Horse With Long Odds Wins Kentucky Derby

"I started last hour by noting The Kentucky Derby win of rich strike. Shown for some blessed reason put down $10,000 on rich strike. And ended up with $800,000. The beauty of that is as he still working with me. No matter how rich Sean gets, he stays with me. Is that fair to say, Sean? Yeah. So that's the course was 80 to one. I can't get over it. And I don't even follow horse racing, but it's the longest odds in the winter in Kentucky Derby and over a hundred years.

"So yeah, if that's all you do, if you never make past liner combats, then the same. But again, those are two of the lowest house edge points you can make. Right. Those are the best. Anyway, I hope that doesn't happen. And I'm glad you got a free pin, because you're always happy when you get something. Even if it's a pen, you know, a 6 pack of Coke, whatever. Even if it falls apart the next day, at least when you're walking out, you think, well, I got this. This is my $500 pen. That's right. I stuck it to him. I can't believe how much I've stuck to those casinos. Got a lot of pens. Well, 6 packs of Coke. Yeah, that too. We have a casino. We're giving away better gifts. Like fillet of salmon that's been vacuum packed and sealed. In a thing, here's your salmon. Refrigerated as soon as I live. It's vacuum packed. It'll stay for 5 years in the freezer. I wouldn't recommend it eating it after one, but you can leave it for up to 5 years. All right, I'll make a note, one more thing for our casino. I have a lot of it at home in our freezer. Fish that we've never eaten. Oh, I forgot that was there. Yeah. Yeah. All right, next up is Emily. Hey Mark and doctor Mike, this is Emily from Houston. "Get your 5 to one money because you bet before he moved the line. Right. But it's different in horse raising because it's para mutual, right? The odds change based on how much money comes in. And it was bet. Right. The track is guaranteed a certain percentage, right? So you don't get your 5 to one. Right, yeah, so if this is the case, you bet when the horse was 5 to one, and then he makes his big bet in the horse goes down to three to one. Well, that's what odds are you're getting now is three to one. Now when consequently, that's why most horse betters wait as long as they can to make their bets. Right, that's exactly if you're a sports better and you find a line that you don't agree with. You want to bet that early before the books find out about that. You think it's off. You think that there's going to be money coming in that's going to change it and you want to get taken advantage of that. In horse racing, it's the opposite. You want to wait till the end and see where the odds lay and see where you get a better value for your bet. And Mike, you and I were talking about this when you know that mattress Mac is going to make a big bet on the favorite because maybe we didn't mention that. The promotion was, if the favorite wins The Kentucky Derby, then you get your money back for the thing. And he determines the favorite. That's the thing, right? He could determine the spending so much money. Now obviously he's not going to bet on a long shot. To make it the favorite, because he might not be able to move it that much. He's going to bet on a horse that maybe is already the favorite or close to the favorite. Well, they were trying to figure out earlier in the day who he was going to bet on. Was it going to be, well, there was and was looking like the favorite initially and taba was there. And then there was also epicenter. Yeah. And he could have bet on any of those and made them the favorite. As the day was going on, even though they were saying, oh, you know, we've got a co favorites here at 5 to one..

