Kentucky AG Warns to Not Let "Celebrities, Influencers and Activists" in Wake of Breonna Taylor Decision "Capture Our Emotions"

"Here, Kentucky's Attorney General. Daniel. Cameron. Today. According to Kentucky Law. The use of force by mattingly in Cosgrove was justified to protect themselves. This. Justification bars us from pursuing criminal charges. In Miss Brianna Taylor's death justice is not often easy. Does Not fit the mold of public opinion, and it does not conform to shifting standards. Now is the Reverend Al Sharpton. The host of MSNBC's politics. Nation. He's author of the New Book Rise up confronting a country at the crossroads which will be available Tuesday Reverend Sharpton, your reaction to what the attorney general had to say and what's unfolded tonight in Louisville. Out My reaction is that certainly it is not surprising, but it is still allowing to see that a grand jury and grand jury usually a totally framed by what the prosecutor plus before because that's the only lawyer in the role to come back and say that we will charge and also for all the violence that he did cause and the cause for those. Surrounding an area on apartment that we kill someone, but we will not charge him with killing. Someone shows an outrageous an unbelievable kind of justification for doing nothing around the death of Brianna Taylor. Brianna Taylor was not even mentioned in the indictment if anyone wants to know why we are saying black lives should matter they acrylic saying Louisville. The day did not math. That attorney general to even attack those of us that supported the family at the family's request saying that the celebrities and influence activists on that wealth from end to Kentucky or should not there to give their views when we're welcome there to watch horses run around the track for the Louisville Dirt Louisville Kentucky Derby. But we're not welcomed to stand up for the life of value and worth of a black woman who's only actions that night issue to better in our own home committing no crime involved with no criminal activity. That's why we continue to. That's why we should vote in. We should use the fact that you can vote in November even in Kentucky even though we couldn't vote the grand jury we ought, to sin, Mitch McConnell into retirement as a deposit on the justice we want for the retailers of. I want to let the audience here what you were just referring to the Kentucky Attorney General who is a Republican talked today about activists from out of state who don't live in Kentucky. As if they have no right to talk about this, let's listen to that. There will be celebrities, influencers and activists who having lived in Kentucky. We tried to tell us how to feel suggesting they understand the facts of this case that they know our community and the Commonwealth better than we do. But they don't. Let's not give into their attempts to influence our thinking or capture our emotions. It sounds like he was talking about you. Talking about me and many others than many that up right there on the ground. From out of state but let me remind people that all of the activities of Leonidas Attorney Ben crump was at the invitation of the Family WanNa. Justice. And if you know it's an old playbook calling people outside Agitators Monitor King Junior and John Lewis Super Far greater than us will call that that will not in any way stopped mood that's gone on all over this country and the way to deal with this, we must try to change the laws and one way to do that is to change the lawmakers. We must turn our pain in the power in the rubble must continue to non-binding march to keep these. Alive. Riyan Taylor matting her life matters and we don't have to be a citizen of Louisville to say that and many Citizens Louisville are saying that as well and just last week. The right thing did happen on the civil case the city settled with the family for twelve million dollars and you know that settlement never would have happened without you and others bringing national attention to this case. Well absolutely, and why would you settle for that record amount of money if there was no wrong had been done and one of the reasons that we marched by the tens of thousands in Washington just three weeks ago and details mother spoken that much is because we clearly need is George Floyd policing injustice act passed by the Senate, passed by the House that would also make will officers if they commit a crime are subject of of the lawsuits and pretzels have to deal with it taxpayers paying forward individual offices do and are not held accountable for we need to change the laws by changing the lawmakers.

Jockey John Velazquez on his third Kentucky Derby win in his first competition with Authentic

"We have John Velazquez the hall of Fame Three Time Kentucky Derby winner on the phone now Johnny. Thanks for some time this morning the industry star of the week at the by Stuart Morris Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Yeah. Three and ten years I think that's something that's getting overlooked here. animal kingdom always dreaming. authentic. Things did not go as planned when that gate opened on Saturday? Well I tell you. I was expecting that the we're GONNA break a little slow and I? Even said it. Before they raised a couple of his did I did you know? I get in like the position that we had just because being last one indicate normally once you get into gate. kind of like to get a sausage facets of canned really wants to live circuits. So horse is not. Hundred percent spending properly, and You Know Eight, hundred, ten, th there for jumping number good and even. He's not very quick from the gate. So with watching he's prior races and being the last one and go into the I I was back to not. On the other hand I knew he was going to be quick. you know to to get too close to the lead or BMW before we get, we get to the to the turn. So you know I didn't wear so much and I think even if you the way broke, I kinda wane gradually you know going into the lead before we get to the first time. Were you surprised that no one took advantage of the lackluster break and that you were able to clear by the time you've got that I I. Well I. If we look back at the race really there was only one. One speed horse in and teeth the law and I knew he was not wanna go to delete or you know that's not the way they they actually wanted them to you know and listened to Berkeley and and and prior to that you know the just like to suck somebody and so on. And other words Park elope is I thought he probably go to the lead and and I was willing to let him go if you wanted to do obviously when we pass it pass the wire for the first time in and see him and he wasn't going to delete it. So that was my turn you know to. Okay. Let me go ahead and do what Mars you want to do. You always talk to us here on the network about playing you leave the paddock with plans a to Z with a horse like authentic. There's really not much and you know you know he's GonNa break a little slow at least you did he's not going to break that sharp. You're going to be on the lead I'm sure after you watch the Haskell. You. Likely. Did you have some concerns about the mile and a quarter after watching the Haskell? We always have it. You know and and. Talking to by he, he's just like you know what I think I haven't much ready this time know for going on quarter. We always had a question whether he can't go out on any tips like, but you you you bob. You have to carry the source now he goes to putting the pressure. And he says that when you get to the stretch I, want you to to get you let handed ready for this. Okay. Make sure you get you get his attention and I mean to territory worked out. Perfect. You know talking about we planning with we were just rubies. Have dinner like three, nine, five bike and we keep talking about it. Then it's like you'll make sure you haven't left hand to you know get attention and if you look back from the house cold to the Derby, Mike, Never hit him though Mike he just GonNa kick. Showing the weapon and kind of top him this time you know I got the. Price Him and he responded right away i. that was the difference dry. They're actually afterwards Bob said to me if he makes had hidden his left handed in this house. You would never be on him on the Derby because I don't think he would have got off of them. You know what I mean, and that's why they thought. It was that he might not want to go the distance and. He's a little quirky so he kinda gets distracted very very, very easily and he looked he looked like he was GonNa win easy and and the has over. So it kind of you know the other horses going back to him so. If he had, he had a ham handed I think he would have gone on and You would have been in these stories. So I'm glad he did. Now Three Kentucky Derby wins that that is rarefied Air Bob said after the race when he wants six, it never gets old, you feel the same way. Absolutely. You know. They ask me that the obviously when month derby ends like if it gets old you into something else go and retire and something now absolutely that that feeling that you get. The satisfaction you get, it's incredible. There's just no worse due to this drive it you know and I mean if you get up to to be in this kind of thing, Menendez GonNa. Racist It's incredible. It's just no words to describe it. You know. Got To be. Blessed.

