"They don't have a huge lead to they don't have a bullpen like that, like the White Sox have Two nights ago. Was the formula right five innings adequate. Co two out of kopeck. One out of Kimbrel one out of Hendrix. That is a playoff game right there. You mentioned on Carmen Eureka. You really want to get six out of your starter? But as soon as he got the lead in the fifth inning, LaRussa pulled Kaiko. I thought that was interesting, he said. On the zoom two nights ago, if it was still tidy what to send chemical back out there, So it kind of tells you his mindset. He his complete confidence in his plus relievers. He'd probably rather start continue with the starter than throwing a minus reliever or reliever that comes in in a tie game, But they're definitely saving it for the for October for the for the starters, and it's also just running out that formula. That's the October formula. You're rarely going to get his seven or eight innings start. Out of a starter in October, unless he's just completely locked down. He just two times through 2.5 times through, maybe three. If it's Lynn, and then you move on to the reliever, so that's the formula more than anything. Jesse, The Cubs are going to start Kelvin Sampson today or whatever his name is. I know, I know. He coaches the University of Houston Cougars basketball team, but they got Some guy named Sampson. I follow the team. Who the hell is Adrian? Samson? Okay, It's not Kelvin Sampson. I thought it was. I don't know. If Sylvia what I've done this. I've been telling them to do the whole like baseball player or guy off the street like given waddle of name. And you have them. Guess if it's a Cubs player or a guy off the street, Adrian Samson is a washout. I don't wanna say it that way. But he he just did. Yeah, he was drafted by the Pirates. He's played for Seattle and Texas. Here's another guy they bring up that's not 21 22 20. He's 29. Adrian Sampson is 29. We started a bunch of games in the majors. I've got his record right here. What is he's like? Uh, he was four and five with a 4 96 in Iowa. This year in Iowa. He had a 4 96. So he's he's again not a prospect need. Neither is roughly Ortega. Wisdom is not a prospect. It doesn't mean he won't be here next year. But you don't invest in 30 year olds. You give them a role. You give him a roster spot. This is just all leading to a high draft. Put cap draft pick cap. What can I say? It is what it is. They broke the street. Listen to this step. Kyle Hendricks leads the majors and winds. He'd be just the third picture with that kind of a winning percentage on a team to lead the majors and winds If he keeps this up like There's only been two other times like Steve Carlton is famously one of them to lead the majors and winds on such a bad team. So you got to give credit to Kyle Hendricks. He is kind of stayed with his game through this through this mess. 14 wins for him. That's quite amazing on this team. Jesse. Have a great day, man. Okay, guys. Any updates on pastel pass along? Thank you. Got it..

"Bastard! Out of the day. Stat of the day comes that what stat of the day Uh, Here's the question. If you don't have a team, Is there a team worth rooting for? Because you see l A is not a Cinderella story. Just because of the history of U C. L A now this year, they are because they lost two of their Star players than another player. Go to the D League. Uh, I think that an injury as well. You know, they kind of well, they limped into the tournament, but you know they've caught fire. You know, it's different. When you see all that used to be the favorite. You're rooting for him or against him. So I would say U C l A would be fun to root for. Do you root for Gonzaga going undefeated and you root for Baylor to prevent Undefeated season. If those two meet, If you like redemption stories, Kelvin Sampson and Houston. Okay, maybe not. A tune in this team holds their opponents of 53 points per game. Yes, Tom, If you're not a fan of any of the four schools, I don't have to me. I got a route from Mark Few. They've come so close. They have been called a big major. All these years. I've been disrespected. He's got these guys so close to the finish line that can not only win the championship but do it in undefeated fashion, which hasn't been done since Bobby Knight 76 Indiana team. I'm all in on the jacks pulling this off. Yeah, I am, too, because I respect mark what he's done, how he's done it and I never understood why you were a mid major. Now, just because you weren't Duke or you weren't Kentucky or you weren't Michigan State, you were a mid major And it kind of started felt like it started with Gonzaga. They were the where they had the original mid major, or at least that designation. That label and it just felt like you were inferior. Like, uh, you know, you get to come into Thanksgiving, but you sit at that table. You got the kids table over there and then every year Never failed. We would have a so called mid major who would do some real damage. They would they would, you know, start doing damage to your brackets. Yes, he is a mid major more about the conference in the school. Well, but if Gonzaga is a a powerhouse, then there's still a mid major. Given the conference that there is right, right? Yes, which isn't fair to them. Because they're not a mid Their conference might be mid major. They're not. They're basketball powerhouse, but you're right it. It's kind of like this. Can you be both? Can you be a basketball powerhouse while you play in a sub standard conference? Yeah, it'd be fun in three years or talk about Gonzaga, Gonzaga again. There are bully they roll over these little teeth. They have to win next weekend to get there. There's still lovable until they win the title. But two years from now that they're getting all the recruits would be nice if somebody else other than Gonzaga got in there. Yes, club like Villanova and 85 would've been in mid May. They had all the earmarks of a mid major except that they were in the Big East. But nobody said UNLV was a mid major. That's so true. They were never in the major. No. But they didn't play in a great conference, did they? No, that's why they were undefeated. But we didn't allow them to be on their own on it. Well, I guess we did. You know, we never said all of Yeah, but they don't play anybody. Now They're a mid major. I don't even know if we knew what you know who came up with mid major That the power five I'm gonna guess they had something to do with it. By the way, the power five is not a real thing. That's not a real phrase. It's not a term like the power five football conferences that's not recognized term. It's just become And what we say like the Big 10. They're not actually bigger right? But the big ten's and copyright phrase actual Thailand the power If I was not real, it's a way to keep others out. Yeah, they're doing a good good. Good job. Great job. Yeah, but I look at Gonzaga as a on par with any of these other schools. We just look at Kentucky. And you look at Duke and you go. Well, they get the one and donors, you know, they get the great players there, Okay? Not this year, but they do. Gonzaga has gotten very good players. They just haven't had a player who could be the number one pick in the draft. And you may have that this year, but you've had guys who play in the NBA. And you have a coach who has been offered jobs elsewhere around the country and decided to stay there. I've great respect for that What he's been able to do there. All right, Jesse in Los Angeles, I just what's on your mind today? They date but Really like Carl. I kind of got a pin it for a second here now. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. It is a great day and a great morning to be a Bruin to fly the colors the blue and gold. Hi. I couldn't be more proud of that team. It wasn't pretty, but it was impressive to see their new back roads, new favorite player, Johnny Jews and go off And they played great team defense. No, Gonzaga. They're you know, they're they looked unbeatable. I think they're 14 Point Favorito open, But I'm gonna enjoy this for the next few days. I hope those young men do, too. I hope they realize how important this moment is. What it's done for the program. You say basketball back, baby. Go brew it E could just Johnny Juicing the lead U C L A to the upset. He scored 28 of you. CLS 51 points. The second. You see l a player ever to score at least half of his team's points in an N C a a tournament game yesterday if they could find a way to pass over the sags. I really okay. Just come down the next. Okay. You can do that. I'm not even going to go. I'm not gonna go there. With with Johnny's name and Passover coming up, Bill Walton scored 44 of you see Ella's 87 points in the national title game Back in 1973. Yes, Pole. Here's some irony. Johnny Jews sang his older brother. His name is Christian Jew saying, Hey, play for Harvard. One of the That's fantastic irony. I love it. I'm not even making that up. I wish I was. Now it is he the.

