Medina Spirit Will Compete in Preakness After Passing Drug Tests

"That Medina spirit the winner of the Kentucky Derby, is cleared to race and Saturday's Preakness Stakes after the Kentucky Derby where Medina Spirit one a drug test revealed a therapeutic in Medina Spirits System, which is banned on race day. Fame's trainer Bob Baffert, who trained Medina Spirit revealed that the horse tested positive. Elevated levels of beta methods own. Baffert released a statement on May 11 saying that Medina Spirit had been treated for a skin condition with an ointment that contained the substance. Quote Medina Spirit earned his Kentucky Derby win and my far masala gist, sir, have told me that 21 people grams of better methods, Sone would have no effect on the outcome of the race. Baffert previously said in a statement. Medina Spirit is a deserved champion and I will continue to fight for him. After this Medina spirit went through subsequent tests that came back clean. And therefore is able to race in the Preakness. Marty and McGee host Marty Smith talked on SportsCenter with El Duncan about the situation and also how Baffert is essentially battling himself in this race when it comes to the Triple Crown. I've been texting all week long with Bob Baffert Ale back and forth. I did reach out to him after this ruling came down, asked him if he had any comment. And he said, Right now he feels like it's best to keep his comments to himself. The less he says, the better. Certainly I respect that now because concert tour and Medina spirit are now eligible for the Preakness. That means Baffert is now racing against himself for Triple Crown history, of course, since he trains both of those horses if concert tour were to win the Preakness here on Saturday that eliminates Medina spirit from a Triple Crown opportunity earlier this week, I had the opportunity to talk with Jimmy Barnes about that. Who's here? Training the horses on Baffert's behalf, and I asked him What's it like for one horse to be racing against another one. A Triple Crown is on the line, he said, Man, It's not a challenge it all. It's

"How does he go from this order. Town ranch guy to this racing aristocrat atop the sport of kings the public face of a sport full of like actual aristocrats. It's interesting. I mean a lot of horse. Trainer's i mean this isn't surprising but they're not people people like they're a lot more comfortable around. The animals baffert is the rare guy who is charismatic. Who can deal with the horses but also deal with the owners. I mean the ven diagram of people who could manage needy billionaires and needy thoroughbred horses very very small and so he rose to the top of this profession because he can do both part of what the client's pain four is the bob baffert experience from your time around backwards right. Something that i'm curious about is just how much hands on time he spends with any given horse and obviously in medina spirits case. This is a derby winning horse. But what's your sense of. What baffert is actually involved. With on the micro i mean. I think he's the ceo. I mean i think he's nick sabin he goes into recruits house to get them and then he talks to the team before games but in terms of actual instruction. It's the position coach. I mean i think that's a useful. Analogue i don't know what's more damaging to bob that there was a positive drug test or that he might not have touched this horse at all. Do you know what i mean again. I don't know the answer to that. Like i don't know what's more damaging to his business that either. He did this or that. He didn't and didn't know you know i'm not sure which is worse for him. Frankly but this is an enormous operation. I mean the correct way to look bob baffert is as ceo while the idea right. That horse racing is at this particular moment a an inflection point. Maybe where there is this microscope. Being applied to a sport will show all sorts of things that people find disturbing. How would you summarize where horse racing is right now in terms of all of this happening at this particular moment i mean horse racing was born in and four in america. That frankly doesn't really exist anymore. I mean one of the things we talked about with. The bloodlines podcast. And then when you and i talked after it came out was that horse racing is for people who see animals as livestock and more and more. We are a country where people see animals as pets. So all of these attempts to treat the horses as if they are olympic sprinters is apnea one of those things where you have two groups of people looking at the same animals in two very different ways and those discrepancies right. The notion that the world of horse racing was feeling misunderstood. And then now further maligned by this drug test in all of this soap opera. Coming out of the kentucky derby it all led to baffert invoking cancel culture as his personal situation is concerned we live in a different world. Now this this america's different and this was like a chanson culture kind of a thing so they're reviewing it. I've so leaving aside the political usage of that term and how this doesn't really make sense on that level at all right. His entire sport is seemingly feeling pretty desperate feeling threatened feeling like they might get canceled in assets. Did he mean this more specifically. What was your understanding of it. What i think he was referring to was the speed. With which churchill downs an organization that bob baffert his made lots of money over the years. How quick they were to sort of turn on him. The move and pr now is just to end the new cycle and to distance yourself and i think he was probably surprised at the speed at which people he has made. A lot of money ran from him. I think that's probably what he meant. But when he invoked cancel culture. i mean. it's one of those phrases that like is almost been totally stripped of meaning. Yes because it is now political football. Well i if felt right now. He was on the outside of this world that he was once squarely the son of the center of that solar system. Now like looking in shutout and as much as there is that political implication my takeaway was like. Oh this is a guy who is feeling kind of desperate in a way. That i didn't really ever think of him as such or it's interesting when you put it that way. He still is the kid who grew up on the border town ranch. And just because he works for people with hundreds of millions and billions of dollars doesn't mean that they see him as an equal or that he even feels that way it even if you've won seven kentucky derby as the billionaires who run horse racing will cut you loose in a second if it means to quote the west wing picking up a not of boat speed and so it must've been interesting for bob baffert to realize that this is the sport of kings. And you're not the king while reminds me right the last time we talked. You had this interview with bob baffert where he was feeling quite existential at that point. What do you remember about what he told you. And how that moment connects to what we're discussing today. In the wake of all of the horse deaths around the country but particularly santa anita bob was quoted in a lot of those stories. Because he's the only person that you know mainstream people have ever heard of and it occurred to him that not only his life's work but the to which he had devoted his life could be going away now everywhere i go you know like restaurants or whatever and people. They go bob. But the hell's going on out there. It just came in like a cloud over us. You know. I think this is the first time that this could all go away. His biggest concern for years was just when the next big race and i left his barn feeling like there was someone contemplating the end of an entire world. Who was really thinking about what could be lost and how quickly it could be lost. And i think some of what. Bob probably feels is an entire career that he is now at the end of suddenly feeling like the narrative of it is up for grabs.

