"In the home of the freemen land of the brave with all the material possessions that money could ever buy too, many kids are lost in the world of social media about standing about Facebook, and Twitter and all kinds of other social media accounts. Howard, look how it tastes what? And you don't measure up don't measure up to what you see in social media, which is fantasy land and therefore the students want to identify being somebody important and the best way for a few fleeting seconds or moments of being important as the do something, which everyone looks a user as powerful individual such as when you use a gun. So these two murderers. At stems school at the highlands ranch. The stem school and in Colorado wanted to act out because whatever mental health issues, they were dealing with suicides number one caused the death of teenage boys. Boys have more these issues than girls, and it's And it's not the proliferation of guns is the proliferation of mental illness of sickness. We have about sixty five million kids are in school every year. There might be tattered twenty serious shootings in school and my talking about a robbery on school grounds or a shot fired a block away that is classified as a school shooting. What we have about ten to fifteen per year of serious in school shootings. Would someone's injured? It's terrible. It's awful, and it's likely to proliferate, but understand there's sixty five million schoolchildren and this happens ten or fifteen or twenty times a year and each wants a tragedy. One is awful, but everyone everyone has caused. My mental illness. None are caused by the second amendment rights that you and I enjoy and protect none of them. But when the media, and the Democrats can take a terrible event and transfix it onto me in you and blame us for that. It's an amazing thing to watch get rid of legal guns, only, the criminals will have guns and the first thing that happens in an armed robbery and a Bank in a store. First thing that happens in a shooting in a church or a mosque synagogue is somebody Dow's nine one one and says somebody come here with a gun immediately get here quickly. What if somebody was there already with a gun when that be somewhat helpful? I would think so but for the courage of Kendrick has steel eighteen year old boy who charged these two murderers, many others likely would have been shot and killed total of nine were shot. One dead. And I said, you know, what I don't think it's going to be a good fit for us and stuff, but it was amazing because she didn't lead with that. I had to dig while we're on the phone found her profile, and here, she is is an attorney for the Brady campaign kept saying, oh, my client this, and my client that and certainly something that, you know. Did you know that story? That's that's start humming. The Brady bunch song. It is a bunch of. Yeah. Uneducated. Folks over if I said last thing to and we haven't played this for a couple of weeks every Thursday morning. We have a group of ladies that come on here right here on the same set. It goes live on our Facebook page called a blue line roll, call they're all wives of current law enforcement officers, and they talk about many of the things that law enforcement officers go through with the families go through. It's an interesting. It's an interesting perspective of what it's like to be law enforcement these days, which believe me is completely different than law enforcement twenty years ago. And. Oh, yes along so JC. We have a few minutes before the first break here. Tell us some of the news or if you want to get into the Colorado. The almost a three part story on the Colorado state, but we can start. Talking about this because they had kind of the same story. But okay in case, you haven't heard this. And then certainly you probably have people watch the news. There was a Colorado school shooting of this week. And there was a stem school stem that happens to stand for science, technology, engineering and math. So it was one upper level kind of high school three days before they graduated to miscreants that were students there one was eighteen years old. The other one is an his name was a Devon Ericson. And the other one is a juvenile named. Alec McKinney who identified the police identified him as a girl, but they prefer to be a boy in in that one they decided to come in and shoot people in the class right before graduation, and they did come in. They pried open the one smash and one report one said pride open a locked gun cabinet to get access to their parents one of the parents guns. They took a couple of rifle they only use. The handguns, and they went in to the school regular students and went separate ways into the classes in open fire in the amazing thing. And I think that this is what we find an eighteen year old kid, if you see his picture, you think this would be the last kind of it looks like it'd be playing to but in a band, but he jumped up immediately in attacked the person with using