"Started off as computer comfort. So I can actually start from the beginning on what led me to this organization. And then we can move into more of the marketing Institute. So, the University of Iowa holds a student org fair. And when I was walking around there, I saw something that said, computer class, and this actually stems into why marketing was such a key factors. Because I looked at the word computer and I said, okay, I'm on my computer all the time. What does this mean is this for computer science Majors? That was mostly the initial reaction I had. And then I went up to some of the friendly executive board and talked to them and learned that, oh, this is an organization that off pretty much Bridges. The Divide between college students and seniors and learn from one another and teaches seniors. About different types of Technology from birth. When I joined the executive board, we realized how this is not just about computers. Technology is advancing so fast as you can see. Now most of the stuff today is virtual, so I thought it was important that we wanted to expand and Rebrand the name computer Comfort. There's an amazing marketing Institute from tippie College of Business. Had our student org chosen to do a whole rebranding by adjust. Join the org at this time. And a whole class took all of our values. Our mottos, and I saw what we had is computer comfort and each group in this one class had the opportunity to present to us rebranding ideas which was awesome. I loved sitting there. I felt like a judge getting to be able to pick the best presentation and the amazing Graphics that they created. It made the organization feel sick. For special also in this process and each presentation was great. We wanted to at one point take little parts of each presentation. We have to choose one, but that's how it came to be device advice. So computer Comfort to device, device are two completely different names. And I definitely think Harris would have been proud of the name change because it's not just computers. Nowadays, we have tablets, we have iPhones, especially a few years ago, when some of the main questions we got were about iPhones with out, a younger generation, buying iPhones for the mom or dad or their grandparents. And that's them looking down at it being like what do I do with this? How do I we did check with Harris? It was one of the things that we wanted to do. Let him know what's going on. Peggy Stover was the professor who runs the marketing Institute Bell of Olsen was one of the students who actually created the logo along with her teammates wage So we shared it with Harris. Got a call with him, he wasn't able to drive up from st. Louis and he loved the idea. He loved the broadening and he just loved that we were still doing it that we were still sticking with that same mission of getting seniors and college students together to talk and to be with each other to support each other. And sometimes technology was the excuse. And there were definitely skills being learning, but it was just an opportunity for people to come together, who just, frankly, weren't spending enough time together. Cuz colleges tend to be filled with young, people, and senior homes tend to be filled with older people. Yeah, so Harris, love the idea off and we just are very proud to be part of Harris, Frank's Legacy here at the University of Iowa. Okay? Now, you talked about this a little earlier before we started recording can walk and, and read that. Same question, do you? What is the appeal? What was the appeal for you for this organization and just hearing those two groups together birth? In conversation about technology. So, the first appeal like I said, was, when I saw computer Comfort something that I've never seen before. Something, that's so new. And I love talking to my grandparents. Why isn't this a skill that every college student, or even college student? And Below range of Ages? Should feel comfortable talking to older, Generations as college. Students were working up to a certain career and I feel like it's essential work with all different populations and all different ages. So aside from the technology aspect, which is my second point, I would say that just creating that connection and be able to just talk about life. They're not different. They love talking about their college days or I love learning about the bird house that they have in their backyard. In my last session, we were talking about that the Technologies Aspect is just a whole nother added Factor because I think that if seniors are given more of the resources that they can get from the organization or even beyond the organization, they're going to be able to feel more on a level of their grandkids, or their daughter or son, two, great aspects, that Drew me in. Yeah, absolutely. I can't, you mentioned earlier that the initial groups of students made the connections out in the community to the senior homes and whatnot. When you enter the picture of either, do you base built on their connections and make other Connections in the community? Then so I actually had the wonderful surprise of being given this role when the pandemic started so long, I had been in active, volunteer and Outreach and external relations a part of that executive board position. Before the pandemic started, I had the opportunity job You to go to three of the senior centers in Iowa City. We worked with Walden Place, Oak, Knoll and Senior Center. And we had the opportunity to go to these places with our volunteers and find be able to be one-on-one with different seniors. So, when I took the position as president, now, there was the added challenge of we're already trying to teach seniors technology. Am I going to try to do this virtually and add a whole nother added extra Challenge on to this? I took the challenge and last semester was my first semester as president did a lot of brainstorming with the executive board.