Medina Spirits Kentucky Derby Drama, Explained

"Matt i know very little about horse racing so i'm so glad you're joining me today. Thank you. I appreciate kamya. Matt hegarty is covered horse for more than twenty years and he reports on the macintosh industry for the daily racing form. So i know that the preakness is tomorrow matt. I know that it's the second race into the triple crown. And i know that medina the horse that won the kentucky derby tested positive in a drug test after that win but before you walk us through exactly what happened there. How would you describe the drama in the sport that you cover right now. This is pretty unprecedented. We haven't had a derby positive in horse racing since nineteen sixty sixty when you start talking about drugs in horse racing it. It aims it up to the next level you know we've had drug positives and being debated in the past the the most important ones that have happened in acid involved. in the same trainer bob baffert. This is a continuation of a pattern. And i think. That's what's causing a lot of the uproar that this wasn't a trainer who got caught up in some sort of mix up with therapeutic medication. It's trainer who is at the top of the game hall of fame member. A person who has one more derbies eighty percent history as long as on stands and he has a pattern of being sloppy in his barn operations. And it's hard to believe that you could be sloppy going into the most important race on the calendar.

"But mark. Cassie is a master. I'm mean that like when you really studied the amount of training jobs he's done just look at classic empire that looked like a pain in the butt to train never wanted to work. He was quirky. Somehow he got into the derby even with a back pain. And you also the freight this web you know. And i look at helium and i go. This is so unconventional. What you're doing. Which is basically this is. The first started his three-year-old year. He wins tampa. And then you're gonna train up here but marks the kind of guy. I don't think this could win it. But like i could see him hitting the super or the try and you're like how did helium you do that. But that's like a mark job. What do you think on that. I mean it just as wild like okay. That's the weird you know. No i think. I honestly don't is it. It's like it's like a helium or a or hidden stash or like a soup and sandwich or it's one of those funky horses right that you know makes no sense but kind of make sense at the same time they get up. I guide have no i. I've news when he got. He gave me news earlier. Like we're gonna get kinda funky in some of these trysofi derby like we are like. There's gonna be some weird horses. We're gonna throw in there. Because i feel like it's going to be that way. I would be utterly shocked if helium does anything in this race. Like fall out of my seat. That i'm sitting when i watched this race shot with all over him. Aaron i'm with you hold on hold on just don't seem crazy. 'cause i know but here's my point on it. I don't some of these trainers. I watched what they're doing. Why on earth are you starting your horst derby. Why on earth. And i think that about this guy with this move but it's mark cassie and i know he actually knows how to train a horse and i'm like so you know what you're doing is crazy. What are you seeing that we're not seeing. There's no reason to started me. So that's where i'm coming from like. Maybe you can help me if it wasn't cathy. If you like the guys idiot but he's he's not in. It's a weird training job. Select you have to take on white. Been starting here because he qualified for the kentucky. Derby is best. I mean honestly. I'm not trying to be an asshole. That's just that's affected me. Giving him too much credit maybe owned him and he won the tip of a derby. It wouldn't be marked kassy's decision to run in the kentucky derby aired respect i. I can't argue with down the. Let's get you another horse. That i think is going to be a little bit of a price. Dr tang of our good friend of the show. Good friend of magic. Mike as well dr tang. He mentioned earlier that You beat Hang on hang on. I didn't like it Do you think man delun could be under radar horse. He's thirty three to one offshore Horse that we haven't really talked about On on this on this but you know a horse that you know. here's the thing about. This makes him super interesting. In my opinion is that once star. He's one good. Start away from being top. Two top three choice in the kentucky derby easily in now is kind of like. We've gone fifty eight minutes on this chat on this feed without mentioning his name really so like. That's kind of the point. I'm trying to make here you know. He's a horse that was turning up in the direction. And then on this really no reason why. Or how even brad cox like. I don't know what the hell happened so mandolin. Where are you guys staying on him. I listen if you can get him at thirty three to one take him. Because it's just it's like why would then. That's just value because my fear with mandolin is he's looking so good leading up to the race he he's you know he's got brad cox arm inside. He has a flashy pedigree. He has a flashy. You know owner. He's got all kinds of things. I'm afraid he's gonna get a bit over beth at. He was one after the louisiana derby. You kinda thought we'll get thirty two one on him on derby day and then all the other races sucked basically except for one or two of them and now he's back in play like i think he could be like twelve to one fifteen to one. I know it's still be price. But i would want a little more on him. I think he's you need to use. I don't think he's wanting to necessarily back to win. Like twelve to one but if you can get thirty three two one go ahead. Yeah that's the thing like there's going to be so much that goes into the value aspect of this on. You know that the the the the hour whatever. It is fifty minutes that go in between the last race in the or the derby like that's going to be critical how these horses are being bad because so many value or non value. That goes into this. I feel like i'm on fans of so many horses. But if you're gonna give me mandolin at twenty one or fifteen to one. I'll sign up for that you know. But if he's ten twelve. The one. I don't know you know so i i'm with you like he's always. He's all about the price on as you can get a thirty three to one doctor tang. I'm with you sign up. Sign me up for that. One will the other thing you've got to consider mandolin to is if you look at kat river who just ran horribly that race before he came in second just last race i mean he was like fifth there. So you know. Look cox's i do expect cox to have this horse ready to run and i do remember hearing from the magic mike show people talking about why beane money and why they drafted him. They heard inside info that like the connections. Were super super high on mandolin to me. Their derby horse all year at the owners. So i mean you know. I mean the guy. They're amazing enron well but he got it that you know because he won you know you won the risen star. They got on there You know he's been good work and really well at churchill downs. Obviously he's won a race there. So it's like jerry that's a big angle to run well in that track man. I mean seriously. That is something to be said. You don't have to even a great horse if you loved track. I mean blame loved that track in yatta cam there and you know it is difference. Yeah i love that angle. And i i love to see how horses i love to see. The final works at you know. Just stay wrong track every day but like the final really final series work of or going into dougie derby. I love seeing that. And i love seeing that angle and see how they look and see you know. I think you know when when hot rod charlie went into the into the into the louisiana derby it was like damn halterneck. I'd take from mealy. After i saw that work like kylie. He's gonna run you as i don't know if he's gonna win because they don't know how good he is. He's gonna run big in that race because look how he's working so you can get get good. Guess watching these horses work isn't that you never knows twenty horsfield where things happen the kentucky derby but you kind of get an idea of which is going to be loaded in which ones on if you watch a work again. It's not science but.

