"They were asked to then appoint people to their committees, and they set up a task force for every industry. For retailing for manufacturing. I mean, the list goes on for transportation, blah, blah, black. But for the travel industry There was a task force just for hotel years There was a task force just for tour operators and so on down the list. And, um, what they did was put The best and the brightest, The most active the ones everybody knows, or, you know, clever and creative together in these committees that came up with Guidelines that made sense for their particular sector of the economy. And got the word out and got behind it and we were actually in the carry Writers Museum in the Stole County Kerry, Ireland. On I'm going to say the 16th or 17th of July. It was just before we flew home on the 20th. And it was there were hand sanitizing devices at the entry. Before you entered another one. On the other side of that doorway really meant for people were exiting. And throughout the building, and they had social distancing and they had all kinds of jazz in places how many people could come in and when they could come in and whatnot? And I was sitting in the corner of their gift shop reception area. When a woman from fault Ireland their tourism board with her mask our latex gloves or clipboard, her pen and our check sheet came in to make sure That she was visiting county Kerry that day in various places, and she was checking off. Did you? Are you doing this? Are you doing that? How many people do you let in an hour? So that the government was involved in helping to establish criteria to keep things under control. And they did, and they put a lid on it. And that's what we were able to come home on July 20th. Regrettably, they then felt confident. Open the doors to every everybody in their uncle. From Spain and Italy and whatever and then bingo, The numbers started to rise again. So that you know, during the Christmas New Year's period, everything is in complete lockdown in Ireland now, But they're serious about this. They're on lockdown like for the next 34 weeks. Because they want to get it under control. And it's so wonderful that there are trade organizations in the travel industry and particularly asked as a leader in this that are working with your members. To help establish Of regiment to live by as opposed to, you know, the Wild West, where you know, everybody does their own thing, And maybe we die by it. Not a pretty story that way. So how are you communicating with all of your members? Yeah, I mean way have tremendous communication platforms that that we used to remember alerts go out toe ar 15,000 members on a daily basis. Will give everyone the landscape of we're working on in terms of who are communicating with on the hill. What sort of regulatory bodies were reaching out to that? Could be, you know, get anything from going to the Treasure department to have him clarify. The loan process for some of our larger members to asking the CDC to review the no sale order and T O work with them to on provisions for the safe return of Of cruise cruise passengers, So we communicate very, very regularly and effectively with with our members. But the interesting thing to me that when I heard your your story of being an island, Ireland Is that that the consistency creates confidence right that when you when you went when they when the government can work with a pump with the public health Experts to create and communicate standards again. Helping suppliers know what they need to do and helping people know what they need to do in order to travel safely. That's where the peanut butter and chocolate sort of relationship comes into being because to be frankly, very frank with you. It's a shared responsibility. So people are going to return to travel on you. No way Pull consumers as I mentioned before, and some of them say, you know, I'm fine and unsafe with with the practices that I've employed, but I'm not so sure about what the person that's sitting next to me on the plane is going to do. And because of that uncertainty, I'm going to sit on the sidelines for a while longer. We can see now the FAA mandated masks tomorrow. I think it would take away some that ambiguity. Now. A lot of the airlines have already said that you have to wear a mask with a plane. But there's no FAA regulation behind you. The worst thing I could have used. You could get. You could get kicked off a plane or denied boarding. But if you knew you were gonna get fined, you know what a pretty hefty fine you might take it more seriously and again with the F a signal that that this was a serious thing by by mandating mask wearing on planes, and I think you'd see the 500,000 passengers that are going on an airplane right now grow to more than a million And then more than two million like it was practically a creek and them. Well in order to fly on July 20th from Dublin to Boston. It was a requirement to wear a mask in the airport. And to wear a mask on the plane. And I bought these silly looking hats like they call them bucket ATS. Those of you who didn't know used to watch or catch it on cable, Gilligan's Island that dopey hat that Gilligan used to wear. Well, if it's you know, this round crown of a hat with a big wide brim around it and attached to it. Is a fairly heavy but pliable piece of acrylic that makes you look like a welder. But you can see through it, and we got one for my husband. One for me. We were dopey hats over face masks. When we got in the plane, we took the face masks off. What? We left the hat mask on. So when we would eat, you could easily just shovel the food underneath your hat. Whatever. I mean, we were taking no chances and happily, we were able to travel Don't negate travel by car people, even if it's your own car and talk with a travel advisor about destinations. And resorts and hotels that are taking travel seriously during this problem in terms of disinfecting and cleanliness, and I want to thank you. I know I got to cut you loose. I wish we could talk again. Maybe we can talk again soon in the new year, happy everything to you, Zane and everybody had.