"Type of situation. You have the season veteran Bob Baffert 6 time Derby winner, the young up and comer and Brad Cox with the Derby favorite. Who is going to win Derby one 47, we are just moments away. Larry Coleman, from NBC, has the call here on the horse racing radio network. Which will be the last load here. 19 three year olds. All in line and ready for the start. They're off in The Kentucky Derby. And off to a solid beginning here and it will be but PETA's spirit who comes out the best to take the early lead soup and sandwich on the outside away running on second helium is close up to the pace in between those two, and these three will leave them early. And then it's hot rock Charlie behind them and balloon on the inside. A central quality is outside of horses and four legs from the front early, and that it's super stop. Followed by highly motivated rock your world's coming from well off the pace here as they make their way into the turn. He's a good ten lakes off the lead. And for the inside it's old Bezos. They're being followed by midnight bourbon who's well off the pace as well. Like the king's next funny inside and Brooklyn strong, dynamic one is next. Older gender bundled on the outside by hidden stash and at the back of the pack earlier perp on it. And the Kramer is keep me in mind. The first half mile was 46.7 seconds and butina's spirit leads them up the back stretch the bump effort training is three quarters of a length in front. Sandwich on the outside second. Maybelline rafts in right behind the frontrunners. I don't know the inside. Then it's helium and fourth hot rod Charlie behind them with central quality begins to move on the far outside as they make their way around the far turn. Medina Spirit is still the leader here. And mendeleev comes on the scene on the outside, I have played behind a central quality has put their pressure hot rod Charlie right in behind the leaders flabby and prat asking him to go now as they make their way to the top of the stretch. But Tina's spirit and Mandela strikers drive hot rod Charlie and a central quality posing on the outside, the part of them come into the final prologue. Mandela fighting for the front Medina Spirit battles on hot rod Charlie on the outside and centrality on the far outside before of them coming to the finish in The Kentucky Derby. Here's the wire. The beverage doesn't again merge spirit as one look at Kentucky Derby. That balloon was second on run triple the third essential quality was for two one O two the final time bob beverage stands alone with 7 Derby wins. Are you kidding me? How good is Bob Baffert? We knew he was good, but this is absolutely ridiculous. A 7th Kentucky Derby win, a second in a row for Bob Baffert and for jockey John Velasquez, the Hall of Fame connections holding off all challengers after making the pace in here. And but what a performance here today. I told you going into the gate, it was a lot like Tom Brady versus Patrick Mahomes, but just like in the Super Bowl, Tom Brady, Bob Baffert, get the victory here today. And it seems like the instructions were the same as what they were a year ago with authentic. I think Bob Baffert told.

"Fall and come back and say, wow, I mean, you know, he got to do whatever I wanted. So, you know, we're in a good spot with him. He's doing really well. Other than just the time on a stopwatch when a horse is training up to the first race, especially or anything else you can see on paper. What let you know that essential quality was special. Probably just as his physical, you know, just, you know, I thought he was a great physical. The pedigree suggested he would be a horse that could stretch out his ability to I think shut it off. You know, you never really know when you run these horses and you run them first time out and yes, and we go three quarters if they're gonna respond in a the right way or the wrong way. And I mean, wrong way by basically kind of getting over the top mentally. And that's really separates a class horse from a horse it can take it to the next level. They have the mental stability to take it all in and still perform in the afternoon. Essential qualities getting the lion's share, the attention is the favorite for the Derby, but mandolin is a horse that also lasts late summer and fall really showed some big time potential. Yeah, he was able to break his main first time out another coat. We liked a lot. I was able to start off his career too for two, and then we're in a real good race in la com. He was third, but he ran a great race for those first race round two turns. We thought it was exactly what we wanted. He moved forward in his next star that in my eyes made him possibly one of the top two or three Derby contenders out there. And who's in a Derby, you mean just no excuse. I mean, I wish we had give you some reason why he ran as flat as he did, but, you know, I'm glad that he came out of it and good order physically. And, you know, here we are, he's training as well leading up to The Kentucky Derby as he is the Louisiana Derby. And there is installed. So if we get our Susan star race, we're in good shape if we get as Louisiana Derby race, we're not going to be very happy with that. These horses train and prepare for races in a similar fashion all year round. For a race like the Derby, there's so much more attention paid to every aspect of it because we have to wait so long for the race to actually happen. Do you have to ever talk to yourself about, don't let anything get in my head, don't let anybody else try to trade my horse for me. Not really. I don't. You know, I think coming into this, I thought, you know, as far as all the media attention for myself, I thought, you know, I want to take this in and enjoy it do as many interviews as I can. And you know, enjoy it. It's a great opportunity. And I'd rather go about it interview me as opposed to the guy next door, right? So that's the way I've approached that. The two blocks away from here, you grew up, you could hear the call to the post while you were playing out in the art. I'm guessing, so have you allowed yourself to think about what it would be like to be in the winter circle in the first Saturday of May? I have. I think about it and you know, I guess I just try to map out how my horse is going to get around there. What kind of trip they're going to get? Hopefully, a clean one. I think that's what you need. And I thought, you know, look, if we're fortunate enough to win this thing, you know, how it would be just to be an amazing feeling and it's the top achievement in this game for a thoroughbred trainer source on concern. So Brad Cox, two chances to win your first Kentucky Derby good luck. Thanks Tom. I really appreciate it. Brad Cox standing in that Derby paddock now for the very first time as our Jeff bloom and Tom leech, Tom, what can you tell us? Brad.