"At the end of the day I think with. More speed presences for recall runs just fine wins. There is April record that was that was a little her flexing while the rest did set up better for recall it her. The newspaper record we seen before at two we we know she a lot better than that so. Really. I've been I've been hopeful she could she contending race like the mile but actually I don't really know where she goes and moving onto probably. The it's very hard on a Kentucky Derby weekend to say the Kentucky Derby was not the best race on a particular card but this high to be the best race of last weekend the race of the week and very likely could be the race of the month in one of the races of the year and this race definitely did not deserve a loser. If you have not seen this race already I, absolutely encourage you to go back and watch it. This was purely entertaining horse race Sarah the empress rent absolutely too good to lose here bells the one terrific horse in her own, right. I have liked her in several angles where you know she wasn't as long a shot as she would have been in a race like the winning colors, but definitely shoes out I some the horses in the odds board here she ran a really good race for me and like we mentioned or like I mentioned excuse me a to good to. This did not deserve loser classic example race like this surrogate empress ran freakishly fast. She never should have been able to get away with the the fraction that she was able to get away with and it wasn't like that she tired at all in this race. You know she just got beat on the spot and sometimes that happens and you know that's a perfect example. Tough luck you get beat a nose. Race but no disrespect for Sarah getting efforts coming out of it. Great. Run by bells the want to be able to close up in a race like this but Sarah the empress I if you're a horse, if you're a fan of a horse, it's not Sarah Getting empress going into the fillion mayor sprint you should be concerned because you know if she can survive that kind of that kind of fractions. Than, I don't know what she can't do going into the Breeders Cup. She's definitely very dangerous and. I would be hard pressed to not safe. You put me on the spot right now surrogate efforts may just be the Horse I take the in affiliate mayor sprint..

"I sit there and watch the sunrise. They were the track ready for the Derby horses to practice, and it was just a very odd thing to be at a totally empty churchill downs in the week of the Kentucky Derby and just being empty and silent. You mentioned obviously no one in the grandstands all the preparations seem different. Everything is upside down. But that's the frontside. What was the back side of the track like? I. Should say <Speech_Female> did make the decision <Speech_Male> to extend the woodwork. <Speech_Female> Back out to <Speech_Female> a mile and a quarter, <Speech_Male> a distance word hasn't <Speech_Male> been for a number <Speech_Female> of years but <Speech_Female> <hes> you know did have some <Speech_Female> very memorable running's <Speech_Female> a mile and a quarter <Speech_Male> specifically most <Speech_Female> memorable alysheba <Speech_Male> in a very <Speech_Female> loaded nineteen eighty <Speech_Female> woodward stakes <Speech_Female> set a track <Speech_Female> record in that <Speech_Female> Very good performance. <Speech_Male> If you've never seen that race <Speech_Male> highly encourage <Speech_Male> you go watch it. <Speech_Male> There's definitely <Speech_Male> not any ALYSHEBA <Speech_Male> are forty niners <Speech_Male> in this race, but <Speech_Male> we do have tacitus <Speech_Male> who <Speech_Female> is coming to race. <Speech_Male> It's shaping <Speech_Male> very similar <Speech_Male> to the suburban <Speech_Female> handicap earlier <Speech_Female> this year <Speech_Female> at Belmont. <Speech_Female> Moretti's <Speech_Female> back in this race <Speech_Male> in my point that <Speech_Male> I made with Moretti back. <Speech_Male> At <Speech_Male> the suburban still stands <Speech_Female> I think that this horse <Speech_Female> needs a longer <Speech_Female> than ten furlongs. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Female> Three-quarter last <Speech_Female> time the bird stone <Speech_Female> definitely <Speech_Female> thinking needs longer <Speech_Female> <hes> in. <Speech_Female> This is just another race where <Speech_Female> tacitus <Speech_Female> on class <Speech_Male> towers over this <Speech_Male> field you know <Speech_Male> obviously, tacitus <Speech_Male> has been very weird <Speech_Male> in his career, <Speech_Male> but I've always been a person <Speech_Male> who picks tacitus <Speech_Female> <hes> every single <Speech_Female> race regardless, I'm <Speech_Female> going to go down but the ship <Speech_Male> again and I <Speech_Male> don't think I'm going down with the <Speech_Female> ship I. Think it's <Speech_Male> fairly easy to <Speech_Male> pick tacit as in here <Speech_Male> if he doesn't <Speech_Male> win this race, <Speech_Male> I have very, <Speech_Male> very <SpeakerChange> good reasons <Speech_Male> to be concerned. <Speech_Music_Male> Granting <Speech_Music_Male> up I'm doing <Speech_Music_Male> a preview of this <Speech_Music_Male> over on Youtube. So <Speech_Music_Male> you can get my my <Speech_Music_Male> full thoughts there <Speech_Music_Male> on this <Speech_Music_Male> this Jalen. Yeah <Speech_Music_Male> it's a little disappointing but. <Speech_Music_Male> I don't <Speech_Music_Male> think it's I mean it's <Speech_Music_Male> obviously probably <Speech_Music_Male> one of the weakest would <Speech_Music_Male> were killed history, <Speech_Music_Male> but it's <Speech_Music_Male> still a fundraiser <Speech_Music_Male> at the end of the day. I <Speech_Music_Male> think tasks this is <Speech_Music_Male> a lovable was at <Speech_Music_Male> one point for <Speech_Music_Male> a streak of time a lovable <Speech_Music_Male> loser. <Speech_Music_Male> I just really liked his <Speech_Music_Male> he get this this <Speech_Music_Male> great one when it would be <Speech_Music_Male> a lot of fun I I don't <Speech_Music_Male> think that I think that probably <Speech_Music_Male> gives away my topic <Speech_Music_Male> I have some <Speech_Music_Male> some good ideas <Speech_Music_Male> underneath that I love <Speech_Music_Male> for everybody. <SpeakerChange> Go check <Speech_Female> out run youtube. