WNBA players celebrate Warnock's projected win over Loeffler
"Right. Before the insurrection at the capital there was two senate runoff elections that the country had their is on in one of them. The reverend raphael warnock defeated the incumbent. Appointed senator kelly leffler in georgia. Kelly leffler for about ten years has been a partial owner of the atlanta dream of the wnba. She's now the majority owner but she's been around the team for now ten or eleven years and you may have heard her own players and much of the wnba is diametrically opposed to everything that leffler stands force. It was a very interesting situation to see everything develop earlier this week. And then how it works in the team dynamic for more on that. Let's welcome and renee. Montgomery actually a guard for the atlanta dream. She joins us this morning. She's actually rejoining us this morning a second time. She's been on with this. Good morning to you so i guess the first thing i gotta ask you is being a member of the team and understanding everything. That's going on on the floor in off the floor. What's the reaction of you and your teammates to misled losing this election. So i'm just gonna speak for myself and the reaction is. It's not even just her losing. Its rafael worn off. One and i wanna make sure that the messaging stays clear because there's some things that happened on january six is trying to take away from the fact that a black man is going to send it a jewish man from georgia's going to send it and we won the presidential race so i would say for me. It's a sweep. it's a three no sleep. So the the the feeling is happy. Rene speaking of january six. What are your thoughts on everything that occurred that day. Yeah you know. It's kinda like we all felt something was gonna happen. I was worried after november. Third ominously like when when the number started tied and we could see that joe biden. Really my win this thing you know. We all started to get a little nervous even here in georgia the aquarium shutdown coach color. They all boarded up their their buildings because we were all expecting some type of reaction and not a good one so then to see what happened on january six and see the lack of policing that was there it was it was disappointing and most call a spade a spade. It was terrorism. Domestic terrorism is the term that we should use for that renee montgomery innately. Sorry thanksgiving i was going to say what is say about the platform that the wnba has like you guys like even a month before. Colin kaepernick took a knee in two thousand sixteen. The wnba pre-game conference about police brutality. You guys were black. Lives matters t shirts before it was even a thing. Guys always been the leader at the forefront say about the platform that you guys have in the work that you guys have been doing you know. I hope people start to licking because a lot of brands. A lot of sponsors. They don't see the value in in women would say 'cause you know. I think i saw a tweet. From china robinson that said of sponsorship for women athletics how chow especially now knowing the impact that a women's league not just so a player but a whole week and have i don't understand why there's no interest but i do hope that just seeing how things transpired and how everyone to see what's going on. I hope that there is some value added to women now. Renee montgomery of the atlanta dream is joining us. This morning on keyshawn jay williams zubin were presented by progressive. Insurance and rene is with us on the goodyear hotline to robinson by the way. Espn women's college basketball analyst shaina. Yes shoutout. I want to ask you this because people may not want to go back to leffler because i think this is just so fascinating with how clear she's been in how clear you guys have been She used to be for people. That aren't aware that maybe don't follow the dream on everyday basis. She used to be a constant present. at games. a practice you'd be a team functions. He was always be sitting in the front row. She was very active owner. Obviously things have changed when she went to the senate got other responsibilities. I just wonder what your relationship is with her. The team's relationship with her you know even before the senator race i would just fear before the games. We've been to her house. Where team function. But i mean any of the players know you're not usually best friends with owner in general you know you typically would talk more to your g Even when it comes to contracts and stuff so we did see her there and we would wait and she was you know. I know that she released herself. From you. know day to day duties as she became a senator but she was president and the wnba. I know probably the letter was her trying to distance herself. Thing is how she's republican and the wnba. Is you know highly majority. Lgbt in black and brown community. So i can understand why she's trying to distance ourselves but it wasn't the case beforehand. Rene we're kind of personal discussions if any at all have you had. We'll often about social justice nine. I'm you know this was a typical owner-player relationship. So you know. I never talked to my minnesota on her about social justice. And i know that this time is is different but by the time that all of these things try Started to unfold. You know it was already. She was already too far. gone by. then how do you feel now that everything is transpired and she still co owner of the team for me and this is gonna be unpopular to say but for me. I'm sure she's not the only owner. That probably feels the way she feels. And so i hope that the wnba and hope that you know even her you know i. I've already posed the question. I don't know why he would want to own a wnba team. If you have to write a letter to the commissioner opposing. Everything that that team is standing for you know. Our team is the atlanta dream. And i don't know if people know that's from martin. Luther king's dream speech. That's how we got our name so if you oppose everything that we fundamentally stand for. I don't see how you can build a relationship there. I don't know why you'd want to be there

