"Schedule your free and home estimate. It's 8 11 now, an opening statements are expected in federal court today. In the second trial of four members of the oath keepers extremist group charged with seditious conspiracy for their role in the January 6th attack at the capitol, prosecutors will try to convince jurors that the four men plotted with oath keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and others to use for us to stop the transfer of presidential power to Joe Biden. Two weeks ago, the Justice Department secured seditious conspiracy convictions against Rhodes and another man, Kelly maggs, the three others, however, were acquitted. Roads and megs were the first people in decades found guilty at trial of that charge. It carries up to 20 years in prison. A jury deliberations could begin today in the shooting death of a naval academy midshipman's mother who had been visiting Annapolis on induction day last year Michelle Cummings was standing on the patio of a hotel when a bullet struck her in the chest, prosecutors say the shot was fired by 31 year old Angelo Herod, but intended for another woman standing outside her car nearby. He was identified from surveillance footage from the hotel. Jurors have been reviewing phone calls, social media and surveillance footage and other evidence related to the case over the past two weeks. Some people seek comfort in owning all kinds of pets. The county is considering updating its ordinances to prohibit private ownership of some exotic animals, big cats and bears are already not allowed, and this week aboard committee will vote on adding to the list, kangaroos, wolf hybrids and baboons, also venomous reptiles, and non native venomous spiders. The change in the law would not affect entities like zoos and exhibitors that are licensed by the state to house such animals. "An SEC registered investment adviser. The oath keepers leader was just convicted. The far right will keep thriving. By Vera Bergen ruin. The conviction of the leader of the far right oath keepers militia on seditious conspiracy charges was hailed as a significant win for the Justice Department and a victory for the rule of law. But the verdict against Stewart Rhodes and his associate Kelly maggs, who face up to 20 years in prison after being convicted on the extremely rare charge in connection with the January 6th attack, is unlikely to dampen a growing anti government movement that has long since moved on from Rhodes's oath keepers organization, splintering into new extremist groups that are younger, more aggressive, and more online. We shouldn't conflate this tactical victory against the oath keepers as a final kind of silver bullet success against what is unfortunately a thriving anti government anti authority movement in the United States today, says John Lewis, a research fellow at the program on extremism at George Washington University. The life or death of the oath keepers as an entity doesn't change the fact that they have a significant number of individuals who continue to support the ideals, the ethos, the conspiracies that made the oath keepers who they were. Prosecutors alleged that members of the oath keepers organized, equipped, and trained ahead of January 6th, and coordinated their actions during the attack on the U.S. capitol using hand signs, cell phones, and encrypted apps. Some members were caught on camera, forcibly entering through the rotunda doors wearing tactical vests radios and helmets. The jury found that roads a 57 year old former army paratrooper and Yale law school graduate who founded the oath keepers in 2009 played a central role in the violent plot to block the transfer of power and keep Donald Trump in office. Roads encouraged members of the self styled militia to consider themselves as the last line of defense against tyranny and adopted slogans that cast the group's mission as defending the nation against perceived enemies. Last fall, a leaked roster of 38,000 members revealed dozens of elected officials in its ranks, along with large numbers of police officers, sheriffs, and current and former military. The testimonies of some of the oath keeper members on trial alongside show how effective these tactics could be. Jessica Watkins, a defendant who was found guilty of obstruction and other January 6th related charges, but not seditious conspiracy, is a transgender U.S. Army veteran who struggled after she was forced out of the military after her sexual orientation was discovered. According to court documents. She worked as a firefighter, an EMT, and a bartender before cofounding the small Ohio State regular militia. The group soon became a dues paying subset of the oath keepers, according to the FBI. Watkins became obsessed with right-wing conspiracies, testifying that she watched Alex Jones InfoWars show 5 or 6 hours every day, feeding her fears of a United Nations invasion, forced vaccinations and the bombing of U.S. Military bases by China. After hearing about the oath keepers on the program, she saw her involvement with the group as a way to still serve in another way after losing her military career, she said. Many members of the group are drawn by what they see as an existential struggle against a government co opted by a cabal of elites actively trying to strip American citizens of their rights in the words of the indictment against one of the oath keepers involved on January 6th. But even before the insurrection, the group had lost a bit of steam as younger, more Internet savvy, far right organizations like the Proud Boys. And the boogaloo movement entered the broader right-wing ecosystem, says Lewis of GW's program on extremism. Roads saw the attack on the capital as an opportunity to push the oath keepers into the spotlight, amplifying fears of impending conflict with the U.S. government. After January 6th, however, Rhodes's reputation among oath keepers took a hit, as he stayed in Texas, while fellow members were being arrested, and accusations of informants roiled the group. Some local militia groups split away from the oath keepers, becoming disillusioned with the lack of responsiveness from the national organization, but have continued to actively organize and hold recruitment Sessions. While analysts expect the oath keepers to wither in the absence of its leader, these groups aren't going away, says kishi, the director of research and innovation at the armed conflict location and event data project, a nonprofit that tracks political violence and extremist groups. If anything, they have adapted to the post January 6th landscape, and they're continuing to adapt and evolve. Far right groups are increasingly mobilizing around anti LGBTQ or white nationalist narratives, bringing in new groups of people, kishi adds. Some of these bigger names that people have become increasingly familiar with, like the oath keepers, are just scratching the surface of these groups, she says. The far right isn't a monolith led by Stuart Rhodes, it's very, very splintered. Even with roads and other leaders likely in prison and the oath keepers national organization diminished, the leaders of far right groups are increasingly reliant, not on local chapters or dues paying members, but rather the online forums and encrypted messaging apps where they recruit and organize. The threat is the network, says Lewis, and those have not gone away since January 6th. If anything, they have become more prominent, more mainstream..