"At the end of the day I think with. More speed presences for recall runs just fine wins. There is April record that was that was a little her flexing while the rest did set up better for recall it her. The newspaper record we seen before at two we we know she a lot better than that so. Really. I've been I've been hopeful she could she contending race like the mile but actually I don't really know where she goes and moving onto probably. The it's very hard on a Kentucky Derby weekend to say the Kentucky Derby was not the best race on a particular card but this high to be the best race of last weekend the race of the week and very likely could be the race of the month in one of the races of the year and this race definitely did not deserve a loser. If you have not seen this race already I, absolutely encourage you to go back and watch it. This was purely entertaining horse race Sarah the empress rent absolutely too good to lose here bells the one terrific horse in her own, right. I have liked her in several angles where you know she wasn't as long a shot as she would have been in a race like the winning colors, but definitely shoes out I some the horses in the odds board here she ran a really good race for me and like we mentioned or like I mentioned excuse me a to good to. This did not deserve loser classic example race like this surrogate empress ran freakishly fast. She never should have been able to get away with the the fraction that she was able to get away with and it wasn't like that she tired at all in this race. You know she just got beat on the spot and sometimes that happens and you know that's a perfect example. Tough luck you get beat a nose. Race but no disrespect for Sarah getting efforts coming out of it. Great. Run by bells the want to be able to close up in a race like this but Sarah the empress I if you're a horse, if you're a fan of a horse, it's not Sarah Getting empress going into the fillion mayor sprint you should be concerned because you know if she can survive that kind of that kind of fractions. Than, I don't know what she can't do going into the Breeders Cup. She's definitely very dangerous and. I would be hard pressed to not safe. You put me on the spot right now surrogate efforts may just be the Horse I take the in affiliate mayor sprint..

Activists demanding justice for Breonna Taylor protested on Kentucky Derby Day

"The first Saturday in May. But this is Kentucky Derby Day after the postponing of the race is just one reason the 146 Derby is one for the history books As W. F B L Stephanie Wolf explains. Security often referred to as the two most exciting minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby is also a marquee social event days. A fanfare Parties parade, a massive firework show. Ah, a lot of that is gone this year due to the global pandemic and even more notable None of 155,000 plus fans in the grandstands a revision Churchill Downs, the home of the Derby made recently. That's not all That's different this year. Louisville just marked 100 consecutive days of protest against racism and police violence and demonstrators plan to make Derby 101 days. Several groups held a press conference near Churchill Downs Friday. This's Ehren Jordan of No justice, No peace Louisville. We have several black organisations behind us, and we have full intent to black out their happened demands to cancel dirty something that's never been done before. Haven Harrington is CEO and host of main event sports radio. He's covered the Derby for years. He thinks it should be run. It's the city's signature event. But while the horse racing industry doesn't often weigh in on social justice issues, Harrington says, Now is not the time for silence in this town, you know, which is still waiting on bated breath for what's gonna happen with You know Briana Taylor and the officers involved can't just be big hats in pretty dresses. You have to say and do something to acknowledge the situation. Churchill Downs did issue a statement Thursday afternoon, acknowledging how black jockeys once dominated the race, but were then excluded and acknowledging the pain community members feel right now as they wait for the state attorney general and FBI to conclude their investigation into the police, killing a Briana Taylor. It's important to carry on, says Churchill Down CEO Bill Car Stange in here he is talking on CNBC support for hewing important are our traditions and culture in our community. Tell me how this will unify the community. The running of course, poet activist Hannah Drake lives near Churchill Downs. She's had a simmering frustration with the Derby for years. Even more. So, she says, as she faces arrest for obstructing the highway by protesting in the streets. But I for Darby, too inconvenient me and block off street, not let me pass that fine. Drake, who is black, recently wrote a letter to the CEO asking for some self reflection of the institutions, lack of black representation and a lack of in her opinion, compassion. This is the institution that can redeem itself and they need to start by asking himself. How can we be better neighbors? So this Adjacent community and to the very one way she thinks they could do better is by dumping a tradition, she says, is rooted in racism.