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> And with all that being <Speech_Female> said, like we mentioned, <Speech_Male> we've got a ton of stuff <Speech_Male> over on youtube this <Speech_Female> week our friend <Speech_Female> J. did <Silence> join us <hes> earlier. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Male> Today <Speech_Female> today being Wednesday. <Speech_Male> So that's <Speech_Male> out on Youtube we <Speech_Male> got a ton of previews out <Speech_Female> there. We ultimately did decided <Speech_Female> to approve the pet <Speech_Female> day mile. <Speech_Female> So you can go get <Speech_Female> my bombs away picks <Speech_Female> in that <Speech_Female> race if you really trust <Speech_Female> me after taking <Speech_Female> Shash Shaked me up. <Speech_Male> But aside from <Speech_Male> that for something by today <Speech_Male> if you play any <Speech_Male> of the races this weekend. "Away the best in his. And the next year is we're going to get to is the agreed to Dandy usually run for the travers but obviously with pandemic this year time the resistance been shifted this good example of you know what the Pat Day mile has been in past years at the pet day mile this year turned into a really deep race of a Lotta horses that have been sprinting past trying to go one term we already talked about that a Lot of these horses are kind of horses that may have been had Kentucky Derby on their radar. Obviously, Dr Post pulled out of the Kentucky Derby to run in this race and you know there's some other interesting horses in here. You've got first line and happy who are coming out of Medan wins and then you've also got Celtic striker and Mr. Guide who Are Past horses that you know in the case of Celtic striker was a stakes winner in the case of mystic guy he was favored in the Peter Pan last out was beaten by two horses who I think are pretty talented. Car Car would have been live in the Kentucky Derby and Country Grammar who's not here I think has been potential to be you know another? Level stakes when are higher than a great three. So that was a good field who's beaten in front of I also really like Hayes uses team in this race, I like his last a couple of efforts he was beaten by. If you listen to the Kentucky Derby preview if you've had not. Said enough already go check that out. He was beaten by. Tinian. In. In his allowance race at Gulfstream earlier this year and then Also this year was fourth in the Haskell and then most recently second behind pneumatic who is going to be live in the preakness in the Pegasus stakes amendment. So I think there's a lot to like about he's uses team ultimately, I'm going to go with Mr Guide here give him a lot. Of Credit for the back class that he has in in the Peter Pan which feels really weird to say the Peter Pan at Saratoga. But ultimately, I'm going go with him on top like I mentioned Dr Posts Underneath I'm also going to take a shot with his team. Put Him for third in here to get a good saw top three in this race..

"Talented racehorse. Moving onto the PAT. Day Mile. This is kind of you know usually been the the undercard race for the Kentucky Derby. A lot of horses that didn't necessarily make the Derby ended up in this race but this is a race where a lot of horses that are coming out of the seven. Furlong. Allen Jerkin Sakes earlier this year. So this is kind of a bit of a preview of the Breeders Cup. Cook what could be the Breeder's Cup sprint? There are some you know good sprint level horses no parole and ECO town are both grade one winners sprinting but I'm actually GonNa, take a pass on both of those and I'm GonNa go with tap it to win on top and I've got a couple reasons for why like it's went on top. You can make the case in certainly I will that he was coming on in the forego that's that race a mile I make a very good case that he wins that He does have a win going a mile and a sixteenth that was in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park that was a really nice win, and that's what kind of propelled him into the Belmont stakes. He ran a credible fifth beaten by four really good horses that are all either live in the Kentucky Derby in the case of Max player. Or Tisza law who's the overwhelming favourite pneumatic who's going to be live in the preakness and Dr Post is GonNa be one of the favorites for the Jim Dandy which will get to later underneath I. Really Really Liked Shasha shake me up to be second and that's a bit of a bombs away pick but I'm GONNA own it right here. Shush shaking up has some really bad rate bad efforts in stakes races six, hundred, seventeen, the risen star. But he does have on his debut won by five and a half links going seven furlongs at Churchill most most recently at Churchill, in A. Six Furlong Allowance race granted it was six, but it was a churchill he was beaten four and a half links well-beaten but he was beaten by Ceesay rocket who I had a lot of Nice things to say about. See Rockets agreed to winter. Not, a bad effort for him to be second in that race and he did also have a nice win earlier this year at Oaklawn. Park. So bit of a bombs away pig bit of a kind of out there angle with Shasha, shake me up but I'm GONNA put it out there just because I I don't know that it's going to happen but might as well, and for third I'm going to go rushie he likes to be consistent run third It's reasonable to expect that he'll run a good race here. I don't think he's going to run a winning after it, but I do like him underneath to to run third..