How are you? Good morning, Mike. I'm great. How are you? What did you spend your time doing yesterday? Where were you during the melee. So our team had split up shifts. So I was playing to go for the second. Objection. We're anticipating about four hours for each state that was objected to. And so when this all happened, I was I was watching at home and They shut down the capital very quickly, So I was not able to make my way up there. But I did cover the day's events on through about 4 A.m.. When the the ascertainment was finally made for Joe Biden and Comma Harris, What time did they reconvene? What time did they finally reconvene? I was in bed by then. So Yeah, they got back together about nine o'clock in the house and Senate to resume debate on the objection to Arizona. That's what they were doing when the capital came under siege, And then the only other state that received an objection from both a member of the House and Senate was Pennsylvania and so that they did take a full two hours of debate. In the early morning hours, Tonto to talk about that and then voted on that it was, of course, defeated, and then they finished going through the count of the rest of the state's fishing in about 3:39 A.m.. How many other objections were anticipated? That didn't come to fruition and to what event did the daytime events have on that? Yeah, So we thought there was a possibility that maybe up to six states could see some sorts of objections. We did see them from on Lee House members, but the one that we expected a senator to object to was Georgia, and Kelly Leffler, the Georgia senator who just lost her race earlier this week. She, you know, made a speech in the Senate floor, announcing that she was withdrawing your support from objection. And so there was no other senator that joins on the objection to Georgia's just members of the House. And so you know, it wasn't entertained. They didn't have to break off debate for for that state. Look like sorry. Looked like things were getting kind of scrappy at one point as a congressman land from Pennsylvania, I think had the floor and I was amazed that given what happened during the course of the day that there were people still Objecting to the vote in Pennsylvania and the I guess, hey, is a Democrat on the GOP side. They were trying to interrupt and yell. It looked like it was getting kind of feisty there for a while. Yeah, A lot of people thought that they might go to 50 cups there and you saw members of Congress kind of all stand up from both sides of the aisle to kind of separate, Um, some some members that were getting kind of heated. Mor Morgan Griffith from Um, from Virginia was really heated and trying to get the speaker Pelosi the strike. The words of kinder land landed, said, You know, all this was caused by lives that we're hearing from the other side and the Republicans, Diamond Republicans for really, you know, inciting this. This attack in the capital and exciting this mob toe over on Capitol police and and take seeds of capital is just Really a stunning, stunning event, and you know, there were other members of Congress that you know, tried to strike the right turn and you know, having. McCarthy, the minority leader, said that it was the saddest day of Congress that he's ever seen as he's been a member of the last decade or so. And, um, you know, we saw Mitt Romney come up and talk and really just don't have And Senate Republicans and Democrats. I thought for the most part, did try to come together. But that moment was kind of lamb and working. Griffiths and Andy Harris was was one to watch and just really, truly amazing after something like that it happens to capital. Yeah. What the chamber is that look to be in reasonable condition physically. Well. In the Senate. It was pretty much trashed and the House chamber they had barricaded and done a better job of keeping the trump supporters from going on before they're, um I'm personally a woman was killed. She tried to breach and broken window in the speaker's lobby speaker's lobby runs the length of the House chamber right behind the speaker's rostrum. So if you think about that American flag that's behind the chair on the other side of that wall is the speaker's lobby. And generally, reporters hang out there during votes and You can, you know, Put your name on a card and try toe have a floor manager. Take it to a member of Congress and for an interview request, And you know, members are often talking off camera in there and doing all those sort of print interviews that Um, you know, a lot of the scribblers as we call them in the broadcast journalism, they they're doing their their their hard work. They're trying to get members of Congress to talk and, um, you know, to see this woman, uh, You know, recently killed as she tried to breach the speaker's lobby. It's quite disappointing. You are the images I've seen. It didn't look like any members of Congress were in the speaker's lobby at that point. Um, but, you know, clearly they were trying Tol take some sort of posture to prevent this sort of scene that we had seen on the Senate side, with demonstrators sitting in the chair of the presiding officer and And getting up on the day of eyes. Just really stunning images that we saw play out yesterday. Yeah, she'll be investigations on all sides in this one. So we'll see how it plays out. John Parkinson all the time. I have. Democrats take control of US Senate after Ossoff, Warnock win
"Politics and the us began on wednesday with a slightly different tone amid fresh election results from georgia where to democrats beat incumbent republicans to give them control of the us. Senate democrats jon. Ossoff and raphael warnock beat incumbent. Republican senators david purdue and kelly leffler respectively. The pair of democratic wins brings a fifty fifty split in the senate effectively giving democrats control of the chamber. Since democratic vice president-elect kamla harris is the tiebreaker many republican lawmakers have spoken out saying that president donald trump and his rhetoric are responsible for the race results. Utah senator mitt. Romney said quote. It turns out that telling voters that the election is rigged is not a great way to turn out your

Pro-Trump mob storms the US Capitol, touting 'Stop the Steal'
