Chris Rodriguez Jr. Named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

"If you saw the game on saturday night between missouri and kentucky. You saw a lot of chris broderick against junior monster game. The co offensive player of the week in the sec and he joins us now from lexington. First of all chris congratulations. I know you're team. You wanna move ahead but man what a what a performance it was fun it a good one. Let's let's go back in and that was a huge game. Everyone knew how important it was for the cats to beat missouri Take us through the week of preparation. We head coach on thursday night. And it i'd say you guys were ready to play that that would be the understatement of the year sir so throughout the we just knew that we had abba chip on our shoulders because last year you know we felt we were prepared but our energy just wasn't there so we felt like we all wanna coaches told us like. Are you going to let them out play you. Are you going to let them out. Execute you and we knew we couldn't let that happen again so we went in with the mindset that we had to go in this game of wanna ask you about that because fans like like the folks that i talked to her every day we get. We get hung up on what happened last year and and and wonder often whether it carries over but coach stage said the exact same thing i mean. How do you eighty psychological here transfer. How do you transfer that bad feeling into you does it. Does it affect the way you practice. Prepare because you're you're supposed to be dealing with the techniques of it. I mean motion is part of football. But i'm really curious how that affects you as a player so one We had a video from last year where they showed beauvoir sidelines. I think kelvin. Joseph have made a good tap on the sideline and then they were getting Hype and they showed are sidelined. Dolphins was obvious on the bench or whatever and we were just sitting. There are cheering or nothing. You know he showed us that video in it. Obviously practice a lot harder throughout the week.

"The 2021 NFL season between the Cowboys and Bucks, we head to the Goodyear hotline with someone who is now so I see putting up videos. We're getting ready to go here at the stadium. Calvin Watkins, who covers the Dallas Cowboys for the Dallas Morning News, joins us on the Goodyear hotline here now and Calvin. I know you've been doing this since Chris Canty was down there in Dallas. Are you going to give up any good stories on my Guy here or what? No, it's all positive when it comes to Chris Candy all positive when I got the call that Chris Candies jumped up and said, Yes, sir. I will be available. That's right. Cabinet. Those stories you keep them stories between me and you. Yeah. Here. There we go. There we go Live. I live by the code on this one here, but Calvin and things that we can talk about here. I saw you post the video right now. Dak Prescott out in the field, warming up getting ready for the game tonight. Here. What's the sense about his status? Injury wise, top to bottom ankle to shoulder heading into Game one. Well, the ankle is supposedly fine and practices. We've seen them move, move around in the pocket, and he's running around. He looks Good. You know, they have drills with a quarterback got to scramble out of pocket. And he's doing that. Well as far as the shoulder girls. We've seen him throw 45 50 yards, Donald Good velocity, so he's not pitch count. He's not being limited in any way so For what we've seen from what they've told us. He's 100% ready to go. Calvin. A lot has been made throughout the off season of this new look defense all the new faces on that side of the ball and Dan Quinn, chief among them, But I want to focus on the young players. The Cowboys this past draft invested the first six picks on the defensive side of the ball. It doesn't feel like they've had that kind of commitment in the draft since the 2000 and five draft class that I was a part of, but just Internally. How confident are the Dallas Cowboys about those young players on the defensive side of the ball being able to contribute early? Well, they're they're very confident, especially the first round, picking Michael Parsons. I mean, this is a guy they're going to have them all over the field. Don't play middle linebacker is going to play defensive ends to play outside linebacker. We've seen practices where he's just through the a gap. So he's all over the field. Then they got some other kids who they like. Also a user who is going to be there. Three technique zero technique. You've got position flexibility. He's a third round pick is going to start to downplay inside. They like him. Then they made a lot of free agent decisions. I think they found like six guys for agency. On the defense is like 14. New Gaza brought on on the defense that was one of the worst in franchise history, gave up more points and more Russians in franchise history last year, so you got to make some changes and they did and the first commitment Was hiring Dan Quinn and he's a fantastic defensive coordinator. However, he did struggle little bit in Atlanta, so you have to wonder. You know? Is it the personnel or is it the scheme? So we'll find out this season since the Cowboys are going back to a 43 schemes that they had a couple of years ago, and Rod Marinelli was a defensive coordinator. Calvin Watkins with us from the Dallas Morning News and the Good year hotlines. We get ready for Game one. The Bucks and the Cowboys. We know Zack Martin didn't get on the plane to head out here with the Cowboys. We know they feel good about the starters in that group. But how are we feeling about this Cowboys depth along the offensive line that's going to get tested this game. Economy government going to start for Zack Martin and the Cowboys like Economy government. Yeah, he's got. He's played both guard positions. He's got a lot of reps in practice because there were times where they gave, Um Zack Martin a day off like a vet day and we see economy government push off is a really smart kid. I like him. Pennsylvania kid, you know, because parents on the bar But out there in western Pennsylvania, so you drink a little bit, so it's got a little nastiness to him. Now is exact, Martin. No, he thought Jack Martin, but he's going to he's going to have to do for right now. And you know Lao Collins. He's got a stinger. He hasn't had problems last couple of days, so he's going to start at right tackle outside of those two issues that Cowboys feel like they're okay, but they're starting five. The depth. Okay, Who's got great depth? You know, an offensive on the NFL is hard to find it so We'll see what they can do tonight. Calvin. I know one of the areas that the Cowboys wanted to focus on. Also is that Secretary a lot of young faces there? They brought over the Mont KZ to be their free safety. They've got Trayvon digs that second year player. But can you tell us a little bit about what their expectations are for this young secondary group coming into 2021? We've seen a lot of improvement in the Savon dig from year one to year two. You know, Mike MacArthur likes to talk about the second year jump because you know your first year. You're just learning how to play football again. The pro how the pros do it, and now you're not to worry about class and it's all about film. Work it So you had a spinning in the year two. You know how to be a professional, and that's where Trayvon digs is. We've seen a lot improvement in his game. Now, this is a big test for him tonight against the Bucks. The secondary. I like Donovan Wilson. You guys don't have me the veterans, young veteran kids. He makes plays on the ball having KZ with him. I think the safety position might be okay for Dallas. We talked about Parsons. You know he's going to have Quiano Neil with him. He's a veteran guard to he's supposed to help out with some of these young guys like the girl cocked. They're going to hold off into real talks. He's another linebacker. They drafted by having Quiano kneel on the field. Allows Jabra talk to let a little bit maybe for a year or two. Before you can throw them out there. They got nation right, another kid at young corner Kelvin Joseph of the draft in the second round. He's hurt right now. He's got going. He's going to be off. About three weeks of those kids might not see them until later in the season, but they have a lot of confidence in Denver. Right now. They got these vets. They're going to try to Piecemeal it together until