"And welcome back into this segment and part two of ken. Griffey juniors playing career important moments just who he was as a player kinda thing. So what can back to part two of that in this segment of the gmc podcast baseball. Podcast i'm your host. Patrick kenny soap. Starting off where we left out. Are we starting off where we left off. We're in two thousand and five. So that is a little bit after he has. He's about halfway through his tenure now in cincinnati and starting on may first two thousand five. We saw the resurgence of healthy. Ken griffey junior. He hit thirty. Five home runs that year. His highest since his first year with the reds and griffey slowly moved up the career home. Run list he ended the season tied with mickey mantle. After having passed jamie jamie foxx ted williams willie mccovey ernie banks eddie. Mad us mel. An eddie murray early september. He strained his tendon in aleppo in his left foot and unrelated injury to his past hamstring and calf problems and was listed as day-to-day for several weeks on september. Twenty second with the reds out of playoff contention. The team decided to bench him for the rest of the season so that he could immediately have arthur arthur skopje surgery on his left knee in a separate in a separate operation to repair scars from two thousand and four hamstring operation. Still after his two on one hundred twenty eight games in two thousand and five were the most he'd played since two thousand griffey's resurgence was recognized where he was named the national league player. Your comeback player of the year he played in the world baseball classic for the american team. That offseason with his father's the coach griffey batted five twenty four but the usa failed to reach the semifinals. During the the second game of the thousand six regular season griffey hit home run five thirty seven surpassing mickey mantle for twelfth. All time list. He returned may eleventh from knee injury after sir after suffering one on april twelfth and hit a walk off three run home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning against the washington nationals on june fifth griffey tied fred mcgriff record for hitting a home run in his forty third different ballpark at saint. Louis cardinals busch on june nineteenth griffey hit a career career. Run at five. Forty eight tying him with mike schmidt then six days later pass schmidt with five forty nine on june twenty-seventh he hit five. Hundred and fifty is five hundred and fiftieth career. Home run against the kansas city royals on september twenty fifth. Two thousand and six griffey hit his twenty seventh home run of the season against the chicago cubs pitch relief. Pitcher scott ir to tie reggie jackson for tenth all time on the home run list. Griffey's injuries continued in two thousand six offseason however while on holiday in the bahamas with his family he broke his wrist. Griffey said his fan. His hand felt finding the expected to be ready to go for the two thousand seven spring training and anger. This is about the time where i really started paying attention to baseball. And my dad would be explained to me who griffey was and how important he was to baseball. And and just how important was to ham which is a big reason as to why i am such a big fan of griffey today and growing up in central ohio. There was a thing If you were in the league there was a a program at the high school was involved in that. If you complete the program you got an opportunity to go onto the field in need some players and i remember dusty baker and i met joey votto and you know we walked around the field and i think i might griffey to And got some handshakes from some of the guys and they everybody. Who's there was super really. Just awesome super. Nice brandon phillips. I remember it was it was. It was an awesome experience. That i got to do and and and i think that's why a such a love for the the terrible late dots red steam stat. Were that were just not very very good. But at the beginning in two thousand seven season. Where we're you know taking off right here. Griffey was moved to right field and reds manager. Jerry narron said that quote. I've got to do everything. I can to put our best club out there. My feeling that with ryan friel out there gives us a strong defense up. The middle griffey changed his number from thirty two three two honors three children. During the next two seasons griffey would wear the number forty two on april fifteenth. Beginning the tradition known as jackie robinson day. That's really really cool. That he kind of started that. And that's actually something that i didn't know before. I was researching this and it's because of him wearing that in a couple of other like things that i could probably get into another segment That that griffey is the reason i bet. Jackie robinson day is thing and and that's i mean he's he's just a puts him an even higher on my list of my favorite athletes of all time but on may tenth two thousand and seven griffey hit six home his six home run of the season for five hundred sixty ninth of his career tying rafael romero for ninth place on the career home. Run list you pass. Paul marilyn may thirteenth in griffey tied harmon killebrew for eighth on the all time list. With five hundred and seventy third home run on may twenty second then surpassing him on may twenty fifth on june twenty second. Two thousand seven griffey made his first return to seattle after trade to the reds before the game. The mariners honored him with a fifteen minute presentation which include a highlight reel of his playing career with the mariners. A presentation of the house that griffey built and quote that the house that griffey bill in quotes memorial by the mariners hall of famers and former teammates j burner and edgar martinez. A four minute standing ovation from a sold out crowd graffiti. Expect such a welcome or such a welcome or a turn out by the fans when he came back and a short but emotional speech was given by griffey afterwards. Many of the fans in attendance made signs professing their gratitude and admiration for him or toward him with quotes such as the house that griffey bill seattle junior griffey. We miss you. And griffey went one for five in the game and griffey his five hundred and eighty third and five hundred eighty four. Th career home runs tying surpassing mark maguire for.