"Aravita Woolsey and Ken Brown Aveda is an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa studying speech and hearing sciences as well as minoring and American Sign Language. She is involved in various organizations on campus including serving as president of device advice which is the topic of our conversation today. Can Brown is an award-winning scholar and serves as the Ralph L, sheets professor of management and Associate Dean in the tippie College of Business. At the University of Iowa game serves as the board, president of the Iowa City, Community School, District foundation and also a co-founding advisor at the University for computer Comfort, which is now called device advice. All right, great. Well, thank you both for joining me today. Thank you for having us. Thank you. Yeah, so we'll start with our opening question, which is, how do you take care of yourself off? If you double start with you, okay? So I truly believe that taking care of yourself, especially as a college student has to do with setting a good routine. And recently, I've been trying to focus specifically on a good sleep schedule and that's really made a huge impact on my life and not just to sleep schedule. But home I take different times to rest, especially being a busy college student and whether that's doing something enjoyable with friends or just doing something for my own time. I think those are took two things that can be defined as rest. I also am huge into just health and wellness and keeping up with your body and what it needs and rest comes into town but also what food you intake and different things like that. I think are very important to just living a lifestyle where you can stay happy day to day. Yeah, absolutely. How much sleep do you think you get on a regular basis? I always try to count eight hours. So, recently, I've been going to sleep by, this is for the weekdays 11 a.m. waking up at like 8 a.m. so I'm more than eight hours which is really nice. And I'm glad I've achieved that over the years. Wow, good for you. I'm, I'm not there yet, but good for you. All right. Ken, what about you? How do you take care of yourself? Well, when you first sent me this question, my immediate response was not as well as I should. So I was taking notes as a veto was talking because I feel like it's a lifelong, journey off the books that really influenced me was Arianna, Huffington's book, Thrive, and it kind of helped put together in a bigger package for me. The idea that thriving and true Wellness is really multi-faceted. She talked about wisdom and learning and about giving being in a relationship where you're giving and and helping and making the world better. So I would say for me that I constantly struggling with getting enough sleep I know it's critical and eating well cuz I love to eat all kinds of things. I shouldn't you know too salty and too sweet at the same time. I really do think that you can make a great day and and build towards great health. If you're sneaky malistic lie and it's okay to have one day where you maybe eat too much sugar in one night. You stay up late because you're with good friends. So My Philosophy is I don't worry too much about sticking to anyone Rule and the phone number. Maybe I should be better about a schedule, but I try to think about taking care of my body, taking care of my mind, taking care of my soul and doing that by paying attention, to not just me and what's happening my body. But to the relationships and the ways that I'm giving back to the people around me, that certainly has been a real critical part for me about feeling healthy, and thriving is being able to be in a position to give back to others, great. I definitely want to say, I don't have it all together. Once made it sound like, I do, but you're right. I don't you doing good things but altogether home. All right. Well let's talk about device advice and I'd like to start with. Can can you tell us about the origin story of this organization? A lot of talk about this and I really appreciate you asking because this really is a beautiful story, about a beautiful man. So I've worked at University of Iowa for a long time and had known of a gentleman. Who had donated some money to create the Judith Frank business communications center and it was Harris, Frank who had given money to create a Communication Center in honor of his wife. So it didn't change his name but her name and I'd heard good things about him. You know, that he was just a truly generous. Soul was actually the father of an amazing faculty member. Long-standing fact, remember now Emeritus Professor Nancy hauserman wage everybody talked about how great Harris was, and I was really sad. I never got a chance to meet him until one day when I was called to a meeting, I was given a little bit of background and the background was that the Harris like to build things off and some may be familiar with him because here is Frank is actually considered to be the co-founder of the national Senior Olympics. So he created the Senior Olympics in st. Louis he'd been very involved, non-profit space. You had a 50-year career in real estate and was able to spend a lot of time giving back a serving as board chair of the Jewish Community Association working with all of these amazing. Nonprofits in the Saint Louis area nationally. So he got involved in creating the Saint Louis. So, let Senior Olympics, which became the national Senior Olympics. He was on that founding committee and off. He, he got another idea as he got a little older, his grandkids were spread all over the country. Well, he was sort of struggling as bright as he was sometimes to use a, a computer and iPad do teleconferencing or video, conferencing or email. And he decided that it would really be great. If college students who seem to always be learning, new technology would help seniors and he started