'Long Gone Summer' Documentary Revisits Controversial 1998 Home Run Chase
"Are joined by the director of long gone. Summer AJ SCHMUCK AJ. Congratulations loved watching that film. What does it feel like to have the film finally be seen by the world. I mean it's crazy. It's a been a long journey to get to this point, and it feels like a total miracle to have finished. With the pandemic and working separately with all my team so finally being able to get the film done and get it's ESPN. Feels like a huge accomplishment. Why did you decide to start the dock with the actual baseball's that mark mcgwire hit. Well is in part because we. When we met Todd McFarlane The Great Comic Book Artist Entrepreneur Who who bought all the balls or a bunch of balls including at number seventy. I just love the way he talked about the home run, and how it is something that really connects baseball fans to the game in a way that you don't get in any other sports so as soon as we like walked out of of interviewing him, I I turned to my producer, and said you know that's the beginning of the film. Is Him talking about what the home run in baseball means and how it connects fans, drinks have direct contact between Maguire's bat, and and the person who catches it. So that was that was great also has sort of the other. Bonus. Positive thing of reminding you that someone paid more than three million dollars. Baseball that's how big this was That's how much this took over the country that someone would would go to that extent. To own that ball. Having when watching that scene in Rhode. explained. HOW MICHAEL JORDAN HITS! A shot wins the championship. They go and bring him the basketball, and if if a quarterback breaks a record with the past, bring him the football, but with the home run. You literally hit into the stands, and you never see it again and it was sort of a way that the fan can take home a piece of the game in baseball. They can't other any other way. Way that happens with the home run, but then you did you hear him sort of articulate this, and then the question is asked how much you pay for it. It was just so much money that I wanted to know. How does this? How much are they paying people that bitter comic book illustrators, nowadays like what is the going rate for commentator Peter? How can this man afford this multimillion dollar baseball? Spun was very successful, but yeah I think. He spent basically every penny he owned and you know I I think in part. He did it because he he wanted to get into the business of making action figures for for sports. And and that happens I, mean he basically that was his way of getting everyone's attention in saying. Hey, I'm serious I. Care About Sports Let me make action figures, and and he did I think it was not only something that he wanted to do one thing that didn't make the film which I I tried to find a way to put it in, but he talked about how. His brothers are all baseball fans, one of the key excitement for him in getting the balls with just to be able to say I've got the baseball. As like well. You got three million dollars for that God. Bless Ya. I know that's right. The kid sweet swinging lefty King Griffey Junior, one of my favorite players growing up as Wa. Carry a bet to this day. was more of a factor. With Sosa mcgwire that people actually a realize. Can you acknowledge how his performance affected them? Certainly I mean one of the crazy things I think about that. Season was that people really went into it from spring training, thinking that either Maguire or junior were gonNA. Make this record. Both of them at hit and high fifties the year before this was an expansion year. Everyone just thought like this is GonNa happen went into the season, thinking that Griffey was was in it. You know right I think if you even remember the Griffey was in it. You forget that he was in it until late August when he had kind of a long slump I think he only hit one one home run and like twenty games and may still hits. Hyphen! which is a tremendous season that gets overlooked by what happened with mcgwire and Sosa, but certainly yeah I mean congruency. Junior had an amazing year that year and. It was in a in addition to to all the stuff. We remember of Sosa and mcgwire. He was. He was hitting the ball longer. In Maguire was sort of famously one of the bash brothers, and he had a great career while he was in Oakland with the athletes and Sammy Sosa wasn't as celebrated as a baseball player, and he said something in the film that really hit accord me, said quote ahead had to continue hitting. Because if not, they're not going to mention me. Why did you include that emphasized that and what that means you from Sami? I thought it was great. It Sammy acknowledged that he wanted to the respect. He thought he deserved, and he does that a few times I think in the film and I mean that's sort of a lighthearted way of like saying like. I turned on sports center at night and if I don't hit a home run like they're not gonNA mentioned. He wanted to be mentioned. He wanted to be acknowledged and I think that one of the things I hope that the film does Sami. Wasn't that well known outside of Chicago before ninety eight, but. That's in part because the comes weren't very good, but the Sammy was was a great player for the cubs. A thirty thirty guy I thirty thirty guy ever in cubs history. He was a top home run hitter in the National League for years. I was one