his weight pushed him against the wall. Unfortunately, the the the person fired into him and the brave kid Kendrick Castillo eighteen years old three days from graduation was killed while while holding the swim immediately to other students came up the gunman fired twice hit one of the students in the leg. Two times of the other student who had already enrolled in the Marine Corps advanced enrollment program of these guys subdued subdued him. And unfortunately, the only one killed him. This was this just brave Kendrick Castillo eighteen years old who prevented the other folks from from from happening. But that's what Ron. And I were talking about here. They had been warned this school. Yeah. You know, what this part of it? That's right. We come back from the break. We'll get to more of the Colorado shooting and at the bottom of the hour. "Is often not as the district. We can't be used for reason for gun control are people not a statement. Their classmate Kendrick Castillo was shot and killed when he tackled one of the shooter's giving others a chance to fleet and last week a twenty one year old university of North Carolina, Charlotte student Riley will met the same fate when he knocked a campus shooter off his feet. Both cases are now raising questions about what students young people are taught to do when someone opens fire inside their schools. Joining me now is Frank Zimring. He's a professor of law and criminal Justice. Studies at the university of California Berkeley for thanks for joining us. My pleasure as someone who studies gun violence and mass shootings. What do you make of these two stories of two young men who died attacking school shooter? Well. In the first instance, it provokes extremely mixed feelings and to those of us who are old enough to have children of our own. It also raises the issue of what would I want my kids to do in that situation? And here is the problem with that when we're talking about school shooters almost always if anybody's going to get shot, it's the intervene her. That's why we put police officers in kevlar vest. Now comes the interesting question if it elevates the inner Venus risk does the total death rate. Go up in the two cases that we're looking at the answer to that is probably not it sounds to me like you're saying that as a parent. You wouldn't want your child to intervene in this way? But you're also making the point. And there is an argument to be made that more people would have died if they had not done, so possibly if the gunman has already started shooting, the total risk of death is already extremely high. But if the gunman hasn't started shooting, then an intervention may in fact, provoke what was the threat and make it actually I want to play some tape from one of the students named Brendan by Lee who charged the shooter at the Highland ranch school in Colorado. He charged the shooter alongside Kendrick STO, but he survived. Here's what he told reporters. It was immediate non hesitation immediate jumping action. There was no questioning there was no hesitation. There was no looking around it was threat noticed action times. So he. He says he wasn't even thinking, do you believe we've gotten to this point where we've seen so many of these shootings in American schools now the just sort of by default you spring into action yet. Well, not quite for one thing. What you're talking about is late adolescent male. And so there is a great deal of much cheese MO or heroin Cam Bishen that interacts with the situation of risk. And that's wonderful. Whenever we're fighting active wars, we always draft those folks, but again from an thirty or risk management standpoint. It is only when contacts with the thority who are armed and trained or escape or hiding is not possible when it really becomes a situation. Where intervention might be necessary. Here's one more piece of tape from Kendrick's father, John Custodio, speaking with CNN because of what he did others live and thank God for that. I love him. And he's a hero. He always will be. But. There's another part of you that we should just turned and ram retreated hid, you know, did something to put himself out of harm's way. If that was possible that is heartbreaking situation to be in as a parent. I think it gets to some of what you're saying here. How should we be talking about these people who were so young and who sacrificed themselves? How should we be talking about them out of the fact well after the fact of that kind of sacrifice I think what his father said I has got to be the only comfort that can be taken from the standpoint of planning policy. I think it is much better to de emphasize the possibilities of Harare ick intervention because there are often times when Innoventions can provoke terrible risks to the people who try and undertake it. Otherwise, we're going to have to dress all our kids and kevlar vests, and that's the country that none of us went to live in. That's Frank Zimring, professor of law and criminal.