You know, his young kids are ready to go, Kevin. We talk about the pressure playing in Dallas, and when Jerry Jones cuts the kind of checks that he has for the guys on this team that's always going to be there. What a success have to look like this year for Jerry to feel good about what he's invested in here for everyone to stay put as this course currently constructed. I'm a quote Guy just went to Hall of Fame yesterday. Derek Jeter. You don't want to championship seasons of failure, and that's what Jerry is looking for every year Super Bowl and Mike McCarthy said. He said, Look, we're not playing for the Super Bowl. What are we doing here? We're just wasting time. And you know everything you put together. You can't say the Super Bowl winning team, you know, because you don't know. Look at the tender playing tonight they were struggling with, you know a lot of the lost twice to the saint and I'm sure no one thought they were going to win a championship. But you've got to play this season now Seattle goals, but that's the objective here in Dallas, so that's why when you walk into the star as their big facility on fiscal, Texas, you see PA Super Bowl trophies off to the side in the lobby. That's what we're playing for, and whether or not we believe that this is a loss that can get into the Super Bowl. And that significant is where Jerry Jones one and that's a championship and Chris know that as well. From playing there for numerous years. Calvin. I know Dak Prescott has missed some time throughout training camp, and I'm just curious as to whether or not that's going to influence the Cowboys game plan offensively in this game tonight, as well as early on in the regular season. What are they saying about what the Cowboys path to victory is as far as the offense is concerned?.

"Fair enough. One of the biggest problems, the Cowboys said last year was certainly on the defensive side of the ball, and they got beat up in the passing game. A lot. Uh, are they good enough to safety position? I expect Trayvon digs have a better year this year and and Anthony Brown I don't think can be okay. But the safety position was a major letdown last year. How much have they upgraded? It? Is it going to be able to show on the field that not every team is going to be able to throw it wild against the Cowboys this year. I'm not ready to say that it's like fix, but I do feel better about it than I have in a number of years. You know, they signed the Monte Casey, who was coming off of an Achilles. They find Malik Hooker as well. Two guys that have had Really nice seasons in the NFL. Casey had a seven interception season in Atlanta, and they both seem to have recovered from their Achilles injuries. Really Well, um, then throw in Donovan Wilson, who kind of had a breakout year last year and Giron curse as well. I think all four of those guys Can make meaningful contributions. Um Am I ready to say that any of them are like Pro bowl caliber? Not really. And you know if I'm being honest, I still expect that secondary to be a problem for them. But what we saw from those guys in training camp, particularly KZ. I thought he was really disruptive. He was around the football a lot made a lot of plays on the ball. Uh, you know, maybe maybe they get more production and more takeaways than we're used to. And that would at least be a step in the right direction, even if they're not amazing. Now. One of the things that they had to deal with in the preseason was last week. Then Quinn going on the covid list and not being able to be in the boot defense coordinator for their preseason game. Um, how much has he changed things here? It didn't work last year. Did he come in and just wipe the slate clean or there's some things that they're going to do that they liked. From last year that they're trying to keep in place. We know they made some personnel changes. But how much is Quinn's different defense different than what they played last season? I think honestly, that was one of the selling points of why they hired him is that it would be something that would be more familiar to this team. They've definitely There's definitely a focus on being multiple, and that's what they wanted from Mike Nolan. But you know, the the company line coming from them is that you know with Nolan. Maybe they tried to do too much in too short of a period of time. You know, during a pandemic where you can't be on the field and all that type of stuff. They basically bit off more than they could chew. I think the compromise with Quinn is He still brings some of those elements to the table. You know, we've seen a lot of multiple fronts, a lot of disguise and things like that. But at the same time, this is a guy who cut his teeth in that Seattle cover three defense that everybody loved so much. And the Cowboys ran pretty successfully for a couple years with Rod Marinelli and Crystal shards. So the vast majority of the veterans on the team should be very familiar with what Dan Quinn's asking him to do, and You know, Can I say right now that it's going to translate, especially against an offense as good as Tampa? Probably not, But I will say they look a lot more confident this year than they did at this time last year. All right. Uh, it seems to me like I'm count them up right here. How many draftees from this past draft that they have on the defense said they looking at seven graft these that are going to make this defense and beyond the roster opening week that tells me one of two things either. They had a whole A cious Lee good draft. Or they admit we were that bad that we have to turn this over rather drastically. How many of the first year Cowboys are going to be able to do something We know Michael Parsons, but above and beyond that, how many going to step in and contribute to this defense and its improvement? I think I think it's a little bit of both. You're absolutely right. I mean, teams are always going to protect their draft class because they're banking on those guys to be stars and they're playing on affordable salaries. At the same time. This was a defense that needed a lot of change. And you know, the front office sent a very clear signal to the roster during the draft. They drafted 11 guys and nine of them played defense. And I think the first Think the first five or six picks were all defensive players. Micah Parsons is obviously he looks like a stud. I think he's going to start. You know he's going to play every snap as long as he's healthy. Then it is interesting, though, because two of those guys are cornerbacks. One of whom Kelvin Joseph is on IR for the short term, So maybe it takes them a little bit to get acclimated. But the third round defensive tackle also Digi do a. He's probably going to start because of injuries. Quentin Bo Hannah's another defensive tackle who had a really nice camp and then I don't know how they get him on the field because there's so many linebackers on the team, but Gabriel Cox out of LSU had a really fantastic preseason as well. Yeah, I think it's not a stretch to say that as many as four or five of these guys could have significant roles right away. Exactly. Alright. Uh, I've been dutifully watching hard knocks. Does it have any effect on the team? We were sitting at home watching it either enjoying it. A getting picked off by hired, however, were reacting to it. We're not part of we're not in the mix. Did the cowboy players talking about it at all? Do you guys ask him about it all? Is it Part of this preparation, or is it what they hope that it is? It's just a couple of cameras there that nobody pays any attention to. We get to look behind the curtain. I mean, they definitely know about it, and we asked him about it. You know, we talked to Dak on Friday and asked him, I think the most recent episode, he was kind of talking about a business model for a tailgate game he wanted to make, and he was kind of. He was kind of amused that that made it the National T V. Um, so they know about it. I thought Mike McCarthy made a really honest point the other day that It's a challenge because you're probably not going to be completely as authentic as you would be. If there weren't cameras in every room, you know, even it's supposed to be a behind the scenes show, but everybody knows the cameras are there. You're probably not going to say what you would normally say if you weren't being televised or or maybe some people kind of ham it up to be more interesting for T V, So I do think there's an element of it to that..