"Insurrection resulting in scenes unlike any in living memory after days of prodding by president donald trump rioters descended on the capitol building in washington. Yesterday congress had gathered for a joint session to certify. President elect joe biden's victory under the provisions of s con res-. One cinema will now proceed as a body. Several republican lawmakers such as ted cruz began lodging. They're expected objections. The tallies recent polling shows that thirty nine percent of americans believe the election. That just occurred quote was rigged the midway through proceedings representatives were forced to flee from the chamber ushered into bunkers through underground passageways. Seeding the floor to a violent group of trump's supporters for hours tense standoff ensued as rioters posed for pictures in house speaker. Nancy pelosi's office and made off with capital podiums. And for those hours. Mr trump stayed silent. i call on president trump. Go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the constitution and demand and then to this siege. The eventually issued a video statement telling the rioters to leave but a condemnation. It was not. We have to have peace so go home. we love you. You're very special. You've seen what happens. You see the way others are treated. That are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel but go home and go home. It peace after the building had been cleared. Lawmakers returned and carried on with the vote confirming mr biden early this morning with little further drama and mr trump at last committed to a peaceful transfer of power via staffers. Tweet even as he continued to insist. The election was unfair. Like so much that has happened in the trump presidency. It's all shocking. But not entirely surprising leaving those on capitol hill to survey the damage to a story building and to american democracy. Now the site of an angry mob. Rampaging through america's legislature wandering around the senate floor breaking into legislator's offices. That's not the sort of thing that's happened before john. Fashion is the economist. us digital editor. Most americans think of that sort of thing if they think of it at all as the kind of thing that happens in other countries and i think that the the political and psychological fallout from that will last a very long time it really was watershed moment for american politics. Not in a good way and walk through exactly what happened here. So what happened was the donald trump spoke at a rally at around noon on the sixth and he told his supporters that he would never concede and he told them to walk to the capitol and show strength and be strong now. What they showed of course was a deeply trumpian. Facsimile of strengthens the temper tantrum. And while the joint session of congress to certify joe biden's victory was underway. They overwhelmed capital police and got into the building. The session was adjourned shortly after two pm. I think the secret service whisked away. Mike pence who is presiding because the vice president is also president of the senate capital office. Buildings were evacuated members shelter in place for rioters to all appearances ran rampant through the capital. And eventually the riott sort of petered out. They didn't really seem to have a plan or goal beyond that show of petulance that they convinced themselves with strength and shortly after eight pm the to has of congress gaveled back in and After some lengthy speeches they did their constitutional duty and certify. Joe biden's win and there will be big questions about how. The rioters managed the breach in the first place. I mean how do they organize beforehand. And were they arrested afterward while the rioters have been far right trump supporters and they organize themselves at least partly using social media for days leading up to yesterday. They discussed on social media how to sneak guns in. Dc which has strict gun control laws outta dodge and spread thin. The police presence one of them fantasize about setting up the gallows outside congress and hanging elected officials. That seems to be how they organize themselves. Were there any arrests. The capitol police let a lot of people leave with just a warning Now more arrests may follow the rioters. A lot of them for reasons that baffoni took pictures of themselves and can easily be identified but even so even if more residue follow to my mind the difference between the very thin police presence and the way they treated armed insurrectionists who broke into the capitol building and terrorized. Legislators and the way police treated and prepared for black lives matter protesters this summer in full riot gear and nasa physical presence. That difference is really striking and what about republicans in congress. What do you think the repercussions will be for them. The ones who supported mr trump's efforts to to to question to overturn the vote. The question of repercussions is really interesting. You know one reason. Republicans lined up behind the president. Trump's claims of manipulation election thefts which i strongly suspect they knew were false is because they believe the price for not doing so was greater than the price for doing so they worried that trump would support a primary challenge to them and twenty twenty two or twenty twenty four. That was their concern now. Kelly leffler is one of the two senators just lost in georgia. Initially said she would object but after the riots. Change your position. I don't think she would've done that if he genuinely believed the election was stolen. I suspect the same is true of a lot of the others who back president trump's challenges. I suspect they didn't really think that the election was stolen. They thought it was a smart political. Move not to get crosswise with president trump. now anyone who cares about the health of american democracy democrat republican libertarian. Anyone who likes living democracy. Hope that the senators and congressmen who tried to overturn election will pay a heavy price. But whether they actually will. I don't know that i'd bet on it. Most of them from safe seats. What about the republican party. More generally will they abandon trumpism. This does all of this demonstrate. The very real costs of trumpism. The more interesting question is how the republican party reaction. Toto because as popular is trump is with base voters. He's deeply unpopular with the broader electorate. Remember the he entered office with republicans in control of the white house and both chambers of congress and he will leave with democrats in the same position. The last time that happened the last time they had that trifecta party switch was eighteen. Ninety two and the results this year showed the republicans really can win with women and with non white voters with the right candidates. And so it's in. The party's interest to broaden its view and leave. trump isn't behind. And you know even people. Who seem like staunch allies like josh hawley and ted cruz. They want trump gone to right. They don't want him to be the twenty two thousand four nominee. They want to be the twenty twenty four nominee. But there's a first mover problem. Nobody wants to stick his neck out and get chopped off but if nobody moves. All trump retains as power which nobody also really wants and i would guess that they're hoping some combination of legal and financial trouble post-presidency sort of does him in politically so they won't have to and you know they may be right. They may get lucky.