"To the free throw line, where he is two for six tonight four points. 10 rebounds, Kelvin Sampson slumps down in his seat on the bench, arms folded, waiting to go to the final four with Houston. Free throw good for Gore. He's built this Houston program all the way back to where they were in the eighties. Three straight N C. A a tournament for the first time in Houston since 1981 Day before Kelvin Sampson. 10 seconds away from the final four. 67 58 Thompson. Hands it back to Kalu. Five seconds. Lose three is good. And Oregon State will take a time out with 3.5 seconds to go down 67 61. It's six points down with 3.5 seconds to go seems a hill too steep for the Beavers Fantastic effort in the second half by Oregon State, But when When you dig that big a hole. You have to play pretty much a near perfect half to get back in. They came close. But the word two huge three point open freeze, You know, wide open threes. It didn't go. You're gonna miss him. Shots free throws. What really undid them is when you get yourself to the free throw line. Particularly in this case. A couple of pretty good free throw is 85 88% free throws missed the shot that would have given him a chance decided the game. No, but it would have given him a really good chance. But their inability to come up with defensive rebounds were pretty much 40 minutes of the game. That's even a bigger difference. 67 61, Houston. 3.8 seconds Olympic smile The face of Quentin Grimes the bench grinning ear to ear to a man on that Houston sideline. Inbound coming on the baseline. Juro runs the baseline of bounce into the corner. It's scooped up in the corner. There will be no foul and the Cougars pull their way to the Final four for the first time since 1984 67 61. Houston is back on the biggest stage the Final four. She's a cougar return this weekend with a six point win over the Oregon State Beavers. Two good friends. Wayne Take always class gentleman walked over coming. Sampson was in a bear hug with his son talent, one of his assistants and waited patiently to shake his good friends. Hand Forget Kelvin coach that Washington state years ago when Wayne was In Montana also, so there's a friendship there for a lot of years. But this Houston team has been so impressive and so consistent, really, Kevin, a have defended Eight quarters now of exceptional defense, and the way they attacked the boards. They give themselves a chance. They haven't shot it. Well, yet in the NC double a tournament, you would think if they're gonna Win two more. They're gonna have to shoot it a little bit better, but their defense in their rebounding has got them to the Final Four. Imagine the elation the emotion. Remember what this year has been like for each and every one of these teams. We've all had ups and downs over this last year. During this covert pandemic, Thies players and coaches have essentially been quarantined together. Since in some cases June in other cases, September covert testing daily in a bubble battling fighting, scrapping and clawing And finally You get the chance for this moment. To celebrate a trip to the final four after a road that has not been navigated by teams in any of our lifetimes through a pandemic. Get to this stage, one of incredible emotional outpouring we're seeing from these players, the first to make the final four in this covert year. And such an impressive Moment for these Houston Cougars who had the battle and you knew they would tonight and they battled their way into the final four, and it's amazing this standing here. We've just gotten used to this kind of celebration. All they could do was kind of run to the table's edge of the side of the court. And wave to their family and friends. Can't hold him for another. How many days until we get? Oh, Monday night. Now we're another week that we go on days now finally be able to hug their family and friends and really celebrate the way they would like to. For now, they will hug each other again. Happily, the T shirts stacked on the floor at mid court, celebrating a trip to the final four the players over grabbing those shirts,.

Don't trust gonzaga in the tournament whatsoever. Okay i never have. What's safer a one seed getting to the final four or two shawn watson being traded before draft day a one c four. Because i have a one-seat in the final four would if would you say you were saved for slide net thousand dollars to the one seed that you have in the final four. Yeah this wards shawn watson this one seat. I have in the final four. I also have them winning the whole thing because they're just that dominant got baylor or illinois. Who went michigan. Play next the winner of what game i has. The first round goes away. It's supposed to so the two games. After that i have georgetown upset in colorado. I do too. And i have georgetown win. That bet wise after moving on to play. Georgetown i florida state. Moving on to play michigan state beating michigan. I'm gonna tell you right now. Florida's taken can beat michigan and florida state. Can it can. And they're capable of boat race in a few of those teams. That's an athletic. Long coached team did did go ahead and blake and they will be in the final four. I have florida state playing alabama in the eight and beating alabama to move into the final four. I don't think that's a bad pick boy. Did you go. You went from lsu in the final four dollars. You not getting by michigan. Basically we're never gonna take his predictions. There's no chance i don't know man that candidate making that. Everybody picks that every the sexy three seat to pick this year because they started play wealthy and they won't make it. I had them beating iowa and usually. That's how you have to have them winning. It's to get there had them beating those teams to get there like you mentioned earlier. Keep an eye on. Hey listen you look at george. You look at the georgetown team there. Early rounds of your better gambler george. Thirteen twelve went on and won the big east tournament. Colorado twenty two and eight got to the the final the pac twelve tournament oregon state beat them. Everything and i think that spreads seven and a half points. Something like that but georgetown's playing right at the right time. Be careful if you're if you're picking colorado. I'd be careful. Can you look up. The point. Spread between iowa and grand canyon. Oh it's gotta be twenty five or something it's going to be double digits. I'm just curious. And i might actually take grand canyon to cover. That's about tell you. What texas tech. When they lose to stay. Shut your mouth. Your filthy yes. They're not losing the do utah.