"Your right. But it's nice for the Cowboys that the majority of those are depth. Guys. I think the one that stands out is probably Neville Gallimore. Uh, He was going to be there. Starting three technique defensive tackle. He hyper extended his elbow halfway through training camp. So doubt they'll see him till October, but I think and and credit to them. It's a smart thing to do. I think the Cowboys and plenty of other teams You know the rule changes because of covid have allowed you to do a lot of things differently. You know, Typically you put a guy on IR You only get to that you can bring back to the roster. Otherwise you're done for the year. With the way things are because of Covid. It's a three week window and you can bring you can move guys back and forth as much as you want. So rather than in the guys season, you can say all right, you know, why don't you take September to get right and we'll bring you back in October, so The vast majority of those situations are not major. Fair enough. One of the biggest problems the Cowboys had last year was certainly on the defensive side of the ball, and they got beat up in the passing game. A lot. "We signed. We signed cooper rush. And everyone thought cooper russia's gonna start that week but then signed gary gilbert who didn't even know tone moore's playbook and they started him against pittsburgh right so that's pretty telling. Yeah that's pretty telling a character. So i think why would cooper rush. Be the better quarterback. Now that gary gilbert actually knows. I agree. And i the problem is i agree with that. Garrett gilbert gilbert free is going to be the dallas cowboy. qb to at that. It's almost don't i think i liked. I liked him a lot man. Okay against and that's what we're gonna roll with. And that's it. And then i was also don't i was way way too optimistic with and i just say listen. I'm not really. I do not think chee is a problem if that was one hundred percent and he didn't hurt his shoulder he might have gotten cut but they still. She can carry whoever they want until this tuesday and pretty much everybody you saw from the second third and fourth quarter is going to be gone. It was. it was pretty ugly football. The i will say this about today's game and there are certain people that were in that game the entire almost the entire game. That are gonna be there going. Forward djibril cox was there the entire. He was gonna lot of reps. And that's great because you gotta see as much as you possibly can from these later. Round draft picks but the the issue i have. Is you know you're out there if they're touting heavily about kelvin joseph and nation right right the touting about how they're good in there and they look great and camp then. Those guys shouldn't be on the field and that's what they disagree that led to another injury. Now we're deal with another injury. Injuries are gonna happen. Here's my problem. Who do we think we are. That were all these other teams. Tom brady is playing three drives. You got all these teams playing their starters. What what makes our starters think that the were that flawless that we're that grade. They shouldn't be getting reps right. I just think this is a complete precautionary. Move by the dallas cowboys. Because we remember. Do you remember opening game with no real play last year. Yeah we stunk. Yeah okay well. That's going to be back again. That's going to be zeke again. I'm better barely got anything. The only one that kind of played a little maybe cd lamb and got. But i met a lot of our players. What is jalen. Smith's shoulder pads doing off during this game. Why isn't he playing. I agree i agree. Why is cut. Why are we using cox for four quarters. We know he's going to start. And then you put to nutrient. Who's going three and out. I mean it was good to see cox. He was all over the place. But i meant that now. That worries me more. You know what i mean is i want him to get rats but now why don't you take now with now. It's getting we've seen enough of cox. Now yes with no. I was going to say though. So what did you think of The two are hardy and now they got some decisions to make. Because you know with the with the injury to rico then if you wanna die right and we can start narrowing down this team because look this game is coming on and we can't. There's nothing good that. There's nothing good to say about the game other than the fact that trevor lawrence is pretty good on his ailing he might be okay but then he drop dimes over our backups. I mean there was. Burton was in there. And i don't think i've ever seen a corner play that bad. Since there was no energy when game started literally that team this this game and i know that blogging. The boys is already covered it with a post show. But that game was was like okay. It's just on the schedule. Let's get through it like let's just get through. There was nothing there. They know they're getting cut. Well that that could. Here's the thing if you believe you do. Almost that's getting opening your lockers seeing the pink slip in their when they're telling people you're not dressing you're not addressing you're listening and you're dressing and there's probably some guy's already said to listen you played well. Let's see what you can do for this game. You know what maybe we could. Maybe we could get you know. There's a lot here but not every player that's gonna start via backup was. There's a lot of people that dressed. I know but i'm saying is it's coming out of the majority of the people that played or not going to be there. But i guarantee you if we look at who who is starting to third and fourth quarter. That's going to be the eighteen nineteen players that are getting cut again to you. But we're talking about the first and second quarter we're talking about when they started and i think like i said i think they were just trying to get by and get ready for tampa honestly. They just didn't seem like they were showing you much. There was no razzle-dazzle. There was no creative. Play calling it was very like just drives miles gear plane. Best player i was i was very. I was very surprised at some of the preseason. Well here's the thing. What makes me nuts. Is that like jacksonville jacksonville. Who we just played. Obviously just lost their anti any and james robinson. Running the ball for two quarters. And i'm like that's your guy like what are you doing. Get off the field. But again this is james robinson. He's not zeke. so i don't know. I i think that a lot of these coaches and they want them to be re like they don't want their first game tell you what the first time. They're getting. hit right or wrong. If jimmy johnson was the head coach right now these guys playing they would have played. They would've played played. If you go back and i bring itself on how old school dallas characters in communication on those pages Do you don't understand. these guys. Like roger staubach harvey they all play these preseason games.

