Welcome to Cafe Bitcoin. What's up, Peter, Jacob, Nicky, how are you guys doing? Morning. What's going on, man? Still living off the hype from Bitblock Boom. Incredible time. Yeah, it was. I had a good time. I'm still trying to digest yesterday's news. And, you know, just some just some great conversation in yesterday's show, actually. Yeah, we've had a little time to digest the news that Grayscale won his case against the SEC. I think there's been a lot of misinformation from the news about what that actually means. So we can kind of get into that a little bit. But really bullish development. I'll be curious to see what the SEC does now. The ball's in their court. I haven't been able to verify it, but I saw I think it was Bloomberg Intelligence, somebody was tweeting about that Bloomberg Intelligence thinks that we could have an ETF by like next week, which just kind of sounds absurd to me, but something I wanted to bring up. Yeah, I mean, it's definitely in the realm of possibilities. I mean, if the SEC just kind of wipes its hands clean of all this, just kind of rolls over and says, all right, we're going to we're going to prove this spot Bitcoin ETF, you know, finally. We're going to kind of give up on this fight. It's definitely in the realm of possibilities. You know, I find it kind of hard to believe. But and then how would they go about doing that? Do you think they would just kind of do a couple like pick some winners or would they just approve all of these applications at the same time? And it would be kind of a free for all free market competition of who gained market share. And then who would win that market share, do you think? So how do you guys think it's going to play out? I don't care. I'm going to get the popcorn out. You know, the the meme with with Michael Jackson watching Thriller in the in the in the And theater. I'm just going to sit back and watch what happens with FOSS and Terrence and their bets. What is the bet? Would FOSS think that there was going to be an ETF? I forgot. FOSS has a 10 to one or is it a 10 to one or a hundred to one bet with with Joe Carlos Are and I'm I don't remember what Terrence is. I'm sure Terrence has something going on, too, because, you know, he can't he can't miss out on a on a good good wager. Maybe it's a hundred to one. I forget if it's 10 to one. Ant, do you remember? He's down there. Well, if they if they do roll over, let's say that they just roll over, give up on this fight and approve a spot 20 ETF. Personally, I think that they would kind of just approve most of them, if not all of them at the same time. I don't think they want to be picking winners and losers. Now, if they don't do that, it would be curious to see what they do with the grayscale, because, like, obviously they could be a little salty about losing this case and they can turn around and say, OK, well, we're going to approve BlackRock and Fidelity and, you know, and Fasko and then we're going to keep you guys waiting to kind of hurt your business and suck capital out of your fund and into these other ETFs. But, you know, maybe they won't do that. Maybe they'll just approve them all. Like, I'm curious what you guys think. How would that go down? I mean, if that happens, like the pettiness at the end, I think they probably have a massive lawsuit on their hands. I don't know if you guys saw this other news, though, but it was a small Brazilian asset manager called Hashdex applied for US spot Bitcoin approval as well, and it kind of went under the radar. But it's different than all the other ones. And the reason being is they don't have kind of one of these surveillance sharing agreements with Coinbase to prevent market manipulation, like the BlackRock ETF filing or the Fidelity one, all of them, really. Hashdex is different. They're basically an application that allows them to acquire spot Bitcoin through the CME. And so basically it holds a mixture of spot and futures position. So it says the fund will use the CME markets exchange of physical transactions to acquire and dispose of spot Bitcoin instead of transactions on unregulated spot exchanges. And so it's just like a different strategy than all of these other ETF filings. And it's interesting because they brought on Brian Brooks, the former head of the OCC, onto their board of directors recently. And so this Hashdex filing, it's interesting and it's a new entrant into the ETF competition. It sounds like Wall Street trickery to add a few more basis points to the annual expense ratio. Definitely. But it could, you know, it's just like kind of a different approach. So maybe that would be enough for the SEC to be like, OK, you guys are kind of acquiring the Bitcoin through the CME, which is a market of significant size, and they're comfortable with the surveillance that occurs on there. And so perhaps this is enough. And then you have this dark horse Brazilian crypto asset management firm that actually wins the first spot Bitcoin ETF. That would be like, you know, 100 to 1 horse winning the Kentucky Derby or something. Sam, I'm sorry, I'm just not, I don't have the expertise to comment on ETFs or how they're going to play out or what the SEC is going to do. It's, I mean, I'm just going to sit back and watch. It really doesn't affect me one way or another. I self custody my Bitcoin and the price is just going to do what the price is going to do, regardless of what I want or what I do. Talking like a true long term hodler stacker, Peter. I love it. Hey, Dom, good morning. Yeah, I thought that'd be a good cue for me because I have no problem talking about things for which I have no expertise, as if I have expertise. So I just thought that'd be a good cue for me to answer. And good morning, everyone. Good morning. Is he only super quiet to me? No, he's sounding faint like you got to put the mic closer to your mouth or