"Defense. When all is said and done well. I i would. I would say that Are this is why we're here is why we went this past weekend. This is if you look at the teams that we've played this year token i eyeball another team in your In your mind you can see how you would match up with that team. You know there's drinks how race matchup with your weaknesses and vice versa. We're we're we're they hurt you. Where do you hurt them. And the pain that keeps us the most games maximum. We don't shoot well is Is we don't let you score but you know it's like being in a fight song was always going to be. There's always gonna be that one guy out there that you haven't seen him yet. That's i can put your place and there's and there's always that team in these tournaments that's why no matter how good the team is. They can lose right. Nobody knows that better than the cougars over the years By the greatest team never to win a championship with five jama. He knows tape. About how great that team was that kind of shows you how the fragility of the nc double a. tournament. You know if a best of five best of seven series five jama probably would have won multiple championships. But it's only forty minutes to twenty minutes has- to see who can score more points than forty minutes and the best thing that always win those games and that's why that's why you just prepare your team the best you can Make sure they have the right mindset. Make sure they have all of the amunition they need so be successful and then sit back and hopefully we put this in the basket border and the other team. I'll let you go of this. I've got about thirty seconds. Do you have any pre pregame routines are why are you just as nervous now as you first start or nerves. Not a problem for you. Know i get nervous I would be less than not as if i said i get excited. You know I i don't know how many have been in sixteen seventeen maybe But i get. The same. feeling is a tremendous accomplishment. But i'm so proud of my guys. I've just just kinda my team. I'm happy for them. We walk run and locker room friday night and you know Bright lights are on us. And we're playing against a terrific team We can go play basketball with all this with everything that's happened in the last year we still get to play and we're so fortunate and blessed and so thankful that we get to do that. Mc and heavy t heavy. First time you've been able to hear him in an interview right locally correct. Yeah yeah really good. It's getting the vast. yeah he's classic and the one thing about not a lot. There's not a lot of hyperbole and i know it comes off as coach. Speak to some. But when he says we're enjoying the moment. I assure you coaches i've talked to and he'd been one of them. Frank martin bob huggins guys that. I've known for a long time throughout the years. Coaching in any sport to us. Well come on their to to verse fifteen. Well we've seen it before. He will not take this team anymore lightly coaching them. Then he would if they were getting ready to play baylor or gonzaga he will be the same way different game philosophy because of the lineup but coach in the same way and and i love it because i always think okay. Da show the trophy. Say this all what. He laughed. Dot here he's not mets. Trae celebrate doing their practice celebration negative. He is sincerely that this is. And i try to tell. But i've said it on here before we say during football. It's if you want to know how hard it is to win. At the rockets they got beat again last night. I don't mean that as a dig to them. They got beat in last night to the hawks. One here one. Eighteen one zero seven hard to win. And i i didn't you don't want to think about tommy anchor. He was at michigan. He's at harvard. And for tommy amateurs never been to the tournament. He said yeah they did. Did he have been one time or at michigan. He was never in the tournament but is amazing. How hard it is to get with sixty eight talk like it should be easy but it isn't what shock has been talking to him earlier he'd been. Ut for what six years. Whatever is only the second time he's gone. I think the and six years there. Yeah so it is. It's not and then once you're there. It's hard to win any so right and i've said this to it's not always the best team in march the winds. You know what it is. The hottest downright it is like the baseball postseason right. You get rolling and own. my gosh. It is anchored into the tournament. More than one time would would it michigan. Did he make it no. You didn't make it. that's that's what. he said. His force michigan it michigan. He did not make the table which ended up getting him fired right. Yeah that's what coach sampson was talking about. But i'm a huge fan of his. He cares about kids. Met him and i have had conversations off the constantly. I come home. It was kind of a mentor. some of the things. He's told me encourage me to do by. Shut this shocker. Smarts third tournament appearance in one. Two three four five six years hard to do. It's amazing to me to do like that. I mean that's school. you think texas. They should be in the tournament every single year. I'm i'm a huge fan of coach sampson. And we'll be pulling for him on friday night and cleveland state dist- you can't take these types of team for grant because they got the as a fifteen seed. Nobody expects him to move on so they're going to end. They're going to create mismatch. Hit by problems for you as he said. And it's tough with them when they plan that small ball and coach sampson will have them ready to go. And like you said nerves still the same as it was his first tournament which was sixteen or seventeen of ago. Then a hell of a run. This is a special team. And he's a special coach. "You're making two million as the backup and your saw backup. You're underpaid as kind of like a almost like a you know. A veteran doesn't play a lot. Nba player like pj. Tucker's making seven million dollars and he felt feels underpaid like those kind of players. Now get ten so we got a view. The backup quarterback as that now to right like well. They're so valuable. Listen they make them. Yeah and you're like. Oh my gosh we if we just had when you find fits your like oh and then he comes in in places like so grateful to have a guy like that right and the differences. Look what bridgewater did is a solid backup for breeze. What was he five. Nil got jade fifteen one. Five five zero five. And one. By the way bruce set just ended up leaving. Come into. that's right. is there back. He's making sixteen million bucks so backup. Yeah it's not a bad gig to come in as a starter. Be a baggy like okay. Bridgewater five hundred when he was the right so and without bridgewater they come in there and go to and five. It's completely different than where they are. So a game or two makes a world of difference for those guys and there's not a lot of great ones at that position that can accept it but also be prepared to start if you have to be unique cat in respect to say that i lived it to be able to be able to start without reps and then support the starter and then go fourteen weeks without starting and when you do it maybe i call. Just don't speak on on my on. What happened to me from personal experience. I was aaron worn. And i were there and and warren was banged up. And we're going to last. We needed to win myself. Warren moon and brad. Johnson were there and we needed to win. A game in san francisco came to town and warned. Couldn't quite go. They started me that day and we had to wind. You make the playoffs when we did. And so you know to take care of our business and took to keep moving on a regular season game and the only reason i say not arrogant but had i not been prepared. What would have been somebody who wasn't ready for it. You lose that game. Guess what you lose the next level. Yeah so those things were and it comes on with everybody guys that far better than i am at the we've seen over the course of time but you don't want to be. That team is in a perfect position. And then all of a sudden because you're backup quarterback isn't prepared already doesn't understand the roller how to do it. The or other such a drop off that. You don't have much chance to win local. We'll take a look what happened with connor cook came car. Went out. young member asked bad but they're facing a bad quarterback and they still get their ass kicked right and point is like even then and connor and saying he wasn't going to be a good player but that could have a veteran veteran. Yeah that's exactly right to make just five or six more throws so it. It does matter so we'll come back and discuss. The question is is tyrod taylor now. They've loaded it up in incentives where he's got an ability to make wound. That's not big time starter. Money but twelve million bucks per good So i don't know what the message in it is other than this is a security blanket that most teams should have and many. "My hair's read though. I think accounts enough. I'll let that pass. I have a small head of green shirt. Well there you go. At least one of us did it. I didn't even plan. This was almost late today again. Because i was looking at the dish on news last night. I wonder if the astro today by the way one of those teams that with all green jerseys. I think those kind of cool the specialty. yeah usually wear misprint. Earning at least green hats or something. I'd imagine the is worth something. Today's green most even do i guess we'll find out we will find out later day five. Oh five or spinach What we do know. Is that the texans. Continue to add stories left and right and we were talking tyrod taylor earlier earlier. You miss that as well as part of the story yesterday the quarterback position in houston his kind of influx. At the moment. i still don't know what to make of the tyrod taylor thing outside of wanting to have a look the texans know that there's maybe they did they catch wind of this happening. This potential lawsuit with shawn watson and knowing that if this does drag out that there's a possibility that he like even if they are planning on. Hey we're going to keep this guy. He's not going to play for us at some point next season. We need to have that kind. A backup in tyrod taylor. I don't know do you think. Part of it was the fact that last week david kelly sue said. We have no contingency plan because he got ripped apart for that. I don't think david kelly had a clue. I think david. Kelly is clearly consulted on some players. Maybe because he's got a lot of baltimore ties with some of these players. But i don't think they've had clue at the time what they were going to do. I mean if i'm being honest there were two players that were tied to him. One being tyrod taylor the other being Robert griffin the third. I'd much rather take tyrod taylor. Of course you're taking tyrod taylor all day. Nothing against g. three by the one rookie. Here you had was a great year but unfortunately injuries caught up. Yeah for this football team next year. It doesn't matter. Tyrod taylor playing like they're going to lose no matter what and tyrod taylor could be the starter for five games. They're going to lose much. Probably will have to sean. Maybe probably more. i mean realistically. They would lose more to shana. Win them a few games. He's playing that. They shouldn't have won. They had a bunch of those. They were really close on possibly winning last year when he was playing. So i mean a couple things happen here there. You'll be able to find a victory where you weren't expecting them to have it now. I just. I don't know that. I can sit there and read a lot into tyrod signing and thinking. Oh this means ice said yesterday like oh. They're not trading to sean. I think it could mean that. I think it's currently employed. 