It doesn't have quite the same. Importance as Mother's Day. Should not right I mean it just it's sort of and the fact that comes like a month later. Kind of makes it even less important. It's just sort of like this little. Tackle hat tip. Yeah, it's like an added Father's Day. Shower here, wife mom with gifts. Then it's dad's turn. It's like. We got you some golf tees. It's just like it doesn't have the same energy behind it right. There's no brunch tradition. Usually. DAD is out there cooking. You know grilling or something it just. It's a little different. This town by suggesting that Ken Griffey junior at age like fifty or whatever it was at the time and hitting like a buck, twelve should be benched. Put on the bench. People weren't happy about it. Michael minded me. The Ken griffey junior was a legend in this town that I had been here for like three months, and maybe I should shut definitive statement I think the mariners should sit Ken. Griffey Junior, not just against lefties. The mariners should sit him. He should change his role. He should no longer be the primary D. I'm not talking about dropping him down from third or fourth to sixth or seventh, the Mariners should sit Ken Griffey Junior. They should put him on the bench. He was the batting third or fourth. "MLB network they will have a documentary called junior story about Ken Griffey junior a ninety minute documentary about the kid all one of my favorite baseball players if not be my favorite absolute one hundred percent baseball player growing up I mean there's nobody cooler than Ken Griffey junior when you kind of look back at his career in like the expectations of a number one pick being able to become a hall of Famer he won the MVP thirteen time all star the M. V. P. the ten time gold glove seven time silver slugger he weighs a all star game MVP so many different stats and then obviously the six hundred and thirty home runs in one of the great what ifs in sports history because what if Ken Griffey junior never got hurt during his days with the right home like would he have gotten to the plateau of surpassing Hank Aaron for the all time home run list what do you have gone down as the greatest baseball player to ever play the game if he was able to stay healthy because really what took place is all of those seasons were in his like early thirties he was kind of robbed of at bats full seasons and really above average play from the kid who continue to play until he's forty which is pretty crazy and itself is fifty six home runs two years in a row in ninety seven ninety eight to play for twenty years earlier he was on the white Sox yeah K. Williams very happy that he was able to finally get Ken Griffey junior but yeah I mean look you want to talk about the D. I don't want to say the originator of swag but pretty close pretty close and your logo the the swingman logo so sweet I conduct the shoes I mean listen easily one of the best swings in baseball easily easily it's definitely the prettiest looking right like there's not a sweeter swing integrity junior swing also tonight on the MLB network a junior will debut George Kenneth Griffey junior ten junior he five to center fielder sweets and winning smile helped define a new age baseball's popularity for me playing baseball was what I wanted to do I want to be able to leave a mark on the ball somehow.