"Colorado. Hi, everybody, Kate Delaney. There's been a shooting in Littleton Colorado out of school. And this was a k through twelve school stem school, and you have seen maybe some of the video of kids lined up outside of the school to people have been arrested in connection with the shooting. The details are kind of sports and coming out, slowly, but two suspects are in custody. The governor says he's monitoring the shooting happened late in the afternoon on what would have been rainy kind of school day for those kids who were there in in Littleton. And we see the images again of kids lineup out of school putting their hands up and the good news is immediately. The Douglas county sheriff's department responded and bam got them into custody suspects. And and of course, unfortunately, there eight victims that were injured seven to eight they're saying. But nobody killed in. This is in Littleton. So a suburb of Denver, and they were on the scene the police and the sheriff's deputies almost right away, and they try to suss things out yet kids on the ground. I mean, what an awful thing they said they were initially looking for third suspect. But then they ruled that out one victim is in good condition that children's hospital and Colorado south campus in highlands ranch. So that's a good thing. And immediately the sheriff's department tweeted something out that the school is locked down and all other Highland ranch. Schools were on lockdown so kudos to them. They handled the situation correctly Sem school was placed on lock down, of course, after the shooting up, and and it's been lifted it was a couple hours later lifted, but you know, about eighteen hundred students there and it's in Littleton, Colorado. And you think back to Columbine high school back in ninety nine two students killed. You know, twelve of their classmates and how awful that was and it brings back those memories. And of course, parkland last year and Florida disa- sad state of affairs, and we've had people on to talk about it. We've had our favorites. Qala Jon Huber to come on and talk about it. And what do we do about this epidemic? And and then what you see afterwards, and what are the motives than will possibly make them want to do that. And to fellow classmates to come back to school where they were. But some of those details are are just starting to happen. And of course, anything we know will we will pass on to you. But the good news is as of now, nobody was reported dead shot to death in that incident. Thank goodness. And they immediately responded to what was happening there. Speaking of responding, and I said this in the first hour, but if you didn't catch it, they're still back and forth over the tax records of the president's and will release his his. Tax records, and the Democrats are screaming for the MoMA hill and the White House administration the people around the president or not releasing the tack wreck tax records, so that's one of contextual contention. Then of course, the attorney general and sussing out. The Muller report is the other bone of contention between the White House and the hill. There's always something. Right. And I talked about this show is being what's what do you need to know that affects your life? In other words, what's happening in your backyard in my backyard? You know, what happens in Washington affects the Muller report caused millions of dollars if access the outcome, and whether they have come with crack, or what does it mean for the future all that you take into account, but even from just a financial point of view? It's it is part of what you pay for that's part of the whole. If you want to think about it that way in a sort of a long game sense, that's part of it. And of course, mentioning. A school shooting right at the top. Here. I am in Denver just spent a day in a night in Littleton beautiful little area where you look out, and you can see incredible views of all kinds of different mountains from different perspectives. And it's just terribly terribly sad that students live and deal with this. And no, this is a possibility and one way that's the good thing because they can't school districts can't be ignorant to the fact that happening, and they have the Tyrrell's and how to get out of the school and what to do and what to do in classrooms. But it's always shocking. I just think when I was a kid never thought in my head. You just wanted to fit in you wanted to survive or thrive or whatever think back to your own days in school. But one thing I was never worried about was bullets bouncing off of deaths or hallways or running to get out of a building to to run from people that were trying to shoot me for no reason whatsoever. And. And then family members worried never even thought in her head. In fact, we had fired drills and the one thing we did have. I went to a very big high school in cherry hill, New Jersey, we had bomb evacuation drills and that happened once in a while. And every once in a while we would get a bomb scare, but it's still was so so very very rare that that happened. It wasn't very often that that happened. He coming up at the tail end of the hour. Great information, anybody dealing with potentially diabetes. Hypertension wide you need to get that checked. Why do you have to be diligent and pay attention to to what you're eating and what the effects can be of that? We've got a great nurse coming on at the that the end of the show, and this is nurses week. And I think of I think of nurses, and I have a cousin Jen DeMarco who's a nursing at children's hospital in Philadelphia, and she's in Neo Natal unit. Which of course, we're some sad store. Oris with babies, but I think of her job and the other nurses on that floor, and then dealing with nurses, when I've been visited people in hospitals or dealt with that and what an important role they play. I do we always have days and weeks to honor things and some of them are seem so trumped up, but or invented anyway and nurses week. I think is really really good thing to give back to sometimes the men and women who serve in that capacity that don't always get recognized. So you'll enjoy that conversation. And plus we have another doctor. That's gonna join us to talk about a subject where women feel like they're crazy their husbands or partners feel like they're not. And all it is is getting that middle age is not all there is but. Arriving at the doorstep of middle age. And what does that mean? When you go through a change of change that people don't wanna talk about which by the way, men, also go through change. And.