"Kid in real news that's reverse. Those makes sense underneath wide open but I really. I. Really Like my top thing I know it's not. Uncommon hundred eight on top I really do like Willie. And moving onto Saturday the first of several graded stakes. There is the American turf, a mile and a sixteenth on the. Horse I really like in here is a smooth like straight. It's very weird to say that does smooth like straight beat till one of the horses going into the same cards, Kentucky Derby but that's the way things have worked out with storm. The court really liked the effort that he had. They're up for some underneath angles have. Not completely lost faith in fuel pass. I was not very thrilled with a seventh place finish in the Saratoga Derby. But I do like that he does run like to run well over Churchill downs. Stakes when they're in the autumn stakes was third in the war chant and you know like I mentioned it was discouraging seven. The everybody is a great stakes on the turf did win the Transylvania Kellen. So I, like him. Underneath I'm going to use him third and the Horse I like for second is fancy liquor. He was starting at Transylvania came back stake race at Indiana grand was second and allowance earlier this year at Churchill A, you know throw him underneath for second like I mentioned already use smooth like straight on top. Won The won the war chanted Churchill downs also smooth like straight. So definitely likes to track really like to see that liked his effort last time not lost faith in fuel pass and I'm going to you know Mike Maker you can't go wrong with Mike Maker Angle. Dotted. All and I going to go with with the my maker. I'M GONNA go with sealed pass? I. Really have so many achieve belong excuses for that Sir Derby. Intrigues while he was seven at the, it's not a huge margin it I like that he's cutting back, disinfect you like. We obviously know what he's good at. Likes, Churchill. Downs. Lot End. Up. Gingell the source, but biggest thing. Lot early speed side on in this race I mean coming from your favorites you know street and fancy liquor but also horses came Theo in sensation in of. All sources that were either first or second in her last race is so that concerns me a little I'd be like feel pass is one of ten be able to the pizzas kind of like he did in the Transylvania. To starts back in. And little bit bombs away. Underneath and I'M GONNA go with the to American Butterfly and I it's kind of weird to sail dwayne his horse grassroots because. Historically has not been. Strong on the grass that percentage is. Now, very strong but this horse. has really been knocking around running some very good races underneath in company I mean he hasn't missed a forward since and he's right after eight races since then he'd been doing good but. Really. The biggest thing is to switch to grassy viner farrow. Who Did you know me? You know I preach that American fairways grass ir he's a warfront mayor even more grasping the dam site in all honesty I would not be surprised as he accept, run Youtube. So I'm GonNa go American Butterfly with some value underneath will throw in smelled lecturing because you disagree talented racehorse. Moving onto the PAT. Day Mile. This is kind of you know usually been the the undercard race for the Kentucky Derby. A lot of horses that didn't.

"His odds. The there odds and then Tis the laws odds if he kinda follows a Mac kind of footstep. They're better than what they should be. That's what I was just about to say like it what if you? If you're sitting there and stare at five the two you know down here, bet the world if you're. Tenure like sitting there trying to say, okay why love him but then I do I play this try whenever and you're like wait we'll just stop thinking that way interest panelist shit out on on on top because why mess around with WHO has to get second third because let's be honest. It's probably more than good chance that honorary p and art collector one of two don't show up at all. And so someone crazy is gonNA, come up under second second and third and or don't worry about it just pound. Would justify was sitting there five or to whatever I bet a lot on him to win. Yeah. Because and that's was five the two. And I didn't have to worry about who came underneath. The to me that's the way you look at this raised as long as it's if he's if he's sitting there. Under. Two to one or something I think you gotta be careful. So two points that just came in on the comments, will he run on the Churchill Service? I don't think that'll be a problem but here's the thing if it sloppy that now that is a question work for him I think people will look at that to churchill loss and say, well, maybe he doesn't like Churchill there was a lot of things that happened in that race you know. He just didn't run very well he was inside horses which could be factor for sure but I don't think it was the surface per se but but rain that could be a factor maybe he hates the slot that could be the one. Yeah we don't. We don't own and they rains all the time and Kentucky on Kentucky Derby Day although this is a lot different, not the first Saturday may so we'll see but yeah, I mean academically play a factor. Okay. So you you mentioned for another question you mentioned. Playing horse that maybe with him on top and you have decided yet don't know. But the question would be like, who are you most interested in right now besides his law honor ap art collector like. That is kind of like. Starting to trend up a little bit for you. You're thinking okay. Maybe this is the Horse I might throw in on top just in case. So I'm circling horses four and five here on our chart, which is King Guillermo and Car Caro. King Guillermo I think is going to be the way over hyped tour. So that's what I'm not gonNA use and I think a lot of people that's they're going to be there answer not for me give me Car Caro I really think the source is pretty good and I. Think if he runs the same race, he ran in the travers I think he's got a shot to hit the board here at a decent price. That's one on definitely GONNA use. And I think like a In Y traffic if everybody Canada says the hell with it I think he could get third. You know I don't think he can hit the exact but I think he can get third. So those are the two kind of off the wall. Horses I'm looking at I don't lie. You know a lot of these horses I think you can throw them out I. Really don't think you're gonNA see something like dumb like normal 'cause I, just think they're bad and I I think the cream gonNA. Rise to the top and we have a lot of deep deep deep closers. Never pans out especially talking about shitty horses. against good horses like art collector antisne law honor. AP, we'll be at shouldn't be as far back. I think thousand words could could be can make a little out of the plate thousand words authentic. A thousand words is sneaky because he will get the distance just. Is he any good Kenny? Concord for third I think he probably could