"But i mean this is like like c. Which it's like. You're reading this book and it's like you feel the salt spray you ride on your lips. It is so like you just feel like you're there and i went hundred percent agree scott. I am obsessed with their gods. I'm obsessed obsessed with their. Gosh i love how it starts out with her sister. You lays burial. And they're in like their family crypt and it's like they shove you into the ocean in your coffin and it's like it's not like anything i've ever read. I like the idea of having a crypt. That really is a tide pool. Yes that's what it is until the tide comes in carries you off and pontus is the god that they worship there in this pantheon his god. And it's like yeah. It's like we're from the salt. Where of the salt returned to the salt. And is something really cool about it. On this kind of gave me some kendra blake vibes a little bit too. Because it's kind of like it's hard to pin down a time period. That's completely like something in our history. You what i mean like. They use carriages but at the same time there. There's some stuff that feels turn of the twentieth century and their stuff that feels like really ancient to So i liked that. I had like a lot of different and the cuts of their dresses and everything. I had a lot of different time periods can going on in my mind. It hasn't including victorian feel. Yeah yeah i would say. It's kind of rooted in nat like stylistically as far as if you can envision the actual stuff that's there but then she kinda goes her own direction with it. You know it's not all about the crinoline sent will of course it's like it's just turns out like that's you know it's it's just kind of a yes just Stylistic place to start. I think i would actually say a lot of this is about a crinolines and corsets. There's a lot of costuming in this book that closed the costume plays an important role. Sure i just met. She didn't necessarily go into the structure of garment. Yes i i know i. It's a it's called segue. Can you explain that to me. In a way. I would appreciate a lot of the description in this book. That that i knew would be right up sandra's alley and probably right up yours as well. This is one of the things. Where a man. I actually do differ in our in the things that we like is. I don't need to know what all of the dresses look like. That's a problem. I but the way that she describes it paints a very vivid picture Amanda and i are more of the school of. I need to be able to feel the wallpaper. I need to know what that feels like. I g to know what this dress is exactly like. I mean. I can't jump off with with little detail. But my druthers particularly story that is basically about princesses i know exactly what color exactly why tut precisely with the sheen of the shoe is. I wanna know all of it. I so appreciate that kind of on that note to. Because i don't want to give too much away but this is a fun story where you know you have a huge cast specifically made up of these sisters and we don't get to know all of them in great detail but i did feel. I didn't feel it was fun to get a glimpse at some of these. Some of them just like they're not so much. The focus can meals a big focus. Analyze big focus verities a big focus and i liked. I liked that they were all pretty different girls to yeah i like that. She did a good job of differentiating with You know kind of a cast of thousands. And you're right. We didn't necessarily know everybody individually very well..

"Weirdo book worms. We want to share our love of genre fiction with you. Some readers out there may look down on you for your love of horror sci fi and fantasy but not us so stop by discuss what we've been reading. I John John. Keys it Sandra Scott. Well sell in case you've been living under a rock much case good for you. That's probably what you should be doing. Maybe like a moon rock lake on another planet. We're having a pandemic situation here on earth and It's the whole thing and it's upsetting and it's nerve wracking and God one more. Can you say about it? That we all haven't been saying haven't been feeling but we decided that the show must go on so we're going to do something a little bit fun. This week we have a couple of books. You know we have a couple books lined up. We got a couple of books in the pipe. Our view. Yeah a special again but this week we wanted to have a little bit of fun with some with a with a with a group of books that were both bringing to the table. Yes specifically characters characters so before we get into that. Let's just have a moment of around Hiba discussion? So I mean of course none of this is that all to make light of the current pandemic situation and there are people that are suffering in there people that are dying and it's horrifying in the most true sense