This is current odds. Tis a law fortified. And then there is a pretty good distance between him and the next horses. And the next course is there's actually a pretty good distance of who are a pretty good racer. Who's the second choice right now. It would be Santa Anita Derby winner Honor AP at 8 to 1 Authentic, though, is 9 to 1. That's Bob Baffert horse who won the Haskell Tendo one Bob Baffert horse 1000 words Who won the shared beliefs. Think it's <Speech_Male> fairly easy to <Speech_Male> pick tacit as in here <Speech_Male> if he doesn't <Speech_Male> win this race, <Speech_Male> I have very, <Speech_Male> very <SpeakerChange> good reasons <Speech_Male> to be concerned. <Speech_Music_Male> Granting <Speech_Music_Male> up I'm doing <Speech_Music_Male> a preview of this <Speech_Music_Male> over on Youtube. So <Speech_Music_Male> you can get my my <Speech_Music_Male> full thoughts there <Speech_Music_Male> on this <Speech_Music_Male> this Jalen. Yeah <Speech_Music_Male> it's a little disappointing but. <Speech_Music_Male> I don't <Speech_Music_Male> think it's I mean it's <Speech_Music_Male> obviously probably <Speech_Music_Male> one of the weakest would <Speech_Music_Male> were killed history, <Speech_Music_Male> but it's <Speech_Music_Male> still a fundraiser <Speech_Music_Male> at the end of the day. I <Speech_Music_Male> think tasks this is <Speech_Music_Male> a lovable was at <Speech_Music_Male> one point for <Speech_Music_Male> a streak of time a lovable <Speech_Music_Male> loser. <Speech_Music_Male> I just really liked his <Speech_Music_Male> he get this this <Speech_Music_Male> great one when it would be <Speech_Music_Male> a lot of fun I I don't <Speech_Music_Male> think that I think that probably <Speech_Music_Male> gives away my topic <Speech_Music_Male> I have some <Speech_Music_Male> some good ideas <Speech_Music_Male> underneath that I love <Speech_Music_Male> for everybody. <SpeakerChange> Go check <Speech_Female> out run youtube. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> And with all that being <Speech_Female> said, like we mentioned, <Speech_Male> we've got a ton of stuff <Speech_Male> over on youtube this <Speech_Female> week our friend <Speech_Female> J. did <Silence> join us <hes> earlier. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Male> Today <Speech_Female> today being Wednesday. <Speech_Male> So that's <Speech_Male> out on Youtube we <Speech_Male> got a ton of previews out <Speech_Female> there. We ultimately did decided <Speech_Female> to approve the pet <Speech_Female> day mile. <Speech_Female> So you can go get <Speech_Female> my bombs away picks <Speech_Female> in that <Speech_Female> race if you really trust <Speech_Female> me after taking <Speech_Female> Shash Shaked me up. <Speech_Male> But aside from <Speech_Male> that for something by today <Speech_Male> if you play any <Speech_Male> of the races this weekend. "Away the best in his. And the next year is we're going to get to is the agreed to Dandy usually run for the travers but obviously with pandemic this year time the resistance been shifted this good example of you know what the Pat Day mile has been in past years at the pet day mile this year turned into a really deep race of a Lotta horses that have been sprinting past trying to go one term we already talked about that a Lot of these horses are kind of horses that may have been had Kentucky Derby on their radar. Obviously, Dr Post pulled out of the Kentucky Derby to run in this race and you know there's some other interesting horses in here. You've got first line and happy who are coming out of Medan wins and then you've also got Celtic striker and Mr. Guide who Are Past horses that you know in the case of Celtic striker was a stakes winner in the case of mystic guy he was favored in the Peter Pan last out was beaten by two horses who I think are pretty talented. Car Car would have been live in the Kentucky Derby and Country Grammar who's not here I think has been potential to be you know another? Level stakes when are higher than a great three. So that was a good field who's beaten in front of I also really like Hayes uses team in this race, I like his last a couple of efforts he was beaten by. If you listen to the Kentucky Derby preview if you've had not. Said enough already go check that out. He was beaten by. Tinian. In. In his allowance race at Gulfstream earlier this year and then Also this year was fourth in the Haskell and then most recently second behind pneumatic who is going to be live in the preakness in the Pegasus stakes amendment. So I think there's a lot to like about he's uses team ultimately, I'm going to go with Mr Guide here give him a lot. Of Credit for the back class that he has in in the Peter Pan which feels really weird to say the Peter Pan at Saratoga. But ultimately, I'm going go with him on top like I mentioned Dr Posts Underneath I'm also going to take a shot with his team. Put Him for third in here to get a good saw top three in this race..

"Talented racehorse. Moving onto the PAT. Day Mile. This is kind of you know usually been the the undercard race for the Kentucky Derby. A lot of horses that didn't necessarily make the Derby ended up in this race but this is a race where a lot of horses that are coming out of the seven. Furlong. Allen Jerkin Sakes earlier this year. So this is kind of a bit of a preview of the Breeders Cup. Cook what could be the Breeder's Cup sprint? There are some you know good sprint level horses no parole and ECO town are both grade one winners sprinting but I'm actually GonNa, take a pass on both of those and I'm GonNa go with tap it to win on top and I've got a couple reasons for why like it's went on top. You can make the case in certainly I will that he was coming on in the forego that's that race a mile I make a very good case that he wins that He does have a win going a mile and a sixteenth that was in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park that was a really nice win, and that's what kind of propelled him into the Belmont stakes. He ran a credible fifth beaten by four really good horses that are all either live in the Kentucky Derby in the case of Max player. Or Tisza law who's the overwhelming favourite pneumatic who's going to be live in the preakness and Dr Post is GonNa be one of the favorites for the Jim Dandy which will get to later underneath I. Really Really Liked Shasha shake me up to be second and that's a bit of a bombs away pick but I'm GONNA own it right here. Shush shaking up has some really bad rate bad efforts in stakes races six, hundred, seventeen, the risen star. But he does have on his debut won by five and a half links going seven furlongs at Churchill most most recently at Churchill, in A. Six Furlong Allowance race granted it was six, but it was a churchill he was beaten four and a half links well-beaten but he was beaten by Ceesay rocket who I had a lot of Nice things to say about. See Rockets agreed to winter. Not, a bad effort for him to be second in that race and he did also have a nice win earlier this year at Oaklawn. Park. So bit of a bombs away pig bit of a kind of out there angle with Shasha, shake me up but I'm GONNA put it out there just because I I don't know that it's going to happen but might as well, and for third I'm going to go rushie he likes to be consistent run third It's reasonable to expect that he'll run a good race here. I don't think he's going to run a winning after it, but I do like him underneath to to run third..

