shifted baseball being a terrible idea. I chuckled as for many years now, I only watch MLB TV archived games, living in Hong Kong, if I wanted to watch live baseball, it would have to be in the morning and watching baseball first thing in the morning just doesn't feel right. So like a normal fin, I watch games in the afternoons for the most part. Now here's where things get funky. I generally only watch Jay's games a lot of Jay's games, but invariably I fall behind, so it's not unusual for me to watch games that are several days old, then at some point I thought why am I sitting through losses? Sure, not all losses are bad games, just as not all wins are fun games, but odds are that overall I'm going to better enjoy the games where my team comes out on top. Now here's where things get funkier. To manage this feat of time shifted baseball while allowing me spoiler free watching other than knowing it ends well. I tend to avoid the baseball Internet other than this podcast, my main interaction with my team and baseball is through my home team's TV broadcast, and since I'm only watching wins, my Jays fandom exists in this distorted halcyon Truman show like bubble. Take the J's 2021 season, some great starting pitching, check. I saw a lot of tight painted Robbie race arts, monster offense, check, I saw a lot of offensive clobbering by the Jays and so before their big late season run, I think why doesn't the team have a better record? A win total more in line with their huge positive run differential. I'd hear talk of their bullpen woes and scratch my head as my experience of the bullpen has been good. Then I realized all those losses I'm not watching is where things likely went south in the late innings. That's my time shifted baseball experience. No questions for you. Just thought you might be interested in this peculiar baseball consumption with a window into a parallel universe where one's team never loses. In these dark days of the lockout, if you're looking for things to talk about, yes, we are. I would be curious if you have any philosophical musings and banter about the pros and cons of this approach. I'm just trying to imagine what it would feel like to sorry, I want to make sure I understand. He picked games he knew that they had won. Yes, he knows the outcome, but not the specifics about how it happens. Now, the specifics. So I wonder what your experience? The Blue Jays were fun team. They had a guy on their team who probably would have been the MVP if it were not for show of tani. I wonder how tawny pulled in Toronto. The only did look at the U.S., didn't we? Anyhow. So you had Vlad and you had both shut and you had Kevin biggio and you had Marcus Simeon and having this incredible season and you had Robbie ray and his Tito pants and he had other things besides and so like that was a good fun team..