of the word but we're all in this together and Scott my especially me we get through things a lot with humor and with turning to our media are Chandra loves Books especially movies. Tv Video Games. And I think that's a lot of people are getting through it so I can save for myself. I have watched almost. WanNa finish the last episode after we record of season. Three of channels. Zero Butcher's block holy smokes. What insane intense season really happy to be taken that end reading books? Of course which we're GONNA talk about later in future episodes Still doing the court shows still during Spooky Slumber Party cell still staying busy and then also Scott my watched the hunt. That was really fun. That was so much fun. That was It was great it was just. I don't know it was just everything to be in. It was gory and it was profane was brutal and insightful. I Yeah I had a great time watching that movie. I have to say she could seen in theaters. Yeah me too. I have to say this This whole situation has put me in a head space where I haven't really been interested in watching particularly very tense horror movies or TV shows or or things in general which is we could say made things a little bit tense in his household right. Because that's what gives me comfort but The hunt is just a lot of fun. Nathan is very good satire. Both sides come out looking not so great. It's very funny. It's very fun. It's very well directed. I think it's definitely worth checking out. One other thing we should plug a little bit is we did a special episode over at the Spooky Somber Party about the lodge which is a recent film. Release Horror Film. I'm on it does. Scott is on it sill over it spooky summer party had seen it so we really really wanted to talk about it. 'cause movies just huge. It's everything and we're like people need to stop sleeping on it. Oh my God. It's so good and Scott. Loved it too so he just jumped in on this bonus episode. See you gotTA check that out. That's Buki party the lodge upset. It's riddled with spoilers. So hopefully you've seen it but I had so much fun. Being able to hop in on that one it was it was a delight. Yeah because you don't get to discuss film a whole lot not I do really never. Yeah talk about isolation movies too damn so for tonight's episode. We decided we would play a little game. Play game went to play game with billy where we would pick a hand full of characters from books that we would be. Maybe okay being isolated with stuck in. What are you? Call this again. Social isolation social isolation quarantine with another person character. And you know maybe kind of what what mischief we would get into with this other individual angle. Be a lot of fun. I'm excited I have. I have a pretty fun list. I think my list I mean I feel very heartfelt about my list. There was so many I could pick in so many different scenarios. I'm GonNa tell you not a lot of horror though because there's not a lot of work and scenarios I'd WanNa be stuck in. I gotTa say do you want to go? I do you know I I want to go ahead and go first so I had stitches is going to help you out over there so. I'm going go with the person that I wanted to be. I WANNA be isolated with WHO? I think I would have the most fun with the most isolated if you're here if you here so In in this case I don't I I don't care if I'm isolated here or am is located with this character preferably here. This would be lowest cleary from sour dough by Robin Sloan. Oh that's not surprising. A lot of people are discovering the joy of baking during these times. And I have to say I was here. I licked it. It's mine but seriously I've been taking very good care of my sour dough starter. I think she and I could swap some tips as far as baking. I'd love to get a sample of of her magical starter and the book is really appropriate for this because the book is all is all about social isolation although in the book it's not about it's not forced but it's about finding community and finding a way to connect to people and you know she just really needs a friend and I can be that friend and we can big sourdot together and we'll have a lot of fun and you know what to wherever you guys are as long as you have her oven. Yes that's really the crux there. I do want her oven. I have to say that book has inspired me to go down a little bit of a rabbit hole on if I could build an oven into in our backyard. Sandra didn't know about that one until now but yeah I I would love to bake sour dough at Lois and have a great isolation time doing that. We so much so so many carbs. I want to take advantage of the spicy soup and Spicy Sandwich. Yes I want those recipe. Yes so I'm I'm for this. I'm for this my first one probably also not really much of a shock. I'm going to choose to socially isolate over with the poisoners