'cause you don't go sign now. I think we get caught up on it too. We get caught up on backup money back up. Money for quarterbacks in the league is getting dumb like six million bucks if he's just backup. Isn't that crazy. People saw nick foles super bowl. Run their said. We need to have a quality backup. Yeah mean you go pull up. As i'll do this talking right here like the the highest paid quarterback there's going to be if marcus mariota does not leave. The las vegas raiders. This year. he is going to be like one of the highest payed backups. Yeah he's making like ten million dollars a year or this year to be a backup quarterback. There's plenty of backups. That are making really good money. Now i'm going down the list here and i mean hell. We watched jacoby perset. The last couple of years in in indianapolis be the backup nikolic. Sixteen million bucks. A year are sworn i saw yesterday. He assigned somewhere to he. Did with miami. That's what it was was back up. Not bad not bad at all looking at the good lord to deter to top backup quarterbacks in the nfl. Right now. I mean jacoby percents one. Marcus mariota's chase. Daniel has always been really reliable You gotta figure. If alex smith signed somewhere he's going to be very reliable backup Tyrod potentially a backup i mean. We'll see jameis. Winston also jameis winston. Same kind of deal there. Yeah yeah one of those two is going to be the backup. They're very reliable. I mean the age of the reliable backup is here. it gets you paid. Yeah i mean back in the day. Nobody knew who any of these backup. Quarterbacks war correct now everybody has a good idea of who their backs. Okay have been going on the list now and marcus mariota yet. Ten point seven million dollars. He's the sixteenth highest well. He's actually the fifteenth because drew brees retired fifteen. Hi it's highest paid quarterback in a lake interesting and he's a backup. I mean another successful backup story. Look at job matching. Mike vicks backup pace case. Keenum's megan seven million dollars a year to be the backup in cleveland. Right now. nick foles naked. Another successful seven million bucks ryan fitzpatrick another successful backup. Backup quarterback is here. It's not that wild to have a quarterback being your backup them make six million dollars. It's just not like we're getting to the point where that is going to be. Probably the low end at some point like right now. The loans like three or four million dollars which i think they are paying in that range for aj mccarron and only go up and up and up. The interesting part of this is why. Would you commit this to this quarterback. That might not play when the texans now look. They're doing a lot of maneuvering they are. Cash strapped cap strapped with cash for cash. Like they've they've had in. It's likely that another dumping of somebody is coming in terms of news because they've made all these moves and they need to still probably cut the money because today when the league year starts you have to be under the cap. That's that's a rule. Are there some sort of penalty. I guess they were attempting to go after. Marvin jones the texans texans and another team attempting to go after them. It's that would have been an okay. Move yeah i just kind of like but i from tyrod standpoint with the money it would have been easier for them to just go and keep aj mccarron and paying less. Because he's worth less. I think the front office thinking we look. we know. We're going to be bad but we want to at least be somewhat competitive. You're not going to be competitive with. Aj mccarron tyrod. Taylor will give you a chance. Mccarron won't do it. You gotta remember tyrod. Taylor took that bills team to their first playoffs. For the first time in twenty years that is true and he's he's a very serviceable player. So that's why. I'm wondering about all the layers of this. You know with how much you pay. And maybe i'm reading too much into how much you're paying your backup quarterback. No i don't think so. I think you're just about run on. That i mean that's that's the only question i have is that are you paying is. Is you paying that much telling obviously with the incentives and every question. That thank you guys for doing that. Appreciated What's the average rate for backup quarterback in the league. Now we're looking at like the brought it up marcus. Mariota is the six fifteenth highest paid quarterback in the league right now in terms of cash or cap hit this year because he's making ten million dollars and there's a lot of guys that are making six seven million bucks now. That's what it is. It's crazy yeah. So i like i think it's kind of like If.

"Of tyrod taylor at a first round. Pick learning which has happened for him and a lot of places it also speaks to. If he's here. The texans wanna make sure they saw meaning to shawn watson that they fill up the position that they obviously hope tyrod taylor in higher regard. Aj mccarron there's that and then it's a security blanket injury if sean gets traded or doesn't show up if covered yourself which leads us to this and then you know depending on what goes on the field now with this self hopefully would've whoever i just hope there's no victim either way. Does that make sense. But somehow some way there's going to be right either. It's true or not and if it's not true then people hopefully it'll go away and doesn't follow the sean around because that's not fair to him. If it is true than the victim has been through some suffering and dishonor have to answer for it right but late on whether is i just. Don't do it guys people out there will when it comes to off the field stuff. I will not until answers and it solidified will not guess on something. This is to me. I take this very serious. Don't you once set when that assault is involved. I don't it's not just. Hey yeah well. She's lying or he's lying. I'd i don't i give both ins respect until they've proven otherwise i just yeah i just do. That's that's just me. You can approach now. You want if you want somebody else. It's just gonna speculate and throw stuff against the wall. It's not gonna happen here won't live with me so it leaves me to the. There's a lotta different arms to this question. I mean how how you gonna approach so with tyrod. Taylor here does tyrod taylor. Starting zero games for the texans and twenty twenty one. Does he started game. Does he start three games for. Did they start five games. plus the starts five games. Plus that'll tell you two things. Well sean suspended or hurt. Yeah or the shots not here and we've got a rookie that we're excited about. And if he hasn't started by game five the rookie. Guest that beats. He's the texans. Were winning yeah. Okay so you gotta take everything into account because the shawn's gone. They're going to have a first round quarterback here the be surprising that they did. You don't go pick up. Tyrod taylor to be your starter for an entire season. Gives you flexibility val. So there it is zero games for tyrod taylor and twenty twenty one one game three games. Five games plus you can take into account everything you want to make this vote. What do you guys think. I mean from those options advocate. I would probably have to take three just to be safe because again. I'm sitting here today. If the accusations are a thing in this thing drags out. I think that it makes it. More likely to shawn. Watson doesn't get traded right now that's just me so i would bet on fewer games for tyrod taylor be on a few. Because even if he is here and they were true there could be a suspension. They aren't true and he's here. You know maybe he sits on the whole thing's a mess. It's it's it is incredible. We'd had we'd had a run where there wasn't a bunch of mess type stories now we're back to a different layer of the mess. But i think that you have to bet on at least a few right now from tyrod taylor rookie to he's going to. You would imagine that. He starts the rookie for a minute. Yeah depending on the rookie. How bad or good this team is. If you're four one with tyrod taylor. He'll play until there till he gets her because he always gets hurt too. So he's not a big chance taker. He is a perfect protected. Not a big risk. The reward is just keep it close right. Stay that that's that's tyrod game and that's fine. He's a well respected player in this league and person right heavy t what about you. I also agree with three. I feel that the only way he doesn't start any is if either is here or if they indeed draft a quarterback and this quarterback is the next coming of joe montana. There's just has to start at least three. Even in cleveland. He started three even la. He was going to start at least the first game until you know. The doctor stabbed him in the long. I gotta say at least three. I would normally be the guy who said. I love to shop durability zero because i ate trade and the guy plays and then there's the part of me that says if you draft a guy if you trade with the jets and had the second pick. Why wouldn't you start. Zack wilson from day. One and let him learn. Then you say well as ready say well the for me. I i don't. This is hard. Because i i the the emotional part of me says screw. It does sean. He's going to be here. I said five plus in twenty twenty one. I wouldn't say you're crazy for pit thinking then. And i could still see this scenario again where he plays tyrod taylor place. Five plus into shawn watson still here because he suspended again if the accusations are a real thing. Remember this. if to shawn's not here you may also not want it if you start out. You're kind of an average team and i don't. I'm not gonna accuse anybody at tank and it happens in sports but if you felt the rookie gave you the best chance to win. Six games into the season. Would you play him or would you say we'd like a higher draft. Pick to build more around him. I'm really twenty twenty. Two should play him if he's ready to play. But you're right from the standpoint of there may be pressure to not are smart enough for that eleven or two and fourteen. I'd rather be two and fourteen. Who was in the same a couple years ago. The browns drafted baker mayfield number. One and tyrod taylor started the first. I think three games until he got hurt. Yeah i'm gonna say just for the fun of it i'm gonna. I hope i'm one hundred percent wrong but just to be different. Because it's your your guys pick. Is this safe. I mean you're in twitter Yeah he should be five plus draft quarterback. They don't think he's ready. And if you can't get up to number two you trade with the number eighteen which is carolina and you trae lance. Well he will be less ready to play. Yeah anti rod can. I'm just throwing stuff again. This is don stuff against the wall and shawn's playing quarterback somewhere else. Which if you got tyrod. Taylor do you wanna trade with the forty niners and jimmy garoppolo. Do want both those guys on the same team. Oh you're not trade for quarterback. Now i wouldn't think about an anon- draft is writers are not in the draft. Yeah i mean there's no point in getting a guy that's under contract for a bunch of baller you trade and when you got this guy that's that's okay money right for a year and you could just draft korea trade with the forty niners. Say i don't want jimmy. Do whatever you want with him you trade him somewhere else right. I don't know but this tyrod taylor doesn't limit the texans now on where they'd go mean you think i think it i mean to me. It's clear where they'd go. It'd be fighter jets. pick right. yeah the jets are the most the.