more could he get out and hold on for third because the closers behind him? He's actually yeah. So yeah, I definitely think he's he's one Kierra been off too long I totally agree and he though he and that's why you're saying this and why he's GonNa, take a lot of attention. He's the Wiseguy was wise guy he looks awesome on the track every time he's on the track their raving about how good he looks and what he's doing and You name it like this force is going to get attacked and the fact that the last time and oh, by the way got second last time we saw him to the doll doll is. All would one this rate you know whatever? So it's like. Why did you wait? It's been. So literally, I think you said on the why we hate your. Co. It was a thing. He wanted he he want to raise and I. think that's a fair a fair way to say. Like. How do you even know what he's GonNa do I have no idea what we'll do but I don't think I guess I should put I one thing I don't think he'll do and that's been excited for damn sure. Yeah. He I think he's a toss to. Okay. So this is a question I actually have not asked you and I am personally interested to know. Because you and I both had some heavy heavy opinions coming into the Kentucky Derby in years past. So how does your confidence in Tis? The law compared to say those years with on with the American Pharaoh or justify two of our biggest win beds of our lives we're on on American Pharaoh and justifying the Derby's nonetheless. So where do you stay like how does his laws confidence rating compared to those years? I'd say he's I'm second most confident out of. All A feral I was the most confident and then I would say Tisza law second and justify third The only reason with justify really lightly race had to beat that cursive. Apollo. That was kind enough to be like, yeah he could go out there and you know in throw a clunker I'm not going to be shot at about halfway through the race he thought. We not GONNA work. I've lost a ton of money. This is going to be really bad and somehow on what we know how but. But yeah, he he. He was a little scarier of I. I don't know if I'll ever be as confident as I was and that American Derby like I already written that office like, okay. How can we win the Belmont? I two races already one for American Pharaoh so I couldn't say I'm. Tisza laws like am that confidence level but I'm pretty confident for a number of factors. He's damned good and these other workers have shown that they are yeah I mean. I feel I. I've probably. AP. AP's definitely the one I. mean he was the one I felt most confident in which funny worse race probably of his career in but he was. Justified was out by his I. Just I just don't see how this long frankly is gonNA lose I just don't justify had a lot of competition I. thought that year to that could beat him. Were Tisza Lawn just doesn't I'm the fair by federal had good competition too. Yeah. But better than justify you then but. You know I was. Lie. But I mean obviously with just fire is like out of nowhere like just had an uneven again. Of course Chris Paul like you mentioned I mean there's a lot of stuff against them despite how good he looked whereas Tis law has got the foundation and he's been running and he's been winning and he's you know what I mean the e prepped at a mountain quarter. which is just unheard of obviously going into the Kentucky Derby Yeah anything else far as like the way you're looking at the Derby I against. When it comes to the multi, which is a good segue into kind of the undercard. But when it comes to the multi I mean, do you think the strategy here is to.

"Points during its history which really add up to basically all of its history the Kentucky Derby has been criticized for a whole range of issues in addition to the campaigns to end gambling and drinking and racing that we already discussed in more recent years the Derby has faced allegations of animal abuses both during training and in the race itself. This has been especially true after accidents and injuries have happened during or after the race in two thousand and eight for example Philly eight bells collapsed after the race have in broken both of her front ankles and she had to be euthanized. Although women were specifically invited to attend the Kentucky Derby from the very beginning with separate seating away from the bedding falling out of favor in the years after World War One the Derby has in a lot of ways. Always been a man's world. Diane crump was the first woman to ride in the Derby in nineteen seventy and. She's one of only six women jockeys in the Kentucky Derby as of two thousand sixteen women have been involved in other roles at the Kentucky Derby further back in history in nineteen o five Ellwood took the prize and was the first Kentucky Derby winner owned by a woman lasca Cornell Ellwood was also the first Derby winner bread by women who is cited everywhere as MRS J B Prather. I don't know what her actual first name is. But as of twenty sixteen no woman trainer or Jockey had ever won the Kentucky Derby and men outnumber women by far in all of these roles so today men and in particular white men dominate the Kentucky Derby seen all the way from most of the Churchill Downs Incorporated Board of directors to the jockeys riding in the race. But that wasn't the case when the Derby started although meriwether Lewis Clark. Junior and his associates and investors were white the majority of the jockeys and trainers were not in eighteen. Seventy five thirteen out of the Derby's fifteen jockeys in that race were black. As were many of the trainers when the Kentucky Derby began the people who had the most experience caring for and training horses particularly in the south where black and since the first derby took place only about a decade after the civil war and the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment Abolishing Slavery and Kentucky had been a slave state many of the men who had trained and cared for and wrote in the First Kentucky. Derby were either previously enslaved or were the children of people who had been enslaved in that first eighteen seventy five Kentucky Derby. The winning horse was aristocracies. Who set a record for speed in three year? Old Horses aristocracies trainer Ansel Williamson and his Jockey nineteen year old. Oliver Lewis were. Both black. Williamson was enslaved from birth and sold from one owner to another until being emancipated following the civil war between that first derby in nineteen. Oh Two when Jimmy Wingfield Road Alan a dale to the win which was Wingfield. Second Consecutive win. Fifteen of the twenty eight. Winning horses were ridden by black jockeys in those years between Oliver. Lewis and Jimmy wingfield other black jockeys rose to prominence in the Derby and eventually became the era's version of the sports superstar Isaac Burns. Murphy was the first jockey to win the Derby three times which he did in eighteen eighty four eighteen ninety and eighteen ninety one. He