actually took one school business in st. Louis close to his home and they started a group called computer comfort. So the meeting that I was called into was Harris. Frank full-on sales mode trying to convince the typical Business University of Iowa to create a chapter of computer comfort. And man was I sold like this guy. I mean, I know why he was great in real estate. He just sold it, and everyone else was like that. Is a good idea, but I drank the Kool-Aid and I was like, I'm going to do it. So I actually recruited for students, they did a lot of the groundwork. They picked the first executive board, that executive board started and made relationship a senior homes and they jumped right in within a year, they were relationships with senior homes that were lots of face-to-face events. And it was just really amazing thing to see was also really rewarding to see Harrison's reaction because for him having built something in the Senior Olympics, he just saw this as having so much value to the senior community. And he had an inkling to of just how much it meant to college students cuz he had seen it in st. Louis. And then he was seeing it here at the University of Iowa, went through some maturation and some semesters were better than others. And then there was a rebranding process and this is about when Evita comes into play a video, do you want to say a word about the marketing Institute? Cuz that was a really nice step off. Think in the maturation, the development of what.

You know, that's what you know, That's what I'm focused on is doing my part. I'll just get get a win right And it's crazy as it is, and 47 is still not out of it in this crazy Kobe year football. You know, there's five games left and anything could happen as a team. Is that the rational thinking of you guys? Just thinking one week at a time, you know? We know that it Z there. We know it's not out of the picture, but it's same time is like he can control what you can control this week and you keep stacking. Each week you let the chips fall where they may. And then today you you'll get the result that you looking forward, But you're looking for the result before you do the process. So you handle what you need to handle. Then you're not gonna get what you looking for. So you gotta find a beauty in the process. Enjoy what? What It is now each day each week. Whatever it is And then one time comes for Sunday, So put it out down Sunday. Have you noticed a changed? I guess only been a day or two. Since you guys are practically maybe just the first day practicing, But is there a different feeling out there? Or is it just pretty much the same? And whoever the coaches were gonna do what we do know different feelings? More energy. You know, that's fine around. You know, have a good time. Culture's changing perspective changes when the same time that I know that, you know, it's go time. What if you know each time we out there like no, wait. The rats No wasted. I'm not seeing the Big East Road big can cool and all the biggies is where everybody knows things fight, no matter No matter what it was now, you know, you know, you know you spoke. You throw the ball a little bit. Where did you get that? Quarterback of sky was looking at your career. Your seven for eight. I don't know what the incomplete was for 233 our four touchdowns. Yeah. You gotta ask my mom and dad about that one. Um, that's just something that was just born with unable to do some of the athletic stuff. Just put my mind to it. I just do it. Just one of the things we're have to give to do it. As long as you believe in yourself. You can do it. Were you high school quarterback? I WASI was high school quarterback throwing up while you're doing that option program. All right, I'm going to get to tell. You know, we could dig some tape up now we could find you get the whole baby we got they got now. How to hold and all. I make sure that I'm gonna tell you win, but I worked my magic. Yeah, we could do you a bunch of first because the first pass you called over the lines with the touchdown? Didn't you decided that wasn't enough and got the two pointed right after? Yeah. That was a full day's work right there. If you're gonna work your mind about work, right? Yes. We recommend and then feel free to ignore a recommendation number one Kylie Minogue, who Wow she's still around, isn't letting a pandemic in the subsequent lack of open clubs stop her from dropping and unapologetically disco embracing. Can't believe that from Cali Minogue Dance your pants off album. It's escapism and euphoria, she told Esquire. People need that from her album entitled This go? Wow, That's a brave woman. Thistles. "We can do that We are the factory. Did you see the meeting room recently got brand new carpet. No, I can't wait to go in. Take a look. I'm going to do that. I don't know what happened or who did it. But Ken Brown is in there right now. Having a conversation with who? That betray flowers. Now entering the meeting room must sit down with your favorite Detroit Lions. Here's Ken Brown and our guest today is Trey Flowers, Defensive and Detroit Lions. How you doing? Good. All right, I notice is not the start of the season. You guys wanted to be on too. But there are 14 games left. How you guys approach in this week's game. We approach it, like, you know, we've got a road gang and it's a great team and they're gonna corner so I'm not a very high power off. Do a quarter bit great, Rob receivers. Good right, one game, so Way approaching it like, you know, going there and, you know, be prepared to be prepared to go against great teams. I know you're new to the casino of being a first year last year, but, you know, actually, we don't play the Cardinals in Arizona every year. Just seems that way. Because it seems like the last five years all Detroit doesn't go out there. Zona. Did you play a lot when you were in New