"Kid in real news that's reverse. Those makes sense underneath wide open but I really. I. Really Like my top thing I know it's not. Uncommon hundred eight on top I really do like Willie. And moving onto Saturday the first of several graded stakes. There is the American turf, a mile and a sixteenth on the. Horse I really like in here is a smooth like straight. It's very weird to say that does smooth like straight beat till one of the horses going into the same cards, Kentucky Derby but that's the way things have worked out with storm. The court really liked the effort that he had. They're up for some underneath angles have. Not completely lost faith in fuel pass. I was not very thrilled with a seventh place finish in the Saratoga Derby. But I do like that he does run like to run well over Churchill downs. Stakes when they're in the autumn stakes was third in the war chant and you know like I mentioned it was discouraging seven. The everybody is a great stakes on the turf did win the Transylvania Kellen. So I, like him. Underneath I'm going to use him third and the Horse I like for second is fancy liquor. He was starting at Transylvania came back stake race at Indiana grand was second and allowance earlier this year at Churchill A, you know throw him underneath for second like I mentioned already use smooth like straight on top. Won The won the war chanted Churchill downs also smooth like straight. So definitely likes to track really like to see that liked his effort last time not lost faith in fuel pass and I'm going to you know Mike Maker you can't go wrong with Mike Maker Angle. Dotted. All and I going to go with with the my maker. I'M GONNA go with sealed pass? I. Really have so many achieve belong excuses for that Sir Derby. Intrigues while he was seven at the, it's not a huge margin it I like that he's cutting back, disinfect you like. We obviously know what he's good at. Likes, Churchill. Downs. Lot End. Up. Gingell the source, but biggest thing. Lot early speed side on in this race I mean coming from your favorites you know street and fancy liquor but also horses came Theo in sensation in of. All sources that were either first or second in her last race is so that concerns me a little I'd be like feel pass is one of ten be able to the pizzas kind of like he did in the Transylvania. To starts back in. And little bit bombs away. Underneath and I'M GONNA go with the to American Butterfly and I it's kind of weird to sail dwayne his horse grassroots because. Historically has not been. Strong on the grass that percentage is. Now, very strong but this horse. has really been knocking around running some very good races underneath in company I mean he hasn't missed a forward since and he's right after eight races since then he'd been doing good but. Really. The biggest thing is to switch to grassy viner farrow. Who Did you know me? You know I preach that American fairways grass ir he's a warfront mayor even more grasping the dam site in all honesty I would not be surprised as he accept, run Youtube. So I'm GonNa go American Butterfly with some value underneath will throw in smelled lecturing because you disagree talented racehorse. Moving onto the PAT. Day Mile. This is kind of you know usually been the the undercard race for the Kentucky Derby. A lot of horses that didn't.

Final Derby Dress Rehearsals

"The favourite for Saturday's travers stakes is the Belmont stakes winner Tis the law, the owners of the law, a group of fairly regular guys from the Saratoga area they go by Saka. Toga stables are the same guys who owned funny side the winner of the two, thousand, three, Kentucky Derby and preakness they showed up to each triple crown race in a yellow school bus, not a limo. It was a scene to which many of us could relate but I'm going to give you a comparison of two other. Owners of horses running in Saturday's travers they are and Lori Hall who owned the Third Place Finisher in the Belmont Max Player and Orlando and Jonathan Noda who liked their travers entrant I line are the longest of longshots George Hall is the founder of a Hedge Fund, the Clinton Group that company's assets reached a high of five and a half billion dollars in two thousand, sixteen. Orlando Noda is a thirty one year old trainer who co all of his horses with his brother. Jonathan who's in the car business? George Hall and his wife Lori sold a six level. Manhattan penthouse in two thousand seventeen for somewhere around thirty eight million dollars. Orlando notice biggest return on investment so far has been the horse not loves a fight who not claimed for ten thousand dollars in May of two, thousand nineteen and whose win a month later represented his trainers I ever. T loves a fight won four races for his trainer and finished second last week in the John Morrissey at Saratoga. You. Get the idea Max player for George and Lori. Hall won the withers stakes back in February and finished third in the Belmont. STAKES IN JUNE FIRST LINE FOR ORLANDO. Noda just earned his first win in four tries and he's returning on only ten days rest to take on an imposing field. But if his trainers story is any harbinger, don't count first line out and we are pleased to welcome to win the game for the first time the trainer of First Line Orlando Noda what went into the decision to turn this horse around in just ten days. The horse came out of it good and I nominated him prior to even run especially. Like figure that especially wasn't GonNa go I was I was GONNA test my luck there and restaurant him because. The horse had shown me talent ever since I had him and I think got strike while the iron is hot right now and everything is just clicking on all cylinders. So I. Think we're just going to give it a go is not every day that we can have a three year old peak at the right time via because of this corona virus that maybe I might might just be able to pull off the upset and get my derby points that that I high horse up about the beginning. You would said to a couple of racing aficionados over the winter that you had a derby horse and first line what made you think that then Oh no the horses super talented it from the first time that we breathed him. We knew we had something special. I'm not the lightest of riders and horses just noting on track with me and I just can't picture it. Any other way because everything has played out to where it should as he broke his. Maiden here in Saratoga and I think the past two races, six furlongs, it was just the the too short for him for his long strident. He just went comfortable and those fractions buying the mollering Nathan not many horses hold up biting the whole time that they are at the top of the stretch hometown in first line and they've been at it. Right from the START I line on the outside pokes ahead and front hometown continues to battle down at the rail. Now, they're at the eighth bowl it is first line and hometown go to battle for a mile and a furlong here first line hud and front hometown not giving up they come for the finish and first line is first under the wire. Race I'm wondering if he's even cooled out yet from that race, I mean that was affirmed and Alydar Rier Dan Against Jaipur was neck and neck for a mile and an eighth I mean, how do you think that part of a racist going to affect him the ten days notwithstanding? Even fresh I'm not doing much with him and. Keep Afresh to the to the race. Then you gotta show up on the race checking in, and that's how he is all game once it gets onto the track. IS A. Very level-headed. Once once he gets into training just like train I'm just giving just. Keep them -freshing raider fire. For for the drivers.