"Me. Welcome to travel with Stephanie Abrams. Some exotic there is something wonderful of 'bout traveling to places where you actually get to know people it's not just about all the places she visited so you can sit down with a book and say, well have been there and I've been there and I've been there it's kind of that's a fun game. By the way, I love doing that. But more importantly, in my travels, I really make a concerted effort to get to know people not just know their name or having once upon a time had the opportunity to shake their hand in passing but really to know people that often I say, I know them BC. Meaning before children. I know them before they were married, you know. And these are all people for the most part. Either they are in the field of travel tourism and hospitality or they are somehow connected with the traveler, and that's how I met them. One of the places where I probably have more friends away from home that I have at home. Is in Ireland and there are just there's never enough time to see everybody wanna see on every trip. No matter how much time we spend on the trip Ireland and I was determined on this auspicious visit to Ireland amazing visit for which I throw out the gauntlet to fellow broadcasters. Please contact me I want to gather up a group of broadcasters, and have you either fly in the best case scenario Shannon airport. Second. Best case, potentially quirk air international airport because there are markets in the US. You can fly into cork city nonstop from wherever that is one of the being Providence, Rhode Island. Or into Dublin, which is really a quick to our gorgeous drive much like the drive from Boston to Berkshire county in Massachusetts to our Dr same kind of road beautiful scenery, and you're on the west coast, and you'll be in Galway in no time flat. But south of there by about I'm going to say maybe a little more than an hour. You'll arrive in Ballybunion now for those of you golfers euro smiling ear to ear if you haven't played their you know of it. It's a fabulous course. But in Ireland there so fabulous courses. But what makes by Ballybunion newsworthy for broadcasters? It's where Marconi sent the first voice radio message across the Atlantic Ocean. And it went from Ballybunion county Kerry Ireland to Nova Scotia and Canada and March nineteenth was the one hundredth anniversary of that historic event. And we were invited the only American broadcasters, by the way, why shouldn't say American because the Canadians get upset over that they're American to their on North America. Some of the Mexicans Gillette all North America. But the first I was the only US broadcast. Mr. invited to this unbelievable event and I had already determined that. I was going to catch up with somebody hadn't seen in a long time. Any sitting in front of me now. I thought I was going to catch up with him and his last place of serious endeavor. And when I found out he was there anymore, I was shocked to hear. He was in a place on my list of must visit places that must visit place is kinda America host hotel. That is a quick ten minute gorgeous drive along Galway bay. I guess it is, I mean, it looks like the ocean out there ultimately leading to the Atlantic Ocean, but it is just a gorgeous spot with beach, and I don't know this is one another one of those great sunny days in Ireland, contrary to the opinion you here expressed by every Irishman is first words are apologizing for the weather. I don't know what they're talking about..

We came to a half a block away from the castle ruin. That's amazing on a gloriously sunny afternoon. That was perfect for this event to a place called, Mick. Mudan. M. U. N. Apostrophe S, McMullan's pub bar restaurant. And the owner said, well, you can I wanted to interview. And she said, well, you know that corner or that corner, I said, well, this is fine. Most of that show, it'll be nice and quiet there. And then came the fife and drum band. I'm gonna guess you could hear that. They've just stopped for the moment anyway. But good that we use sport. Mike's something like being in Madison Square Garden at a basketball game. So you were all grant. Marvelous. Thank you very much, come and play more for us to care, too. He was beginning to think maybe those conspiracy on the part of some intelligence agency, which is manipulating these things. And at that point he decided he was his thinking was becoming maybe a little bit parent extravagant. Got out of you follow g which I I'm much more interested than maybe less than usual Easter bunny. I'm survey shin that work. Studying anomalous rabid site. They pay a lot of tensions the killer rabbit that attack. Jimmy Carter had the gluco, which is a six foot twelve white rabbit that once county Kerry Ireland and bunny man, which is another six to rapid recorded frequently in Cornwall. I think we may get one deeper insights out of these rapid questions than we'll get out of the UFO's. Yes about. About forgot energy. -freshing that information. For for one fear. Yeah. The. That's the nice thing about being a celebrity. You don't have to afford people keep giving it to you. I was I was really curious that they buried Reich's books. I afraid phrase the movement absolutist like just as the late Justice black. The constitution says the she'll be no laws Bridget freedom of speech, or of the press and two main laws means no was like Justice black used to say, I'm a simple farm boy when I see the word no laws like Nick, it means though laws, and I don't understand the genius electoral processes by which the majority of the court has arrived at the opinion that no was means some laws. That's that's the way I feel about it. So and so I got interested in Reich. I went around trying to find people who owned Reich's book. So I could read them, and it was like living very really was like, maybe my other book that do it quiz. Asian really felt like living in the times of the position once papers of research reprieve repressed site victory. What's passed around friend defendant, always worried that the position without son, you and? I I've been interested in right gep a sense. One of the most interesting of his books as contact with space, which was burned by the government. But since the government is listed the ban and allowed publishers to republish Reich's books Lavelle, how Reich foundation has refused to allow this to be