year where he was on track to get close to the record. But was injured in in August so You know was a goal to sort of illuminate. The fact that Sami wasn't just somebody who like. Jumped out of nowhere in June of Nineteen Ninety eight that he meant something in Chicago before that. Implant in Chicago, the weather can be a factor. Do you believe it play as much of a factor as Sammy Sosa states. I mean all I can tell you that. We were there in May of last year to shoot the Saint Louis Chicago series in their. Earliest! May and it's snowed one morning. And I was just like. I grew up in southern Illinois outside the St, Louis and I love Chicago. Chicago is great, but I was just like hell though. Away being at the game it was cold. It was rainy and it was just like damn out. This is football. Weather's that I don't know but yeah. No. I definitely know He. He I believe in when he says he's. He was a hitter that did better when it got warm. Not that good of a hitter in the cold. Certainly, see see that that would be the case. Which I think is also in the film. You'll see you know one of the things that makes a Kerry Wood's twenty strikeout game. All the more impressive is that he's. He's doing it on one of those days, and the rain is coming down east going through like You know thirteen fourteen fifteen strikeouts that day, so? Yeah! It's whether in and regularly I think is probably no joke. With all of what's happening in our society in the world, not just in our country today we kind of have to look at things in stories in history, and currently through the filter of race. And how do you think race played a role in this particular story of mcgwire and Sosa and that summer? I think that people wanted to feel good about the fact that they liked this battle between these two guys who were from different cultures different countries. And different races. That probably made people want pat themselves on the back for feelings so good about it I think in part there still memories of what had happened to Hank Aaron and sort of the ugliness when he was. Setting the all time home run record. So people felt like. Wow, look at how far we've come to celebrate and get excited about the fact that this could be. A champion of homerun record that was held by either of these two guys. There's a somewhat famous. Cartoon! Where the two of them are depicted with their bats wall has been broken in the wall, says racist. You know like that. The two of them had finally solved this problem. They beaten it. And I think. It's just a you know. It's one of those times when. People have wanted to. Congratulate themselves for reaching a certain. Threshold and clearly all of those congratulations were way premature. And we're still. We're still fighting for it. I hope that the people. Look at this though as a story of these two champions, and can get some excitement out of the fact that they did come from different backgrounds, and they have very different stores,

"I know we were watchin Roger Clemens struck out twenty a few years ago that we watch Kerry wood of the cubs strike yeah what happened in nineteen eighty six with long time ago they were watching last year's dell match play just a just a strange time in that yeah it is we are you know it's where I'm I'm watch I'm gonna brush up on sports history that's and that's and positive I guess yeah it today should have been the start of the elite eight which is tough to think about stuff to think about all the money I would have probably lost but there is little silver lining in that you know people and saying you got to keep your mind active in these tough times you got to keep yourself busy and what I've been doing I've been going back to the history of my sports book and looking at all the bets I've lost a little like motivation to stop betting at least I'm not losing all this money on the March madness when I'm saying what I did last year instead the dumb bets I put and I lost Texas was definitely never going to make it to the final four in twenty seventeen I don't know why I did that but I've had the time to look back at my past discrepancies well you know maybe it's a as I like to say been that gambling is the work of the devil some anymore the work of the devil speaking of basketball coming up at five fifteen today excuse me six fifteen this weather great friend Brian Davis who broke the story yesterday that Shaka smart has new life you know the second smart will be back next year for the Texas longhorn basketball team also coming up at six thirty tonight to visit whether good buddy Randy Cohen who has taken sitting also is in the restaurant business with C. te house grill so we're gonna talk about the business of sports because Randy's business etiquette city dot com is selling tickets and they're nothing to sell tickets to right now we're gonna talk about talk to him about the future we just heard from are fox news the World Series and baseball could go to Christmas that is while the think about subway that's talk about baseball but we haven't really brush up on baseball past couple weeks but there's no baseball building they should have been one three days ago dentist go Thursday yeah stay in and that didn't happen obviously so it's been a it's been a question mark when they will start the season rob Manfred went on Scott van pelt show the other day and kind of gave the information you know so far and what he has said with the because come