something. How about now? Better? So what do you think, Dom? Any comments for what we were just talking about in terms of the ETFs and any further thoughts around the grayscale news from yesterday? Yeah, interesting little pop and then watching things kind of settle down. I think, you know, again, I'm of this camp that I believe that there's some coordination here and I don't believe that the SEC genuinely wants to prohibit a Bitcoin spot ETF. I believe potentially this coordinated dance is is exactly that. It's a dance and people are trying to line stuff up, time stuff up. I don't know what is being lined up and maybe, you know, I'm just overthinking it, which is very possible. But, you know, I still believe that the pressures from institutions to have access to a Bitcoin vehicle like a spot ETF prior to the halving, the pressure is going to be and has been continuously building. And so I'm of the camp that I think it's coming sooner than later. In fact, you know, I even I gave FOSS that birthday present of, you know, taking half his bet with Joe Carlos, sorry, just for fun. And I think we're looking at this this year could be very wrong, but I think that pressure is building up. So it'll be interesting to see what happens in the near term, whether they I'm kind of curious to see the options the way I understand it. Sam, you probably have a better grasp is there's a few others coming up soon. Potentially we may have some more info on Friday.

First Mission scratched from Preakness by vet 36 hours before Triple Crown race
"Mages path through Triple Crown season is not an easy one. The Kentucky Derby winner opened as the favorite for this weekend's Preakness stakes, but mage will have to top a field that includes Bob Baffert trained national treasure and others to become the first horse to take the first two Triple Crown races since justify in 2018. The race changed when top contender first mission was scratched early Friday, leaving only 7 to run. "There was game over, but mendelssohn had destroyed them in the UE Derby and looked, was a breeder scope juvenile turf winner looked to be a real superstar going to Churchill, and it just didn't happen. He ended up finishing last beyond justify. Do you think that that forum can translate from the Middle East and Japan to North America Mark? Now, before this year's Dubai World Cup meeting, I've been quite skeptical about the Japanese dirt horses. But the last year or two, they've started buying a better quality of horse. They're overall quality of dirt races as improved. And of course they won the World Cup itself, didn't they? On World Cup night. Now the Japanese are starting to dominate world turf racing. And they're potentially now starting to catch up with America in the dirt states as well. And look, I'm not saying dermis any kind of mortal locker or anything like that. I just thought in a week year with a horse who's got a very adaptable run style coming off an impressive win and a jockeying Christophe lemaire who is without doubt one of the very, very best in the world, he was worth taking a shot at double figure odds. Can we get the AI? To edit this when derma Sutter wins. So that it actually sounds like Mark didn't say I'm not saying he's a mortal lock too. This thing's a mortal lock, a solid moral can't be beat. Because it's all about the clicks and the engagement. I think that's a very, very valid point. And I like the pace angle as well that you're going with one who becoming masterpiece and one who will be on the front end. Naomi from your perspective being over stateside. What is the atmosphere been like in the vibe has been like about the Japanese raiders? So I do have to agree that OC has performance was incredibly strong in the UAE Derby. I think my worry with him and the reason I ended up not using him is due to the fact that this is a very different surface than what they saw in me. And I talked with the Japanese writer via translator about that as well. Shout out to Kate. She's best. Always a fun experience when you have to use a translator to conduct your interviews. No, I mean, Kate hunter just she always helps them a lot. I think the worry is that the tracks are just, the tracks are looser in Japan. They're looser because they're more sand based. They're basically just sand and here obviously it's more dirt based. And that is slightly different. And when I look, I think Durham city is talented enough to win it. But the thing is I was looking at him going around, I'm just not sure he's going to put in his best performance at this track. I might be wrong because he's translated from his performances in Japan to a decent third in the Saudi Derby and Saudi Arabia. Two made and so clearly he can take a show on the road. And I just haven't been as taken with him seeing him on the track in the morning. So I guess that's just kind of the knock I have. He might go on to win The Kentucky Derby now after I said that. But that was that's a vibe I'm getting. Oh, so you have continue are. He's just a little bit more of that underdog. There has been chats by people saying, you know, tactics is he going to go to set it up for dermato. I don't think that's what they should be doing with continuer. I know he's on the outside. I think he's going to use up all his energy if they want to go and send him to the front. I think that would not work out for him at all. So I hope they don't, because you're in it to do well for yourself, right? I would have loved to have seen in the Derby who's currently second on the AE list, Mandarin hero. Now that I would have enjoyed seeing the Darwin just because he ran into Santa needs Adobe just got beaten by prato move in that blanket finish, did get a little bit of trouble got bumped around a little bit. I thought that was such a great state that debut. That really pricked my ears. So I would have enjoyed seeing