became a colossally well respected. Jackie winning forty four percent of the races he wrote in which is a record. No other jockey has topped the post civil war reconstruction officially ended in eighteen. Seventy six the year after the First Kentucky Derby Racist Jim Crow laws enforcing segregation soon followed in Eighteen. Ninety six the. Us Supreme Court ruled in Plessey Versus Ferguson. That this segregation was legal as long as the separate facilities were equal and by that point a lot of other sports had already implemented their own systems of segregation however it was not possible to quickly segregate the sport of horse racing when so much of the knowledge of how to care for a horse and ride it to a win rested with black people as long as training and riding a horse had been regarded as labor and not as a job that could turn someone into a celebrity. It hadn't mattered as much to the white race and community to do anything about it but when black jockeys started to become famous for their work respected for it that success became a threat for a while the mythology of the Kentucky Derby maintained that the shift to primarily white trainers and jockeys had been a quote natural one that all the old jockeys and trainers had moved north during the great migration which began in the nineteen teens or that the black men had lost their taste of agricultural work and had gone to work in factories instead but this was absolutely untrue by the late eighteen eighties and early. Eighteen Ninety S. The white racing community was making a dedicated and deliberate effort to force black jockeys and trainers out of the Industry. Black Jockeys started experiencing harassment both on and off the track with white jockeys forcing them into the rails during the race or actually striking them with their horsewhips. This last one was not only physically painful but was also humiliating because it hearkens back to whips being used to punish slaves by the turn of the Twentieth Century Black Jockeys. Were HAVING TROUBLE. Finding contracts to ride horses and black trainers were finding themselves out of work with owners seeking out white jockeys and trainers the tracks played their part as well with many explicitly banning black jockeys by nineteen o four. So it was under intentional. Systemic racism that black jockeys were forced out of the Kentucky Derby and of the racing industry in general. There were no black jockeys at all in the Kentucky Derby Between Nineteen Twenty One and two thousand that year. Marlins Julian road and placed seventh. It would be more than another decade after hero that the Derby would see another black jockey and that was Kevin Krieger who was originally from Saint Croix who rolled Golden Sense in the twenty thirteen. Derby all of this of course complicates the Kentucky. Derby is romanticized presentation of life. In the south it's a lot of the same troops that are used to romanticize plantations in antebellum life. Which while it looks very romantic on the surface when you really take a gander at it. It's very problematic yet. The even the term plantation comes with this aura of like beautiful magnolia trees and sipping sweet. Tea On your on your front porch But it was effectively a slave labor camp which is not have that same romanticized idea so there are definitely parallels between the overall narrative that tries to like shift the perception of what slave states in the South. Where like and the perception of what the Kentucky Derby is was like and why. There was such a shift in the demographics of who was training and riding and taking care of the horses. Thank you so much for joining us today for this Saturday. Classic if.

"Saturday would be the Kentucky Derby my favorite day of the year I love horse racing been in or around it pretty much my entire life no Kentucky Derby going to be actually run but there is going to be a virtual Kentucky Derby which do I really want to watch I think you're going to want to watch it wait to hear about this time a one from Churchill Downs is with us and there is going to be a Kentucky derby on Saturday isn't there that is true we shall derby on the first Saturday in may after all well I've you know especially at the error rating van yourself we we delayed the one hundred and forty six the running of the Kentucky Derby until the first Saturday in September but as of this date which is a holiday so many of us started to loom we realized we had a responsibility to our fans and to what's happening in the country right now to really step up and still celebrate it but to make it stand for something bigger than we ever thought possible so we want to take knowledge what's happening in our world now with a global pandemic and raise some money for covert nineteen emergency relief while still celebrating the spirit of the derby so we're going to do that a couple different ways one which is most exciting is there a virtual derby and you're really gonna love it what is the virtual derby and it is hard for people to add to comprehend I know when I first heard it I was worried if it's going to be corny what it's gonna look like but I've just seen a trailer of the graphics and it will blow you away it looks like a real race happening under the historic twin spires of Churchill Downs and we're calling it Kentucky Derby Triple Crown showdown so what we've done is we're hitting the thirteen Triple Crown winners against each other to see who will emerge as the ultimate champion this weekend how will it look like is it animated or is it is Sir that when I was virtual reality where it looks real like a video game it is it's like a virtual reality it's it's computer animated we worked at a company called inspired entertainment and I would encourage anyone who's interested to go to the Kentucky Derby Facebook and Instagram handled to see the trailer we just released because if if ever you have any doubt about this that will convince you gave me chills there's that scene we want to show too much because we don't give away how this ends an appetite I don't know how this and that may be Q. people excel under lock and key at them very well kept secret which is you know hard to do in this industry it is the greatest idea of all times because it for every horseman it's the the most debated thing and is who is truly the great champion and you know what they got secretary American pharaoh because people remember the American farmer recently obviously someone probably sent you can't bet on it that right you cannot bet on it so you're correct there is no they'll be no wagering on this product so with each state having served different regulations in order for us to roll this out nationally we're not able to do away during but you know there is money on the line and that is the money we're trying to raise four October nineteen emergency relief Churchill Downs has pledged to match at two million dollars in fan donations and what we're encouraging people to do is go.