Tiz The Law Owner Jack Knowlton On Belmont Win

"Will here it is Jack Knowlton visiting with Anthony's to bill on. Red Brand radio. Congratulations on a fantastic win. A lot of people feel like it was seventeen years in the making my friend. Well we finally got our triple. Crown for Sakho Toga for Barclay tag and took us two horses and seventeen years, but from what I understand. It's still kind of fight for Barclay There aren't a lot of trainers at You know is one three legs of the triple crown in recent years. Yeah and you know you guys together. Seventeen years apart, and with New York breads and I know that's the. The mantra over attack a Toga. You guys support that program as well as anyone. Well I was pretty fascinated to learn that it was one hundred thirty eight years since the new. York breaded, won the. Belmont stakes now I know a lot of people are going to say well, then really count you know at you know. It wasn't a mile and a half and Yada, Yada but. In my mind, anybody who watched that race, who questions who would have won that race? It has been a mile and a half. I think the outcome would have been exactly the same as it was at amendment eight. And, Barkley had gone on record is before the race saying you know I would have liked a mile and a half of the source, and he's a horse again. New York Brad and that's what you guys do, you? You've been high on this horse from day one. Well. I watched them train at Saratoga. I mean you're up there and I'd go over at six o'clock in the morning 'cause. That was a time of day that Berkeley landed of track. It was almost darker. She got near the end of the need of what's dark. And not only did he. You know have a good works, and you know work quickly, not crazy fast, but you know good works. But the way he galloped out, I mean they couldn't pull him up. He goes around the second turn. After you know going, pass the finish line and writers just added tremendously difficult time pulling them up junior. Alvarado was riding. Mine is is raised back then, and when I saw that we went into a first range of six and a half furlong maiden mates for New York. Badge I really had a lot of confidence and He's lived up to it so one little bump in a road when he got stuck down inside and the worst part of the race track and Kentucky Jockey Club At. The end of November other than that He really has been flawless. Yeah. That's lobby. Track back in November. He's just been He's been impeccable. The rest of the way the covid nineteen outbreak of course forced post moment of the Kentucky Derby the preakness to. The. Bom obviously the biggest change with the Belmont was not only the two weeks, but the distance. You've mentioned the ASTERISK. We'll get to that in a minute You guys pretty much. And gals I don't want to offend anybody in Saratoga those thirty-five parts of this. Is that accurate? Seven and funny is that I was that six or seventy? You guys and funny side. We had ten ten. Okay, okay only. The same folks lieutenant. And I the only holdovers class. You guys Gus Williams. He passed away several years ago as dead one of our other great partners Dave Man but Ruined I gave remaining to. Stay with it and never in the world expecting that we would get the kind of horse that we've gotten here with the law. And this was an important race for you to win Jack Not that you don't want to win. The Derby again or the preakness again, but the Belmont stakes with your dedication to new. York, Brad's and New York, and let's face it. you know in a game where horses changed hands an awful lot. You and Barclay have been together two decades at this point. This was a very important race for you guys to to tick the box on. It was, and now he's got one more coming up in my hometown Saratoga Springs I've lived thirty five years I know Barkley wants to win it badly as do I and. Really if we can you know, check this box. would include the champagne, which is the the most important two year old race. The Belmont stakes obviously being biggest Belmont. Race and We get the travers at Saratoga. That's quite a triple. And that's pretty remarkable. When you consider you know you started this twenty years ago. As pretty much. Just some friends getting together and buying some horses. We had six guys and Sackett Cyber. I find the eastern end of Lake Ontario I went to high school. We were having our usual. Memorial Day weekend, bearing barbecue, and my wife and I would go up there and visit and I had been in the harness. Business Standard Bread business I guess for about a dozen years and got out. In in ninety four. And somebody up there said well. Why don't we buy a thoroughbred and I said you know figuring I've never gonNA hear anything about it again. I said okay. I said you know, let's each put in five thousand dollars. I knew Tim Kelly at that point who's a trainer and works at is never now. so I got a hold of me and he found this a New York Brad for twenty two thousand dollars. We named him the second sex after the six of us. From Sackett Cyber and came up with the name sack Toga stable after sack I Saratoga and made ourselves Maroon and gray, which are high school college. So. That's how it all started.