Spokesman Ed Cabrera says the agency is generally granting those requests if a community believes that they can safely conduct and unsheltered Count Hut is working with them. But if, after the evaluated their circumstances and have concluded that they cannot safely count this year, then hut is grant thine exceptions upon request. But under one condition, communities that receive a waiver have to tell the department how else they will keep track of changes in their homeless populations. That's because the data the count's typically generate is used to inform policy and funding for state and federal programs. So we think it's critical that communities know you know how the unsheltered population has changed. Even during this ongoing pandemic. Some communities like Santa Clara County are still evaluating whether they will request a waiver or move forward with the count later this month. I'm Alex Hall..

Well, looks like Democrats may win control of the U. S. Senate, Raphael Warnock has declared victory in the runoff election against Republican Senator Kelly Leffler. The other race. Still too close to call, but the Democrat leads there. Let's bring in NBC radio National correspondent Bill Zim for the latest on this pretty shocking results, I suppose. Yeah, Everything seems to be falling into place for Joe Biden here, Joe you mentioned Raphael Warnock has been projected as a winner and his runoff against Kelly Leffler and already that is a history making event. He becomes the first black senator from the state of Georgia. Also, it is just incredible where we've come in a generation now when Raphael Warnock was born Georgia's two senators were Richard Russell and Herman Talmadge, who were segregationists so you could say we have progressed as a society so already we have seen history being made. And now the other runoff race is becoming a little clearer. Now. John Assad has about a 16,000 vote lead as we speak over his opponent there, David Perdue. And the way we look at it now they're roughly a little more than 70,000 votes that are thought to be remaining here, Joe most of those air mail In which have been overwhelmingly democratic in these runoff elections. So it looks pretty clear at this point that John Oss off is gonna win the other runoff, which would give the Democrats control of the U. S Senate. But I can almost guarantee you there will be a lot of arguments over these over the next few days for sure also One other thing that appears to be a major factor here is turnout from the indications we have seen in New York Times has broken this down that the indications are that the turnout in some of the heavier Republican counties, the rural counties in Georgia was anywhere from 10 to 20% down from the general election, which may have told the story and these runoff elections. All right, let me see Radio National correspondent Bill Zimpfer. Speaking of elections Congress is moving to certify the results of the presidential election today, but a number of Republicans are going to object. How outcome of Georgia Senate runoffs could affect Biden's agenda

Victory ends more than 30 year losing streak for Democrats in statewide run offs It also leaves control of the Senate. Up to the state's other runoff between Republican David Perdue and Democrat John Also off the contest remains tight, with all soft ahead by about 13,000 votes. Gabriel Sterling is Georgia's voting system implementation manager. There's a potential where some of these elections could be within a half a point, So the second place finisher will have the opportunity to potentially ask for a recount again. So I've currently has 50.1% of the vote. Well, Purdue, is it 49.9%. Some absentee votes have yet to be counted. And as many as 17,000 military and overseas ballots are due by Friday. President Elect Joe Biden's agenda hinges on the outcome. Jeannie's A No, is a Bloomberg News contributor and professor of political science at Iona College. All the things that you know Biden has talked about wanting to do. I'm not suggesting he'd be able to do all of them, but certainly you two have a lot better shot. If you have a Chuck Schumer controlling that gavel versus a Mitch McConnell. But even if Democrats do take the Senate, the majority remains small. More on that from Bloomberg News contributor and former McCain campaign manager Rick Davis. Just because you have the majority and you can set the agenda doesn't mean you get your gender past and their big, close sentence, close houses. It's only a 10 vote margin in the House of Representatives that Speaker Pelosi has so any given issue is going to have defections with levelers loss, Republicans must hold on to produce Senate seat to keep their hold on the chamber, though it may take days to determine the final outcome of that race.