"Pretty sad wing when the store decided to take him down. But I never lost my faith. I always keep my head up and, well, we hear again. So we hope all the best and I know essential he's gonna he's gonna run pretty well so good side of her Saturday. Welcome back to Churchill downs in Louisville. That was jockey Luis syz looking for a little redemption here this afternoon after having a Kentucky Derby taking away from him two years ago in 2019 with that disqualification of maximum security he is hoping to experience that feeling yet again in just 20 7 minutes. Trainer Brad Cox is the trainer of the horse Louisa as we'll be riding. That is the favorite essential quality and earlier Tom leach had a chance to stop by the barn and catch up with Brad. So Brad in 2018, there's a sign outside on your barn about girl winning the Kentucky yolks that was your first grade one. Louisville guy grew up near here. And now three years later, the favorite for the Derby just wanted eclipse awards. The outstanding trainer, you ever stop and think about how far things have come in such a short time. Not really. No, you know, we stay busy and, you know, just keep grinding away and I just kind of always pressing forward, you know, you're never content with what you've accomplished. I mean, you want to build off of it and continue to move forward and bottom away girl taught me a lot. She was my first taste of great wine water and it tasted well. And, you know, that's what you want. You know, can you make peek tell me years ago? He said, you know, when you went great at stakes, I mean, it's like drinking fine wine. And you don't go back to the you trying to go back to the cheap stuff. So the position where it's exactly where we'd like to be. You know, we have two really good shots in The Kentucky Derby. You know, this is the biggest stage in the thoroughbred industry in North America as far as I'm concerned. How far.

"But he ran kind of a lackluster race. When I got back to the unsettling area, however, I did one of those Cordero Frankie de Tori leaps off of Koji and ice cream. I just wrote in The Kentucky Derby. That was awesome. And sunny was not too happy with me because he expected the horse to run much better than he did. And so consequently he was a little perturbed about the outcome. And then he wasn't too happy with me that I was celebrating for finishing 7th. While McCARRON and his crew had a ton of fun, fellow Hall of Famer Mike Smith flew solo to ride pine circle in 1984. He had a dicey start, but later got an assist from the great broadcaster Howard Cosell. It was the first time I'd ever flown anywhere to ride. I was very young, you know, when I wrote my first Derby, I was 1718 years old. I'd never even gotten a cab before. I didn't know how to get from the airport to the racetrack to be honest with you, I heard some people saying they were going to Derby and I caught a ride with them. That was a mistake because how they had a mile and a half away from the track. So I had to walk for me. I might as well have walked from the airport to the track, but a group of guys are all gone. There was about four or 5 of them. And I told them I was riding pine circle and they were all excited and we were excited. Of course, they didn't have no parking credentials or nothing so they had a park. So far away. And I had this big old Jack bag with me. Man, that bag must wait about 200 pounds, but you learn as you go once you get in the room, they're pretty much have everything there for you. And it's really pretty easy, but my first experience, I've been most of the time in the bathroom to be honest with you just going back and forth to try and pee and.

"Had a great work in Santa Anita last week and did a good week in here, you know, settled in pretty nicely. So we're feeling happy about everything. We're just hopefully we got a little good luck and how great is it to see fans back out here? Don't those cheer yourself fantastic? Yeah, a little bit of normality in America. It's great. Good luck. Thank you. I would have seen the connections all making their way with their Derby contenders around that turn. They are just about to the finish line, but going the opposite way that they will come in just a little while, the run for the roses is now just 37 minutes away in conjunction with NBC sports you are listening to the 2021 Kentucky Derby on H RN. You're listening to exclusive coverage of the 147th Kentucky Derby on HR RN, presented by twin spires. I will tell you from experience, what you think is a good post can become a bad post at the break. You could get squeezed. You could break slowly. You could stumble. And what could be a bad post can become a great folks if you break well. You try as a writer, at least I did. I try and save as much ground in the first turn as you can. Because chances are you're gonna have to go somewhat wide starting to make your move on the second turn. And my philosophy was by the wire the first time without being knocked around too much. About where you want to be. You can never be exactly where you want to be in The Kentucky Derby early. If you get to with a link or two, I want to be mid pack. I want to be around 6 or 8 links off the lead. If you can do that without getting knocked around, it's a win for you and then you take what's given you after that. Sage.