"kentucky derby" Discussed on Stuff You Missed in History Class

"Points during its history which really add up to basically all of its history the Kentucky Derby has been criticized for a whole range of issues in addition to the campaigns to end gambling and drinking and racing that we already discussed in more recent years the Derby has faced allegations of animal abuses both during training and in the race itself. This has been especially true after accidents and injuries have happened during or after the race in two thousand and eight for example Philly eight bells collapsed after the race have in broken both of her front ankles and she had to be euthanized. Although women were specifically invited to attend the Kentucky Derby from the very beginning with separate seating away from the bedding falling out of favor in the years after World War One the Derby has in a lot of ways. Always been a man's world. Diane crump was the first woman to ride in the Derby in nineteen seventy and. She's one of only six women jockeys in the Kentucky Derby as of two thousand sixteen women have been involved in other roles at the Kentucky Derby further back in history in nineteen o five Ellwood took the prize and was the first Kentucky Derby winner owned by a woman lasca Cornell Ellwood was also the first Derby winner bread by women who is cited everywhere as MRS J B Prather. I don't know what her actual first name is. But as of twenty sixteen no woman trainer or Jockey had ever won the Kentucky Derby and men outnumber women by far in all of these roles so today men and in particular white men dominate the Kentucky Derby seen all the way from most of the Churchill Downs Incorporated Board of directors to the jockeys riding in the race. But that wasn't the case when the Derby started although meriwether Lewis Clark. Junior and his associates and investors were white the majority of the jockeys and trainers were not in eighteen. Seventy five thirteen out of the Derby's fifteen jockeys in that race were black. As were many of the trainers when the Kentucky Derby began the people who had the most experience caring for and training horses particularly in the south where black and since the first derby took place only about a decade after the civil war and the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment Abolishing Slavery and Kentucky had been a slave state many of the men who had trained and cared for and wrote in the First Kentucky. Derby were either previously enslaved or were the children of people who had been enslaved in that first eighteen seventy five Kentucky Derby. The winning horse was aristocracies. Who set a record for speed in three year? Old Horses aristocracies trainer Ansel Williamson and his Jockey nineteen year old. Oliver Lewis were. Both black. Williamson was enslaved from birth and sold from one owner to another until being emancipated following the civil war between that first derby in nineteen. Oh Two when Jimmy Wingfield Road Alan a dale to the win which was Wingfield. Second Consecutive win. Fifteen of the twenty eight. Winning horses were ridden by black jockeys in those years between Oliver. Lewis and Jimmy wingfield other black jockeys rose to prominence in the Derby and eventually became the era's version of the sports superstar Isaac Burns. Murphy was the first jockey to win the Derby three times which he did in eighteen eighty four eighteen ninety and eighteen ninety one. He became a colossally well respected. Jackie winning forty four percent of the races he wrote in which is a record. No other jockey has topped the post civil war reconstruction officially ended in eighteen. Seventy six the year after the First Kentucky Derby Racist Jim Crow laws enforcing segregation soon followed in Eighteen. Ninety six the. Us Supreme Court ruled in Plessey Versus Ferguson. That this segregation was legal as long as the separate facilities were equal and by that point a lot of other sports had already implemented their own systems of segregation however it was not possible to quickly segregate the sport of horse racing when so much of the knowledge of how to care for a horse and ride it to a win rested with black people as long as training and riding a horse had been regarded as labor and not as a job that could turn someone into a celebrity. It hadn't mattered as much to the white race and community to do anything about it but when black jockeys started to become famous for their work respected for it that success became a threat for a while the mythology of the Kentucky Derby maintained that the shift to primarily white trainers and jockeys had been a quote natural one that all the old jockeys and trainers had moved north during the great migration which began in the nineteen teens or that the black men had lost their taste of agricultural work and had gone to work in factories instead but this was absolutely untrue by the late eighteen eighties and early. Eighteen Ninety S. The white racing community was making a dedicated and deliberate effort to force black jockeys and trainers out of the Industry. Black Jockeys started experiencing harassment both on and off the track with white jockeys forcing them into the rails during the race or actually striking them with their horsewhips. This last one was not only physically painful but was also humiliating because it hearkens back to whips being used to punish slaves by the turn of the Twentieth Century Black Jockeys. Were HAVING TROUBLE. Finding contracts to ride horses and black trainers were finding themselves out of work with owners seeking out white jockeys and trainers the tracks played their part as well with many explicitly banning black jockeys by nineteen o four. So it was under intentional. Systemic racism that black jockeys were forced out of the Kentucky Derby and of the racing industry in general. There were no black jockeys at all in the Kentucky Derby Between Nineteen Twenty One and two thousand that year. Marlins Julian road and placed seventh. It would be more than another decade after hero that the Derby would see another black jockey and that was Kevin Krieger who was originally from Saint Croix who rolled Golden Sense in the twenty thirteen. Derby all of this of course complicates the Kentucky. Derby is romanticized presentation of life. In the south it's a lot of the same troops that are used to romanticize plantations in antebellum life. Which while it looks very romantic on the surface when you really take a gander at it. It's very problematic yet. The even the term plantation comes with this aura of like beautiful magnolia trees and sipping sweet. Tea On your on your front porch But it was effectively a slave labor camp which is not have that same romanticized idea so there are definitely parallels between the overall narrative that tries to like shift the perception of what slave states in the South. Where like and the perception of what the Kentucky Derby is was like and why. There was such a shift in the demographics of who was training and riding and taking care of the horses. Thank you so much for joining us today for this Saturday. Classic if.

"Pretty pretty amazing we'll guys and girls who never you the story from or you never get the great stuff because there is there are too many of the same people that are walking around with microphones all sitting behind a microphone so i think we talked about it on that panel i think that the the problem is you know too many program directors in too many people in in prominent positions don't trust that their listeners can digest the content and i think an insult to the to the consumer because more times than not you'll find you know i would allow cool i do and more than not even if we disagree on things joe we shave that because i've you know you talked to any african american man or woman in corporate america you you have to understand people other people's cultures you have to you don't get to that point without being privy to jewish culture italian coach irish culture you know eastern european culture but then when it comes time to talk about some of the things that that you are made of you it's it's going how many people have no clue about but a lot of that is because there isn't as much a lot of white people don't notice that what is set to quote unquote normal is white culture and they don't need to they don't need to expand outside that to understand that much in the world if they choose to they can live within this bubble right whereas whereas lgbtq or a person of color or often cases a woman in certain industries they have to be able to identify with people that are different than them in order to enjoy the content there's a great part of the oscars where they did a montage about representation and kumail nangiani who wrote the big sick and is star of silicon valley said you know i grew up loving all of these movies made by white men starring white men and i grew up with them and i really look forward to white guys watching my movie having to identify with me and it sounds so simple why wouldn't that be the case but you know you mentioned program directors who are often so so i think of it like baseball right we always talk about fixing baseball and people say if your audience your primary audience is aging out and it's older men who are aging out you have to figure out ways.