"Hell. I'm not even sure where you start on a morning like this. You think things are going okay who we gotta get free agency while they're busy still. Yeah i mean rather be busier. Yeah we a give. Are they gonna add to nick. Caserio continues to do work and know jackie's to be is not the one defining personnel and these decisions. He may be approving some of them. But he ain't the one doing the scouting on my assure. That nicosia's impact is being felt that we start here. Two things is to shawn watson more likely to be traded because they got a twelve million dollar with incentives about a six million dollar base. Tyrod taylor who's the steve berg of this era. You bring him in your draft first round picks. He's a good player. You can start 'em if you need to you draft a first rounder. And then he gets replaced whether it's baltimore and joe flacco whether it's buffalo and josh allen whether it sandiego slash l. a. in justin herbert. Whether it's i mean everywhere he goes they just replace them with another guy was he in cleveland. He wasn't cleveland baker mayfield. He's that guy now. I know a guy who coached him in the nfl. Who says and. I've heard this from multiple sources. Pro prepared underrated great team player and the players love him and i also know this about him. He's not a big chance taker. He'll do everything can't protect the football. He's basically what you want a guy back and quarterback class and a guy go going if he has to start that he's not gonna take a lot of risk which means there's not going to be that old high end reward but it will protect the football he'll be prepared good football high q. For high football. Iq and he'll play any. He's just a pro. he's not going to. He's not going to disrupt much just always seemed to be in the place whether it's an injury or a first round pick where he's that guy that everybody wants on their roster because you know what you're going to get from him which is a good thing and the first thing people are going to talk about is all will does that mean to shawn's gone. I don't know if it means he's gone. But i can tell you this. It makes it makes it easier for security blanket. Then you would have expected if you were talking about it and if you tyrod taylor can hold this down for a year while this team goes through struggles. I assure you that they have every intention to do it in. La last year. Unfortunately he might have to show. Watson is here right and then the other part of this. Which is i. don't speculate on stuff like this. I wait till i hear before. I know what the true answers but does shawn watson has now been. I guess. Accused of sexual assault is being represented. By an attorney is the female. I don't know who she is. I don't know win another detail about the details. It's a high it's a. It's a big time attorney in town..

"That. They're not traditional lineup. Less they've got a five-man and they've got a one and they've got a point guard then everything in between say five basketball players and those are the hardest matchups that means that are for man which is justin gorham fabian white. He's gonna art and clinton bribes or or Remind mark they're gonna be darned another bart right how they do a great job of spacing you Planning space they have good schemes. They know they know how to how they wanna get their baskets And they're and their policy you know they're they're very college Their enthusiasm on the bench. the little traditions that dennis has started with his team. I i'd say 'cause you can you can tell his enthusiasm and his energy is has taken over that program cleveland state so lucky to have him these jobs. These jobs regardless of who's coaching them as they had focal diets will drive the identity Whatever it is they can handle. They hang their hat on their. I think their emotion enthusiasm. How are they play. And they're not an easy team to play gets pulled up watch their game against ohio state. They lost sixty seven. Sixty one. six point game And when you when you take the middle thirty minutes of that game take out the last five. I five no difference in ohio state because all how states frontline had a hard time matching that cleveland. Mistakes guards right. And they're so athletic. That the rebound become a factor so better hands Full worked out for us. The time The only teams left for the good teams. So it's not like you're going to be playing a bad team. Whoever you're playing this thing is good. The bad teams aren't here. And that the truth a couple more minutes. We'll get out of here and get him on his way coach sampson kelvin sampson head. Coach university of houston cougars coach. If you roll through cleveland state coach. And let's just say for my saying. I'm saying if we get to the championship and you win this thing. What will we be saying about your defense. When all is said and done well. I i would. I would say that Are dita's is why we're here is why we went this past weekend is if you look at the teams that we've played this year. Yo can eyeball another team in your in your mind. You can see how you would match up with that team. You know their strengths Rains matchup with your weaknesses and vice versa. We're we're we're gonna hurt you. And where do you hurt them. And the thing that keeps us in most games on nights when we don't shoot well is Is we don't let you score but you know it's like being in a fight song was always going to be. There's always gonna be one guy out there that Seen him yet. That's that can put you in your place. And there's always that team in these tournaments. That's why that's why no matter how good the team is. They can loose right. Nobody knows that better than the cougars over the years By the greatest team never to win a championship was jammer. He knows about how great that team is. Is that kinda shows you how the the fragility of the nc double a. tournament. You know if there was a best of five to seven series. Five jam probably would have won multiple championships. But it's only forty minutes to twenty minute has to see who can score more points than forty minutes and the best thing that always win those games. And that's why that's why you just prepare your team the best you can Make sure they have the right mindset. Make sure they have all the ammunition they need to be successful and then sit back. And hopefully we put the Biscuit in the basket more than the other team. I'll let you go. This got about thirty seconds. Do you have any pre pre game routines are while you just as nervous. Now's your first start nerves not a problem for you know i get nervous. I would be less than honest. If i said i get excited. You know I i don't know how many of these have been in sixteen seventeen. Maybe but i still get the same feeling. It's a is a tremendous accomplishment. And i'm so proud of my guys right. I'm just just so proud of my team. I'm happy for them. We walk run out of that locker room friday night and you know Bright lights are on this. And we're playing against a terrific team We get to go play basketball with all this with everything happened. In the last year we still get to play and we're so fortunate and blessed and so thankful that we get to do that. I don't live side of that either special team special coach going to be a special moment. Fridays we start and we'll be watching coach a love you. I'm proud of you and couldn't be happier for you. And now i know it's this is a grind and you stay on it and we'll be watching and pull employees my man and i hope it turns out the way you want it. Okay sean i appreciate it and face heavy goku. "Kids watching that growth individually and as a team You you fall down you lose a game when a bunch of games so for the coach it's all about the players and some a little bit guilty feelings when people try to make it about is you know it's Attended at the end of the day. And what we do shine was Especially in college colleges is to me is about these guys experienced You know putting grimes transfers from kansas houston kid has has a tremendous year Watch him grow Not just as a player but as a person dejean giral But he's been through his three years here and justin dorm. You know these kids have such great stories so for me. It's every everything is about them and everything else. Stay far far. Backseat head coach. Kelvin sampson of the university of houston cougars to seed joins us here on sports. Talk seven coach. And you and i had talked of various times throughout. But what you know. It's been a long time. I mean we're talking. You know a longtime between nc two a. tournaments because cova d-. What was your message to your program when you knew that you weren't playing in a tournament and we were going to. How how do you keep them. Involved what would you say to your team. I think i'd say it's like breaking new ground. You know it's We were on a bus We left Guy lewis Development center on our university of houston campus. That morning may twelfth. I'm starting march twelve. Which would have been on a thursday because we