Andrew Luck retirement: Here's hoping he finds peace and fulfillment in whatever is next to come

"Colts quarterback Andrew luck retiring played six seasons in the NFL he missed all of the twenty seventeen season made one A. F. C. championship games the forty four time pro bowler with zero Super Bowl appearances and there are some people as expected Joe on social media and elsewhere that are calling into like a botched I think he's a disappointment I think that's fair to say but I don't think you can call a guy who was predominately injured and then played well when he was healthy Abbas injure looks kind of like a bill Walton to me now I guess bill Walton did win a couple of championships including one with the Celtics when he was coming off the bench but he had his career defined by injuries I think that's more lock then putting him in that Ryan leaf Johnny Manziel category which I just don't think it's fair at all no no no no no I. V. kebab that would they they got to an AFC championship game he made pro bowls as you mentioned and if you can't shake the injury bug well that's a completely separate topic if you want to call it a disappointment you want to call it one of the great what ifs in sports not just football but just sports you know sometimes I always wonder what would have looked like if Ken Griffey junior could have stayed healthy throughout his entire career in baseball those I think are fair conversations but this business that he is some sort of a bust com on people let's step away from the Twitter machine for a little bit let's get away for that to think this through a little bit before we start talking that noise you know that that were just pops like it's an evocative word it's you have an emotional reaction when you hear it but I I do think that it's disappointing I I think he's one of the most hyped quarterbacks to ever come into the league and to see him with zero Super Bowl appearances on his resume at least for now I keep reminding myself tonight Joe that Andrew luck story may not be quite done here mom because you know twenty nine years old whenever you retire like rob Gronkowski retires similar age you know not not that much older than and you lock in everyone says the same thing just wait until November in ground pool plug himself back into the New England Patriots in here we go so I would not be shocked to see a lot get healthy and come back but tonight certainly he signed it sounded pretty resigned to the S. and like he had given it some serious thought and I imagine I can only imagine how the colts organization feels you know after preparing for a season where they thought they were going to be Superbowl contenders with one of the top G. M. as in the league in Chris Ballard all of a sudden they have Jacoby per set as their starting quarterback after luck made the announcement colts owner Jim Irsay gave his reaction to Andrew luck's retirement right now we're just thankful about what Anders meant to this city I know a lot of a lot of range of emotions go through our fans and and that's a a natural thing that we can all relate to it was something obviously that we are hoping that might be something that that could have went a different direction but if he had a file is hard and and that's what he did and so again we have nothing but gratitude and thankfulness for for the blood sweat and tears you spill the as number twelve and part of our hearts broken and I

I mean this is this is an organization. That's had a hall of Famer in Griffey a one day hall of Famer in each row. Who knows what's what's going to be the case with Edgar Martinez? I would suspect if Harold Baines gets in primarily as a designated hitter throughout his career that Edgar Martinez cannot be very far behind with enshrinement to cooperstown. Each euro should already be in the hallway time Felix. This isn't going to be an interesting case because you're gonNA look at the numbers and you're not gonNa love them but the people that remembered him pitching will get him in. Remember he wants the title and I hate getting snobby about championship rings things but he wins the title with the Arizona diamondbacks. He was the most valuable player in that two thousand and one world series so he definitely deserves to be remembered as diamondback despite how great he was perhaps the greatest Seattle Mariner a pitcher at least in franchise history. Mike Trout, Angels finalizing a record 12-year, roughly $430 million extension

"Today might trout sign. The biggest contract in American sports history. Twelve years four hundred and thirty million dollars. Not only does he get the most money over the course of his contract beating Bryce Harper. But he also surpasses that Grank for the highest average annual value. No. Just saying. Wow. Oh, hi. Thank you. I like. Yeah. I crazy. And you know, why that sixty eight dollars a minute for the next twelve years. Would anyone make over a dollar a minute? Plenty of people would. But I'm just saying like how like it's not a huge percentage of people that make a dollar a minute. Sixty bucks an hour. Think about sixty dollars an hour. That's a ton of money. Yeah. Gene. He's getting paid crazy. Second right insanity. He's like Joel Embiid in the Hulu commercial, Hulu has live sports. Then they just throw money at him who has live sport that. That's my trout just hand me the money as I'm walking down the street because