"An online version of balance program. And he worked through it. Nick has some experience with this. He actually has gone through your programs. Wow. Yeah. Wow. This is like the big reveal at the end of the episode. Oh my God, are we half brothers, too? So what happened? I was, I was sent your program actually by my therapist and everything started to click. Wow. And you know, I think I had run down so many other things that I realized that there's not something physically wrong with my body. Were you able to get better? Yeah, yeah. Wow. Nick watched videos of Allen walking people through these sessions. And he learned to practice this himself. Noticing his pain, sitting with it and redefining it. And I'd feel it, but because I could finally accept that there was nothing physically wrong, it didn't spiral. It didn't escalate. It didn't get worse. It just stayed at that kind of like, okay, this is the baseline level of a twinge in my back or something. You kind of broke the pain fear cycle and eventually it just kind of fades because you took away its fuel source. Yeah, it's so crazy how it fades. It really is. And that sounds like it was kind of a breakthrough. Yeah. I mean, then I started to get confident, you know? Oh. This is it. And then it just got silly. What do you mean? It just run around my apartment. I would just jump and skip and dance around my apartment. This is not something I would have done before. I was jumping and dancing and laughing, just like laughing at how ridiculous I was being, but also laughing 'cause I was proving it at the same time. You know, like, you're strong. I mean, one time I threw myself into the wall by X like I'm talking about like really thrashing around just like shaking my body like really just like you do not need to feel this way, like stop it right now. That's science versus. Hello. Hi, Nick, del rose. Associate producer at science versus? Hello. How are you? How are you feeling? I'm doing well. I'm back to swimming. I'm now I'm running. And finally, I'm back to reading. And reading in the park a lot. Oh, great. What are you reading? Oh, actually, I just read Alan's new book. It's called the way out. The way out. He explains his therapy and how it works. Great. How many citations are in this week's episode? It is a 110 citations. That's a lot. If people want to see a 110 citations, where should they go? I can follow the link in our show notes to our transcripts. Thanks, Nick. Yes. Bye. Bye. "Stupidity last forever. And so we had a few politicians that were still joycelyn was doing what she'd come to Washington to do. Bringing up these taboo topics that America needed to be talking about. And then everything went kablooey. It all started on December 1st, 1994. Jocelyn was giving a speech at the world aids day conference at the UN. After her speech, she was asked about what we should do to prevent HIV from spreading. And specifically, someone wanted to know whether promoting masturbation might help to give people sexual release. So they wouldn't have sex. And joycelyn said, yeah, she advocated for complete sexual education, which would include masturbation. Here's the audio from that conference. And regard to masturbation, I think that that is something that it's a part of human sexuality and it is a part of something that perhaps should be taught. It was just such a tiny comment. People got all upset, nobody could believe that masturbation happened. And I think if everybody who ever masturbated would turn green, we'd have a green society. Even today, Jocelyn doesn't get why it's such a big deal to talk about winking. It won't make you go crazy. It won't make you go blind. And you know, you're having sex with somebody you love. Yeah. So you didn't think anything of it. So when was the first time you realized this might have been a bigger controversy? A reporter flew from Washington D.C. with me to New York. We had lunch together and then he told me. He said, if he thought that I was going to be a problem for Bill Clinton, he was any question that anybody asking me when I would answer truthfully and fully tell the poor politician, but a very good public health expert. And so when Bill Clinton calls you, do you remember what he said in that call? Well, the first call was not from Bill Clinton, and it was from Leon Panetta. Leon Panetta was The White House chief of staff at the time, and he asked joycelyn to resign. And I told him that, no, I wasn't going to resign. I was going to resign or Bill Clinton followed me. He reminded me that Bill Clinton, you know, the president didn't have time to talk to me. And I told him I was wrong with design until he did. There was no way I was going to resign, a walk up and leave on the basis of how it helped out the same. He would he asked me to come to be the Surgeon General. He would have to ask mentally. And so well, about an hour or two later, he did come. And he said, he said he wanted my resignation. On the secretary's death by tool clock. And so I said, mister president, do you know what I said? And he said, yes, be told, I said, but do you know, but actually, you know, he assured me that yes he did. Is that because you suspected he didn't know, because if he knew there's no way he would fire you based on such a small office. It never occurred to me. The content, but fire me. He knew what I was about. He heard me say things like that before. So but, you know, things were different. And I realized that and so I just said, thank you, mister president. What was going through your mind when you hung up the phone? What was going through my mind? I still couldn't believe that he asked many resign. I couldn't believe that that had happened. I felt that he would, his arm had been pressed by others. You've said that when you got to Washington, you felt like prime steak, but you left feeling like a low grade hamburger. That's true. Did you do you think that if a white man had said what you said, you would have he would have been fired? I don't know. See, I'm not sure that a white man would have ever said that. It needed to be said, but I'm not sure that a white man would have said that. You say some of the things that I was saying really took a black woman to say I was thinking I was speaking my mother's truth. It wasn't about being a politician. It was that about getting the job done or whatever I had to do. I didn't