from Kendra Blake's three DART crowds prising no-one series. Yes so all be there at their Their compounds and I will learn all of their ways at to be a poison. Our and going to wear really fabulous close. We're going to have our Bachan Aliyah party the the Grove Noir and really just speak fabulous and I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to study this craft and learn what these fine fine individuals that saw. Plus you know. They have all of the food. They're going to need to get them through this. Oh Yeah Oh totally stocked. We've got everything and we could probably forage for some poisonous mushrooms and stuff to eat. And all that yeah I'm not born with the poisoners gift that I know love but I'd like to think that I am but given this time of isolation I will learn it. I think you will learn it. I think I think one of us is going to poison the other by the time this is over. Well come out on top go ahead you go next all right so the second one is going to be at her office and it is Kansas Chen from severance by Ling. Mma a little on the nose a few of these are going to be a little on the nose and this is not the one that is the most on the nose but I have to say candace and I have a bit of a kindred spirit thing going on right. Now we're we're in the middle of a pandemic Things are not Going normally the world is not normal and yet both of us are just doing our jobs as if everything is the same as if nothing has changed and nothing will ever change. And we're just GONNA get through this by just doing the same thing every day. I think the two of US would actually give a lot of grounding to each other just being able to talk just being able to talk about our jobs and able to talk about how crazy things are not. We're just going to reduce going to keep on keeping on like we always have been. I love that answer and I would love to hang out with her too. And maybe that book is a little. Oh something a little triggering for people right now but man. If you haven't read severance cod that's such a good buddy such an ETA. Sti MILLENNIAL DYSTOPIA and post apocalyptic. Read it. Just it's hits so close to home if you're a millennial I feel the same way as you in Kansas. I'm with you on that. But you know you in. Kansas also both photographers yes. So you could like maybe encourage each other to get out there a little get out distance ourselves from everybody else but maybe take some nice pictures along the way. Yeah I love that answer so my second pick is claire from the good demon by dear friend. Jimmy Cudgel is our good friend who loves madly Levy so much altered. Minor prophets authored. The good team and you know I love Jimmy. So Claire is bad ass chick. She's smart she's funny. She's interesting we would read and discuss a cultism and literature and philosophy and just really like enjoy each other's company of Guinea into all that stuff arcane magics and where cool weird drifted close and Yeah I taught her all about having a demon and her and what the heck that was like and I think it would just openness up to go down this crazy rabbit hole of a cultism now is this. Is this possessed Claire? Or is this looking for her demon clear? Impose Post Demon. Claire Host Demon clear. Which is how she is for most of that book because otherwise you'd be getting two for the price of one which is true and I'm not necessarily opposed to that but you know I'm a. I'm a supportive Claire. And I'm like you don't you don't need that. Demon Clara Lake. You've just how you are all right so my next character that I would spend isolation with by Lake Liberate worked under the Semi House. Oh Yeah I forgot to say that. She lives in some weird lake place with weird parents. And I'm an old partisan. We're going to have to do this here. Come on over here hang out on the good sorry so so my next character. I would be hanging out with her and it would be immigrant Chen From War Cross. That is a great isolation place. I thought about that but it's not super me IT SUPER. It is super me. The you know being stuck in the house is hard but being able to put on a visor and go into a whole new world is really just I want it now and on top of that she and I could play war cross together. It'd be like playing video games all day while also being able to hang out in in you know inventive new world. Leaving the house will never having to. We would hack things I well. She would teach me how to hack We would have so much fun and nerd out and play games. It would be at play. Warcraft and play war cross exactly so much work absolutely after look at what all the players roles are again because there was one of them there was like super me was like like in Harry Potter. Totally a seeker. Yeah you know in Quidditch so there was some role that I'm like. Oh that's me..