republished. They don't want this went out. Now, it's the right key into our repressing. Right. Instead of the government, I got a copy of contact with spice through subterranean channels. And it's the most fascinating book I ever read page. It's like looking gene skied on television to pay that keep changing my mind about how crazy it was that the of the is life. No doubt he was a little bit. But the the weirdest things in that book contact with spice, the UFO contacts are also recounted by Reich's wife, also all and door for her biography of him, and by his son Peter Wright, and his book book of dreams, and the the classical explanation of that sort of thing is that some forms of psychoses contagious, which I have never believed you can dispose of any day that way that's like just before Reich went to prison. He announced he was going to use the org on the cloud. Buster the Golan via BUSTER to create a rainstorm in Maine to prove that the are going energy work and the rain storm and the explanation of what the Doxiadis is coincidence. There was a hand up in the back in finding. Yes. I I had a lot of experience with are gone boxes back in with these. "We tried to down the road of peace from Liz, stole to Ballybunion in county Kerry Ireland, this whole area is just gorgeous people, and the funny thing about it is that we have been almost too badly. I don't think we ever went out to valley by. When you when you go from Limerick and you drive along the Shannon estuary. You'll go through phones where the phone's flying boat museum is now as of about two years ago the phones Maritime Museum. Very much worth. Stop people. You're gonna love it and say hi to Margaret showing a seat for me when you get there. And if you keep going you're gonna pass Glen castle. Which I don't know that they're back to doing overnight stays for just transient people. Are they I'm not quite sure that they're doing accommodation? Yes. Yeah. Well, it used to be you could just come and spend the night or two or more. And then they went to only exclusive if you're going to take it over for a family or a party or something. And so I have to check in check out Glenn GIO. I n castle lovely place. And then you keep going and you come to target where you can pick up the ferry which runs year round schedule is a little different in the fall winter months in early spring than it is late spring summer early fall, and you can get the ferry maybe eight ten minutes to cross the estuary, and that's a shortcut to get from that part of the world to the cliffs of our along the Spanish point all that up the west coast of Ireland instead of having to drive in a use shape around to go up through Limerick and you'll save yourself a good hour more of driving. But if he we've never gone past that. Have you go just a bit past that? And you just keep going a bit. You're gonna come to Ballybunion probably best known among golfers because of the Bali bunion golf club. And the voice you're hearing me check is my personal information booth here is that of Brian O'Callaghan who's the head pro at the Ballybunion golf club, which by the way is just a gorgeous place. So we were at a grand party there last night. It was just fabulous Brian. How long have you been associated with the Ballybunion golf club twenty nine years? Newcomer newcomer. Yes. Did you ever work anywhere else? Rotate. Yes. Further other places around the country said much more in Northern Ireland where a little Gulf Cup called Warrenpoint cuffs up. This just across the border on the Carlingford Lough. Okay. When you said you worked at a golf course rather than Ireland to came to mind and one was one point rush. Royal portland. Russia's the other. Title cut down down. Back of the sleeve Donner. That's correct. You know, it's funny. I took a group in two thousand and two of ten people from the US to Ireland to introduce things they needed to know, he's all people travel eight of them had to do with travel agencies and between the eight represented seventeen thousand travel agencies in America. In fact, there are a couple of people in Ireland to said to me, how did you ever get these people to come here because these guys don't go on these trips, you know, where you go off exploring in whatever. And I said they came because I asked them, and they have confidence in me. So when I said, you have to go they went so. When we got and the other two were they worked they were editorial staff of major travel trade newspapers, so all of them were influencers of people travel, and where they go and that kind of thing, and they knew nothing about what had been the Ireland one had been to Northern Ireland. Okay. So this was a real education for all of them. And we get to the hotel where we had lunch with Howard as things whose family owns a whole bunch of tells keep building and buying growing. It's marvelous. And out back of the sleeve honored hotel is County Down golf course where the American Express open is there often in all kinds of fancy golf things. A lot of big events had Walker Cup Irish Open safe. Lots of lots of big amateur events over the years. So. It was raining. But Manny Lleneres from holidays and travel in Austin, Texas, and Don gold who was the head of a consortium of over three thousand travel agencies. Travel authority that merged with international travel. Rain people have been in the travel industry. A long time. Remember, ron? Ron Blaylock those two companies merged and he had he sat on top of an empire of over three thousand travel agencies. The two of them are crazy. Golfers. And they had to stand on the grounds of the Royal County Down golf course. So we waited for them while the two glued ran out the back door in the rain. So that they can step on the golf course. Run back in and say we stood on it. What is it about golf thickets into people's flood s Chris is crazy game? Yeah. People just get hooked on guess. They get the game. They get excited. And that's you know, once you get a cheer. If you never never really lose. It. Yeah. Well, was it King James found that out? When his archers were practising. They were out there. With their sticks and stones. I wonder if that's where it sticks and stones will break your bones. You think that's related to golf? Could be magin playing with the equipment of old cart. I've tried it. Have you have here? Try to put some people some friends who who are collectors and play with the equipment. Oh difficult. It's not easy. It is. You know, it's an experience certainly to try it because nothing like the modern stuff at all. It's very difficult. I would imagine it would have been much heavier too much heavier for just very less much less forgiving. Well. What was your first memory of being on a golf course your very first memory? Less than ten. I think I was my father's clubs were in our home. And we started hitting golf balls from the front lawn cars going to the front from roads. And the driver yet. Maybe maybe it's a good idea to bring this guy out onto the golf course rather than the front front Lonzo. Yeah. So the movement to their front front to the golf course couple of days later. I was just going out really to particularly to caddy for somebody local pro who was friend of my father said, no, no, he's not kidding. He's playing so they gave me clubs pretty and join me.