"Switching positions in a contract year to a position that he is clearly not working or not not prospering. At let's see here. Hillary vegas as i've had so many questions about their decisions about the offensive line since last year. But i don't know anything about coaching. This is a fair thing to wonder about now. Fincher says have to calm down. Williams is isn't starting over. I at this point. I don't know how anyone could see that. That would be a good idea. Not that you're saying that they're seeing what he can do so far he can't do it and you know what hopefully the results from tonight's game from friday night's game are you know something that studio is in the direction of saying we saw. We didn't like it or not gonna do it again. That's ultimately what i think. All of our collective point is. Is that the cowboys. Need to say enough is enough. Let's go back to williams at left guard. And if they don't have confidence or enough confidence in tyler beyond just say don't try to work this out and treat us like we don't know james newton says try mcgovern center. It's connor mcgovern's third year. You gotta play him somewhere. You know at this point. He's a third round pick and he's not contributing to your team so you really have to figure something out Now let's see here Says i really think they just wanna get williams snaps because they need a backup. That's fine to understand that wanting to have a backup center. But you know what you're now. Compromise connor williams the left guard. Andre says swing tackle. Still huge problem too. Yeah i mean. This was not last week. I i definitely felt worse than i do. In this initial moment about tien sexy but it is definitely still something that is is is needing to be addressed so that is our first loss. I loser of the night's second loser. Rico data and really the only reason for this is he had. I mean if you have a fumble if you turn the ball over you're going to be on the losers last so that one's pretty quick and easy to get through third loser. We're still talking about losers here on our post game show if you're late arrival. Welcome we're blogging. The boys the best ask cobwebs website on the internet youtube channel. Please subscribe we love you seriously. We really love you. Third loser of the night. Travis bush the first to get there said i did pronounce their name correctly. Thank you very much. I'm austin pronouncing names. Yeah it's it's kelvin. just for me calvin. joseph. And i almost put governor. Joseph an honorable mentions. Because i didn't feel tashin it about making calvin joseph. Loser got beat by christian kirk. A lot of people thought it was a push off But the reason that kelvin ultimately falls into the loser category for me and loser such a harsh word right. I feel are saying that every time that we do here but all this week all the storylines were about how kelvin joseph could become a starter. And i don't know exactly where you whether you're watching listening. Watch this game whether you watch the nfl network broadcasts and caught the cardinals version or whether you watch the cowboys home broadcast which was great but the cowboys broadcast talked about again. This was a story. That kind of hovered around all week. How kelvin joseph is challenging for starting role within the cowboys defense. And that makes sense on paper that calvin joseph would be challenging and wanting to become a starter right. Nobody's disagreeing with that idea on paper in principle however the idea that that is a practical thing right now is hard to take and hard to understand governor. Joseph doesn't look awful. I'm not here to say that. I don't think anybody here believes that. But he does not look like somebody who can start right now he does not look like a second round pick right now he will obviously get better as time goes on as the season goes on. He'll obviously kind of get set in acclimate to his surroundings Jalen miguel says kelvin. Joseph had one bad game. I disagree. Kelvin hasn't really flashed throughout camp the way other corners. Have we've seen maurice kennedy flash. We've seen the sean right flash. We've even seen israel mu quam who's planned safety. Flash we've seen anthony brown have better moments so far. Then calvin joseph again. I'm not saying that he is awful. Terrible needs to be cut or anything dramatic like that but he is a loser in this particular context because the hype was that he could start for this team. And i don't think that he can start right now. Now a lot of you mentioned sean right. We talked about winners. Obviously make sense. Bring him up right now although before we do. That's actually take a look at the aforementioned christian kirk beating Kevin joseph ninety moment.

