"He would have done it if he could have. But among voters in the crowd here at kenesaw, there was not a ton of clamor for Pence to get in the race just yet. It was not because of their overwhelming love for Trump necessarily, but more of a sense of weariness from the whole era. I don't think it's good for Kemp to be campaigning with pets. He just reminds us how divided the Republican Party here is at a time when we can't afford to be. Says Ryan coven, a 22 year old psychology student at nearby kennesaw state university, and a former campaign worker for Republicans two years ago. Pence has some nerve being up here with Kemp, he should never show his face. Asked if Pence a former conservative radio host should be considering a 2024 run. There was zero hesitation from COVID. Absolutely not. That was also the sentiment from 78 year old elva dornbush, a retired government hand from kennesaw, who would prefer desantis as the nominee. Pence should definitely not run. But Pence was widely seen as a top tier candidate in this crowd, even among the Pence skeptics. The vice president is not Georgia. Brian Kemp is Georgia, but to be honest, Pence and desantis would be the frontrunners in 2024, says Jay Neal, a 58 year old public employee who traveled over an hour from chickamauga. What about Trump? I hope he doesn't run. He's too divisive. Pence, who has run his campaigns from the ledger and not the heart, would not entertain a run if he couldn't win. Where Trump ran on his gut, pence's circle of consultants runs their efforts on math, although Pence is a man of deep personal faith, prayers are no substitutes for ballots, and he has never been one to mistake the two. Do I think he can get elected? I'd be for him, but there's too much Trump in the party, says bova, his childhood friend. More than that, the party may just have two little pence left in it. No matter his enviable talents..

The Brutal Power of Teachers' Unions With Corey DeAngelis
"Talk to us about the role of the unions, how they behave, how they intimidate and also give us a fair picture of the teachers, not all of them want to be pro BLM neo marxists today. Yeah, you can be pro teacher and be anti teachers unions because the teachers union bosses like Randy weingarten often don't push for policies that benefit the great teachers that already exist in the public school and private school classrooms. You have Randy weingarten making over 9 times the average teacher salary in the U.S.. Right, because teachers about 50 grand. Yeah, 50 60 grand on average. Over 500. Owned $570,000. And if you look just at the trends over time, I mean, you've got to look at the data since 1970, per people education expenditures in the United States after adjusting for inflation increased by about a 152% in the U.S.. But average teacher salaries only increased by about 8% in real terms. So we're throwing more and more money into the system. It's going to the superintendents and administrative votes. They're associate deans of diversity in blah, blah, blah, right? And so that's good for teachers union bosses like Randy weingarten because that means more dues paying members. If you just paid the teachers better, especially the ones that are doing a good job, well, you don't get an additional dues paying member. And so that means less money for the teachers that are doing a good job, more money for the union bosses and union leadership. Another report by Ben schaffer at kennesaw state university looked between the years of 1992 and 2014 similarly finding nationwide an increase in about 27 per people education expenditures in real terms, whereas teacher salaries over that period actually dropped by 2% after adjusting for inflation. So again, he said the same thing that there's a staffing surge, they're putting more people into the buildings. We saw this with COVID as well. The latest budget numbers I've seen with Los Angeles public schools, they were planning to increase their perpetual education expenditures over the past couple of years by about 69%,

"John, bob, I'm glad to have you with us today on dot com's podcast. It's not going to be with you. Have you called my friend? I guess that's what happens when you share your waffle House menu selections. You really become tight with somebody. Well, you know, when we get to be friends, you know, when I tell you what to order at waffle House, then we've got it down there. Hey, as we get started, one of the things I love to do in this podcast and when I do especially people politicians, I do media people is everybody knows us and I found this to be true and I think you probably have as well. If they see us in the airport or they see us have they know us from this right here, they know it from the camera if you would. They don't know the background. So span just a few minutes telling us, you know, where are you from? How you got here and just give us a good taste of who you are. Well, I'm from Marietta, Georgia originally. I was born actually my parents live in kennesaw when I was born. And we moved to Tampa pretty quickly thereafter and live there for 8 years, but moved back to Marietta when I was 8 years old. And from 8 years on all the way through my 5 years at the university of Georgia and there after my first job in television was in Augusta, Georgia was my home. I love it. I love the braise. I love the dogs. Having the Olympics there was fantastic as well. And it was just, you know, I think I lived there in a perfect time when the state to me, we learned about a three pillars, right? Wisdom justice and moderation. And all three things were readily available to me. Growing up in Marietta, I went to Davis elementary middle school and Lassiter high school for those folks to know. But it was such a great community because people were moving to Atlanta from all over the place. My parents were