"Jeff Luke. Yeah, Tom. Something different this year. This year's Kentucky Derby is going to be run without Lasix. As the industry works towards the elimination of race day medication, there was a decision made that Lasix would not be allowed. Lasix is a diuretic. And the reason for its use, it's used to help prevent a horse from bleeding in their lungs. How does that happen? It comes from strong exertion when a horse has heavy training or during the course of the race. They can bleed in their lungs, but in a decision to work on eliminating restraint medication, no Lasix will be used by any of the runners in The Kentucky Derby, including if a horse wanted to earn points in any of the Derby earning point races through the series of those races, they were not allowed to use Lasix for any of those races in order to gain point so they could gain their position in this year's Kentucky Derby. Mike? One trainer who was going to be making that walk today hoping to find himself in the winter circle is Hall of Famer, Steve asthma, earlier just stopped by the barn to visit with Steve. I'm standing here with trainer Steve as misson, and we are in front of the stall of one of his Kentucky Derby runners, super stock who's smiling at us. And Steve, you've accomplished virtually everything a trainer can accomplish. Yet, the elusive Kentucky Derby, and it's always brought up. You've got two chances and one of those chances is with the horse super stock. Can you walk us through the horse and what this whole thing means to yourself and your family? Absolutely. We have two, what we feel are excellent chances going into the Derby. Super stock here being half owned by my parents, as well as our woolsey longtime friend and partner. Not only is he representing my parents in this barn in their first Derby ever, he also gave my son Keith, his first stakes win in his brief COVID possible 45 day racing career, riding careers at jockey. So to think of what a special moment it was to have your son went a stake on a horse that is owned by your parents and nerve wolsey, and that same horse be the first representative for your parents in the greatest race in the world. The Kentucky Derby. This is really a family affair. You mentioned your parents and your son, Keith, and correct me if I'm wrong, but your brother, champion jockey cash asthma, and was also involved with the early training for super stock as well. Correct. My brother also is at the in Laredo at the training center, my mom and dad's. It's their training center caches as well. And he does the early education on a lot of horses there. As you mentioned, you know, we've been unbelievably blessed in horse racing horse racing has given us so much. And then for it to culminate mom and dad are 79 years old of dedicated their life to horse racing and to be on the stage, they are now as extremely gratifying. Going into the Arkansas Derby was super stock. He was touting us. We felt good about his chances. And obviously, at that point, I went to dream and, you know, if he's in first or second in here, he's going to have enough points to get to the Derby. I was already dreaming about it. And then when he did win the Arkansas Derby, the reality of the moment was extremely overwhelming to me. From that moment on, you just have as good as that moment was, it has been even better. Have you sat down and reflected and thought much about it talked with your other family members about not only getting to this point, but what if we cross that finish line first with this horse? What's that going to mean to us? I don't even know if that's possible. I mean, you're just, you know, you watch movies that you have a little trouble believing. And then that would be even more so. The circumstances which source even in barn, you know, he was purchased for 70,000 as a yearling to be pin hooked and resold as a two year old, the two year old sale he was in, was canceled because of the pandemic. There was just so many very unlikely scenarios to get here. But even since when he won the fraternity with Keith James on my son, that night we were talking about this isn't about us. This is mom and dad's story. How great it would be to be dedicate your life to racing, being at 79 years old and just to be able to be the proud owner of someone gave your grandson is only his first stakes win. So at one older brother, cash, extremely accomplished. And one older brother and me to think my parents and web county Laredo Texas raised two eclipse champions, then you reflect on that, trying to get to a certain point. You kind of get to that point and then you look back. Mom and dad have put me in cash in a position to have this success. Now it's their moment. What about the walk over heading to the paddock to saddle this horse? The walkover is, of course, so embedded into the history and the fabric of what The Kentucky Derby's all about. Have you thought about how the family will gather together to make that trip across the track? The only thing I've ever known my mom to ever ask me for is she wanted her 6 grandkids to walk over with you. That's who she is. I mean, it's their story. What will it mean to you to win The Kentucky Derby? I have no idea, because I haven't done it yet. Best of luck to you Steve. Thank you. Thank you. Hall of Fame receive asthma so now, making that walk with his family by his side. It's a special moment. All the horses have begun to walk over as have our reporters Jeff Blum and Tom leash. Jeff, what can you tell us? Well, I'm walking alongside trainer Victoria, Oliver, a local Kentucky and with her first Derby starter. And I was saying to Victoria, I don't understand how you can be so calm and collective. Victoria, what does this mean to you to be taking this walk for The Kentucky Derby? It means the world to me. It's everyone's dream to do this. And I've been lucky enough to be one of the people that gets to do it. Your horse hidden stash. Humble beginnings, a purchase of $50,000, but certainly you're in the right to be in this race. How do you see.