Mandarin hero. I just I don't think it will happen. I mean it's Thursday right now. I hope I hope nothing will happen. Let me phrase this differently. I hope. Nothing will happen to any of the current runners that causes them to drop out of the Derby, and he would have to have two drop out to come in. So I don't think he will look at Japan has been incredibly incredibly strong state site as of recent years. And that could very well translate in an inaugural Kentucky Derby win. I just haven't been as taken by the leading contender here for them in dermatology. So I ended up not using him. I do want to agree with Mark tap it trace was my second choice. I love that bluegrass race. I think he's very talented. It's such an efficient mover as well. If you ever want to watch his workouts with a media green on top, the way it's just no wasted action and the way he switches lasers so efficient. So I'd love to see him do well. They're my top two. So yeah, we'll see how things pan out. Well, let's get confirmation of your box exact and trifectas beginning with Naomi. You've given us the front too, but what is your trifecta for The Kentucky Derby in order of preference? So yeah, verifying the number two is my top choice. I tap it, try the number 5 in second. Did land on using 40 in third, the number 15 because I felt like I was going to kick myself if he was the favorite anyone and I didn't even look at it. Look, he can win. He can. It's just a Kentucky Derby and anything can happen like I highlight. And then I use mage underneath. The number 8 who nearly looked like he had the better of 40 in the Florida Derby in his first grade one star in his third career lifetime stop. This horse has so much upside. The question is, can you handle a 20 horse field will he be ready for this? Will he be able to get out the gate a touch faster in that Florida door he was also just a little slow, which isn't his style. Like he jumped better in the fountain of youth on debut he even put

"Of years. Obviously, the Bali doil hate machine has gone into overdrive about August rodan and his potential to be a Triple Crown winner. Obviously it would be quite appropriate because the first leg of the Triple Crown on coronation weekend wouldn't it. And little big bear who was the best two year old on figures that we saw last season without a doubt attempting to stretch his stamina out to a mile. We've also got Charles D, who we spoke about, didn't we? Not so long ago and he's a new breed the back or with Frankie the Tori heading out the side door. We've also got that there's more depth here than just those three isn't that we've got sakhir from roger varian's yard, who looks a really, really good two year old and a potentially above average three year old, a good one, two punch from Charlie appleby, and indestructible who took the who took the main trail for this race, the craven. So I think we've got real depth for this year's 2000 guineas, and I'd be hopeful that we're going to see an above average winner. Yeah, I think we are going to see an above average winner, and hopefully that's going to be the case. Certainly the top end of the market looks quite exciting. You can see assuming that people are still blindly following the sport and the animal rights protesters haven't got into their heads and turned them all against us. A gamble developing on royal Scotsman just because of the name. But in terms of August wrote an I'm not entirely certain about this old Triple Crown thing. Cue him absolutely destroying his rivals in the 2000 guineas now, but that question and the way it was phrased to him was, is there a horse in the R two can win the Triple Crown? And the only one that realistically could do that is August roden. Little big bear isn't going to stay a mile for. And certainly won't be staying a mile 6. And they didn't have anything else entered in the race that could have gone down that route. And so it was a pretty open question. It wasn't just that Aidan O'Brien himself said, we're confident he'll win the guineas, we're bullish about the Derby and the lads will have to seriously consider the Triple Crown then. What do you make of that assessment? I'm not downplaying his ability, but winning a group one over a mile as a two year old when you've got a middle distance pedigree is very, very different to winning a classic over a mile when you're going to be going up against a fast winner of the Jew Hurst and the stable companion who is literally the European champion juvenile. And it's worth pointing out that those two wins over a mile at the back end of last year came on deep ground, didn't they particularly the doncaster futurity, which was run on heavy ground and everything about his pedigree suggests he's a middle distance horse, doesn't it rather than a speedy Milo. And when punting basically prices

Despite the name, there have only been two winners in history who finished the mile and a quarter race under the two minute mark. In 2001, monarch coast finished with a time of one 59.97. And in 1973, the great secretariat clocked in at one 59.4, the fastest time ever for The Kentucky Derby, but a big Derby win does not guarantee future success. Of the winners with the fastest Derby times only secretariat won the Triple Crown. Mix yourself a mint julep and check out the big race this afternoon. Okay, I will. It's been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And while that may be true, it wasn't for Coca-Cola in the early 1900s. Its product was so popular that dozens of knockoff beverages had hit the market and were cutting into Koch's business. They decided the best way to combat this was to create a distinctive bottle. This new design not only made it stand out in a crowd, it quickly became so recognizable that people could look at it and immediately associate it with the brand. On national packaging design