"Weirdo bookworm unite. We want to share our love of genre fiction with you. Some readers leaders out there may look down on you for your love of horror sci fi and fantasy but not us so stop by as we discuss what we've been reading. I johnny junkies. This is sandra scott l. Welcome to another installment of john junkies tonight. We are discussing singing a highly highly anticipated fantasy conclusion. Call it call seller tori episode. Call it a week. We don't be don't be sad that it's over be happy that it happened. Yeah okay. I'm going to be very soon. I'm going to be very sad for a long time. <hes> <hes> of course we're talking about five dark fates can dara blake's conclusion to a series that you and i and amanda have have loved so much three dark crowns saga and it's coming to a close. The sun is setting on this story. These characters is our queens and their friends and foes horrible. It really is difficult. I this is going to be a little bit live a different episode because a lot of you have experienced the series with us and some of you have not fight. We're going to talk about the story thus far get you prepared to say goodbye to our favourite. Queens defend burn <hes>. I'm just going to go ahead and say right now. <hes> our scores are up in the air. You all know how much we love the series but i'm gonna say this book was a struggle for me. So ah now this is not at all. Oh yeah in a good way i plowed through this book for a good portion of it and then about two thirds of the way through a closed the book and i just i couldn't bring myself to finish i think in the spoiler sections we will address what that part was. Yes mangy meiji stop but even even without the events of the book itself. I was not prepared for this series to end. I love it so much. It's means so much to me and i just i knew when i picked up the book again after that point. I knew that would be probably the last time i knew that that would be see the point where i would finish it and it would be over and it would be done and it was really hard for me i can't i think the last time that i had this experience experience with a book was the final book of harry potter just i i wasn't ready for it to be over a relate very strongly to that <hes>. I absolutely loved this series. I adored the series. It means a lot to me as well. It just fits in so much of my. I idea of you know kind of like a fantasy world. How i kind of sort of wish things were like if i had to pick a fantasy world to live in there is like i can see myself into a lot of facets of fen burn now. Obviously we're not gonna spoiled this book until the spoiler section which warn you about but i mean at this point like hello like you have to read the other books in the series to even be interested so i guess light spoilers for the the rest of the books you know this is a story of a matriarchial on a goddess worshipping island called fen burn. There are three major factions sion's on this island. There is the elemental which control the elements and that's where queen mirabella comes from there is the naturalists which work with the natural world and plants and animals particularly they have their animal's familiar along with them and then there is also the poisoners which are right people which are the healers but also the killers and they have an affinity for working with potions and poisons uh-huh and concoctions and they're a little wicked just a little little wicked dork yeah there little dark and <hes> kind of lake lake buji and ornate and okay final. Stop talking about the poisoners where the best people now. There's a couple of other types one can be and we've learned about it thus far in the book but those are the three like big ones you can also be war gifted which is obviously you have an affinity for fighting and telling helsinki yeah strength and then you can also be an oracle which there's like four oracle's left. There's not many sierra because because they are typically around at birth because they are thought to have this horrible gift which is actually curse sell at this point in the book we we have our group of gals. They have not done what they're supposed to do. Which is fight to the last girl. They're all three still ooh but you know we got my poor katharina i can. I just call her cat because that is hard for me to say that. I can say to my head but i can't. I can't say it out loud. I don't i don't know if i can if i say cattering in my head either but yeah cats find selley have cat who is just full of ghostly queens. I've gone on record as saying she's a clown car. Full of ghosts just packed packed to the broncos and they call her the queen but people don't even know the half of it. There's very few people that know that she's full of these queens. That were the ones that died at the hands of their sisters sisters. Yeah the whole. The whole hook of the series is that there are three triplets that are born every generation of the queen and a and each one has a different gift and they are destined to fight each other to the death till there is one queen who will rule and give birth to the next set of triplets so at this point in the book we got the dead queens over here that we got some other dead queens that are going on to their kind of in the midst and then there's queen ilian who likes to make appearances in arsonist dreams and shows arsenault like things from the past to kind of help them with the future and then there is another queen on top of that which is of course jewels who is a naturalist who we've had since the beginning. That's arsenals like little protector her b._f._f. Off her and her cougar camden <hes> but now jewels was born legion cursed where she has multiple gifts and in this