I'm getting unbelievable. But you know, what as a player? He absolutely deserves it as a baseball player strictly. The most gifted baseball player we have seen. Since Ken Griffey junior was in his prime in Seattle, and many people would argue might trout is better. But it brings up an interesting. Discussion. This contract empowers Mike trout to continue to do nothing for the game of baseball in terms of promoting it might trout does very very very very little to promote the game of baseball. And this contract empowers them to continue to do the same thing. The question is is that the right thing. Like is it incumbent upon somebody like Mike trout to promote the game of baseball. Should he be promoting the game of baseball? Should he make more appearances? Should he tried to be more commercials? Should he try to be on sitcoms or whatever it is host Saturday Night, Live, whatever they it is should Mike trout. Be more of an ambassador for the game of baseball because he's not. Four hundred thirty million dollars mean that he doesn't have to because if he's still worth that much to an organization, then why should he have to go above and beyond to promote himself? The angels in baseball. Or is it like, okay, dude? Like. You're getting four hundred thirty million dollars. You think you could? You know appear on a few more talk shows. I know they can't make him do that. I'm talking about the just the the public opinion thing. Do you think that he should nowadays game paid four hundred thirty million dollars over the next twelve

"And I'll admit I've been critical of his boxing ability at times, but that man has always got a chance with the best in the world because he has got this free. Freak of nature power. That is just I mean, it is like watching Vince Carter dunk. It's like watching Barry Bonds hit a woman. I shouldn't use very it's like watching a Ken Griffey hit home runs out. That was when I could come up with you know, it's like watching Michael Jordan play like LeBron play Koby play like the it is a leak a leak. I'm talking about in the world. There is no one else that could do what he does or earliest very very few a meantime, what he say point zero one percent of the world probably lesson that in. So I'm glad that got cleared up because while size can definitely add power with some people when you have that God given ability to knock a man clean out. His but knock is so out his body. It don't really matter. If you're if you're five even ten pounds less it, it's you know, you got that power, man. Yeah. Man. Look interesting to see that back in the ring. "Forty four percent Cal Ripken junior. Forty percent. Dale, jR. Thirteen percent. Four percent junior. Ceo. Ken Griffey junior leading the poll is very popular, man. Daler dealer in our juniors. One of the most popular people on planet earth hundred percent. I mean, there's just no doubt about that. There's a great I guess video on social media of him going trick or treating with his kid for the first time. He's got a six year old daughter six month old daughter and. Seeing other people trick or treating dressed as him. Got to be really weird. We'll we'll show we'll show that on the show later on in advance of DALE'S appearance or well DALE'S here fun with that. No going rich Eisen for. I don't think. So I know we can do running the forty only good the only rich Eisen if you will that I've seen go as me was somebody who did that at a football game. We did a, thanks. We didn't Halloween night game in Miami years ago. It was Miami. And Cincinnati and somebody came dressed as me. You know, holding up they had hold up a sign like I'm rich Eisen or something like that. And of course, the guys had a good time with that. That was that was the the wake off victory. Oh, right. Cameron wake safety. I remember that was I was that night. Are you ready for my four down here? I am okay. Let's down here on the richeisenshow. Please. Downs with rich. Why did you? Okay. Let's do four downs right here. I down I down the Philadelphia Eagles defending Super Bowl. Champions are coming off a bye week having easily the greatest by week may be in the history of by weeks in the National Football League. They won in London to go four and four essentially in their way, you could say saving their season but keeping their season in their hopes for the divisional alive at four and four but that big win over Jacksonville. And then a couple of days later acquired golden Tate for a figurative song. If you will basically give it in the third round this year that was their own in exchange for a rental that if they don't resign golden Tate, they'll get a compensatory pick for them. It'll just be a few picks lower than the one that they gave up potentially. So it's essentially going and adding a tremendous threat on behalf of their team for their quarterback. Who is now thrown a touchdown pass. And twenty one consecutive games only. Andrew luck has thrown for more. So they're feeling pretty darn good about themselves during that by week. The giants were off as well. But the Dallas Cowboys fell on Monday night football in the most horrific fashion to three and five. Setting that entire week of turmoil up prior to the Cowboys coming into their house while the team that sits at the top of the division. Washington loses at home to Atlanta and loses to starting guards on their offensive line in the process. Best buy week.