"I'm happy to say. He was with us in the last hour. I thought we'd finished up, but I didn't want to take away his pleasure in being able to. Thank some folks who really have made it possible for the Latigo Lartigue memorial monorail memorial from. Lartigue monorail project here in LaSalle county, Kerry Ireland. These people came from across the ocean. Absolutely. This project cost about two million euro as so I had to go to America. Collect money, and I collected major funding in New York, for example. Where people like Morris? Regan was a major country veteran part retardant and Dennis color models. Then in Chicago where Jesse real estate for Illinois was a big supporter and also people like Carlos very well known there. Mike Sheehan sheriff for Cook County, dick Devine. And so many more then headed to San Francisco where I must say, the local mirror time was very helpful and the Irish community there, then San Jose was man called Tom mckenry McKinley centers called off from what he is huge connection to carry Gama symbol people help me and then San Diego where John Lynch who son. John Lynch is the famous American footballer now general manager of the forty Niners and he kept and Tampa Bay to win the Super Bowl in two thousand and three. They all helped me so much with financial contributions because it's a major project, but more especially at liked it. Many in terms of had that came over from universities and colleges in America the walkman in the doll, and it was an intern Massachusetts. If I wasn't a TD as we call it here. Congressman or whatever this would have never happened because I wouldn't have had the resources far the supposed to research and also collect the money, but a girl called cotton mills get all the early investigation for this from New York where she captain bills would have been I think around the New York area. Maybe are you saying mills? But. His family from Dutchess county New York because I'll tell you a really quickey slide in. There's a house in Dutchess counties that even when you come to visit New York next. I'm going to meet you and when wisc you'll wait till called stats Berg mansion, it's right next to Hyde Park where Franklin Delano Roosevelt's home was. And I don't know weekend. Summers. Whatever home and. That was the mills family and they had among other children, twin daughters, one of which was named Beatrice and Beatrice meant married viscount somebody or other who owned castle the castle castle Forbes in county Longford. Because those people had money series cartridge, anywhere. I'm not saying they had money your family, but a cotton bond open, Scott, and she was excellent and very quite garlanded reading part and research, and so many more. So I would just like technology great US contribution. Like, don't so many projects you have done burning the American Ireland fund, and we all saw much to America and a very. Thiessen generous people that are over there have contributed so much development of this country. Both I suppose someone artistic heritage cultural pint of view apart from all the hundred thousand jobs that they provided to their there is companies. So I just like to say a big, thank you. There's a lot of the towns and cities in Ireland are twins with other towns around the world while we have a lot of them in America. This stall is twinned with Lescot gutters in partner. Okay. Which is one of the most prosperous towns per capita than America. So we're very fortunate to be twinned with Las Gatos, and we receive great cultural artistic I suppose benefit from that maybe not industry, but Sutton, the from a cultural point of view data's been thirty three successful that relationship. I'm very glad to hear that the town that we live in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, and my husband Mark, and I were instrumental in creating the twin town relationship with Lanesborough county Longford airland, and I don't I. Well, I don't think we have yet quite the spirit. In the US in our relationship with lanes pro Ireland to the point that there's a real deep rich benefit taking place culturally and otherwise between the two towns, but two miles from us as a city called pittsfield Massachusetts and they're in their twentieth or twenty first year, something like that. Twins. Their sister city is Bella nine county male, and that is a thriving amazing relationship that I aspire to in terms of the two lanes bras. But you can see it works. How much? Yeah. Thank you very much. We could be here for the week. So many stories to tell each other. And actually the theme of sympathy. Stay was story telling the show, but you're one of the greatest storytellers evolve. Stephanie, oh my gosh. I'm glad this is recorded. We're gonna play that again and again. Well, thank you. I really appreciate that. And we're going to be catching up with you later. We're also going to be catching up with Princess Electra Marconi who is the daughter of Marconi makes it possible for all of us in broadcasting to be broadcasting. Thank you. So very very much for joining us. And I know you're gonna run over to the museum now. So that you could be in place when a Princess Electra. And my good friend, Mark, Leslie, who is a frequent guest on my shows. He's become a regular. We're going to catch up with you later. Thank you so much for your generosity of your time. I really appreciate because I know how crazy busy today is especially for you. All right people. Stay with me. We got.