case she's a naturalist and war gifted and she's kinda really supposed to be the queen yeah. There's there's been there's been a prophecy that the that a legion jin cursed queen will either be the the the salvation offend burn or the destruction of burn right so that's kind of a problem with oracle with oracle. Kohl gift is that you don't necessarily know which direction that's going to go and we've lost some friends along the way when we come into this book. We're in a very dire position to so already sort of launching into this book. It's like we have so much to wrap up and let me just start by saying gene may think she tied up. Everything very nicely in this book are blake did she did this. Is this is one of those series where where you'll never be happy the way that it ends but you'll always be satisfied. The way that ends she does a really good job of of taking you to. It's inevitable conclusion asian and it is it is satisfying and idea. I i totally agree with that so good word for it. It's satisfying and it's hard because we all love these characters actors in the story so much were super invested in it so yeah and it's like you know that it's not all going to work out so perfectly and neatly because that's just not her writing style. That's not the character she makes. She makes very realistic. Characters who are going through very very hard things things and there's something happening on this island where the goddess is really like. I need to change things and there's going to be an upheaval of this world so already going into it. You're like while anything could really happen. There's like this crazy. Divine intervention going on. 'cause you know something is wrong. This is this is a land and where the goddess absolutely exists the magic absolutely exists both because of the gifts and because that's the only way that the queen always gives birth to three triplets triplets but somewhere along the way things have gotten perverted yeah diluted exactly you have these different factions who are controlling the queen's means and and making up their own rules and and turning it into legend. Oh this is known this is this is ancient laws and it's not there making it up as they go along and it's yeah it's kinda like how a lot of organized religions liked to change the narrative to suit political machinations sion's machinations. I can't say that word but it's very much the same thing and if you love books where political maneuverings what's going on then you must have been super happy with the series. That's one of my favorite parts of it is all of the shifting moving parts too big cast of characters as there's all these shady alliances being formed behind the scenes. What i love about this series is the character work. She does with her character's every single book. I feel like i've had different favorite character and those characters have existed since the very beginning everyone has such strong growth rose while also maintaining being themselves throughout the series the the <hes> the arsenault from book one is the same arsenault from book four but she has taken a journey that has turned her into a different person and made her experiences different. Every character has how's the strong growth they don't end the same but they're consistent right and i really appreciate how much growth goes on realistically when and you look at this. This series has taken place over like a year. I mean besides the the flashback books the novellas that kind of fill in some back story and stuff but it's not been like a long time. It's been a lot going on absolute. Chaos in these characters lives but it's been pretty quick. I believe it's been two maybe three years since the beginning of the book or you sure saw because because the initial quickening and and that whole event that is a year long okay that's true so let's say two years yeah i think i think it's about two years because we could be wrong. Somebody screaming at us right now in their car as an listening linked to this. I'm trying to do the time on my head because there is a reference in a way to how long it's been yeah and without going back i wanna say it's three three years almost to the day from the beginning. I'm going more like two years okay so anyway. It's not been a lifetime's worth of stuff in this series but it's been a lot crammed into because it's so important and everything that's going on is such an upheaval and and so so incredibly monumental these characters lives so i guess we kind of gave an experience or you said struggle though this is a little bit different than unusual for me. It was an absolute obsession absolute obsession. Yeah absolutely yeah yeah. There is no point when i struggled through this book even some hard hard stuff that happens. I could not stop not only turning the pages but devouring and hanging on every word and there's not on a lot of series that i love like this. There's not a lot of authors of that. I think her slow amazingly this and in case you couldn't tell from clicking into this episode we have another interview with the author the woman herself the queen of queens kendra blake and we are so incredibly humbled and thankful to have her sit down with us via skype again and let us into her world and her thought process us and allow us to you know kind of laud her with praise because we love her books as we said at the last time she's kind of r. J. k. rowling of this decade kate kind of is for these two jonah junkies anyway alright so i guess s. without much further ado cisco right and with the right into the interview and when we come back we're gonna talk. Spoilers for the end is nigh. Five dr traits <music>.

"kendra blake" Discussed on What Book Hooked You?