"It should be fun. Racing is a person to person sport jockey and horse. So I don't know that coach beheim can give them any help with that famous two three zone of his. So hidden stash is going to have to do it with the man to man defense, if you will against his rivals today, Rick Pitino's the only other college basketball coach that I can recall that has had a Kentucky Derby started before. Mike? Great to have coach behaim in attendance and part of our sport here this afternoon. Still to come the story of a Hall of Fame trainer looking to take a bit of a different route to his first Derby win, plus conversations with trainer Brad Cox and Hall of Fame trainers Steve asthma, but up next will tell you the story of the horse, nobody wanted who very well could find himself draped in roses later today. You're listening to exclusive coverage of the 147th Kentucky Derby on HR RN, presented by twin spires. Hall of Fame nominated trainer Doug O'Neill is going to be looking for a third Kentucky Derby victory later this afternoon and in just four days he will find out if his plaque will be forever enshrined in Saratoga Springs, New York, but for the moment, his focus is on a talented coal to as you'll hear continues to exceed all expectations. It's safe to say hot rod Charlie enters The Kentucky Derby on the upswing. This is not surprising as the son of oxbow has flown under the radar his whole life and repeatedly rewarded his fans while proving the naysayers wrong. As the popular heartland song intimates, let's talk agents, Sean and bob felled loved him first. It's the story bob loves to tell. Sean and I work every sale in North America the major circuits and we're always looking for something whether it's for a client or for ourselves, but we went to the February sale and we really liked this call. And he was an ox bow, which not the most popular side out there right now. And we just decided we buy it and maybe we can hook it or maybe syndicate it down the road just too nice not to have. So we went after him. I think our limit was 20. Can we end up getting him for 17? And the rest is history. I mean, he just really developed. But he left he wasn't that popular. The strong on the phone has started texting everybody he knew basically in the business saying, hey, it's called awesome and you should really look at them and Dennis O'Neill responded and likely saw called Sean and talked about the colts and went after him. And hot rod Charlie was his kind of prospect. Yeah, I got a call from Shawn fell. That's the effect saying that he had a half tomatoes when I was all excited about that. And then he said by Oxford, and I was like, oh, and can you say that was kind of like as far as people look at him and would you please take a look at them and you sent me a couple of videos and that report and all that stuff and I was immediately intrigued like my kind of horse was not a great solid kind of like flower alley which I'll have another, but a really good looking horse and obviously sound and I love the bottom side and a half totally was kind of curious to what he thought he was going to get and we're thought he was 60 or 80,000. I was like, wow, you know, this is definitely worth taking a shot at. And it all came together. I think it ended up paying one ten four, and was really, really excited and Greg jumped right in and if you jumped in and I mean, everybody was really excited about getting in and bill's trial. So it's a great group of guys and hopefully it.

"kentucky derby" Discussed on WGN Radio

"Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby. It's confusing. I know and we talked to any old check about this yesterday. We're talking Ron Majors today. Ron Majors, of course, very famously, a television legend here in Chicago and the Midwest and the West Coast and anywhere he has every word. People still talk about right majors. But more importantly, he is a horseman of great renown. He's known all over the horse industry. Is one of the most familiar faces on the track when you go down and the workouts in the morning and he's there, and he's got his Guys bear Bryant hat on and he's got it. He's got his binoculars and he's talking and horse two people down there, and I don't even understand what goes on. But that's what it is. Okay. So tomorrow there is an absolute stone Cold Grove favorite for this. It is the law which is going off in 4 to 5. And what do we say about anything to five? No man alive could survive anything. Right? So what would you suggest to people who want to put a few bucks on this? Well, it's very, very difficult. Here's a horse who, Ah, you know, in an ordinary year, we could be looking at American Pharaoh or justify or, you