"That i went to the guys that are so what are we going to do is work on our radio voices and i got up i went back to the dorm room order pizza from crotch rose i did something to make sure there's the pizza will taste a terrific and and i said you know what i i don't know if that's gonna be me and for the rest of the time there i was on the radio station w i d it was the blue channel down there you can get it on on television as well i was the only freshman to be on the on the station because my my buddy that got me the end he just stopped going he started throwing a party i took over his show and actually have a quiet storm show which is ridiculous but you know i i called the station back here in chicago and i said hey on the school now you know what what's up with that internship like oh yeah you know when you come down as soon as my year was up at southern illinois i came back home and i told my mother i'm like listen i i there's no reason for me to go back there if not specifically about that teacher that class for that specific idea of working on your on air voice the problem that i had with it was i felt like they were trying to engineer the authenticity out of out of people and you get that quite often now with a lot of products but the schools the churn out these products of you know it's like copy and paste and you hear you hear a lot with play by play guy especially in baseball you know you used to be able to hear they'd be house or you know a jack block or you knew that you were in the city or you're listening to a certain broadcast because that voice was that the soundtrack of their summer you know it's kind of like how feel about how you know hiphopping growing up in the chair where you when you you're listening to a west coast saw you when you were listening to an east coast song list of on because you you heard that flavor i felt like that was being engineered out of out of kids who two years although i think there's some there's some people who come.

"Thought it was a great pro debut and i think what this shows is that people out there and i mean mike that that's a fun commented how much of it he actually believes we'll we'll never know you know mike says a whole lot of things and he's very good at that obviously and where exactly lands on dylan dana's i'm not so sure that i i believe that that is his one hundred percent genuine take but what this show to me is that people don't know what professional anime debuts look like i mean they wanted to talk about how uncomfortable he looked on the feet please everybody go go to some show finds it finally a regional emanate show in your area and go watch it and go look at what guys look like when they are only know coming in to fight for the very first time i mean this is what it looks like it looks a little awkward and it looks a little uncomfortable but dylan dana's took a took a punch in this fight i thought he he he responded to a well he didn't he didn't wilt up he didn't look you know he wasn't blinking away the pain and thinking like oh my god had never been been been touched like that before he looked relatively comfortable to me and then he got the fight to the ground and the means in which he could i mean he pulled guard did he go through there and execute some gsp welltimed double leg and throw in arbonne the guy no but he finished the guy in the first round i was very impressed with him i have high hopes for him i also think that it is going to be difficult for him i mean he is he has done a great job of building up his name and building up haters and building up attention on himself and that is awesome for your for your bankroll it's not always awesome if you're developing your skills and your under a microscope every single time i mean that can create a very difficult climate to try to develop as an enemy fighter but i mean he's doing a lot of things right and he's got a lot of skill i mean you even see that right off the bat so i got high hopes for him a man who will have a home fight in at two hundred one of the biggest cards and bela tor.

"Have interest in that fight but i can't say i'm like super excited like oh man i can't wait to see how this first round of the the grand prix wraps up i'll be honest i don't feel like that but it has delivered what i what i expected it to and i've talked about this before that it gives bella toward that that storyline it gives it that that something to look forward to something to tie it in all together and i won't take a whole lot of time talking about this because i know i have in the past but it's just it feels like in the past the bella tours events are are kind of just so independent of one another that you just don't have those story lines that are weaving them together and so it's hard to maintain your interest on a weektoweek basis but this has done that for me and i think it's done it for a lot of people and and you can show them the bracket and so far the bracket estate stayed together so and i think i think you made a good a metaphor there i think the the fate or jail is going to be a shot in the arm for not only the tournament that bella toward self because i think that that will be obviously the fight the biltmore hangs his hat on in two thousand eighteen and they're and it's nice to see some exciting points for ballatore as well and one of those exciting point certainly is the welterweight division we're going to get to michael van and page in just a second but dylan danis made a successful debut got a toehold submission victory michael biz ping i gave him his credit but also said on his podcast that dylan danis is a poor second hand over washed handmedown version of conor mcgregor what where do you land with dylan dance i know it's very early days but he's already acting like the man he trains connor helps train conor mcgregor where do you land on dylan dana's right now i.

"Fade or million anco victorious by stoppage victory over frank mir he moves on in the heavyweight grand prix he will be facing jail son in the semifinal round give me that fight tap it to my veins i love what chaleston is doing i am already stoked for this fight man yeah no it's it's definitely fine is probably more fun than frank would have been if we're being honest and fate or looked like old old fate or man i mean the fight was only forty eight seconds listen i carried away but fate or showed what still makes them so dangerous man obviously his composure he's been in there a million times and he is his quick hands man and i quit judo throw that he had of a two hundred sixty pound frank mir i mean that was again it was only forty eight seconds but i i have to be honest i'm kind of worried about shale and that that is a tough matchup in shale is smart and he has no fear i mean the guy has fought john jones and that's one thing i can say is is that as bad as a matchup is this may be i mean it probably can't be as bad as john jones was and john jones in his absolute prime when those two guys fought years ago so i mean jail has been here before he's been he's familiar to this situation but my god man fade or is bigger he's tough to take down he's not necessarily a guy who just gases out you know and this is a thirty second fighter and has done in the first round chelsea on is going to have to be extremely crafty in the semifinals of this heavyweight grand prix i'm excited for this fight particularly overall i'm you know thumbs moderate up for the heavyweight grand prix mostly because of this last fight where where are you on the entire tournament so far i'm high on it i mean it's delivered to my expectations i wouldn't say that it's exceeded them jail rampage fight was was not great roy nelson that material was not great this fight was a whole lot of fine there was only forty eight seconds ryan bater versus king mo is in a week and i.