"This is what book cook, do you? I'm Brock Shelley. And thanks for listening on this episode. I talked to Victoria, Scott whose latest book we told six lies his out now from entail team, Victoria, talks with me about how she decided to kind of dedicate her life to writing and influences she's had along the way. So listen. So Victoria, what book hooked you? So one of my favorite books on is. This is not a test by Courtney summers. It's one of my favorite reads of all time, and she's just kind of a superstar. Yeah. Everything she writes is golden what about this book in particular, really kind of stands out for you. I'll just start with zombies. So it's it's Dombi book. But I always tell people I do all these school visits and stuff and everybody, you know, inevitably asked me, what's my favorite book of and I always come up with this one. And they wanna know, of course, when it's about saying, you know, zombies, but hear me out 'cause you know, his ambi- isn't for everyone. I loved I loved her writing. And I loved that. She took something that could be on gloriously cheesy like zombies ad made it so tense end. So believable end it's one of the most tense books. I've ever read outside of bird vox by Josh Mallarme in which of course, everybody is now watching on the books if you love bird bucks, you have to go read this is not a test Bicorni summers. She also did really well, she takes all these characters. They're like they're like teenage characters. And of course, a lot of them not knowing what to do after. Parents like eating they basically run to local high school, and they locked themselves in there, and it almost becomes less about the zombies outside, which really, you know, they never really say zombie. It's just people that have like had this disease like attacking each other zombies, and it becomes more about the dynamic of bees. I think it's probably like seventeen agers inside the school gymnasium, and they start you know, like having fights and they start having sex. They start having just all of these crazy like in a relationship dynamics Sturt happening in you are obsessed with it's almost has like this Lord of the flies feel to it inside the school gymnasium in. I don't know. I was obsessed. It's it's also the writing style I could go on and on about this book. She writes these short punchy powerful sentences and after I got done reading. That book I feel my entire manuscript. By the way, I was writing even my sentence structure change to like I had all these like lo long fluey lyrical sentences with tons of commas to lake every single sentence was like fortify like shop. You words of in period. Five words period by period. Like because that's like how she writes in. It's it's phenomenal. And so is that kind of. A good example of the type of books that you really sort of gravitate to whether it's Jonah or just kind of style. Yeah. Yeah. I I really love like thrillers, psychological thrillers. Of course, we told six size the book that I have coming is a psychological thriller end. It's it's really my I it's really my first fall noise. It's my second. Because by the grenade was a psychological thriller. But I think that's why I was reading a of like fantasy wrote some paranormal romance. I wrote some kind of lake thriller slash fantasy. It was just kind of playing around a lot. But everything a lot of the stuff. I love to read is like gone girl in that kind of John Russo. It is it is it's very much in line with what I liked to read. But I loved that. It was kind of like a thriller with almost with not almost. But with a her normal twist on it. Yeah. It's definitely what I like to read. I like to read all over the place. But that's that's generally what I come back to love like a fast paced reads. I just I want to be entertained. I want that feeling of not being able to put the book down, you know, and she nails that. Kind of going back for a bit. What type of reader were you like growing up? Gosh, I was such a dark Flutie reader. I feel like it was a really outgoing with like friends in at school and stuff. But when I read books, it was definitely like late at night with an oral Stein Christopher pike, which is leg. You know? Today's trying to think kind of like today is Kendra Blake of that world just really dark teenagers like turning into monsters eating other teenagers type stuff. So really I have like a really lick light. And airy Seoul, no just kidding, do not, and what kind of gut you in the mindset of wanting to be come a writer. So I was working at an advertising agency. And during what I guess now stork lays called the great recession of myself, my boss, my boss's boss, and like probably fifteen to twenty percent of our entire we worked in radio advertising. Thing we all got laid off. And but they gave us like this crazy severance package, which you're unfamiliar with that just means they keep paying you even though you don't work there anymore, which is amazing. So my husband we were sitting down eating like cheese enchiladas, and he's like all right? So you're going to get paid for sitting around from nine months, unless you go work for a competitor. And if I went to go work for competitor than I stopped getting severance was this weird place where it's like, do you wanna go work again to make the same amount of money or wanna like do something else for nine months, then you can go back to your field. So I ended up I was eating cheese allies in he was like, what would you wanna do if you can do anything that's not advertising? And I was like, I don't know. I honestly I just wanna sit around and read all day for a while. I just want for one week to just sit and read was like that's been my longest love. I can't think of anything else that I loved as long as dearly as just reading books, and there would be times when you're a college. It's really tough to reuse reading so much like, you know. Learning material and stuff, but I I would always come back to it. And I think that's that's really where it started is. I