"I mean that's the biggest concern to me is right now. This and this is the way the cowboys have been constructed for. A long time is if everything goes well if everything goes right if everything goes according to plan especially along the injury front is in. Nobody gets injured. If we're looking at an offensive line we can. And we gotta tyrant connor williams be. Amish zack. martin and lyle collins at right tackle. We all believe in that. Nobody is losing sleep over that but the moment that that depth becomes challenged. This team falls apart and granted. Dak prescott was not in there tonight. A great quarterback act prescott mask and overcome some deficiencies along the offensive line. But the fact that there is nothing to really offer there at least at present time. Maybe italian second surprises us next week against the cardinals. Maybe brandon knight gets better at tackle because we saw plane guard. Maybe taryn steal. Plays better tackle. Maybe josh ball comes in. That's a lot of maybes though in know that you know if anything's giving me indigestion right now it's not that root beer. It's the fact that the cowboys don't have depth. That feels reliable along the offensive line. And that's a really concerning thing. So you know that can be fixed. That can potentially get better. Melvin says terrence deal is trash. I mean i'm not that's not incorrect. Let's see td weedy. Let's go everybody with an emoji. I'm in that kind of mood. Nandor swigert root beer has inspired me. How do you think health been. Joseph did i think your auto cuts and interesting. Autocorrect correction from kelvin. Detective and your emoji. Reaction to kelvin. Joseph's first game with the dallas cowboys. I think mine is probably the like sinking emoji. You know the one that's like grabbing its chin Because you know again i play. The game gets wiped out by teammate. And jalen smith but i thought he was. Okay i mean but there is a lot you know. I talked about earlier. How the proof of concept is writing on nissan. Right and israel removed. O'brien offers us. The same emoji dustin. Ooh i liked this. Dustin has the money emoji like the dollar sign david. I think this was kind of terrible suggestion for me as the host. I apologize because i can't totally cd's So that's that's my bad. That's how me. But i think i lost david david. I think it's a struggle. It's really tiny to see Baru says wash hands Oh i think that's maybe like you know like getting excited washing your hands. I see erica. Says eric has like a kind of inquisitive. Lou it's like the you know and i think that's where we're at like we're we're just kind of we're kind of not totally impressed you and that's okay like there's just the fact coven justin didn't like knock our socks. It's totally fine first. Preseason game but i do believe like i was saying that you know there is a proof of concept weighing on sean right and as roma cuomo. There is a lot riding on kelvin. Joseph because we know certainly now that mike parsons is going to live up to the draft. Cool show great about that. But kelvin. Joseph was supposed to be the supplement like kelvin joseph when we watched the nfl draft a few months ago. We all left the second round saying. Okay we actually. We all entered the second round saying okay. We got mike parsons. It's okay you know. Patrick's tan was gone. Jc horn was gone. What could they do about it. So they took micro. Parsons okay cool. Give us an answer. The answer is supposed to be held. And joseph now. It's unfair to kelvin. Joseph to say he has to be patrick's retain jc home. That's unfair and we're not saying that there is a lot riding on the idea of calvin joseph being the like supplement to mike. Parsons and we haven't seen that yet. But that's normal right. And so i think well i think what we saw from calvin joseph for standard..

"I thought he was terrific his rookie year for the most part beat sometimes but he also led the team in interceptions with three. And what you say. I went back and looked at my every play. I was on in tape i. I should've had my aunt alabama. Fourteen times only got three interceptions. I should have had fourteen interceptions. So this is a guy who's pretty determined to improve in year two and take that quantum leap and beyond him i would say kelvin joseph's been physical guy hasn't stood out like digs has the.

"Us this morning on the show to do exactly that. He is a senior NFL reporter with the draft network. He's the co host of the locked on NFL draft podcast. He's a guy that does it all year long. Didn't just parachute in for a couple of weeks in April, Joining us here on the show is Trevor Sycamore. Trevor. Good morning. How you doing? Good morning. I appreciate you having me on the show is still trying to catch up on a little bit of sleep here. But we're ready to go here on a Monday morning. Talk about this draft. Thanks that cool. You got it, man. Very cool. Our pleasure to have you here on the show. Hey, let's start with the quarterbacks that went after the first round. Because Friday morning, we had our chance to kind of pick through the Mack Jones slided of 15 that Justin Field selection by the Bears. We have not had a chance to talk about the bucks going. Kyle Trask a the end of the second round the third round quarterbacks out of that group of guys that went after the first round. Who did you like the most? Where did you like the fit the most? What favor guy in that little group there and boy, That was a lot of fun because we had so much talk about those first five quarterbacks, right? We knew that they would probably all be first round picks. They all end up being top 15 picks. And then when Mack Jones is selected by the Patriots, it was kind of like, Well, now what? You know we're sitting here. Waiting for when this next run of quarterbacks are going to be because they were clearly two different buckets of when these quarterbacks to be selected in the draft, and it ends up coming back into the second round. Was probably around target that we thought but going three out of four picks. That was that was definitely a surprise. And Kelly Mahon to the biking. My favorite sit there just because I feel like he gives you over all the highest ceiling of the guys that were selected you you have Kirk cousins there and I think that her cousins is Generally underrated. I really am going to say that because from a national perspective, I feel like Yeah. Kirk Cousins hasn't won the big one. You know, he's not a quarterback like a Russell Wilson or an Aaron Rodgers or things like that. And he's Compared to a lot of these guys because of the contract that he gets right. The fully guaranteed deals long term deals. He signed a couple of them now and you have a tendency to compare him to solve those other guys, But he's just not gonna be that. And for that reason a lot of people look to upgrade from Kirk Cousins, which is why I think that he's a little bit underrated, because I think you just solid starter all of that to say. Bringing a guy like telling Mom and I think it makes a lot of sense because, yes, we're Mondo is not ready to start right away in the NFL. He doesn't have to it with the Minnesota Vikings. He gets to sit behind a very experienced quarterback in a good place with a good offense and a good defense with him, and so Accuracy is the big deal with telling bonded you think consistency