England? Well, I think I played it once, and that's one of those high gave yards of four or five and there's there's just hide in the elements. You think with no fans in the seats and these games like that. It'll be a really challenge for you guys this week. I mean, you know football, so you know, regarding fans understands and not, you know. Still the A ball out there and honey are so still two teams out there battling for winning. So I don't think it would be much different as faras the atmosphere like that way we've gotta be able to bring our own energy and, you know, make plays. And allow us to stay in the game. Being defensive lineman. No. Always thought that when your home is a defense of lime, and you had an advantage by the crowd noise and you get off on the snap counts on, you know, the office unglamorous sometimes go offsides and things, but this is a totally different thing. Now. Have you noticed that type of line play with no with no fans? Yeah, that is a such thing. As far as you know, you get the Fans kind of impact the game that way. Like you say, office salami, you know, sometimes jump offsides when you know when you won't be finished, of course, is the home game. And, you know the fans got the whole stadium rock it So you know, they probably won't be able to hear the snap count or You know that you could They come out the bar late or or, you know, like, jump off early, but, um, so I mean, it may have affected this year. I haven't really noticed me much, but Inarguably Lee. Why? I guess you could say main may not be much of a factor, you know, obviously with without saying also noticed last week. I know you had a couple of guys out that you played a lot of inside against Green Bay. What is the difference when you move inside from you personally things you watch out for the things you can get away with. Playing inside that you do outside is a big difference into you know, it happens a lot faster. You know you're taking me had to be found. And your fundamental have to be on point. You know, a lot faster than down. Whether on outside, you know you have a little space to you know, justice still get your hands ready? Did you foot footwork ready? So you know is not as you still have to have great technique. But it is not as prevalent on the outside, but even so, you know, and you know you deal with this as far as in the run game, obviously in a power game you're dealing with guys. Typically are much stronger, but maybe a little slower and, you know, so you know, you might use a little bit more equipment, guys, and rather on the outside guys in a little bit more athletic, so you can't use your equipment as much you probably had to use. You know your excuses so they don't have you on the occupying guards and stuff like that. They'll do they I mean, they're not putting your toe Just block. I'm not. I'm not, You know, like you got to make it 40 game and we don't need tricking you. About what 65 to 70 years. Good. Good. Well, you know, I got good. Take me so I can I can you know the pound difference of being, you know, kind of, you know, help without my taking. You seem like the kind of guy though, If they ask you to play knows God you would play it. Yeah. Didn't I play any any any position, Not doing a fume and I'm doing a field I got up to make a player goes well, what I had to do I move figured out, you know that they had been covered by them, figure it out and figure out my best way to do it well figure to figure out not know you guys are not happy with the defense has played the first couple of weeks. "Landrum well the heart of the motor city it's the Mitch album show with which album and Ken brown this hour brought to you by hospice of Michigan because life matters from beginning to end and by our community partners the Cooper standard foundation community partners passion for people special guest host Kevin Dietz cell phones in smart watches in school they can be a tool for learning but more often they're a bothersome distraction in Berkeley they're doing something about it it started as an unscientific experiment by administrators at Anderson middle school take smartphones away from students at lunch time on Fridays and see what happens they found the kids kinda liked it according to a survey more than nine and ten US teenagers thirteen to seventeen have access to a smartphone or use social media joining me on the line right now is Anderson school middle school principal Michael Ross Michael thanks for joining us thanks Kevin so tell us a little bit about this experiment at first and then the policy this year so last year to kind of ease into what we anticipated would be the new policy we started phone free Friday this so every Friday for the second half of the year we we had no electronic devices for the dates of cellphones had to be put away and markers and you know although wasn't necessarily scientific what we found is the interaction between the students increased significantly in particular at the lunch time period you had to be some clue complaining at first I imagine yeah you know the students complained at first it's interesting students in general are not quite in favor of the policy but parents overwhelmingly are even pretty good support of it you mentioned that the also seemed a little less anxious that's kind of interesting what what do you think's behind that well I think was smart phones especially with kids and even us as adults you know when students have their phones on them and their phones are constantly going off a different notifications whether it's social media Snapchat text messages I think it becomes overwhelming and when kids can't get the phone the other pocket they start to get anxious about it they might even get anxious about certain posts on social media so I think removing that distraction is definitely going to decrease the anxiety that were start