actually from the northeast, my dad settled in Atlanta in the 70s with my mom when we moved back there, but at that time in the late 80s, early 90s Atlanta was such a boom town and we had people from all over the place. And it was just such a great melting pot of different Americans and all kinds of folks, different races and religions. And I really felt like I had a wonderful public school experience and when it came time for college, the only thing I knew is that I wanted to go to an SEC football school. My dad went to graduate school at the university of Florida, and he took me to a game when I was four years old. It was a Florida Miami game. And it was one of my earliest memories, and I just love the whole thing. And then, you know, my sister went to auburn, and I was spent some time with her at all. My older sister, and I was like, this place is great. All these people are so nice on the planes. And I was like, it's a little boring though. And then finally, I didn't think I was gonna get into Georgia but I did get in and I went there and I had a bunch of buddies of mine who are you older than me in high school that went there and I spent some time with them and the moment I walked on campus I knew I was

"A false alarm In the middle of a crisis like this we'd put no it was a false alarm or would he jump to the wrong conclusion Even if the short range battlefield nukes are still on the shelf thousands of Russian and American long arranged missiles are ready to launch in just minutes And that threat hangs over everything as the conflict in Ukraine drags on Jeff bromfield and PR news Commercial airline pilots are overwhelmingly white and male Now amid a severe pilot shortage the commercial airline industry it's all things considered on 90.1 WAB I'm Jim burris And you are listening to all things considered It's a pleasure to have you along this afternoon The Russian invasion of Ukraine now moving into day four and 5 and while the images coming from the area are numerous there is another conflict going on One that you can't exactly see because well it's happening online The FBI recently released an advisory that pushes all U.S. corporations especially critical infrastructure networks to have a heightened awareness of potential Russian cyberattacks Cybersecurity expert Andy green is an assistant Professor of information security and assurance at kennesaw state university And I spoke with him earlier today and asked him what does a Russian cyber threat to the U.S. even look like So we've got a twofold concern One would be direct nation state activity directly carried out by the Russian government The second would be individuals or groups who are indirectly sanctioned by the Russian government They think that it may be in their professional best interest to do something to provide a service as twisted as it may be to their government overlords who provide them protection We've seen a public situation already with the kantai ransomware group putting out a press release stating that they firmly sided with the Russian government and that they were going to be taking steps to cause pain and inflict damage on anybody who supported either directly or indirectly the Ukraine government and the Ukrainian people during this war Of those two kind of possibilities which one is a bigger threat in your view We almost look at threats from private threat act groups like the ransomware groups As just the cost of doing business for lack of a better way to phrase it and we see scenarios where if a firm is attacked and they suffer damage they know how to deal with that because that's what they do on a daily basis If we've got a scenario where private actors that are not directly state sponsored engage in activities against critical infrastructure let's say gas electricity what have you then the scope of potential inconvenience and damage grows Is there a way to predict the next shoe to drop so to speak If I could I would not be working for a living Absolutely be cashing in on all of it Unfortunately there is not It may sound trite to say it but we are living in uncertain times This may fall into the we don't know category too but I think of intelligence as mostly being things we never know happen What kind of counter cyber terrorism or cybersecurity intelligence is going on behind the scenes maybe that we aren't aware of Well I can tell you is that in general firms should be engaged in some basic protective techniques day in and day out And so are you hardening your networks Are you taking steps to ensure that user accounts on your networks are protected by using multi factor authentication are you monitoring traffic coming in and out of your network This is what I refer to as the blocking and tackling you know to use a football metaphor So that they can kind of raise the bar and make themselves a little less easy to attack We've talked about corporate responsibility and protocol but what if anything should consumers at the individual level be doing right now Understand that any data about them that resides with third parties whether it be their bank whether it be their mortgage company there is little to nothing that you can do to help keep that data safe That is the responsibility of the firms who you have entrusted with that data I highly doubt that most of us are going to be direct targets of the Russian government That being said there are some basics that you can implement One enabled multi factor authentication on every account the second thing is to utilize a password manager of some type because that will help you generate unique passwords for all of your accounts Doctor Andy green is an assistant Professor of information security and assurance at kennesaw state university Good advice Thank you for talking to us this afternoon We appreciate it You're welcome My pleasure And at.