"Welcome back to the five routes podcast here on espn radio i do want to ask you about a couple of quotes though regarding connor it could be because i thought that was interesting from dana white and from his coach o'reilly as well so regarding conversation could be this is what dana white said if you do a fight that big you gotta do it in vegas could beat will fight in russia at some point but it won't be that fight now owen roddy has said regarding this fight something interesting that they spoke about after the mayweather conor mcgregor boxing fight owen roddy said quote connor turned around to me just after the mayweather fight and said let's talk there's talking fighting khabib i might do it in russia then he says to me we'll do it like rocky will go siberia and we'll train in the snow he was serious dead serious connor does mad things yeah so do you think do you think that's fight is still that interesting to him but he he if wants all the dust settles at that would be as number one focus yeah i mean i've always said that i i am not part of the crowd that thinks connor is you know quote unquote scared of habib you know i think he's probably smart enough to realize it's a tough matchup for but i don't think you get to be conor mcgregor in the situation that he's in and the fights that he's one in the way that he's won them if you don't think that you can go out and beat hubby medoff i just i just don't think that that's possible for for for someone to to reach that level and still be like oh man but i i really better avoid hubby like i said i think he he has to understand that it's a difficult challenging fight but he probably has a lot of confidence in certain things that he can do that habib can't stop so i think that he's interested in the mash up i think he would take the fight as far as being in russia i mean look it would be great to see conor mcgregor in croke park in dublin right i mean why haven't we why haven't we seen that more well the answer is is that the logistics of it you.

"Time with the loss dana white spoke with tmz supports regarding that was my best effort at a at a headline segue there tmz sports regarding conor mcgregor quote he's got to be punished by the law i let's see what happens in new york so i mean i still feel honestly i understand that the ufc is punished conor mcgregor in the past the whole water bottle thing but i just i don't know i feel like i in my head what i envision happening with conor mcgregor is he's going to be acquitted of all legal ramifications and we're going to hear a fight in the next few months maybe even the next week or two after all the legal ramifications have wrapped up that's what i see i guess you hear me say this from time to time on this podcast is like there's no real news here i mean dana dana white was just you know some tmz camera guy shoved in his face like what are you gonna do about conor mcgregor he's like well we'll deal with it you know when when he's done with law like of course they will i think standing here today the most likely thing that's going to happen is we're going to see some sort of like quote unquote punishment you know where where the us's like all we're going to suspend you for such and such amount of time when you know it behind the scenes they know that oh we're you know you're gonna fight after this point anyway or we're gonna find you but hey wink wink nudge nudge we're going to throw you that money back you know i think publicly the oc needs to to figure out a way to say hey yeah we punish this guy but arte at the end of the day you know as well as i do and you said it yourself they can't they can't punish this guy and as much as as much as you and i and everybody else want them to and as and as they should and as much as i think it may even be a good thing for.

"Due to put him into this situation and see how he does and i think he'll receive a lot of publicity for i mean i would honestly rather see nick newell and the contender series and i would i would i would i would see him in a way that a lot of other guys come into the ufc and that's like a short notice replacement you know whether you have see is in a bind and anita wonder fifty five pound fighter like okay nick let's throw you in on short notice on prelims fight until advised i would rather see him be treated in a way that that that matters and that they're like yeah let's let's build something around this dana why contender series fight then just necessarily thrown on some premium or even the ultimate fighter i definitely don't to see him in the autumn it fighter so in a way like i'm totally fine with us and if there's anybody out there saying you know his record deserves to be in the afc well i mean we can make that case for a lot of different guys there are a lot of different people who who right now are not signed that you probably have a point to get into your see and right now nick is getting what he wanted and then as a shot he is getting a very very high high profile direct shot at getting a ufc contract and so i i i'm kind of happy without his played out i don't see anything wrong with it i would have loved to see his first flight on television in the ufc on a pre lymphoid on f s one but i get what you're saying with the building the dana white contender series brand because i'm sure that a lot more a lot more people will watch his fight on that show and maybe stick around to watch more fights on that show so i understand that but i just feel like this is such a tremendous human interest story that it could have been the same fight whoever he's gonna fight could have been on a prelims fight on.

"So i think it's it's oversimplifying to say that he he's been waiting for conor mcgregor this whole time other than a title shot and a fight with conor mcgregor and i know that a lot of people in the community have thrown out just engaged she has a possible name but what would make sense for nate diaz at this point you know i think hp would probably be a consideration would qualify coming off of two losses probably not the best necessarily look bit but no one's gonna care you know that's a fight that a lot of people would care about i've said from the beginning that i think eddie alvarez is is a really that that that's that's the key domino in my in my head i mean if you're able to make that fight that's a fun fight it's a story line around it it's a fun action fight obviously and then you can do a lot of the other things that vision however i know we're going to get to this next headline but you know the is interested in doing the alvarez rematch finally from last may was the contract the way it incontrovertibly so he's expressed interest in tyron woodley publicly to me earlier this year i mean that that's the problem i mean it just goes back it circles back through why has nate set out so long because there's only certain amount of fights it makes sense for him but i would think that.

"He's reached a point now where time has gone by it does not look like you know the conor mcgregor fight is imminent i mean i'm not saying that it couldn't happen and somehow when the dust settles that that's where we end up but he's definitely willing to explore other options and i think that there are a couple out there that at least the ufc can explore and have a real talk about you alluded to it let's get right to it right now headline number two alvarez a to possibility for north of the border in calgary alberta canada that would be july thirtieth a ufc on fox card from the saddledome both men have fought since their fight you have see to eleven which ended in a controversial no contest due to illegal knees from alvarez who was a downed opponent both our top five i fighters in the lightweight division you know didn't benefit from it really i mean eddie was still ranked higher than him he remains ranked higher than dustin you know i but then at the same time like i can't fault eddie for not fighting for not turning around and taking a rematch right away i mean he got an opportunity to coach the ultimate fighter right so so he got that opportunity and then you know facing a guy like just engage who stock was incredibly high you know it's still never lost at that point so this is a rematch where i can understand why dustin has been very very frustrated that eddie hasn't taken it but you can also see why eddie has not taken it well you know i think that the the the question here now is what happens with the hours his contract he has one fight left on his ufc contract he has a certain value in his head that he thinks he's worth you and i have talked about this before.