"W Packed with Lars Larson. Joe, it's a tune denied 2021. We're watching the results roll in from the great state of Georgia, where they had a fraudulent election on November 3rd in a lot of us hoped, Well, let's hope we don't have the same kind of problems on January, the fifth as we decide who controls the United States, Senate, R. Kelly Leffler and David Perdue Gonna win or John Ausaf and Raphael Warnock. Are they going to win? The fact is, if the Democrats get those seats, can you imagine the background? We've talked about the background of Raphael Warnock well or not before he is an absolutely execrable human being. He has said some terrible things. And of course, if the Democrats control things in the Senate, it's not going to be good for the United States of America, but I want to point something out. Joe Biden made a promise to Georgia voters in the last 24 hours that I think is actually illegal, and I hope that somebody files a Federal Election Commission complaint, Joe Biden told Georgia voters that the $2000 stimulus checks will never come. If the Republicans when the Senate run offs now you could say, Well, that's just political talk. Fact is. Joe Biden said that Americans would immediately receive $2000 in Corona virus relief If the Georgia State of Georgia votes for both Democrats in the U. S Senate run offs, he told Georgians those checks will never get there if David Perdue and Kelly Leffler were to win the race, So in other words, Joe Biden is offered you 2000 bucks to vote the way he wants you to vote. That in most states, it's illegal to offer somebody something of value anything of value and especially to offer cash if you vote the right way, But apparently those kinds of restrictions don't apply to somebody like Joe Biden. And any case. Glad to get your calls at 866 a Lars. That's 8664395277 emails Go to talk. Lars Larson dot com. Let's go to Nevada where Doug is on the line. Doug, Welcome to the program. What's on your mind tonight? Well, I'm wondering something in Georgia. They don't send ballots to P o box. Now in Lyon County, where I'm from other than a ranch. It's the only way we won't have mail service now doesn't that somewhat would disenfranchise? Rural areas, which were mainly conservative. Probably probably would, it probably would, and you need to have a physical address where you're going to receive your ballot. See, this is the reason Doug that I have always been against vote by mail. I happen to live in a state today that his vote by mail I lived in a different state 10 years or 15 years ago that had vote by mail vote by mail of giant is a gigantic disaster. And and one of the disasters. You've just outlined that if you say Well, we can't cut people out of voting if they don't have a home or if you know, and I'm taking the most extreme example. Somebody living under a bridge, they say, should still be able to vote. Well it once you open that door, and you say, Well, then we can have people who who's only address is the local you know, shelter for homeless people. Well, that means that you can you can create all kinds of phony votes and just have ballad show up by the dozens or by the hundreds at places that have no physical, no legal connection. The person who lives who lives there. You can just say yes, I live in the local shelter. Really? S O. You create a bunch of phony voter registrations, which the Democrats have been doing for a good long time. It's one of the problems that you run into with absentee ballots will vote by mail ballots with all those ballots, so Is a disenfranchising. I'm sure Doug did. Somebody could have argued before vote by mail. An absentee ballots that requiring you to get your pickup truck and drive from your farm or ranch all the way into a polling place. Somewhere that might be miles distant, would also be a disenfranchisement. But I'll bet you managed to find your way past it, didn't you? Well, yeah, the places undue hardship on voter their lives on a ranch or or what have you? They're saying Would you think about it? How would you go about fixing it? Uh, how would you go about fixing it? Yeah. You're saying, for instance, for instance, that you haven't sent it here, people box. You know what the problem is? The problem is Doug. Anybody can get a P O box in anybody's name. And what happens when all those p o boxes is stuffed with 20 ballots? Who are all said to use that same P o box because you've opened a door? You have protected the person who has to use a P O box because the legitimate reason you bring up which is you live on a ranch way out of town. And you don't even have rural mail service. So you have to go into town and go to your P O box. What do you do when people begin to gimmick the system by opening up a P O box, and then it registered 20 or 30 people to that same P o box and doubled their somebody to prove that those aren't legitimate voters. Because you've opened the door for fraud and cheating. Well, then you think it's okay to place an undue hardship on those words, But I think it's an undue hardship Doug any more than I think it was an undue hardship back in the days of pull voting, only which America did for for decades. To say, Doug, you're gonna have to get in your car and plan your next trip to town. I'm sure you go.