day, take a moment to appreciate the thought that goes into the boxes and bottles we see every day that put those products above the rest. You want me to just keep asking about fanfares for the next two minutes and cast please play. Are you okay? All right. Sounds good. All right. Well, I used to have Ah, I used to have fanfare. That's a good way to kill a minute on the radio. Did you see that? The winner of the Kentucky Derby Lance Armstrong, their way to a victory allegedly allegedly Ah, So this, uh this horse Medina Spirit one And it gave the trainer is seventh Kentucky Derby win Ah week ago, Right May 1st over a week ago and then failed the drug test. So they do a drug test before the running of the race, And then they run the race. They're like, Congratulations. Your horse one and every one of the bet on this horse to win goes and collects all their winnings. And then they come back later and they go. Oh. Oh, your horse. Your horse was found to have steroids in its legs. Now the steroids were talking about her anti inflammatories like you might get. In your name near your elbow or shoulder. Whatever else it might be. I've had him in my foot before for planter fasciitis, So it's a long it's in that family, right? The whole idea behind making sure that the horses aren't taking the steroids is Horses shouldn't be in pain so that they would need anti influence inflammation steroids, So if the horses are in pain and would need such a thing That means that there's a problem with the animal so animal probably shouldn't be running on that. But it looks like this animal was running on it. There is a second test coming in. The sample was taken. Two samples were taken The first test, said elevated levels of this quarter's old steroid the second test repenting results If the second test comes through the disqualifications gonna go through in that horse is gonna lose. And if you bet on that horse to win the Kentucky Derby, you We'll get to keep your winnings. Actually, that's how that works. So betters get to keep it, but the horse would then lose on their winnings. That's the way it works. I just kind of wonder. And what point are we no longer interested in horse racing? It's such a snooty sport, isn't it? Think of the snooty assed sports out there. Horse racing and what yachts Right? What about the snooty assed You can get, except yachts don't involve beating an animal. So maybe you should take a good look at horse racing. If we have to dope, the horses keep going. It's called the peninsula's and that is where legend has it bad. If not invented at dennis the old-fashioned was certainly popularized. And i put on a menu by a bartender by the name of tom bullock. And so it's always been louisville's drink will in two thousand fifteen. The city recognized that named the official cocktail. And so like. I said when thursday started becoming more popular locals day at the track a group of people lose billions as we would call them petition. Churchill to name the old-fashioned the official drink of the thursday before dirty which they also named a. I think it's a bit of a silly name. I'll i'll say i usually not say it. S still called the thursday before derby but some people like to call it. I love it soon. You will have a drink for everything day of the week before the derby. I'll petition for a whisky. Sour nets anything with bourbon. I'm happy so can you tell when. It's a kentuckian or louisville ian drinking the mitchell up act the race you drinking in a certain style at the rates. Can you just tell who's who's a local and who isn't the reason i'm laughing can say yes. It usually is at the track often. Only the people out of town drinking the. Oh my gosh no shot because i will tell you most billions would probably say they were asking removed you love it. They would say hold amid. Just give me the bourbon and ice plenty. I wonder how many are sold as well and it. You know a lot of times. It's because at the track and they're trying as hard as they can. But that figure that i gave you a hundred twenty thousand be privileged and to be efficient. They're being served in this trae fashion so by the time. You get your gillette. Because you've never had one you might think it's the most refreshing wonderful thing you've ever had your life in your at churchill downs in your you'd bucket list you're at the derby so it's going to be wonderful to you. You're gonna hear angels singing when you drink. But kentucky's have had it at home with their aunts mint juleps syrup that his steeped overnight and poured into a sterling silver half and then dusted with powdered sugar and freshman it right out of the garden. That's a whole different experience So again most of the people at the track are probably from hometown. Do so answered my question. I was going to ask how locals actually drink it and when they actually drank it other than the derby i would say. Locals at home are drinking editor derby party. And then there's a couple of places in louisville that. I like to go when i'm really hot and i'm in the mood for that. I might go to the brown hotel where they also serve it in a silver mint juleps. Silver dollar is a nice have a honky tonk right whiskey bar and they serve a very nice cold one with Glass glitz all frothy. Or if you're taking guests to the kentucky derby museum. They have dirty cafe and so a lot of people might be taking their guests to the dern museum while they're in town and have one then but think most billions are gravitating towards that old fashioned. Just a little more simple most of the time in in in summer when when you actually have that fresh mint in your yard cut it just sounds divine. So are there any fun facts. That you haven't told me already about the mitchell up or the kentucky derby or them together where i can think of one more that we didn't talk about and that was how the mint julep.