was his biggest problem. You look at his arm. You look at his build you go, man. This guy's got a lot of tools with his arms and his legs to your weapon is quarterback, but it's that consistency. That's not there. He's got the experience right. He's been the experience starter since his freshman and sophomore seasons in Texas A and M, but he just got to be more consistent with that actors. We've got to be able to deliver the ball exactly where it needs to go that ball placement. The biggest thing is really holding. Telling mom back from having a lot of confidence, getting better with his decision making and so I like to fit in Minnesota. I really do it and that's a start right away. Gets a couple of years. You get to see what you can have out of him. Maybe if you want to move on from Kirk cousins a little bit down the road, so I would say that the Taliban pig was definitely the one that stands out to me the most in that little group. Out of all the graves that you gave out. The Dallas Cowboys got one of your few D's. Now this is a team, an organization that went a lot of heavy defense grabbed a couple of offensive players, offensive lineman wide receiver but primarily went defense. What did you not like about the Cowboys approach was Yeah, I just I don't know how much better the Cowboys are right now. And, you know, I don't want to be too harsh in my draft grades because on these guys, anybody has a chance to pan out really helping the organization. But when you look at the Cowboys, I mean I don't know how much better they are here on Monday morning, then they were Thursday morning before the draft even began. You know, I like Michael Parsons. My Parsons was it was a top 10 player in the draft. For me. I had him graded out is one of my pops and guys. Kelvin Joseph. I can see it. He's got a higher ceiling. Also, did you do it? He's a versatile interior defensive lineman. But Used a lot of the positions that they decided to prioritize. They felt like more long term need fixes. You know, when you look at this team and you, you look at the ads with Michael Parsons and with which of Wilcox, you say, OK, sure that they might need linebacker a little bit down the road. They didn't pick up late. Van Directions, Fifth year option. Sheila Smith hasn't been exactly what they wanted. They re signed him, but They're still players on the roster right now. Those so do those guys. They're still starters and so then get into a situation where, Okay, Dan Quinn's coming in. He's playing his style of defense, who's all gonna play? And maybe not even maybe it's even more than that. Who's all gonna make the team and just felt a little bit done in the biggest area of need for the Dallas Cowboys was corner and Tell them, Joseph. Either projection kind of a player. He's got a long way. Learn the consistencies of really making a difference in this league nation. Right I thought was a huge overdraft in the third round, and then they ended with Israel in Kuala in the sex. But again, that's a guy who didn't have a ton of production was very spotty. When he had his best best games, you can see the flashes, but that consistency in that impact wasn't there and After the Cowboys needed the always needed a corner that could come in and play right away for them. You saw how close they were to really making a run at this division last year, And even though it wasn't at the tippy top, this could have been there division to have I just It's hard to look at the Cowboys draft class and think. Yep, I got a lot of confidence that with that press start coming back with more help along the offensive line that the additions that they made are gonna put them over the top in the division. Some of the names you could like you could see flashes, but I really think the Cowboys panicked in the first round when passenger Tanner JC Horn went off the board, right, perform a number 10 and I felt like that cascaded into an avalanche of really questionable picks throughout the entire draft. After that, that's interesting. Trevor succumb. A sick of my joins us this morning. Here on this show, you could watch him and listen to this part of the draft network senior NFL reporter there and the locked on NFL draft podcast. So while the Cowboys primarily went defense, the Jets primarily went offenses support Zach Wilson, and that was one of the grades. You like. Best you gave the Jets and a Would you like about what New York did? I love it. Absolutely love what the New York Jets did. Of course you got number two. Overall, You got a new regime coming in ahead at head coach and an offensive coordinator and on defense is well and They went into this draft moved on from Sam. Donald knew it had to be all about the new guy in what did everybody say about the Jets over the last couple of years with Arnold? They failed him right. Whether it was the coaches the offense of line, the offensive weapons, whatever it was just an object did not do what they needed to do. To allow Donald to improve to grow to get the most out of his third overall selection there. And this is something that I say all the time, you know, number one overall picks and top five picks in general. They're worth a lot. They come with a lot of value individually. But when you draft a quarterback high when you draft a quarterback in the top five, but alone here at number two overall, it doesn't just end there. That that is the beginning of you Just signing your your name on the dotted line that you will be responsible for.

Trevor Sycamore Sheila Smith Michael Parsons Zach Wilson Trevor Kelly Mahon Dan Quinn Kelvin Joseph Minnesota Vikings Mack Jones Aaron Rodgers Thursday morning Kirk Kyle Trask Joseph Arnold Russell Wilson Sam Monday morning Cowboys

"Lord. How do you follow that? I choose not to Drew drew one of my favorite receivers, and I'm happy that he has been recognized finally and will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer. But man, Red Bull Agogo Jaguars 35 gonna be taking offensive tackle Walker Little Out of Stanford. Okay? All right. So Calvin Joseph, let's talk a little bit about him, Uh, did not play opted out of the 2020 season. Midway or late in the season he played. I can't rember how many games you play, but I know he opted out late, fellas, do we? What do we think about this defensive back out of Kentucky? Well, I like to Southeast Samuel better not like him. I don't know why he wasn't the pic. But Kelvin Joseph, you know, certainly played on a defense that like a lot of town and had to be broke oxen him pretty much on that defense this past year, they underperformed. I think it's an individual player. He kind of fits what they want to run there. But overall, I don't know I was going to sign a similar 434 40. I mean, super fast guy, another athletic player expected to go here in the second round. But I again there's some concerns about his maturity. He was suspended for his bowl game back in 2018, and he's had some injury issues as well. So that's one of those things that you you. You love the athletic upside. I like Asante Samuel Better too, as well. Guy talked about last night, but the maturity issues or one of the things that were kind of a bit of a knock against him. You only started Ah, handful of games in college. A lot of guys had him mid rounder, so you might think the Cowboys kind of stretch there. Here's Roger Goodell.