missing in some of our students so you did the experiment and now a today was first day school right yes has so now it's a policy now what is the new policy and how is it received by the kids so the new policy is we call in a way for the day policy school starts at eight fifteen and at three fifteen and during that entire period including launched a student's phones have to be put away in their lockers and locked up for the day did they go for today did they do it to people make mistakes we didn't have one violator today are so good they won things are going well okay so the kids maybe don't love it but they're they're they're doing it they're going along with that how how did the teachers like it the teachers are kind of like the parents there are overwhelmingly in favor of it I know we had a few teachers that were a little concerned because they were using devices for academic purposes in the class but we've increased our technology devices for students so that's really become a non issue for the upcoming year so someone needs a calculator someone wants to look up something now you you can do it as an entire class rather than have the kids individually use go to theirs the smart phones yes and then obviously we have control over the devices because there are district devices but not their personal devices I feel like parents would generally before this you know they they they want their kids to be focused and paying attention to the to the classroom I I gotta believe some parents are like no I want access to my kids I'm gonna hide an extra cell phone somewhere in their lunch box or something you know the only concern that really came up was in I anticipated this would probably be the cases what if there's a lock down situation and the reality is is in the event of something serious you know in particular let's say if there was somebody in the building first and foremost we have destroyed protocols for safety that's first imports most and then secondly we have different protocols for communicating in the event that there's any kind of lock down and so what parents first inclination is to be in contact with their children through you know text messaging and whatnot often times you can have false information being sent to parents who then spread it and put that on social media and whatnot so the reality is is in a a real lock down situation safety is really the first priority and you know students need to be given their undivided attention to the adult that's around them to take direction again in the event that there was a serious situation so you're probably gonna have some adjustment period here for parents to they're going to have to learn to call the office and get that important information the office and and have have you make the decisions on on what to do with that information yeah the reality is is they're gonna have to go old school and they're going to have to you know try to communicate ahead of time with their children they can call the school made a message we have a student phone that can be used you know in our office so what they're certainly access if a parent really needs to get in touch or get a message to their child we have the means to do that will there be any exceptions for any students we will have some exceptions more like a medical exception so like we have some students for example who are diabetic and they have the have the means to communicate through their phone so those students will be allowed to have their phones on them and then a you know like any policy they'll be some exceptions here and there depending on the circumstances but on the whole will be enforcing this policy pretty strictly all right I think a lot of parents and school districts will be watchin Anderson middle school very closely thanks for joining us principal Michael Ross on the Mitchell I'm show thanks Kevin have a great night all right.

"About ten thirty yesterday morning. Football to golf ball sized pieces of concrete began falling down on the lower deck drivers returning around driving the wrong direction. It was it was basically a nightmare until around eight o'clock last night. Really it was it costs too much traffic problems around the area. All right. Well, what are we going to do is our is our new funding going to help with all of this? Joining me on the phone right now Cal trans chief of structures maintenance and investigation for bay area. I mean, I don't have concrete chunks falling down on my car is I'm driving right now. Right. So that's a good start. But what the heck happened yesterday? Let me assure the public, Dan the bridge is safe. We have put a temporary plate over the area issue and place. Pipe would underneath this joint restored all traffic to the bridge and in the next couple of days or next week or so hopefully, get some long term repairs out there. Okay. So so we have temporary things in place. But do we know what actually transpired yesterday? Basically, we had some what we call sprawling the concrete, which is basically as some concrete pieces breaking off from the bottom of the deck. From lane to joint fifty nine. So what what causes that to happen? I can't remember the last time I was driving, you know, on under a bridge in chunks of concrete started coming off what what causes that to happen. He mentioned it's not a common incidents at all. But it is an aging infrastructure that this kind of issue can pop up randomly. In Los inches. It's a case of wear and tear possibly heavy truck going over the bridge could be a combination of the two. Okay. So I mean, so we have a temporary repair in place. But what you just described to me. Sounds like this could happen again. And again, and again, so what is what is a bigger picture or longer term solution for this bridge and possibly others. I guess in greater bay area. Oh, they mentioned this isn't a common incident. So.