even think about. I didn't know enough at the time to think about the politicians and their problems. After she was pushed out, joycelyn went back to Arkansas to her job as a professor. And she continued doing her research and fighting for better sex Ed. Which actually she's still doing today at the age of 88. But despite joycelyn's hard work, these days in the U.S., sex education is still hidden miss. Most states require that abstinence be stressed, sex education policies. And while teen pregnancy rights have gotten a lot better since joycelyn was the Surgeon General. The U.S. still has the highest rate of teen pregnancy among similar countries. In these days, people tell Jocelyn, she's been right all along. And, you know, even said, well, doctor elders, if we listen to you, we wouldn't be in this mess now. You know, my mom always helped tell us. Always tell the truth. Is the day you see the truth and cease to speak is the day you begin to die. I tell people all the time. You can tell, I'm gonna live a long time. Thank you, thank you so so much for your time. Thanks for having Jody very much. Thank you. That's science versus. If you want to hear more from Jocelyn, then I reckon you should go listen to the podcast, 70 over 70. It's interviews with people who are over 70. And it's really, really wonderful and they've recently done an episode with Joyce lynda's too. "Good. It's good I think. They'd coach appreciate that joining us now on our I advantage hotline coach Jeff. Lender of the Wyoming cowboys coach, my friend how are you? That was a good leader right there. You know always appreciate a little Bon Jovi with wanted dead or alive getting a little pumped up for the season. Does that does that work I mean? Is that what you guys are GonNa? Blair a few times and practice at some point. You know what we we mix it up the place she'd every day. So that's that's good. Money can't play that every day, but we'll We'll do a little bond job their renowned now. Yeah. I, think you have to at some point coach. Crazy Times for sure you guys get rolling with practice last week are you starting to feel again adjustments for a coach at a new school too I mean there's so many different things for you heading into the season. Are you starting to Canada hunker down though and get a feel of somewhat normalcy? Well Luckily for us we have I mean we've been able to practice since July twentieth. So unlike probably were Code Smiley and some of the guys down there in Colorado with amazing how just one step across the border can change things and we've been fortunate over to where we've laxed a workout. So when you know in college a- college basketball these days, it's such a long season and in back in the day, the first practice meant something well, nowadays, the first practice usually that equals about practice number. Thirty or forty based off of what you did in the summer of the fall and how much of a benefit like you said so many different So different compared to where we are here with you and see what's going on with C. UCS you where you are in Wyoming being able to get those workouts, get all that scheduled going in the summer just like you know kind of a normal off season, I mean especially for you jumping in with a new program and had to be extremely beneficial. It taking a new programming to have the opportunity to where you have those extra days. You need every day that you can get I mean that's and that's the biggest thing that I've been. Preaching to our guys is just you know the fact that just showing up every day and an understanding the effort that you have to put into to be good at this level and that was You know the fortunate part you know having been at UNC and sometimes you forget it's kind of like a woman being pregnant you. If you probably remember what was like giving birth, you probably would never got pregnant again and it's Kinda goes the same thing you take over do job. Is that you forget luckily coach tweezers around because he'll remind me like you know it wasn't just cupcake and sunshine every day our first year. UNC and it's just but it's a process of just every day of of just showing up and putting in the work and understanding that the you know the coaches I mean we're going to show. Up Every day and the standard is gonNA show up every day and we're not gonNA lower it, and fortunately for me, I kept the right four guys when I got the job and then you bring in a bunch of freshmen and some in some junior college players and they have no idea what it takes to win this level. So you need all. You need every minute you can get from a practice standpoint in. That's far. They've done a really good job and You know it's not gonna be one of those things where we figured out overnight but gradually over time, we'll get better and better I'm glad you brought that up to your time with you and see that very first year coach. I'll never forget you know that this program was in a very difficult spot because of the the situation that had happened before we all know that story. There's the sanctions against this program. So keeping is convincing guys to stay with this team. You knowing that knowing you weren't gonNA be able to compete in the postseason. Those were very difficult times and do you feel like that season really helps you prepare for? What you've gone through so far in jumping over to Wyoming. There's no, there's no question I mean it's I didn't go through that experience where you take over a program that for lack of better word was in disarray. And to come here, where know I think from a coach Edwards editor's job in terms of a great guy and they did a lot of good things. just unfortunately You know as much as you know, we talked you know coaches keep their jobs are certain results and we were measured by wins off. So you know for me to have to you know to just know that it's you know to be for me. It's hard to be patients Harper precociously patient but just oh, that having gone through that first year UNC that you're not gonNA just change it in one day and and so you can't lose your mind. You can't lose your mind on your players and fortunately fortunately for me when I was at UNC, I, mean to have Steve and do we. Coach Magee T to have those guys coaching staff that I did you know we just just every day we showed up and we just say, let's find a way to get better know that hey, better