"Many times a day would you say you correct my pronunciation 11 billion Okay All right So when I got to do a moment the insurance MSNBC Saturday night his producers in my ear could say Stephanie it's avan Either what I don't know what I'm saying I was nervous It was my first time He's very handsome and romantic and a fantastic journalist and I love his show Good morning amen Good morning good morning That was a super fun panel That was really great I really enjoyed it I think a lot of people enjoyed it as well It was the first time I think I've spoken to you on TV so you definitely brought a lot of fun Well let me just say I have been dying to talk to you about your podcast Actually for a while Travis can tell you before I went on your show I just said this because I'm sure you've all of these latest news bombshells as a journalist about January 6th I'm sure you're doing the same thing we are keeping up with all this this morning But I mean the foot soldiers that piece of it on January 6th and your personal connection to it I just think it's fascinating So we've all seen the even if you haven't heard the podcast if you've seen the ads on MSNBC Roseanne boylan hated politics she was shy she rarely left her home in Georgia but then her family got a shocking call Roseanne had died at the capitol on January 6th in the middle of the crowd trying to force their way past the police line from the depths of their grief the boyland's vowed to figure out what happened to Roseanne her brother in law Justin cabe reached out to an old high school friend He hoped could help MSNBC journalist David Mohan The quest for truth takes amen back to his hometown of kennesaw and my pronouncing that right Where he retraces the last 6 months of Roseanne's life and picks up a trail that leads to childhood haunts missing boyfriends down shadowy Internet rabbit holes American radical the 5 part series Amen so glad you're able to talk about this So you didn't know her but you knew Justin So tell us how beautiful Yeah so my parents moved from the Middle East to out of all places Kennesaw Georgia in the early 90s So that's where we settled when they immigrated to the U.S. And I went to high school at north cup high school And I knew Justin cave We played soccer together We were friends And you know this was pre Facebook Cree social media So after high school we kind of lost touch with each other and although every time I'd go back we would either hear about each other from other friends Justin and I did not speak and we're not in touch Until Facebook came along and reconnected us on the Internet On social media So we reconnected and over the years we would exchange a message here or two or just kind of follow each other's news But after January the 6th I got a message from him and I think on January 9th three days later saying his sister in law Roseanne was one of those who died in the attack on the capitol three days ago He made a statement and then he asked if I wanted to hear her story What really caught my attention though was that he used the word radicalization He said that the family believes that Roseanne was radicalized in under 6 months Wow And for me it was just such a jarring word to hear an old friend of mine in high school in kennesaw Georgia used the word radicalization Keep in mind I had spent like 15 years overseas in the Middle East I've covered extremism and radicalism I've covered ISIS Al-Qaeda terrorism Europe all that And I'm very familiar with the word but to hear it in the context of January 6th and a friend of mine in high school was quite eye opening And so I immediately replied to him and spoke to him and that's how the story began Well yeah and the way you put it here it examines the causes for Boland's transformation from politically disengaged to someone who died for Donald Trump Wow I mean how tragic is that And you talk about you just said it inside of 6 months They've done these studies aiming about you know social media How people can get radicalized so quickly I mean tell us a little bit it's interesting as a journalist you talk about Middle East I mean terrorism terrorism right And I think you talk in here about how well you talk about she had a hard life difficult life she was a victim of physical abuse She struggled financially She had some self esteem issues You said I think she was definitely in that category of destitute She's definitely a victim of disinformation and she contributed to it because she consumed a lot of dismissive information with her beliefs and conspiracy theories in QAnon And I think it pivoted when we saw the presence of Trump to include him as a demagogue He was the person who manipulated and exploited the vulnerabilities of people to try to promise them He could fix their societal ills and the way to do it was to follow him I mean and you bring up a really good point because when I started I was just quoting you But I mean it was really good that you focused on that because that is the central theme of I think how she was radicalized which is like this kind of triangle It's this nexus of disinformation destitution and demagoguery And when you look at the reason why people get radicalized it falls in that triangle This is a young woman who had struggled with personal substance abuse and drugs She had a physically abusive relationship She had a difficult time getting her life in order in being able to hold a job and take care of herself And then she was bombarded with this disinformation of here's what's wrong in society There's a conspiracy theory of Democrats and Hollywood elite trafficking children for part of this satanic worshiping cabal And so what happens is you are ripe for somebody who comes across as a demagogue to say follow me I will cure your ills I alone can fix it I can shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and nobody will care And you start believing the rhetoric of this man saying if you come with me to stop this deal I'll stay in power I will fight this cabal I will protect the children I will save the children And so you see how her transformation from being a person who is not socially she was very mindful of going into places with large crowds She hated going to Walmart How do you go from not wanting to go to a Walmart to suddenly being part of a rally of thousands of people going up and clashing with the police How do you go from somebody who's never voted in their life or being political to consuming news 24/7 being online for 1450 hours a day Disengaging from your family and totally going down this rabbit hole And I think it's the nexus of the three of them is what was so dangerous for the family And you were you know.