know we could be looking at a horse would have captured America's attention. But in this upside down year where there weren't gonna be any racing for a while, and then there was racing without fans, and then they rearrange the order of everything. So we've already run the Belmont that instead of being a mile and a half it was a violent and ate. So everybody says, Well, the triple Crown doesn't really count. Now, all of a sudden September and instead of running the Derby in May. We're running the Derby now, so everything's upside down and all I can say is yes, there is a huge favor. He's a deservedly Good. Course this horse if you just want it the distance a mile in eight. He's already run that distance. Two seconds faster than any other horse in the race. That's 10 Lakes in racing. So this is a horse who supposed to just run often win, But We tell you why that may not happen. Within the last hour, they ran the girl's version of the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, there were two or three horses, including an overwhelming favorite that everybody was talking about. And guess what. 15 the one shot named Shi. There's the Devil jumped up and ran a record time and pay $32 to win and is already shocked the horse world. So, folks It's a horse race. See name pick a number. Yeah, she dares the devil. Okay, so I like that. And I understand. There are rumors like that are about Jay Cutler that she dares the devil is romantically involved with is the law will get into that next segment. Okay, Rod majors. My question for you then is okay, because I mean, there are so many longshots here, you know so many horses, throwing their hooves into the ring groups into the ring. If you could not bet on tis the law For some reason, you just couldn't Who's your next pick out of the hole. But everybody's gonna be talking about the honor AP and authentic. Those are going to be the three top horses to the law, Honor AP and authentic. Those horses will be 3 to 55 wanted 8 to 1. After that, it jumps up to about 15 the one and there's a horse in the 10 holding 1000 words. They paid a million dollars for now, Remember when this race is running made, these horses haven't had very many races. Now that it's running September has been a bunch of races. Some of these horses have run against each other, authentic and honor AP have already taken turns beating each other. One was first once, while the other the second the next time the other one was first. On the other one second 1000 words has already beaten honor. AP In the previous raids and authentic is going off at 8 to 1. But 1000 words just lost by only knows two authentic and he's the one So it's just in terms of sheer value. I would take a 15 to 1 in 20 to 1. I take 1000 words and New York traffic and taking ever those would be my be my too long shots. This is Ron's bookie keeps calling him on his phone isn't listening to us. The great any old check was also hot on this enforceable. Course, which is the number three horse forcible argument there. Several horses. You could make an argument for if you're trying to get around the enforceable by a great sire named Tap it. And, uh and he ran good at the start of this year. He's tailed off a little bit in the last few races, and I'll tell you what any old Czech is a way better handicapper than leave, But I wouldn't be using enforceable. I like that 1000 words to a notice from that. Bob Baffert is the trainer right? And he's that guy who's got that silver hair and those tinted shades. Even though they're not gonna allow a crowd, he'll still be there, right? Like the time we will be very noticeable cameras love him. I on that silver fox hair, and I mean, he looks looks like he sweats money, right? He didn't and he smells good. He's the only guy at the track. That smells good, right? Even though the horse is kind of like human nuzzle in, so I sometimes like to look at that two rhyming that guy's in winter, right? Yeah, he is absolutely winner. Let me tell you one other thing about the big favorite is the law If you're looking for a reason to go around to the law and make a little money Says the law is in the 17 post. No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from the 17 Post. Way outside, way, way out there, well running, but But now you hold on a second. And let's talk a little bit about that, because I think that might confuse people. Can you hold on one second? Come back on the other side. Then we're talking about Godfather 32, because there's Ron has thoughts on that to his handicap in that for us Hold on Rod majors. We're talking about the Kentucky Derby. Richard Roper is here. The honorable wagon is out and gender Salvo's got traffic.