This is funny October eleven th through the fifteen fifteenth in Las Gatos, it is the Irish arts and writers festival that showcases the best in contemporary Irish arts and literature. We have poets painters. Journalists film singers, author of the Irish is on Trump to a film about the great hunger from a whiskey tasting to a genealogy lesson. There's a discussion about Frederick Douglass the abolitionists he went to Ireland hung out there for a while. And for four days the Irish Arte writers festival just takes over Los Gatos. I was part of it last year. And it was one of the best experiences ever. They take over the library Hannigan restaurant CJ. What does it CJ's where I see? CBS? Charlie's the Whitney museum anywhere. You pop in and something's going on. There's also a traditional events in Oakland and San Francisco, but don't believe me. Joining me to talk about the four day of events is Katharine Barrett. The creator and director welcome Kathryn, Barry. Thank you, Maureen Langan great to be back. Yes. It is. And I love this woman. I saw her to her poetry last year. I'm like, wow. You know, I liked poetry until I saw you. Do it emerged Martin. Woo. Thank you Maureen. You are something else lady. You are a Spitfire intense. You're angry you're likable, your real you hit on all the jets. Thank you. You're welcome. She's also the author of cruelty of men, and we'll get to that critic calls at a tidal wave that trag shoe like a piece of debris through Irish history from the ice age to gangland Dublin a bible of eft up Irishness that is a review but the dragging like a piece of debris that could have been my childhood mother taking okay? So let's get to it so much going on, Catherine. Barry, let's start with you first off why Las Gatos for Irish writers festival. There's a big significance. There scatters is a sister city with a stole in county Kerry Ireland that's headed Irish writers week for forty years. So they formed a sister city committee many years ago in Los Gatos. And when I went there, I realized it's the perfect charming little town for festival in Irish style festival. So yeah, I call it my match madness project and launched it three years ago. This is the third festival, and yeah, it's been a bit of a an uphill battle. But it's we're into the third year. So you put an enormous amount of time into it. But I have to tell you to spend a week in there because it's what Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday, or what are the dice here? It's we're actually opening at Montalvo arts center this year on Friday night and Saratoga. So it's not strictly Las Gatos until Saturday and Sunday or both. Full days in Las Gatos prior to that we have two of our headline visitors. I guess Paul Muldoon Infantino tool and don't take for granted that people know who they are. Okay. Paul Muldoon is our political prize winning poet best poets since the second World War the second World War. That's a lot of poets. So it's a may not be a lot of words because poets don't use a lot of words. That's a lot of poetry. He is our our nowadays shameless. He I guess he said professor at Princeton, and we're really excited to have him over. It's a rare west coast. Visit Paul Muldoon and Fenton. Cincinnati tool is a op Ed columnist for the Irish Times any writes for the New York Times as well. He's here with two hats as well. We have him at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco on Thursday, the eleventh in the evening and on Friday night. He is part of our opening reception showcasing a George Bernard Shaw exhibit and book that that. Not will has written. So what does that mean? Going on in San Francisco. What does that the World Affairs Council got the World Affairs Council who's on? What's he doing without doing? Of course, they're having. He's he's at Mr. Brexit. So they have them talking about Ireland Brexit, so it's a very different different animal to George Bernard Shaw the next night..