The mental health impacts of the pandemic one year later
"In September of last year, I spoke with a group of college journalists. For conversation about what? It was like reporting on the pandemic while they're in school, and I asked this question Let me ask you all this because not only as students, but as student journalists. Are there any story angles that perhaps we're missing right now, as relates to the college experience and what college students are dealing with. If so, tell me what it is. I feel like the mental aspect of things. This is such a new experience for everyone. Everything we're doing is the first time whether it's being full virtual. Hang on campus with certain restrictions. So I feel like, although we do talk about in like the mainstream media was going on our students going back on campus, I guess just like the process. Into school. I don't think the story of what the students are thinking or what happens when you get back on campus, or how's this virtual experience going on? I don't feel like that conversation's being had Enough about Okay. What do we think about this In terms of our mental space? I think one major thing that I've noticed is student mental health both on and off campus. You've got freshman on campus who are having a severely diminished experience. They're not getting to go to in person events. Things as simple is the dining hall or the gym are closed or have limited access. And so a lot of students are being very adversely impacted by Kevin 19 on a mental level because they feel isolated, or they're overwhelmed. In terms of having to deal with pandemic on top of normal school work, And then you've got universities all over the country, sort of acting like everything is normal. A lot of universities didn't adjust tuition. They didn't account for certain things such as, like students not being able to work jobs because they can't physically go into those spaces. And so I think students our overall lot more stressed than they would be. So I think that's definitely something that larger news media could be touching on is the adverse impacts on students mental health as a result of this virus. Well response to all this. Many colleges and institutions of higher learning are working to expand mental health resource is for students and joining me now to talk more about this is Teresa Johnston, She's assistant vice president for student affairs at Kennesaw State University. And she oversees a new initiative. Call Well being at K S U. Thank you so much, Miss Johnston for taking the time. I really appreciate it. You for having me I really appreciate the opportunity to be here. Your overall thoughts on what you just heard from those students, and that was just last September. No, My overall thoughts are there. The impact is staggering of covered 19 certainly on our population or student population and the challenge for students right to go having been in a physical environment than switching over a very rapidly right to a virtual Ethos. And so there has been some fall out for sure, To the extent that students had to adjust. Certainly to the technology alone, faculty and staff had to deal with technology of well as well. And then how do we connect students again in a virtual environment? Because much as we know that our student population are young adults, and even our younger generations are connected to technology. It's a very different experience to be in a box and Talk online versus being in the classroom with each other. So you know, we have seen. Excuse me. We have seen some increase in anxiety. I think the isolation is a big part of it. And helping students stay connected even in the virtual environment, leaving their video screens on right, leaving, leaving the video wander by just turning off it just listening, and hopefully there listening, so I do think that there is a very big impact. What were you all have been hearing at Kennesaw State in regards for students. Did you see an increase in students trying to seek additional resource is what has it been up to You all launching this new initiative? So for us, we have seen an increase in students participating online in workshops and group therapy, which has been interest and increase. Certainly in Tele mental health. We were Stepped right into the tele mental health field as we've had to expand those services for students and be available S O. The students found their way much of advertising and outreach to students. But they did find their way into the virtual environment for Tele mental health as well and the increase in the participation interestingly enough in group is greater than it had been prior. What do you think It's feel comfortable in the environment differently than potentially those of us who practice in the field? So very interesting.