were gonna play on friday night before. I was on the phone with the commissioner of our conference in our socio commissioner going through different scenarios So i knew that when the thing here with rudy gobert with the jazz tested positive for covid. We didn't know what that was at the time. We we didn't have tokens from the swine. Flu from h one n whatever was just didn't know But when they shut down the nba. That's when you realize that you know we're we're all vulnerable here is thinks this thing is serious But we're an hour and a half away from fort worth when the final word came on my phone said that The initial call didn't cancel. The ncaa tournament just cancelled the conference tournament. And so we just turned around and headed back to houston matter of fact we stopped. We pulled into the focused bookies subject but from that point forward every day was Was a new experience for all of us. What do we do. What did we do. The players are season. You know by the time by the time we got back to houston. Everything had shut down never conference. We went from the conference tournament to the ncw tournament to the season is now over He'll guys that potentially thinking of putting her name in the draft. While i was going to happen to that Recruiting we were still involved with the kids Everything was up in the air. We we didn't know So we had to quickly find a way to communicate. That was a thursday so friday friday. I had the entire team up in our film room. So that would have been the last time we would have been together because it was Within the next month and they decided to keep his name to draft We learned is so virtual meat and all that stuff and It was it was It was an interesting time. I it's know it's sometimes the crisis through so Things that happened like this pandemic if it forces you to force us to get better for she grow up without ever. Losing sight of bus was less important with this This virus and and the more people made light of it. The matter i got i got. I just got irate. The people are dying. People are losing jobs business. shutting down. the the you've got people right here like there's this is not real just couldn't understand that head coach kelvin sampson university of houston cougars. Their play on friday at assembly hall against cleveland state coach. I know on a twenty four and three team. It's tough to find that moment but coaches can usually good ones like yourself whether it's watching taper seeing it where you say okay. These guys are good. When did you know during the season. Was it getting them ready. When did you know that this was a special team. I'm not sure. Did i ever Would i. i'm not sure that i would ever come to grips grips with that for grass. That personally. I'm because to. I think to admit to yourself that you have a special team. You're saying that you're on top of the mountain right. Whereas i in the basketball team always finding the mountain. You know no matter what you're finding amount and it didn't matter to me whether you know. Nineteen seventy six. Was the last time college. Basketball team went undefeated. So when you lose a game. If you're coach you you never overreact to it whereas if you've never coached like you've been in the arenas sharon i mean you've been in the radio. The highest highest levels in college and pro pro sports. So you understand what losing meets where people never competed. They don't they. Don't want a loss meets so i've learned to never overreact to lose it. Don't overanalyze it. Usually prior to during or after you come to grips with wise and then you try to set a path to correct. It takes to make your team better. I i get wrapped up all coaches. I'm certainly not special unique to anything. But i think most the coaches will look at winning and losing In some veins the same way you know. How do we continue to get better and if you if you happen to slip back okay. How did we get back back on. Why did why. Why did we lose this game. And how do we Face it won't happen again knowing that if you play thirty games finally going to be three or four nights that you're out of your mind better than you actually are. You got three or four nights. Were you're out of character and you just had bad nights and on those nights she can lose and that's The key is making sure that those are infrequent and your kids are on a path. Were getting better Or at least they think they're getting better every day and you're and you're presenting bat and tune with them Every day and if you've got kids and that matters that matters when you're together like this over a period of time where they've completely bought into something bigger than themselves and that's the team you know gers the name on our jersey says houston we are at the university of houston And we're proud to represent our city. Our university None of our names associated with that. That's the way we approach this. So we lose we lose together when we win s a collaborative collective effort And that's the great thing about being sports is it. Is you're competing to win. But you're also Competing.

"And your thoughts on Arkansas in general because the AD now at Arkansas was the eighty that hired Kelvin Sampson to Houston. My opinions this I'm not sold that that Kelvin Sampson is leaving Houston for console. It can happen. But I don't think that that is as much of a sure thing as if you're a type of person that follows the coaching carousel like as the stuff at breaking your kind of a college hoops junkie. I think it's definitely on the table. But I'm at this stage. I'm not totally convinced that Samson's Lieven h down for Arkansas. The only thing that Arkansas can do to convince him is just make incredible amounts of money. Just put incredible amounts of money on the table. These SEC's schools have so much money. Now, if they wanna pay a basketball coach five million dollars a year, they can remember a few years ago, Alabama like put an open check on the table for Gregg Marshall, and we're willing to pay him whatever they needed to pay him. He just didn't want to go coach there, but it wasn't a money deal. So Arkansas can put real difference making money in front of Kelvin and maybe get him to jump, but what he has to figure out and this is reasonable minds can disagree on this. But what he has to figure out is do you wanna go be at a middle of the pack job in a power five league. Or do you wanna have one of the better jobs in a top seven leak? You know, you you you he's already shown and by the way, I think he'd win it, Arkansas. The guys wanna everywhere he's been his career is really amazing. He was obviously. You know, I it starts at Montana tech. And he went back to back league titles there then goes to Washington state alternately gets them to an inside of light tournament bounces to Oklahoma goes to one two three four five six seven eight nine straight in CWA tournaments, including a final four, then he eventually bounces to Indiana. And you know, he had Indiana twenty two and four overall eleven to in the big ten when he got fired for the NCAA violation stuff. But if he were allowed to keep that job he would have been rocking and rolling at that job for a while again. I mean, he had Eric quickly came in recruited got Eric, Gordon. And then he's got him off to an amazing start. They were ranked fifteenth in the country at the time when he got fired than Dan dockage took it over and went three and four in the final seven games as interim coach just drove it straight into the ground, but Kelvin Sampson handed him a great team. And there's no reason to think that team that program wouldn't continue to operate at high level had he stayed there. And then he takes the Houston job. I years tough transition year. But in your to goes wins. Twenty two games goes the your three wins. Twenty one games goes the IT last year twenty seven wins advances in the instability tournament. And now he's sitting here at thirty three wins in the Sweet Sixteen. He would win anywhere best I can tell so he's got figure out. Do I want to just keep what I've got going at Houston or do you want to try to rebuild something in a league that is now stacked with quality basketball coaches in a league that has now stacked with quality recruiters. And I don't know that there's a clear answer to that question. Agree with all of most of if not all of that keep an eye on what Kelvin Sampson says in the next couple of days here. We'll we'll local media Tim and questioned on this. Or will he be asked about it at media saleability ability on Thursday in Kansas City because Houston plays Friday night. It's actually the last tip of the Sweet Sixteen this just adds another element to all of that with miles being gone, Arkansas for just a minute. Okay. Mic. Andersen. Obviously, the reason this jobs open. He gets fired after eight years he had been in two of the past three Sita tournaments three of the past five in advanced in two of them on a surface level. That's pretty good. But he's never been to a Sweet Sixteen..