times are coming and let's get those younger guys Jd Joan. kyw. The experience that they need, and then now you add spy Johnson and Tanner Morgan her read certain and now you got chance to win twenty six games and. Win The league, and so I thought we did a really good job and credits. You know coach Smiley Costa and those guys they were just big apart as I was and That's what we're. GonNa try to do here with the Costa Weeds and coach Wicks coach, Vanderberg GonNa, try to change it in a hurry. We're talking to Wyoming head men's basketball coach Jeff Lender, and you know look at this team last year coach with Wyoming. A rough season overall I think like nine and twenty four or something like that. But the mountain West Conference did play out. It was one of the conferences that did finish before cove really shut everything down and what did they do? They went on and surprised a few teams I mean they beat Ceus you who was a really really good team last year I think surprised a lot of people and then Nevada, of course winning seventy, four, seventy one. So when you look at that, you feel you got to feel better about situation on. All right. There's a base, this team kind of showed that they were getting better down the stretch in and some of the most important games. And they gave Utah Story. I may gave them a run for their money and there was a tight game pretty much with two minutes left and no, and that's where for me just to build off of that momentum and to you know for God like quantum marble, who's who's from the Denver area played really well down the stretch hundred. Datta. was definitely not one hundred percent by the time the conference term came around but he's an all league guy and then Kenny Foster Hundred Thompson, or two guys that you know I feel like the way that I wanNA play from an offensive standpoint We're really good fits and so to to have those four guys. Back off of what they did and then you add some really talented young guys who still don't know how hard it is to win games was level, and then just the discipline and effort that you need over the course of a hundred and fifty possession than the game to win You know that's the challenge but you know excited excited for the challenge in excited for the opportunity that hopefully we have this year which God God only knows what what was eventually end up looking like. But hopefully, we can get as many games in his possible. Yeah. You mentioned the the newcomers to this roster that I mean, you didn't waste any time. Top, ranked class as far as the mountain West Conference I. Mean That's incredible to me coach. You didn't waste any time getting rolling there and bringing in a new generation of cowboys. Well I mean it's you know rankings or you know those don't mean anything once you get here. So I try to make sure people don't. It's it's nice to be recognized but at the same time I, mean the real work starts when you get here, everybody's no one cares if you're five star one star I mean look at that team we had UNC last year that was. Really, really good. Those three starting guards, jona roundabout, Trent hairs, Matt Johnson they all started as walk on and so at the other day just trying to find you know the type of kids that Fit University of Wyoming and I think that's the one thing we did a really good job of at the University of Colorado is just is finding the right type of kids and. Fit what we wanted to do not just from a basketball standpoint but..

Jalen Ramsey trade grades: Rams complete cornerback overhaul

"The rams have made a nother monster trade and this time they've traded for the best player available on the trade market Jalen Ramsey generally considered the best cover corner in the NFL extremely unhappy in Jacksonville it has been asking for a trade for weeks yeah is on his way to the ramps it is being reported by multiple sources now including Adam Schefter that the rams are acquiring jalen Ramsey for two first round picks a first round pick in twenty twenty a first round pick in twenty twenty one and a fourth round pick in twenty twenty one three total draft picks including two number ones all right king of the Ramle what he is saying I I'm so as soon as I traded Marcus Peters I thought are you initially said wait a minute keep Ta- Leib Injured Reserve yesterday Marsha I have no corner they have no corners could this be Jalen Ramsey and you're right yes it is Jalen Ramsey this is what I love about less need and Kevin often the ramps are constantly pushing their chips to the middle of the table you know three and three did not look good after that loss to San Francisco major upgrade to the defense ager upgraded the defense and by the way they also added a pretty good linebacker and Kenny foster and they added an offensive Lineman in Austin corporate earlier today for the Cleveland browns they are they are trying to accumulate Talat to turn this around at one correction you said Kenny foster it's Kenny Young's thirty on Kenny went to Ucla and was great at Ucla she was What's interesting now is what do I always pound on the table with the doctor bus pounded into me star driven town Yes star driven town star driven town no matter what you say star Driven Town Yep the rams now have five different players who are the top paid player at their position Jared Goff Yup uncooked. Yup Todd Gurley Aaron Donald and we assume jalen Ramsey we assume this trade is being made with the idea that Ramsey will sign a long term. term gas contract because if not it's all it's a lot to give up that is a lot every time the rams have wanted to sign somebody to a long term deal they've gotten because remember Marcus Peters on his fifth year option and there was plenty of speculation that the rams were not going to extend him now they've got a younger more accomplished cornerback in Jalen Ramsey who I think there's a much higher comfort level in signing for the long term and by the way he's going to be fun to talk to fun to cover he's a fascinating guy he's not afraid of a great quote and he also happens to be arguably the best cover corner in the NFL well and you have a guy like this it basically takes away half the field yes you just have to defend the other half 'cause you know Jalen Ramsey can guard the elite wide receivers that put him on an island silent or Dion island that's this guy and he's not even twenty five years old