"Richie Grant just went to the Atlanta Falcons at number 47 Jenkins 39 to the Bears is of the latest right pick 41 9th Pick in the second round, then the Giants In the 40 Niners at 43, so only three picks away. What do you see it on the board here with a lot of guys in the last few picks. I think it helped the 40 Niners because I don't think they would want with any of the last three or four picks that were taken. Well, the big defensive tackle from Washington our good friend Doug Hendrickson's client just went But, Dougie, I win the bet. Because I told you bar more would go in front of your guy. And he did as far as the Niners if they want to corner Kelvin Joseph from Kentucky is a tremendous player. Asante Samuel. You heard Dennis. Brown talked about earlier. He's a really, really nice player. Um, you know if to me those of the two guys at that spot, But to me the number one guy is is Jeremiah Woo Suk. Or, Um Oh, and the fact that he has fallen one pick away speeding injury. There's gotta be something right. When Johnny just isn't It's weird. Just some teams don't know where to play him. They don't know They don't think he's good enough against the run The plays a stack backer. They don't think he's quick enough. As as an athlete to play strong safety. Every down at the NFL right now is your look. I know that chest piece to move around he he's played safety. He's been in the slot. He's played weak side, linebacker mean when you think of today's NFL, we're just looking for speed that somebody like that would fit fit Somebody. Yeah, I mean to me, you know, figure it out. That's what I would say fit. Guys figure it out. He's explosive. He's to 20 to me. He reminds me a lot of Derrick Brooks. He flies to the football. He's instinctive. Um, He's a guy who's he is a hybrid. He is He's not. He's going to be an undersized, weak side backer, or, you know, I don't know how the Niners feel about did they feel he can be plays a stack backer, But this guy makes place he smart. He's pro day was crazy plated about 2 15. He showed up to 20 and he still worked out. Very naturally. I mean, he's or core Mo is one of the great players in college football, and I think at the worst, he's a Pro Bowl linebacker. I think this kid is one of the you know, could be one of the best players. I'll make a prediction. John 10 years from now, people will look back and say. Jeremiah Lucey. Korma went the second round. Wow. I mean, that's how good he is. So I like him a lot. But there's also some good receivers. Here. Let me go through some of these Just because, like you said, maybe they take him because the value is just so good. But the two positions we've really focused in on his corner. You just mentioned Joseph. A kid out of Kentucky that transferred over from Ellis you That's nice. Elijah Moore is the only guy we're only receiver to go in the second round. Terrence Marshall Junior mentioned ls she Rondell? More is more of a guy that's gonna be in the slot from Purdue. Omari Rogers is a guy from Clemson, probably more of a slot guy. Nico Collins will bigger doing. Eskridge had a good Senior Bowl Western Michigan more of a slot guy. If there's a receiver, do you like any of those guys or somebody else there? I mean, Rhonda Elmore ran 4 to 9 and and he was a productive player, so and he plays bigger than its size, but its size is tiny, so I don't know It's a deep receiver draft. I don't think the values there to me at the value is either on somebody like a core Mo who slides Or I'll tell you there's three edge rushers here, you know Aziz social Ari, who the Niners did meet within the pre draft and he was the defense of M V P of the Peach Bowl. He had, like three sacks and two forced fumbles. Um, six to about £250 and just comes, you know, Think of Leonard Floyd with the Rams OSHA. Ari just comes flying off the edge. He's not an advanced pass rusher. But he's big time. Talent and big time. Speed off the edge and white 90 be a beast. And then Ronnie Perkins from Oklahoma and Joseph, aside from Texas. Those three pass rushers air all really, really special. You know, Perkins is good against the run and against the past and just made play after play after play for the Sooners corner is another spot You mentioned Calvin Joseph Aaron Robins, Air Robinson, Central Florida Sunday Samuel Junior's been talked about a little bit smaller out of Florida State, Elijah Mold anus. Probably a slot only, but he's really, really good Mela fun. We remember his brother flamed out with the Raiders, but he's a big corner out of Syracuse on. Then there's Paulson and Deebo sitting there from Stanford, who you know well, so if they go corner, there's quite a few corners as well. And in a few of them fit that size profile that right now, the 40 Niners don't have the roster after losing Sherman Yeah, and and I'll tell you the You know the corner that I think the real sleeper corner is the Ellis you kid Carry Vincent Jr. Who doesn't have the prototypical big time size, John. But Man. I mean, the ball skills, the athleticism the way he tracks the ball in the air. I mean, he'll hit you guy place fast. He's got a tremendous burst. I mean, if you watch him, he was a really, really good cornerback for the Tigers the last couple years. Good athlete ball skills can play the nickel can play outside. You know, he's Vincent Donaghy has that physical swagger He's dominating. He made. This may be a little early for him. He may be more of a third round pick. I kind of think overall that the third round is the sweet spot for the corners and not the second round. But the need for the Niners may make them go corner here. All right. But again, we're one pick away the Giants. The New York Giants are on the clock right now. So the 40 Niners have a lot of different ways. They could go a lot of guys. I don't think they're gonna go safety. But my favorite safety in the in the draft, Theron more egg from TCU. He's more of Ah, you know, rangy guy. They've already got that kind of in Jimmy War they, Mort need more and maybe of strong safety with tart. Only having one year left on his deal, But he may be a guy that just has so much again. You're looking at value here. You may just save yourself. Well. Jeez, This is what we need. But like you say, You know when you're looking at guys like, you know, J. Okay. And you're you're saying Look, we don't really need a weak side. Linebacker slashed chess piece defensively, but he's so good, and we've got him ready so highly. That's what starts happening in these rounds. Running back. You were probably waiting like you said they could use a back, probably especially given Some injury history back there, but probably too early for a guy like Carter. I would imagine he's probably more of a third rounder, fourth rounder type. So again, they could go on a lot of different directions. All right, So this is the pick. Four. The 40 Niners, right? The pick is in in Miami actually has moved up in another trade. Tons of things Gotta be aware this is probably core. Amoah. All right, let's go. Let's go to the voting with Miami Straight 42nd pick.