"Nine PM eastern. We are joined by Kelvin Sampson. Kelvin so good to have you back. How are you today? Jim. It's always a good beyond with you. That means that we must be doing good. Actually, you're doing really well. So take me back to Sunday night and told us the clock is winding down in your win over Ohio State, the cougar fans were chanting Sweet Sixteen Sweet Sixteen what did it mean Calvin for you to hear that? You know, it's such a surreal. Moment. But the the thing I was thinking about most right right behind our bench was my wife. Karen, my daughter, Lauren. My daughter-in-law Tanya and my granddaughter maisy in. I just thought about how good this made themselves. Yeah, we do everything here as a family. My son says right beside me on the bench. My starting back court from the two thousand and two final four team how price and corners white or sitting there as assistant coaches. You know, I've got I've got so many special people. That play significant roles on this program. But you know, you want to share those experiences with your family. My mother and father passed away in two thousand fourteen and they were they went to every NC double A tournament game that I ever coached and I thought about them too. But you know, an experience like that doesn't happen. Very often. I just heard you referenced thirty five years for this call, but it's you, you know, you're proud of your players. You're happy for them you happy for their families. That's the circle, you know, your your family. Your players are players families, you go through the recruiting process. Kevin to believe in something and play for something bigger than themselves. Then all of a sudden they accomplish it. It's just a proud moment. I every coach that goes through it. I'm sure feels appreciative and wanna thank all the people that helped them get their Kelvin Sampson, my gas Kelvin online at all surprised to hear you answer that question that way because you, and I've talked in the past you are the son of a hall of fame high school coach in North Carolina. And whenever you talk about your team and your staff and your players the word family continues to come up. You're not looking to build a program you looking to build a family, and you made it clear that you were looking at Houston not for great scores. But you were looking for great teammates. Because before you can have a great team. You've got to have great teammates. So when you're waiting players, what is it? The let you know whether or not somebody's going to be a good teammate. You try to get to their games early. I'll watch how they warm up how they react to their teammates. Are they givers know, we've created a society of entitlement with with this culture that since some of these programs and a you're not all member tremendous the kid, I have my point guard gala Robinson. I played for a program. Here called Texas pro coach by Marlin low. And that was he ran has you program a lot like a college program are really good high school program that a hill kills accountable. And so I it was an easy evaluation for me with Gaylon. Are you could see how he he was a leader? The first time I saw him a lot of times, we got you go out recruiting you. You know, you've got to find a kid be your captain one day. I don't think you can develop a captain. I don't think you can designate someone as a captain, I think you have to recruit recruit that and that is that is an intangible somebody that is worried about his teammates had pneumonia, but getting them going kid misses a shot because our high FIS the Mattel's mess. Okay. We'll get it back. There's next whatever it may be. But Gaylon had that you know, he he had that captain quality about him. And I can go down the list of every kid in our program. You can tell her for kids they care about winning Morton, they do statistics. And when you get those kids together getting them to play for each other is not hard because they they all want to win. They all water when the right way Kelvin Sampson joining us now for those who do not know went to high school in Houston. He was recruited by other programs, but he signed with you. He said he believed in you. We believe in your vision, you you've had Kelvin so much success over the course of your career you've been dissuade sixteens you've been to the final. Four, but how much does it mean to be able to share that moment with players who have never experienced it? What a great point, Jim. And that's what it's all about. I know it's not about you coach you get talked about a lot and um in different ways. But at end of the day, that's not why you get into coaching. You mentioned Montana tech. I I had no idea. About this level or getting paid or or been on radio shows with Jim Rome. I that that was the furthest thing from my mind. I I wanted to coach I wanted to see you guys improve. I wanted to give him something if we could make a good team and get them to play the right way. Then go see him have success. And then Danish got older you realize the relationships you're building. With those kids is what really makes us special them grow from. I've been your players to be in your friends. You know, I had some kids that play from me at Oklahoma drive from Norman in Oklahoma City. The Tulsa just to see our team play in talking with them after the game texting. But some on the way back on the on the way to the plane. Those are the moments that that silent moments moments that don't get talked about as what is what makes coaches proud. What what gives us substances the difference? You could make it a young man's life. Kelvin Sampson is head coach the Houston Cougars there onto the Sweet Sixteen. Kevin. I want to mention Montana tech more time, and I've talked about that in the past and your roots there. But now you're in a spot where from the outside you appear to be having the time of your life. When you look back on the days of driving that van players ankles. And now when you look at where you are right now, what do you think and how special is that? Joe Castiglione athletic director at Oklahoma for about nine years. And I I got the job at Houston. Jim. He's he's hit me a painter's ladder. I mean at nine foot ladder came in the mail for goodness sake. Let me tell you have a package outside. I thought it was a box. I said we'll go ahead and bring it in. No, we we. We you need to tell us where to put it. That's what I said for goodness sake. What is it? But he said that ladder as a symbol of every step on that ladder. Somebody is going to help you get to where you wanna go. And when we won the conference championship this year, we use that letter to cut down the nets touched each step because I thought about my sacrifices. My family's made our academic people are support services staff our players families because don't custodians in the gym to people to clean our offices, the managers. Everybody has a contribution that they make to have you been successful. And that's what Montana tech was for me. It was a start. You know, I think my first hour was about sixteen thousand dollars. And I thought I was the richest guy in the world. I had a second job as I cleaned apartments. Cleaned apartments when they were being vacated to get them ready for the next ten the move in. So they let me stay rent free. So you think about all the things you do when you get started and the sacrifices your family makes to allow you to chase your dreams when you get to a certain point, you automatically hit the rewind button to go back to that point. Because the one thing I tried to teach our kids Jim is don't ever ever forget where you come from. You're gonna make mistakes. Nobody's perfect things. Not always gonna go your way. But, but if you always have a reference point and your reference point is how you got started. And. Go back to that point often it'll Boji well as you go forward talking to Houston Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson. Kevin. I want to say one more thing to the program. One thirteen games back in two thousand fifteen you to the Sweet Sixteen I did out buzz Williams on the show earlier this hour. He wanted to make sure that I said Hello to you from him. And congratulations to you from him. He's doing something very similar to you. But I want to make sure that I made that point for you. I'm watching your team and every team you've coached has played every possession like it was their last possession. But it seems like you Houston teams approach offense a little bit differently. Maybe than some of your teams in the past. How much of that comes from the time that you spent in the NBA all the gym all of it. I I wish every college coach could take a sabbatical step back for a year. Just be an observer. Just sit in the film rooms go to practices watch film on the other NBA teams. I love scouting Harry stops from Portland. Rick. Rick Al from Dallas, stamping Gundy. When he was at Orlando and go down the list, I learned so much just preparing our team for our next opponent in understanding not just spacing, but how to maintain spacing how to space and transition out to. Play pick and roll basketball with the corner spilled and lifts says a slot. I didn't know about a lot of that stuff. I knew a spacing was, but I didn't understand it. Well enough to maintain it we won. But we were winning with our defense and making sure our best player got most of the shots. But now if you look at our team play, we