Two to my favorite topics i am and that will become evident. I think throughout our conversation might even stacey. It's an i am a vice president of marketing negations or a company called global tourism. Which is our tourism marketing agency here from the city of global otherwise known as the derby study for the bourbon city. Assu been doing this for quite a while that previously to this my job was at the kentucky derby festival so i know my way a little bit around the actual kentucky derby and of course. It's most names. Drink the magilla great now. I think we have to start with a little bit of a history of the kentucky derby absolutely i derby was actually held in eighteen. Seventy five at is the longest annually helds ordering events in north america. wifi that even during covid it was one of the only events that was still held within the calendar year was pushed from its traditional may running to september running last year. So this is as close as we've ever had to derby's back to back when it's who we run this year but started in eighteen seventy five and it was actually the from inspiration from the epsom darby and it was the grandson of william clark of lewis and clark fame famous explorers of the west here in america. It was his grandson colonel. Mary weather lewis. Clark that had gone to the darby and some other races in france. When he was in europe he loved the idea this and he purchased some land from his uncle's the churchill's jokes and henry churchill the eighteen seventies and formed the jockey club so this was where the first derby was held on the grounds which zoric churchill downs is today. But it wasn't called kava. Will jockey club. And the first in that race was aristocracies. It still at churchill downs. Today you can go. Always have air studies on when plaque. And then they'll have the current derby winner on the other and famously famously. Until more recent years it was a black jockey that when that i is was oliver a ruse in fact. We're just now starting to tell these stories more in america that the sport was dominated by a black jockeys within the first twenty years in existence. So a story. That was not told for many years. But really bring that back to light back. There's a whole new tour at the kentucky derby museum where you can go back in time. And we live those right tales from after protraying his jockeys. So what a history there. And it's been run ever since the mid general really didn't start. Even though the met. Jill has a much longer history. It wouldn't be introduced into the kentucky derby roar until nineteen thirty eight but we've been drinking toasting mint juleps at the kentucky derby officially since nineteen thirty. A right now to go back to the middle of itself. Can you tell me a little bit of the history of that cocktail itself sure. It's kind of like pimento cheese. As in the staying at many people were probably making it around the same time and in the south and it just kind of one of those things that is in the southern. Hanan if you will. That's kind of the story behind the magilla. It is traced the actual word julep which was first they think maybe july on which is a of spanish arabic or persian descent and it meant do lamb that rosewater and they think it was just medicinal. You mixed spirits. That you know have been made back then with with something herbal. And that was caught a jew lab so then come to america and they did have spirits and some of those early cocktails mixing herbs and sugar with some of these spirits. Because they're not quite spirit that we know today. They were minneapolis tasty. So you did want to mix things with them to make o. Tastier so the story. That i've heard goes that in. This part of the south actually kentucky was once heart of the larger state of virginia before. Thomas jefferson ranted to the comic kentucky but this region. We have a lot of horse trainers and this is why the tide of the derby. They would get up very early to train their horses and they wanted a refreshing morning during and so they would add the sugar and then the mint was a native plant ear inn and grows very obviously answer. They would infuse the meant and the sugar into their whisky and this became over time than it julep. So that was this morning during that you might have. If you're societas with the horses. I think it was a tradition. All those years as people were racing horses and a lot of places but always this annual kentucky derby it wouldn't be until nineteen three when a gentleman by the name of colonel matt wind would become involved with ritual downs and the kentucky derby and he was kind of like the p.t barnum of his day. I'm told a he's a great marketer and it would be. During his time that the kentucky derby would grow to more national prominence and then certainly by the thirties at international prominence. But it wouldn't be until nineteen thirty eight the traditional would actually name it. The official drink of the kentucky derby. I don't know how many juleps are gone through in the entire state of kentucky much more than this but at churchill downs alone because they have a way to track these things they know how much is in meant. They're supplying say that they make a hundred and twenty thousand mint juleps during kentucky derby weekend low just the weekend. Well let me tell you. I would much prefer to have mitchell than orange juice in the morning so.