"Span of the bridge. Is that something you wanna do we're we're in the process of working with our partners to very to do that. Okay. Well, this listener writes, the crumbling of the San Rafael bridge is only the tip of the iceberg for the extremely sad state of affairs of our roads and highways across the state of California, Michael cabinet one. We hear that our roads and bridges face. Tens of billions of dollars in deferred maintenance backlog. Would you say that's accurate? We do hear that a lot. And I think it is accurate. I mean, first of all we have a lot of roads and highways we haven't invested in maintaining repairing an inspecting them. You can drive in other states and see that the roads and bridges and highways are in in far better condition. We have made recent investments both locally regionally and on a statewide level to better invest in both transit and highway freeway and road maintenance, so hopefully that will help and again, Michael Kevin Atwan is a staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle Ken Brown is also with us. He's the chief of structures maintenance and investigations of toll bridges for Cal trans can Brown. Does that mean that you oversee all of the toll bridges across the state, and yes, they're all in the bay area though? Oh, I see. Yeah. I was actually trying to remember if there was anything. And so that would be a toll bridge, are terribly talk. There used to be one in the port of Los Angeles. But it's free. So so then can Brown can you as somebody who looks at the integrity of these structures? Can you can you tell this listener who clearly has some concerns and distrustful of the state of our bridges that that they are safe and structurally sound right now. Well, you know, we do have a aging infrastructure and everyone's aware that s p one was a big key in moving repairs. Penetration forward in our case. The toll bridges we have funding through the tolls for rehabilitation. And we do have a contract coming up in the next six months that is looking at a painting critical areas in the bridge and taking some care other minor issues that we find. So there is investment in the bridges through early in the toll bridges to my office. In conjunction with the berry told authorities. Well, this listener writes, I live in San Rafael, and I got information text it to me by the Knicks all system from both the Marin county sheriff and the San Rafael PD, which was very helpful. Michael cabinats one. We heard from Randi wrench lawyer about communication issues. Do you have any sense of whether or not what some of the problems may have been that they are trying to address and how they might address them. I think part of it is the the location of the bridge, which is somewhat remote. And. You know, people on both sides. I mean, you were dealing with with two different counties and people trying to communicate sort of on what's happening on one side of the bridge, and what's happening on the other. There are a lot of systems now like Nixel, which is an information system that operates through usually local police departments. I was getting a lot of information from the seat from a C P website. You know? Of course, there's also Twitter and Facebook, and you know, there's an app called citizen and some of that's reliable. Some is not. But there's an off. There was an awful lot of information out there in one way, and in other ways, there was not a lot of official information. Well, Ken Brown is they're going to be a closure for maintenance and repair of the Richmond bridge anytime soon. And they'll be limited lane closure to do the work. Dad needs to be done to do the long term repair on this location. That's this weekend or it'll be done in the next week or so hopefully. Again, that'll be done at night the impact to the travelling public should be Menno Ken Brown of Cal trans and Michael cabin at one of the San Francisco Chronicle. And also, thanks to Randi Rensselaer who joined us earlier director of legislation and public affairs at the metropolitan transportation commission next. We'll talk about why migrant family separations are still happening. So stay with forum for that. I mean, a Kim. Here's what's coming up on forum in our second hour this morning night. Young was born in Cambodian refugee camp. And now, she's the owner chef at your mind, Oakland, which named one of the country's ten restaurants. We'll talk to her about her life and her mission to popularize Cambodian food. And at ten thirty. We'll talk all about casual carpools. Do you drive or ride in a casual carpool? "At that point. I probably wasn't going to do very well. So eventually we all figured out what it was. But the funny part was getting one getting off the bridge looking at the amount of debris that was collected a truck nearby. It was like an arm load the concrete you mean. Yes, it was very little. It was not. Yeah. It was not nearly as traumatic as I thought. Well, Rebecca, thanks for sharing your story. Michael cabinats want? It is interesting to hear Randy Rensselaer say that that the bridge itself is is sound it's that the concrete poses the safety risk to people. And I understand we're joined on the line. Now by Ken Brown of Cal trans. He's the chief structures maintenance and investigations of toll bridges four. Cal trans morning. Ken brown. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. So yes, we we have some sense of what caused this. Is there? Anything you want to add to this question of what caused the fine concrete? First off say that the bridge is safe. We have placed a temporary plate over the area and restore traffic to the bridge. So this incidence we had some sprawling which is basically broken concrete falling off the upper deck onto the lower deck as your listener just pointed out it was somewhat insignificant amount, but enough to her as stopped traffic and basically bridge down. So that we can do a full safety assessment. Again safety is our top priority. Even if it was not a lot of concrete, though. I mean, it kind of feels like we've dodged a bullet here. Right. I mean, it could have been more. There's more concrete on the bridge, and this was caused as I understand it from just normal shaking from cars and trucks going over the bridge, which means that it could easily happen again. So what's the plan for a long term fix? When will Cal trans release a plan for a long term fix? Well, just to be apprentice the bridge was inspected in detail in August, the twenty eight team we did not see any problem with this area. So. It could be anything from normal wear and tear too heavy load going over the bridge recently. So we do not know at this point really fully what happened or what caused it. But it's not uncommon or I shouldn't say uncommon, but it's not. A regular incident where concrete us all but as their infrastructure gets older, and it's not something that you would maybe unexpected. Then what's the plan to ensure that more concrete does not fall off? Well, right now, again, we've temporary plated in this location. We taken pie would and place it under the joint. Just in case. There is any potential for lose concrete to come off the bridge. So people going under it are safe. We are going back through and inspecting all the joints one more time to make sure that if it is a case of a heavy load truck that. We've identified if there are any other issues on the bridge. But there is a plan to figure out a more longer term fix, correct? Yes. Where we've we replaced almost ninety percent of the joint on this bridge. There's you know. I'm not sure off the top of my head. How many are still remaining, but those are monitored under pretty regular basis. And again, we haven't seen any problem with these joint during that time, we do have some investigation. We're coming up where we're doing some analysis with some high tech companies including ground penetrating radar and other.

One of our producers here, right? His his mom back in Pittsburgh. I went to see the Pittsburgh Penguins. Play the LA kings at the staple center with Zeke Elliott and company paying a visit to the Rams a couple of weeks ago that Saturday night I got to know a few other Pittsburghers in there. It was a grand time. But of course, the highlight when Ken Brown, I also met campgrounds twin brother and their older, brother. Oh, we picked. We pick sparked real good. What day what's going to happen with Antonio Brown? Like idea got any insight. No, I don't go non inside on hand. But let's wash Sidney Crosby. But anyway, it was a grand time. And with that being said Kent Brown's mom leaves the best voicemails as she reviews, unsolicited, movies and TV and otherwise in our pop culture. Here's her latest. One mess. I'll be out there giving away my inconvenient gifts. As I usually love it. But before that, you can watch the Vinci's if you have a taste if your appetite is officially wet for for some awards, given the Vinci's honoring the best of the fifty two Super Bowl so far best play best final couple of minutes of a game. What else best resume MVP? Craziest play. That's final two minutes, by the way. What would you guys say philosophically? Let's assume that I'm right that the Rams win the Super Bowl and Brady is five and four who do you rather whose resume do you like? Better Brady's or Montana's Brady's do you? Like that better. I mean, thirteen explains the super more than off of raising. I think that's I think that's right. And because people because I was on the side. I liked that cleanliness of like this year. Oh in the loss column that that looks good. Nobody can change that you were you were impenetrable in the big spot except that it's the LeBron thing like well. Yeah. You get to the finals or Joe or your record is Joe Montana's losing in games before you get to the big game. And so the yard on the biggest stage to take that big.