Families of Negro Leaguers rejoice in MLB's decision to recognize league
"On wednesday. Mlb announced that it was quote unquote elevating negro leaguers. Two major league status within its official historical record which helps explain why google searches for the name. Josh gibson suddenly started spiking. Baseball says it's figuring out how to include negro leagues statistics into its canon of sacred numbers. And there is no resume quite as legendary or as mythical as that of the late josh gibson. The catcher that satchel page once unambiguously deemed the greatest hitter. Who ever lived. So i called up shawn gibson. Josh's great grandson and the executive director of the josh gibson foundation to understand what mlb's decision to elevate his great grandfather means to him. Well first of all. I don't like the word elevating. I think it should be more of a merger because niggly baseball player or major league players as well. So that's first and foremost this. And i want to bid tuesday night as josh gibson's greg grants and i woke up as josh jacobs. His grandson asher to cerebral calls questions about this happened. Literally when people say happen literally overnight it literally happened overnight and to wake up and see that in lobby made the announcement and josh gibson. Now what we consider not just one greatest league baseball players he. He'll be considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time and so for us in our family. It's a great honor. Ona understand josh. What you heard growing up from family from friends about how your great grandfather considered his own career compared to those who had the opportunity who were afforded that opportunity to play in the majors for jars. You know and the other great negro baseball players you know. They knew they were great players. They didn't even know by to tell him that it was just a decision At that time it was in that era. that kennesaw mountain land is denied the opportunity to play in the majors but did not stop him. They barnstorm against a lot of white baseball players. And you know as well as we know. I know is that a lotta times. They beat the white ball players in. So that's something right there. And so when i totally stories just in our family. There's we call josh gibson big josh. 'cause josh gibson junior of course is the sense that you can't say jockey get confused. I wanted to ask you about one of big joshes more famous nicknames. He was called very famously. The black babe. When you hear that sean about your great grandfather how does that make you feel you know. Let's say this bridge. Stevens bakers great grandson. He's one of my good friends. We go back and forth back and forth on this all the time. I didn't know that okay. Tell me about your relationship with him. And what you guys talk about on this regard. That's great so burn. Stevens is bait roof. Great grandson and so we always talked about. You know josh gibson's compared to my grandfather. And i'm like well that's what you but if you ask me about. Bay roof is a white josh gibson. So we go back and forth. Is we always say our people always say Yankee stadium was called the house. Ruth bill in ice t's brent are okay but who hit the furthest home running stadio i give them on that one. Well i mean. I want to even push that. Story further sean. Because i grew up going yankee stadium. He's the only human being to ever hit a fair ball out of the park out of the house. That babe ruth ledley built. I don't want to rub it in his face to. I don't go that far. I just say the furthest rebel. We all know he headed out. The ballpark. we know is over near babe. Ruth kane close no all seriously. I've heard several stories two different stories. I heard it. It's out of the ballpark. Been a heard from some players that hit like the top tier of moammar. So you wrote a piece of the undefeated in august about your grandfather's name being on the mvp trophy. And that may have been unthinkable at one point but now it does feel like there could be momentum towards that. Why is this important to you and your family. Then the peak kinda fell on our lap on. This happened to read an article about terry pendleton barry. Larkin and mike schmidt. Making a case to remove kennesaw Mountains landers name off the mvp award and it gets to okay. Well here at a names that they're considering replacing the name with in his frank robinson branch rickey and go shoot josh gifts literally again on the phone with my board directors. I said listen. We just found herself in a race. Let's see how we can win it so for us. I'm hoping that the vwa taking consideration of this and really think twice when they make a decision to rename this after josh gibson but this mvp war if this may not. The jaw is just about josh gibson. This will carry on the legacy of all the other great players as well. Who were denied the opportunity. So josh gibson is carrying several thousand players on his shoulders but his vp award the page. Family the buck leonard. Cool up a bail family. Turkey stars fan oscar charleston. Family all great players will all celebrate. It'll be named after josh. But every time i speak about this i'll make sure represent all the family members who were denied the opportunity