Ronnie Perkins Doug Hendrickson Elijah Moore Richie Grant Rhonda Elmore Nico Collins Jeremiah Lucey Omari Rogers Dennis Elijah Mold Carter Jeremiah Woo Suk Kelvin Joseph Vincent Donaghy Deebo Perkins 20 Derrick Brooks Atlanta Falcons Joseph

"At the Gamecocks give us a bit of a scouting report. Well, they always, you know, play hard. I think they're up against it as well with injury and co vid you could tell, you know they're a different team each week and like most of us are, unfortunately with injuries and And opt outs and, uh and you know who's available, but they made a turn to the young quarterback and you see a lot of talent there. They're very physical. They always run the ball, one of the best running backs in the league. Hey, he is top 123. You know that we've played. He's really hard to get down there. Offensive line is always nasty. They do a great job of putting a hat on a hat and run the ball. They just turned to a freshman quarterback could be dynamic He can't be in hey sees you could see a lot of talent there, and he's getting reps. He's getting better with each and every opportunity. Seeing a note here on social media. I guess Kelvin Joseph D B. You're leading interceptor in the secondary has posted on social media that he's looking ahead to the draft. Yeah, he says he came in and visit with me after my press conference today and Had a good talk, and Calvin just you know, he's a good young man. I appreciate what he did for us, and, uh He just didn't Don't know how to phrase it. That's really an odd conversation. To be honest with. You didn't really wanna opt out. But he didn't know he didn't want to play this week. So I was like, Well, that's brisket. Then where is it didn't want to risk risk injury, Knight said. That's understandable, I said, But that's not how we're gonna do it like you can't Can't just have him out there standing around, so I'm not playing this game. That's not that's not a good sign. That's not the way we're gonna do it here in Kentucky. So you know, I basically said, Why don't you just You know, use this time a knockdown. Go get ready, and that's still greatly appreciate him. I still will help him and all those things, but I don't want anybody just standing around watching practice, saying they're just not going to participate in this particular game. You know we're not gonna operate that way. But again, I thank him. I like him. You know, He's got to get the work and really put a lot of work in and get ready for the for the draft. He's got a lot of talent, but he also is young and he's got a lot of work to do. He doesn't have a lot of film on tape. So And if you get into those conversations with him since other guys, you mean you'll have next week with juniors will take a look at the draft. Assuming it's like in the N B. A. You get feedback from people you know, in the NFL that could give us an idea of what they were. They could expect to go. Yeah, exactly. And some, you know some some players it It doesn't matter. They don't want the information. They're going to go and you know, like Calvin and that's That's fine. You know, That's his choice. You know, he has to do what's best for him. But other guys digging into it. You know very, very hard, you know, for them and getting as much information as I can. I did the same thing with Josh Allen. And many of our other players and will continue to do that. It's a matter of fact, you know? Yeah. I'm meeting with one of our players tonight and and their mom and going to go over something. Some information that I have and continue to work our way through that. So we're unfortunate, Josh one on the Ireland with the Jags. Yeah, Yeah. Talk to him the other day. He's he's gonna be okay. And yeah, it doesn't. You know, appear to be anything too serious, So he sounded good. And and he talked or team and so is good to hear from a couple of your guys with the Steelers were having quite a quite a run Benny and Bud and you know, they keep hoping toe don't know when they're gonna play the Ravens. They keep moving that I started everything by moving that back another day, but sure when their plan, but they are, they're playing really good football. Lonnie's playing exceptionally well getting better every day. Mike, of course, is playing his tail off so really, really proud of those guys. They're doing a great job. Speaking of Mike, we've got a mic on the line from going still over in Bath County question about your team leaders. Go ahead, Mike. It's coach thanks for taking the call, and I just want to reiterate what Hyde said earlier with the compliment to you and your staff and my questions, more bus system related thing, And sometimes things sound like a cop out of moral victory. But that's had a comment that would lead up to have to use the leadership committee. Get your players. Yeah, if we look at people if we look at a 10 and three year and in 85 years and you've got a couple of 1000 snaps in the season, this is just perspective on the system. You're too plays away in an 85 year being 10 and three That's not a cop out. Or would've should've. Could've. That just shows how All of the system is and it's the same thing this year in the midst of what a crazy year. So here's my question when you're working through different things through the week and used the players In your leadership committee. Could you just expand a little bit on the system of how they help you manage Communicator? What? Yeah, it's a great That's a great point. Um, you know the 10 and three year Um, you know, could have been eight and five, you know, and other years, you know that this year what? It could've showed a couple plays here. They're early couple games. You know, you wish you could do over. It's always like that. You know, it really is. You have to win the close games. Our margin for error is small. But the whole margin for error in this league is difficult. Uhm you know again, this this This idea of playing 10 conference games is just, uh, foot flat out silly, you know, so we had to. I'm not calling him but we had to. Um, but don't don't think it's gonna carry a lot of support if it ever gets put up to a vote Wolf that ever gets put up to a vote. Um, they better start thinking about how much money is going to cost the fire coaches every year, you know, because that's what's gonna happen, You know, and, uh, so it Z pretty difficult, But, you know, Mike, you bring up a good point. What? There's a fine line sometimes. And believe me as we talk system, as we talk about philosophy is we talk about what we're doing. I'm beating myself up all year. You know, we talk about how we move forward. You have to progress. I want to progress. But you also sometimes they're not as far off as you feel like you are, you know, And so those air the that's always a balancing act, But But believe me, I wanna I wanna stay. Stay ahead. You know why I keep my job? I wanna keep moving the program forward. I want to be successful. I want to take it to the next level. Not just maintain. And then there was the second part of your comment or question about the leadership Council. I used them from many things from just kicking around ideas. We sit in there very informal. We talk. I talk to him about the pulse of the team. I talked to him about whether you know a lot of the schedule. You know, the thinking ahead type schedule. You know what we're gonna do during Thanksgiving week what we're gonna do, You know, do we want to go to a movie or, you know is an early game. Would you guys rather just rest? You know, I mean, they they have a good Paul. Most for what the players want to dude. No, let's stay and you know what I mean. Let's just get our rest. We have an early game. Let's not go to a movie this week. You know, just simple things and you know everything for big things, the little things and we just talk and they share and it's great because there's guys have been around a long time..

And 35 yard line and quickly brought down nice play there in coverage for a minimal game, Given 34 yard line in a game of two Kentucky on that play didn't little dumb emotion. See if they're in man of zone? They saw what they wanted. They saw that it was done because no one moved with receiver. And it just seemed a little underneath Rob, but it only picked up two yards ball in the right.