"Kentucky Derby, I had a chance to speak with ABC's will Clark who was on the track in the midst of it all the Kentucky Derby has been run. And it took him about twenty minutes. And now it looks like we finally have a winner after the first finisher was disqualified joining us now from the track as ABC's well clarkin, I tell us what's going on here right now. It is an absolute mad house here at the track. The the horse that we have thought had won the derby maximum security Lewis says chasing service trainers disqualified that was on an object from the second place horse that was country House Democrats and Bill Maher trainer there after about twenty minutes ago. The incident in question was wide turn a maximum security on that second or third and fourth turn. And after reviewing a tape been disqualified. It's the winner Kentucky Derby one forty five. And I have his first Kentucky Derby win on a check calorie. This is also the first time in the history of the Kentucky Derby that a first place finisher has been disqualified jets, and and just the suspense very rating here and questions. Questions on a metric bright tracks walking tracks. And it's looking out. Winning jockey twenty minutes on the phone with the stewards now Herbie champion. He's getting ready to go winter just behind us to get his garland of roses and the trophy from Kentucky governor Matt Bevin, and it is some real high suspense here. The Kentucky Derby, which is typically very expensive again with but we took the drama to overtime tonight's, and I can imagine there's a lot of happy faces. And a lot of sad faces over the change in the order of finish. Because now the official winner was a sixty five to one longshot. We're still waiting on the the money as soon as that pops up here at stint beam beneficial race now, so we should have those those payouts shortly. But if you're if you're looking for the official order of finish, it is country house code of honor Tacitus. Brown. They're in the top three. So that is that your top three. Again, the the the horse that we all cross finish line has been disqualified due to what appears to be a white. Before coming down the homestretch. And what exactly does that mean? Did he impede the progress of another horse? It's up to put it in in kind of NASCAR terms. It's not staying in your lane. He would be the quivalent of of accusing two lanes of blocking method. We knew we don't the payouts if you had a two dollar win tickets on country house you are now getting a hundred and thirty two dollars forty cents. Fifty six sixteen.

"But it's a matter of at the front end horse is going to be contested because maximum security last time out, which is left alone contest on the front end. So obviously when you're left alone in that sense. He just was able to pull away in his timing is everything looked so good. Just because there wasn't anyone there to contest him on the Kentucky Derby. He he's gonna define renter's gonna have a lot of pressure put on most likely, so it's important to try to figure out. And if you do think there's going to be a fast pace, obviously closers are beneficial in that sense, a horse on the front and gets away with Flo. Fractions, the are essentially dead. They're not gonna have any shot. So I definitely try to figure out how the raise is gonna play out in for me. It's the stocking Typos the horse. That's coming around the first Turner in stretch or around the mild point, not me the horse. That's going to be usually fourth fifth not too far off the front end. But those are the horses that have the clear racing room down the stretch. Now, obviously, it's so difficult to navigate a field with twenty other runners when you're boxed in on the rail, so having horse that's already going to be somewhat close to the front end and have clear racing room. I think those are the ones I tend to lean towards winning the race in. I mean as far as third-place fourth-place goes, it's on headwind shot. It's usually. That's when you're gonna get the closers in there 'cause they're gonna be passing the tired tired horses on the lead. But I mean who knows obviously the race can play out in so many different ways. But that's why the pales- of forty thousand. Huge puzzle. But it's always fun to try to crack that now, I know in every other sport advance analytics are becoming all the rage. We even got a question here at Philip pedlar wrote in one of the most important stats on the sheet to consider for the derby. And or throw bread racing in general. But yeah, like what kind of stats do you look at coming in? And are there is there a world of advance stats advanced metrics when it comes the horse racing? Yeah. You can find so many different things people will break down every single every single raves every single detail of the race times at mile points the quarter mile points in just so many different intricacies. But if you're just looking at it simplistically, and you're not looking into numbers in that sense. I think in thoroughbred racing in general people very much so value horses that are dropping in classification, so horse. That's coming out of the highest cost. Occasion, be grade one so horse. That's coming out of the graded stakes ranks a grade one race in dropping into when allowance race, obviously that would be the coolant of a horse that's doing really well or facing competition facing off against easier. So I think that's an angle that people really overvalue. I would argue it's important and obviously can instill a win. But I think horses that enter sharp, and is that are winning whether it's against easier competition. I love them a lot for the derby. I think a derby horse that. Coming out of a race that won or finished second or was closing. Well, I think it's important when it's such a young horse to see that type of progression at type of maturity, so I think that's an it's really important to consider his horse. That's been racing. Well, and you can see whether it's through their times or through their finishing order or just moving in in class how they've been doing. So I think progression, especially the younger horses is key. All have another couple years. Anita derby won't win to that point of liking horses. That are hot I do like a horse with a recent win. I agree with that angle. Completely the other thing I wanted to ask because I see my bookies dropping prop will will it be raining for the start of the Kentucky Derby forecasts suggest there there probably will be rain. Does this impact your handicap at all? Here. You know, what it's it's interesting because honestly rain for me is one of those.