are we we shoot the ball early in the shot clock is there are we give our guards a lot of freedom to go make plays for themselves. And now there's an there's a lot of fun to coach that way. And there's a lot of fun to watch too. Yes. It is a lot of fun to watch. All right. Coming facing Kentucky next. Now the great opportunity for you in the program. What is the biggest thing that jumps out to you? As you watch film on Kentucky. I'm gonna say I'm gonna say this jam, and I made it would also at the thing that jumped out to me. Was how well disciplined they were at both ends cow. Does not get enough credit for being an outstanding coach he's coaching freshman freshman anymore. The thirty six games into their career qualifies them some years as juniors but this is a a well oiled defensive team. How hard it was to be Wofford without their best player. PJ washington. How good those kids had to play. I watched that entire game yesterday. Wofford plays heart. I mean, they run for office hard that hero Hagans quickly. Baker those kids were chasing them off those screens with great discipline too. Big for helping on the screens getting back to their man. The discipline today. Had was amazed. Have just really impressed with the job cows over this team. But definitely the best thing we played this year because of the balance front court and back court and their length. Now, we we don't have great length in our back court were six one six one six three six three six five six six six seven whatever they are. But those kids play hard disciplined, and they're big guys are really really talented, so Calvin finally, what is your message to your team as they get ready for this. Great challenge. What are you telling them right now? Keep that chip on your shoulder guys. You know, how would you know, how we practice? We play. Let's go be who we are. He's the head basketball coach at the university of Houston and onto the Sweet Sixteen again for the first time in thirty five years. He's a friend of the program, and you've got Houston and Kentucky on Friday night. Kelvin great to see you back in the Sweet Sixteen really nice to have you back on the show. Good luck on Friday night. We will all be watching. Well, if you talked to buzz again, telling my appreciate it is a great friend proud of him and proud of his program to and I appreciate you have may on Jeff you've got to come. And I appreciate you coming on. And I will pass a long time, I talked to buzz Kelvin Sampson. Great to have you back Kelvin. So we're trying to get as many of the Sweet Sixteen teams and coaches on this program as we can. And there are three good ones right there on the last day and a half Kelvin Sampson, buzz Williams, Mark few. And they're your interviews for today. We are open for our number three. So step up step right up..

"But how do you want when when people say Kelvin Sampson six hundred wind coach, what do you want people to say about you as a coach and about your programs? Well, I think the. You know, the people that know, you the best is the your players the people that don't know you are the ones that have the most opinions. So they're basing their opinion on what somebody else said. And what somebody else said is not always accurate, you know, that as well, as I do I think the the thing that I would want to be remembered for was that I always have my players sacks that I supported them that I that. I got my greatest I got my greatest satisfaction out of seeing their success. Just in them improve just working with them on a couple of things. It's see paint that thing and become better and then hearing from him getting wedding wedding invitations, tell them, but they had a new baby. I got a new house. I got a new job. I get those calls every day. I mean, I mean literally four or five times a week probably. When you coach so many different schools. You you have so many former players and hearing from dam is what I enjoy the most the wins and losses. You know? If you win your good coach if you lose let's go get another one. I get that. That's our that's our profession. You know, somebody if you're a bad guy therefore for your bag, I get that too. But I've always dedicated myself to my players helping them and that, and I think that's what I would want to be known for. I will tell you this. I again, I know your time is is crunched when we played against you guys. And I told you this when you were Indiana, we always a hated that match up zone because we could never seem to figure it out your team's screened better than any team. I've ever played never played against the team that's screened as well. I literally meet like body to body contact and and they just and they just competed. And that's where we didn't like you. But it was a rivalry to which we actually respected you guys because we felt like our team our players were better. And yet we could never wasn't we we could split like every every series. You swept us one year. We swept you on year. But it always felt like we we're like we have better players. Why don't we beat them more? But as because your team played so hard so cohesively, and I just I'm always fascinated by how that's built. Yeah. I think if you don't have great players, and you've got to find something to be great in you know, it's like cutting. That's something that like I was I spent thirty minutes just in practice on on on accelerating through your cuts, just like jump stop. And then the ball screens. There was just little things make such a big difference..

"Okay. I Iago was he could he guard different positions because it feels like he was like undersized. No neck, belong arms would be like a four five combo now almost like he might have been born before his time. Yeah. I I you know, he was just raw. I mean, he was. He was really really talented. But you know, he struggled a little bit too. Like remember as you said some assignments stuff, but just natural rob Doty. I mean, he he probably fits a little bit better right now. And today's game. I mean, dude is still getting it done planning them and ninety national team. And but he could step out and shoot it and guy had the biggest hands I've ever seen. I mean, I was the GM the next year after I got done playing and one of my favorite things to do is just rent pro stroz. 'cause I mean, I would throw the ball as hard as I could on a post entry pass just to watch him, you know, snag it with one hand, it was it was ridiculous. But you have spilled and super good kid. You know was just extremely agitated. You're growing up. His parents were I think both doctors, and you know, really really good kid and smart kid last thing wise, the Pac twelve so bad this year. I don't know. I just think you know, so many so many teams have lost. You know, guys. I mean, it you we talked to your brother last night, actually before the gaming, you know, you look around, and nobody has, you know, veteran players in wine, and I think that's why we had a little bit of success early last year. And she because we had God's and you just don't see that anymore. I mean look around the league. And there's there's nobody in the league that really has players that have been on roster for two three years. It's all guys that are either transfers, or you know, you know, there's some talent, you know, you feel obviously was Valerie do I about founding Washington. But I just think it's yeah. It's just the kind of a combination of guys being in and out coaches being in and out, and that's tough. I mean, it's it said never really seen it like this since I've been around it for you know, twenty plus years. My my my my we gotta run, but my hypothesis this one zone UCLA being down hurts the overall image. Ah league. But the the the teams that usually went on talent in the league, right? Cal the worst. They've been in a long time. Right. Cow massive down AirAsia had to kind of re re hit reboot in their whole program and UCLA firing their coach like those three teams as well. As USC in. Arizona state are always kind of up and down programs. But those those three are usually talent rich programs and two of them. You know, complete refresh jobs, and then UCLA just mish. Mosh where they fired and they don't have enough guards that sets the other part did good catching up. Appreciate you joining us. All All right. right. Thanks. Thanks. Now, let's talk with with Kelvin Sampson. Kelvin of course, just one is six hundred game as head coach at Oklahoma. And he's had a marvelous career, including leading Oklahoma to the Fatah four where they lost. Remember when when I wanna maintain cleaves sprained his ankle, right? The great hall is price was his point guard that was an incredible team. A we had seven battles. I think we played them seven times when I was at Oklahoma state. And I think we were foreign three against them. They swept us my junior year. He beat us my on senior night at at our place. He he I believe a terrific coach. Obviously the NCAA stuff has distracted people from how hard is teams play at how well was teams play. And then last year course, Houston missed free throws. Otherwise, they beat Michigan the second round the tournament. And Michigan doesn't go on to a national championship game. Let's welcome in the head coach of the Houston Cougars Kelvin Sampson coach like I know that everybody talks about your team now. And maybe a want to get into last year on and how incredible you guys played against Michigan..