out saying that the MOB season won't start until a few things happen number one is there is no ban on mass gatherings that limit the ability to play in front of fans which is yeah yeah and then there's number two is there no travel restrictions and three medical experts determined games will not pose a risk to the health of teams and fans so what it sounds like to me is they will not start the season until they are able to have full capacity in fans and it's all hardware Hey I've got to tell me we are a long way from there being no mass gatherings I'm thinking all matter or I guess yeah my feeling is I think it's gonna be may be maybe the end of may or June to tell the truth sadly this what what this tells me also is we could be seeing baseball twenty twenty one because I I know I don't want the net if your vote I don't see them here restraint I see the point restrictions on mass gatherings I don't see that happening anytime soon yes baseball is is clearly they're kind of going against the grain with other sports saying they're willing to play you know in front of an anti crowding the stadium baseball's clearly saying they will not play unless their fans are allowed to be there well the rich I know it's a money making scheme they need you know the money from the gates but you know rob Manfred clearly he is he is keen on having his fans at those games anyways we just heard from fox news I think the World Series may go up but again got against Christmas which I'm so I'm all about you know baseball well so you know basically you said that the World Series in New York City the New York Yankees are stacked the hate to burst your bubble but I might have already put twenty five Bucks in to win the World Series I hate to burst your bubble Sonny boy but they also said if it goes into December yes it would be at a warm yeah whether neutral field which would be very different because like I said the New York Yankees the red Sox any of those you know continues northeastern teams if they get the you know the home field advantage it's not having this year and that's a major a major effect on the game I disagree hello I'm calling remember let others see area okay okay Astros in Washington last year that's what it's about further how many times did the home team would love to have a disastrous because that's relevant to cheated didn't did Chicago Cubs in twenty sixteen when they won the World Series their fans were probably twenty five percent you know credit for that okay what happened last year when the Astros fans did not help their team win any games at all nor did the Washington Washington nationals win any games at home damn you the bubble is bursting you got me there in a bubble has burst okay what we regardless I think it if they play in December there's going to be a huge fight for I don't know how they can be self gain several with the football season going on this is a football country well look at a very difficult task but the same time you know we could have we could have day baseball World Series which I would love when it's less than a day baseball world so I had to be in the nineteen fifties no no no probably early nineteen eighties except for the invention of the light pole I love day baseball games you'll love this I don't the baseball we went to we had a cubs game and we want to do damage Kaga you've never experience with the bunting the world or in the middle of the day I'm not for that I am prepared to see some baseball and the snow with these guys have key matching a catcher kitchen a hundred mile per hour fastball in the cold his hands would be just one big I exploit baby awful about that broken back a broken bats if you get if you get you know the early a little chin music if you take one on the back if you get beyond anything called baseball's the worst baseball and I'm all here for it okay we're gonna take a break and after this break we're gonna visit with our good buddy Brian Davis of the Austin American statesman Shaka smart got the call yesterday that he will be head basketball coach the Longhorns will talk to Brian about all things.

"I kind of made sure that like what's my rule that like every week I had to get off campus at least once going out for tacos or going to a cubs game. It was just at the time. You know, when I go to ninety six or two thousand at the very Sammy Sosa time. Yeah. Yeah. So star that window you could still kind of go, and like, and like some would say, you take it for fifteen bucks. And it was a pretty good. See just kind of be spontaneous. You know member? You know, one time like it was raining. And then so people are like oh. Takes her fifteen bucks. It was like Kerry wood against Tom glavin, and we like sat behind home plate, so total style. Contrasting those two pitchers. I like the White Sox to a lot of fun times at what was then called Comiskey park. But, but yeah, so experiments still call it that. Yeah. Well, I think finally what is it? No. It's not even you know, it's guaranteed rate field, and you know, with all due respect to the White Sox seasons ticket holder what a lousy name for and their emblem is their logo is an arrow going down which is not the logo. You want on your stadium? But if they signed Bryce Harper with money, well Chato is the guy they're going after back to this. We'll get back to baseball in a second. I have to confess that I've had some nights ruined by painful heartburn and acid reflux..