"Kentucky Derby tomorrow We'll get into it, but I need I need some Sam Spear on the great game of baseball. Bia's Sam, of course, has done it all he worked for, you know closely with the Oakland A's through the years, Paulie, don't you know what would host Joe DiMaggio out of Golden Gate Fields? Don't you? Beautiful? But Sam, you and I haven't been very keenly observing the new Farhaan Gabe Kapler regime here, and you and I were skeptical early on when the defense was a mess, and the lineups seemed jumbled. Sam. How do we explain this recent spate of success for Gabe can never won a number one. The defense's improved with belt and Crawford play more regularly and the lineup being a more regular lineup and go out and play whatever position you want to play today. So it's improved from stability standpoint, however. It is not improved enough. Beat the better teams as proven with the 6 to 1 lead on a ball hit first base. It should have been a potential double play on a ball hit to the outfield that he has Mrs judged. So the defense is still lacking Ah, playoff caliber. The offense. They have to be commended in the job they've done with the hitters and whether it's just because it's not just the ballpark. They're scoring, you know, 22 more runs at home this year than last year. But if you remember The Giants won three championships. With not scoring a lot of rents. They were one with pitching. And they won with defense. But the thing that's lacking in the giant's right now is the bullpen and they should have gone out and tried to strengthen the bullpen. You want Another side really Being did make a move because he needed more starting pitching, and he went and got a left hander from Texas. It would have been good for the Giants to try to get somebody to solidify Doble pen, but it is more entertaining. Assed faras. The fact that they're on base, no running, They're getting doubles and triples and home runs And and so that's more entertaining. But pitching of the bullpen and the mediocre defense when you play good teams. Now they're not going to be playing good teams for the next few Siri's, But when you play the Dodgers and you play the better teams over 500, they're going to have to play. They can afford to give up four outs. Yeah, This is all true. The Wilmer Flores. You're kind of inside baseball because the janitor of 6 to 1, and it's the ground ball to first that Flores. It wasn't easy to play in the world, but he didn't make it at the time. It didn't seem like a big deal because it only made the game 6 to 2, but it's Sam astutely points out. That's the kind of stuff that's that's not going to play winning baseball there, so there's so many different had to really be excited. Get that guy laid down a bunt. It continued that in and helped him get to see That was pretty good. Now I do question Baseball in the fact that they are playing a different game by the rules number one. It took two months to negotiate a deal all about money and nobody from the commissioner to the owners. To the players cared about the integrity of the game. Putting a man on second base seven ending double headers. Are we gonna play NFL football and it's only eight yards in the first down. Are they playing different rules and hockey or basketball for the biopsy? Yeah, no, no. So that was terrible. They sold out just on the money deal and wasting two months to negotiate a contract cost him delay in getting ready for the season. And then we end up with these injuries to the pictures. However, I'll be well listening the Giants it's great drama and you got Ah, all the different things that go into each game, and it's very exciting. Molly. How about Sam Spear? Just putting it in a way you and I never even thought of hates first and ate. All right. Get your 10 yards like a about this. Oh, it's three quarters. We want to send you home, right? Right. So I'm with you, Sam. It's ah, It's there's so many different ways to Ah, toe. Look at these. These Do you? I don't know. Is that any of them that you're willing to accept? I hate the runner on second. Maybe I could buy After the 12th inning. You do it. Well, I never forget the game. I was that one night and the guy came on the P A. And he said A very boat for a salsa later or leave promptly at midnight, and neither team could get a guy to second base. Right. So for the ferry crowd will put one on 2nd 12 in terms of the D H in the national exam. Now I know you. You know, you've been an American League guy for years and years, working with the A's and following the ace so closely in your East Bay, a childhood But just, you know, Thiss th in the National League. Listen, I know I am. I am a pierced and I am not a fan of the D A JJ in the National League, and I think it helped identify the difference between the two leagues and the problem, Wass Baby. These pictures. They don't practice running. They don't practice sitting. We don't want him to get hurt to stand up there, strike out and just don't get hurt, So I disagree. I think they should civilization keep the d H. But I understand it's history and I also concerned That they're gonna have the guy at second base to start campaigning because all you have to do is hit a ground ball. The second base, he lose the third, he hit a fly ball to right field. He scores and you win the game. The guy Harlan Garcia for the Giants came in one time and got a 123 inning and lost the darn game. I mean, that's just it didn't didn't didn't make any sense. So hey, Sam, while we have us so Vin Scully Just made his debut on Twitter this week, which is unbelievable. And there's a whole nother thing. We didn't talk about Polly Scopes and I were riffing on our little thing with Marcus, where we look for sound about who's going to be the first Twitter a hold of fire on Vin Scully and I don't know, but anyway, one of the things he said in his first post his second post, Sam Is that Tom Seaver was the greatest right handed pitcher He ever saw the hell of a statement. He saw Bob Gibson. You know, he saw Roger Clemens. Pragmatics. But, Sam, you know this Tom Seaver passing had to affect you given it was kind of, you know, you saw his entire career. Yes, And also I loved his style of pitching the drop down Ah, power pitching the power in the legs. I love the way that it's just amazing that the match could mishandle the situation that he ever left the Mets that he should have been a met for lifetime. But anyway, Tom Seaver was such a quality person and everybody talked to He always left the impression that you felt fun. Lee up the guy not on ly I'd admire of this pitching but fondly of the person He was really just an extraordinary person on and off the field. And those records that you read yesterday, including how he pushed down the stretch. Not even allowing to guide a second base in the clutch in the clutch..