"I think you probably have seen the commercial that that we did for the postseason with Ken Griffey kind of highlighting the emotion that our players bring to the field. We feel like that's a fresh look in our game. We think that fresh look is really important to attracting a younger audience. He talked about pace of play initiatives. We think we your pace. Wine is a Rogaine time was down. We think the mound is all and the tiny, the inning breaks limiting the number of warm up pitches were affected. If they can affect the outcome of any games. Players didn't complain about them. So we feel good about the effort. Lead your tweets. First one BUSTER from ground rule trouble at ground rule trouble says, alright, BUSTER, give me your over under on the number of consecutive seconds that Red Sox fans, boom, Manny, Machado. When he first comes to the plate, I'm setting the line at fifty seconds. You also wants my perspective which I'll give after years. No, you go. First, you tell me what you think is going to have fifty seconds is a long time, man, that's a really long time. They're going to boom and they're going to boom heartily, but it won't be for fifty seconds. I'm saying I'm putting the over under at about twelve and a half seconds and it. It's going to be right around there. Fifty seconds is a really long time. I agree with you, and let's face it, Chris sale and sandy Leone. We'll have a lot to determine with that because they're the ones who can sorta linger in delay and sort of stand around before they get set to pitch the longer. They delay the more the Machado he had. I think Chris sale and sandy Leona gonna want to go right to work like I don't. They're gonna mess around. He's going to be announced. Gonna, walk on played. He's gonna get booed and then Chris sale is going to be on the mound. He's fast worker. Sandy Leona will be behind the dish and they'll get ready to go to work. The only way player gets gets booed that long and we who was it last year? Remember when Richhill stood behind the mount and Yuli gurriel yes, yes. Yeah. It was rich hill who dictated how long was booed for, but even that wasn't fifty seconds. I mean maybe it's just because of the industry that we're in. But if you do any radio, a producer gets in your ear and says, hey, we're gonna feel fifty seconds. You go, oh, man, that's a long time that really starts to Iraq. I don't. I don't think it'll go fifty seconds, but I appreciate the question ground-rule trouble. Next one from Jake Reagan at Jake underscore DB sports. Jake says there plenty of positive superlatives for World Series. Teams grittiest most experienced luckiest, but would you call this year's two teams the most talented in their respective leagues? Yes. One hundred percent. I mentioned my conversation with Sarah talked with folks with the Astros and the Red Sox. They have so much respect for the Red Sox and the town on the team in the approach of the hitters and the depth of the lineup and how difficult it is to navigate through that..

"Restate again for you guys for folks listening. I voted for Barry Bonds back when I voted. I stopped voting for years ago because I think the the voting is ridiculous. I voted for Barry Bonds and voted for Roger Clemens every year that I had about in front of me there they were eligible. I don't think that buries ever going to get into the hall of fame. I that. That because I think that that block of writers who made up their minds, they're never going to vote for someone associated with PD's is a rock-solid thirty five to forty percent. And I don't think that that's changing and by the way, I think next winter will be the first time we have a player voted in the baseball hall of fame unanimously Mariano Rivera, I think will be the first player to get that is it? Is it Seaver that or. Ninety eight percent number. Why him BUSTER as as opposed to say, really Mays and Hank Aaron. By the way, if you ever wanted just shake your head at writers and how knuckle headed me and my predecessors have been, you go back and look at the past voting, you know who to vote for Willie Mays who doesn't vote for Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson the year that he was eligible seventy six percent twenty four percent didn't. Ken Griffey junior is the highest percentage. I think he passed. Seabra might be wrong, but only four voters didn't pick him. I think quite frankly, Michael. The reason why is because now the votes are increasingly becoming public and the scrutiny is there. And so I think a lot of writers are looking at their balancing I want to. I don't know if I want to be the out there trying to explain why didn't vote for Mariano Rivera, arguably the greatest postseason perform in the history of the sport. BUSTER only is eight. By the way before I let you go, you mentioned that when you voted and you haven't voted in for years, but when you voted, you voted for Clemens and bonds every time I would too if I had a ballot, but I'll let you explain why you did vote for them when you had a vote. Why? Because I think you have to look at players in the context of their times the the PD era basically came out of a complete failure from the whole institution, whether it was management side, the union leadership, obviously the the players who were using, but also the clean players who didn't step up writers like myself. We did a lousy job of covering this issue added that you had a period of about twenty years when I think not only the major league level, but at the minor league level, literally thousands and thousands and thousands of players were doing this in that vacuum. And so every year when we pick out, you know a berry bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark Maguire. That's so ridiculous. You know, it's it's retroactive morality that the writers need to get over and they have to stop trying to pretend to be the morality police for the sport. Keep in mind as far as him LBJ concern. Barry Bonds is a member in good standing works for the giants. Roger Clemens is unlike Pete Rose was banned from the sport. The hall of fame puts him on the ballot every year the writers need to get over themselves. I agree with you a hundred percent a BUSTER. Thank you. For this look forward to talking to you next week, is this all kind of comes down the stretch? I have a great week. Okay. Guys, take care BUSTER only. We've got fasttrack coming up for you in fifteen minutes. Michael Thompson information. I'm John Ireland..