"Mackinaw the hamilton my shot navy should wrap it really he's not gonna waste a shot this is his shot right now for mac williamson and it is a story of baseball today twenty eighteen power hitters even those who who strike out or going to get the biggest shot and the giants need it and so it's good for him good for him and he played well defensively today and he gave it gave the giants a big boost yesterday so this is a chance right now twenty eighteen and if you if you can hit the ball out of the park and you got a good launch angle even if you strike out you're gonna be in the game and that's the way it goes adam copeland joins us adam how are you you're at the game tonight yeah it was man and and i was blessed with a no hitter was that the first now we've got people on the line i'm going to get everybody on eight eight km bureau so just bear with us for a few minutes but the question i threw out to everyone tonight is if you were added no hitter i want to hear from you is this your first one that you saw i know i'm spoiled marty this is the third one i've seen i was at a i was at a perfect game which might be the greatest might be the greatest game ever pitched in baseball history and extra kerry wood's twenty strikeout performance as a rookie but but i was also at lytham second one which is a little grittier of a no hitter that almost kind of cool though also the the last great titi performance very good there's something isn't there something about a no hitter when you get close in the ninth inning comes around and everybody everybody in the ballpark knows it and everyone everyone can feel the pressure you're you're absolutely right but something unique about this one too is you know how well red sox fans travel and be.

"And i say hey listen i don't know why you're crying look this team young they're going to be back don't worry about it like the one it again next year they'll be back later the pitching johnny got mark prior and kerry wood in some bronco and they got all these great young like they're gonna be fine manitoba pitching do not worry about it they're going to be back oops thirteen years later and i still remember that because i was convinced that i was giving good good advice and as it turns out not even close they they were i mean they didn't i mean they it took them five years to get back and then they couldn't couldn't win a game they got swept by the dodgers they got eliminated by the diamondbacks one year i get what you're not good not good at all for the chicago cubs but at that moment i really felt like don't worry about it this team young they're set up for success the next ten years are going to be there's not only were the next ten years not there's it took thirteen to actually do what they tried to do in two thousand three finally win a world series and one hundred eight years in between one world series winning another okay so when i hear these people talk about the seventy sixers and they talk about man the next ten years or set up for success when i keep hearing that stuff if i were sixer fan if i were somebody covering the nba or if i were somebody just kind of thinking about what the nba is gonna look like down the road i would get those those thoughts out of my mind in a hurry ben simmons is is so good and you can almost see him get better every single game joel embiid is quickly becoming one of my favorite.

"Said i was really wrong i thought for sure this guy would be good and he just wasn't i guess baseball's littered with those types of player but to a few jump out and all the years you've been around the game well of course and i mean it's a bad example but it's it's the closest one to home i thought mark pryor went to fifty game i thought kerry wood was a hall of famer and he was great early and then it just shows you you get hurt playing this game and the thing that keeps you alive your your arm goes away you're done whereas a a great football player can lose something and still compete kerry wood loses that incredible tilt on that's lighter and he's different pitcher it's it's hard hard game to play and it played every year it's been a weird season let's face it timmy we've talked about it during the course of the season is this going to sort of galvanize the players at some point will they look to get some things back when it's time to renegotiate will they look to address service time manipulation all that is is is gm's get smarter and they don't want players that are thirty and older anymore like are they going to fight for free agent earlier in service time manipulation like are we going to see those battles in the next coming think we will and i think we've seen the market shifts and i think we've seen a sea change this year and i don't think it's coming back not anytime soon it's cataclysmic out of yeah he's new brilliant young general managers are remorseless they are cold blooded cutthroat this is the value of this player and all of our organization essentially had the same information now so they all have information that says you can't give jake arrieta five years at this age you can't and they won't and.