"I've stated a days in Happy Valley 350 bucks and the bed was still hard, but the point was that the way they make their money, and so those guys plus the restaurant's plus Transportation. It's about $140 Million, and you take state college, which by the way, has some extra social issues because you know they're recovering from Sandusky and the the scandals. And they need to get back to some regularity. I think they've recovered. But how about Gainesville? How about Tuscaloosa? How about Auburn, Alabama? How about Steak college? Ah, Texas. On and on and on and on, and you know it, So it's a good example and a good issue. That's one that at least now the pact 12 towns in the big 10 towns are going to have to deal with, um They just came out with the official statement this week that they're going to be no fans of the Kentucky Derby Day pit. They pushed it back from May to September. NI hope that they'd be able to get it open for at least a partial crowd. That's not going to be the case. We know they're not going to be any fans of the Masters. We know the individual impact of the sports team sports football, basketball, hockey baseball and playing in bubbles in the light. But for these sports that are big for one day, a year or four days for the Masters an entire weekend. How much does not having fans at these events actually cost? Those specific event. Well, so the announcement tomorrow. By the way, the Kentucky Derby Committee has decided not even to allow horses. Big O, and that's an issue. That's an issue and another issue. Farmer's Almanac says it's going to be about six or eight inches of snow in Augusta in November. So alright those air goes to one liners. We've overused, but everybody understands support have the events. The bottom line is the events with no fans are good TV events, and what they've done is they've secured the television revenue. It covers their basic dollars, which is very important. But the small towns the loot, not really small, But Louisville in Augusta will not have the economic impact. The master's committee is very good at not talking about what the numbers are, but you know the secondary market. Your master's badges. There's never been a human being that's actually paid face value for a master's ticket. It's really a master's ticket and also the same thing with the, uh, the hospitality. Areas that are built as well as some of the hotels. They're built. They're built on the backs of one week a year, right? And so what? You going to do it? If you look at the press release very carefully, and I know some of the committee members well, and I talked to them. They said no members and no guests and the reason he said no guesses because patrons and guests and because the, uh the guests are are from all over the world. And it's going to be very hard to get into this country. Unfortunately, even in November, we think so. They are probably in their way doing the right thing, even though they're taking peed on it. And they can't wait till April. They've had some discussions and I've heard some about move next year's Masters back. God, no, man, I hope I hope we're locked down until what? Let's say December. Maybe I don't know if you want to think about it. But then we get back to normal, which meet Master's next April, And in the meantime, CBS is paying regular freight and that's really good. And I can't wait to see the Masters with no crowds. You know, I've been watching the Northern trust I'm here in Connecticut. I was gonna go to the final round. But I don't want to see Dustin Johnson run away with it. 26 under 59 60. I don't care. It's good golf, and it's now fans and I don't care. And looked pretty good on TV. Doesn't Johnson surely did Ricardo? I guess sports business analyst he would have said on CBS portrayed Eo. You mentioned secondary market for something like the Masters and or the Kentucky Derby of fact, your business and you are for the lack of a better word. They don't call this anymore. But when I was a kid, you went to a ticket scalper. They got tickets. And then they would charge you an inflated rate. It was a must see event and the Kentucky Derby and the masses are certainly two of those for those who are holding their tickets. Just a flat out lost there. They're going to be able to get refunded face value, but they probably paid above face value when they were going trying to sell it to someone else above that value. How big losses it for those people in that business? Here's the irony. You know, it's scalpers with a small s. You're not supposed to mention it. But you know, StubHub and razor and all of those companies are legitimized because they have deals with the leaks their sponsors their partners. But when you don't have fans, you don't have tickets and there's nothing they can do to recover this year and they're not going to stick their folks with no refunds. If they do they be out of business. So ultimately everything gets rolled back a year. And so if you take the short version, you would say are two years, three years out. You recoup your money in your three year four because everything gets rolled out. At the end of the day. It doesn't matter how many years it is. You've lost a year of revenues, so suck it up and deal with it. All right. An interesting tidbit. God couple paragraphs on your Ah, What Two watch list this week on sports business was about endorsements for the players in college football. Not this year, But starting next year, there's a chance that they could make some money on their likeness and the like, and being able to earn money. Via social media. I'll be honest with you, Tiger. Yeah, guide. I'm sorry. Go ahead. I just going to say I'm on Twitter. But I'm not an influencer. I don't understand the whole be able to generate revenue from social media. How can a potential college student to his top in line guy and has a ton of followers or whatever else? How did they turn that? Into profit. How old are you? By the way, you're.