It's a major victory in the Justice Department's investigation into the January 6th attack on the capitol. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer has praised for Republicans who joined Democrats in supporting the respect for marriage act, which would repeal a federal law that defined marriage as between a man and a woman. Because of our work together, the rights of tens of millions of Americans will be strengthened under federal law. The legislation was prompted by an opinion from Supreme Court Justice clarence Thomas, when the high court overturned roe versus wade. But Utah Republican Mike Lee argued the bill is unnecessary. They intentionally misinterpret justice Thomas's concurring opinion in Dobbs and claimed that the sky is falling. The legislation must also be passed by the house before going to the president's desk for his signature. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTO be news. "The oath keepers. And welcome to the podcast. Thanks for joining me. A lot going on. I know in the courtroom and thanks for taking the time to step out and give us an update. How in your assessment is this trial going? And where is it at what stage are we at right now? Yeah, let me just say, first of all, that it's a pleasure to be on the podcast today. As you know, the local court rules prohibit me from discussing the evidence that's in the case that we have to be careful not to run astray of violating the local court rules. But there are many things I can tell you. First of all, I can say that we think the trial is going well. That we have an outstanding team of attorneys working on this case. I'm representing Stewart roads along with Bill linder with Phil lender and James Lee bright from Dallas, Texas, to outstanding lawyers, we have the other defendants, Kelly maggs has Stanley Woodward and Julie Halle from Washington, D.C., Ken harrelson, has Brad guy from New Jersey. Jessica Watkins has a Jonathan Chris from Pennsylvania and mister Thomas Caldwell has bay Fisher from Maryland. So we have a lot of outstanding attorneys on this case and we have a great camaraderie and rapport with each other. So I just think we have an outstanding team in this trial on behalf of the defense. Let's talk about before we talk about the evidence or at least specifically Stuart roads. Let's talk about the concern that so many of us have that we are in an environment where there is intense political bias against these defendants. I mean, they're entitled to a jury of their peers. It's obviously the judge's job to make sure that that's the case, but we have an Obama judge Amit meta. By and large these judges have been very reluctant to say anything other than, yeah, we've been in D.C. a long time. These jurors are wonderful. My question is, do you feel confident even with a D.C. jury and a kind of progressive political establishment that you can get a fair trial? Well, that's a good question. And obviously, we won't know the answer to that until the trial is over. But let me just say this, we spent three days selecting the jury two weeks ago. And we went through an enormous amount of questions to the potential jurors. The jury pool was a large pool, the judge called in many more potential jars than normal and there were a lot of jurors, a lot of individuals on the jury panel that were excused because of cause. And so these were people who truthfully said, I don't think I can render a fair verdict. I don't think I can be fair in this situation. And you know, all during that process, my prayer was that people would just tell the truth. If they were so convinced about their views of January 6th and what these defendants were involved in, that they could not be fair, would just tell the truth. And you know, I think in large measure, most of them did that. And so, you know, I'm optimistic that we have a good jury. I'm an optimist by nature, and I'm just going to say that I think that the judge did a good job in this case. I mean, certainly, you know, there were decisions that he's made that we disagreed with, but overall, I'm hopeful that we have a good jury listening to the evidence in this case.
